Pricing carbon is viewed by economists left, right and center as the simplest and most effective way to reduce carbon emissions. Momentum is growing: Carbon fee and dividend (CFD) and cap and trade policies are currently used, or are planned, in many parts of the world. How do they work? How might they affect the poor, and our economy in general? This panel will explore the challenges and opportunities of market-driven strategies to address the climate crisis.
Moderator: Dr. Knute Nadelhoffer (University of Michigan)
Panelists: Dr. Barry Rabe (University of Michigan), Dr. Sam Stolper (University of Michigan), Dr. Lisa Del Buono (Citizens' Climate Lobby)

This event is co-sponsored by the City of Ann Arbor, Ann Arbor League of Women Voters, the Ann Arbor District Library, the UM School of Environment and Sustainability, UM Energy Institute and the Ann Arbor Chapter of Citizens' Climate Lobby.

On behalf of the MUSE Organizing Committee*, you are cordially invited to participate in the 2018 Michigan University-wide Sustainability and Environment (MUSE) Conference.

- The annual flagship event of the MUSE Initiative, the MUSE Conference provides a unique venue for sharing research, building new connections, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among all members of the University of Michigan community engaged in the broad range of sustainability and environment-related research. We welcome the involvement of U-M graduate students, as well as University leadership, faculty, and research fellows from all disciplines, including those in arts, humanities, engineering, and natural and social sciences. The 2018 MUSE Conference will consist of interdisciplinary lectures by speakers including Susan Scotti Parrish, author of The Flood Year 1927: A Cultural History, and Claire Vaye Watkins, author of Gold Fame Citrus, as well as panel discussions, a poster session, network-and skill-building workshops, and a public keynote address and reception at Zingerman’s Greyline event space.

- Participants will have opportunities to present both preliminary and final research findings. Thematic facilitated workshops will engage participants at all career stages in structured collaboration and discussion about emerging developments and debates in cross-cutting research topics.

- Please consider participating in the 2018 MUSE Conference by submitting a short abstract. Abstracts on topics related to sustainability and environment may include (but are not limited to) human behavior, environmental history, policymaking and governance, corporate social and environmental responsibility, public health, built environment and infrastructure, land use, energy, water, climate, and ecosystems. Themed interdisciplinary sessions will be designed once abstracts have been reviewed by a selection committee. We encourage submissions to present either specific research outcomes or broader themes related to your research interests.

- Both oral and poster presentation opportunities are available. Short-form oral presentations may be used to share preliminary results or brief research summaries, while longer presentations allow for more depth. When submitting an abstract, you may also opt-in to facilitate a workshop discussion and/or be considered for a brief Up-goer 5-style presentation at the public reception (explaining your research using the “ten hundred” most-used English words).

- The deadline for abstract submission is Thursday, November 9. Please see link for abstract registration. For more information, please go to our conference website:

A More Human Dwelling Place: Reimagining the Racialized Architecture of America (February 16, 2018 9:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/48424 48424-11233230@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 16, 2018 9:30am
Location: Hutchins Hall
Organized By: University of Michigan Law School

Presented by the Michigan Journal of Race & Law, "A More Human Dwelling Place: Reimagining the Racialized Architecture of America" is a symposium happening on February 16 and 17 at the University of Michigan Law School.

Over two days, we will examine five archetypal spaces in America: homes and neighborhoods, schools, courthouses, prisons, and borders. The symposium endeavors to consider the ways in which these spaces have become increasingly racialized, diagnose how that racialization impedes their basic functioning, and reimagine these spaces at their best, and our world as a more human dwelling place. James Baldwin gave us this name, embedded in his imperative “to illuminate that darkness, blaze roads through vast forests, so that we will not, in all our doing, lose sight of its purpose, which is, after all, to make the world a more human dwelling place.”

The symposium will bring together individuals working to better these spaces, hailing from many disciplines, including law, history, sociology, journalism, literature, architecture, urban planning, and visual art. Together, we hope to conceptualize forgotten or not yet dreamed of alternatives. Through discussions of projects already realized and ideas not yet concrete, we will collectively inch toward the world we wish to inhabit.

The symposium is free and open to the public. All are welcome.

The event will be accompanied with catering from Jerusalem garden!

Forks Over Knives empowers people to live healthier lives by changing the way the world understands nutrition. As science has shown, chronic conditions like heart disease and type 2 diabetes can be prevented, halted, and often reversed by making one change that requires no prescription and is accessible to all: leaving animal-based and highly refined foods off the plate and adopting a whole-food, plant-based diet instead.

The documentary will be accompanied by a Q&A with Marc Ramirez, a former UM Football Player whose life was drastically changed after watching the film. Through the power of food, Marc reversed his type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, erectile dysfunction, psoriasis, frequent heartburn, and lost 70 pounds.

