Join SLE for a raft trip on the Huron River! Meet outside the Vandenberg Community Center at 12:30pm in your river/paddling attire and ride together to the Argo Canoe Livery. SLE will provide rafts, paddles and lifejackets for students rented from Argo, and we will paddle together down the river to Gallop Park. We will be paddling on the river from 1-2:30pm, and return to Oxford around 3pm. The river is fairly shallow and gentle, with the exception of a several modest human-made cascades at the start of the trip near Argo Canoe Livery (pictured here).

*consider sunblock, sunhats, sunglasses, hydration (water bottles), and water resistant shoes/sandals that stay on well*

NOTE: The water level on the Huron River is low (it is very shallow), which means that we will probably need to use two-person kayaks instead of five-person rafts.

Possession evolved in response to Ann Arbor artist Jaye Schlesinger’s interest in mindfulness and minimalism and the role they play in personal well being. After disposing (selling, recycling, giving away) of everything that no longer served to enrich her life, Schlesinger decided to merge this exercise with her art practice and depicted all of her remaining possessions in small oil paintings, 380 in total. The paintings depict objects of functionality and ones of beauty, eliciting contemplation and conversation about the ‘stuff’ we choose to live with.

University and community members join forces to deliver a message about climate change through the arts. Featuring cello major Kayla Mathes, who will perform a piece she has written on climate change; poet Sandra Steingraber; and Sara Adlerstein-Gonzalez, who will formally open an art exhibit she’s curated on climate change.

Sara Adlerstein-Gonzalez, PhD, has been a research faculty member at the School for Environment and Sustainability the University of Michigan for fourteen years. Her research program is centered on Great Lakes applied aquatic ecology, with emphasis on population assessments and ecosystem dynamics. She has authored over 50 peer review publications in scientific journals. Dr. Adlerstein is also a visual artist and she is involved with numerous projects bridging the arts and environmental sciences with particular focus on the role of art in conservation. One of her contributions to art and conservation is the creation of the Art & Environment Gallery in SEAS, where she is director and curator. Dr. Adlerstein is an artist member of the WSG gallery in Ann Arbor and her work is part of public and private collections in countries around the world. Her artwork is featured in Poemas de las Madres (Eastern Washington University Press, 1996).

Kayla Mathes is currently an undergraduate student at the University of Michigan pursuing a double degree in cello performance and environmental science. She was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and came to Michigan specifically for the music program in pursuit of becoming a professional musician. Half way through her college career, she discovered a new passion for ecology and environmental sciences which has since taken her down a very different path. She now hopes to pursue a career as a forest ecology researcher and teacher.

Biologist, author, and cancer survivor, Sandra Steingraber, PhD, writes about climate change, ecology, and the links between human health and the environment. Steingraber’s highly acclaimed book, Living Downstream: An Ecologist’s Personal Investigation of Cancer and the Environment, was the first to bring together data on toxic releases with data from US cancer registries and was adapted for the screen in 2010. As both book and documentary film, Living Downstream has won praise from international media. A contributing essayist and editor for Orion magazine, Sandra Steingraber is currently a distinguished scholar in residence at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York.

In his time at Michigan, Ben has been a student activist affiliated with a variety of groups including Science for the People, the Michigan Student Power Network, and the U-M fossil fuel divestment campaign (Divest and Invest). During the 2015-2016 school year, he served as a student leader for Divest and Invest, overseeing campaign successes including the approval of a Faculty Senate Assembly Resolution and campaign endorsement by the Michigan Daily. Ben has published research on pollinator ecology in urban agroecosystems, and serves as the sustainable food, healthy communities program assistant at the Ecology Center in Ann Arbor.

As a scholar of the interdisciplinary literature in environmental science, Stephen Mulkey is an active public interpreter of climate change and sustainability. His recent research focuses on the role of landscape carbon stocks in climate mitigation and on the academic structure of interdisciplinary programs in the environmental and sustainability sciences. From 2011 to 2015, he served as president of Unity College in Maine, a four-year liberal arts institution dedicated to sustainability science.

Theresa Wei Ying Ong, PhD, is a recent University of Michigan Ecology and Evolutionary Biology alum, where she worked with John Vandermeer. Currently, she is a NSF postdoctoral research fellow. She is broadly interested in theoretical agroecology, especially in the setting of urban gardens. Her work focuses on how biocomplexity influences the resilience of these agricultural systems to both ecological and political perturbations. Her scientific work has been published in Nature Communications, and in news outlets including Science Daily. Theresa has helped to organize many political and scientific events at U of M including the Climate Teach-In +50: End the War Against the Planet, the Early Career Scientists Symposium on Humans as a Force of Ecological and Evolutionary Change and the symposium in honor of John Vandermeer: Science with Passion and a Moral Compass. She is a graduate of the Frontiers Masters Program, an initiative to diversify the field of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and a proud member of Science for the People.

