Announcement:

Dear Friends,

I am so sorry I won’t be able to get on a plane today and play these shows with my wonderful 3WATT friends Gretchen Peters and Mary Gauthier. Last night at 2 a.m. I rolled over and felt a stabbing pain in my upper right torso. Things went downhill from there into full blown shingles by dawn, the kind that never erupt on the surface but stay under your skin, causing agonizing nerve pain. Yikes!

The good news is the show will go on in grand style-I know Mary and Gretchen will kill it as they always do-two of my favorite songwriters and performers in the world, both of them Grammy nominated and at the top of their game. And if that ain’t enough Austin’s biggest buzz, singer-songwriter Jaimee Harris will be on board to play her heart out as well. Barry Walsh will also be joining Mary and Gretchen on piano at the Ark in Ann Arbor and at Chicago City Winery - making for one great night of music.

I’m sure you will enjoy this show, and please know I will be back around as soon as I am able.

Thank you!

Eliza Gilkyson

Eliza Gilkyson

Twice Grammy Nominated folksinger Eliza Gilkyson has just released her 20th album, Secularia, a collection of songs old and new that reflect her ongoing search for meaningful spirituality without the constraints of traditional religious belief systems, replacing dominant ideology with a more inclusive perspective that embraces compassion, self-awareness and respect for the natural world in a culture she feels is “wavering between collapse and reinvention”. Produced by her son, Cisco Ryder, (Nocturne Diaries, Roses at the End of Time, Red Horse), with a spare urban approach, the recording features songs of grief, gratitude and wonder, a call for accountability and a true moral compass for these divisive times.

“Secularia is a series of poems and hymns, deeply spiritual songs that praise the wonder and beauty of the world, that lament its destruction, and that celebrate the joy of the mystery that lies behind its wild wonder.”

Gretchen Peters

For two decades, Gretchen Peters has been one of Nashville's most beloved and respected artists. Inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in October 2014 by singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell, who called her "a songwriter and a poet (who) sings as beautifully as she writes” Peters has accumulated accolades as a songwriter for artists as diverse as Etta James, Bonnie Raitt, The Neville Brothers, Patty Loveless, George Strait, Bryan Adams and Faith Hill. In 2015, The Telegraph (UK) named her one of the greatest 60 female singer-songwriters of all time.

“…songs that manage, with deft use of language, to cram a whole epic into three minutes. Astonishingly good writing.” – Pop Matters

***

“With songwriting as powerful as hers, there’s no need to go looking for qualifiers. She’s a unique, intrinsically valuable musical voice. And there’s never a surplus of those.”
— Randy Lewis, Los Angeles Time

The Associated Press named Mary Gauthier as one of the best songwriters of her generation. Her songs have been recorded by dozens of artists, including Jimmy Buffett, Blake Shelton, Tim McGraw, Bettye Lavette Mike Farris, Kathy Mattea, Bobby Bare, Amy Helm and Candi Staton, and have appeared extensively in Film and Television, most recently on Yellowstone. Her album, Filth and Fire (2002) was named Best Independent CD of the year by the New York Times, and Mary was signed to Universal Lost Highway. Her following 5 records were listed in both the LA Times and NY Times top three releases of the year. She was awarded New Artist of the year by The Americana Music Association in 2005, and her record Mercy Now was named in the top 5 records of the decade by No Depression magazine. Her most recent release, Rifles & Rosary Beads ( a collection of sons co-written with wounded veterans) was nominated for 2018’s record of the year by the Americana Music Association as well she was nominated for a Grammy in 2018 for Best Folk Recording category.

Full of energy and surprise, wit and subtlety, Twisted Pine has quickly become one of the most acclaimed young string bands in the Northeast. Audiences across the U.S. and beyond have been drawn to their forthright songwriting, lush harmonies, and musical daring. In its early days, Twisted Pine hewed close to its bluegrass origins, but over time the quartet has developed a unique, infectious style without limits. Moving beyond the standard verse-chorus-solo structure of traditional string bands, Twisted Pine is a multilayered ensemble that brings the enveloping sound and pop hooks of indie music to an acoustic instrumental setting. They come to Michigan with a new album, "Dreams."

Mountain Heart offers bluegrass and more. This band as been fearlessly revolutionizing the way acoustic music can be presented and played. The band's name has been synonymous with cutting-edge excellence in bluegrass circles since the group's creation. Widely known throughout the music industry for continually redefining the boundaries of acoustic music, the band has gained legions of loyal fans as a result of both their superlative musicianship and their incendiary live performances. Mountain Heart's music always fell just barely under the bluegrass umbrella, and now, from large outdoor folk music, Americana, jam band, and bluegrass festivals, to sold-out shows opening for Southern rock icons like The Marshall Tucker Band, The Tedeschi Trucks Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mountain Heart has been making an undeniable connection with wider audiences. Whenever they come to The Ark, they tear the house down—and at last year'sAnn Arbor Folk Festival, they just had a bigger house to tear down.

Laurel Premo and Michael Beauchamp of Red Tail Ring create lush, intricate arrangements of original folk music and traditional ballads with banjo, fiddle, guitar, and close harmonies. American Roots UK hails them as "the very best of the 21st century’s minimalist and highly original folk music ... a peerless duo." Their latest, "Fall Away Blues," features new songwriting fused with old-time and country blues themes, tackling topical subjects such as gun violence and environmentalism as well as age-old questions of place and love. Red Tail Ring "doesn’t just pay homage to vintage folk and roots music: The Kalamazoo duo breathes new life into it, channeling the power and charm of seminal material into its own original songs," says west Michigan critic John Sinkevics.

Shari Kane and Dave Steele first met in the summer of 1991, crossing paths as performing blues musicians: Shari was the partner of harmonica legend, Madcat Ruth (Madcat & Kane), while Dave was leading the electric blues band Big Dave and the Ultrasonics. Friends, neighbors, fellow musicians and fans have asked over the years, "When are you two going to start playing together?" The truth is, they've been playing together since their first date. In many ways their playing has developed side by side, listening to and learning from great acoustic blues guitarists from the past. As an acoustic blues duo, Shari and Dave throw a four-handed guitar party of original and time-honored blues, gospel, swing and ragtime. Steeped in Dave’s smoky vocals, percussive rhythm, and innovative lead lines, and Shari’s crisp picking style, rootsy leads, and stinging slidework, their music has been described as "street swing and stomp blues"—like a testament to sounds once heard on the streets of Harlem, the juke joints of Mississippi, or from the jug bands of Memphis

Originally hailing from a small Wisconsin town made world famous by a pair of overalls (Oshkosh, B'Gosh), the now Milwaukee-based folk band have cultivated a sensibility beyond their years due in part to the powerful literary force that is frontwoman and songwriter Vos. Raised on Bible hymns by her preacher father, she has a backstory that sounds more like that of an old bluesman from the Mississippi Delta than that of a young folk singer from Wisconsin. Despite their youth, Dead Horses have crafted a timeless sound, informed as much by modern Americana as it is by traditional roots music. They've worked with producer Ken Coomer (Wilco, Uncle Tupelo) who later invited the band to his studio to record the album, "Cartoon Moon." No Depression called their current album, "My Mother the Moon," one of the best of 2018 so far.

The Brother Brothers, twins, are Brooklyn's Adam and Davis Moss. They offer rich harmonies and thoughtful songs accompanied by guitar, cello, violin, and banjo in a coherent way that only musicians from the same family can achieve. Already established players and composers in a wide spectrum of genres around New York and beyond, they finally teamed up to bring their individual experiences together. Among their fans is Sarah Jarosz, who raves: "They approach their poignant and often charming songs with an almost startling sense of ease, and the tight harmonies are enough to send shivers down anyone’s spine. Their ability to pull the listener into their quietly energetic musical journey is a joy to behold." The Brother Brothers come to Michigan with their brand new debut album, "Some People I Know.

"I got a word machine in my head. It's a damn noisy contraption. Constantly running. No 'off' switch," says Ellis Paul. After growing up on a potato farm in northern Maine, Ellis started writing songs while he was attending Boston College on a track scholarship and was laid up for several months with an injury. He's often called the quintessential New England songwriter, and he's got more than a dozen of Boston Music Awards to prove it. Ellis's passionate, literate character sketches, delivered in a soaring, lyrical voice, have influenced a generation of folk songwriters toward the shamelessly poetic. The Boston Globe calls Ellis "literate, provocative, urbanely romantic." Whatever you call him, he's one of the major songwriters of our time. Says Absolute Punk, which you might not think would be reviewing Ellis's albums: "Everyone can relate to Ellis Paul and his songs, and for that reason he continues to be a national treasure."

From their start at an open mic at the Ark in the summer of 1974, this award-winning duo consisting of David Tamulevich and Michael Hough has become a perennial favorite, not only here in southeastern Michigan but all over the folk singer-songwriter circuit. Their songwriting and recordings have received consistently high praise, and their live performances even more so. Their songs are touching, humorous, insightful, and intelligent, and their music is always revealing something new‑lately they've become a key presence in the consistently high-quality local songwriting collective the Yellow Room Gang. Mustard's Retreat recently celebrated their 40th anniversary as a duo, and they're still creating "music to cure what ails you" anew!

Hailed by the Washington Post as “one of Nashville’s finest song interpreters,” Kathy Mattea has enjoyed the kind of success many artists only dream of: two Grammy wins, four CMA Awards, four #1 country singles, and five gold albums (plus a platinum collection of her greatest hits). The dream almost ended, though, when Mattea entered her 50s and began to find her voice changing. What followed was a three-year journey through life challenges, soul-searching, and professional uncertainty, a trying time of personal anguish that threatened to silence her permanently, but instead brought her unexpected joy. Mattea dug in with a vocal coach, re-committed to her music, and emerged with the most poignant album of her career, "Pretty Bird." Working with her old friend, music roots wizard Tim O’Brien, producing, she created a chronicle of her journey, song by song, back to singing for the sheer joy of it. From a playful take on Oliver Wood’s “Chocolate On My Tongue” to a tender rendition of Mary Gauthier’s “Mercy Now,” from a British traditional song to a Bobbie Gentry classic, these are the songs that helped Kathy Mattea reclaim her voice, and she inhabits each as fully as if it were her own.