Educators from the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Virginia (CBNERR), and Virginia Institute of Marine Science’s (VIMS) Marine Advisory Program created the Virginia Scientists and Educators Alliance (VA SEA), a network of graduate students, teachers, and informal educators. The project addressed the significant need for teaching resources and professional development that assist teachers in better demonstrating to their students the research practices of scientists, and how they apply to critical thinking skills. Through this webinar, we will discuss how educators transferred scientific research into usable lesson plans and outreach activities. We will also discuss ways that environmental educators can mentor K-12 teachers in incorporating research-based lesson plans in the classroom on their own.

Sarah Nuss is Education Coordinator at Chesapeake Bay-Virginia National Estuarine Research Reserve. Chesapeake Bay-VA NERR is based out of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, College of William & Mary.

Are small coastal businesses thinking about disaster preparedness? (June 21, 2018 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/52554 52554-12850972@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, June 21, 2018 3:00pm

Coastal businesses, a powerful economic engine for Maine, are generally little prepared for storm surge and coastal flooding. Yet lessons learned from previous disasters underscore how important the recovery of businesses is to the overall recovery of a region’s economy.

The Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve collaborated with the Kennebunk-Kennebunkport-Arundel Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Kennebunkport through a NERRS Science Collaborative grant, to help business owners assess their vulnerability to the impacts of a natural disaster using the Tourism Resilience Index. The Index was developed by Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant and adapted for New England. Best practices identified by businesses and lessons-learned from the project will be shared.

This webinar will be led by Annie Cox, the Coastal Training Program Coordinator at Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve in Maine.

Evaluating coastal management vulnerability to climate change (July 17, 2018 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/53030 53030-13202726@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, July 17, 2018 3:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Graham Sustainability Institute

The National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) System created the Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment Tool for Coastal Habitats (CCVATCH) to help land managers, decision makers, and researchers develop conservation, management, and restoration plans for coastal habitats in light of climate change. Reserves in New England and North and South Carolina will share the results from recent assessments they conducted. The presentation will demonstrate how CCVATCH serves as an evaluation process to identify sources of vulnerability, provide a greater understanding of the potential impacts of climate change alone and in relation to existing non-climate stressors, and identify data gaps and research needs.

About the Speakers:
Robin Weber has been engaged in the development of the CCVATCH from its inception and served first as an Applied Science Investigator and then as Project Lead in two funded projects designed to pilot test and implement CCVATCH at multiple locations. As a Stewardship Coordinator within the NERRS for 18 years, Ms. Weber applies science to the management and restoration of a variety of habitat types on Reserve properties and works with partners to enhance stewardship of managed lands more broadly within the State of Rhode Island.

Dr. Plunket initially proposed the idea of developing a climate vulnerability assessment tool designed for coastal habitats in 2011. Since then she has led a workgroup that developed the CCVATCH, served as the principal investigator on a Science Collaborative funded project to pilot test the tool, and trained staff in the CCVATCH process at NERRA/NERRS meetings. As Stewardship Coordinator at the North Inlet-Winyah Bay NERR, Dr. Plunket works on a variety of projects directed toward the long-term conservation of the North Inlet and Winyah Bay estuaries.

SOLD OUT
Flint was already a troubled city in 2014 when the state of Michigan—in the name of austerity—shifted the source of its water supply from Lake Huron to the Flint River. Soon after, citizens began complaining about the water that flowed from their taps—but officials rebuffed them, insisting that the water was fine. Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, a pediatrician at the city’s public hospital, took state officials at their word and encouraged the parents and children in her care to continue drinking the water—after all, it was American tap water, blessed with the state’s seal of approval.

But a conversation at a cookout with an old friend, leaked documents from a rogue environmental inspector, and the activism of a concerned mother raised red flags about lead—a neurotoxin whose irreversible effects fall most heavily on children. Even as circumstantial evidence mounted and protests grew, Dr. Mona knew that the only thing that could stop the lead poisoning was undeniable proof—and that to get it, she’d have to enter the fight of her life.

What the Eyes Don’t See is the inspiring story of how Dr. Mona—accompanied by an idiosyncratic team of researchers, parents, friends, and community leaders—proved that Flint’s kids were exposed to lead and then fought her own government and a brutal backlash to expose that truth to the world. Paced like a scientific thriller, this book shows how misguided austerity policies, the withdrawal of democratic government, and callous bureaucratic indifference placed an entire city at risk. And at the center of the story is Dr. Mona herself—an immigrant, doctor, scientist, and mother whose family’s activist roots inspired her pursuit of justice.

