Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

Due to an unforeseen scheduling conflict, Cedric Burnside needs to cancel the April 10th performance and looks forward to returning to The Ark later this year to follow up on an incredible performance at Folk Fest. All ticket holders will receive a refund.

"My school was a juke joint, from a kid till I was grown, and blues is really all I ever known," sings Cedric Burnside on his new album, "Benton County Relic." And it's no wonder. The 39-year-old, though he's just back from a European tour, still lives on several acres not far from the Holly Springs, Mississippi, home where he was raised by "Big Daddy," his grandfather, the late singer/songwriter/guitarist R.L. Burnside, whom Cedric famously played with, just as his own father, drummer Calvin Jackson, did. Cedric was literally born to the blues, more specifically, the rhythmically unorthodox Hill country variant that emerged from Mississippi, where he grew up surrounded (and influenced) by Junior Kimbrough, Jessie May Hemphill, and Otha Turner, as well as Delta musicians T-Model Ford and Paul "Wine" Jones. Cedric has played and recorded with the North Mississippi Allstars (Luther Dickinson gave him his first electric guitar), Widespread Panic, Jimmy Buffett, Bobby Rush, Hubert Sumlin, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears ,and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. But beyond that, he writes from personal experience, and he's bringing traditional blues to a new generation.

Mapache consists of Clay Finch and Sam Blasucci. Born and raised in Glendale, California, the duo offers breathtaking harmonies and a heartfelt sound that they dub cosmic West Coast Pop Americana. We make music that’s reflective of the landscape we grew up with in southern California,” says Clay. "It’s a big sweep of all the really rich influences you encounter around here: folk and psychedelic and country and Latin and rock and cowboy and Hawaiian. We’re drawing from a really deep well." Their sound is not an exercise in pop nostalgia, but rather a distinctly independent link in a chain that stretches far behind and ahead of them. Mapache comes to Michigan with a brand new release, "From Liberty Street."

Saturday April 11th, 8pm Eastern at --> www.facebook.com/TheArkAnnArbor/

In 20 years since his full-length solo debut, One Left Shoe, Steve Poltz blessed the world’s ears with thirteen solo records, spanning the acclaimed 2010 Dreamhouse and most recently, Shine On, in 2019. NPR summed it up best, “Critics and fans alike now regard Poltz as a talented and prolific songwriter.”

Evoking themes of “hope, love, contemplation, celebration of Wednesday, pharmacists, and the fact that windows are not inanimate objects and they sometimes have conversations with each other,” Shine On represents Steve at his most inspired and insightful. The opener and title track pairs a delicate vocal with lithely plucked acoustic strings as he urges everyone to, “Shine on, shine on.”

The John Jorgenson Band, or J2B2 for short, is a bluegrass supergroup featuring four legendary, award-winning musicians—John Jorgenson on acoustic guitar, mandolin and vocals; Herb Pedersen (The Dillards, Desert Rose Band) on banjo, acoustic guitar, and vocals; Mark Fain (Ricky Skaggs' Kentucky Thunder) on bass; and Patrick Sauber ("A Mighty Wind") on acoustic guitar and vocals—delivering bluegrass like no one has ever heard it before. The band's high-powered live shows have received stellar reviews and have the bluegrass world buzzing. The four combine forces to form a spot-on union of impeccable musicianship, incomparable songwriting, incredible harmony vocals (a fresh twist combining bluegrass with elements of West Coast folk rock), and seasoned showmanship. This is the "high lonesome sound" of American roots music at its finest.

Bonded together by the members' common interest in a musically historical and honest sound, Cold Tone Harvest formed in southeast Michigan in late 2008. The band comprises singer/songwriter Andrew Sigworth, bassist Ozzie Andrews, drummer/banjo player Brian Williams, and guitarist Anthony Pace. Their union came to fruition much like the music itself did: formulated with patience and mixed with a rugged determination. The paradoxical name proves itself uncannily fitting, as expertly delivered Americana tropes and soundscapes gradually crack at the seams, revealing a shimmering sliver of something else entirely. Country-infused melodies and rhythms lace with a lush ambience often reserved for the loneliest of instrumental compositions. Rich and rugged baritone vocals, clearly suited to whiskey songs and heartache anthems, instead turn their howls and growls towards brave and poetic lyric territory rarely found in a common folk or bluegrass outing. Cold Tone Harvest rides a rare and beautiful line, delivering a wall of sound that will grab the ear of the rowdiest music festival enthusiasts, partnered with the textual eloquence and deeply layered arrangement that begs for solitary repeat listens. Kate Peterson (of Nervous but Excited) opens.

