Drawing on personal experience as a former professional football player and
interviews with over 120 current and former NFL players, Robert Turner gets behind
the bravado to reveal what it means to be an athlete in the NFL and why so many
players struggle with life after football. With compassion and objectivity, Dr. Turner
reveals the life and mind of high school, college, and NFL athletes, shedding light on
what might best help players transition successfully out of the sport.

Robert W. Turner II earned his Ph.D. in sociology at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He is Assistant Professor of Clinical Research and Leadership at George Washington University. Dr. Turner played football professionally in the now defunct United States Football League, the Canadian Football League, and briefly in the National Football League.

JFK’s Favorite Childhood Series Defined America For Millions!

Billy introduced ideas about America and freedom to children at a transitional period in the nation’s history. Frances Trego Montgomery’s series (1902-1930, reissues in 1960s) was an enormously influential illustrated series contemporary with the Oz books, as well as with America’s rise to world leadership, and social unrest over race and immigration. Montgomery’s relentlessly destructive male goat, the favorite childhood reading of Joe, Jack, and Bobby Kennedy, raises questions about the nation’s defining role, as well as the influence of childhood reading on children who become presidents.

A robust body of social science research has investigated the spatial mismatch hypothesis (SMH), considering the consequences of geographic disparities between black residential locations and potential opportunities for employment. Focusing on U.S. urban areas between the 1970s and the present, studies have produced equivocal evidence on the implications of spatial mismatch for black employment. In this paper, we argue that the mixed evidence may result from a misspecification in both the historical time period and mechanisms whereby spatial mismatch affects black employment opportunities. We show that national declines in black employment and labor force participation, particularly among black women, were especially pronounced in the Jim Crow era (1880s-mid 1960s), rather than the post-industrial era (1970s to present) in which the SMH has generally been tested. We then investigate the extent to which the SMH should be formulated as a commuting problem, involving the difficulties that blacks face in reaching non-residential sites of employment, or a problem of residential ecology, in which blacks who do not live near entrepreneurs or white neighbors are less likely to obtain jobs. Analysis of census micro-data between 1910 and 1970 suggests that residential segregation provides the most consistent account of black-white employment gaps, insofar as employment under Jim Crow suffered when black housing was separated from the homes of business owners and work opportunities in residential locales.

CSEAS Friday Lecture Series. Physiologies of the Flesh: Medical and Moral Matter in Late Colonial Indonesia (September 28, 2018 11:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/53487 53487-13390332@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 28, 2018 11:30am
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Center for Southeast Asian Studies

In the early 20th century, the Netherlands East Indies was awash with revivalist and reformist movements. These included Christian missionaries seeking to overcome the failures and frustrations of the previous century and Muslim reformists seeking to reform their faith to meet the political, epistemological, and moral challenges of colonial modernity. Both looked to a common resource in pursuit of reform and revival: modern medicine and the medical body. Although often recognizing this convergence of religious and medical modernity among Muslims and Christians in late colonial Indonesia, historians have done very little to examine critically the role that health, medicine, and the medical body played in these projects or the many differences that existed in their appropriations and uses of modern medical discourse and practice. This talk attempts to address these historiographical gaps. It specifically examines how Protestant missionaries and Muslim reformers in Central Java used medical discourse and practice—especially questions of physiology and etiology—to pursue wider ethical, epistemological, and devotional projects of modernity. In doing so, it considers how Protestant and Muslim reformers theologized modernity from conditions of the flesh.

Statistical Models for Analyzing Dynamic Social Network Data (September 28, 2018 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/54423 54423-13583297@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 28, 2018 4:00pm
Location: West Hall
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Data Science

Abstract: Due in part to the ubiquity of online social networks these days, interest in analyzing social network data has spread beyond its traditional home in the social sciences to many other disciplines including physics, computer science, statistics, and engineering. A topic of significant importance in social network analysis is the creation of statistical models for social network data. Many social network data involve relations between people observed at multiple points in time and are thus dynamic network data. In this talk, I introduce several statistical models for analyzing two types of dynamic network data. Discrete-time network data, also known as network panel data, represent the structure of the social network at regular time intervals, e.g. over each week or each month.Continuous-time network data, also known as timestamped network or relational event data, are collected with finer granularity on the time and at irregular time intervals. I demonstrate how these models can be used to infer network structures and how they evolve over time on several dynamic social network data sets, including a network of physical proximities between people at a university and a network of wall posts between users on Facebook.

