Organized By: Graduate Rackham International

In 1922, philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein declared that “the limits of my language mean the limits of my world." With the globally-connected community at the University of Michigan in mind, we invite you to an exploration of the cross-cultural academic expressive production that accompanies thinking and writing from a non-English background. Taking the University of Michigan as a case study, we hope to engage questions of scholarship and public expression incubated in the globalized environment that is the contemporary American university. Rather than focusing on the mechanics of English as a Second Language or as a lingua franca, we seek a discussion around scholarly expression in a multicultural, globalized academia. How does an American academic culture of expression interact with the increasingly international body of authors on campus? And, can non-normative writing paradigms find footing in American academia? Please join us for a scholarly conversation on multilingualism and the pleasures and difficulties of translation.

Participating Panelists:
Samer Ali (Near Eastern Studies)
Miranda Brown (Asian Languages & Cultures)
Ana Morcillo Pallares (Architecture)
Acrisio Pires (Linguistics)

Hors d'oeuvres to be served

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Germanic Languages & Literatures

This program is designed for students without a German language background who are looking for an in-depth look at the culture and context of the metropolis of Berlin. German majors should consider the University of Michigan programs in Freiburg and Tübingen.

Eligibility:
* Sophomore, Junior, or Senior standing
* Good academic standing
* Minimum 3.0 overall GPA
* No previous German language study is required

Academics:
Students must take 16-18 credit hours per semester. One German language course (4 credits) is required for beginning and intermediate students. All other courses are taught in English and worth 3 credits unless otherwise stated. Two week-long field trips will be included in the program, as well as day excursions that complement your learning in the classroom and contribute to a general knowledge of German culture and society.

Please see program website (IES) for details.

Application Website: https://mcompass.umich.edu/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.ViewProgram&Program_ID=10946

If you have any questions how these credits could count towards a German major or minor, please ask Andrew, ajmills@umich.edu, or Kalli, kallimz@umich.edu.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Germanic Languages & Literatures

The program takes place in the Winter term, and is intended for students who have completed at least German 221/231 or a 300-level German course by the end of the Fall 2017 term.

The German Department strongly recommends that you precede your stay in Tübingen by attending two four-week sessions at the Goethe Institut in Schwäbisch Hall (January and/or February) where you will live with a host family. This segment is not part of the CGIS program itself. Please talk with Andrew or me about the Goethe segment (see our contact information at the bottom of this email).

The CGIS portion in Tübingen will start early in March with a mandatory Kompaktkurs (6 credits) or a Startkurs (3 credits). While you will be enrolled for the Winter 2018 term at the University of Michigan, you will then take classes during "Sommersemester" at the Universität Tübingen (mid April - late July). You will earn 15-18 credits for Winter 2018: the courses that you take in Tübingen can be language courses for international students or regular university courses. Various university courses outside the English Department are taught in English.

Tübingen credits can be used to satisfy degree requirements for a German major or minor.

For more information about the Tübingen program, go to: https://mcompass.umich.edu/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.ViewProgram&Program_ID=10248

Join CGIS Intercultural Program Advisor, Cristina Zamarron along with program leader Steven Wright, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, COE; and CGIS alumni as they discuss Food, Energy, Water Systems in Costa Rica.  Learn more!

Investigate the complex relationships between the food, energy, and water systems of our society on this 3-credit, 3-week spring program. This year, the program will be taught by Steven Wright, professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

To study our intrinsically connected and interdependent food, energy, and water (FEW) systems, one must understand how these systems form an indispensable nexus for human life. Among other benefits, an understanding of this nexus will help us mitigate and adapt to the challenges of global climate change. Costa Rica, a leader in sustainable development, offers many opportunities for hands-on experiences with the FEW nexus, including a rich combination of learning environments, working farms, and laboratories.

The program is ideal for engineering, environmental science, and natural science majors, however all are encouraged to participate. Students with an interest in system dynamics, environmental issues, climate change adaptation, and other sustainability subjects should apply. While the program has a more technical focus, discussions will include policy aspects related to environmental management and sustainable development.

Academic Year in Freiburg 2018/2019

Friday, December 1: Early Application Deadline

The best way to get to know Germany really well is to live there for an extended time. Here is a recent article how studying abroad positively affects your career chances: https://www.iie.org/en/Why-IIE/Announcements/2017-10-02-Gaining-an-Employment-Edge

By studying in Freiburg for a year, you can practically earn all credits required for a German major and may possibly get distribution credits and credits towards a second major; and you will live in one of the most attractive and desired places in Germany. Sophomores are allowed to participate in this program.

Eligibility:
* Minimum 3.0 GPA
* Good academic standing
* Sophomore, Junior, or Senior standing by Fall 2018
* Completion of German 232 or equivalent prior to September 2018

The 2018/19 consortium program will be led by University of Michigan Professor Kerstin Barndt, who will also be teaching some of the courses. Feel free to contact her with questions: barndt@umich.edu! The program also has a very savvy Associate Director, who lives in Freiburg throughout the entire year.

Tuition for this year-long program is covered by a program fee ($7,500/semester), and students receive University of Michigan in-residence credit for the courses they take during the Academic Year in Freiburg. Students are not required to pay University of Michigan tuition during the year abroad. Additional costs include an administrative fee ($1,200), travel, room, and board. Students remain eligible for financial aid. In addition, the German Department will reduce the program fee for all applicants by $1,000 this year. Further funding opportunities (up to $3,000) are available from the department as well; to inquire, please contact germandept@umich.edu.

For more information, see the AYF website at http://www.ayf.uni-freiburg.de/.

A short informational video is available at https://umich.app.box.com/s/3fm5443caoz2bioald1r8jrok4o20qe9.

Here is the link to the application website from CGIS (Center for Global and Intercultural Study): https://mcompass.umich.edu/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.ViewProgram&Program_ID=10247

Apply early! The early application deadline (December 1) guarantees early consideration and advanced notice, making admitted students eligible to apply for further funding opportunities.

Please note: Although this program's application deadline is February 1, students who apply by December 1 will receive advanced notification of admission. Students will then be eligible to apply for the DAAD Undergraduate Scholarship, due January 31.

Even if you were not chosen for the DAAD Undergraduate Scholarship, LSA students in this program may be eligible for additional scholarships through the University of Michigan.

And, what does it mean to think and write from a non-normative background? Please join us for a scholarly conversation on multilingualism and the pleasures and difficulties of translation.

Pär Cassel (History & International Relations)
Gottfried Hagen (Near Eastern Studies)
Se-Mi Oh (Asian Languages & Cultures)

Academic Year in Freiburg 2018/2019

Thursday, February 1: Application Deadline

The best way to get to know Germany really well is to live there for an extended time. Here is a recent article how studying abroad positively affects your career chances: https://www.iie.org/en/Why-IIE/Announcements/2017-10-02-Gaining-an-Employment-Edge

By studying in Freiburg for a year, you can practically earn all credits required for a German major and may possibly get distribution credits and credits towards a second major; and you will live in one of the most attractive and desired places in Germany. Sophomores are allowed to participate in this program.

Eligibility:
* Minimum 3.0 GPA
* Good academic standing

LSA students in this program may be eligible for additional scholarships through the University of Michigan.
