Dia De La Muertos (November 1, 2019 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/68327 68327-17046007@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 1, 2019 5:30pm
Location: School of Public Health Bldg I and Crossroads and Tower
Organized By: MENA ( Middle Eastern and North African) Public Health

You are cordially invited to this year’s “Dia de Los Muertos” event taking place on November 1st from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM in the School of Public Health’s Community Room 1680. MENA (Middle Eastern and North African) Public Health, La Salud, and PHSAD (Public Health Students of African Descent) have partnered to present a Dia de Los Muertos event which is meant to commemorate all the lives lost to any discrimination or racism in the U.S. and internationally.

Dia de Los Muertos stems from Mexican traditions and originates from Aztec practices. We use this day to celebrate, not mourn, the lives of our beloved departed and rejoice by sharing ofrendas that remember the individual as they were in life. Although this festive occasion is meant to welcome our loved ones, there are many lives that were forgotten both in life and death. These lives were victimized, racialized, and prosecuted during life as a result of structural racism and exclusion. This year, we hope to raise awareness for the lives that were silenced and empower future practitioners to advocate for these communities and prevent future injustices.
We celebrate in community to provide space for the living and dead, and invite you to join us for an evening of activities, dialogue, food and performances! Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

The “Irrepressible Conflict”: Slavery, the Civil War and America’s Second Revolution (November 5, 2019 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/69096 69096-17244687@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, November 5, 2019 7:00pm
Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)

LECTURE 2 OF A 3-PART SERIES

The “Irrepressible Conflict”: Slavery, the Civil War and America’s Second Revolution – Speaker: Eric London
• The origins of the Civil War
• The role of white workers in the abolition of slavery
• How did Marx view the Civil War?
• Reconstruction, the emergence of the working class, and the origins of Jim Crow

Eric London is a member of the National Committee of the Socialist Equality Party and writer for the World Socialist Web Site with a focus on US politics, immigration, US history, Latin America, workers struggles and democratic rights. He is also the author of the recently released book Agents: The FBI and GPU Infiltration of the Trotskyist Movement.

The Socialist Equality Party (SEP) in the US and its youth and student movement, the International Youth and Students for Social Equality (IYSSE), is holding a series of meetings on “Race, Class and the Fight for Socialism: Perspectives for the Coming Revolution in America.”

This series is the socialist answer to the New York Times “1619 Project,” which has been accompanied by an unprecedented publicity blitz, including at schools and campuses throughout the country. The occasion they cite for the publication of this project is the 400th anniversary of the arrival of 20 African slaves at Port Comfort, Virginia.

The Times project raises the question: Is race the driving force of history, as the Times insists? Or, as Karl Marx analyzed, is it class? Is “anti-black racism … in the very DNA of this country” as the Times writes? Or is the history of the United States fundamentally the history of class struggle? As social inequality reaches record levels, is America heading toward race war or socialist revolution?

The promotion of the 1619 Project takes place under conditions of expanding class struggle internationally and a growing interest in socialism among workers and youth in the United States. Its aim is to block the development of a united movement of workers across all races by cultivating racial divisions.

These meetings will refute the historical falsifications advanced in the 1619 Project, explain their underlying political motivations and present the strategy for socialist revolution in America today.

What would you do with an idea and $10,000?

The Capstone Experience at the Barger Leadership Institute (BLI) supports undergraduate students in designing and implementing evidence-based, collaborative projects that seek to bring about small (and big) wins for the complex, ambiguous problems that exist in our deeply interconnected world.

Join us at one of the sessions to learn about Capstone and meet like-minded students with ideas and skills to collaborate with. Teams, individuals, BLI members or those just interested in learning more are all welcome! Each session is broken into two parts: first, learn about the Capstone Experience; second, engage in a speed-dating exercise to meet other undergraduates interested in building a team.

This event is perfect for: people who want to learn more about the Capstone Experience; people who have an idea or project but need partners; people who have a passion but not a project; people who have skills that would benefit a team but no team.