This Charleston (SC)–based quintet performs timeless music born from the Gullah culture of the southeastern Sea Islands. Their debut album was featured on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross and the Today show. It also soared to the #1 position on the Billboard, Amazon, and iTunes Jazz Charts. Playful game songs, ecstatic shouts, and heartbreaking spirituals can all be found on their latest release, "Good Time," which also offers the group's first original songs inspired by Gullah tradition. Ranky Tanky was nominated for a 2019 Grammy award in the Best Regional Roots Album category, and their live show is a sensation like you haven't seen since The War and Treaty outgrew the Ark stage.

Named among Yahoo Music's "Top 10 Bands to Watch," The Accidentals began their adventure in their hometown of Traverse City, MI, when Katie Larson, a sophomore cellist, and Savannah Buist, a junior violinist, were paired for a high school orchestra event. The gifted young musicians became fast friends and before long, bandmates. Dubbing themselves after the musical notes that fall outside of a key signature, they were joined in 2014 by percussionist Michael Dause, and since then national attention has increasingly come their way. Along the road, where they've performed more than 1,000 shows over the last five years, they been open to and influenced by a dizzying variety of musical genres, from classical music to hip-hop. Signed to the major Sony label in 2017, the band has released two albums, including the recent and politically aware "Heavy Flag."

Nora Jane Struthers has written "some of the most quietly powerful narratives within the new wave of Americana artists," says Ann Powers of NPR Music. The songs that last decades and weave themselves into the fabric of listeners' lives are usually the ones in which an artist lays her soul bare for the world to hear. Nora Jane has built her career on these kinds of songs. There’s an honesty and energy to Nora Jane's stage presence; a vulnerability that is part and parcel of great artistry. In one moment, she joyfully leads the audience in a dance party ... in the next, she lays her soul bare for the world to hear. A performance by Nora Jane and her band is full to the brim with stellar musicianship, unexpected arrangements that blur the lines between folk, roots, and rock, and an audible sense that everyone in the room is having a damn good time. She's got a new album out: "Bright Lights, Long Drives, First Words."

Multi-instrumentalist Rachael Davis is as renown for her expressive--and explosive--voice as she is for uniting the often desperate worlds of folk, blues, country, and pop.

Davis grew up not only in a family of musicians, but in an extended village of remarkable musicians and songwriters who nurtured and mentored her from the time she was born. Beginning by jingling ankle bells in perfect time on her months old feet in the middle of old timey jams and song circles, to contributing newly minted songs to Music Sundays, Rachael has always found her own unique part in the music. Her clear tone and uncanny memory for just about every song she’s ever heard came early, and has served her well throughout her career. As a child Davis took to harmony, piano, and ukulele, and at 8, joined the family band Lake Effect, performing regularly at folk festivals throughout her home state of Michigan and around the U.S. By age 12, and continuing each year since, Rachael has brought the Wheatland Music Festival to its knees closing the Sunday morning gospel set with her stunning solo acapella version of Amazing Grace.

Says Todd Snider of Chicago Farmer: "I love Chicago Farmer's singing and playing and songs, but it's the intention behind the whole of his work that moves me to consider him the genuine heir to Arlo Guthrie or Ramblin' Jack Elliott. He knows the shell game that goes on under folk music … which is sacred to me. Chicago Farmer is my brother; if you like me, you'll love him." Chicago Farmer is Cody Diekhoff, who came from the Illinois farming community of Delavan. Many of his songs are in the Woody Guthrie vein, populist as well as autobiographical. Cody logged plenty of highway and stage time under the name Chicago Farmer (originally the name of a group) before settling in the city in 2003. He listened to punk rock and grunge as a kid before discovering a friend's dad playing Hank Williams, and it was a revelation. Profoundly inspired as well by fellow Mwesterner John Prine, he's a working-class folk musician to his core. Cody writes music for the "kind of people that come to my shows. Whether in Chicago or Delavan, everyone has a story, and everyone puts in a long day and works hard the same way," he says.

