This year marks the 50th anniversary of the movie "Alice’s Restaurant,” based on the song by Arlo Guthrie. To commemorate the occasion, Arlo has arranged a special tour, running through 2020, to revisit the incredible events that began on Thanksgiving in 1965. "Alice’s Restaurant Massacree" struck a chord with the anti-war counterculture. By 1967 Guthrie had gone from playing small clubs to playing festivals and stadiums. :Arthur Penn (who had just finished filming Bonnie & Clyde) heard the record when it came out in 1967," recalled Arlo. "He also happened to live in Stockbridge, where the events took place. He thought it would be a great idea to make it into a movie. And he did." For this tour, Arlo will be joined on stage by longtime collaborators Terry “A La Berry” Hall (drums), Steve Ide (guitar, vocals), and Carol Ide (vocals, percussion). "I didn’t think I was gonna live long enough to have to learn ‘Alice's Restaurant' again," Arlo says with a smile. "It was a quirky kinda thing

In the music of The Cactus Blossoms, the country sibling harmonies of The Everly Brothers and The Louvin Brothers come alive for modern times. As we got to hear at the 2018 Ann Arbor Folk Festival, brothers Page Burkum and Jack Torrey sing and play the guitar, and their voices fit together as only brother duets can. The Cactus Blossoms were born and raised in Minneapolis and grew up on rock and pop, but they always had a fondness for old-time country and folk tunes. They began playing as a duo in 2010, soon they added classic-style originals to their repertoire and landed a band-in-residence spot at St. Paul's Turf Club. The Cactus Blossoms began playing clubs beyond Minnesota as headliners, and toured with Kacey Musgraves. They were signed to the Red House label, released their debut album, "You're Dreaming," and saw their song "Mississippi" featured on Twin Peaks. The Cactus Blossoms come to Michigan with a new release, "Easy Way." New Orleans songwriter Esther Rose is special guest.

We know—Tom Paxton had a farewell tour a few years ago. Kidding! Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner and folk icon Tom Paxton is back, and he's teaming up with the Grammy-winning Nashville singer/songwriter duo The Don Juans—Don Henry & Jon Vezner! Collectively, their songs have been covered by: Harry Belafonte, John Mellencamp, Miranda Lambert, Neil Diamond, Ray Charles, Nancy Griffith, Judy Collins, Pete Seeger, Janis Ian, Kathy Mattea, John Denver, Faith Hill, B.J. Thomas, Blake Shelton, Peter, Paul & Mary and Bob Dylan … just to name a few! Within days of writing and playing together, they knew they were onto something, and they soon took it on the road. Ever since the days of Porter & Dolly's cover of "The Last Thing on My Mind," the songs of Tom Paxton have had a special resonance with Nashville songwriters, and now the tradition continues!

Over the last decade, Pokey LaFarge has won the hearts of music lovers across the globe with his creative mix of early jazz, string ragtime, country blues and western swing, all while writing songs that ring true in both spirit and sound. His music transcends the confines of genre, continually challenging the notion that tradition-bearers fail to push musical boundaries. Cleverly striding among numerous forms of traditional American music, Pokey has crafted a genre all his own, marked by its accessible ingenuity. Rather than merely conjuring up half-forgotten imagery of days past, Pokey is a lyrical storyteller, the plot delivered smoothly through his dynamic vocals. One moment he shouts a line and the next he croons above his archtop guitar. He transmits a rare distillation of old American sounds!

Guitar gods in training, take notice. Voted Guitarist of the Decade by Guitarist magazine and Best Acoustic Fingerstylist four years in a row by readers of Guitar Player, Adrian Legg dazzles audiences with an unclassifiable mixture of country, jazz, folk, rock, and classical styles. For all his rapid-fire playing, though, Adrian never loses sight of melodies and their power to move us. And on top of that, he's a tall tale teller of the first order, with a dry sense of humor that would be reason enough in itself to come to one of his concerts. Says Newsday: "Unlike Richard Thompson or Robert Fripp, in whose league he belongs, Legg seems never to have been seduced by rock. But unlike Leo Kottke or Ry Cooder, whom he also occasionally resembles, Adrian Legg is an adventurer, not an archivist." He is, quite simply, one of the greatest guitarists in the world, and perhaps the very least heralded among that group.

The modern renaissance of folk music began when John Gorka won the Kerrville Folk Festival's New Folk award in 1984, and it grew to maturity when he released his debut album, "I Know," three years later. Here was a singer-songwriter with a striking baritone voice that made you feel like you'd been hearing it all your life, with the songwriting chops to take on and see into nearly every type of song—from personal pieces about love and sadness, to bemused observations about daily life, political thinking-aloud, and sheer unmitigated whimsy. Three and a half decades later, John still calls himself an aspiring folksinger, and his music has just kept getting deeper and better over his 15 critically acclaimed albums. John isn't on the road as much as he used to be, so don't miss this chance to catch a folk classic.

People all over the world think of the haunting "Ashokan Farewell," from the Ken Burns PBS series The Civil War, as an American folk song. But it's actually the creation of fiddler Jay Ungar and guitarist Molly Mason, musical partners since the 1970s and a marital duo since 1991. And "Ashokan Farewell" is just a small part of what they do. Listen to their timeless renditions of hard-driving Appalachian, Cajun and Celtic fiddle tunes, stirring Civil War classics, sassy songs from the golden age of swing and country, stunning waltzes, and deeply moving original compositions—and you'll find a pair of musicians who put on a great show and have a lifelong love for the music they make. Says Geoffrey Himes of Amazon.com: "Jay Ungar . . . is almost without peer as a composer of fiddle tunes. [He is] blessed with that rare knack for making his melodies move in ways that stir the listener's longings." Jay and Molly come to Michigan with a new release, the score for the Western film "The Divide."

Bruce Robinson and Kelly Willis, both superb songwriters and treasures of the Texas alternative country scene, joined forces personally when they married in 1996. They're parents of four children, including a pair of twins. Bruce and Kelly have made classic albums separately, and each one has put songs atop the country charts for others (including Bruce's heart-rending "Travelin' Soldier" for The Dixie Chicks). From time to time they join forces, and their new collaboration, "Beautiful Lie," has been earning raves. The music they make together has a strong traditionalist tint that evokes classic country dance halls and some of the great duets in country history, duets like Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris who understood each other's every move. We haven't heard either Bruce or Kelly at The Ark for a while, so this is a rare, not-to-miss treat.

Westbound Situation is pushing the boundaries of chamber music forward. Four young, talented, acoustic musicians with instrumental prowess only surpassed by love of collaboration have brought their diverse musical backgrounds together to create an exciting result. With each member being one of the most highly regarded young players in genres ranging from roots, to classical and jazz, Westbound Situation fuses these musical influences into a unique original repertoire. Westbound Situation blends the precision of classical chamber music, the rhythmic drive of bluegrass, and the colorful expression of jazz into a new style of chamber music—chambergrass. The quartet—comprising Grant Flick on violin, Matt Davis on banjo, Zach Brown on cello, and Jacob Warren on bass—mixes composition and improvisation seamlessly into their entirely memorized arrangements.