Question? Reach out to BLI Academic Program Manager Fatema Haque, haque@umich

Liberty in North Korea at the University of Michigan is excited to invite two North Korean advocacy fellows from the LiNK HQ, Jeongyol Ri and Ilhyeok Kim, come to campus on November 6th, 2019!

Join us as they reflect on their first-hand experiences as North Korean escapees, and their adjustment after relocation.

━━
Jeongyol Ri was born in 1998, and spent his childhood in Pyongsong. Math was his most notable passion— by the time he was in elementary school, he had already in mastered a middle school math curriculum. He later went on to represent the the North Korean team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). Over the course of four competitions, he had obtained a four silver medals. His success led the North Korean government to offer him a job, but he did not want to work for the regime. The Hong Kong IMO was Jeongyol’s last chance to defect while abroad; he was only 18 years old. While the rest of his team was packing for the return home, he snuck out and sought asylum at the South Korean consulate. In 2016 Jeongyol resettled in South Korea and in 2019 started Seoul National University.

Ilhyeok Kim was born in 1995 in Saetbyeol when the famine had just begun. As a result of the famine, his father became a broker who helped defectors in South Korea send money to relatives still in North Korea. When Ilhyeok was 12, his father was caught and imprisoned, but was eventually released for owning a Chinese cell phone. From that day onward, the government kept a close eye on his family. Despite the repercussions they would face if they escaped, they bravely decided to flee. In 2011 they arrived in South Korea. Ilhyeok aspires to work for the United Nations one day.

Have you ever wondered how traffic lights respond in real-time and coordinate to relieve congestion? Have you ever seen highway information boards with travel time estimates and wanted to know where they came from? Or maybe you’ve wondered how emergency responders coordinate to respond to traffic accidents on the highway?

This Friday, 11/22, the Michigan Transportation Student Organization (MiTSO) will be offering a tour of the Oakland County Traffic Operations Center (TOC). The TOC is responsible for monitoring all county intersections in real-time, adjusting traffic lights and coordinating them as necessary to reduce congestion. Additionally, they coordinate with emergency response and law enforcement in order to respond to and clear accidents that block the roads.

The tour will be at 1pm and transportation will be provided. We will be leaving GG Brown at 11:30am and will return by 5pm. More details will be provided closer to the event.

If you are interested in attending, please fill out the google form (https://forms.gle/qakMZ8u2DBotAnj56) by noon on Wednesday (11/20) if you are interested so that we can organize transportation!

Professor Alexandra Rosati will be giving a talk on "Evolving the Human Mind: What Our Primate Cousins Reveal about Human Cognition."

Why do humans exhibit flexible, intelligent behavior? Comparative studies of primates, our closest relatives, can help us understand the evolutionary origins of complex human cognition. I will present research examining how other primates like chimpanzees think about the world to address three main questions: how do other animals solve ecological problems like finding food, how do they solve social problems like finding friends, and how do their abilities change and develop over their lifetime? By integrating cognitive science with evolutionary theory, we can understand humans in the context of the natural world.

Continuing Korematsu: Our Fight in the Trump Era (January 30, 2020 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/72117 72117-17939981@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 30, 2020 6:00pm
Location: Hutchins Hall
Organized By: Asian Pacific American Law Students Association

January 30th is the Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution. On February 19th, 1942, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, one of the most blatant forms of racial profiling in US history, which led to the forced removal and incarceration of over 120,000 American citizens and residents on the basis of being ethnically Japanese. Fred T. Korematsu was one of many who refused to be incarcerated, and was arrested. A national civil rights hero, Fred Korematsu appealed his case to the Supreme Court. Although the Supreme Court ruled against him in 1944, in 1983 his conviction was overturned in a coram nobis proceeding where Fred Korematsu addressed the court, saying, “I would like to see the government admit they were wrong, and do something about it so this will never happen again to any American citizen of any race, creed, or color.”

In 2014 and again in 2019, the US government attempted to reopen the Fort Sill camp to incarcerate migrant children from Latin America; Fort Sill was previously used as a concentration camp where Native Americans and Japanese Americans were detained. In June 2017, ICE agents raided and arrested Iraqi families in the Detroit area, leading to the ACLU’s lawsuit, Hamama v. Adducci. Raids on Iraqi families have continued into 2019.