Mandolin Orange’s music radiates a mysterious warmth —their songs feel like whispered secrets, one hand cupped to your ear. Ashleigh Phillips of Independent Weekly wrote that they craft "simple songs that go beyond chord progressions and vocal harmonies, leading somehow toward something pure. Using acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin and a hand-me-down fiddle, Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz allure with a heartworn sensibility." This North Carolina duo has shared stages with Rosanne Cash, Chatham County Line, the Steep Canyon Rangers and Abigail Washburn. Their original songs are drenched in a mastery of classic country, blues, and rock, but they are both personal and contemporary. It takes genius to be simple, and this young duo has that kind of genius. They come to Michigan with a new release, "Tides of a Teardrop," which they call their most personal effort. Always simple and quiet, the songs of Mandolin Orange are music to treasure.

They call her Long Tall Marcia Ball, and she's one of a kind! Marcia Ball grew up in Vinton, Louisiana, in the heart of an area overflowing with blues, zydeco, and swamp rock. All the female members of her family played the piano. In 1970 Marcia and her first husband were heading for San Francisco, but their car broke down in Austin, and that's where she stayed. She put together a trio of talents: piano playing, songwriting, and vocals. In 1983 Marcia released her first solo album, "Soulful Dress," and ever since then she's been letting the good times roll at The Ark and other clubs around the country where a corps of devoted fans has watched her evolved into a true legend of the piano blues. Marcia has won nine Blues Music Awards, and she was recently inducted into the Gulf Coast Music Hall of Fame. Come check out music from Marcia's fabulous recent album "Shine Bright"!

After a dozen acclaimed albums, virtuoso slide guitarist and bandleader Sonny Landreth has released "Recorded Live in Lafayette," capturing the one-of-a-kind live Sonny experience. Sonny Landreth has collaborated with the very top names in guitar over the years: Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Eric Johnson, Derek Trucks—the list goes on. The noted slideman cut his musical teeth in The Red Hot Louisiana Band of zydeco king Clifton Chenier, and he has since recorded and toured with artists ranging from John Mayall to John Hiatt. "Recorded Live in Lafayette" adds another major chapter to his tale, as new vocal and instrumental colors emerge

Ben Daniels is the son of actor Jeff Daniels, but that's very much the beginning of a story, not the end. When Ben Daniels decided he was going to be a musician, it was more than a career choice. A natural poet, this young songwriter went to school on Bob Dylan, Robert Johnson, and Jack White, among others. His lyrics speak directly to a younger generation that hears, sees, and thinks about the very things he’s writing. From their opening song to the finale of their set, The Ben Daniels Band brings originality and musicianship to a sound that spans Americana, blues, jazz, and rock. What Ben inherited from his father is, perhaps, a feeling for what it takes to live life as an artist, to reach out and create not just songs but anthems with arrangements that pull people in. With seven CDs under their belts, The Ben Daniels Band has grown to be a formidable group that sounds pleasantly familiar, yet unforgettably unique

Jazzy Ash grew up with a mother from New Orleans and a father from Trinidad, and music infused her home life every day, from jazz to Caribbean rhythms to the lively children’s music which was playing all the time for the kids in her mother’s home day care. She often spent summers in New Orleans with her aunts and grandparents, enjoying the culture and music that permeated their West Bank neighborhood. Later on, after becoming mom to two sons, she earned a degree in early childhood development and embarked on her music education program, Leaping Lizards Music, and that evolved into a band, Jazzy Ash and The Leaping Lizards. They've had the pleasure of performing at Lincoln Center and Symphony Space in New York, Getty Center in California, World Cafe Live in Philadelphia, Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, and the Ann Arbor Summer Festival. Jazzy Ash's music has been featured by LA Times and NPR, and continues to top the children's music charts.

Sierra Hull first played the Grand Ole Opry stage at 11, invited by Alison Krauss, and she quickly became known as a bluegrass mandolin prodigy. She was celebrated, yet adrift. Stranded, even. What she felt at 22 was not what she felt at 12, and the music Sierra Hull was writing and playing at home was different from the music she was making on stages. "In some way, I was needing to run from the thing that everybody thought I was being," she says now, at 25. Now, after consulting with Krauss and with Béla Fleck (who says, "She plays the mandolin with a degree of refined elegance and freedom that few have achieved"), Alison Krauss, who has won more Grammy awards than any female artist in history, says of Sierra, "I think she’s endless. I don’t see any boundaries. Talent like hers is so rare, and I don’t think it stops." Pretty soon she's going to be acoustic music royalty

Ladysmith Black Mambazo recently celebrated more than 50 years of joyous and uplifting music. Within this music are the intricate rhythms and harmonies of their native South African musical traditions. The group borrows heavily from a traditional music called isicathamiya (is-cot-a-ME-Ya), which developed in the mines of South Africa, where black workers were taken by rail to work far away from their homes and their families. Assembled in the early 1960s in South Africa by Joseph Shabalala, then a young farm boy turned factory worker, the group took the name Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Ladysmith is the name of Joseph’s hometown, about three hours west of Durban and three hours east of Johannesburg; Black being a reference to the oxen, the strongest of all farm animals; and Mambazo being the Zulu word for chopping axe, a symbol of the group’s ability to "chop down" any singing rival who might challenge them. A radio broadcast in 1970 opened the door to their first record contract—the beginning of an ambitious discography that currently includes more than 50 recordings (including Paul Simon's "Graceland") and has earned three Grammy awards

The Celtic-influenced Michigan roots music of Detroit native Kitty Donohoe has been praised in Sing Out! for its "intelligent, literate songwriting infused with an inherent optimism." Over the years Kitty has opened for a variety of artists, from Doc Watson to David Bromberg, from Bruce Cockburn to Cheryl Wheeler—and in 2008 she and sideman David Mosher took the stage at an Obama rally just before Bruce Springsteen. Her song "There Are No Words," written on September 11, 2001, has been performed by numerous other songwriters and has taken on a life of its own. Rich Warren of WFMT radio in Chicago has included Kitty on his list of the 50 most significant songwriters in the last 50 years. Maybe you heard Jared Deck doing a wonderful set at the Ark stage during the 2018 Ann Arbor Art Fair—now he's back for a full evening of his remarkable music, with a new album in tow. Jared takes life one fight at a time. "The battle has always been internal, overcoming my own failures and working to improve," he says. Raised on the dusty plains of an Oklahoma family farm, Jared worked in the fields as well as the town grocery, owned by his parents. "In a community of 1,200 people, big dreams seem impossible. We're taught to manage expectations, put our nose down, and get to work." Later he worked in an oilfield and a factory. During the Great Recession he got by with a job as a pianist in a black church, where over the next six years, he received an unparalleled musical education. Now, with his self-titled debut album, Jared tells stories in an honest voice of midland America. His song "The American Dream" won first place in the annual Woody Guthrie Folk Festival Songwriting Competition, and he comes to Michigan with a brand new release, "Bully Pulpit."

This show is free at the door for Ark members at the Solo level and above.

One of the best live acts to come out of Ireland in recent years is the multi-awarded winning We Banjo 3. With a seven-time all-Ireland banjo champ, a four-time banjo champ, another member who is an all-Ireland champ on both fiddle and bodhran, and with a passionate lead vocalist like a young Springsteen adopted by the Chieftains (yes, they're a quartet, but there are three banjos), the result is unforgettable. On both sides of the Atlantic the word is out about this group! WB3 performed at the “Friends of Ireland” luncheon on Capitol Hill attended by House Speaker Paul Ryan, President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny, and has headlined virtually every major U.S .Celtic fest for several years in a row. With a strong bluegrass influence (they call their music "Celtgrass"), the band is rapidly gaining favor in the worlds of bluegrass and Americana as well, as evidenced by their invites to Merlefest, ROMP Fest, Sisters Folk Fest, Old Settlers Fest, Four Corners Fest, and more! They come to Michigan with a new release, "Haven."

Loudon Wainwright III, or LW3 for short, is a cherished icon of American folk music, a darkly witty and touchingly personal songwriter and storyteller. He started out in the folk clubs of New York and Boston before going on to a long career that's encompassed both music and acting. He has given birth to over 20 albums (as well as fathering some very successful musical offspring), written folk classics including "Dead Skunk" and "The Man Who Couldn't Cry," and created music for film and theater. Loudon comes to Michigan with a new compilation, "Years in the Making," which includes new music, and new songs for a film produced by Judd Apatow, "Surviving Twin."

A lot of people know Matt Nathanson for his 2007 hit "Come On Get Higher," but his career has only kept growing since then. The year 2018 saw two albums from Matt, a collection of Def Leppard covers and the all-original "Sings His Sad Heart." He comes to The Ark with acoustic arrangements of the songs "Sings His Sad Heart," and it's not so common to hear him in a club The Ark's size. It's all to the good, because Matt has a unique sense of humor on stage that can get lost in larger venues.

This show is sold out. Songwriter Blu Sanders opens

When the Earls of Leicester (leave out the same letters you'd leave out in "Worcester") formed in 2013, their mission was ambitious but exact: to preserve and promote the legacy of bluegrass legends Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, in hopes of reviving the duo’s music for longtime admirers and introducing a new generation to their genre-defining sound. Within a year of releasing their self-titled debut, the Nashville-based six-piece far surpassed their own expectations, winning a Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album and earning six awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association. They come to Michigan with a new live album that's further testimony to the pure joy and supreme musicianship that propel their every performance

It's hard to believe, because each show is fresh and new, but the RFD Boys have been delighting Michigan audiences since 1969 with their fabulous musicianship and sly, exquisitely timed between-song humor. They're legends of Michigan bluegrass, but they're more than that too. With an appearance on the cover of Bluegrass Unlimited, with songs recorded by the likes of the Country Gentlemen, and with performances alongside bluegrass greats like Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley, the RFD Boys are a part of America's bluegrass tradition. The RFD Boys one of southeastern Michigan's most durable musical ensembles, and their shows capture a deep slice of musical Ann Arbor. Their 50th-anniversary appearance at the Folk Festival was a special moment and introduced many listeners to Dan Roehrig, who joined the band on guitar, mandolin, and bass in mid-2018. If you missed the Folk Fest, come by and say hello. Dan grew up listening to Doc Watson, Clarence White, and Tony Rice, and you can hear it in both his singing and guitar playing.

o the cabaret

Founded in 1992 as a small chamber group devoted to a cappella singing, the Vocal Arts has solidified its reputation as one of the premier chamber ensembles in the region, performing several concerts each season. VAE performs with a core group of about 24 and presents a highly varied repertoire, from Josquin Desprez to William Bolcom and beyond into popular song. Each year, The Vocal Arts Ensemble returns to The Ark for an annual cabaret-style show, We return to the Ark for our annual cabaret, this time featuring numbers about numbers—songs that mention numerals. A great mix of standards, less familiar gems and fresh arrangements—as well as food and good cheer— make this a not-to-be-missed event.

