The upcoming exhibition Post No Bills: Burhan Doğançay’s Archive of Urban Protest highlights this important Turkish modernist’s exploration of three decades of the American social zeitgeist in works based on the abstract collages of torn posters, chipped paint, and graffiti he found on city walls.

Doğançay documented and harnessed the political content of walls in more than 100 cities around the world, an effort that was progressively recognized throughout his life. His works are in museum collections around the world and have been the focus of major exhibitions at the Pompidou Center, Paris (1982), the State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg (1992), and the Istanbul Modern (2012). Though many of his artworks are located in American university museums, few exhibitions have explored the shifting trajectories of 20th-century American political discourse expressed in them.

The killing of George Floyd, in the wake of the horrific and obscene history of the killings of unarmed black people by the police, has focused attention like never before on the systemic anti-black racism of the criminal-legal system in the United States. To be sure, the massive expansion and militarization of policing and incarceration are in some ways of comparatively recent origin. Yet they also have a much deeper origin in, and are inextricably connected to, a longer history of the judicial and extra-judicial violence against black people in the continent. The racist inequities of the criminal-legal system, indeed, are not a bug, but a feature.

Our panel of experts, scholars of the United States at the University of Michigan, will help us explore, beyond the headlines, the reach of the long arm of the carceral state in society as well as the challenges and opportunities that have been thrown up by the contemporary protests against the systemic violence of the state. The stakes for understanding the working of the carceral state are documented by the Documenting Criminalization and Confinement project of the University of Michigan’s Carceral State Project. However, the momentous protests against anti-Black racism as well as the broad public support they have received both within the United States and across the world—the clamor heard round the world—have also created a novel opportunity for implementing and imagining futures beyond a blatantly rigged carceral framework.

Panelists:
• Melissa Burch, Anthropology, University of Michigan
• Matthew Countryman, Afroamerican and African History, American Culture, History, University of Michigan
• Matthew Lassiter, History, Urban and Regional Planning, University of Michigan
• William D. Lopez, Health Behavior and Health Education, University of Michigan

Moderator:
• Mrinalini Sinha, History, University of Michigan

Though many of his artworks are located in American university museums, few exhibitions have explored the shifting trajectories of 20th-century American political discourse expressed in them.

Why does America vote as it does on Election Day? Since 1948, the American National Election Studies (ANES) has provided data to inform explanations of election outcomes in the United States. The ANES provides survey data from a nationally representative sample of American adults to give researchers a view of the political world through the eyes of ordinary citizens.

In this ISR Insights talk, Dr. Vincent Hutchings (Professor, Department of Political Science; Research Professor, Center for Political Studies) will discuss the history of ANES and why it remains an essential resource for the social sciences. He will talk about the study’s approach to data collection and instrumentation in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, which includes conducting surveys through a combination of Internet, video, and telephone interviews. Dr. Hutchings will also highlight politically-relevant results from recent studies, including attitudes on the Black Lives Matter movement.

This webinar is part of a continuing series focusing on the research happening at ISR. If there is a topic you would like to see featured or have an idea for a future presentation, please email abeattie@umich.edu. This talk is being recorded and will be shared widely.

Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Register for October 13th: http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=uhlrs88ab&oeidk=a07ehcay0gjdcc701ce.

In advance of the Presidential election, UMMA and U-M's Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning created the “Dialogue Deck for Personal and Political Reflection." The Dialogue Deck pairs twelve images from UMMA’s permanent collection with provocative discussion prompts designed to encourage conversation and reflection about US culture and politics. The Dialogue Deck activity is meant to encourage meaningful dialogue and connection with your family, friends, colleagues, and maybe even yourself.

During the month of October, UMMA will host three "Democracy Conversations" via Zoom that feature the Dialogue Deck activity. Participants will be sorted into small breakout groups of 4-5 people and paired with a host who will gently guide the activity and conversation.  Conversations will last one hour, and offer the opportunity for individuals to learn more about the Dialogue Deck activity and engage in conversation with others outside their immediate social circles.

The Dialogue Deck can be used by anyone as a self-guided discussion tool, and the print version of the deck is available for free at the UMMA Shop.

UMMA's Vote2020 initiative is presented in connection with the U-M Democracy & Debate theme semester. Thanks to our partners at the Penny Stamps School of Art & Design, the Ginsberg Center for Community Service & Learning, the Ann Arbor City Clerk's Office, and the Center for World Performance Studies.

Philippa P.B. Hughes is a social sculptor and creative strategist who produces art-fueled projects that spark humanizing and authentic conversations across political, social, and cultural divides. She is an evangelist for dismantling the polarization industrial complex, one conversation at a time. Hughes has designed and produced hundreds of creative activations since 2007 for curious folks to engage with art and one another in unconventional and meaningful ways. She leads CuriosityConnects.us, a partner in Looking For America, a national series inviting politically diverse guests to break bread and talk to each other face-to-face using art as a starting point for relationship-building conversations. Hughes has engineered numerous public-private collaborations that have been funded by the Kresge Foundation, New American Economy, Center for Inclusion & Belonging, and the DC Office of Planning. She has served as a commissioner on the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities among numerous other boards throughout Washington, D.C., where she is based. Hughes has spoken at TEDxAmericanUniversity, Creative Placemaking Week 2018 in Amsterdam, Creative Placemaking Leadership Summit, TomTom Festival, Smart Growth America’s Intersections. Her work has been featured by CNN, PBS Newshour, CityLab, and The Washington Post, among numerous other media outlets. Her formal training took place at the University of Virginia, which launched her into a six-year legal career that ended with the Washington City Paper declaring 2007 “The Year of Philippa.” Deep curiosity about the world and the people in it provided the education that mattered most.

