The Polarization of Partisanship: A WeListen Staff Discussion (July 26, 2019 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/64331 64331-16316439@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, July 26, 2019 11:00am
Location: School of Social Work Building
Organized By: WeListen Staff

This WeListen session is open to all UM staff members. All voices and views are welcome and lunch will be provided!

RSVP here: http://bit.ly/WLJuly19

Polarization has become a buzzword used to describe the current state of U.S. politics, and a perceived lack of dialogue across the political spectrum. People who gravitate toward political extremes tend to dominate news coverage, while the 'exhausted majority' who are more flexible in their views are often forgotten in public discourse.

Are we truly polarized with regard to our political views? Do the media play a role in this divide, whether perceived or real? And how does the two-party system contribute to polarization? Join us for a lively discussion on where we stand and where we're headed.

Our aim is to bring liberals, conservatives, libertarians- everyone across the political spectrum- together for constructive conversation. The goal of WeListen discussions is not to debate or argue, but to understand the views and values of others and to learn from their perspectives. The session will begin with a brief content presentation to provide a basic understanding of the topic. No specific level of knowledge is required to participate in WeListen discussions.

By participating in WeListen sessions, staff members will:
- Expand understanding of a prominent political topic
- Practice discussing difficult topics with others,
- Gain openness to new ideas and perspectives,
- Learn to productively challenge an idea, and
- Form a sense of community among fellow staff members.

Questions? Email us at welistenstaff@umich.edu.

This event is co-sponsored by the UM Office of DEI and the LSA DEI Implementation Leads. The planning committee includes staff members from the Ginsberg Center, the International Institute, LSA Psychology, UM Poverty Solutions, and the UM Shared Services Center.

But there is something we can do about our internal environment: the state of our mind, our ability to handle challenges, and bounce back. In this session, Seppälä will explore different empirically validated techniques to improve our emotional intelligence, our social connection, and our ability to endure and thrive no matter what comes our way.

About Seppälä:
Emma Seppälä, PhD is Science Director of Stanford University’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education and the author of The Happiness Track (HarperOne, 2016). Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

Positive Links sessions take place at Michigan Ross, and are free and open to the public.

About the talk:
Creativity is responsible for all human progress. Unfortunately, powerful forces in most classroom, workplace, and home environments can kill the motivation for creativity. In this interactive session, Harvard Professor Teresa Amabile will describe the science underlying these discoveries, as well as the science behind keeping creativity alive. The audience will leave with tips and tools for nurturing their own creativity and facilitating creative growth in their children, students, and work colleagues.

About Amabile:
Teresa Amabile has researched and written about creativity for over 40 years. Beginning with a series of papers in the 1970s and 1980s, she was instrumental in establishing the social psychology of creativity – the study of how the social environment can influence creative behavior, primarily by influencing motivational state.

Amabile’s research has examined individual creativity and productivity, team creativity, and organizational innovation. This program of research has yielded a comprehensive theory of creativity and innovation; methods for assessing creativity, motivation, and the work environment; and a set of prescriptions for maintaining and stimulating both individual creativity and organizational innovation.

Her more recent research investigated how everyday life inside organizations can influence people and their performance by affecting inner work life, the confluence of motivation, emotion, and perceptions. She is currently studying retirement and post-employment life, including the impact of creative activities on attitudes toward aging and experiences in later life.

Amabile’s scholarly work has appeared in a variety of psychology and organizational behavior journals, as well as her 2011 book (with Steven Kramer), The Progress Principle: Using Small Wins to Ignite Joy, Engagement, and Creativity at Work. She has presented her work to audiences in a variety of settings, including Pixar, Genentech, TEDx Atlanta, Apple, and The World Economic Forum in Davos.

In 2018, Amabile received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management, the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Israel Organizational Behavior Conference, and the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. In 2011 and 2013, she was named to the global Thinkers50 list.

Amabile holds a BS in Chemistry from Canisius College and a PhD in psychology from Stanford University.

Project Management Certification (October 6, 2019 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/61540 61540-15126018@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, October 6, 2019 1:00pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Tauber Institute for Global Operations

Once again, the Tauber Institute, in conjunction with the International Project Management Association (IPMA), is sponsoring a Project Management certification class and exam for graduate business and engineering students and staff.

In order to participate, you will need to reflect upon a project management experience (for example: a work project, an engineering design experience/senior capstone, Ross' MAP project, Tauber team project, etc). If you cannot make it to the classes (due to project travel, MAP, or other another class), the sessions will be recorded. Homework (mastery verification) will be required after each session.