In planning this tour, San Fermin thought it would be cool to highlight this aspect of the music, stripping down the instrumental arrangements and allowing the singers to take center stage. Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

Spend an evening with Willy Porter, and you'll experience a rare communion between artist and audience. His concerts are one-of-a-kind events in which amazing guitar chops and songwriting merge into a single unit. Porter's acoustic guitar skills have drawn comparisons with those of Leo Kottke, who drew the young Willy Porter into music the first time he heard the "6 & 12 String Guitar" album. He continues to stretch each show by incorporating performance art, live audio looping, and improvisational sketch comedy. Each Willy Porter show becomes a unique event, a musical experience much greater than just a review of past, present, and future recorded work. Willy was MC of the 2020 Ann Arbor Folk Festival, and we're looking forward to hearing him from the comfort of his own home. In addition to benefiting both Willy and The Ark, a portion of donations for tonight's show will be given to support the work of Food Gatherers.

Natalia Zukerman, the daughter of classical musicians Eugenia and Pinchas Zukerman, found her musical self when she took up slide guitar. You can call her songs folk music if you like, but there's jazz there too, and some sultry blues. She's a real triple threat who combines a unique slide guitar sound with some extremely seductive vocals and fresh original songs that tie everything together into a real, honest whole. Says Andy Friedman of the New Yorker of Natalia's multiple talents: "Natalia's voice could send an orchid into bloom while her guitar playing can open a beer bottle with its teeth."

To call Peter Mulvey an acoustic singer-songwriter and guitarist just doesn't cover it. He's equally-and tremendously on all counts-gifted as a singer, writer, and guitarist. Says the Irish Examiner: "Peter Mulvey is one of the most accomplished guitarists you're ever likely to hear...utterly original...it is nigh on impossible to explain him to the uninitiated...his intelligent and sometimes complex songs engage both hemispheres of the listener's brain." Peter grew up in Milwaukee, made his debut on the streets of Dublin, and moved to Boston, performing in subways and, finally, clubs. His latest album was produced by Ani DiFranco, whom he befriended when she added a verse to his song "Take Down Your Flag," about the shootings at the AME Emanuel Church in Charleston, South Carolina. "I heard a young folksinger at a festival last summer sing a line about how our job is to sing the people through, and I think that young man is right as rain," Peter says. "I'm doing my best." Peter returns from his MC slot at the 2019 Ann Arbor Folk Festival with a new album, "There is Another World."

Pulling from a wealth of vivid subject matter, her songs are cathartic and poetically rich works that approach sometimes difficult topics such as death, loss, heartache, and healing. After getting in a serious car accident in 2015, there has been a noticeable shift toward love, light, and hope in her music, while still maintaining a deep connection with the things that are lost and those that are fading.

Stolen Silver is the musical culmination of a decade-long friendship between songwriters Levi Britton and Dan Myers. It's a union that dates back to their days as roommates in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood, one that entails a history as previous touring bandmates, collaborators and, most importantly, singers. Their voices are instruments, seemingly effortless and vital to their mutual craft. on the stage, where ideas are fresh and nothing is left unattempted. Their styles swerve along a spectrum that spans from indie folk to Americana, from pop-rock to more explorative soundtrack moments where the spaces in the songs are equally important to their narrative, undoubtedly due to Myers’ work as a film composer. Praise and momentum for this band continue to build. Their hard work has delivered headlining bills at LA's Hotel Cafe and Chicago's renowned venues Hideout, Empty Bottle, Ravinia and Schuba's. Stolen Silver comes to Michigan with a new EP, "Sanctuary Sessions," recorded and filmed live in a 200-year-old gothic cathedral in central Wisconsin.