Rodney Crowell is one of country music's most successful songwriters, but the deadly seriousness in his music was always there for those with ears to hear. "Dad drove a stock car to an early death/All I remember was a drunk man's breath," sang Waylon Jennings as he took Crowell's "Ain't Living Long Like This" to the top of the charts. Since the turn of the millennium, Crowell has been on a roll, releasing personal, ambitious albums to wide critical acclaim. With his autobiographical masterpiece "The Houston Kid," he took an unflinching look at his own down-and-out upbringing, and he comes to The Ark with a new album, "Close Ties," that flows from the same sources and has been nominated for an Americana Music Association Album of the Year award.

Over the last decade, Pokey LaFarge has won the hearts of music lovers across the globe with his creative mix of early jazz, string ragtime, country blues and western swing, all while writing songs that ring true n both spirit and sound. His music transcends the confines of genre, continually challenging the notion that tradition-bearers fail to push musical boundaries. Cleverly striding among numerous forms of traditional American music, Pokey has crafted a genre all his own, marked by its accessible ingenuity. Rather than merely conjuring up half-forgotten imagery of days past, Pokey is a lyrical storyteller, the plot delivered smoothly through his dynamic vocals. One moment he shouts a line and the next he croons above his archtop guitar. He transmits a rare distillation of old American sounds! Based in St. Louis, Missouri, Pokey honors the musical traditions of that town without aping them. He's an Ark favorite, heard most recently at the 2019 Ann Arbor Folk Festival.

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Sept. 10, 2018 – Acoustic Routes Concerts announced today that country music legend, five-time Grammy® winner and Grand Ole Opry member Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives will take the stage at The Ark – Ann Arbor’s world-renowned folk music club – on March 16, 2019 to raise money to feed the hungry.

The concert is the 10th annual benefit at The Ark for the Breakfast at St. Andrew’s in Ann Arbor, which is hosted by St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Every day since the fall of 1982, volunteers have gathered there to serve a free meal to anyone in need, sometimes as many as 165 each day. Many guests are homeless. Others are working but struggling to make ends meet. Everyone is welcome. All concert profits will be used to purchase, food supplies and offset expenses, such as cleaning, heating and maintenance.

Rolling Stone magazine calls Marty Stuart one of the top country music artists of all time: “A musician’s musician, Stuart logged more than a decade as a sideman for the titans of twang – including Johnny Cash, Doc Watson and Lester Flatt – before launching his solo career...building his fanbase not only on the strength of his voice, but his hotshot guitar playing, too.”

NPR praised his latest album “Way Out West,” calling it a “journey through the Joshua trees, shadowy canyons and desert drams that tantalize travelers with the promise of a golden shore on the other side.”

Opening for Marty Stuart is Bloodshot Records artist Luke Winslow-King. A Cadillac, Mich., native steeped in the musical cauldron of New Orleans, Winslow-King is adept at mixing country, blues, R&B, rock ‘n’ roll and folk intuitively and masterfully. He shapes a mood from many sources and shepherds it to a unifying place of acceptance and hope.

The emcee for the evening is Lisa Tucker-Gray, the rector of Toledo’s Trinity Episcopal Church, an accomplished singer and the daughter of the Rev. Svea Gray, who was director of the Breakfast Program for more than 30 years. She will also perform with multi-instrumentalist Curt Waugh

Acoustic Routes Concerts has produced nine benefit concerts for the Breakfast Program at The Ark since 2010, with cumulative profits closing in on $100,000.

“The Breakfast started as way to help people get through a deep recession more than 30 years ago, but the need never went away,” said Jim Cain of Saline, founder of Acoustic Routes Concerts. “It’s staggering how many people don’t have enough to eat day in and day out.”

Ann Arbor-based food rescue agency Food Gatherers said hunger is a pervasive problem in Washtenaw County. More than one in seven people lack access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life.

“Some of the Breakfast volunteers have been there since the program’s earliest days. For others, it’s their first community service experience,” Cain added. “Volunteering creates a unique bond and I can’t thank Marty, Luke, Lisa and our sponsors enough for supporting our work.”

The Rough & Tumble are as easy to detect as a stray dog on your doorstep—and as difficult to send home. The dumpster-folk, thriftstore-Americana duo, consisting of Mallory Graham and Scott Tyler, have been circulating around the country in their 16’ camper since 2015. They picked up a couple of actual strays along the way—two 100-lb. dogs, Puddle & Magpie Mae—and have been making themselves at home in living rooms, bars, theaters, and festivals across the country. The Rough & Tumble are collectors ... a new kind of collector: songwriting with illustration, and arranging each song with a menagerie of instruments, ranging from acoustic guitars to mailbox snares to a banjulele.

The Lucky Nows play dynamic, high-energy Americana folk-rock with echoes of Isbell and Isakov and a bluesy center. Their music draws from every genre, delivering a wide range of lyric-driven originals with intricate arrangements and gorgeous harmonies. If Steve Earle had a love-child with Lucinda Williams, and that child was raised by Kris Delmhorst and Jeffrey Foucault, and frequently visited by Shovels & Rope and the ghost of Townes Van Zandt, their debut CD would sound eerily similar to The Lucky Nows' "Rise." The Lucky Nows feature Detroiter Jen Cass on vocals.

Molly Tuttle, says Paul Zollo of American Songwriter, "sings with the gentle authority of Gillian Welch, yet plays astoundingly fleet flat-picking guitar like Chet Atkins on superdrive." The first woman ever to win the International Bluegrass Music Association's Guitar Player of the Year award, Molly has been the talk of bluegrass circles of the past year and is rapidly gaining fans from all the spheres of the roots music universe as well. On her debut solo EP Rise, Molly reveals the rich new ground she’s discovered. Produced by Kai Welch (Abigail Washburn, Bobby Bare, Jr., the Greencards), the seven-song collection relies on a rock-solid bluegrass foundation as Molly breaks free without breaking ties, singing and exploring what her six-string acoustic guitar can do. A rising star if there ever was one!

A father of four and married to his high school sweetheart, Kellogg and his everyman story inspired a documentary called "Last Man Standing," which went on to become an Amazon exclusive film. In recent years, Kellogg has added authorship and speaking to his resume as well. He delivered a TEDx Talk on job satisfaction, the key note speech for the prestigious photography summit WRKSHP, and was invited to speak to the students at Columbine High School in Littleton, CO on the topics of social justice and 'finding your voice.’ He has appeared as a contributing author in several publications and in 2019, Wetware Media will be publishing his first full length book entitled “Objects in the Mirror: A Storyteller’s Take On What Matters Most.” He comes to Michigan with a new album, also called "Objects in the Mirror."

Lifelong friends and Northern Michigan natives, the Michigan Rattlers play "heavy-hearted folk-rock with an aching dose of Midwestern nice." Graham Young (guitar), Adam Reed (upright bass), and Christian Wilder (piano) began writing music and performing together in their Petoskey high school. "Petoskey is a small place. Beautiful, but secluded. It’s hard to start a musical career in a place where there are more deer than people," they say. Still, they regularly played every bar, cafe, and stage in town, developing a musical chemistry informed by the likes of AC/DC, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Seger, and more. Their debut EP, recorded in Los Angeles, attracted glowing reviews from No Depression, Bluegrass Situation, B3 Science, and Rolling Stone, who compared them to "Whiskeytown-era Ryan Adams, early Wilco, the acoustic side of Rhett Miller, and the Old 97s." Local audiences got a taste of Michigan Rattlers on the Friday night Ann Arbor Folk Festival bill, and we're betting you'll be back for their full sho

Gemini is the much-loved duo of Sandor and Laszlo Slomovits. They've been performing since 1973 and are now playing music for the third—or is it fourth?—generation of young fans and families. They write and perform acoustic music for children and families, celebrating with their audiences the warmth, fun, and joy of family life. A Gemini concert is a kinetic event, filled with rousing singalongs, hand motion tunes, folk tales, and music from around the world. "If the Pied Piper had been twins, chances are he would have been Gemini," says the Detroit News. Since 1979 San and Laz have released numerous recordings for adults and children and families. These recordings have won a number of awards including ones from Parents' Choice Magazine, the American Library Association, the National Parenting Publications (NAPPA), and the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts.

Channing & Quinn are an indie folk duo who craft music that blends quirky with creepy, and theatrics with sincerity. In a live setting the two do the work of several musicians by playing guitar, ukulele, accordion, drums, glockenspiel, banjo, looping vocals and even tap dancing all at the same time! (OK, some at the same time.) Their past tours have included one traveling entirely by Amtrak Trains, and most recently a seven-month-long national tour pulling and living in an Airstream trailer. They are currently based in Grand Rapids after spending nine years in Nashville. Channing & Quinn have opened for Brian Vander Ark, Langhorne Slim, and Enter The Haggis. They have released four full-length albums, including one since we last heard their full show in Ann Arbor. You can also hear their music in film and television, adding to the soundtrack of “More Than Me” starring former SNL cast member Jim Bruer, “3rd Street Blackout” with Ed Weeks and Janeane Garofalo, and more. Skerryvore first formed on the tiny lsle of Tiree off Scotland’s west coast in 2005. Back then, the band consisted of Tiree-born brothers Daniel Gillespie (accordion) and Martin Gillespie (bagpipes, whistles & accordion) who bonded with holidaymaker Fraser West (drums & vocals) and friend Alec Dalglish (lead vocals & guitar) over a shared love of music: everything from traditional to rock and jazz. It was this mix of musical styles and sounds that set the path for the band’s 2005 debut album, "West Coast Life." The more the fledgling band experimented with fusing together this mix of musical styles, the more their signature sound evolved, with many high-energy rock elements. The group expanded to a sextet and then to an octet, and the release of their self-titled third album saw them catapulted into the musical limelight, winning a string of prestigious awards and critical acclaim. Since then they've toured the globe, appeared in TV commercials promoting Scotland, and unveiled their own tartan. They come to Michigan with a new release, their sixth

A haggis is a tasty Scottish dish consisting of sheep heart, liver, and lungs, mixed with oatmeal, onion, suet, and spices, and then boiled inside the sheep's stomach. The Canadian-Scots band Enter the Haggis (bagpiper Craig Downie is from Scotland) has just about as much variety in their style, a high-speed collision of Celtic music, rock, bluegrass, funk, and world music. An Enter the Haggis live show is a musical feast—dynamic and emotionally uplifting. Alternating between upbeat rock numbers with sing-along choruses and slower, more introspective alt pop songs, the band plays progressive and lyrically driven music that’s strongly rooted in Celtic tradition—from the storytelling to the bagpipes. Enter the Haggis returns to The Ark with an as-yet-untitled new release!