Wilco is a Chicago sextet formed by singer-songwriter and guitarist Jeff Tweedy in the mid-1990s. The band’s current lineup solidified in 2004 when guitarist Nels Cline and guitarist/keyboardist Patrick Sansone joined Tweedy, founding bassist John Stirratt, drummer Glenn Kotche and keyboardist Mikael Jorgensen. Wilco’s brand of classic roots rock incorporates folk, pop and genre-spanning experimentalism. The band’s 10-album catalog includes 2002’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (named one of the 500 greatest albums of all time by Rolling Stone), 2005’s Grammy award-winning A Ghost is Born, the Grammy-nominated Wilco (The Album) and The Whole Love and more. NPR has called Wilco “the best rock band in America” and the band has been heralded by the Los Angeles Times as “an amazing machine whose six players seem more at one with their music than any rock group working today.”

The roots of David Wax Museum stretch back over a decade, and all the way from New England to Mexico. As a student at Harvard, David Wax began traveling south of the border to study and immerse himself in Mexico's traditional music and culture. Back in Boston, he met fiddler/singer Suz Slezak, whose love of traditional American and Irish folk music fused with Wax's Mexo-Americana into a singular, energetic blend that captivated audiences and critics alike (Bob Boilen of NPR Music hailed their live performance as "pure, irresistible joy"). Their 2010 breakout performance at the Newport Folk Festival made them the most talked-about band of the weekend. They released a trio of albums that earned escalating raves everywhere from SPIN and Entertainment Weekly (which described them as sounding "like Andrew Bird with a Mexican folk bent") to the New York Times and the Guardian (which dubbed the music "global crossover at its best").

The Honeydrops have come a long way since guitarist and trumpeter Lech Wierzynkski and drummer Ben Malament started busking in an Oakland subway station, but the band has stayed true to that organic, street-level feel. Listening to Lech sing, it can be a surprise that he was born in Warsaw, Poland, and raised by Polish political refugees. He learned his vocal stylings from contraband American recordings of Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, and Louis Armstrong, and later at Oberlin College and on the club circuit in Oakland, California. With the additions of Johnny Bones on tenor sax and clarinet, Lorenzo Loera on keyboards, and Beau Bradbury on bass, they’ve built a powerful full-band sound to support Wierzynski’s vocals. More like parties than traditional concerts, their shows feature extensive off-stage jamming and crowd interaction. “The whole point is to erase the boundaries between the crowd and us,” Wierzynski says.

Guitarist Javier Matos opens.

Dick Siegel never loses an edge that ranges from wry to sharp. Dick won the Best New Folk Artist award at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas, and he's inspired plenty of songwriters in Michigan and beyond. Recently he's been showing up at next-generation roots events like Hollerfest and fitting right in. Dick is an immensely gifted and versatile composer. Ranging from jump blues and Buddy Holly-style pop to folk balladry and new folk lyricism, his songs offer all sorts of immediate lyrical and musical pleasures. Dick was named in WDET's list of the most important and influential artists in the history of Detroit, alongside legends such as John Lee Hooker, Stevie Wonder, and Aretha Franklin. "I'm celebratory—I celebrate life from the huge to the minute, from the tragic to the hilarious," he explains. In concert, he expertly steps into the roles of a raconteur, a confidante, your best friend, a prophet, a comedian, a pair of eyes on the universe, and an interpreter of daydreams.

Taylor says that he wanted to make Terms of Surrender; “a wandering record. I wanted where we recorded it to mirror the searching spirit of the music.” Having written upwards of 40 songs—in motel rooms, his studio in Durham, and a secluded cottage outside of Charlottesville, Virginia—Taylor winnowed them down to the ten works that comprise Terms of Surrender. With regular collaborators—including Phil and Brad Cook, Josh Kaufman, and Matt McCaughan—and new friends like Jenny Lewis and Aaron Dessner (of The National), the crew decamped to Dessner’s Long Pond studio in upstate New York, Sound City in Los Angeles, and producer Roger Moutenot’s Haptown studio in Nashville to create the most fully realized and genre-defying Hiss Golden Messenger album to date.

The Flatlanders—Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely, and Butch Hancock—came together in Lubbock, Texas, in 1971. They were an insider's secret during the golden era of Austin music and recorded one album together; it disappeared almost immediately, but rare copies circulated from hand to hand for years afterward. The three individual Flatlanders, meanwhile, had gone on to solo careers as some of Texas's top singer-songwriters. Lately they've begun playing occasional shows, imbued with a new sense of what they shared and of what each member—cosmic cowboy Gilmore, rocker Ely, and songcrafter Hancock—brought to the group. The end result is a sort of apotheosis of Texas music, a relaxed, creative show in which anything can happen and probably will.

Born in New Hampshire, Brendan James cut his artistic teeth in New York and is now based in Los Angeles. His piano-based songwriting style is influenced by artists of the 1970s (with more than a bit of Stevie Wonder) and by more recent artists such as Ryan Adams. Brendan released his debut full-length album, "The Day Is Brave," on the Decca label in 2008 and a follow-up, "Brendan James," two years later. He has been a headliner on the MTV Soundtracker tour and, with Jason Reeves and Amber Rubarth, on a tour sponsored by Vespa motor scooters on which he traveled along the West Coast on a Vespa to promote environmental awareness. He took an artistic hiatus and roared back stronger than ever. Since we saw him last, Brendan has released a new EP, "Wish You Well," and he has more new music on the way. Singer-songwriter (and investment banker and crossword puzzle maker) Pete Muller opens.

Delta Rae is a six-person folk-rock band from Durham, North Carolina, that includes siblings Ian, Eric, and Brittany Hölljes. The band's name came from a story their mother made up about a girl by that name who calls the Greek gods to Earth. The Hölljes siblings grew up partly in North Carolina and partly in the San Francisco Bay Area, and both places contributed strands to their musical DNA. After college, they moved into a house in the forest and set about finding their musical voice. Their early shows were legendary. "A lot of times we’d come down off stage and sing something in the middle of the audience, or be screaming out as opposed to singing in order to convey the emotion, to find something primal that will affect people," Ian recalls.

In the decade of dancing down their crazy path, Secret Agent 23 Skidoo has evolved a sound and style that never dumbs down the music or underestimates the audience. With funk and beats as real as bands that play at midnight, and with lyrics that aren’t afraid to employ a larger vocabulary that what is currently heard on mainstream radio for grown ups, Skidoo fashions a world intended for the whole family. The universal constants that we all deal with, such as love, struggle, dreams, fear and learning to become ourselves, are the soul of these musical adventures that bounce, fly and slide smoothly through landscapes of wild imagination.