Ashley Lucas, the child of an incarcerated father, conducted interviews in California, Texas, and New York with prisoners’ family members, former prisoners, and people who do work connected to prisons. She also corresponded with over 400 prisoners from across the U.S. Weaving together these interviews and letters with her personal experience as a prisoner’s child and creative writing, Lucas wrote a one-person play which she performs herself. Doin’ Time uses monologues to take the audience through a variety of perspectives on the families of the incarcerated. Since 2004, Lucas has performed Doin’ Time both inside and outside prisons throughout the U.S. and in Ireland, Canada, and Brazil. The play runs one hour and fifteen minutes and is always followed by an audience discussion.

RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. THE EVENT IS SOLD OUT, but if you did not get a reservation, you may come to the event and get on the waiting list in case a spot opens up.

Exposure to Opposing Views can Increase Political Polarization: Evidence from a Large-Scale Experiment on Social Media (October 19, 2018 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/54841 54841-13645308@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 19, 2018 1:30pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Interdisciplinary Committee on Organizational Studies - ICOS

There is mounting concern that social media sites contribute to political polarization by creating "echo chambers" that insulate people from opposing views about current events. We surveyed a large sample of Democrats and Republicans who visit Twitter at least three times each week about a range of social policy issues. One week later, we randomly assigned respondents to a treatment condition in which they were offered financial incentives to follow a Twitter bot for one month that exposed them to messages produced by elected officials, organizations, and other opinion leaders with opposing political ideologies. Respondents were re-surveyed at the end of the month to measure the effect of this treatment, and at regular intervals throughout the study period to monitor treatment compliance. We find that Republicans who followed a liberal Twitter bot became substantially more conservative post-treatment, and Democrats who followed a conservative Twitter bot became slightly more liberal post-treatment. These findings have important implications for the interdisciplinary literature on political polarization as well as the emerging field of computational social science.

Acquiring knowledge and understanding are central to making our way in the modern world. Some of us claim to be experts because we try to know a lot about one topic.
Most of us are satisfied with knowing enough about some topics to get through the day. The book, "The Knowledge Illusion", by two cognitive scientists, Steven Sloman and Philip Fernbach, explores why we are all under the illusion that we know more than we actually do.
They discuss how we think in groups, with technology and about science and politics. They also make recommendations for how to cope with our limitations. We will read their accessible book across the six sessions. Humility and curiosity are the only prerequisites for the course.
Craig Ramsay is a political scientist who taught for decades while coping with his own illusions of knowledge.
This Study Group for those 50 and over will meet Tuesdays 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. October 30 – December 11.

Please join the Modernist Studies Workshop for a dissertation chapter workshop with Amanda Greene (English Language and Literature) on "Sousveillant Storytelling: The Situated Sense-Making of Mass Observation’s 'Subjective Cameras.'"

Chapter abstract: Through readings of the British Mass-Observation Movement's publications, practices, and films between 1937-9, this chapter redefines sousveillance as a habit of socially situated storytelling that is rooted in visual media imaginaries as opposed to a particular apparatus. Originally coined by Steve Mann to describe his pioneering experiments with wearable computing in the 1990s, sousveillance refers to a “gaze from below” that can balance hierarchies between the population and the surveilling state. While sousveillance is usually considered dependent on particular networked digital technologies (like cell phone cameras that can capture instances of police brutality and share them on social media), Mass-Observation’s strange hybrid artistic/anthropologic media experiment decades earlier exemplifies how this practice functions in a broader range of contexts and, above all, in less technologically dependent ways. The movement's work affirms everyday visual practices as vehicles of empowered storytelling by which individuals can enter into larger political communities of dissensus, and draws on contemporary interwar visual media forms as resources to enhance this vision. However, the movement's initiatives aimed to teach the population to actively, interpretively participate in their environment not by distributing devices, but by embracing the affective and socially situated distortions of their own “subjective cameras.” While this idealization of distorted narratives may seem dangerous in our current political landscape of "fake news," sousveillance brings individuals’ distortions into view not to create alternate realities but to recognize what Donna Haraway calls “situated knowledge” as the ethical center of individuals’ political agency within larger collectives.

Please email Aaron Stone (stoneaa@umich.edu) to RSVP and receive a copy of Amanda's chapter draft.

Join the International Youth and Students for Social Equality (IYSSE) in a meeting on the 2018 midterm elections. The meeting will feature a presentation by Niles Niemuth, the Socialist Equality Party’s candidate for Michigan’s 12th congressional district. Niles will review the current political situation and the significance of his campaign.

There is growing support for socialism among workers and youth throughout the district and around the world. This is the outcome of record levels of social inequality, continuous attacks on wages and social programs, and unending war.

The IYSSE is fighting to show workers and students that the fight for socialism means a fight against the capitalist system. It requires the independent mobilization of the working class against the Democrats, the Republicans, and the social system they defend.

