Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Moving Image: Portraiture presents a contemporary spin on traditional notions of portraiture. In the video Towards An Architect, Hannu Karjalainen portrays a fictional architect who is experiencing the response of people living in the structures he designed. Daniel Rozin’s Mirror No. 10 is driven by software, written by the artist, that generates a real-time reflection of the environment the screen is displayed in—specifically a live sketch of the viewer approaching the frame. Mesocosm (Northumberland, UK) is an algorithmic work by Marina Zurkow that depicts the passage of time on the moors of Northeast England.

Moving Image: Portraiture is the third of three exhibitions drawn from the collection of the Borusan Contemporary, Istanbul, which since 2011 has been focused on media arts. The works in this series address both formal concerns and conceptual topics; many represent traditional categories such as portraiture and landscape that find new resonance when explored through the strategies of dynamic technology.

Lead support for Moving Image: Portraiture is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design.

Facebook and Indonesian Youth Culture: Identity Performance in the Digital World

Indonesia is a country that has consistently ranked within the top five users of Facebook in the world for several years The culture surrounding social networking is a new concept for the social sciences to tackle. While there are some commonalities throughout the world concerning this topic, there also exists a unique set of challenges, benefits, and implications that are culturally specific. From wall posts to statuses, the agency that Facebook and other social networking sites allows people to have over what, when, and how they perform their identities can provide useful insight into functionalities of online activities within this platform. In the context of the performance of identity in everyday life, Ellen's lecture will explore her summer research study on young adult Facebook users in Indonesia as a means of examining the various ways in which people are utilizing the growing digital ecology as a platform from which they perform their identities.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Justine Mahoney's sculptures and collages have captivated audiences for their deceptively innocent approach to exploring the dark side of human existence. Drawing inspiration from the disparate realities of growing up white in 1970s Johannesburg during some of the most tumultuous decades of South African apartheid, Mahoney is deeply influenced by her childhood experiences.
In Tainted, her 2017 exhibition, Mahoney explores emotional and physical states of struggle through convoys of toy-like sculptures. These childlike figures — referred to by the artist as “an army of toy soldiers” — offer an inspired view into this world of collaged fantasy, with themes centered on her own observations of gender, landscape, aspiration, and oppression. “I portray emotional states like resilience and braveness in the face of adversity, and see my child soldiers as standing steadfast and strong…Their role is to bring on a sense of one’s ability to move forward through extreme situations.” Julian McGowan of the Southern Guild Gallery aptly describes it as “Malice in Wonderland.” Mahoney is a graduate of Technikon Witwatersrand (’91).

Supported by the University of Michigan Museum of Art.

The Russian Revolution of 1917 was an earthshaking event, the first time in history the working class and oppressed took power. It opened up a new era in human history. The Revolution inevitably had the most profound implications for art and culture, not only in Russia but worldwide. It shattered old ideas and relationships, and opened up enormous new possibilities. Soviet art and film of the early 1920s began to reflect these possibilities, before the rise of Stalinism violently cut them off.

Art today has reached an impasse, bound up with the general crisis of capitalist society. Dominated to a large extent by skepticism and postmodernist cynicism, along with gender and racial politics, very far removed from the conditions of life of wide layers of the population, art needs a new perspective. The lessons and experience of the Russian Revolution are critical in this regard.

David Walsh, arts editor of the World Socialist Web Site, will discuss the impact and influence of the Russian Revolution on art and culture, and their meaning today.

Creating Original Theatre is a Special Topics course for students from any discipline (including non-performance) who wish to explore ways of performing that are not restricted by traditional writing, producing or performing techniques. The studio class serves as a playground in which the performers find their own voices and create portmanteau pieces at the end of the semester. The styles might usually be referred to as Performance Art or Live Art. In the first half of the semester the students are led through weekly exercises or mini projects, creating small pieces driven by prompts from Professor Tulip. In the second half the students form small companies each of which are responsible for a 15 minute (and 22 seconds) performance window. There are no restrictions beyond no damage to the building, its fixtures and fittings or to other performers and the audience. Two of this year's pieces are in performance studios, the other two are in non-performance spaces.