The cost to an individual to take the exam is normally $595, however, Tauber is offering the exam at a substantial discount to non-Tauber students: $500 and to Tauber students: $150. Certification is valid for 5 years. Three certification classes will be taught by Professor Eric Svaan on the following dates:

Sunday, March 24 (1:00 - 4:30 pm, Ross 0240)
Sunday, April 7 (1:00 - 4:30 pm, Ross 0240)
Sunday, October 6 (1:00 - 4:30 pm, Ross 0240)

The certification exam, administered by IPMA-USA is scheduled for November 17, 2019 (11:00 - 3:00 pm) at the Ross School of Business. Successfully passing the exam will yield IPMA's Level D certification (Certified Project Management Associate).

Over the last two years, all students who have taken the exam have passed!

Project Management is a powerful skill set to have in your toolbox as you look for full-time employment!

REGISTRATION: Please register through iMpact by clicking here:
https://tauber.umich.edu/events-training/project-management-certification/2019-03-24/project-management-certification-2019

NOTE: The $500 (for non-Tauber students) or $150 fee (for Tauber students) is non-refundable.

HOSTED BY: Tauber Institute for Global Operations. For questions about this event, please contact tauberinstitute@umich.edu or visit tauber.umich.edu.

What is IPMA Level D® (Certified Project Management Associate)? The IPMA Level D is an internationally recognized entry-level qualification in the area of project management. This designation, which demonstrates the individual's ability to understand the basics of project management, is similar to the exam-oriented, knowledge-based certifications of other major Project Management associations. For many, Level D® is the first step towards a professional project or program manager role. It is the first step in a sequence (C, B and A) to be earned by demonstration of success in larger PM responsibility sets.

The U-M Museum Studies Department is pleased to present William S. Pretzer, Senior Curator of History, Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture

The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture opened on the National Mall in Washington, DC, in September 2016.  More than six million individuals have visited the museum in its first three years of operation.

The Presidential Commission created in 2001 directed the museum to “give voice to the centrality of the African American experience and make it possible for all people to understand the depth, complexity, and promise of the American experience.”

From the beginning, Founding Director Lonnie G. Bunch III and his staff heeded the exhortation of historian John Hope Franklin, chair of the museum’s Scholarly Advisory Committee, “to tell the unvarnished truth.” That principle energized an exhibition plan informed by public conversations, a collecting program relying on individual and family legacies, a narrative format balancing the personal with the social, and a funding strategy emphasizing the “African American experience as the lens through which we understand what it is to be American.”

This presentation demonstrates the impact of these foundational principles and strategies through an illustrated tour of the inaugural exhibitions.

This program is co-sponsored by the University of Michigan Museum of Art.

Storytelling is one of the oldest forms of educational entertainment known to mankind. From the West African tradition of the Griot to modern day Moth events, storytelling environments have served as a means to pass along history, shape culture, share helpful lessons, and establish a sense of belonging and community.

The U-M Comprehensive Studies Program and Department of Afroamerican and African Studies invite you to explore themes related to campus life, coming of age, and learning and growing, at this series of Moth Style Storyteller Lounge events. Storytellers include students, faculty and staff, and Voices of Wisdom (alums or community members).

Positive Links:
The Positive Links Speaker Series, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations, offers inspiring and practical research-based strategies for building organizations that are high performing and bring out the best in its people. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

Positive Links sessions take place at Michigan Ross, and are free and open to the public.

About the talk:
Diversity initiatives are prevalent, but not necessarily effective. These initiatives at times not only fail to result in the intended consequence of increased diversity and inclusion, but also produce unintended consequences that undermine their effectiveness. In this presentation, Leslie will describe the unintended consequences diversity initiatives can produce and provide examples of how even well-intentioned efforts to foster diversity and inclusion can go astray. She will also discuss strategies for making diversity initiatives more effective and thus better leveraging the positive consequences of diversity for individuals, organizations, and societies.

About Leslie:
Lisa M. Leslie is an Associate Professor of Management and Organizations at the Stern School of Business, New York University. She received her AB in Social Psychology from Princeton University and her MA and PhD in Organizational Psychology from the University of Maryland. Prior to joining Stern in 2013, she spent six years as an Assistant Professor at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota.

Leslie’s research focuses on diversity in organizations, and specifically understanding why organizational diversity initiatives often produce unintended consequences and what can be done to make them more effective. She also has secondary research interests in cross-cultural organizational behavior and conflict management. Leslie has received many awards for her research, which has appeared in journals spanning a number of different disciplines, and has served as an Associate Editor for the Academy of Management Journal.

Host:
Lindred Greer, Associate Professor of Management and Organizations

Sponsors:
The Center for Positive Organizations thanks University of Michigan Organizational Learning, Sanger Leadership Center, Tauber Institute for Global Operations, Samuel Zell & Robert H.

The exhortation to be true to oneself is often intended to empower, but it can actually promote apprehension because instructions are rarely provided. Thus, many shy away from what is true to self, take on inauthentic behaviors to fit into their work environments, or at worst, turn to harsh transparency, alienating those around them. In this session, Hewlin will share how people can be authentic “on their own terms” by identifying their thresholds of authenticity as well as personal values that can be integrated into the workplace to: increase work engagement, foster positive relationships, and enhance overall personal well-being.