In partnership with the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, this event is part of the Democracy & Debate theme semester.

Election Integrity: A WeListen Staff Discussion (October 22, 2020 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/78175 78175-19987076@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 22, 2020 11:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: WeListen Staff

This WeListen session is open to all UM staff members. All voices and views are welcome and the Zoom link will be shared once you've RSVP'd!

RSVP here: http://bit.ly/WLOctober20

We will discuss Election Integrity as the 2020 Presidential Election approaches amidst conversation around mail-in voting, the counting of absentee ballots and access to the polls across the country.

Our aim is to bring liberals, conservatives, libertarians- everyone across the political spectrum- together for constructive conversation. The goal of WeListen discussions is not to debate or argue, but to understand the views and values of others and to learn from their perspectives. The session will begin with a brief content presentation to provide a basic understanding of the topic. No specific level of knowledge is required to participate in WeListen discussions.

By participating in WeListen sessions, staff members will:
- Expand understanding of a prominent political topic
- Practice discussing difficult topics with others,
- Gain openness to new ideas and perspectives,
- Learn to productively challenge an idea, and
- Form a sense of community among fellow staff members.

Questions? Email us at welistenstaff@umich.edu.

This event is supported by the WeListen Staff Series planning committee with members from the Ginsberg Center, the International Institute, LSA Psychology and Michigan Medicine.

Penny Stamps Speaker Series & UMMA Present: Live Q&A with Philippa Hughes (October 22, 2020 5:10pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/78338 78338-20012744@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 22, 2020 5:10pm

here .

Please join us for a live question and answer session with Philippa P.B. Hughes.

For any questions about the event or to share accommodation needs, please email lherbert@umich.edu and chrissti@umich.edu -- we are eager to help ensure that this event is inclusive to you. egister for October 13th.

Thanks to our partners at the Penny Stamps School of Art & Design, the Ginsberg Center for Community Service & Learning, the Ann Arbor City Clerk's Office, MUSIC Matters, and the Center for World Performance Studies.

Pedro Reyes and Magalí Arriola: A Conversation (November 6, 2020 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/77325 77325-19840080@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 6, 2020 8:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Mexican artist Pedro Reyes has won international attention for large-scale projects that address current social and political issues. Through a varied practice utilizing sculpture, performance, video, and activism, Reyes explores the power of individual and collective organization to incite change through communication, creativity, happiness, and humor. He designs ongoing projects that propose playful solutions to social problems. From turning guns into musical instruments, to hosting a People’s United Nations to address pressing concerns, to offering ecologically-friendly grasshopper burgers from a food cart, Reyes transforms existing problems into ideas for a better world. In the artist’s hands, complex subjects like political and economic philosophies are reframed in ways that are easy to understand, such as a puppet play featuring Karl Marx and Adam Smith fighting over how to share cookies.

Reyes has had solo exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (2014); The Power Plant, Toronto (2014); the Jumex Museum, Mexico City (2014); the Queens Museum of Art, Queens, New York (2013); Labor, Mexico City (2012, 2010); Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2011); Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2011); CCA Kitakyushu, Kitakyushu, Japan (2009); Bass Museum, Miami (2008); and San Francisco Art Institute (2008). He has also participated in Sharjah Biennial 11, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates; In the Spirit of Utopia, Whitechapel Gallery, London; and The Carnegie International, Pittsburgh.

Magalí Arriola is Director of Museo Tamayo in Mexico City. She was KADIST Lead Curator for Latin America from 2016 to 2019, and curated the Mexican Pavilion for the 58 Venice Biennial (Pablo Vargas Lugo, Acts of God, 2019). She was Chief Curator at Museo Jumex between 2011 and 2014, and Chief Curator of Museo Tamayo between 2009 and 2011. She was visiting curator at the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Art in San Francisco in 2006. Among her independent projects are The Sweet Burnt Smell of History: The 8th Panama Biennial (2008); What once passed for a future, or The landscapes of the living dead (Art2102, Los Angeles, 2005); Alibis (Mexican Cultural Institute, Paris /Witte de With, Rotterdam, 2002); Erógena (Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, Mexico City / SMAK/ Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Ghent, 2000). Arriola has extensively written for books, and catalogues and has contributed to publications such as Art Forum, Curare, Frieze, Mousse, Manifesta Journal, and The Exhibitionist, among others.

Before analysis, data must be retrieved, scrubbed of identifiable information, cleaned (e.g., addressed missing data, reshaped appropriately), and delivered. Using biomedical and transportation datasets as examples of how this generalizable process works, this workshop will walk attendees through a real-world pipeline used to process and deliver datasets. Documentation and code will be made available through GitLab to allow for coding along with the demonstration. As a result of this workshop, attendees will leave with a practical template for implementing their own a data science pipeline.

Video is being acquired at an alarming rate across domains, including social research, healthcare, entertainment, sporting and more. The ability to code this video—attribute certain properties, labels, and other annotations—in support of analytical domain-relevant questions is critical; otherwise, human coding is required. Human coding, however, is laborious, expensive, not repeatable, and, worse, often error prone. Video coding, an area within artificial intelligence and computer vision, seeks automated and semi-automated methods to support more effective and robust video coding. This workshop will review the state of the art in video coding from a capabilities, limitations and tooling perspective and present real-world use-cases.