Rebecca Loebe has built a fervent grass-roots following performing an average of 150 concerts per year in over 40 states and 15 countries. Now join Rebecca as she celebrates the 10-year anniversary of her breakthrough album, "Mystery Prize." In this intimate, acoustic concert tour she'll revisit songs and stories from the album that spent ten weeks on the Americana Top 40 chart and launched her international touring career with a European record deal and an invitation to appear on the first season of NBC’s "The Voice."

The message that Brooklyn singer/songwriter Jesse Ruben has been spreading through his music is simple and direct: I can. You can. We Can. When Jesse originally wrote his song "We Can," he had just run the NYC Marathon and hoped to inspire people to start running. As it turns out, his message was meant to be much more universal. A few months after he released the track, a Vancouver elementary school reached out, saying they had been playing it to inspire their students. They asked Jesse to fly in and perform the song for their school, and so began "The We Can Project," which was inspired by the artist's own struggles with Lyme disease and now spreads across North America. Jesse began touring the country, visiting schools and helping students come up with personal goals and ways to give back to their community.

People all over the world think of the haunting "Ashokan Farewell," from the Ken Burns PBS series The Civil War, as an American folk song. But it's actually the creation of fiddler Jay Ungar and guitarist Molly Mason, musical partners since the 1970s and a marital duo since 1991. And "Ashokan Farewell" is just a small part of what they do. Listen to their timeless renditions of hard-driving Appalachian, Cajun and Celtic fiddle tunes, stirring Civil War classics, sassy songs from the golden age of swing and country, stunning waltzes, and deeply moving original compositions-and you'll find a pair of musicians who put on a great show and have a lifelong love for the music they make. Says Geoffrey Himes of Amazon.com: "Jay Ungar ... is almost without peer as a composer of fiddle tunes. [He is] blessed with that rare knack for making his melodies move in ways that stir the listener's longings."

Michael McDermott burst onto the scene in his early 20s with his exceptional debut, "620 W. Surf," and subsequently found himself touted as Rock’s Next Big Thing. The missteps and failures that followed, the collapse of an industry that once embraced him as its next sensation, are troubles and travails that either ruin a person completely, or force a change of attitude and staunch determination to gather one’s resolve to not only survive, but overcome. Michael's 11th studio album, "Out From Under," brims with richly autobiographical songs that mix stunning frankness with wicked, idiosyncratic humor. It’s the sound of a clear-eyed, dedicated artist, now a contented husband and father, giving in to his heart’s most urgent commands and trusting his instincts in ways he never thought possible.

It's an exploration of the dark corners of life's journey and it resonates middle class truths through the passionate filter of a kid that grew up on Chicago's Irish South Side. If you are a fan of Springsteen, Van Morrison, John Steinbeck, Patti Smith, Michael McDermott's inspirational rock is in your wheelhouse, waiting late night with a guitar, spare smokes and stories of the American heart.

With an earnest ability to create a delicate balance of harmony, melody, deep emotion and subtlety, Lee DeWyze’s depth as a songwriter call to mind some of his earliest influences like Simon and Garfunkel, Yusef Islam (Cat Stevens ) and Johnny Cash.

On Castles, his latest EP (10.25.19) which has garnered over 600k streams to date, this becomes clear to all who truly listen. There are no false notes in these three exquisite songs, each one a unique light in the constellation of his imagination. He sings quietly, as if whispering secrets. His lyrics and melodies mesmerize, cycling like nursery rhymes, somehow soothing while also sharpening our alertness that something unusual is going on here.