On January 30th, APALSA's Political Action Committee, in partnership with the Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission and Stop Repeating History would like to invite you to attend a screening of the documentary Alternative Facts: The Lies of Executive Order 9066 by Jon Osaki, followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A led by University of Michigan Law student Kevin Luong.

This event features incredible guest speakers: Dr. Karen Korematsu, Don Tamaki, Aamina Ahmed, Mary Kamidoi, and Michael Steinberg. Free and open to the public. Food from Curry On will be provided with RSVP: bit.ly/2tfDsnu

Organized By: Michigan Malaysian Students' Association (MiMSA)

For the past 10 years, the Michigan Malaysian Students' Association (MiMSA) has come together to prepare for one special night every year: the Malaysian Cultural Night.
Free for all, people of all ages are welcome to spend their evening with a musical that delves into Malaysian art, culture and racial dynamics. Guests are also invited for a free dinner with some good Malaysian company after the show. This year, we present Kita.

Kita (Us)

Malaysian Cultural Night 2020 will follow the story of 4 Malaysian students who transferred to the University of Michigan, each with their unique background stories. The light hearted play will showcase unity among ethnically diverse people, and most importantly, the significance of true friendship. The characters will embody individuals that struggle with family expectations, finding their identities away from home, making friends all whilst adapting to a new culture in a new country. This play is highly relatable to students who are studying abroad, and it aims to realize the experience as well as to educate the non-Malaysian audience on our identity. MCN 2020 will also showcase a variety of traditional dances from different ethnic groups in Malaysia.

Sparked by The Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2019《2019年逃犯及刑事事宜相互法律協助法例(修訂)條例草案》, also known as the Extradition Bill, a wave of ongoing protests have begun in Hong Kong since June 2019. The Extradition Bill incident led to a wide-reaching social movement. It is important to note, however, that physical protests and demonstrations were not the only ways through which Hong Kong people expressed their opinions. Promotional art pieces, music, videos, and memes also played significant roles in the movement. In this exhibition, we will present these incredible art pieces, exploring their aesthetics and functions.

The Role of Creative Media in Hong Kong Protests (February 18, 2020 7:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/72963 72963-18107870@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, February 18, 2020 7:00am
Location: Pierpont Commons
Organized By: Hong Kong Human Rights Concern Group

Creative media became a form of passive protest and connected people who shared the same emotions during social unrest in Hong Kong. In this exhibition, we will explore the incredible artworks created in this democratic movement.

Since June, protests have been ongoing in Hong King, sparked by The Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2019. In one of the demonstrations, over two million Hongkongers, which is more than a quarter of the population, went on the streets to express their objection to the bill, and later led to a large scale democratic movement. It is important to note, however, that physical protests and demonstrations were not the only methods Hong Kong people used to voice their opinions. Creation of promotional art pieces, music, videos, and memes were sparked by the protests and played a significant role in the democratic movement.

After 2/12, this exhibit will be available for viewing from 2/18 through 2/27 in the Pierpont Commons Piano Lounge.

Organized By: Wolverines for Life

oin Wolverines for Life at Pierpont Commons to help recruit bone marrow donors. This drive was established to help find a match for Natalia, an 8-year-old girl who may need a bone marrow donor soon.

Natalia was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in August 2019. She has been hospitalized for most of the last few months at University of Michigan’s Mott Children’s Hospital, where she is undergoing chemotherapy. She has about 4 more months to go. Natalia has a very positive attitude. She loves to read (especially Percy Jackson and Warriors books) and do craft projects. Her nurses and doctors love her!

Hopefully chemo will be enough to cure Natalia’s condition. If it isn’t, she will need a bone marrow transplant. As of now, there are NO full matches in the bone marrow registries worldwide. Her 13-year-old brother and her twin sister are not matches.

Natalia’s mixed-race background – Cantonese, Latina (Salvadoran), and white (Dutch/German) – makes it especially hard to find a match. Her bone marrow HLA markers are predominantly Cantonese/white.

