WILLOW RUN Comes to Chelsea (August 1, 2018 10:15am) https://events.umich.edu/event/48437 48437-11233273@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, August 1, 2018 10:15am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

It is only through the magic of the theater that Willow Run could possibly come to Chelsea. Join us on this day trip which will include a performance of WILLOW RUN at the Purple Rose Theatre. WILLOW RUN is a world premiere by Jeff Duncan.
The original music is by Jeff Daniels and his son, Ben.

The play follows the journey of four women who migrated from all over America to find new lives at the Willow Run Bomber Plant located near Ypsilanti. The plant employed 40,000 employees, mostly women, who turned out B-24 Bombers at the rate of one every 55 minutes.

Lunch at Terry B’s Restaurant in Dexter will precede the matinee performance of the play. Jeff Duncan, the author of WILLOW RUN, will join us for lunch and provide us with a presentation regarding the play. Following lunch, Jeff will be with us at the Purple Rose Theatre for the performance and will participate in the “talkback” after the play. Boarding begins at 10:15 a.m. to ensure prompt departure at 10:45 a.m.

This OLLI Out of Town event is for those over 50.

Arts at Michigan is looking for enthusiastic, outgoing, and friendly students who have an interest in the arts that they want to share! Arts Ambassadors are unpaid volunteers who serve as the bridge between the arts and the U-M student body. As an Arts Ambassador you'll help promote arts events and activities, learn about local arts organizations, meet local artists, and have a small programming budget to organize things like film screenings, craft nights, gallery walks, etc.

Being a part of the Arts Ambassadors program is an extremely rewarding and fun experience! As an Arts Ambassador, you will be responsible for attending weekly meetings, taking leadership roles in organizing arts events, collaborating with other Arts Ambassadors to engage students in the arts, and most importantly, spreading the word about the vast arts community at U-M!

Learn more about being an Arts Ambassador by attending our Mass Meeting on Tuesday, September 11 from 5-6pm in the Maize & Blue Auditorium of the Student Activities Building. The application deadline for Fall 2018 is September 20. To apply, visit http://artsatmichigan.umich.edu/programs/ambassadors/.

CJS Noon Lecture Series | Cheerful Disguise of Japanese Militarism: Geisha's Performances in the 1930’s (September 20, 2018 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/53992 53992-13510885@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 20, 2018 12:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Center for Japanese Studies

Part of the Toyota Visiting Professor 30th Anniversary Special Lecture Series.

Dance performance of geisha was one of the leading popular entertainments in the first half of the 20th century. Of them, Miyako Odori, an annual dance performance of geisha of Gion, Kyoto was especially powerful. Themes of every year’s Miyako Odori used to be happy, cheerful, beautiful, gorgeous, and were not serious at all. However sudden change was seen in the year 1933. The theme turned heavily political. They seemed to have competed to express their obedience to the national policy of the time, choosing themes to lift the spirits for the war.

Mariko Okada is Associate Professor at Faculty of Humanities, J. F. Oberlin University, Tokyo, Japan. She received her Ph.D. from Waseda University in Tokyo in 2011. She published her book “The Birth of Kyōmai ("Kyoto Dance"): Inoue-ryu Dance in Nineteenth-Century Kyoto, Japan" (Japanese) in 2013.

If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event, please reach out to bkinzer@umich.edu at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

Euripides’ Medea: Witch? Femme fatale? Cold-blooded killer? Or wronged woman, driven over the edge? Our afternoon of study will consider why we remain so fascinated by her.

After a short introduction, we will read the play aloud. Participants may choose to be readers or audience, as they prefer. At the end we’ll discuss our interpretations of her and our ideas about how the play might be staged today. We will be using the James Morwood translation, Euripides, Medea and Other Plays (Oxford World’s Classics) Reissue Edition.

Instructor Marilyn Scott taught both at the University of Michigan and at Community H.S. She has led numerous OLLI study groups in the past. This study group for those 50 and above will meet on Friday, September 21 from 1-4 p.m.

"Understanding Stage Fright" (September 26, 2018 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/53398 53398-13358066@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, September 26, 2018 3:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

This program will explore stage fright (aka performance anxiety). We will discuss why you may doubt yourself, despite doing all you could do to prepare.
You will learn about the complexities of stage fright and some practical strategies to optimize your outcome and enjoyment when speaking or performing. Anyone performing or speaking in front of groups (or wishing they could) will want to attend.
Julie Jaffee Nagel has many years of experience dealing with her own stage fright as a pianist, then later treating performance anxious individuals as a psychologist, and writing about the topic. Julie earned a Ph.D. in Psychology and Social Work from the U.of M., a graduate of Juilliard and the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute.
Her book publications include “Managing Stage Fright; A Guide for Musicians and Music Teachers” (2017), and “Melodies of the Mind” (2013). She is in private practice in Ann Arbor.
This Study Group for those 50 and over will meet Wednesday September 26 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.