Over the last 10 years, Lee has released five albums, including his critically lauded Frames (Vanguard Records, 2013), which included the top 40 Billboard Hot AC hit “Fight.” In 2014, his song “Blackbird Song” was placed in the show “The Walking Dead.” After signing with Shanachie Records in 2016, Lee released the album Oil and Water, which hit Number One on the iTunes folk and singer/songwriter chart, followed by Paranoia (2018), which hit Number One on the Alternative chart. On a musical journey that began in 1982, Annie and Rod Capps have earned sincere praise for their songwriting and musicianship, with two albums topping the Folk DJ charts, multiple Detroit Music Award nominations, and as two-time Kerrville New Folk Finalists (2010 & 2012). Defining their "style" is not easy. It never ceases to be a moving target as they work continually to evolve with surprising new influences and inspirations, always striving for true musical and songwriting maturity. Nonetheless, for well over 30 years they've been cultivating a symbiotic sound that reflects their deep and intuitive understanding of each other, delivering songs about broken things and poignant little ponderings with a rootsy vibe, a touch of twang and a soulful groove.

Raised in a musical family in rural Maine, these brothers have honed a harmony-rich blend of contemporary folk and acoustic pop. On stage, Sean and Jamie create a surprisingly full sound with dynamic vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, octave bass, loops, and percussion. The brothers live in Maine but are often on the road performing, producing music videos, and dancing. Oshima Brothers' music fuses songwriting with production, engineering, multi-instrumentalism, and filmmaking. Their two albums and many videos were made mostly in their home studio in Maine. Oshima Brothers made their local debut at The Ark's Art Fair Stage in 2019.

Louisiana-born, New England–educated guitarist and singer-songwriter Corey Harris carries forward songs of the blues tradition while creating an original vision of the blues by adding influences from reggae, soul, rock and West African music. Awarded a MacArthur "Genius Award" Fellowship in 2007, he is a truly unique voice in contemporary music with one foot in tradition and the other in contemporary experimentation. Corey recently returned to the road and the studio with great new material, and we're glad to hear the latest from this artist in the Family Room—those who've been around The Ark for a while will remember the memorable shows he did at the club in the 1990s and 2000.

Named by VH1 as one of the 30 greatest women in rock (we'd put her in an even smaller group), Rickie Lee Jones has been hard to classify ever since she came on the scene with the instant classic "Chuck E.'s in Love" in 1979. She's performed straight jazz, blues, synth pop, new wave rock, pop covers, trip-hop, gospel, ambitious singer-songwriter music, and more, putting her unique spin on each style. Each new round of music-making activity by Rickie Lee Jones is different. But a few things remain the same: she's at her best in an intimate space—like The Ark— and her live concerts have almost without exception been unforgettable experiences over her more than 30 years of performing. Rickie Lee Jones comes to Michigan with music from "Kicks," an upcoming collection presenting her unique and sophisticated interpretations of pop, rock, and jazz from the 1950s through the 1970s.

Brian Vander Ark is the lead singer of the Verve Pipe, which became one of Michigan's biggest rock bands of the last decade with songs like the number-one hit "The Freshmen." In 2001 he appeared as part of the band Blood Pollution in the Mark Wahlberg movie "Rock Star." Then he lit out on his own, selling all his possessions and rediscovering his love of performing. He has charisma to spare! On his studio albums, plus several more or less official live releases (an Ark show is a good place to pick up the more obscure items), Brian has taken up personal themes of family, love, and loss. The Grand Rapids Press hails Brian's way of "adroitly meshing acoustic grace with penetrating rock and pop power." Oh, and his name means "of The Ark" in Dutch. If you haven't seen this rock legend's solo show yet, what are you waiting for?

"I felt a call to begin to write music but I was confused because I'd never done that before. When I said, 'I can't play an instrument, Lord,' He said, 'Get a guitar...' and here we are today!" I guess my genre depends on who’s listening. My pantheon is Bob Marley, Tupac Shakur (2Pac) and Michael Jackson. But if I had to pick one, it would forever be Marley." AHI has backpacked across Ethiopia, Trinidad, and Ontario, and he was recently featured on an NPR Tiny Desk Concert. The East Pointers—fiddler/singer Tim Chaisson, banjoist Koady Chaisson and guitarist Jake Charron—write about real life, sketching out its joys and sorrows in vivid strokes. That palpable authenticity makes their instrumental tunes practically cartwheel and infuses their lyric-driven songs with poignancy. As a follow-up to 2015's internationally acclaimed, JUNO Award-winning debut "Secret Victory," their new "What We Leave Behind" shares stories previously unheard but framed by a familiar context. The album reflects on the traditions of Canadian Celtic music, where it comes from, and what it means to the people, but also strides in new directions. With a captivating balance between their traditional-sounding instrumental tunes, and catchy radio-ready songs, The East Pointers reach out with open arms to a wide range of listeners, inviting them to discover a new love of folk music. They come to Michigan with a new release, "Yours to Break."