Previously of the Grammy-winning Turtle Island Quartet, also nominated for a Grammy for Best Instrumental Composition in 2018, Jeremy Kittel has been a composer-arranger-collaborator for such diverse artists as My Morning Jacket, Yo-Yo Ma & the Silk Road Ensemble, and Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn. He blazes through a Bach violin partita as easily as a Scottish reel, bringing the same intense focus and precision to both. For the last few years the Michigan native, now based in Brooklyn, has been diligently building his own repertoire of music for a wholly original new group. His all-star band, Kittel and Co., features mandolin phenomenon Josh Pinkham (named “the future of the mandolin” by Mandolin Magazine), guitarist Quinn Bachand (“Canada’s Top Celtic Guitarist”—Ashley MacIsaac), cellist Nathaniel Smith (Sarah Jarosz, Kacey Musgraves), and hammer-dulcimer wizard Simon Chrisman (acclaimed for bringing a new tonal flexibility to the instrument).

Nellie McKay has released, she says, seven relatively accomplished albums, won a Theatre World Award for her Broadway portrayal of Polly Peachum in The Threepenny Opera, co-created and starred in the award-winning Broadway hit Old Hats, written compelling musical biographies of a variety of female figures, and much more that's unlike anything else out there. Nellie McKay's latest album, "Sister Orchid," speaks of the night, the outsider, the plaintive wail of those lost at sea. "Sister Orchid" was conceived in solitude, executed in darkness. It comes from a place of quiet, a world of low lights and cool drinks, up against a hard wall. An oasis of hungry eyes and easy promises, warm as a biscuit, the kind of place your mother warned you against. If you haven't heard Nellie McKay, you don't know what you're missing!

Kentucky-born singer-songwriter Joan Shelley opened for Patty Griffin at The Ark several years ago. She was recently featured on NPR's "Fresh Air" and has been compared to Sandy Denny and Vashti Bunyan. Joan is a songwriter and singer from Louisville. She draws inspiration from traditional and traditionally minded performers from her native Kentucky, as well as those from Ireland, Scotland, and England, but she’s not a folksinger. Her disposition aligns more closely with that of, say, Roger Miller, Dolly Parton, or her fellow Kentuckian Tom T. Hall, who once explained—simply, succinctly, in a song—"I Witness Life." Joan has shared shows with the likes of Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Wilco, Chris Smither, Andrew Bird, and Richard Thompson, and Jeff Tweedy produced her 2017 record "Joan Shelley" at The Loft in Chicago. She comes to Michigan with a new release, "Like the River Loves the Seal."

A haggis is a tasty Scottish dish consisting of sheep heart, liver, and lungs, mixed with oatmeal, onion, suet, and spices, and then boiled inside the sheep's stomach. The Canadian-Scots band Enter the Haggis (bagpiper Craig Downie is from Scotland) has just about as much variety in their style, a high-speed collision of Celtic music, rock, bluegrass, funk, and world music. An Enter the Haggis live show is a musical feast—dynamic and emotionally uplifting. Alternating between upbeat rock numbers with sing-along choruses and slower, more introspective alt pop songs, the band plays progressive and lyrically driven music that’s strongly rooted in Celtic tradition—from the storytelling to the bagpipes. Enter the Haggis returns to The Ark with an as-yet-untitled new release—be the first one on your block!

Birds of Chicago, the husband-and-wife duo of JT Nero and Allison Russell, reassert the simple notion that beautiful words and music can still tap deep veins of emotion. With stark, elemental imagery that feels like scripture, or a lost folk song recovered, The Birds draw heavily on the gospel tradition, and they call their music secular gospel. For Birds of Chicago, every word counts. Every note counts. No gold-dusting, no filler. Music is the good news, and the music of this duo has a quiet but seismic urgency. Birds of Chicago alternate moody rock swagger with ghostly soundscapes. Their music is melancholy but never shoe-gazing. raw and soul-rich. Birds of Chicago have developed a fervent following, touring 200 nights a year since their formation in late 2012. They're coming to Michigan with an ambitious new release, "Love in Wartime," that they call "a rock and roll suite with a cinematic sweep." It's co-produced by Nero and Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars).

Born in a sandstone victorian farmhouse that has been in his family since it was built four generations ago, Andrew Brown is the son of a Motown session musician and grew up listening to the sounds of his dad’s piano as he steeped in musical influences from Duke Ellington to Stevie Wonder. As a young man returning from a trip to New Orleans with a newfound interest in Swing music, he co-founded the eclectic americana group Appleseed Collective, with whom he has toured 150+ dates a year. Traveling all over the continental United States, playing esteemed venues and festivals such as The Ark, Sisters Folk Festival, Wheatland, Cervantes Ballroom, Summercamp Music Festival, Schuba’s, and The Ann Arbor Folk Festival at Hill Auditorium, he cut his teeth as a guitarist, songwriter and band leader. Since slowing down his touring schedule in 2017 he began tirelessly practicing and performing the music of his favorite guitar player: Django Reinhardt. Since then he has studied at various music camps with many of the genres heavy hitting players such as Angelo Debarre, Sebastian Gineaux, and Gonzalo Bergara, and was even invited to back up Denis Chang at one of his concerts. Andrew currently plays throughout Michigan with his own project Djangophonique, his band Appleseed Collective, and his friends projects Third Coast Gypsy Jazz, Smoking Dandies. He also teaches guitar, both generally and specifically in the style of Django.

Bill Kirchen is an Ann Arbor-bred guitar god, a Telecaster titan who whirls through a whole gallery of country and rock styles over the course of an evening. Some things haven't changed—the Austin American-Statesman recently praised his "no-nonsense diesel guitar attack, powered by great booming, bottom-heavy licks still covered with axle grease." But Bill has evolved into a very funny rockabilly and country songwriter as well. "New Ways" is a new album by Montreal’s Leif Vollebekk, whose music has been described as inhabiting a space between Sigur Rós and Bob Dylan. Two years ago, things were changing fast, and the songwriter didn’t want to forget. "I often think of Leonard Cohen’s line, 'I hope you’re keeping some kind of record,'" Leif says. "So I did." It was like he was pretending you can compose a soundtrack to your own life (which perhaps you can). In the end, "New Ways" is a document of everything felt, the way each moment arrived and moved through him. Whereas his Polaris Prize–winning "Twin Solitude" was about self-reflection, "New Ways" is about engaging and changing, touching and being touched. It’s a physical record, with louder and tighter grooves, and the rawest lyrics the musician has ever recorded. A portrait of beauty, desire, longing, risk, remembrance—without an instant of regret. "She’s my woman and she loved me so fine," goes the chorus to one tune. "She’ll never be back."

Hailed as “Midwestern rock heroes” by American Songwriter, Red Wanting Blue has spent the last twenty years establishing themselves as one of the indie world’s most enduring and self-sufficient acts, notching appearances everywhere from Letterman to NPR and reaching #3 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, all while operating largely outside the confines of the traditional music industry. For their powerful new album, ‘The Wanting,’ the band handed production duties over to acclaimed singer/songwriter Will Hoge, who helped them create their most ambitious, fully realized collection yet. Recorded in Nashville, TN, the record draws on many of the group’s traditional strengths—indelible melodies, infectious hooks, explosive performances—even as the making of it pushed them far outside their comfort zone and forced them to take an unprecedented, nearly year-long break from touring.