Before there were terms like "roots rock," there were the Subdudes and their acoustic accordion-flavored (and tambourine-spiked) musical brew that came straight out of the warmth and soul of their native New Orleans. The band came together at the famed Tipitina's club in 1987 and took their awesomely funky blues-rock on the road for ten years, winning fans everywhere. The Subdudes, noted the All Music Guide's Tammy La Gorce, "aren't just stellar musicians of the swampy jazz-rock-blues New Orleans persuasion, as they've come to be known. They're also a group of guys whose working-class roots run as definitively, and maybe as deeply, as Bruce Springsteen's." The Subdudes sound has persisted through several changes of personnel, and now they're back, with Steve Amedée on tambourine, making a joyful noise in the world's funkiest city and beyond

His album "Streets Of New York" was hailed as "a platter for the ages" by Uncut. Bono, Lou Reed, Lucinda Williams, and Jim Jarmusch are among those who have sung his praises. Willie Nile's live performances, like his recent razor's-edge set at the 2014 Ann Arbor Folk Festival, are legendary. He has toured across the U.S. opening for The Who at the personal request of the band and sung with Bruce Springsteen at Giants Stadium. Willie was born in Buffalo, New York, sings, plays guitar and piano, lives in New York City, and has outstanding parking tickets in many states. He comes to Michigan with a new release, "Children of Paradise."

To call Peter Mulvey an acoustic singer-songwriter and guitarist just doesn't cover it. He's equally—and tremendously on all counts—gifted as a singer, writer, and guitarist. Says the Irish Examiner: "Peter Mulvey is one of the most accomplished guitarists you're ever likely to hear … utterly original … it is nigh on impossible to explain him to the uninitiated … his intelligent and sometimes complex songs engage both hemispheres of the listener's brain." Peter grew up in Milwaukee, made his debut on the streets of Dublin, and moved to Boston, performing in subways and finally clubs. His latest album was produced by Ani DiFranco, whom he befriended when she added a verse to his song "Take Down Your Flag," about the shootings at the AME Emanuel Church in Charleston, South Carolina. "I heard a young folksinger at a festival last summer sing a line about how our job is to sing the people through, and I think that young man is right as rain," Peter says. "I’m doing my best." Peter returns from his MC slot at the 2019 Ann Arbor Folk Festival with a new album "Fool's Errand".

JigJam is a multi-award winning quartet from the heart of the midlands in Ireland. Blending the best of traditional Irish music with Bluegrass and Americana in a new genre which has been branded as 'I-Grass' (Irish-influenced Bluegrass), their onstage energy along with their virtuosic musical ability has captivated audiences throughout the world. Says "Here's an Irish band that's going to impact the world as hard as Clancy Brothers or U2 if they get only half a chance." Jamie McKeogh, Cathal Guinan and Daithi Melia all hail from Tullamore, County Offaly with County Tipperary–born Gavin Strappe completing the quartet. All four members grew up immersed in Irish traditional music and culture, and the band has collectively achieved over twenty All-Ireland titles at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann competitions. They have now developed their own unique style of music influenced by American folk music whilst staying true to their Irish roots. They've recorded two albums and are coming to Michigan with one more.

Andrew Brown's Djangophonique is a musical project that performs Jazz Manouche and Hot Swing inspired by the legendary gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and his Quintette du Hot Club de France.    Born in a sandstone victorian farmhouse that has been in his family since it was built four generations ago, Andrew Brown is the son of a Motown session musician and grew up listening to the sounds of his dad’s piano as he steeped in musical influences from Duke Ellington to Stevie Wonder. As a young man returning from a trip to New Orleans with a newfound interest in swing he co-founded the eclectic americana group Appleseed Collective, with whom he has toured 150+ dates a year. Traveling all over the continental United States, playing esteemed venues and festivals such as The Ark, Sisters Folk Festival, Wheatland, Cervantes Ballroom, Summercamp Music Festival, Schuba’s, and The Ann Arbor Folk Festival at Hill Auditorium, he cut his teeth as a guitarist, songwriter and band leader. Since slowing down his touring schedule in 2017 he began tirelessly studying and performing the music of his favorite guitar player: Django Reinhardt. Since then he has studied at various music camps with many of the genres heavy hitting players such as Angelo Debarre, Sebastian Gineaux, and Gonzalo Bergara, and was even invited to back up Denis Chang at one of his concerts. Andrew currently plays throughout Michigan with his own project Djangophonique, his band Appleseed Collective, and his friends projects Third Coast Gypsy Jazz, Smoking Dandies. He also teaches guitar, both generally and specifically in the style of Django.

Named among Yahoo Music’s “Top 10 Bands to Watch in 2017,” The Accidentals began their adventure in their hometown of Traverse City, MI, when Katie Larson, a sophomore cellist, and Savannah Buist, a junior violinist, were paired for a high school orchestra event. The gifted young musicians became fast friends and before long, bandmates. Dubbing themselves after the musical notes that fall outside of a key signature, they were joined in 2014 by percussionist Michael Dause, and since then national attention has increasingly come their way. Along the road, where they've performed more than 1,000 shows over the last five years, they been open to and influenced by a dizzying variety of musical genres, from classical music to hip-hop. Signed to the major Sony label in 2017, the band has released two albums, including the recent and politically aware "Heavy Flag." See them in the intimate confines of The Ark while you still can!

Jacob Jolliff was born into a musical family in Newberg, OR. His dad started him on the mandolin at age seven and required him to practice ten minutes a day. But after six months of practicing this minimal amount, something clicked, and almost overnight he started putting in several hours of intense practice daily. And this hasn't really changed in the last 20 years. He's played with Joy Kills Sorrow and Yonder Mountain String Band (which continues to tour), and now he's started his own Jacob Jolliff Band, featuring some of New England's most virtuosic young pickers. The group features a lot of Jacob's original instrumentals, as well as showcasing his singing, which has been a big part of what he does in recent years.

On Son Volt’s new record, "Union," present and past mingle into strong confluence. The 13 new songs written by founder Jay Farrar confront our turbulent politics and articulate the clarity and comfort music can offer in the tumult. “There are so many forces driving our country apart,” observes Jay. “What can we do to bring our society back together?” The country and blues sounds explored by Son Volt on its last two records (2013’s "Honky Tonk" and 2017’s "Notes of Blue") linger in the grooves of "Union." But the new record nods to many other mile markers along the band’s 25-year path. Some tunes offer a powerful return to the ringing lyrical clarity of 2005’s "Okemah" and "Melody of Riot,"and 2007’s "The Search." Others hearken back to the freewheeling poetic melodicism of 1994’s "Trace" and 1997’s "Straightaways." This is an album and a show that see one of Americana's great bands both looking back and continuing to drive forward.

Kentucky songwriter Ian Noe opens.

Sam Amidon is a singer and multi-instrumentalist originally hailing from Brattleboro, Vermont. He has released multiple albums of radically reimagined folksongs on the Bedroom Community and Nonesuch labels. Called "part preservationist, part visionary" by the Boston Globe, Sam offers reworkings of traditional American ballads, hymns and work songs, with the New York Times writing that he "transforms all of the songs, changing their colors and loading them with trapdoors." Along the way Sam has recorded or performed as a guest artists with musicians such as pianist Jason Moran, indie rock band Bon Iver, and Glen Hansard.

Flashpapr is a Michigan band, known (or faintly remembered) for playing broken folk music between 1996 and 2004. After a period of inactivity, Flashpapr now performs as a duo of its original members, Fred Thomas (Saturday Looks Good To Me) and Jacob Danziger (recordings with His Name Is Alive, Steve Roden, Cynthia Nelson, The Naysayer and Doveman). Along with Zach Wallace, Ben Bracken, and Ida Pearle, their three albums captured the sad and hopeful feeling of being alive, and their word-of-mouth live performances (in kitchens, living rooms, garages and back yards) were uncomfortably earnest attempts to invert the relationship between the band and audience. "You are my best friend, you are the most beautiful thing I keep inside my heart" was basically the idea.

House of Hamill features Brian Buchanan of Enter the Haggis and Rose Baldino of Burning Bridget Cleary.

Their music has been described as "Radiohead meets Riverdance"; Celtic-inspired, exciting, eclectic and unpredictable.

House of Hamill’s music occupies a space between traditional Irish music and sophisticated indie/pop.

Together, they write unusual, new fiddle tunes and exciting, unpredictable original songs while breathing new life into traditional and contemporary songs. Both are confident and unique lead vocalists, and the blend of their two voices in harmony is hypnotic and irresistible.

Whether House of Hamill is playing songs from their debut album "Wide Awake" (2016) or stomping through a set of original jigs and reels from their follow-up "March Through Storms" (2018), their chemistry onstage is always engaging and often hilarious. Spend an hour listening and you'll leave with tired feet, a huge smile, and a new appreciation for the versatility of folk instruments in a modern context.

Parsonsfield is a five-piece alt/folk band from Massachusetts that infuses a rowdy, rock 'n' roll spirit into its bluegrass and folk influences, blowing away any preconception of what you think banjos and mandolins should sound like. They weren't always called Parsonsfield—the band started out as Poor Old Shine. The new name was born of the inspired experiences recording two albums in beautiful, rural Parsonsfield, Maine. "We owe a lot to what happened there," they say. "It pulled us from being a more traditional string band to something that felt much more uniquely ourselves. It made us the band we are today." The joy is palpable when this band takes the stage, and NPR says they make "the most jubilant and danceable indie roots music this side of the Carolinas." Parsonsfield returns to The Ark from its debut at the 2019 Ann Arbor Folk Festival.

Wisconsin's Jeffrey Foucault writes sparse small-town ballads and love songs whose lyrics are great poems in themselves. "Townes Van Zandt, Greg Brown, and Kelly Joe Phelps fans should give Foucault a listen," says the Pasadena Weekly. The country rockers and dark blues songs of this Midwestern original are truly haunting things. Jeffrey has grown tremendously as a songwriter over the ten albums he has released, and by now he's gaining raves from the likes of supercritic Greil Marcus, who describes Jeffrey's music this way: "An acoustic guitar figure comes up against drums buried far away, like a memory. The story creeps out, and stops well short of its end, though you can glimpse it. Foucault drifts over the words so lightly that they seem to fade as they’re sung, and you might stop trying to hear them as words, let them come as sounds." Jeffrey comes to Michigan with a stunning new album, "Blood Brothers."