Organized By: Residential College

Doin’ Time: Through the Visiting Glass examines the impact of incarceration on families. Ashley Lucas, the child of an incarcerated father, conducted interviews in California, Texas, and New York with prisoners’ family members, former prisoners, and people who do work connected to prisons. She also corresponded with over 400 prisoners from across the U.S. Weaving together these interviews and letters with her personal experience as a prisoner’s child and creative writing, Lucas wrote a one-person play which she performs herself. Doin’ Time uses monologues to take the audience through a variety of perspectives on the families of the incarcerated. Since 2004, Lucas has performed Doin’ Time both inside and outside prisons throughout the U.S. and in Ireland, Canada, and Brazil. The play runs one hour and fifteen minutes and is always followed by an audience discussion.

RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. THE EVENT IS SOLD OUT, but if you did not get a reservation, you may come to the event and get on the waiting list in case a spot opens up.

Part of the Toyota Visiting Professor 30th Anniversary Special Lecture Series

NOTE: Please join us for "Blue Moon Over Memphis" at the Power Center on Friday, October 12, 2018 at 7pm.

In preparation for the English-language Noh performance at the University of Michigan of "Blue Moon Over Memphis" (BMOM), a story based on the legendary Elvis Presley, this talk examines how Noh can be created and performed in languages other than Japanese, what aspects BMOM has maintained or adapted from tradition, and how this version deviates from tradition. This talk posits that English-language Noh has become an entry point into Noh for audiences, and that its composers have created English-language Noh text-music conventions. BMOM reveals the flexibility of the Noh form and how it can accommodate innovative musical elements in English.

Mariko Anno is Associate Professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology. She earned a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from Tokyo University of the Arts and a D.M.A. in Flute Performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research examines Japanese Noh drama in a contemporary transnational context through English-language Noh.

Blue Moon Over Memphis is a stark and beautiful meditation on loneliness, with numerous textual and musical allusions to 20th-century popular song.

Judy is a lonely, middle-aged woman, and a devout Elvis fan. She makes a pilgrimage to Graceland on the anniversary of Elvis's death, but she is forced to wait outside due to the overwhelming crowds. Her dream shattered, she is left to reflect on her life. But then, during the candlelight vigil, a mysterious man lets her into the Meditation Garden where Elvis is buried, and there, under the light of a blue moon, she encounters a spirit...

Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

With the success of last year’s Introduction to Readers Theater, we’ve added a new course. In Theater Circles for Seniors, the eight members of the class will be divided into three groups. Each small group will both rehearse within their circle, and then, reading from a script, will present their ten-minute play to the rest of the class. Following each of three play readings there will be a discussion.

In a positive environment, Theater Circles for Seniors provides an opportunity for each participant to engage with meaningful literary works while developing positive relationships; and it’s fun!

This study group for those 50 and over will meet on Wednesdays, 1:30-3:30, from October 17 – November 14. Instructor: Terrence Madden

This presentation argues against the conventional wisdom which views the performance culture of the People’s Republic of China as a monolithic, top-down, and meaningless practice characterized solely by censorship in a totalitarian regime. Professor Chen will demonstrate that propaganda performances on the process and history of the communist revolution and its leaders can be studied as a complex, dialogic, and interweaving process, in which multiple voices and opposing views collide, negotiate, and compromise in forming what looks like a mainstream ideology—and indeed functions as such—to legitimize the state and its right to rule. She argues that propaganda study can delineate performative rituals which insinuated itself in the form of “personal” memories, nostalgia, commercial culture, pop culture, youth culture, and the cybersphere with popular appeal, which can explore the charisma of revolutionary leaders to create romance, detective, suspense, and war stories that overlap with Hollywood blockbusters despite their obvious differences.

Xiaomei Chen is a professor at the University of California at Davis where she teaches modern Chinese literature, film, and theater. She is the author of "Occidentalism" (1995), "Acting the Right Part" (2002) and "Staging Chinese Revolution" (2016). She is the editor of "Reading the Right Text" (2003) and the "Columbia Anthology of Modern Chinese Drama" (2010) and co-editor, with Claire Sponsler, of "East of West: Cross-Cultural Performances and the Staging of Difference" (2000)"; with Julia Andrew, of "Visual Culture in Contemporary China" (2001), and with Steven Siyuan Liu, "Hong Shen and the Modern Mediasphere in Republican-Era China" (2016).