Singer-songwriter David Berkeley has been compared to both Cat and Sufjian Stevens as well as a host of other literate songwriters and he comes to the Ark Family Room with his most intimate and poignant release yet, Oh Quiet World, written during the lockdown after his family escaped Spain due to Corona. “I wrote a song a day that first week back,” Berkeley explains. “Songwriting gave me a way to process my fears and frustrations. It gave me a purpose, something small I could contribute.” David Berkeley’s gift as a songwriter and storyteller is that he sees both the tragedy and comedy in life, managing to both reveal the sorrow and the blazing beauty at the heart of the human condition. It’s a duality that audiences experience at all of Berkeley’s shows as well, as he tells uproarious stories between cathartic songs.

"Are You Gone?"—the first new album in a decade from Canada's Sarah Harmer—is a deeply personal and momentous collection of songs motivated by the beauty of life, the urgency of climate crisis, and the question of loss. The first song, "New Low," is more than a return to music for the internationally celebrated singer-songwriter and activist: it is a definition of form, a call for uprising in the face of global disaster, at the most critical moment for Harmer to raise her voice, one of the most distinctive in Canadian music. The vitality of Sarah's new music belies the passage of time since Harmer’s last record, "Oh Little Fire" (2010). Nearly twenty years from the release of her debut, "You Were Here" (2000), "Are You Gone" brings a close to Sarah's period of musical quietude with a rousing artistic statement, rich in detail and emotion, from the heart and for the spirit. This is Sarah Harmer's first appearance at the The Ark in some years, so come and check out this important new statement from a Canadian favorite.

"Ain't we all the stars playing the leading part in our own soap opera?" Brandy Clark belts out that question to kick off Big Day in a Small Town, positing the premise of not just the opening track ("Soap Opera"), but all 10 songs that follow it. The towns that anchor Clark's new album may be small enough to warrant only a single blinking light, but the lives lived in them are anything but... and neither are the hopes and dreams that rise from their backroads and bedrooms.

When you grow up in a small town, oftentimes, your dreams are all you have. Whether it's to become a football star or a father, a homecoming queen or a hairdresser, your dreams might be the only thing that keep you going. For Clark, the dream she harbored in her small hometown of Morton, Washington, was to be a country singer. Sure, once she moved to Nashville, she had successful cuts as a songwriter [The Band Perry's "Better Dig Two," Miranda Lambert's "Mama's Broken Heart," and Kacey Musgraves' "Follow Your Arrow" which won the CMA Song of the Year Award in 2014], but being an artist in her own right was a dream she had stopped dreaming until three years ago when her first album, the stunning 12 Stories, debuted.

At the time, it was a passion project, more than anything... a passion project that went on to become a GRAMMY- and CMA-nominated release that topped a myriad of "Best Albums of 2013" lists; earn her opening slots on tours with Eric Church, Jennifer Nettles, and Alan Jackson; land her performances onThe Ellen DeGeneres Show , Good Morning America, The Late Show with David Letterman, and a much-talked about collaboration with Dwight Yoakam on the 2015 GRAMMY Awards in recognition of her nomination in the all-genre Best New Artist category; and win her a Warner Records deal. Now, as she gears up for her sophomore set, the alternately feisty and poignant Big Day in a Small Town, Clark has much higher hopes.

"When I made 12 Stories, I think my dreams were a lot more realistic, in that I didn't expect a lot to happen... then it did," she says. "This time, my dreams are very much what they were when I was going to Vince Gill and Patty Loveless concerts and decided I was going to move to Nashville. Right now, my dreams are as big as when I was naïve enough to really dream them."