A songwriter since early adolescence, he has woven together music, art, history, and activism in his many projects. From Dispatch, which he started in his early 20s; to his politically driven band, State Radio; to his nascent solo project, Chadwick Stokes and the Pintos, Chad has committed himself to using music as a vehicle for social and political change. Along with his wife, Sybil, he founded Calling All Crows, a nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging music fans around women's issues both at home and abroad. They've worked to bring awareness to the worldwide refugee crisis, to the proliferation of violence against women and to the persistence of sexual violence within the music industry.

It happens in the middle of Michigan in the heart of December. Since 2007, it has become a yearly tradition for The Ragbirds to present this unique family-friendly holiday show called Ebird & Friends. The songs and artists change from year to year, but the spirit of the event is community, the soul is creativity and the show is unforgettable. "Ebird"is Erin Zindle, lead singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist of The Ragbirds. Erin’s budding childhood love of music was sparked at Christmastime. The holidays were the one time each year that the entire Zindle family gathered to make music together, and that early communal experience of music took deep roots. Fiddles, horns, bagpipes, guitars, and instruments from all over the world will be sounding their voices together in harmony. Expect to be entertained, surprised, cheered, and warmed by this collaborative artistic performance of new and old songs, including Ragbirds' original songs inspired by the holiday. This show has become a phenomenon—it's up to four presentations this year for its 12th anniversary, and it shows no signs of slowing down.

A new era of Honky Tonk has arrived with what Zachariah Malachi & The Hillbilly Executives are bringing to the table.

With the biblical name his daddy gave him, Zachariah Malachi weaps tales of heartache, love and struggle that will remind you of a time where honky tonk music was widely used as a coping mechanism for everyday life.

The Hillbilly Executives are deserving of their name. As true masters of their craft, they bring the sound of bygone days to life as they back the words and emotion evoked one song at a time.

Singer-songwriter and pianist Anne Heaton has captured audience imaginations for over 15 years with her songs that are, by turns, "tender, barbed and spiritual" (Washington Post). She's been featured by the New York Times Popcast, played numerous times on NPR and shared the stage with artists such as Jewel, Sarah McLachlan and jazz drummer Max Roach. The New York Times music podcast called her music "absolutely gorgeous" and with "To the Light," her seventh studio album, due out this November, Heaton is surrendering to her love of collaboration more than ever before.

The father-daughter duo of San & Emily Slomovits have been playing music together since Emily was a young child. San, along with his brother Laz, as the duo Gemini, have been a highly popular folk act throughout Michigan and the United States since 1973, and Emily began joining them on stage when she was just eight years old. Now 25, Emily is an accomplished violinist, at ease in a variety of genres from classical to folk, pop and jazz, while her exceptional voice and experience as an actor allows her to convincingly present styles ranging from folk to tunes from Broadway musicals. San and Emily’s beautifully blended, genetically enhanced harmonies and warm stage presence are hallmarks of all their shows. Emily recently moved to Chicago, but regularly returns to Ann Arbor to continue playing music with her dad and other musicians. For this concert San and Emily will be joined by two of their favorite collaborators, bassist Jacob Warren and pianist Brian Brill. One set will feature San, Emily and Jacob playing virtuosic arrangements of classical, folk, klezmer and pop tunes, while in the other set San, Emily and Brian will perform songs from classic Hollywood movies and Broadway musicals such as Oklahoma, The Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, The Wizard of Oz and more.

Brother Joscephus and the Love Revolution play a foot stomping gumbo of roots rock, old-school soul, New Orleans rhythms, and feel-good secular Gospel. Since 2007, they have been on a musical mission to make the world a more righteous place! The two main visionaries of this musical explosion of love, Brother Joscephus and his eccentric cohort the Right Reverend Dean Dawg, dip heavily into a gumbo rich with New Orleans rhythms, old-school soul, classic rock stylings, and feel-good gospel music. They combine all this with a message of righteousness, urging us toward acceptance and love for one another. From their home base in Brooklyn, New York, BroJo has brought its Love Revivals to cities all over the country. When you combine the music and the message with a one-of-a-kind high-energy stage spectacle, you've got the makings of a revolution!

Kick off the new year with not one but eight Michigan songwriters: "One Shining Moment" composer David Barrett, Detroit native and Great American Song Contest winner Jim Bizer, contemporary country-folk road warrior Annie Capps, Irish-American chanteuse Kitty Donohoe, four-time Detroit Music Award winner Jan Krist, Michael Hough and David Tamulevich of the "Music to Cure What Ails You" duo Mustard's Retreat, and southeastern Michigan folk veteran Matt Watroba. The Yellow Room is the "brilliantly yellow" living room of Tamulevich's house on Ann Arbor's Old West Side, where gang members meet monthly for musical brainstorming and mutual critique. Come and be a fly on the wall as the exchange of creative ideas flows freely! "To have any one of these songwriters perform at Trinity House is a real treat," says promoter Bill Keith.

Mix the Hot Club of Paris with the sweaty soul of Dixieland, a couple blades of bluegrass, a pinch of ragtime beat, and a western swinging swagger, and you've just conjured the washboard-driven sound of The Appleseed Collective. The Appleseed Collective is poised to become the new sound of string music. Riding the wave of the bluegrass revival beyond newgrass and into a strange new genre-bending territory, they explore the full range of dark and light, old and new, composition and improvisation in a deeply theatrical stage show that transports audiences through time. "The blends of swing, bluegrass, Dixieland ditties and alluring gypsy-folk whirls—is something close to a transcendent listen ... you're there, on some dirtroad, being led on by these songs," says reviewer Jeff Milo of iSpy magazine. The Appleseed Collective has been getting attention from as far away as the UK, and this is a Michigan band that's going places!

Widely hailed for his fingerstyle and hybrid picking technique, Albert Lee helped to redefine country guitar for a whole generation of players with his song "Country Boy." Albert’s many career highlights include two Grammy wins, five years in the Eric Clapton band, and stints with the Rolling Stones' Bill Wyman, The Crickets, the Everly Brothers, Joe Cocker, Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell and many more. Take it from Emmylou, who says, "When Saint Peter asks me to chronicle my time down here on earth, I'll be able to say—with pride if that's allowed—that for a while I played rhythm guitar in a band with Albert Lee."

Born in a sandstone Victorian farmhouse that has been in his family since it was built four generations ago, Andrew Brown is the son of a Motown session musician and grew up listening to the sounds of his dad’s piano as he steeped in musical influences from Duke Ellington to Stevie Wonder. As a young man returning from a trip to New Orleans with a newfound interest in Swing music, he co-founded the eclectic Americana group Appleseed Collective, with whom he has toured 150+ dates per year. Andrew currently plays throughout Michigan with his own project Djangophonique, his band Appleseed Collective, and his friends' projects Third Coast Gypsy Jazz, and Smoking Dandies. He also teaches guitar, both generally and specifically in the style of Django

Michigan Emmy award-winning songwriter Kitty Donohoe was born into a large, creative family outside of Detroit and has been ‘making up’ songs for as long as she can remember. Describing her music as ‘folky, bluesy, Irishy, American, Canadianish’, she draws from her roots to create music that is uniquely her own ~ music that’s "haunting, melodic and literate" (All Music Guide_. With a love of language, an innate sense of melody, and the soul of a storyteller, she backs herself on piano, guitar and cittern with equal finesse, but she sees these skills as mostly providing the foundation for the music she writes, both songs and instrumentals. Kitty’s latest CD, The Irishman’s Daughter, combines her original pieces with some traditional music and is getting great reviews.