I'm a sucker for hard-edged vocals over pretty melodies and catchy grooves." Lee's second album, "Frames," made Guitar World's list of the top ten acoustic albums of 2013, and his original "Blackbird Song" has been one of the big viral hits of recent years. Lee's latest, "Paranoia," includes dark new songs and electronic elements. Brooklyn indie band Elizabeth and The Catapult opens

Huddled round a single vintage microphone, singing intimate duets with just mountain dulcimer, dobro and guitar,
Hannah Sanders & Ben Savage are an acoustic duo that sound classically timeless, yet their music is unique.
Since emerging in 2016, the duo have recorded two studio albums, Before the Sun (2016) and Awake (2018),
produced by award winning producer David Travers-Smith in Toronto, both of which gathered praise for the
crafting and skill of their musical writing and arranging.
The duo have toured the UK, North America and mainland Europe, enrapturing audiences at shows and on festival
stages with the sparkling beauty of their acoustic style.
They have shared stages and opened shows for Americana and folk luminaries such as Sarah Jarosz, Martin
Simpson, Seth Lakeman and Oh Susanna. Fleetingly, they may evoke a memory of Gram & Emmylou, Shirley
& Davey, or Gillian & David but their distilling of musical influences from both sides of the Atlantic produces a
refined sound that is decidedly their own.
Their unique unplugged presentation creates a widescreen, cinematic soundscape with open spaces and
atmosphere, giving their beautifully pure vocals room to share the songs’ emotion and narrative.
The material is as joyful and fun as it is intense, but the common factor is the duo’s warmth and confidence in each
other; their natural ease and connection is clearly evident on the recorded music, and a genuine pleasure to
witness on stage.

Chicago's Susan Werner is a triple threat at folk awards ceremonies with her luxuriously smooth and strong voice (she's a former opera singer), riveting lyrics, and haunting melodies. “When it comes to crafting a song, Ms. Werner’s only peers are Jimmy Webb and Paul Simon,” raves No Depression. Susan can do it all! She's a virtuoso on both piano and guitar, and her recordings have ranged from hardcore folk to Broadway music, humorous songs, a skeptical yet sympathetic take on gospel, songs of farming, and even classical arrangements of classic rock. Susan has a way of reinventing herself for each new project, but there's a core of humor sophistication, and musical craft that endures. She comes to Michigan with a new album, "NOLA: Susan Werner Goes to New Orleans," and, well, New Orleans may never be the same. Ann Arbor trombonist, Chris Smith, joins Susan for the show!

Sam Baker makes people happy. The characters in his songs face many challenges—alcoholism, car wrecks, racism, drug addiction, a mother’s abandonment—but they persevere. Much like Sam himself. In 1986 Sam got in the middle of someone else’s war. When a terrorist bomb exploded in the his train compartment, he went from being a young, healthy, tourist enjoying Peru with friends to a broken man surrounded by death and dying. Given his injuries, he too should have died. But through a series of miracles and coincidences he survived. With the top of his left hand gone, it seemed that his formerly skillful hands had been transformed into blocks of wood, but eventually those hands learned how to play an upside-down guitar. He needed to tell his story. Songs started to come from that upside-down guitar. Before he knew it, there were CDs, tours around the world, an interview with Terry Gross, and awards in Rolling Stone. A Sam Baker show is a celebration. Some songs tell of everyday people who survive life’s daily challenges; others are stories of growing up in a small Texas prairie town. All his shows are an acknowledgment and appreciation of the pure joy that comes with people gathering to listen to live music. Sam’s fans travel to see him, often driving hours to experience the powerful performance. After the show, they tell Sam their stories. At the end of the day, all go in peace.

Rose Cousins just might be Nova Scotia's answer to Iris DeMent, or even to Kate Wolf. Says Lifestyle Nova Scotia: "Cousins writes songs strong on story, melody, and honest observations ... that demand an unaffected but beautiful voice." Her album "We Have Made a Spark" took home a Canadian Juno Award along with many other awards, including a spot on NPR’s Top 10 Americana & Folk Albums list. That album was recorded in Boston, where Rose spends part of her time, and where she's found strong support from the city's vibrant songwriting community. Rooted in authenticity and conviction of voice, the songs of Rose Cousins make you feel as though she sings for you, about your life. "We develop patterns that keep us from moving forward," Rose says. "It takes a deep breath and a bucket of courage to face the uncomfortable, painful things we work so hard to avoid. Reward comes from recognizing the obstacle exists and pushing through fear."

Ever since their first meeting, over 20 years ago, Robert Jones and Matt Watroba have been musical partners. Their relationship started when they hosted back-to-back radio shows on WDET-FM, Detroit. Later on they started performing together and in doing so discovered a friendship based on mutual respect and a love for traditional American music. Now Matt and Robert literally travel the nation extolling the virtues of “Music That Matters." For Matt and Robert, American roots music (folk, blues, spirituals, work songs, chants, etc.) is music that matters. This is the music that America and the world have in common. It is music that reflects history, social change, migration, hopes and dreams. It is music that is rich and diverse, direct and powerful. Robert and Matt have performed this powerful program at hundreds of schools, festivals, coffeehouses, and conferences, to resounding acclaim, and now they've released a new joint album, "Common Chords."

The daughter of the famed Polish-Canadian mathematician Irving Kaplansky (who once wrote a song based on the first 14 digits of pi that his daughter has been known to perform), Lucy Kaplansky started out singing in Chicago bars. Then, barely out of high school, she took off for New York City. There she found a fertile community of songwriters and performers—Suzanne Vega, John Gorka, Bill Morrissey, Cliff Eberhardt, and others—where she fit right in. She's a singer-songwriter with an extraordinary feel for the range of human emotion. Lucy puts her own spin on contemporary songwriter folk with warm, powerful vocals and guitar playing that draws guitar gods (or geeks) to talk shop with her. Lucy Kaplansky, says the Boston Globe, "is becoming the troubadour laureate of modern city folk." She comes to Michigan with a new album on themes of nature, "Everyday Street."

Citing the likes of Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, and Dave Matthews among his influences, Howie Day used their music as a basis for his own original direction. Howie, like Patty Griffin, was a product of Bangor, Maine, who made a splash in Boston's coffeehouse scene. He released his first album, "Australia," in 2000. A lot has happened since then. Howie's music went in a rock direction, and he got the attention of industry heavyweight Chris Blackwell and was signed to the major Epic label. He got a gold record for his album "Stop the World Now," and he's been romantically linked to Britney Spears. What hasn't changed is that he writes songs imbued with a wide-eyed sense of boundless emotion, and clothes them in gorgeous arrangements that include innovative looping techniques. Howie's live shows are wonderful experiments in diverse song and instrumentation, and if you haven't experienced this unique artist yet, you're missing out! The Brian Jarvis Band opens.

In the words of USA Today: "Miles sings of stark, desolate loneliness, and the instruments accompanying her echo in the expanse of the solitude." And consider this testimony from The Ark's own former program direcdtor Dave Siglin: "I presented literally thousands of performers, including many wonderful singer-songwriters whose music I now cherish. Of all of these, I find myself listening to the music of Lynn Miles more than that of any other performer who played the club. Her melodies are stunning, and I think many of her lyrics are absolute poetry capable of standing alone. ... The point of my writing this is that I can easily say Lynn Miles ranks as my favorite singer-songwriter to have ever played The Ark during my tenure over the last forty years. Flat out my favorite." Lynn has been touring lately with a duo called The Lynnes, and it's been a while since we've heard her solo show. Not to be missed!

Al Stewart was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1945, and moved with his family to Bournemouth, a seaside town in the south of England, at an early age. A strong dose of Bob Dylan’s original songs shifted his focus from instrumentalist to lyricist and vocalist. In 1965, Al moved to London and became the emcee at the famed Les Cousins folk club, rubbing shoulders with young talents like Paul Simon, Ralph McTell, Bert Jansch, and Cat Stevens. After several albums written in autobiographical mode, Al shifted his lyrical gaze outward, into history, literature and current events, an approach debuted on 1973’s "Past, Present & Future." Al’s next album exploded in America: "Year of the Cat," released in 1976, spawned two Top 20 hits (the title song and "On the Border"), and itself became a million-selling record. After Al relocated to California, where he still resides, his next album, 1978’s "Time Passages," repeated the success of its predecessor, selling another million copies and spinning off the Top 10 title track and Top 30 single, "Song on the Radio." In the early 1990s, Al returned to his folk roots with "Famous Last Words," which utilized acoustic instrumentation and traditional folk and classical styles. He's never stopped creating completely original music—or being able to conjure other times and distant places with well-chosen words and evocative music.

Ypsilanti songwriter Adam Plomaritas draws on the words of John Coltrane to describe his own art: "My music is the spiritual expression of what I am – My faith, my knowledge, my being .. When you begin to see the possibilities of music, you desire to do something really good for people, to help humanity free itself from its hang-ups .. I want to speak to their souls." He writes about things that happen every day, his family, and the struggle to live a good life. "I tend to think of myself as a rational person, but music is a place where I can feel," he says. "Music can be—should be—emotional. The music I make is about what I love, what I hate, what I enjoy and what I fear. I think that the idea that heaven is a place full of music is a profound one. Music gives us an opportunity to both touch and be touched by something greater than ourselves." Songwriter Amy Petty opens with a mix of folk, pop, rock and blues ballads.

As a young man returning from a trip to New Orleans with a newfound interest in swing, he co-founded the eclectic Americana group Appleseed Collective, with whom he has toured 150+ dates a year. Traveling all over the continental United States, playing esteemed venues and festivals such as The Ark, Sisters Folk Festival, Wheatland, Cervantes Ballroom, Summercamp Music Festival, Schuba’s, and The Ann Arbor Folk Festival at Hill Auditorium, he cut his teeth as a guitarist, songwriter, and band leader. Since slowing down his touring schedule in 2017, he began tirelessly studying and performing the music of his favorite guitar player: Django Reinhardt. Since then he has studied at various music camps with many of the genres heavy-hitting players such as Angelo Debarre, Sebastian Gineaux, and Gonzalo Bergara, and was even invited to back up Denis Chang at one of his concerts.