Produced by Jay Joyce [Little Big Town, Eric Church], Big Day in a Small Town tells the stories of the football star, the father, the homecoming queen, and the hairdresser because those are the stories and people that Clark grew up knowing. "All these songs, there's some little truth in them, somewhere, that resonates with me or that is about me," she confesses. Explaining the genesis of "Soap Opera," she offers, "When I would get worried about what people thought of me or what was going on with me, my mom would always say, 'You know, we're all the star of our daytime drama. We're just bit players in someone else's. Nobody cares that much about what's going on with you. They'll only care until there's something juicier going on with somebody else two weeks later.'"

But Clark cares enough about all of these characters to tell their stories: the aging beauty of "Homecoming Queen" who wonders what happened to the life she always wanted... the tempted exes of "You Can Come Over" who do all they can to not get burned by the flame that flickers between them... the heartbroken heroine of "Daughter" who wishes a bit of karmic justice on her ex in the form of a daughter who's "just as sweet as she is hot"... the defiant wild child of "Girl Next Door" who refuses to fit her lover's misguided notion of womanhood.

"'Homecoming Queen' is really real for me — I know that girl. 'You Can Come Over' is very real for me and 'Daughter' and 'Soap Opera'..." Clark's voice trails off as she thinks about the tales she tells. What about "Drinkin' Smokin' Cheatin'" with its pondering of ways to navigate the sometimes rocky waters of a relationship? Game plan? Wish list? "That's a total daydream," she says with a laugh. "I think we all have that daydream."

One of the most heartfelt moments on Big Day in a Small Town is the one that closes it, "Since You've Gone to Heaven." The song addresses the aftermath of losing someone close to you and it's one that Clark has wanted — and attempted — to write for years. "My dad was killed in a work accident the July before 9/11," she says. "When all that 9/11 stuff was going on and everyone was glued to the TV ... I thought right then, 'Since you've gone to heaven, the whole world has gone to hell.' But I sat on it for years and years because it seemed so bleak." As with all of Clark's compositions, there's some truth in it, just not necessarily the whole truth. "It's definitely not the story of my family in that song. I'll stress that," she says. "But I do think, a lot of times, when somebody dies, it blows things apart more than it brings things together."

While the lyrical themes echo those of 12 Stories, Clark pushed her vocal and musical boundaries on Big Day in a Small Town. Instead of building the songs from a simple guitar/vocal performance, Joyce brought the players in for five days of rehearsals before tracking live with the band. "A lot of those rehearsals became what the record was," Clark says, explaining that the recorded version of "You Can Come Over" includes her one-take, scratch vocal. "I wanted to fix a few things, but Jay wouldn't let me because he felt like it would lose emotion. He's about the heart of music. He's not about making it perfect."

"He is out to serve the artist and the song," she adds. Throughout the process, Joyce insisted that this be a "Brandy Clark record" not a "Jay Joyce record" because she was the one who would be performing it night-after-night even as he moved on to his next project. "If I didn't like something, he'd be the first person to change it. I think this project means nearly as much to him as it does to me."

Though Neil Young's Harvest was the only musical reference point the two discussed before heading into Neon Cross Studios, Clark and Joyce each brought their influences along — including Clark's long-standing love of classic country and Joyce's well-documented affinity for edgier rock. "He and I definitely come from different places, musically, which I think is probably good," she offers. "On 'Daughter,' he started to play an organ part and I said, 'That sounds like [Patsy Cline's] "Back in Baby's Arms."' He said, 'What's that?' He didn't know it."

Along with Sturgill Simpson, Ashley Monroe, Chris Stapleton, and Kacey Musgraves (who provides guest vocals on "Daughter"), Clark is part of a new vanguard in country music — one that tips a hat to tradition, while not eschewing its evolution. "I see what's happening right now and I feel this groundswell of people who love... I would say 'country' music, but I'll take it a step further and say 'real' music. I feel like there are people who are starved for that," she says. "The only music I've ever made is country music. The only music I've ever really listened to consistently is country music. And I want to keep that alive, so there's a responsibility in that, for me."

But, for Brandy Clark, that responsibility is a dream come true.