Climate Blue welcomes you to experience the breathtaking Netflix documentary, Chasing Coral. Please join us for the film, free food, and a post-film discussion that will surely be worthwhile. Also before the screening stars we will discuss a coral reef conservation opportunity sponsored by the organization, GIVE.

Film Description: Chasing Coral taps into the collective will and wisdom of an ad man, a self-proclaimed coral nerd, top-notch camera designers, and renowned marine biologists as they invent the first time-lapse camera to record bleaching events as they happen. Unfortunately, the effort is anything but simple, and the team doggedly battles technical malfunctions and the forces of nature in pursuit of their golden fleece: documenting the indisputable and tragic transformation below the waves. With its breathtaking photography, nail-biting suspense, and startling emotion, Chasing Coral is a dramatic revelation that won’t have audiences sitting idle for long.

Bill McKibben, an author and environmentalist who in 2014 was awarded the Right Livelihood Prize, sometimes called the "alternative Nobel." His 1989 book The End of Nature is regarded as the first book for a general audience about climate change, and has appeared in 24 languages; he’s gone on to write a dozen more books. He is a founder of 350.org, the first planet-wide, grassroots climate change movement, which has organized twenty thousand rallies around the world in every country save North Korea, spearheaded the resistance to the Keystone Pipeline, and launched the fast-growing fossil fuel divestment movement.

The Schumann Distinguished Scholar in Environmental Studies at Middlebury College and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, he was the 2013 winner of the Gandhi Prize and the Thomas Merton Prize, and holds honorary degrees from 18 colleges and universities. Foreign Policy named him to their inaugural list of the world’s 100 most important global thinkers, and the Boston Globe said he was “probably America’s most important environmentalist.”

A former staff writer for the New Yorker, he writes frequently for a wide variety of publications around the world, including the New York Review of Books,National Geographic, and Rolling Stone. He lives in the mountains above Lake Champlain with his wife, the writer Sue Halpern, where he spends as much time as possible outdoors . In 2014, biologists honored him by naming a new species of woodland gnat—Megophthalmidia mckibbeni—in his honor.

Bill McKibben is the featured presenter of the School for Environment and Sustainability's 16th Peter M. Wege Foundation Lecture on Sustainability.

Dr. Kevin Adkins holds bachelor (UM), master (UM), and doctoral degrees in aerospace engineering. He is presently an Assistant Professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL. Professor Adkins’ interests include unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and their applications, boundary layer and aviation meteorology, and aircraft flight-test. Dr. Adkins’ present research involves using UAS and numerical methods to analyze changes to near-surface meteorology within wind turbine array boundary layers and on-farm research investigating how UAS are best integrated into crop management practices.

Dr. Adkins participated in the initial development of Embry-Riddle’s UAS curriculum and presently serves as a subject matter expert for the Unmanned Safety Institute (USI), the world’s leading provider of UAS safety education and training services to industry and academic institutions, and co-authored their textbook, Unmanned Aircraft Systems and Safety. Professor Adkins helped spearhead the University’s first FAA Section 333 exemption in support of academic research and now conducts research as a FAA certificated Part 107 remote pilot.

Prior to coming to Embry-Riddle, Kevin spent time as an officer and pilot in the United States Air Force and spent over a decade in engineering industry. While in industry, Kevin served as both an aircraft design and lead flight-test engineer. In addition to this, Professor Adkins has worked with NASA on the X-38 CRV and is an active pilot.

Organized By: School for Environment and Sustainability

On behalf of the MUSE Organizing Committee*, you are cordially invited to participate in the 2018 Michigan University-wide Sustainability and Environment (MUSE) Conference.

- The annual flagship event of the MUSE Initiative, the MUSE Conference provides a unique venue for sharing research, building new connections, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among all members of the University of Michigan community engaged in the broad range of sustainability and environment-related research. We welcome the involvement of U-M graduate students, as well as University leadership, faculty, and research fellows from all disciplines, including those in arts, humanities, engineering, and natural and social sciences. The 2018 MUSE Conference will consist of interdisciplinary lectures by speakers including Susan Scotti Parrish, author of The Flood Year 1927: A Cultural History, and Claire Vaye Watkins, author of Gold Fame Citrus, as well as panel discussions, a poster session, network-and skill-building workshops, and a public keynote address and reception at Zingerman’s Greyline event space.

- Participants will have opportunities to present both preliminary and final research findings. Thematic facilitated workshops will engage participants at all career stages in structured collaboration and discussion about emerging developments and debates in cross-cutting research topics.

- Please consider participating in the 2018 MUSE Conference by submitting a short abstract. Abstracts on topics related to sustainability and environment may include (but are not limited to) human behavior, environmental history, policymaking and governance, corporate social and environmental responsibility, public health, built environment and infrastructure, land use, energy, water, climate, and ecosystems. Themed interdisciplinary sessions will be designed once abstracts have been reviewed by a selection committee. We encourage submissions to present either specific research outcomes or broader themes related to your research interests.

