Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Moving Image: Portraiture presents a contemporary spin on traditional notions of portraiture. In the video Towards An Architect, Hannu Karjalainen portrays a fictional architect who is experiencing the response of people living in the structures he designed. Daniel Rozin’s Mirror No. 10 is driven by software, written by the artist, that generates a real-time reflection of the environment the screen is displayed in—specifically a live sketch of the viewer approaching the frame. Mesocosm (Northumberland, UK) is an algorithmic work by Marina Zurkow that depicts the passage of time on the moors of Northeast England.

Moving Image: Portraiture is the third of three exhibitions drawn from the collection of the Borusan Contemporary, Istanbul, which since 2011 has been focused on media arts. The works in this series address both formal concerns and conceptual topics; many represent traditional categories such as portraiture and landscape that find new resonance when explored through the strategies of dynamic technology.

Lead support for Moving Image: Portraiture is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design.

OUR STORY
FOKUS increases the awareness of and access to art disciplines by providing unique ways for people of all ages to access the arts. Our primary goal is not to create the next famous artists but simply to allow individuals to understand what their creative talents are and apply this knowledge to their educational, professional and personal life. We create and expose communities to the arts through arts education, community art events, and an online magazine. This helps people understand their innate creativity and develop their talents so that they can maximize their potential for future success. The arts teach you how to create something from nothing and this innovative trait is what leads to success.

This conference explores the powerful engagement with the social in visual art and media, from the aftermath of the Revolutions of 1848 and the Paris Commune of 1871 to the reshaping of the political landscape by the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917—a period whenexperimentation, painting and photography, to imagery in the printed media.

The conference begins on Friday evening with introductory talks on the conference theme. On Saturday presentations by an international panel of distinguished speakers will be complemented by discussion of the broader issues raised by the conference, including the continued relevance of social art history for our contemporary political period and for cultural history more generally.

The featured speakers are Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby (History of Art, University of California Berkeley, author of Extremities: Painting Empire in Post-Revolutionary France, 2002), Steve Edwards (History of Art, Birkbeck University of London, UK, author of The Making of English Photography: Allegories, 2006), André Dombrowski (History of Art and Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies, University of Pennsylvania, author of Cézanne, Murder, and Modern Life, 2013), Marnin Young (Art History, Yeshiva University, author of Realism in the Age of Impressionism: Painting and the Politics of Time, 2015), Andrés Mario Zervigón (Rutgers University, Art History and Center for Cultural Analysis, author of John Heartfield and the Agitated Image: Photography, Persuasion, and the Rise of Avant-Garde Photomontage, 2012), Andrew Hemingway (History of Art, University College London, UK, Emeritus, author of Artists on the Left: American Artists and the Communist Movement, 1926-1956, 2002); Christina Kiaer (Northwestern University, Art History and Slavic Languages and Literature, author of Imagine No Possessions: The Socialist Objects of Russian Constructivism, 2005), and Gail Day (History of Art and Cultural Studies, University of Leeds, UK, author of Dialectical Passions: Negation and Postwar Art Theory, 2010)

UMMA’s exterior media art initiative is free and open to the public, and will run September 15-22 from early evening to dawn along its South State Street-side facade, on the west side of the Maxine and Stuart Frankel and the Frankel Family Wing.

Einstein on the Beach breaks all of the rules of conventional opera. Instead of a traditional orchestral arrangement, Glass composed for the synthesizers, woodwinds, and voices of the Philip Glass Ensemble. Non-narrative in form, the work uses a series of powerful recurrent images as its main dramatic device, shown in juxtaposition with abstract dance sequences created by American choreographer Lucinda Childs.

UMMA encourages viewers to bring blankets and chairs to enjoy the performances on the lawn, and to send feedback using the #ummanights hashtag on social media sites.

Nights at the Museum is presented in partnership with the University Musical Society, the University of Michigan Bicentennial Office, School of Music, Theatre & Dance and Department of Screen Arts & Cultures, the Ann Arbor District Library, and the Neutral Zone.

The presentation discusses three projects for social change based in Liverpool UK, Johannesburg South Africa, and with Chippewa communities of the Upper Peninsula and Canada. Two of the projects focus on activism against gender-based violence and one explores Black identities in international context. Gonzalez discussed how social activist interventions can manifest as performance-based projects, academic writings, or public scholarship. Community-based activism requires ongoing engagement with partner organizations working for common goals.

CREES Noon Lecture. The Singing Turk: Ottoman Power and Operatic Emotions on the European Stage from the Siege of Vienna to the Age of Napoleon (October 4, 2017 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/41336 41336-9144108@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 4, 2017 12:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies

This lecture will consider the huge cultural phenomenon of operas about Turks that played out across the stages of Europe from the 1680s to the 1820s. Though the best-known of these operas, Mozart's "Abduction from the Seraglio," is still widely performed, most of these operas about Turks are unknown today. They include operas by such important composers as Handel, Rameau, Gluck, Haydn, Mozart, and Rossini, as well as many others. The lecture will try to understand this cultural phenomenon in the geopolitical context of European-Ottoman relations and the intellectual context of the Enlightenment, will address the significance of such operas for Christian-Muslim relations in European history, and will also consider why these operas featuring singing Turks disappeared from the repertory over the course of the 19th century.

