Fall Retreats
Thursday, November 4, 4:00 PM - 9:00 PM ET
Friday, November 5, 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM ET

Held in-person at the Ross School of Business

Applications due Oct. 17, 2021

Story Lab develops executive-level presence and communication skills through storytelling workshops and events. To be an effective leader — at work, in the community, or in your personal life — you must be able to communicate with impact. Often this means telling stories that are meaningful to you and others, and doing so in the rich language and expressive style of a seasoned storyteller. If you can craft and deliver an effective story, you will be better able to convey your value to recruiters, inspire and motivate classmates and colleagues, and influence your audience. At Story Lab, you’ll find an immersive experience and an opportunity to hone your skills in a safe and supportive environment.

This half-day retreat will be led by expert storytellers who will lead you through exercises to build your confidence and realize your unique communication style while celebrating extraordinary displays of leadership on stages large and small. A meal will be provided.

Who should participate in the retreat:
Students with a strong interest in building storytelling abilities and leadership development. Any level student at any school is welcome.

How to participate in the retreat:
Fill out the application form (linked at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdn0VTMOQlPesnKVVkGHZhUVTIetagLNRl4ye9LcqKhp0mt2Q/viewform) by October 17. We have a limited number of spots available.

This event is powered by the Sanger Leadership Center, Ross Design + Business, and is in partnership with Student Life and M-LEAD.

Wolverine Support Network is currently accepting applications to become a peer support group leader for the Winter 2022 semester! Leading a WSN group is a great way to hone skills in communication, group management, and accountability while creating a space on campus for honest conversations about mental health.

Leaders facilitate a weekly group that is scheduled around their availability, attend weekly leader training meetings from 6:00-7:15 PM ET on Mondays, attend community-building events, and help with marketing efforts on campus. The overall time commitment is ~3 hours/week, and it is super rewarding. All students interested are encouraged to apply regardless of whether or not they have attended a WSN group. Applications are open to both undergraduate students and graduate students who will be enrolled at U-M in the winter.

The application can be found at bit.ly/W22-Leader-Application or on our website at umichwsn.org/leader-application. If you have any questions regarding the application process or the position itself, please contact the Director of Leader Development, Courtney Jones (courtj@umich.edu).

UJIMA: Collective Work and Responsibility Exhibit Discussion (January 12, 2022 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/90406 90406-21670711@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, January 12, 2022 5:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Department of Afroamerican and African Studies

Please join us for a very special discussion between the curators of the UJIMA exhibit currently
on display in GalleryDAAS (G648 Haven Hall) and through a virtual audio/visual tour: myumi.ch/7ZQn0

DAAS welcomes Solomon Lucy, Zoe Allen, Justin Williams and Kai Dotson of the Black Student Union
with Elizabeth James and Arielle Chen of the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies
as they discuss how the exhibit came to be created and the importance of this message at this time in history.

This exhibit focuses on the concept of Ujima (collective work and responsibility in Swahili)
as it pertains to activism on the campus of the University of Michigan over the years.
By seeing how collective actions can lead to powerful movements, the exhibit presents
a chronological display demonstrating the importance of calling for change.

The majority of photos and articles originate from campus resources
including the Bentley Historical Library, the Michigan Daily's archives and other
original materials.

UJIMA is dedicated to the students, faculty, staff, and alumni of the
University of Michigan who envisioned and exemplified the principle of Ujima to bring
about a more equitable and inclusive university through their thoughts and actions.

Article on the exhibit from The Michigan Daily's Michigan in Color section by Neil Nakkash:

Who should participate in the retreat:
Students with a strong interest in building storytelling abilities and leadership development. Any level student at any school is welcome.

How to participate in the retreat:
Fill out the application form (linked at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfXo3G7yUeqfv_4EeWZGOn2F2W8YhcDkPoVxyhFaLLHkytcLg/viewform) by February 6. We have a limited number of spots available.

This event is powered by the Sanger Leadership Center, Ross Design + Business, and is in partnership with Student Life and M-LEAD.

Anti-racism is the active process of identifying and eliminating racism by changing systems, organizational structures, policies, practices, and attitudes so that power is redistributed and shared equitably (University of Calgary). This peer-led teach-in will engage analytical frameworks for examining systemic cultural, social, economic, and political forces in the community along with individual reflection. Our hope is to raise critical consciousness, understand the opportunity for actions, and how our resources can be distributed. This Teach-In will be facilitated by Dillon Alexandro Cathro.
