CSEAS Fridays at Noon Lecture Series. #Refuse to Forget, #Remember 65: Millennials and Affective Engagement with New Order Violence (January 19, 2018 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/46926 46926-10700262@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, January 19, 2018 12:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Center for Southeast Asian Studies

Since 1998, Indonesian NGOs have launched numerous campaigns against unresolved cases of New Order (1966-1998) authoritarian violence. Early efforts led by those with direct experience of New Order era repression focused on documentation, gathering testimonies, organizing victims, raising awareness, “straightening” history, and advocating for human rights tribunals and other legal forms of justice. Currently, these modes of engagement and organization are changing, particularly among millennials. Drawing on field research between 2014-2017, I consider how youth are engaged and invoked by differently positioned actors and advocates and how youth themselves initiate projects to understand, know, and remember authoritarian violence. I document and analyze a shift in these campaigns from earlier legal and documentary modes of truth seeking and history writing to strategies of presentation and engagement that rely on embodied memory, “living in”, empathy, historical re-enactment, art, music, drama and aesthetics. While these current affective initiatives are deeply political, those who enact them often claim a space beyond politics. As stigmatization, historical injustices, and shades of authoritarianism persist despite on-going efforts to #remember history, I suggest that the affective dynamics linking and dividing historical moments, individuals and groups drive both action and inaction in the political present.

CSEAS Fridays-at-Noon Lecture Series. Social Media, Puppets, and Global Identities in Southeast Asia (March 30, 2018 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/49713 49713-11498738@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 30, 2018 12:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Center for Southeast Asian Studies

Southeast Asians are among the most frequent users of Facebook, Youtube, and Twitter, primarily because of the extreme increase of smart phone availability. Thus, social media has become a new space for puppet artists and audiences around Southeast Asia to share and talk. Ownership, heritage, and identity remain key topics in the virtual space, just like they do in the physical spaces. This talk connects the local with the global through social media, recognizing that urban spaces exist not only as built physical structures—but are products of people’s imaginations. It is in these spaces that unique reclamations and promotions of traditional performing arts are happening in diverse ways.

Jennifer Goodlander is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance at Indiana University where she teaches Asian performance, theatre history, and performance studies. She is also Director of the Southeast Asian and ASEAN Studies Program. Her research has been published in numerous journals and edited book collections. Her book, Women in the Shadows: Gender, Puppets, and the Power of Tradition in Bali was published in 2016 by Ohio University Press. She recently completed a second book, Puppets and Cities: Articulating Identities in Southeast Asia, which is expected to be published in the fall of 2018. She is also the current president for the Association of Asian Performance. Jennifer performs Balinese shadow puppetry both nationally and internationally.

Politicians and Social Media in the Global South (April 14, 2018 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/51880 51880-12274528@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, April 14, 2018 9:00am
Location: North Quad
Organized By: School of Information

A one-day seminar workshop to examine contemporary scholarship on political social media in the Global South. The workshop will feature a mix of talks and small workgroup sessions to explore these topics, with specific attention to politicians and political collectives.

In the last decade, politicians in various parts of the world have invested in social media campaigns, including in settings where a relatively small proportion of the voting public is actually online. Leaders may use social media for a range of reasons including to actively court constituents, to present a narrative on their political program to the international community, or to use the affordances of social media to frame the agenda on a specific issue.

Social media can also present a means for politicians to bypass the free professional media corps to directly speak to the electorate, and exercise greater control over the story crafted about them. After an early phase of enthusiasm on the scope of social media to bring decentralized power to the people, we increasingly have a balanced view of the potential and risks of online behavior for democratic societies.

Today, we see a social media environment in which a vast majority of major national politicians in countries throughout the world build social media presences for a diverse mix of these reasons. What do these developments mean for the future of political campaigning? What tactics have worked? How is the online strategy impacted by ideology, national economic priorities, or political structure?

U-M Aphasia Community (UMAC) Group - September (September 5, 2018 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/53211 53211-13289317@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, September 5, 2018 9:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: University Center for Language and Literacy

UMAC is a weekly communication group, hosted by the University Center for Language and Literacy (UCLL), and is open to anyone in the aphasia community. UMAC is a great way to meet other people with aphasia while boosting communication skills and confidence.

The group runs from September through November, but is split into monthly sessions. Each monthly session includes four group meetings.

Groups are run by a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist who prepares activities for varying group sizes, skill levels, and topics. We emphasize functional communication that is useful for those of all communication levels and will provide you with new techniques to use long after the session ends.

This group is open to those of all communication skill levels. Aphasia can be incredibly isolating and takes a toll on confidence — this group takes aim at making connections and building confidence in speech and social interactions.

Details
When: Wednesdays, 9-11:45 a.m. September 5-26, 2018 (four meetings)
Where: UM Facilities Planning & Development Bldg. 2101 Commonwealth Blvd. Suite B., Ann Arbor, MI 48105
Cost: $140 for the 4-week session, due at time of registration.