CREES/WCED Panel. Russia’s Complex Relationship with the North Caucasus: Past and Present (January 23, 2018 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/47883 47883-11035907@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, January 23, 2018 6:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies

In 2004, a group of Islamic militants occupied a school in Beslan, in the North Caucasus region of the Russian Federation, demanding recognition for an independent Chechnya. Over three hundred hostages, including children, were killed in the siege. The dramatic event and its aftermath is the topic of the UMS performance Us/Them on January 24-28. For this panel, a group of experts will provide much-needed context and analysis of the broader situation of the North Caucasus and its complex relationship with Russia.

Pauline Jones, professor of political science, U-M
Alexander Knysh, professor of Islamic studies, U-M
Tanya Lokshina, Russia program director, Human Rights Watch
Moderator: Geneviève Zubrzycki, professor of sociology; Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia and Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies director

Pauline Jones' scholarly work contributes broadly to the study of institutional origin, change, and impact in a wide variety of settings: newly emergent states with multiple competing subnational identities, states transitioning from planned to market economies, states rich in natural resources, and states with predominantly Muslim populations. The empirical basis for her work has been primarily the former Soviet Union (FSU) -- particularly the five Central Asian republics that gained independence in 1991 (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan). However, she has also engaged in broad cross-national comparisons across regions, including Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), utilizing a combination of controlled case comparisons and statistical analysis. Future research will explore the institutionalization of secularism and the politics of extremism, focusing on countries with predominantly Muslim populations.

Alexander Knysh is professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Michigan and principal investigator of a research project on political Islam/Islamism sponsored by the Rectorate of the St. Petersburg State University, Russia. His academic interests include Islamic mysticism (Sufism); Qur’anic studies; the history of Muslim theological, philosophical, and juridical thought; and modern Islamic/Islamist movements in comparative perspective. He has numerous academic and instructional publications on these subjects, including twelve books. Since 2006, he has served as section editor for “Sufism” on the editorial board of the "Encyclopedia of Islam, Third Edition" (E.J. Brill, Leiden and Boston). He is also executive editor of the "Encyclopedia of Islamic Mysticism" and the "Handbooks of Islamic Mysticism" series associated with it (E.J. Brill, Leiden).

Tanya Lokshina is the Russia program director and a senior researcher at Human Rights Watch and is based in Moscow. Having joined Human Rights Watch in January 2008, Lokshina authored several reports on egregious abuses in Russia’s turbulent North Caucasus region and co-authored a report on violations of international humanitarian law during the 2008 armed conflict in Georgia. Her recent publications include a range of materials on Russia’s vicious crackdown on critics of the government and on violations of international humanitarian law during the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine. Lokshina is a recipient of the 2006 Andrei Sakharov Award, “Journalism as an Act of Conscience.” Her articles on human rights issues have been featured in prominent Russian and foreign media outlets, including CNN, the Guardian, Le Monde, the Moscow Times, Novaya Gazeta, and the Washington Post. Lokshina’s books include "Chechnya Inside Out" and "Imposition of a Fake Political Settlement in the Northern Caucasus." In 2014, her article on the abusive virtue campaign against women in Chechnya was published in "Chechnya at War and Beyond" (Routledge Contemporary Russia and Eastern Europe Series).

Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

We will read aloud and discuss the three Theban plays of Sophocles. We will get to know something of the Sophoclean hero, who demonstrates, as Bernard Knox puts it, “that man’s keenest sight is blindness, his highest knowledge ignorance, his soaring confidence and hope an illusion.”

We will watch “The Gospel at Colonus” and see excerpts from film treatments of “Oedipus Rex” and “Antigone”. The text is Robert Fagles’ “The Three Theban Plays of Sophocles”.

Instructor Marilyn Scott was a lecturer in classics and great books at UM and taught Latin and English literature at Community High School.

This study group for those 50 and over will meet for two hours on Wednesdays beginning on January 24 and running through February 28.

Introduction to Readers Theater (February 7, 2018 9:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/47672 47672-10973748@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, February 7, 2018 9:30am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

Readers Theater provides an opportunity to engage with a literary work to better understand and appreciate the playwright’s point of view and message. This will be done through choral readings, practice script readings of three short plays, reading with a script before members of the class, and discussion of each play.

Introduction to Readers Theater helps create and foster community by providing
a welcoming environment where all feel valued, and where all are able to form meaningful connections with one another. This class for those 50 and over will begin to develop a cohesive group that enjoys reading aloud and participating in Senior Theater.

Instructor Terrence Madden will lead this two hour study group on Wednesdays from February 7 through February 21.