Military Support Programs and Networks (M-SPAN) is a portfolio of initiatives within the University of Michigan Depression Center and Department of Psychiatry dedicated to military and veteran mental health and wellness. M-SPAN integrates innovative approaches to outreach, overcoming stigma, and decreasing isolation, and includes the design and delivery of programs for service members, veterans and military families. Each flagship program was developed in response to identified gaps in services, and includes evidence-based approaches that have been tailored for specific populations. A rigorous program evaluation is integral to each initiative. Programs are incubated and evaluated at the University of Michigan, and disseminated through our partners to maximize impact. This session will cover the various M-SPAN programs serving veterans and their families, right here in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and how service members, veterans, spouses and partners can get involved with each one.

Deep Dive into Digital and Data Methods for Chinese Studies (November 16, 2018 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/57044 57044-14075026@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 16, 2018 9:00am
Location: Hatcher Graduate Library
Organized By: Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies

Speakers: Dr. Michael Stanley-Baker 徐源, Nanyang Technological University and Dr. Hu Chijui 胡其瑞, National Taiwan University

Light refreshments will be provided. The room is equipped with laptops, but please feel free to bring your own.

Designed by the Research Center for Digital Humanities and CSIE Digital Humanities Lab of NTU in Taiwan, DocuSky is a digital humanities research platform created specifically for researchers of texts, to suit various needs and different stages of research. It provides tools to build up their own personal database of texts for text processing, tagging, text reorganizing and contextualizing, text-mining, GIS and visualization.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn to use Docusky and Palladio for large scale analysis of the full-text Buddhist and Daoist canons. You will learn how to search for large term sets, determine their statistical distribution by chapter, and then sort these chapters according to time period, intellectual genre, sectarian attribution and place of origin. You will then learn how to produce simple but powerful visualizations to show the similarities or differences between term clusters in different scriptural groups. This toolset is open access, and the Daoist and Buddhist canons data file will be made available as an open-source, citable document.

This workshop requires that you first register here: https://ttc.iss.lsa.umich.edu/ttc/sessions/datamining-the-daoist-and-buddhist-canons-with-docusky/ It is open to faculty, students, postdocs and visiting scholars at the University of Michigan. We regret that it is not open to the general public.

Dr. Michael Stanley-Baker 徐源 is assistant professor in History and at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He researches medicine and religion in early medieval and contemporary China. He developed tools for the study of religion and medicine in China with National Taiwan University and the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin, and is now developing them for the study of multi-lingual primary sources for medical history across the classical world. He also serves as Vice-President of the International Association for the Study of Traditional Asian Medicine (IASTAM). More information is available at https://michaelstanley-baker.com/digital-humanities/

Dr. Chijui Hu 胡其瑞 is a postdoctoral researcher at the Research Center for Digital Humanities at the National Taiwan University. Dr. Hu received his PhD degree from the Graduated Institute of Religious Studies from National Chengchi University, Taiwan. His research focused on the cultural and history of the minority groups in Southwest China, and now, he wants to put this research into the digital humanities tools to see what may happen.

The “Deep Dive” series is co-sponsored by the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies (LRCCS) and the Asia Library, and is co-directed by Mary Gallagher (Professor of Political Science and Director of LRCCS) and Liangyu Fu (Chinese Studies Librarian, Asia Library). Question about the series? Please email Liangyu Fu at liangyuf@umich.edu.

Abstract: Networks are everywhere! They provide a powerful way to detect patterns and relationships within big data systems. But, are they meaningful when the “system” is an individual person? Indeed, the reliability and validity of network approaches have been questioned in the social and medical sciences; network results are assumed to generalize across people and time, but these assumptions rarely hold because people are heterogeneous and dynamic. The goal of this presentation is to introduce a person-specific perspective to network modeling, and to illustrate the accuracy of a particular modeling approach called group iterative multiple model estimation (GIMME). Two novel GIMME-related applications will also be presented. In the first, GIMME will be used to detect individualized time-varying neural connectivity during a resting state, revealing connectivity parameters that are associated with cognitive impulsivity. In the second, GIMME will be used to identify personalized links among emoji-based emotion structures and daily depressive symptomatology. This is an ongoing work with possible extensions to big(ger) data (e.g., Twitter) and with implications for precision health care.