Andrew currently plays throughout Michigan with his own project Djangophonique, his band Appleseed Collective, and his friends' projects Third Coast Gypsy Jazz and Smoking Dandies. He also teaches guitar, both generally and specifically in the style of Django.

One voice is all it takes. The right vocalist can make you fall in love at first listen, elicit tears, or bring you back to a different era altogether. A microphone and a stage remain the only necessities. That holds true for New York-based soul singer, songwriter, and Broadway actress Morgan James.

Part of Morgan’s creative trajectory has become centered around her full album cover projects. She covered D’Angelo’s “Black Messiah” one month after its release, Jeff Buckley’s “Grace” and a critically acclaimed full cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Blue”. She now takes on her most ambitious project to date: The Beatles “White” album, celebrating the 50th anniversary of its original release.

Her latest studio album, "Reckless Abandon", is her first as an independent artist, and it is her most personal outing yet, prompting the Huffington Post to call MJ the "Brightest Breakout Artist of the Year". Morgan assumed co-writing duties on all twelve tracks and sang all her own background vocals. The album is stocked with lush horns and harmonies, and stretches limbs between genres for a sound all its own. From the Rufus inspired soul swagger of the opening track "Up In Smoke", to the delicious R&B slow jam "You Thought Not", to the infectious soulful pop of "Unworthy", MJ takes the listener into her new era of freedom and empowerment.

On her full-length debut for Epic Records, “Hunter,” she cast an unbreakable spell with a powerhouse voice, theatrical swing, and a soulful poise. “Hunter” boasts a powerful and personal rendition of Prince’s “Call My Name” (reached Top 15 at Urban AC radio and #1 most added). Morgan assumed co-writing duties on eight of the collection’s eleven tracks and performed all of her own background vocals and harmonies. From the empowering farewell of “Fed Up On You” to the mournful rumination of “Say The Words”, or the soulful duet with Grammy Award winner Robert Glasper, "Let Me Keep You", she continually bares it all—both emotionally and musically.

In addition to her studio albums "Reckless Abandon" and "Hunter", Morgan has released a live tribute to her idol, Nina Simone, "Morgan James Live", as well as an EP featuring some of her fan's favorite covers, "YouTube Sessions". (She can also be heard on countless theatre and concept soundtracks). Morgan is proud to note that no vocal tuning of any kind has been used on any of her albums.

Morgan’s videos on YouTube have accumulated more than 150 million views (and climbing). With viral sensation Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox, Morgan toured the US, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. She is currently on the road touring with her band!

"Long before Alanis and Jewel," says Billboard, "there was a breed of singer/songwriters whose earthly anthems of soul-searching, heartache, and joy touched souls in a way few can muster today." Karla Bonoff was the best of that breed. This California singer-songwriter looked herself in the eye with each song she wrote, and her sad, knowing music was recorded by Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Aaron Neville, Wynonna Judd ("Tell Me Why"), and a host of others, and a younger generation of female songwriters was listening closely. "Her melodic sense, personal lyrics, and vocal stylings have found their way into the work of everyone from Shawn Colvin and Jonatha Brooke to Sarah McLachlan and Paula Cole," writes Catie Curtis. Today she writes just a few songs a year and makes them count. Karla comes to Michigan with a new release, "Carry Me Home," featuring new versions of classic songs as well as original material.

The Ryan Montbleau Band (June 11, 2019 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/63030 63030-15536924@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, June 11, 2019 8:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

In 2005, Ryan Montbleau and his band headed into Applehead Recording in Saugerties, New York, to cut their debut album. With nothing more than ambition and a relentless work ethic to their names, they bootstrapped the whole thing, maxing out credit cards to fund it themselves and launch their careers from the ground up. Twelve years, eleven records, thousands of shows, and 60 million Spotify streams later, Montbleau returned to the studio for a special one-night-only concert that would become the latest entry in his venerable catalog: ‘Woodstock Sessions.’

“There was something special about performing there again after going into that same studio as a young buck trying to figure out how to make my first records,” reflects Montbleau. “Coming back, I was a decade more confident, a decade stronger in my craft. It felt like coming full circle.”

For his performance that night, Montbleau was backed not by his usual touring band, but by the acclaimed Boston duo Tall Heights (cellist Paul Wright and guitarist Tim Harrington). The collaboration yielded fresh perspective on Montbleau’s catalog, fleshing out his stripped-down acoustic performances with gorgeous vocal blends and elegant instrumental arrangements. Soulful and spontaneous, the set showcased the magic that can happen when three consummate musicians surrender themselves to the songs, when a trio of gifted artists follow their instincts to craft a whole far greater than the sum of its parts.

“Tall Heights’ sound just naturally wraps around mine in a way that’s really unique,” says Montbleau. “Their harmonies and tones are so dialed in with each other, and their voices gel around mine perfectly. When we get together, something special tends to happen.”

Recorded in front of an intimate audience, the resulting collection combines the pristine audio quality of a studio record with the contagious energy of a live album, an ideal fit for Montbleau’s intimate, honest lyrics and spirited, dynamic delivery. The unusual setting pushed him to step outside his comfort zone and take bold artistic risks, assembling a setlist that was equal parts reimagined retrospective and trial-by-fire as he mixed stripped-down versions of songs from throughout his career with brand new tracks recorded for the first time that night. “Less is more” was the mantra, and while Montbleau may be best known for his barn-burning full-band shows, he’s no stranger to the raw acoustic setting.

“I’ve been touring solo about half the year lately, and my last release was a solo record where I really stripped the songs down to their bare bones,” says Montbleau. “I felt like those were some of the best songs I’ve written in my entire life, and this record is a perfect continuation of that. The music’s fleshed out a little bit more, but at its essence, it’s still me just pouring my heart out.”

Montbleau’s been pouring his heart out in song since the early 2000’s, when he first began performing around his native Massachusetts. He’d go on to collaborate with Martin Sexton, Trombone Shorty, and Galactic among others, and share bills and stages with artists as diverse as Tedeschi Trucks Band, Ani DiFranco, The Wood Brothers, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and Mavis Staples, but it was Montbleau’s ecstatic headline shows—often more than 200 of them a year—that solidified his reputation as a live powerhouse and an inexorable road warrior. NPR’s Mountain Stage compared his “eloquent, soulful songwriting” to Bill Withers and James Taylor, while Relix hailed his “poetic Americana,” and The Boston Herald raved that “he’s made a career of confident, danceable positivity.”

Montbleau’s never been one to rest on his laurels, though, and ‘Woodstock Sessions’ opens with a brand new song called “Looking Glass,” a gentle, pensive track that proves his lyrical prowess and melodic gifts are sharper now than ever before. “Busy people in the burning sand / Take a look up from your looking glass when you can,” he sings, his raspy voice ensconced in velvet harmony over top of intricate fingerpicking.

“That song was written just in time for the session and it was buzzing to get out,” explains Montbleau. “It's about the modern day-to-day, the ways we connect and the isolation we experience from staring at our screens all day and all night.”

The desire for connection, for a true human bond, is a recurring theme in Montbleau’s writing. The bittersweet “Our Own Place” searches for a home that’s perpetually just out of reach, while the brooding “Ships In The Night” ruminates on our polarized political climate, and the heartfelt “The Country and The Town” (a song commissioned by PBS in Montbleau’s newly-adopted home of Vermont) celebrates the power of community. Montbleau’s live shows are nothing if not communal affairs, and the confessional “Help Me” reaches out a helping hand out for anyone struggling through hard times.

“There’s still this shame tied up in mental illness or mental struggles,” says Montbleau. “So many people experience dark, even suicidal thoughts, and we need to talk about that more, collectively as a society and individually as friends and families. I wrote this song when I was going through those feelings myself, and I share it in the hopes that it can help other folks dealing with the same thing.”

Montbleau’s songs have a way of weaving themselves into the fabric of his listeners’ lives that way, offering up hope and light in moments of darkness and doubt. The tender “Carry” pledges to always be there to pick up a lover’s slack, while the striving “Chariot (I Know)” insists upon love and faith in the face of uncertainty, and the lilting “All Or Nothing” (which was originally recorded and released as a single with Tall Heights) promises better days to come. Selecting which ten tracks to include on the album from the nearly three-and-a-half-hour concert wasn’t easy—there’s no way to include every fan favorite—but Montbleau ultimately let the spirit of the songs guide him.

“I’m not trying to put out my greatest hits,” he concludes. “I’m just trying to create the best and most timely art I can.”

A lot may have changed since Ryan Montbleau first set foot in Applehead Recording, but some things will always stay the same.

An acoustic band born in the land of tech innovation, Front Country was never going to be accepted as an authentic American roots band out of the gate. Cutting their teeth in progressive bluegrass jams in San Francisco’s Mission District and rehearsing in the East Bay, they learned to play roots music their own way, with the tools they had on hand. A mandolinist with a degree in composition and classical guitar. A guitarist trained in rock and world music. A bassist equally versed in jazz and bluegrass. A violinist with technique that could seamlessly hop between honky tonk and electropop. A female lead singer with grit and soul that was also a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. In a wood-paneled country dive bar in the shadow of the San Francisco skyline, Front Country forged a sound hell-bent on merging the musical past with the future. Now they've moved to Nashville, released a new album, "Other Love Songs," and continued to impress listeners of all stripes as one of the most exciting roots bands around.

A Montreal-born Grenadian Canadian, Kaia Kater grew up between two worlds: her family’s deep ties to folk music and the years she spent soaking up Appalachian music in West Virginia. Her old-time banjo-picking skills, deft arrangements, and songwriting abilities have landed her in the spotlight in North America and the UK, garnering critical acclaim from outlets such as NPR, CBC Radio, Rolling Stone, BBC Music, and No Depression. Kaia started her career early, crafting her first EP, "Old Soul" (2013), when she was just out of high school. Since then, she’s gone on to release two more albums, "Sorrow Bound" (2015) and "Nine Pin" (2016). Her second album wove between hard-hitting songs touching on social issues like the Black Lives Matter movement (“Rising Down”) and more personal narratives speaking to life and love in the digital age (“Saint Elizabeth”). "Nine Pin" sent Kaia on an 18-month touring journey from Ireland to Iowa, including stops at The Kennedy Center, Hillside Festival and London's O2 Shepherd's Bush. For her third album, "Grenades," she has taken a decidedly different direction, choosing to lean into a wider array of sounds and styles, in order to convey a wider array of emotions and topics, most notably her paternal ancestry. Grenades has been nominated for a 2019 JUNO award for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year. Grand Rapids singer-songwriter Olivia Mainville opens.