Institute for the Humanities and the Penny Stamps Speaker Series present: Chico MacMurtrie: Border Crossers (February 16, 2018 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/48821 48821-11308911@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 16, 2018 5:30pm
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

This program is free and open to the public. Seating is first come, first served.

Chico Macmurtrie is an award winning artist, renowned internationally for his large-scale robotic sculpture, whose work combines materiality and robotics, the visceral and conceptual. His artist residency and interdisciplinary project "Border Crossers," led by the Institute for the Humanities, encourages investigation of borders as constructed entities, both embodying a simple curiosity to see what lies on the other side of a border (national, architectural, environmental, etc.) and expression of a utopian desire to live in a world without borders.

Students across campus—from LSA, Engineering, Art and Design, and Information—will work with the artist planning, building, and launching a 40-foot robotic sculpture that poetically explores the notion of borders and boundary conditions. The project symbolizes the humanities in action, and the empowerment that can be achieved through working together, overcoming obstacles and divides, and discovering creative solutions.

Chico MacMurtrie is the Artistic Director of Amorphic Robot Works, an interdisciplinary creative collective located in Brooklyn, NY. MacMurtrie/ARW have received numerous awards for their experimental new media artworks, including five grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Andy Warhol Foundation Grant, the Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship, VIDA Life 11.0, and Prix Ars Electronica. Chico MacMurtrie was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in Fine Arts in 2016.

Join us for a reception at the exhibition opening directly following the lecture, at the U-M Institute for the Humanities at 202 S. Thayer in Ann Arbor.

This program is co-sponsored by the University of Michigan Museum of Art. Visiting artist Chico MacMurtrie's residency and project is sponsored by the U-M Institute for the Humanities in collaboration with Michigan Robotics, Michigan Engineering, School of Information, Penny Stamps Speaker Series, Stamps School of Art and Design, and ArtsEngin.

Location: Walgreen Drama Center
Organized By: School of Music, Theatre & Dance

Department of Musical Theatre Studio Production.
Directed by Vincent J Cardinal.

Boasting a large, brazen cast of characters who speak in foul-mouthed street language, the play asks one of the most plaguing questions in the Christian ideology. Written by Stephen Adly Guirgis, author of “Our Lady of 121st Street,” the drama features musical theatre students in a straight play.

This play contains strong language and vulgarities that may prove offensive to some. Recommended for mature audiences.

A mere 20-minute drive from Ann Arbor, the quaint town of Chelsea offers historic charm and unique attractions. You’ll get to experience some of them firsthand, beginning with the Chelsea Milling Company, famous for its production of Jiffy Mix.
After enjoying a guided tour of the facility, we’ll visit the Common Grill for a gourmet lunch. Following lunch, we’ll head to the award-winning Purple Rose Theatre for their production of FLINT, an original play by Jeff Daniels himself. The play’s focus on Vehicle City complements OLLI’s forthcoming day trip to Flint in June 2018. We’ll stick around after the performance for an exclusive “talkback” with FLINT cast before traveling back to Ann Arbor.
Guided tours will involve light walking, and the Purple Rose Theatre has stairs. Please notify us if you require accessible seating or have any other special needs. Boarding begins at 10:15 a.m. to ensure prompt departure at 10:45 a.m.
This Out of Town event is for those over 50.

The charcoal drawing animations of South African artist William Kentridge chronicle the exploits of Soho Eckstein, construction magnate, and Felix Teitelbaum, dreamy artist who only appears naked, two alter egos of Kentridge. The short films of Nine Drawings for Projection are a personal and political meditation on contradictions in South Africa, during Apartheid and after its legislative demise. This is a rare opportunity to view several short films from Kentridge's landmark series, which are normally only shown in museums.

This screening forms part of the interdisciplinary course Personal, Present and Immediate*: Making Performance on Socio-Political Questions, and is open to the public. A post-screening discussion will be moderated by Artist in Residence and Visiting Professor Eryn Rosenthal.

Note: These films include depictions of violence and nudity.

Please RSVP at the link below.

Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

This program is free and open to the public. Seating is first come, first served.

Augusta Read Thomas, one of today’s most acclaimed composers, joins U-M composer Roshanne Etezady for conversation about music, art, and the creative process. “Thomas' music… fairly explodes with an extroverted boldness of utterance audiences and musicians alike find challenging yet immediate” (Chicago Tribune).