How to Make Causal Inferences Using Texts (January 11, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/59075 59075-14677952@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, January 11, 2019 4:00pm

Abstract: New text-as-data techniques offer a great promise: the ability to discover, measure, and then utilize text-based variables for testing social science theories of interest from large collections of text. We introduce a conceptual framework for making causal inferences with text-based measures as either a treatment or outcome.  We argue that nearly all text-based causal inferences depend upon a latent representation of the text and provide a set of sufficient assumptions to identify causal effects when text is used as a treatment or outcome. We provide a framework to learn the latent representation---justifying the use of popular unsupervised methods such as topic modeling or principal component analysis---and then estimate causal effects with the same sample used to learn the latent representation. But estimating the latent representation, we show, creates new risks: we may introduce an identification problem or overfit. To address this problem we introduce a split-sample framework.  We apply our framework to study whether increasing the proportion of women on Congressional committees leads to more representation of women’s ideas during the legislative process and to assess how partisans respond to social media messages from President Trump.

Bio: Justin Grimmer is an associate professor of political science at Stanford University. His research examines how representation occurs in American politics using new statistical methods. His first book Representational Style in Congress: What Legislators Say and Why It Matters (Cambridge University Press, 2013) shows how senators define the type of representation they provide constituents and how this affects constituents' evaluations. His second book The Impression of Influence: How Legislator Communication and Government Spending Cultivate a Personal Vote (Under Review, with Sean J. Westwood and Solomon Messing) demonstrates how legislators ensure they receive credit for government actions. His work has appeared in the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, Journal of Politics, Political Analysis, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Regulation and Governance, and Poetics. During the 2013-2014 academic year he was a National Fellow at the Hoover Institute.

The MIW program offers an opportunity each year for 45-50 undergraduates from any major to spend a semester (Fall or Winter) in Washington D.C. Students combine coursework with an internship that reflects their particular area of interest (such as American politics, international studies, history, the arts, public health, economics, the media, the environment, science and technology). The semester in Washington is action packed. Students work four days a week, attend an elective one evening a week and a research course on Friday mornings. They spend their weekends exploring the city and taking in cultural events. Most leave Washington longing to return.

Students are free to pursue internships of their own choosing. They are coached in internship searching strategies as part of a prep class that is taken the semester before going to D.C. Students have interned at the White House, the Smithsonian, CNN, Greenpeace, CBS, Public Defender’s Service, Washington Institute for Near East Policy, NAACP, The Brookings Institution, American Enterprise Institute, National Defense University, Partnership for Public Service, Center for American Progress, Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and many others.
FUNDING is available for this living and learning program.

For individuals who are members of socially stigmatized identity groups, recruitment and hiring processes can signal belonging, fairness and identity safety, or wariness and identity threat. This talk will focus on how the changing landscape of hiring processes, particularly the use of technology, can lead to subtle identity contingency cues affecting the experiences and performance of applicants. Results of studies on how demographic variability in assessment materials affects performance and assessments of organizational fit will be discussed as an illustration. Projections regarding how the use of avatars, algorithms, digital interviewing, mobile platforms, and other technological advances in hiring may affect identity safety and threat will be discussed.

Information Extraction from Online Text --- from Opinions to Arguments to Persuasion (January 18, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/59488 59488-14745558@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, January 18, 2019 4:00pm

Abstract: A long line of research in Natural Language Processing (NLP), including our own, has addressed the task of identifying and extracting information about opinions with the goal of determining what people (and other entities) are thinking or feeling. In this talk, I'll present new research on argument mining, a relatively new area of study in NLP that focuses less on extracting from text WHAT people think or feel, but rather analyzing argumentative text to understand WHY they do so. Specifically, I will first present some of our new research on the automatic analysis of informal, user-generated arguments in which we aim to expose the intended underlying structure of the argument. Next, I'll present our research that examines arguments on a public debate forum to understand what makes one argument more convincing than another.

Bio: Claire Cardie is the John C. Ford Professor of Engineering in the Departments of Computer Science and Information Science at Cornell University. She was the founding Chair of Cornell's Information
Science Department and has worked in the area of topics ranging from information extraction, text summarization and noun phrase coreference resolution to the automatic analysis of opinions, sentiment and deception in text. Cardie was selected as a Fellow of the Association for Computational Linguistics in 2015. She has served on the executive committees of the ACL, NAACL and AAAI, and has been Program Chair for EMNLP, CoNLL, ACL and COLING as well as General Chair this past July for ACL 2018 in Melbourne.

The Michigan Energy Club (MEC) is a student-run group composed of undergraduate and graduate students interested in energy topics. MEC’s mission is to provide an interdisciplinary forum to discuss the topic of energy from scientific, political, and economic perspectives. We do this through member-led energy discussions, seminars, collaboration with other clubs, projects, and more. MEC is a great resource for students to learn more about the energy industry and to create connections. MEC is open to all students, and meetings for Winter/Spring 2019 are held on Tuesdays from 6 PM-7 PM in room 2000A at the MMPL (Energy Institute) at 2301 Bonisteel Boulevard.