Joe Pug has collected plenty of the requisite Dylan comparisons over his career, but in his new music it's easier to hear the sway of contemporary influences from the likes of The Milk Carton Kids' Kenneth Pattengale, who produced Joe's new album. :The Flood In Color” has been nearly four years in the making. But the album started with the goal of focusing on the simplicity of musicians playing together, live, in the same room. Recently relocating back to his childhood home in Prince Georges County, Maryland after many years spent in Chicago and Austin, Joe wanted take a new approach. The partnership with Pattengale proved to be an irresistible opportunity to do just that. Come and check out this new direction from an Ark favorite! Matthew Wright opens.

Crystal Bowersox's emotive folk-rock-country style was catapulted from the cramped coffeehouses and cavernous subway tunnels of Chicago to millions of homes across America when she placed second in Season 9 of American Idol. Along with her old soul of a voice, her carefree style and "don't mess with me" attitude set her apart from the other contestants and eventually landed the self-taught songstress performances with the like of the legendary Joe Cocker, Harry Connick, Jr., and Alanis Morrissette. Crystal started out in Toledo's folk clubs and coffeehouses, notably the Village Idiot in Maumee. Now she's moved to Nashville, added an Americana element that fits her voice beautifully, and is ready to take on the world!

JigJam is a multi-award winning quartet from the heart of the midlands in Ireland. Blending the best of traditional Irish music with Bluegrass and Americana in a new genre which has been branded as 'I-Grass' (Irish-influenced Bluegrass), their onstage energy along with their virtuosic musical ability has captivated audiences throughout the world. Says "Here's an Irish band that's going to impact the world as hard as Clancy Brothers or U2 if they get only half a chance." Jamie McKeogh, Cathal Guinan and Daithi Melia all hail from Tullamore, County Offaly with County Tipperary–born Gavin Strappe completing the quartet. All four members grew up immersed in Irish traditional music and culture, and the band has collectively achieved over twenty All-Ireland titles at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann competitions. They have now developed their own unique style of music influenced by American folk music while staying true to their Irish roots.

Three decades into an illustrious and multifaceted career, Kevin Griffin finally decided to write and record his very first full-length solo album, "Anywhere You Go." The Better Than Ezra frontman, award-winning songwriter, and Pilgrimage Festival co-founder has added yet another persona to his resume: solo troubadour. Buoyed by minimal production, sweeping vocal harmonies, and narrative lyricism, he’s penned some of his most intimate, inimitable, and irresistible tunes to date.“My guiding rule was to do something different…” says Griffin. “…to just do the opposite of my first instinct. I wanted to bring all the music that I’m moved by into a collection of songs that didn’t pull from my usual bag of tricks. I started with no expectations, considerations, or concessions other than just wanting to make music that I loved, and I think because of that the whole process has been a joy."

One of the best live acts to come out of Ireland in recent years is the multi-awarded winning We Banjo 3. With a seven-time all-Ireland banjo champ, a four-time banjo champ, another member who is an all-Ireland champ on both fiddle and bodhran, and with a passionate lead vocalist like a young Springsteen adopted by the Chieftains (yes, they're a quartet, but there are three banjos), the result is unforgettable. On both sides of the Atlantic the word is out about this group! WB3 performed at the “Friends of Ireland” luncheon on Capitol Hill attended by House Speaker Paul Ryan, President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny, and has headlined virtually every major U.S .Celtic fest for several years in a row. With a strong bluegrass influence (they call their music "Celtgrass"), the band is rapidly gaining favor in the worlds of bluegrass and Americana as well, as evidenced by their invites to Merlefest, ROMP Fest, Sisters Folk Fest, Old Settlers Fest, Four Corners Fest, and more! They come to Michigan with a new release, "Haven.

The Tartan Terrors are not a band but, in the words of the organizers, "North America's premiere Celtic event, featuring the best in music, comedy and dance." Amazed by the blistering chops of a two-time world champion bagpiper, the driving tones of drums from around the world, and a guitar played unlike any you've ever heard, standing-room-only audiences come to understand why Dig This magazine declares the Terrors "one act to keep an eye on!" Combine all the music with championship-caliber Highland Dancers and internationally recognized comedic performers, and this Celtic group goes beyond the ordinary. Members of The Tartan Terrors have performed on four different continents; in some of the most prestigious festivals, Highland Games, and theaters in North America, for a U.S. president and Britain's Queen, and on Good Morning America. Experience the phenomenon of the Tartan Terrors and see why Celtic Beat hails them as "the heirs apparent to the mayhem"!

With a sweetly mellifluous soprano echoing Blossom Dearie’s lighter-than-air
approach as well as her gift for evocative songwriting, Kat Edmonson is a rare
artist who embodies the spirit of the past while remaining resolutely au courant.
Her unusually charming and seamless blend of old and new has garnered
attention on “NPR Tiny Desk Concerts”, “Austin City Limits”, and “A Prairie Home
Companion”.
The vintage pop and jazz vocalist’s new album Dreamers Do is out February 7,
2020 with a forty-city, U.S. tour to follow. The album blends original
compositions and reimagined mid 20 th century classic Disney songs, and tells a
story which takes place over the course of one sleepless night. Dreamers Do
follows the release of 2018’s Old Fashioned Gal, which Billboard calls “an
intimate journey from doubt to resolve and implied triumph.”

Brian Vander Ark is the lead singer of the Verve Pipe, which became one of Michigan's biggest rock bands of the last decade with songs like the number-one hit "The Freshmen." In 2001 he appeared as part of the band Blood Pollution in the Mark Wahlberg movie "Rock Star." Then he lit out on his own, selling all his possessions and rediscovering his love of performing. He has charisma to spare! On his studio albums, plus several more or less official live releases (an Ark show is a good place to pick up the more obscure items), Brian has taken up personal themes of family, love, and loss. The Grand Rapids Press hails Brian's way of "adroitly meshing acoustic grace with penetrating rock and pop power." Oh, and his name means "of The Ark" in Dutch. If you haven't seen this rock legend's solo show yet, what are you waiting for?

Rainbow Girls are an eclectic trio comprising three unique musical talents—Vanessa May, Erin Chapin, and Caitlin Gowdey—who seamlessly combine heart-wrenching harmonies, emotive guitar work, and poignant lyrical content into an unusually beautiful sonic tapestry. Hailing from the golden countryside just north of California's Bay Area, they make music that delves deeply into themes of the human experience: hopeful love, honest self-reflection, and pursuits of social justice. Their latest album, "American Dream," crystallizes these ideas in acoustic amber, encapsulating a beautiful new direction for their evolving sound. Originally formed in Santa Barbara in 2010, Rainbow Girls have spread their musical wings both internationally and domestically, from busking on the streets of Europe and playing pubs and theaters in the UK, to house concerts, festivals, and shows in the US. Rainbow Girls have also gained recognition on NPR's Tiny Desk concert series and KQED radio's "The California Report."