About Hewlin:
Patricia Faison Hewlin is the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs, and Associate Professor in the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University. She is also a visiting professor at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in Chengdu, China. Prior to joining academia, she was a Vice President for Citi, where she managed financial centers in New York City.

Hewlin conducts research on how organization members and leaders engage in authentic expression, as well as factors that impede authenticity in the workplace. Her research has primarily centered on employee silence, and the degree to which members suppress personal values and pretend to embrace organizational values, a behavior she terms as “creating facades of conformity.” Her most recent research explores authenticity from a cross-cultural perspective, and how organizations, particularly leaders can leverage diverse and divergent authentic self-expressions among followers, while promoting positive work interactions and productivity.

Hewlin is published in several academic journals including Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Organization Science, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, and Journal of Chinese Management. She has also contributed to the Globe and Mail, Huffington Post, Getting Smart, and Harvard Business Review.

On a personal note, Hewlin enjoys traveling, solving puzzles, and quiet moments with her family.

Host:
Jane Dutton, co-founder of the Center for Positive Organizations; Robert L. Kahn Distinguished University Professor Emerita of Business Administration and Psychology

Sponsors:

We will discuss Healthcare by learning about policies put forth by the Democratic and Republican parties, and examining systems in other countries. We'll also consider the impact of lobbyists on prescription drug costs, and discuss plans and terminology being used by 2020 presidential candidates.

Value the Voice is co-sponsored by the University of Michigan Museum of Art.

Hierarchy is the most ubiquitous way in which human beings organize social interactions. However, hierarchy comes with substantial downsides in terms of inequities and conflicts. As a result, organizations have explored flatter modes of organizing, such as holacracy, which unfortunately have yet to yield much success. In this presentation, Greer will explore the possibility that hierarchy may still be the most effective form of organization but needs to be used wisely. She will discuss data-driven strategies which can allow hierarchy to be a useful and positive organizational tool, including helping leaders learn how to ‘flex’ the hierarchy for bursts of flatness, to humanize the hierarchy through sharing emotions at work, and to reduce competitions around hierarchy by creating areas of individual ownership and autonomy.

About Greer:
Lindy Greer is an Associate Professor of Management and Organizations at Michigan Ross and the Faculty Director of the Sanger Leadership Center. Her research focuses on how to lead effective organizational teams with specific interests in leadership skills in conflict management, diversity and inclusion, vision crafting, and the communication of emotions.

Lindy has published in top management and psychology research outlets such as Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of Applied Psychology, Science, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, among others. Her work has also been covered in well-known media outlets including The New York Times, CNN, Forbes, and Fast Company. She has received awards for her research from the Academy of Management and American Psychological Association, and she was recently named one of the Top 40 under 40 Business School Professors by Poets and Quants.

Lindy is currently an Associate Editor at the Academy of Management Journal, on the boards of seven of the top management and psychology journals, and has served on the boards of professional associations such as the International Association of Conflict Management and the Conflict Management Division of the Academy of Management. Lindy received her BS from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and her PhD in social and organizational psychology from Leiden University in the Netherlands. She joined the team at Ross in 2019.

Is it Really Better to Give than Receive?

Positive Links:
The Positive Links Speaker Series, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations, offers inspiring and practical research-based strategies for building organizations that are high performing and bring out the best in its people. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

About the talk:
The greatest barrier to generosity isn't that people are unwilling or unable to help, but that people don't ask for what they need. Requests drive the giving-receiving cycle. Drawing on his new book, All You Have To Do Is Ask, Baker describes the four asking-giving styles, how to assess your style, how to overcome the obstacles to asking, how to make effective requests, and how to figure out who to ask. He will present several tools that individuals, teams, and organizations use to create a robust culture of workplace generosity. In-person attendees will have the opportunity to use the tools in real time.

About Baker:
Wayne Baker is Robert P. Thome Professor of Business Administration and Professor of Management & Organizations at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. He is also Professor of Sociology at the University of Michigan and Faculty Associate at the Institute for Social Research. He currently serves as Faculty Director of the Center for Positive Organizations.

His teaching and research focus on social capital, social networks, generosity, positive organizational scholarship, and values. His management and leadership articles appear in venues such as Harvard Business Review, Chief Executive Magazine, and Sloan Management Review. His latest book, All You Have To Do Is Ask, will be published in January 2020.

He puts his knowledge into practice as a frequent guest speaker, management consultant, and as an advisor and board member of Give and Take Inc., developers of the Givitas collaborative technology platform.

Prior to joining the Michigan faculty, he was on the faculty at the University of Chicago business school. He earned his PhD in sociology from Northwestern University and was a post-doctoral research fellow at Harvard University.

Value the Voice is co-sponsored by the University of Michigan Museum of Art.