The group has already performed in major cities and small towns in Canada, the US, Europe, the UK and Australia, and Africa, amassing a wealth of impressive experience in a short time. The group’s sound is a seamless blend of their strong folk upbringing and North American influences that range from old-time to jazz, with some provocative and moody effects. Their adaptations of traditional songs from Quebec, Brittany, and Louisiana speak eloquently to their generation while retaining the beauty of timeless music. Fiddle, guitar, lap steel, banjo, mandolin, piano, bass and foot percussion form a rich and varied backdrop for their inventive arrangements. Les Poules à Colin reveal a unique and modern perspective on traditional Québec culture.

Steven Page’s distinctive and powerful tenor is among the most instantly recognizable voices in popular music. Newly minted as a member of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame with former bandmates Barenaked Ladies, Steven Page has continued his artistic evolution with a diverse array of solo projects in music, film, theatre and television. He has composed six Stratford Festival scores, has collaborated and toured North America with Toronto’s innovative Art of Time Ensemble. Steven journeyed across Canada and the U.S. as host of TV’s "The Illegal Eater." Still the dynamic stage presence he’s always been, Steven Page is the consummate entertainer, performing music from both his solo career and his BNL years. He comes to Michigan with a new release, "Discipline: Heal Thyself, Part II." Nebraska-born, Portland-based duo The Talbott Brothers open: Blood is thicker than water and there’s nothing like family creating music together to prove it. With contrasting blood-harmonies and left-handed/right-handed guitar playing, singer-songwriter duo The Talbott Brothers combine rock, blues and pop with honest storytelling.

Over the past four decades, Robyn Hitchcock has built a large and distinctive body of work that's established him as one of rock's most respected and beloved iconoclasts. Drawing on roots in the music of John Lennon, Bob Dylan, and the New Wave, his unique songs veer from comic surrealism to slightly melancholy pictures of everyday life and the slightly eccentric people who live it--all set to gorgeous ore fun," he says. He describes his songs as "paintings you can listen to." Robyn comes to Michigan for his first new show in five years with several recent releases including a self-titled one he describes as "an ecstatic work of negativity with nary a dreary groove."

It was inevitable, perhaps—creative musical friends find other creative musical friends and can’t resist creating music together. Out of the heart of the Midwest, two veteran Michigan duos join forces in a new quartet/quintet: Diamonds in the Rust. In what began simply as an idea to tour together, Annie & Rod Capps and Jan Krist & Jim Bizer (along with percussionist/composer Alan Finkbeiner) have formed a new band. With each member already well known for performing prowess, the new group promises to be that much more. Everyone sings, everyone plays multiple instruments, and the band boasts a trio of respected, award-winning songwriters. The repertoire also includes a few choice selections from the rich musical history of the place where they grew and learned their craft. Perhaps best of all is the palpable joy and camaraderie that happens between good musicians who are also good friends. Says Rich Warren of WFMT Chicago's Folkstage: "They obviously love performing together and their diverse and skilled writing styles come to life with their upbeat and convincing performance."

Both individually and collectively The National's members have been involved in countless artistic, charitable and socio-political pursuits. The group released “A Lot of Sorrow” documenting their collaboration with installation artist Ragnar Kjartansson, that took place at MOMA’s PS1 and saw the band play their song “Sorrow” for six hours in front of a live audience. They are behind the Red Hot benefit albums Dark Was The Night and Day Of The Dead, and the compilation boxed set titled 7-Inches for Planned Parenthood. Band member’s have received a Golden Globe Nomination for work on the score of the 2015 film Revenant, founded or play a major part in MusicNow, Eaux Claires and Haven Festival and Boston Calling, and participated heavily in both Obama Presidential Campaigns, and much more.

2013 also saw the theatrical release of their documentary, Mistaken For Strangers set to the backdrop of the band’s 2010 release High Violet. The documentary was chosen to premiere on the opening night of the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival followed by a theatrical release in the US and worldwide distribution. Over their 16-year career the band has sold more than 1.7 million albums in the U.S. alone.

The National consists of Matt Berninger (vocals) fronting two pairs of brothers: Aaron (guitar, bass, piano) and Bryce Dessner (guitar, piano), and Scott (bass, guitar) and Bryan Devendorf (drums).

Rachel Baiman’s 2017 label debut, "Shame," was featured on NPR’s "Songs We Love," called a "rootsy wake-up call" by Folk Alley, and described by Vice’s Noisey as "flipping off authority one song at a time." She has toured for four years with 10 String Symphony and played fiddle for other musicians, including Kacey Musgraves. Now Baiman has announced "Thanksgiving," a self-produced four-song EP, featuring her live trio as well as special guests including Molly Tuttle and Josh Oliver. "Thanksgiving" is an intriguing follow-up, allowing her a chance to stretch out stylistically, moving effortlessly between bluegrass, to folk, old-time and country. The bittersweet lyricism she’s become known for conveys the push and pull of hardship and hope we often feel during the holiday season. Raised in Chicago by a radical economist and a social worker, Baiman was surrounded by social justice issues her entire life. “If I wanted to rebel against my parents I could have become a finance banker or a corporate lawyer” she says of her childhood, and her new music has a social and political emphasis.

The songwriting of The Adam Ezra Group is making waves around the country. It’s difficult to impart the roots-steeped, road-trippin' essence of the Adam Ezra Group into a single word, but front man Adam Ezra nonetheless keeps one in mind as something of a mantra: COMMUNITY. To the musicians at the heart of AEG, community is epitomized by a belief they all share, one that has long doubled as a mission statement for the group: namely, that making music together is itself a form of grassroots organizing, capable of nothing less than changing the world. The Adam Ezra Group plays upwards of 200 shows a year, often devoting their time to local charities and always going out of their way to connect with fans. Adam is creating a powerful, inclusive community around that is beginning to be compared to a social movement as much as a traditional music fan base. Says Ben Tishler of VH1: "Adam Ezra is one of the most promising songwriters to come along in years," and he has collaborated as a songwriter with the legendary John Oates.

Mark Lavengood (Lindsay Lou), Joe Wilson (Steppin' In It), and Drew Howard (a dozen albums by everyone from Mustard's Retreat to Peter Madcat Ruth) are well known to Michigan audiences for their work with other artists, but we're putting them together for an evening of Dobro synergy. When the Dopyera Brothers, John and Emil, formed the Dobro Manufacturing Company in 1929, they were dreaming of this show—they just didn't know it yet.

Inspired by artists such as the Sex Pistols, Elliott Smith, and Hank Williams, Sarah Shook sings with confidence, control, and, at times, a hint of menace. The Disarmers match her, coloring the tales of resilience and empathy with urgency and broad sonic sweep. It’s easy to hear Sarah as a close cousin to artists like Hurray for the Riff Raff and Margo Price, and she makes hard-core country music for a modern time. “You’re as good as gold/ I’m as good as gone,” she sings with a mix of vulnerability and defiance. Says Tidal: "Sarah Shook entered the spotlight as one of the most important new voices in new country music. Like she’s been there all her life."

Greg Brown's mother played electric guitar, his grandfather played banjo, and his father was a Holy Roller preacher in the Hacklebarney section of Iowa. Maybe that last item explains some of his amazing charisma! Greg's first professional singing job came at age 18 in New York City, running hootenannies at the legendary Gerdes Folk City. After a year, Greg moved west to Los Angeles and Las Vegas, where he was a ghostwriter for Buck Ram of the Platters. Over more than four decades on the road, Greg has developed into the essential Midwestern songwriter, with a deep feeling for what makes people and communities hang together. He's a compelling performer, aware that in folk music less is usually more and that the intimate musical detail communicates as well as the grand gesture. It's not so often that we see Greg Brown in southeastern Michigan, so this could be a very scarce ticket!

Delbert McClinton grew up singing and playing in the gutbucket clubs of Fort Worth, and in a sense he's never left. He still has a voice that will roar through the noise of a barroom or through any kind of mental clutter you might bring to one of his concerts. Delbert and his band backed the absolute royalty of deep blues as they came through town—Jimmy Reed, Sonny Boy Williamson, Bobby "Blue" Bland, and the incomparable Howlin' Wolf—and all that he saw and heard, he absorbed and passes along in his own music. (He gave John Lennon some pointers on the harmonica, to boot.) Delbert hasn't slowed down a bit, and his shows are an Ark tradition. So don't delay on getting tickets! Delbert is coming to town with an as-yet-untitled new release.

Recorded in Los Angeles the day after the historic 1994 Northridge earthquake and produced by Greg Leisz, "King of California" is an Americana classic. The album had its genesis its title track, a readymade folk ballad written for Dave's mother, in which an aspiring suitor heads west to make his fortune in the wild, still-young Golden State. “King of California is when I decided ‘this is when I let the song tell me what it sounds like,’” says Alvin. “Ever since then, that’s been my rule. It sounds ridiculous, but it was something I had to learn.” Originally released on Hightone Records, and being reissued by Craft Recordings, the remastered, expanded edition includes a previously unreleased instrumental studio track, “Riverbed Rag,” along with bonus material. And King of California is available on vinyl for the first time EVER! Come by and hear Dave's latest thinking on this great album, and pick up a copy. Dead Rock West opens with their tribute to The Everly Brothers.

As a young man returning from a trip to New Orleans with a newfound interest in swing, he co-founded the eclectic Americana group Appleseed Collective, with whom he has toured 150+ dates a year. Since slowing down his touring schedule in 2017, he began studying and performing the music of his favorite guitar player: Django Reinhardt. Since then he has studied at various music camps with many of the genres heavy-hitting players such as Angelo Debarre, Sebastian Gineaux, and Gonzalo Bergara, and was even invited to back up Denis Chang at one of his concerts. Andrew currently plays throughout Michigan with his own project Djangophonique, his band Appleseed Collective, and his friends' projects Third Coast Gypsy Jazz, and Smoking Dandies. He also teaches guitar, both generally and specifically, in the style of Django.