They write and perform acoustic music for children and families, celebrating with their audiences the warmth, fun, and joy of family life. A Gemini concert is a kinetic event, filled with rousing singalongs, hand motion tunes, folk tales, and music from around the world. "If the Pied Piper had been twins, chances are he would have been Gemini," says the Detroit News. Since 1979 San and Laz have released numerous recordings for adults and children and families. These recordings have won a number of awards including ones from Parents' Choice Magazine, the American Library Association, the National Parenting Publications (NAPPA), and the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts.

Says Lifestyle Nova Scotia: "Cousins writes songs strong on story, melody, and honest observations ... that demand an unaffected but beautiful voice." Her album "We Have Made a Spark" took home a Canadian Juno Award along with many other awards, including a spot on NPR's Top 10 Americana & Folk Albums list. Rose spends part of her time in Boston, where she's found strong support from the city's vibrant songwriting community, but she maintains strong ties to her Canadian roots. Rooted in authenticity and conviction of voice, the songs of Rose Cousins make you feel as though she sings for you, about your life. "We develop patterns that keep us from moving forward," Rose says. "It takes a deep breath and a bucket of courage to face the uncomfortable, painful things we work so hard to avoid. Reward comes from recognizing the obstacle exists and pushing through fear." She comes to Michigan with a new album, "Bravado."

Due to an unforeseen scheduling conflict, Cedric Burnside needs to cancel the April 10th performance and looks forward to returning to The Ark later this year to follow up on an incredible performance at Folk Fest. All ticket holders will receive a refund.

"My school was a juke joint, from a kid till I was grown, and blues is really all I ever known," sings Cedric Burnside on his new album, "Benton County Relic." And it's no wonder. The 39-year-old, though he's just back from a European tour, still lives on several acres not far from the Holly Springs, Mississippi, home where he was raised by "Big Daddy," his grandfather, the late singer/songwriter/guitarist R.L. Burnside, whom Cedric famously played with, just as his own father, drummer Calvin Jackson, did. Cedric was literally born to the blues, more specifically, the rhythmically unorthodox Hill country variant that emerged from Mississippi, where he grew up surrounded (and influenced) by Junior Kimbrough, Jessie May Hemphill, and Otha Turner, as well as Delta musicians T-Model Ford and Paul "Wine" Jones. Cedric has played and recorded with the North Mississippi Allstars (Luther Dickinson gave him his first electric guitar), Widespread Panic, Jimmy Buffett, Bobby Rush, Hubert Sumlin, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears ,and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. But beyond that, he writes from personal experience, and he's bringing traditional blues to a new generation.

Mapache consists of Clay Finch and Sam Blasucci. Born and raised in Glendale, California, the duo offers breathtaking harmonies and a heartfelt sound that they dub cosmic West Coast Pop Americana. We make music that’s reflective of the landscape we grew up with in southern California,” says Clay. "It’s a big sweep of all the really rich influences you encounter around here: folk and psychedelic and country and Latin and rock and cowboy and Hawaiian. We’re drawing from a really deep well." Their sound is not an exercise in pop nostalgia, but rather a distinctly independent link in a chain that stretches far behind and ahead of them. Mapache comes to Michigan with a brand new release, "From Liberty Street."

Join us for the inagural event in the Ark Family Room Series with none other than Steve Poltz!

Saturday April 11th, 8pm Eastern at --> www.facebook.com/TheArkAnnArbor/

In 20 years since his full-length solo debut, One Left Shoe, Steve Poltz blessed the world’s ears with thirteen solo records, spanning the acclaimed 2010 Dreamhouse and most recently, Shine On, in 2019. NPR summed it up best, “Critics and fans alike now regard Poltz as a talented and prolific songwriter.”

Evoking themes of “hope, love, contemplation, celebration of Wednesday, pharmacists, and the fact that windows are not inanimate objects and they sometimes have conversations with each other,” Shine On represents Steve at his most inspired and insightful. The opener and title track pairs a delicate vocal with lithely plucked acoustic strings as he urges everyone to, “Shine on, shine on.”

The John Jorgenson Band, or J2B2 for short, is a bluegrass supergroup featuring four legendary, award-winning musicians—John Jorgenson on acoustic guitar, mandolin and vocals; Herb Pedersen (The Dillards, Desert Rose Band) on banjo, acoustic guitar, and vocals; Mark Fain (Ricky Skaggs' Kentucky Thunder) on bass; and Patrick Sauber ("A Mighty Wind") on acoustic guitar and vocals—delivering bluegrass like no one has ever heard it before. The band's high-powered live shows have received stellar reviews and have the bluegrass world buzzing. The four combine forces to form a spot-on union of impeccable musicianship, incomparable songwriting, incredible harmony vocals (a fresh twist combining bluegrass with elements of West Coast folk rock), and seasoned showmanship. This is the "high lonesome sound" of American roots music at its finest.

Bonded together by the members' common interest in a musically historical and honest sound, Cold Tone Harvest formed in southeast Michigan in late 2008. The band comprises singer/songwriter Andrew Sigworth, bassist Ozzie Andrews, drummer/banjo player Brian Williams, and guitarist Anthony Pace. Their union came to fruition much like the music itself did: formulated with patience and mixed with a rugged determination. The paradoxical name proves itself uncannily fitting, as expertly delivered Americana tropes and soundscapes gradually crack at the seams, revealing a shimmering sliver of something else entirely. Country-infused melodies and rhythms lace with a lush ambience often reserved for the loneliest of instrumental compositions. Rich and rugged baritone vocals, clearly suited to whiskey songs and heartache anthems, instead turn their howls and growls towards brave and poetic lyric territory rarely found in a common folk or bluegrass outing. Cold Tone Harvest rides a rare and beautiful line, delivering a wall of sound that will grab the ear of the rowdiest music festival enthusiasts, partnered with the textual eloquence and deeply layered arrangement that begs for solitary repeat listens. Kate Peterson (of Nervous but Excited) opens.

This Charleston (SC)–based quintet performs timeless music born from the Gullah culture of the southeastern Sea Islands. Their debut album was featured on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross and the Today show. It also soared to the #1 position on the Billboard, Amazon, and iTunes Jazz Charts. Playful game songs, ecstatic shouts, and heartbreaking spirituals can all be found on their latest release, "Good Time," which also offers the group's first original songs inspired by Gullah tradition. Ranky Tanky was nominated for a 2019 Grammy award in the Best Regional Roots Album category, and their live show is a sensation like you haven't seen since The War and Treaty outgrew the Ark stage.

Named among Yahoo Music's "Top 10 Bands to Watch," The Accidentals began their adventure in their hometown of Traverse City, MI, when Katie Larson, a sophomore cellist, and Savannah Buist, a junior violinist, were paired for a high school orchestra event. The gifted young musicians became fast friends and before long, bandmates. Dubbing themselves after the musical notes that fall outside of a key signature, they were joined in 2014 by percussionist Michael Dause, and since then national attention has increasingly come their way. Along the road, where they've performed more than 1,000 shows over the last five years, they been open to and influenced by a dizzying variety of musical genres, from classical music to hip-hop. Signed to the major Sony label in 2017, the band has released two albums, including the recent and politically aware "Heavy Flag."