One word is dominating the 2020 election cycle: socialism.

Donald Trump and his fascist allies declare the US “will never be a socialist country.” Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg proclaim their desire to save the Democratic Party from socialists, while Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) claim socialism means working within the Democratic Party for mild reforms. The ruling class, presiding over a society dominated by inequality, war and state repression, increasingly views socialism as an immediate threat.

The Socialist Equality Party is running in the 2020 elections to explain what socialism really means. Join the SEP’s candidates—Joseph Kishore for President and Norissa Santa Cruz for Vice President—in the historic struggle to unite all workers internationally, independent of the political parties of the ruling class. The working class is the social force that can replace capitalism with international socialism.

This town hall meeting with Joseph Kishore is part of a national series of meetings being held across the United States, hosted by the IYSSE and the SEP.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: University Students Against Rape/Take Back The Night (USAR/TBTN)

University Students Against Rape, Standing Tough Against Rape Society, and Literati Bookstore are delighted to welcome Jaclyn Friedman to the downtown branch of the Ann Arbor District Library for a reading and signing in support of her latest publication, Believe Me: How Trusting Women Can Change the World. This event is free and open to the public. A Q&A and book signing will follow the reading.

About the book:

In Believe Me, contributors ask and answer the crucial question: What would happen if we didn’t just believe women, but acted as though they matter? If we take women’s experiences of online harassment seriously, it will transform the internet. If we listen to and center survivors, we could revolutionize our systems of justice. If we believe Black women when they talk about pain, we will save countless lives. With contributions from many of the most important voices in feminism today, Believe Me is an essential roadmap for the #MeToo era and beyond.

Jaclyn Friedman is a writer, educator and activist, and creator of four books Yes Means Yes: Visions of Female Sexual Power and a World Without Rape (one of Publishers’ Weekly’s Top 100 Books of 2009), What You Really Want: The Smart Girl’s Shame-Free Guide to Sex & Safety, Unscrewed: Women, Sex, Power and How to Stop Letting the System Screw Us All, and her latest, Believe Me: How Trusting Women Can Change the World. Her podcast, also called, Unscrewed, is paving new paths to sexual liberation, and was named one of the Best Sex Podcasts by both Marie Claire and Esquire.

The Cognitive Science Community is excited to announce that we’ll be hosting our 4th annual colloquium online!  In light of COVID-19 and social distancing, we will not be holding an in-person Colloquium this year. Instead, we will be moving the showcase to an online format which will be open for viewing April 13th - April 19th.

We hope you will tune into the online event to view the research projects being showcased! The website will be open to watch the videos, and there will be an opportunity to ask the researchers questions through our slack channel April 13th - April 19th. Our slack link is: cogscicommunity.slack.com. The channel for discussion is #research_showcase_discussion_Let us know if you have any questions regarding using slack.

We hope you’re all staying safe and healthy!

Best,
Cognitive Science Community

*Note: This event is also listed in the graduate student welcome calendar. Both listings are the same event and the inclusion in the graduate student calendar was to explicitly encourage non-undergrad students to come as we will be featuring some orgs solely for grad / professional students.*

Did you know there's nearly 20 different LGBTQ+ organizations active at the University of Michigan? Now, we can't have a panel with all of them, but we can introduce you to a few of them! Join representatives from five of these orgs to talk about their purpose, vision, and goals, and also to learn about what it's like to lead as an LGBTQ+ person at this university. We'll share how to connect with all the other orgs as well, so you can easily find your people. Come meet your community with us!

Spectrum Center Event Accessibility Statement:
The Spectrum Center is dedicated to working towards offering equitable access to all of the events we organize. If you have an accessibility need you feel may not be automatically met at this event, fill out our Event Accessibility Form, found at http://bit.ly/SCaccess. You do not need to have a registered disability with the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) or identify as disabled to submit. Advance notice is necessary for some accommodations to be fully implemented, and we will always attempt to dismantle barriers as they are brought up to us. Any questions about accessibility at Spectrum Center events can be directed to spectrumcenter@umich.edu.