The Author's Forum Presents: Technologies for Intuition: Cold War Circles and Telepathic Rays (October 30, 2018 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/54124 54124-13530644@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, October 30, 2018 5:30pm
Location: Hatcher Graduate Library
Organized By: The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts

Alaina Lemon (professor of anthropology) and Karla Mallette (professor of Italian and Middle East studies) discuss Lemon's new book "Technologies for Intuition: Cold War Circles and Telepathic Rays," followed by Q & A.

About the book:
Since the Cold War, Americans and Russians have together cultivated fascination with the workings and failures of communicative channels. Each accuses the other of media jamming and propaganda, and each proclaims its own communication practices better for expression and creativity. Technologies for Intuition theorizes phaticity—the processes by which people make, check, discern, or describe channels and contacts, judging them weak or strong, blocked or open. This historical ethnography of intuition juxtaposes telepathy experiments and theatrical empathy drills, passing through settings where media and performance professionals encounter neophytes, where locals open channels with foreigners, and where skeptics of contact debate naifs. Tacking across geopolitical borders, the book demonstrates how contact and channel shift in significance over time, through events and political relations, in social conflict, and in conversation. The author suggests that Cold War preoccupations and strategies have marked theoretical models of communication and mediation, even while infusing everyday, practical technologies for intuition.

The theater world in Russia is lively as ever, with a range of styles and interests represented by innovative and original work. But that world is also under significant threat as the Russian state puts increasing pressure on theaters and especially directors. The substance of the great art of theater is communication, respect, reverence, and an unflagging belief in humanity. Theater thrives on humanity the way flowers feed on soil, sun, and water. It in turn produces the conditions for humanity to grow. Theater produces and nurtures community and brings people together. In her lecture, Irina Khutsieva will expound on the relationship between theater, state and society in today's Russia.

Irina Khutsieva is a stage director and acting instructor in Moscow, Russia. Trained at “GITIS,” the Russian Academy of Theatrical Art, she has more than 30 years of experience in Russian theater. She now directs her own studio theater, the Chamber Theater, Moscow, founded in 2004. Khutsieva has staged more than 50 plays in Russia, Germany, and the U.S. She has worked at one of Russia’s most distinguished theater academies – the Shchepkin Higher Theatre Institute, associated with the State Academic Maly Theatre of Russia. She also has extensive experience teaching college drama majors. A specialist and practitioner of the Stanislavski Method, she incorporates the principles and traditions of Russian psychological theater and has also developed her own staging and teaching methods. In recent years, she has directed a major gala performance shown on Russian national TV and has run workshops for professional actors in regional towns throughout Russia.

In Black Opera: History, Power, Engagement (published May 4, 2018), Naomi André draws on the experiences of performers and audiences to explore this music's resonance with today's listeners. Interacting with creators and performers, as well as with the works themselves, André reveals how black opera unearths suppressed truths. These truths provoke complex, if uncomfortable, reconsideration of racial, gender, sexual, and other oppressive ideologies. Opera, in turn, operates as a cultural and political force that employs an immense, transformative power to represent or even liberate.

In Dance Me a Song: Astaire, Balanchine, Kelly, and the American Film Musical (published June 27, 2018), Beth Genné traces Astaire's, Balanchine's, and Kelly's collaborations with composers and film-makers, crossing stylistic and class boundaries to develop a truly modern dance style and genres for the film musical. She contextualizes their work within the history of dance, music, and film and its roots in the diverse dance and music cultures of jazz age America's nation of immigrants. She demonstrates how concepts and visual-musical devices derived from dance-making would give entire films, both musical and non-musical, the rhythmic flow and feeling of dance.

Naomi André is Associate Professor in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies, Women’s Studies, and the Associate Director for Faculty at the Residential College at the University of Michigan. Her earlier books, Voicing Gender: Castrati, Travesti, and the Second Woman in Early Nineteenth-Century Italian Opera (2006) and Blackness in Opera (2012, co-edited collection) focus on opera from the nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries and explore constructions of gender, race and identity.

Beth Genné is Professor of Dance History and Art History in the Dance Department and the Arts and Ideas concentration of the Residential College. She has written numerous book chapters on British ballet and dance in film (including Gene Kelly and Vincente Minnelli) and articles in such journals as Dance Research, Dance Chronicle, and Art Journal. Her first book, The Making of a Choreographer, was on the early training and choreographic development of Ninette de Valois, founder of the Royal Ballet.