Nora Jane Struthers has written "some of the most quietly powerful narratives within the new wave of Americana artists," says Ann Powers of NPR Music. The songs that last decades and weave themselves into the fabric of listeners' lives are usually the ones in which an artist lays her soul bare for the world to hear. Nora Jane has built her career on these kinds of songs. There’s an honesty and energy to Nora Jane's stage presence; a vulnerability that is part and parcel of great artistry. In one moment, she joyfully leads the audience in a dance party ... in the next, she lays her soul bare for the world to hear. A performance by Nora Jane and her band is full to the brim with stellar musicianship, unexpected arrangements that blur the lines between folk, roots, and rock, and an audible sense that everyone in the room is having a damn good time. She's got a new album out: "Bright Lights, Long Drives, First Words."

Multi-instrumentalist Rachael Davis is as renown for her expressive--and explosive--voice as she is for uniting the often desperate worlds of folk, blues, country, and pop.

Davis grew up not only in a family of musicians, but in an extended village of remarkable musicians and songwriters who nurtured and mentored her from the time she was born. Beginning by jingling ankle bells in perfect time on her months old feet in the middle of old timey jams and song circles, to contributing newly minted songs to Music Sundays, Rachael has always found her own unique part in the music. Her clear tone and uncanny memory for just about every song she’s ever heard came early, and has served her well throughout her career. As a child Davis took to harmony, piano, and ukulele, and at 8, joined the family band Lake Effect, performing regularly at folk festivals throughout her home state of Michigan and around the U.S. By age 12, and continuing each year since, Rachael has brought the Wheatland Music Festival to its knees closing the Sunday morning gospel set with her stunning solo acapella version of Amazing Grace.

Says Todd Snider of Chicago Farmer: "I love Chicago Farmer's singing and playing and songs, but it's the intention behind the whole of his work that moves me to consider him the genuine heir to Arlo Guthrie or Ramblin' Jack Elliott. He knows the shell game that goes on under folk music … which is sacred to me. Chicago Farmer is my brother; if you like me, you'll love him." Chicago Farmer is Cody Diekhoff, who came from the Illinois farming community of Delavan. Many of his songs are in the Woody Guthrie vein, populist as well as autobiographical. Cody logged plenty of highway and stage time under the name Chicago Farmer (originally the name of a group) before settling in the city in 2003. He listened to punk rock and grunge as a kid before discovering a friend's dad playing Hank Williams, and it was a revelation. Profoundly inspired as well by fellow Mwesterner John Prine, he's a working-class folk musician to his core. Cody writes music for the "kind of people that come to my shows. Whether in Chicago or Delavan, everyone has a story, and everyone puts in a long day and works hard the same way," he says.

Porter's acoustic guitar skills have drawn comparisons with those of Leo Kottke, who drew the young Willy Porter into music the first time he heard the "6 & 12 String Guitar" album. He continues to stretch each show by incorporating performance art, live audio looping, and improvisational sketch comedy. Each Willy Porter show becomes a unique event, a musical experience much greater than just a review of past, present, and future recorded work. Willy was MC of the 2020 Ann Arbor Folk Festival, and we're looking forward to hearing him from the comfort of his own home. In addition to benefiting both Willy and The Ark, a portion of donations for tonight's show will be given to support the work of Food Gatherers.

Natalia Zukerman, the daughter of classical musicians Eugenia and Pinchas Zukerman, found her musical self when she took up slide guitar. You can call her songs folk music if you like, but there's jazz there too, and some sultry blues. She's a real triple threat who combines a unique slide guitar sound with some extremely seductive vocals and fresh original songs that tie everything together into a real, honest whole. Says Andy Friedman of the New Yorker of Natalia's multiple talents: "Natalia's voice could send an orchid into bloom while her guitar playing can open a beer bottle with its teeth."

Says the Irish Examiner: "Peter Mulvey is one of the most accomplished guitarists you're ever likely to hear...utterly original...it is nigh on impossible to explain him to the uninitiated...his intelligent and sometimes complex songs engage both hemispheres of the listener's brain." Peter grew up in Milwaukee, made his debut on the streets of Dublin, and moved to Boston, performing in subways and, finally, clubs. His latest album was produced by Ani DiFranco, whom he befriended when she added a verse to his song "Take Down Your Flag," about the shootings at the AME Emanuel Church in Charleston, South Carolina. "I heard a young folksinger at a festival last summer sing a line about how our job is to sing the people through, and I think that young man is right as rain," Peter says. "I'm doing my best." Peter returns from his MC slot at the 2019 Ann Arbor Folk Festival with a new album, "There is Another World."

As a contingent of the Michigan folk music scene for over a decade, Misty Lyn has penned haunting melodies over simple arrangements that traverse the gothic, literary fringes of American roots music. Pulling from a wealth of vivid subject matter, her songs are cathartic and poetically rich works that approach sometimes difficult topics such as death, loss, heartache, and healing. After getting in a serious car accident in 2015, there has been a noticeable shift toward love, light, and hope in her music, while still maintaining a deep connection with the things that are lost and those that are fading.

Stolen Silver is the musical culmination of a decade-long friendship between songwriters Levi Britton and Dan Myers. It's a union that dates back to their days as roommates in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood, one that entails a history as previous touring bandmates, collaborators and, most importantly, singers. Their voices are instruments, seemingly effortless and vital to their mutual craft. on the stage, where ideas are fresh and nothing is left unattempted. Their styles swerve along a spectrum that spans from indie folk to Americana, from pop-rock to more explorative soundtrack moments where the spaces in the songs are equally important to their narrative, undoubtedly due to Myers’ work as a film composer. Praise and momentum for this band continue to build. Their hard work has delivered headlining bills at LA's Hotel Cafe and Chicago's renowned venues Hideout, Empty Bottle, Ravinia and Schuba's. Stolen Silver comes to Michigan with a new EP, "Sanctuary Sessions," recorded and filmed live in a 200-year-old gothic cathedral in central Wisconsin.

The Washington Post calls John's concerts "little feats of magic," and as a storyteller he's been compared with Garrison Keillor-and, even better than that, Will Rogers.

Rebecca Loebe has built a fervent grass-roots following performing an average of 150 concerts per year in over 40 states and 15 countries. Now join Rebecca as she celebrates the 10-year anniversary of her breakthrough album, "Mystery Prize." In this intimate, acoustic concert tour she'll revisit songs and stories from the album that spent ten weeks on the Americana Top 40 chart and launched her international touring career with a European record deal and an invitation to appear on the first season of NBC’s "The Voice."

