Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)
Organized By: Rackham Graduate School

Though the University of Michigan aspires to cultivate a climate that is welcoming to the members of its diverse student, faculty, and staff bodies, we know that the lived experiences of many in our communities don't always align with these aspirations. Join the CRLT Players for Cuts: Responding to Student Climate Concerns, a two-session series, that invites participants to think together about the many forces that can shape campus climate both positively and negatively. Built around a series of vignettes that explore students' experiences of marginalization, each session offers a space where participants can practice engaging in difficult conversations about and across differences in identity while also reflecting on their personal responsibilities to cultivating inclusive and equitable spaces within and outside of the classroom.

In the first session, participants will:

- Analyze a series of bias incidents from the perspective of a targeted student

- Reflect on their own experiences of marginalizing behavior-- as target, aggressor, or bystander

- Explore strategies for intervening effectively when they observe marginalizing behavior and for responding productively when a concern about their own behavior is raised

Graduate school can be daunting. It’s often an extended exercise in not being told about the things you’d better know. The path to success is seldom smooth nor clear, populated by busy people and opaque processes. Alas, here is a forum for graduate students to hear from their senior colleagues about challenges in their academic journeys and how they overcame them. We asked an interdisciplinary group of these busy people to devote two hours of their time to answering your questions. Join us to gain insight from their hindsight!

Matika Wilbur, an acclaimed photographer from the Tulalip and Swinomish tribes (Washington), is the creator and director of Project 562 and the only Native American photographer and social documentarian to be welcomed into each of the 562+ Native American sovereign territories in the United States. For the past four years, Wilbur has collaborated with scores of tribes to share the images and truths of Native American Peoples.

Join us for an evening of discussion as Wilbur presents "19 Lessons from Indian Roads"; providing remarkable insights into contemporary Native American life, driving the conversation forward to encourage U.S. citizens to evolve beyond the appropriation and neglect of indigenous images and traditions through a new model of awareness, with honest photographic representation and direct narratives of America's first people.

Wilbur says, "I believe the viewers will experience great understanding and connection with these remarkable people, just as they have enlightened and inspired me. By exposing the astonishing variety of the Indian presence and reality, we will build cultural bridges, abandon stereotypes, and renew and inspire our national legacy.”

Schwarzman Scholars is a highly-selective, fully-funded scholarship program, based at the distinguished Tsinghua University in Beijing, designed to ensure that the next generation of business, political and civil society leaders around the world can effectively serve as bridges between China and the rest of the world. We aim to achieve this by (1) recruiting promising young leaders from around the world, people who have the ambition and talent to take on executive roles in government, civil society, or business and who have a commitment to building understanding among people with differing perspectives; (2) educating them about China’s global role via a one-year Master’s in global affairs at Tsinghua and (3) linking them to senior mentors in their field in China and to their peers among China’s rising young leaders. You may also find it helpful to view this video introduction, this profile in the New York Times, and/or to download the program’s full brochure.
Applications for the 2019-2020 class open April 2018, with selections made in November 2018. (Applicants with Chinese passports apply by May 2018, with selections made in September 2018).
Scholars will hone their leadership skills through a curriculum designed by leading academics from around the globe and frequent interactions with distinguished guest lecturers. Additionally, Scholars will spend considerable time outside the classroom developing firsthand exposure to China and its people through thematic study tours, a mentoring program and internships with key employers in Beijing. All classes will be taught in English, and students will have the opportunity to study Mandarin. Schwarzman Scholars will recruit an internationally diverse cohort each year, people who have the ambition and talent to take on executive roles in government, civil society, or business and who have a commitment to building understanding among people with differing perspectives, welcoming applicants up to age 28.
The program has been built with the support of donors from around the world and a distinguished Advisory Board consisting of important leaders including Prime Minister Tony Blair, President Nicolas Sarkozy, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, Tung Chee Hwa, Henry Kissinger, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice, Hank Paulson, Bob Rubin, Jim Wolfensohn, Richard Haas, Richard Levin, Sir Colin Lucas, Richard Brodhead, Nobel Laureate Chen Ning Yang, John Thornton, Yo-Yo Ma, and Bob Dudley.

Dewey Lecture Series: “Detroit Collaborative Design Center: Amplifying the Diminished Voice of Detroit's Urban Landscape” (April 6, 2018 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/50340 50340-11713022@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 6, 2018 9:00am
Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)
Organized By: Ginsberg Center

The Ginsberg Dewey Lecture highlights the work of a scholar-activist whose research and civic engagement are intertwined and recognizes the enduring legacy of philosopher and educational reformer John Dewey, who taught at U of M in the 1890’s, and later, went on to found the New School for Social Research. Chief among Dewey’s enduring ideas were that thought is the means through which we come to understand and connect with the world around us, and, that universal education is the key to teaching people how to abandon their habits and think creatively via learning through doing.

Keynote will be given by Charles Cross, ASLA, the Senior Landscape Designer at the Detroit Collaborative Design Center; as well as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture. He maintains a firm belief that underserved communities deserve good design, and therefore should be the patrons of the process -not just the consumers of the end product.

There will also be highlights from University of Michigan community engaged research projects.

Michigan Meeting - Ending Gender-Based Violence (May 3, 2018 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/50230 50230-11687523@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, May 3, 2018 8:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Department of Sociology

Gender-based violence among adolescents and young adults is an intractable problem. Though much work has been done to end gender-based violence, the scope of the problem can still feel daunting. The 2018 Michigan Meeting will bring together scholars, practitioners, and activists from across disciplines to share strategies and develop Innovative ideas for moving forward.

Please join this dynamic 3-day event that aims to inspire research and inform policy, pedagogy, and practice. The agenda will highlight activist, survivor and student perspectives. Using an intersectional lens, we will attend to the broad range of inequalities that are experienced in school, work and personal life.

This event is made possible by the sponsorship of the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies at the University of Michigan. The Michigan Meetings are a series of annual inter-disciplinary meetings on topics of broad interest and contemporary importance to both the public and the academic community.

The planning group has partnered with the University of Michigan’s Injury Prevention Center, who will be hosting a one-day summit on May 2 on campus sexual assault prevention.

For more information, please contact Dr. Elizabeth A. Armstrong (elarmstr@umich.edu).