Join Dr. Mona Hanna-Attish for a talk, Q&A, and book signing of What the Eyes Don't See.

Literati Bookstore will be on-hand to sell copies of the book.

Trend Analysis of SWMP Temperature with Missing Data (September 19, 2018 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/53031 53031-13202727@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, September 19, 2018 3:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Graham Sustainability Institute

The National Estuarine Research Reserves’ System-wide Monitoring Program (SWMP) data can contribute to research and discussion on climate change. The treatment of temperature data is of particular concern when applied to the analysis of interannual trends. Seasonal cycles can impose fluctuations that greatly exceed diurnal, tidal, or event-scale fluctuations, and seasonally skewed distribution of missing data biases calculations of annual or seasonal means.

This webinar will provide insights on encoded algorithms for measuring temperature trends, including the conservative approach of replacing missing temperature data with smoothed day-of-the-year averages and seasonal decomposition as well as the benefits and disadvantages of alternative approaches.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Thomas Grothues has a Research Faculty appointment as a fish ecologist at Rutgers University and begins as Research Coordinator for Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve System in Fall 2019. He has been using SWMP data in peer-reviewed publications about fish habitat use, migration, and recruitment since 2007.

What is Semester in Detroit?
Twice each year, Semester in Detroit brings a new student cohort to live, learn, work and engage in the city. Fall semester runs from September through December, and spring/summer semester runs from May through July. Applications for the spring and fall semesters are accepted on a rolling basis, but final deadlines are detailed on the Applying to SID page.

Through an intensive urban studies curriculum that explores 20th century Detroit history, urban planning, the non-profit sector, creative writing, and more, students learn about the city in a comprehensive way that isn’t available through single course offerings. As an experiential program, the classes are not the only way students learn of the city - yet they provide vital tools and insight to take with students through their own experiences in Detroit.

Want to learn more?
Please join us for our mass interest meeting on September 24 5-6PM in the East Quad Greene Lounge, if you want to learn more about the program❗❗❗We can talk to you about Scholarships, Housing, Application, and Credits!

About Sue Babenic: Sue Babinec is a Senior Advisor at the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) and is responsible for their energy storage portfolio–both transportation and grid. In the commercialization aspects of this role she prepares breakthrough energy technology teams for the transition from lab to market by coaching on patents, manufacturing process design/economics and partnerships with customers/funding groups. In her strategy role she helps to shape improved approaches, across a broad spectrum, towards maximizing positive impact of ARPA-E technologies on the US competitiveness.

Talk abstract:
The long awaited emergence of ES as an economically sound enabler of electrified trans- portation, often considered pure speculation, is now a reality. Li-Ion is satisfying the many criteria for ICE parity which was originally set by DOE. Its high volume manufacturing now gives rise to lower costs which ensures continued commoditization and widespread adoption, albeit not based on US as the market lead. Thus the formerly nascent industry is settling in to predictable mature behaviors. For the reimagined GRID of the future, cost effective wind and solar renewables coupled to the now cost effective Li-Ion storage are beginning to beat the usual approaches for electricity generation - without subsidies. In this presentation we will look at the evolution and some of the details of this pres- ent case, the remaining performance shortcomings, and how they might be met. Topics will include global manufacturing supply/demand trends, economics of scale, remaining technology gaps and technical challenges, including ARPA-E breakthrough approaches for both transportation and stationary. Our problem has transitioned from grappling to bring Li-Ion to the world to avoiding its total technology lock-in, which may ultimately thwart the next generation of progress.

The TE3 conference brings economic scholars together with government and industry practitioners to exchange ideas and strengthen collective knowledge for addressing transportation energy and environmental policy challenges.

What transportation energy and environmental policies will foster progress toward long-term climate protection goals given the volatility of energy markets and uncertainties in consumer behavior?

Relevant factors include technology cost and investment needs for vehicles, fuels and related infrastructure; changing demands for travel; social issues including changeable consumer behavior; new mobility services; car sharing; public transportation and other mode choice issues. The theme encompasses tensions between current low fuel prices and tightening fuel economy and GHG emissions standards, as well as longer-term issues around aligning infrastructure, fuel, and vehicle design and consumer education for a sustainable future.

Sponsored by the University of Michigan Energy Institute, this year’s conference will include three paper sessions on economic and policy research that address energy use in the transportation sector and its environmental implications. Last year’s conference featured an outstanding selection of papers covering fuel economy and emissions, technology incentives, alternative fuels, consumer adoption and behavior, impact of vehicle scrappage programs, and infrastructure. In addition, a policy panel with representatives from industry, government and academia will discuss how transportation policy can foster progress towards long term fuel economy and emissions goals in the face of fuel price volatility and greenhouse gas emissions standards.