The message that Brooklyn singer/songwriter Jesse Ruben has been spreading through his music is simple and direct: I can. You can. We Can. When Jesse originally wrote his song "We Can," he had just run the NYC Marathon and hoped to inspire people to start running. As it turns out, his message was meant to be much more universal. A few months after he released the track, a Vancouver elementary school reached out, saying they had been playing it to inspire their students. They asked Jesse to fly in and perform the song for their school, and so began "The We Can Project," which was inspired by the artist's own struggles with Lyme disease and now spreads across North America. Jesse began touring the country, visiting schools and helping students come up with personal goals and ways to give back to their community.

She has also written and performed songs for several major motion pictures, including the lead song ("Going Home") for the Civil War epic "Gods and Generals." Mary's elegant, cinematic songs draw on classical and world music sources, American art song, as well as thinking man's folk-pop she performs with an earthy, viscerally powerful contralto. Listen to their timeless renditions of hard-driving Appalachian, Cajun and Celtic fiddle tunes, stirring Civil War classics, sassy songs from the golden age of swing and country, stunning waltzes, and deeply moving original compositions-and you'll find a pair of musicians who put on a great show and have a lifelong love for the music they make. Says Geoffrey Himes of Amazon.com: "Jay Ungar ... is almost without peer as a composer of fiddle tunes. [He is] blessed with that rare knack for making his melodies move in ways that stir the listener's longings."

Chris melds the styles of his two major influences, Lightnin' Hopkins and Mississippi John Hurt, into his own signature guitar sound. His music continues to draw deeply from the blues, American folk music, modern poets, and humanist philosophers. Chris may be best known for writing "Love You Like A Man," which Bonnie Raitt and more recently Kelly Clarkson have covered. Michael McDermott burst onto the scene in his early 20s with his exceptional debut, "620 W. Surf," and subsequently found himself touted as Rock’s Next Big Thing. The missteps and failures that followed, the collapse of an industry that once embraced him as its next sensation, are troubles and travails that either ruin a person completely, or force a change of attitude and staunch determination to gather one’s resolve to not only survive, but overcome. Michael's 11th studio album, "Out From Under," brims with richly autobiographical songs that mix stunning frankness with wicked, idiosyncratic humor. It’s the sound of a clear-eyed, dedicated artist, now a contented husband and father, giving in to his heart’s most urgent commands and trusting his instincts in ways he never thought possible.

It's an exploration of the dark corners of life's journey and it resonates middle class truths through the passionate filter of a kid that grew up on Chicago's Irish South Side. With an earnest ability to create a delicate balance of harmony, melody, deep emotion and subtlety, Lee DeWyze’s depth as a songwriter call to mind some of his earliest influences like Simon and Garfunkel, Yusef Islam (Cat Stevens ) and Johnny Cash.

On Castles, his latest EP (10.25.19) which has garnered over 600k streams to date, this becomes clear to all who truly listen. There are no false notes in these three exquisite songs, each one a unique light in the constellation of his imagination. He sings quietly, as if whispering secrets. His lyrics and melodies mesmerize, cycling like nursery rhymes, somehow soothing while also sharpening our alertness that something unusual is going on here.

Over the last 10 years, Lee has released five albums, including his critically lauded Frames (Vanguard Records, 2013), which included the top 40 Billboard Hot AC hit “Fight.” In 2014, his song “Blackbird Song” was placed in the show “The Walking Dead.” After signing with Shanachie Records in 2016, Lee released the album Oil and Water, which hit Number One on the iTunes folk and singer/songwriter chart, followed by Paranoia (2018), which hit Number One on the Alternative chart. As the winner of American Idol Season 9 in 2010, he made his major-label debut with Live It Up (RCA)

Oshima Brothers' music fuses songwriting with production, engineering, multi-instrumentalism, and filmmaking. Their two albums and many videos were made mostly in their home studio in Maine. Oshima Brothers made their local debut at The Ark's Art Fair Stage in 2019.

Louisiana-born, New England–educated guitarist and singer-songwriter Corey Harris carries forward songs of the blues tradition while creating an original vision of the blues by adding influences from reggae, soul, rock and West African music. Awarded a MacArthur "Genius Award" Fellowship in 2007, he is a truly unique voice in contemporary music with one foot in tradition and the other in contemporary experimentation. Corey recently returned to the road and the studio with great new material, and we're glad to hear the latest from this artist in the Family Room—those who've been around The Ark for a while will remember the memorable shows he did at the club in the 1990s and 2000.

Named by VH1 as one of the 30 greatest women in rock (we'd put her in an even smaller group), Rickie Lee Jones has been hard to classify ever since she came on the scene with the instant classic "Chuck E.'s in Love" in 1979. She's performed straight jazz, blues, synth pop, new wave rock, pop covers, trip-hop, gospel, ambitious singer-songwriter music, and more, putting her unique spin on each style. Each new round of music-making activity by Rickie Lee Jones is different. But a few things remain the same: she's at her best in an intimate space—like The Ark— and her live concerts have almost without exception been unforgettable experiences over her more than 30 years of performing. Rickie Lee Jones comes to Michigan with music from "Kicks," an upcoming collection presenting her unique and sophisticated interpretations of pop, rock, and jazz from the 1950s through the 1970s.

"I felt a call to begin to write music but I was confused because I'd never done that before. When I said, 'I can't play an instrument, Lord,' He said, 'Get a guitar...' and here we are today!" I guess my genre depends on who’s listening. My pantheon is Bob Marley, Tupac Shakur (2Pac) and Michael Jackson. But if I had to pick one, it would forever be Marley." AHI has backpacked across Ethiopia, Trinidad, and Ontario, and he was recently featured on an NPR Tiny Desk Concert. He has one unbreakable rule for his songwriting: he has to be able to see himself—and some truth—in his songs.

The East Pointers—fiddler/singer Tim Chaisson, banjoist Koady Chaisson and guitarist Jake Charron—write about real life, sketching out its joys and sorrows in vivid strokes. That palpable authenticity makes their instrumental tunes practically cartwheel and infuses their lyric-driven songs with poignancy. As a follow-up to 2015's internationally acclaimed, JUNO Award-winning debut "Secret Victory," their new "What We Leave Behind" shares stories previously unheard but framed by a familiar context. The album reflects on the traditions of Canadian Celtic music, where it comes from, and what it means to the people, but also strides in new directions. With a captivating balance between their traditional-sounding instrumental tunes, and catchy radio-ready songs, The East Pointers reach out with open arms to a wide range of listeners, inviting them to discover a new love of folk music. They come to Michigan with a new release, "Yours to Break."

Singer-songwriter David Berkeley has been compared to both Cat and Sufjian Stevens as well as a host of other literate songwriters and he comes to the Ark Family Room with his most intimate and poignant release yet, Oh Quiet World, written during the lockdown after his family escaped Spain due to Corona. “I wrote a song a day that first week back,” Berkeley explains. “Songwriting gave me a way to process my fears and frustrations. It gave me a purpose, something small I could contribute.” David Berkeley’s gift as a songwriter and storyteller is that he sees both the tragedy and comedy in life, managing to both reveal the sorrow and the blazing beauty at the heart of the human condition. It’s a duality that audiences experience at all of Berkeley’s shows as well, as he tells uproarious stories between cathartic songs.