SMTD students perform some of Thomas’ most intimate chamber works. This program is offered in conjunction with the UMMA exhibition 'Exercising the Eye: The Gertrude Kasle Collection,' which celebrates the pioneering gallerist, Gertrude Kasle (1917–2016), who was a key figure in the formation of Detroit’s contemporary art community in the 1960s and 70s. Kasle awakened local communities to the kind of avant-garde art she experienced in New York City and advocated for regional artists that she felt likewise broke with tradition.

The SMTD@UMMA performance series is generously supported by the Katherine Tuck Enrichment Fund and the Greg Hodes and Heidi Hertel Hodes—Partners in the Arts Endowment Fund.

Lead support for 'Exercising the Eye: The Gertrude Kasle Collection' is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Michigan Medicine, and the University of Michigan CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.

LIFE ON THE SWERVE: Once Upon a Time Called Now! is a show based on the performance methods of RHODESSA JONES & THE MEDEA PROJECT: Theater for Incarcerated Women/HIV Circle, which are rooted in autobiographical theater and Greek myth. Ms. Jones will be accompanied by renown musician/composer, Idris Ackamoor, and long - time Medea actress, Felicia Scaggs as they present a musically informed theatrical production. There will be a Q & A/Discussion with Rhodessa Jones and accompanying performers after the show. The Medea Project serves incarcerated, formerly incarcerated, and HIV + women and community members, empowering them to heal their lives by connecting to the larger mythical fabric of the world's great stories linking their own stories to them. Some of the themes in the presentation relate to issues of HIV, addiction, prison, loss, and recovery. Myth involves the invocation of deities as well as primordial entities: these stories connect our individual lives to patterns of change, transformation, growth, and power.

THE MEDEA PROJECT is a production of Cultural Odyssey, which continues to develop original productions that demonstrate their vision of “ARTS AS SOCIAL ACTIVISM”. In 1989, on the basis of material developed while conducting classes at the San Francisco County Jail, Rhodessa Jones created “Big Butt Girls, Hard Headed Women”, a performance piece based on the lives of the incarcerated women she encountered. During the work’s creation, Jones and jail officials were made aware of issues that were specific to female inmates, such as guilt, depression, and self-loathing, which arose in response to feelings of failure in the face of community. These issues directly contribute to recidivism among female offenders. Based on this observation, Jones founded THE MEDEA PROJECT: THEATER FOR INCARCERATED WOMEN to explore whether an arts-based approach could help reduce the numbers of women returning to jail.

In 2008, THE MEDEA PROJECT joined forces with University of California San Francisco’s Women’s HIV Clinic to create theater that explores what it means to be living with the virus in the twenty-first century. For the past seven years, The Medea Project: HIV Circle has performed shows all around the United States, sharing the Truth and the stories of what it means to be female and infected or affected.

Come home Charley Patton (March 29, 2018 7:10pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/51464 51464-12112487@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 29, 2018 7:10pm
Location: East Quadrangle
Organized By: Residential College

In 2005, Ralph Lemon completed THE GEOGRAPHY TRILOGY, a 10-year project that was a profound self-examination and a sustained inquiry into the social gravities of art, race and identity at the turn of the 21st century. The Trilogy developed a global performance and visual language that was simultaneously modern and traditional, East and West, light and dark, formal and free form. The primacy of process, and the richness of materials that process uncovered-- artistic, emotional, historical-- created profound questions for Ralph as to how best to 'translate' the process and 'control' the materials in order to bring a work for audiences to the stage. The ongoing struggle between process and production created a tension that became a vital element in the Trilogy works, which ultimately included dance/theater performances, books, video journals, web projects and gallery exhibitions.

Part 1: Geography (premiered 1997), began with Lemon's exploration into apparent African and post-African connections to his life as an African American. The cast included nine men of African descent from Cٴe d'Ivoire, Guinea and the U.S.

In Part 2: Tree: (premiered 2000), Lemon directed his inquiry to Asia, following his attraction to Buddhism and how it might generate an art aesthetic. Tree placed the energy and sound of the "Africa" of Geography next to a perceived Asian "quiet," while exploring the collision of tradition and modernity through contemporary performance. Performers included male and female dancers and musicians from Cٴe d'Ivoire, China, India, Japan, Taiwan and the United States.