- Both oral and poster presentation opportunities are available. Short-form oral presentations may be used to share preliminary results or brief research summaries, while longer presentations allow for more depth. When submitting an abstract, you may also opt-in to facilitate a workshop discussion and/or be considered for a brief Up-goer 5-style presentation at the public reception (explaining your research using the “ten hundred” most-used English words).

- The deadline for abstract submission is Thursday, November 9. Please see link for abstract registration. For more information, please go to our conference website:

A More Human Dwelling Place: Reimagining the Racialized Architecture of America (February 16, 2018 9:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/48424 48424-11233230@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 16, 2018 9:30am
Location: Hutchins Hall
Organized By: University of Michigan Law School

Presented by the Michigan Journal of Race & Law, "A More Human Dwelling Place: Reimagining the Racialized Architecture of America" is a symposium happening on February 16 and 17 at the University of Michigan Law School.

Over two days, we will examine five archetypal spaces in America: homes and neighborhoods, schools, courthouses, prisons, and borders. The symposium endeavors to consider the ways in which these spaces have become increasingly racialized, diagnose how that racialization impedes their basic functioning, and reimagine these spaces at their best, and our world as a more human dwelling place. James Baldwin gave us this name, embedded in his imperative “to illuminate that darkness, blaze roads through vast forests, so that we will not, in all our doing, lose sight of its purpose, which is, after all, to make the world a more human dwelling place.”

The symposium will bring together individuals working to better these spaces, hailing from many disciplines, including law, history, sociology, journalism, literature, architecture, urban planning, and visual art. Together, we hope to conceptualize forgotten or not yet dreamed of alternatives. Through discussions of projects already realized and ideas not yet concrete, we will collectively inch toward the world we wish to inhabit.

The symposium is free and open to the public. All are welcome.

This event is part of VegWeek, a series of talks on the health, environmental, and ethical benefit of a plant-based diet. This screening is in partnership with UM Sustainable Food Program's Movie Series, which highlights an array of sustainable food topics.

The event will be accompanied with catering from Jerusalem garden!

Forks Over Knives empowers people to live healthier lives by changing the way the world understands nutrition. As science has shown, chronic conditions like heart disease and type 2 diabetes can be prevented, halted, and often reversed by making one change that requires no prescription and is accessible to all: leaving animal-based and highly refined foods off the plate and adopting a whole-food, plant-based diet instead.

The documentary will be accompanied by a Q&A with Marc Ramirez, a former UM Football Player whose life was drastically changed after watching the film. Through the power of food, Marc reversed his type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, erectile dysfunction, psoriasis, frequent heartburn, and lost 70 pounds.

Educators from the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Virginia (CBNERR), and Virginia Institute of Marine Science’s (VIMS) Marine Advisory Program created the Virginia Scientists and Educators Alliance (VA SEA), a network of graduate students, teachers, and informal educators. The project addressed the significant need for teaching resources and professional development that assist teachers in better demonstrating to their students the research practices of scientists, and how they apply to critical thinking skills. Through this webinar, we will discuss how educators transferred scientific research into usable lesson plans and outreach activities. We will also discuss ways that environmental educators can mentor K-12 teachers in incorporating research-based lesson plans in the classroom on their own.

Sarah Nuss is Education Coordinator at Chesapeake Bay-Virginia National Estuarine Research Reserve. Chesapeake Bay-VA NERR is based out of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, College of William & Mary.

Are small coastal businesses thinking about disaster preparedness? (June 21, 2018 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/52554 52554-12850972@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, June 21, 2018 3:00pm

Coastal businesses, a powerful economic engine for Maine, are generally little prepared for storm surge and coastal flooding. Yet lessons learned from previous disasters underscore how important the recovery of businesses is to the overall recovery of a region’s economy.

The Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve collaborated with the Kennebunk-Kennebunkport-Arundel Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Kennebunkport through a NERRS Science Collaborative grant, to help business owners assess their vulnerability to the impacts of a natural disaster using the Tourism Resilience Index. The Index was developed by Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant and adapted for New England. Best practices identified by businesses and lessons-learned from the project will be shared.

How to Talk Sustainability (July 10, 2018 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/52456 52456-12783518@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, July 10, 2018 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Graham Sustainability Institute

Talking about sustainability can be difficult. Join PBA staff on July 10th to discuss the short book: Sustainability is for Everyone by Alan AtKisson (https://sforeveryone.wordpress.com/). Bring your lunch as well as anecdotes about your own experiences in talking about sustainability with others. This workshop should make the conversations you have at family gatherings, in the breakroom, and at the grocery store more effective and less stressful.