Larry Wolff is the Julius Silver Professor of History, director of the Center for European and Mediterranean Studies, and executive director of the Remarque Institute at New York University. His research has focused on the relation between Eastern Europe and Western Europe, especially pursuing the argument that Eastern Europe was "invented" in the 18th century by the philosophers and travelers of the Enlightenment. His latest book is "The Singing Turk: Ottoman Power and Operatic Emotions on the European Stage from the Siege of Vienna to the Age of Napoleon" (Stanford 2016). He is also the author of "Paolina’s Innocence: Child Abuse in Casanova’s Venice" (2012), "The Idea of Galicia: History and Fantasy in Habsburg Political Culture" (2010), "Venice and the
Slavs:The
Discovery of Dalmatia in the Age of Enlightenment" (2001), "Inventing Eastern Europe: The
Map of Civilization
on the Mind of the Enlightenment" (1994), "The Vatican and Poland in the Age of the
Partitions" (1988), and "Postcards from the End of the
World: Child Abuse
in Freud's Vienna" (1988). He has received Fulbright, American Council of Learned Societies, and Guggenheim fellowships, and he is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Location: Museum of Art

Organized By: Rackham Graduate School

Though the University of Michigan aspires to cultivate a climate that is welcoming to the members of its diverse student, faculty, and staff bodies, we know that the lived experiences of many in our communities don't always align with these aspirations. Join the CRLT Players for Cuts: Responding to Student Climate Concerns, a two-session series, that invites participants to think together about the many forces that can shape campus climate both positively and negatively. Built around a series of vignettes that explore students' experiences of marginalization, each session offers a space where participants can practice engaging in difficult conversations about and across differences in identity while also reflecting on their personal responsibilities to cultivating inclusive and equitable spaces within and outside of the classroom.

In the first session, participants will:

- Analyze a series of bias incidents from the perspective of a targeted student

- Reflect on their own experiences of marginalizing behavior-- as target, aggressor, or bystander

- Explore strategies for intervening effectively when they observe marginalizing behavior and for responding productively when a concern about their own behavior is raised

Presence as Profanation: German Naturalism's Anti-Apotheoses (October 11, 2017 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/44777 44777-9977683@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 11, 2017 2:00pm
Location: Modern Languages Building
Organized By: Germanic Languages & Literatures

This talk will examine the short life of German naturalism through a look at the early work of Arno Holz. More even than his literary heroes Émile Zola and Henrik Ibsen, Holz draws on a particular aesthetics of presence with roots in the theater’s placing of real bodies on a real stage in real time. However, Holz’s writings also actively work to destroy any sense of the auratic quality of such presence — not to mention, of art as “Verklärung,” as proposed by the practitioners of German realism and pugnaciously argued against by Holz in his own theoretical works. This talk will examine both the weirdness and the prescience of Holz’s attempts at an anti-apotheotic art in the context of the era’s debates around naturalism vis-à-vis realism, looking also at the fraught legacy of the theater in Germany and the residues of the Baroque stage on the cusp of literary modernism.

Weitzman's book Irony’s Antics: Walser, Kafka, Roth and the German Comic Tradition (Northwestern University Press, 2015) explores the crucial but largely neglected role of the comic and its relation to irony in German-language literature from the Romantic era to the early twentieth century, through an examination of the works of Robert Walser, Franz Kafka, and Joseph Roth, and theories of comedy in Freud, Hegel, and others.

She is also co-editor and contributing author of the volume Suspensionen. Über das Untote (Fink, forthcoming), which considers “the undead” as a figure that challenges not only the life/death binary but also the regimes of knowledge that this structures.

Her current project, tentatively titled “At the Limit of the Obscene: Realism, Profanation, Aesthetics,” deals with how the concept of obscenity relates to questions of representation, perception, and knowledge in nineteenth-century German and European realism and beyond.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

Readers Theater provides an opportunity to engage with a literary work to better understand and appreciate the playwright’s point of view and message. This will be done through choral readings, practice script readings of three short plays, reading with a script before members of the class, and discussion of each play.

Introduction to Readers Theater helps create and foster community by providing a welcoming environment where all feel valued, and where all are able to form meaningful connections with one another.

This class for those 50 and above will begin to develop a cohesive group that enjoys reading aloud and participating in Senior Theater.

Please note you must register by October 25th.

Instructor Terrence Madden will lead each two hour class on Wednesdays from November 1 through November 15.