For Part 3: Come home Charley Patton (premiered 2004), Lemon returned to America. Here, he visited charged sites from the volatile history of the Civil Rights period, performed ritual "counter-memorials" at lynching sites, and danced in the living rooms of relatives of early blues musicians from the Mississippi Delta. Lemon also wove ideas from a mix of iconoclastic artists of contemporary literature and performance art, from James Baldwin to Bruce Nauman, into this historically charged research of rural America. Come Home Charley Patton investigated how different generations remember the same critical events and places; what kind of narratives do justice to traumatic memories; and what form memories can ultimately take through the aesthetic works of this project. The exploration of these elements contributed to a performance where documentary footage and autobiography shared the stage with the abstraction and fiction of contemporary dance/theater.

Choreographed and directed by Ralph Lemon
Featuring performances by Djédjé Djédjé Gervais, Darrell Jones, Ralph Lemon, Gesel Mason, Okwui Okpokwasili, and David Hamilton Thomson

Come home Charley Patton (2004) is the culmination of Lemon's GEOGRAPHY TRILOGY, "a 10-year project that was a profound self-examination and a sustained inquiry into the social gravities of art, race and identity at the turn of the 21st century.

"...For Come home Charley Patton, Lemon visited charged sites from the volatile history of the Civil Rights period, performed ritual 'counter-memorials' at lynching sites, and danced in the living rooms of relatives of early blues musicians from the Mississippi Delta... Come Home Charley Patton investigated how different generations remember the same critical events and places; what kind of narratives do justice to traumatic memories; and what form memories can ultimately take through the aesthetic works of this project. The exploration of these elements contributed to a performance where documentary footage and autobiography shared the stage with the abstraction and fiction of contemporary dance/theater" (MAPP International).

The student-driven artistic community at the University of Michigan is one of the most vibrant in the nation; there are over two hundred and fifty diverse student arts organizations operating across Michigan's campus. These groups produce innovative and engaging art across all fields and their presence enriches the culture of the University. The Accolades Awards were developed by Arts at Michigan to foster the artistic growth of the student body at the University of Michigan by recognizing the accomplishments of the many extraordinary student arts groups on campus.

Awards are designed to recognize achievements by student organizations in a wide range of categories, including Theatre, Music, Dance, Comedy and Improv, Visual Arts, Literary publications and more. Nominations are open from February 18- March 30, and the entire campus will be encouraged to vote for the most deserving groups in each category online. Then, on Tuesday, April 23rd, the last day of classes, we will announce the winners for this year's Accolades awards through a series of announcements on social media. Winners in each category will receive $100 for their organization, plus other great prizes.

The dream-like setting is a walled community, from which the characters ceaselessly try to escape, without success. Only Don Quixote, who calls himself "an unashamed victim of romantic folly," has access to the outside. Kilroy is a central figure, an ex-boxer, always the Patsy, the fall guy, who asks so little and always gets short-changed, but he never quits hoping to see the outside. The other principal story is a romance between the aging, hunting Camille and the fading Casanova, who yearns now only for tenderness and faithfulness. There are subdued sequences of tenderness and pathos as well as scenes of cataclysmic violence: the near escape of Kilroy the battle to ride the escape plane; and the wild fiesta to crown the "tired old peacock," Casanova. LRCCS Tuesday Lecture Series | Chasing Spirits Out of the Script: The Politics of Early Socialist Theatrical Adaptation (April 10, 2018 11:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/48601 48601-11254306@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, April 10, 2018 11:30am
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies

Theatrical adaptation frequently plays with the traces of earlier incarnations both from the script and from stage performance, but as often as these ghosts are deliberately evoked, their presence reveals the influences of other unspoken politics in the world of re-makes. In the "xiqu" (Chinese opera) play, Chasing the Fish Spirit, a dense series of rapid re-makes at the end of the 1950s put the complex interplay of these politics into full view, pitting not just the play’s downtrodden against the wealthy or mortals against immortals, but fame against obscurity, city against country, high culture against low, and perhaps most riskily, ideological critique against ideological correctness. The nexus of these different tensions forms the off-stage drama of how this once-closeted play from rural Hunan eventually made it through multiple adaptations onto silver screens for export to Hong Kong and abroad.

Anne Rebull is a postdoctoral fellow at the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies. Her research interests focus on political movements to reform indigenous Chinese theater in the modern era, especially the periods before and after the founding of the People’s Republic. Her book project focuses on the practices of theatrical and filmic adaptation that were part of the reform movement in the early Socialist era, and frames them within greater political debates on theatrical performance and representation. She earned her PhD from the University of Chicago in 2017.