With "The Hurting Kind," John Paul White has crafted a stunning album that draws on the lush, orchestrated music made in Nashville in the early 1960s. Yet these songs retain a modern feel, whether he's writing about overwhelming love, unraveling relationships, or the fading memory of a loved one. John Paul White grew up in tiny Loretto, Tennessee, and now lives in Florence, Alabama, not far from Muscle Shoals. He has cultivated his career in Nashville for two decades, first as a songwriter for a major publisher, then as half of The Civil Wars—a groundbreaking duo that won four Grammy Awards before disbanding in 2012. Because The Civil Wars were so hard to categorize, White has earned a fan base among indie rock listeners, folk audiences, Americana outlets, and AAA radio. So, what will happen if people hear "The Hurting Kind" and call it country? “Well, that doesn’t scare me in the least,” he says. “As a matter of fact, it kind of thrills me.” Louisiana "art-swamp-rock" songwriter Caleb Elliott opens.

American Songwriter describes Eilen Jewell as, “one of America’s most intriguing, creative and idiosyncratic voices.” The Boise, Idaho songwriter is one of a kind.

That singular voice springs forth from a woman of more than one mind, and she taps into many of them on Gypsy (August, 2019 Signature Sounds Recordings). By turns personal and political, pissed off and blissed out, Jewell’s first album of original material since 2015 expands brief moments of joy into lifetimes, and distills epic sentiments and persistent doubts into succinct songs.

Jewell seamlessly blends heavy electric guitars and dirty fiddles on the rollicking country rocker “Crawl” with the sweet and understated horn section of the tender “Witness. "79 Cents (The Meow Song)" skewers sexism and discrimination with pointed humor over a circus bed of musical saw and horns

Longtime fans who love Eilen Jewell in classic country mode will delight in the pedal steel driven "These Blues" and the sole cover on Gypsy, "You Cared Enough To Lie,” written by fellow Idahoan and country legend Pinto Bennett.

Rather than pulling artist and listener this way and that, the tensions within and between these twelve tracks propel Eilen Jewell’s eighth studio album forward as a remarkably cohesive full-length.

Their second album on Compass, "Country Blues," released in 2016, testified to the growing diversity and expansion of their collaborative talents and repertoire, and since then the sky has been the limit. Raised in Tupelo, Mississippi, among the same spirits (and some of the actual people) who nurtured the young Elvis generations before, Paul Thorn has rambled down back roads, battled four-time world champion boxer Roberto Duran on national television, signed with and been dropped by a major label, performed on stages with Bonnie Raitt, Mark Knopfler, Sting, and John Prine among many others, and made some of the most emotionally restless yet relatable music of our time. With 20 years of writing, touring, and entertaining under his belt, he shows no sign of slowing down with his somewhat-gospel new record, "Don’t Let the Devil Ride," still breaking genre barriers and topping charts, putting a new twist on his already entertaining live show. Paul is an Ark favorite who never fails to connect with Michigan audiences.

The Gothard Sisters (July 30, 2019 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/61767 61767-15179577@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, July 30, 2019 8:00pm

Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

Springing from an immensely creative family of painters, woodworkers, sculptors, tapestry weavers, dancers and musicians, this band of sisters has always been comfortable with thinking outside the box. The Gothard Sisters' unpredictable and theatrical flair brings a youthful splash to the time-honored tradition of Celtic folk music, bridging the gap between classical, folk, Celtic, world, and roots influences with a sunny, optimistic style. When Edmonds, Washington, sisters Greta Gothard, Willow Gothard, and Solana Gothard fuse their musical talents together, the result is an irresistible mix of spritely violin and fiddle tones, pure sibling vocal harmonies, mandolin and pennywhistle accents, all supported by the powerful and exuberant rhythms of the Irish bodhran, African djembe, and acoustic guitar. The sisters' collaborative process and eclectic style has evolved into a jubilant live performance, full of entertaining sibling-banter, Irish step-dancing, foot-stomping tunes, lyrical melodies, storytelling, and a genuine lightness of heart that leaves audiences feeling refreshed and inspired. They come to Michigan with a new album, "Midnight Sun."

The Moxie Strings compose the majority of their pieces and arrange melodies from many traditions, resulting in a genre-blurring blend of ear-catching melodies and foot-stomping, rock-influenced rhythms. Alison performs on a newly invented electric cello, and Diana on a contemporary five-string violin, both through a variety of audio effects pedals. Fritz performs on a mix of world percussion instruments and drum kit. Their polished, high-energy show and unique sound have quickly made The Moxie Strings one of the country’s most promising instrumental acts.

Altan, named for Loch Altan in Ireland's County Donegal, has arguably had a wider impact on audiences over the last 30 years than any other traditional Irish band. Their dynamic and warm live performances mix the most touching old Irish songs with hard-hitting reels and jigs, and the band members' interest in and sheer enjoyment of each other musically is apparent even to audience members new to the Irish tradition. For the Irish music enthusiast, Altan has a treasure trove of brilliant moves to offer: the mix of sounds from Donegal with outside influences, the sheer virtuosity of the players, the beauty, delicate singing, and down-to-earth charm of singer and fiddler Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh. Anywhere they go, a concert by Altan is the Irish music event of the year, and last year they released a much-awaited new album, "The Gap of Dreams."

Students: Welcome to Ann Arbor and to The Ark, a world-class club with music for all ages and tastes! Canada’s Terra Lightfoot offers up something rare: the kind of genuine document that can only come from a road-tested breed of songwriter and performer. Shot through with the guitarist-vocalist’s powerful, bluesy soul, vivid lyrics and ferocious six-string virtuosity, it’s an unforgettable outing. Terra’s stunning, soulful voice powers her emotional wallops on her latest album "New Mistakes," laid low as a gentle whisper over the swirling finger-picking of “You Get High,” or belted out with nuclear swagger over the rock ’n’ soul grooves of “Hold You,” battling things out with a righteous Jake Clemons sax solo during its climax. And the only forces that can go toe-to-toe with Terra's vocal prowess are her guitar chops—and her fast-developing songwriting.

After a dozen acclaimed albums, virtuoso slide guitarist and bandleader Sonny Landreth found himself at an artistic crossroads. He wanted to finally create the full-length acoustic collection his fans had long requested. But he was also itching to capture the sound of his stalwart electric trio augmented by a couple of his favorite collaborators. And the time was certainly right for an elastic, career-spanning double-live album. So Sonny and his longtime friends decided to do it all. "Recorded Live in Lafayette" is a 16-song opus that covers more musical ground than any single album ever could, as the singer and songwriter’s work stretches and twists across 93 minutes of full-band acoustic and electric bottleneck lightning. You can get a taste of the magic without going to Lafayette right here at The Ark—Sonny Landreth is one of the great live guitarists of our time!

John McEuen brings with him 50+ years of worldwide performing with his banjo, fiddle, guitar, and mandolin. Often referred to as the String Wizard, he weaves stories of his travels and family life (he has raised seven kids), taking us through where his musical path has taken him. A Nitty Gritty Dirt Band founding member in 1966, John initiated the 1972 classic "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" album, (inducted in to the Library of Congress as ‘one of America’s most important recordings). Proud of being an integral part of America’s first band to go to Russia (28 sold-out shows in 1977!), John has a love of performing evident since his teenage Magic Shop days in Disneyland. With music from 1800s to now, original songs laced with known hits, (his current "Made in Brooklyn" album earned the Independent Music Award’s recognition as Best Americana album), and a special tribute to the ‘Circle’ album music and its stories, John McEuen and his history come to life in an evening of acoustic music in overdrive.

Nashville-based, Amy Speace is a folk singer, timeless and classic, and a bit out of her own era. "She has one of the richest and loveliest voices in the genre and her songs are luxuriously smart," writes journalist Craig Havighurst (host of Nashville’s Music City Roots). "She’s profoundly personal yet also a bit mythic." Since her discovery in 2006 by folk-pop icon Judy Collins, who signed her to her own imprint Wildflower Records, Amy has been heralded as one of the leading voices of the new generation of American folk singers. Her song “The Weight of the World” was named as the #4 Best Folk Song of the last decade by NYC’s premiere AAA radio station, WFUV and was recorded by Judy Collins. From her beginnings in New York City as a classically trained actress with The National Shakespeare Company, to the coffeehouses of Greenwich Village where she began playing her original songs, to her move to East Nashville in 2009, to her most recent release, "That Kind Of Girl,: what ties all of her work together is a palpable empathy for the small struggles of the human condition. Rock critic Dave Marsh, long a fan, wrote taht "Amy Speace’s songs hang together like a short story collection, united by a common vantage point and common predicaments … it’s a gift to hear a heart so modest even when it’s wide open." She comes to Michigan with a brand-new release, "Me and the Ghost of Charlemagne."

This show is free at the door for Ark members at the Solo level and above.

The heartland gave the band authenticity. Musical lives honed its skill. Adversity instilled its persistence. Moving to Austin gave it wings to fly. Understanding the virtuosity of Reckless Kelly requires the perspective of where the band has been. Cody and Willy Braun grew up in the White Cloud Mountains of Idaho. They moved to Bend, Oregon, and then migrated to that great musical fountainhead, Austin, Texas. It's natural that Reckless Kelly, born in the dreams of the two Braun brothers and their heritage but nurtured in the bumpy road of maturity, became the very essence of Americana music in all its far-flung glory. "We came along in that second wave of the movement," Cody Braun says. “Son Volt’s album 'Trace' had a major effect on us. People like Joe Ely, Ray Kennedy and Robert Earl Keen were always big supporters. Our goal was to make music that had a country vibe but a solid rock edge. As Music Row magazine proclaimed, "In my perfect world, this is what country radio would sound like."

Justin Townes Earle (September 23, 2019 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/64798 64798-16444955@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, September 23, 2019 8:00pm

Justin Townes Earle has done a lot of living in his 37 years. For starters, there’s the quick-hit bullet points about his childhood that seem to get dredged up in every interview, article or review about the singer-songwriter and guitarist: Born the son of Steve Earle, who was largely absent during Justin’s childhood; struggles from a young age with addiction and numerous stints in rehab; long stretches of itinerancy and general juvenile delinquency; a youth he once said he was “lucky to have gotten out of alive.”

That’s before we get to the years spent honing his craft in Nashville bars and on club stages all over the world; the various bands, record labels and industry types that have been drawn toward and, at times, pushed away by him; and, finally, the celebrated and rather formidable body of work he has amassed since releasing his critically-acclaimed 2007 debut EP, Yuma.

It’s a seemingly bottomless well of material for a singer-songwriter to mine out of just three decades or so of life. And Earle at times has—most recently on his 2017 album, Kids in the Street, which the artist calls “one of the more personal records I’ve ever made.”

But when it came to his newest effort, The Saint of Lost Causes, Earle, these days sober, married and father to a baby girl, chose to focus his gaze outward. “Maybe having a kid has made me look at the world around me more,” he says.