Her work is a cultural critique on class, race, and identity that has always focused on the other and the outsider. She is an original member of New York’s seminal rock and roll, political theater The Playhouse of the Ridiculous and was a teenage superstar in Andy Warhol’s Factory. She grew up to make her own work, sustaining a career of almost 50 years. With her longtime collaborator of 25 years, Steve Zehentner, she also co-helms the Lower East Side Biography Project Stemming The Tide Of Cultural Amnesia, a video documentary project that has broadcast and cybercast weekly for 18 years. For her Penny Stamps event, Arcade will perform her show Longing Lasts Longer (a double award-winner at the Edinburgh Festival), which turns contemporary stand-up on its head to create a crack in the post-gentrified landscape. Driven by her magnetic rock and roll energy, Arcade’s razor-sharp satire is mixed live to euphoric soundscapes inspired by four decades of pop culture.

In partnership with Wasserman Projects.

All Penny Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series presentations are free and open to the public; visit http://stamps.umich.edu/stamps to view upcoming events.

Processional Performance in celebration of the University's Bicentennial. Beginning at the Earl V. Moore Building Pond, the parade leads to the Duderstadt Tree Planting Ceremony.

12:00 p.m. pre-show begins; 12:45 p.m. tree planting.

Presented by Professors Christianne Myers and Michael Gurevich. The Huron River is a beautiful and defining feature of our city and the University. We try to control it as it meanders, tumbles, carves, and flows. It sustains, as it flows through us all. With the Huron River as a source of inspiration, fibers students in the Stamps School of Art & Design created fabrics and students of composition, electronic chamber music and puppetry have used those fabrics to create large processional puppets—some as kinetic instruments, some to take flight, and some to be underscored by sounds and music inspired by our environment. Presented with support from MCubed & The U-M Bicentennial.

BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON explores the life of America's controversial seventh president from his early days as a child to his reign in the White House. With the country severely divided along political and financial lines, Jackson climbs from populist rabble-rouser to President of the United States. Along the way, he meets his wife, Rachel, takes on the Founding Fathers – and rocks like no political figure has ever rocked before, with the help of an onstage trio and an entourage of singing, joking cohorts. Dubbed by many historians as “the American Hitler,” Andrew Jackson and his story cause us to question what causes the rise of such a president — and who is responsible for creating the legacy that he leaves behind.

Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Justine Mahoney's sculptures and collages have captivated audiences for their deceptively innocent approach to exploring the dark side of human existence. Drawing inspiration from the disparate realities of growing up white in 1970s Johannesburg during some of the most tumultuous decades of South African apartheid, Mahoney is deeply influenced by her childhood experiences.
In Tainted, her 2017 exhibition, Mahoney explores emotional and physical states of struggle through convoys of toy-like sculptures. These childlike figures — referred to by the artist as “an army of toy soldiers” — offer an inspired view into this world of collaged fantasy, with themes centered on her own observations of gender, landscape, aspiration, and oppression. “I portray emotional states like resilience and braveness in the face of adversity, and see my child soldiers as standing steadfast and strong…Their role is to bring on a sense of one’s ability to move forward through extreme situations.” Julian McGowan of the Southern Guild Gallery aptly describes it as “Malice in Wonderland.” Mahoney is a graduate of Technikon Witwatersrand (’91).

The Russian Revolution of 1917 was an earthshaking event, the first time in history the working class and oppressed took power. It opened up a new era in human history. The Revolution inevitably had the most profound implications for art and culture, not only in Russia but worldwide. It shattered old ideas and relationships, and opened up enormous new possibilities. Soviet art and film of the early 1920s began to reflect these possibilities, before the rise of Stalinism violently cut them off.

Art today has reached an impasse, bound up with the general crisis of capitalist society. Dominated to a large extent by skepticism and postmodernist cynicism, along with gender and racial politics, very far removed from the conditions of life of wide layers of the population, art needs a new perspective. The lessons and experience of the Russian Revolution are critical in this regard.

David Walsh, arts editor of the World Socialist Web Site, will discuss the impact and influence of the Russian Revolution on art and culture, and their meaning today.

Creating Original Theatre is a Special Topics course for students from any discipline (including non-performance) who wish to explore ways of performing that are not restricted by traditional writing, producing or performing techniques. The studio class serves as a playground in which the performers find their own voices and create portmanteau pieces at the end of the semester. The styles might usually be referred to as Performance Art or Live Art. In the first half of the semester the students are led through weekly exercises or mini projects, creating small pieces driven by prompts from Professor Tulip. In the second half the students form small companies each of which are responsible for a 15 minute (and 22 seconds) performance window. There are no restrictions beyond no damage to the building, its fixtures and fittings or to other performers and the audience. Two of this year's pieces are in performance studios, the other two are in non-performance spaces.

Arts Ambassadors are unpaid volunteers who serve within their living communities as a resource for arts opportunities on campus. As an Arts Ambassador you'll help promote arts events and activities, learn about local arts organizations, meet local artists, and have a small programming budget to organize things like film screenings, craft nights, gallery walks, etc. for your living community! You'll attend monthly meetings and collaborate with other Arts Ambassadors to get the U-M community engaged in the arts! The application deadline for Winter 2018 is January 20.