Reading of “canned meat” (“dosenfleisch”) (November 27, 2018 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/57534 57534-14209038@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, November 27, 2018 5:00pm
Location: Modern Languages Building
Organized By: Germanic Languages & Literatures

Reading by playwright in German
English translation by Neil Blackadder
Performed by students and faculty of the School of Music, Theatre, & Dance: Kris Danford, Liam Loomer, Sarah Prendergast, Malcolm Tulip

"And so now here we are lying on this rest area like a whale, a stranded whale. The flesh starts to rot when we can’t keep driving. As long as you’re moving, you don’t decay."

A truck driver has to stop at a motorway service area due to a disastrous accident. Frustrated by the forced standstill, he watches the nightly events. An insurance inspector, obsessed with any traffic accidents, investigates the so-called death curve at the service area. But there is as well Beate, the operator of the rest stop, who shares a dark secret with Jayne, an auto-aggressive television actress addicted to high-speed.

Ferdinand Schmalz’s ‘canned meat’ is a metaphor for the paradox of mobility in times of neoliberalism. One can get everywhere, but never to one self – thus, the only possibility left to achieve authenticity is the life-threatening collision.

Ferdinand Schmalz is an Austrian author and playwright. His works include “am beispiel der butter,” “dosenfleisch,” “herzerlfresser,” and “jedermann (stirbt).” His plays are staged at the leading theatres in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, e.g. Deutsches Theater, Burgtheater Wien, Schauspiel Leipzig, Schauspielhaus Zürich. He won several awards for his writing, beyond others the Retzhofer Dramapreis (2013), the Ingeborg Bachmann Preis (2017), and the Ludwig-Mülheims-Theaterpreis (2018). For “dosenfleisch” he was nominated for the most prestigious drama award in the German-speaking countries, the Mülheimer Dramatikerpreis. Furthermore, “dosenfleisch” was invited to the Autorentheatertage in Berlin.

The reading is sponsored by the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures. These events are free and open to the public. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to participate, please contact 734-764-8018 or germandept@umich.edu at least one week in advance.

LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Now We See It, Now We Don't: How to Theorize Traditional Chinese Song-Drama (December 4, 2018 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/52930 52930-13148799@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, December 4, 2018 12:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies

This talk will attempt to bring premodern Chinese song-drama out of the straightjacket of Western terminology, that is, comedy vs. tragedy, opera vs. drama, role type vs. character, music vs. voice, etc. Instead, it will seek to map new ways to think through traditional Chinese theatrical practices (playwrighting, acting, musicking, staging, audience participation, etc.) in an effort to both historicize and globalize the modern scholarly discourse on Chinese theater.

Patricia Sieber is an Associate Professor of Chinese in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Ohio State University, where she teaches courses on premodern Chinese drama and fiction, the history of the book, and translation studies. She is the author of "Theaters of Desire: Authors, Readers, and the Reproduction of Early Chinese Song-Drama, 1300-2000" and is currently the lead editor of "How to Read Chinese Drama." She has given talks in the US, Europe, Russia, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan and her work has appeared in journals, books, and encyclopedias in English, Chinese, and German.

If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange. Email us at chinese.studies@umich.edu.

Location: Duderstadt Center
Organized By: Runyonland Productions

For the Record is an original work written by Broadway performer and University of Michigan faculty member Geoff Packard. Runyonland Productions has been workshopping the show with the playwright, and this production will be the piece’s world premiere. Taking place in the Duderstadt Video Studio, For the Record explores the world of a young man trying to escape the history of his family, haunted by the genetic disposition of Huntington’s disease. He learns no matter how hard you try, you can’t escape what’s written in your DNA.

Geoff is delighted to be debuting the production in Ann Arbor with Runyonland, stating,

“I believe that Thomas Laub and his Runyonland Productions, are an exciting blend of positive energy, tenacity, and grit--all things necessary when bringing new works into the world. In the theatre, we ought to have a nurturing environment for the often-painful process of creating new works. I am optimistic that both the immense talent of its artists, and the intelligence of its audiences, will make Ann Arbor a nurturing environment for artistic achievement and a great incubator for new work.”

A romantic comedy by William Shakespeare

Department of Theatre & Drama
Directed by Daniel Cantor.

Shakespeare’s timeless romantic comedy, Twelfth Night follows separated twins Sebastian and Viola. Finding herself shipwrecked off Illyria and believing her brother dead, Viola disguises herself as a man and enters the service of Duke Orsino. The Duke believes himself in love with Olivia, but Olivia is swiftly falling for the disguised Viola. In the meantime, Viola is developing feelings for the Duke. When Sebastian (who is not dead) arrives in Illyria, confusion reigns supreme. Unrequited love and mistaken identities abound as the foursome journey towards a joyous discovery.

Twelfth Night, written around 1601, is one of Shakespeare’s richest plays. The show takes its title from the revelry following the twelfth day of Christmas, bringing together romance and music in a tale full of folly (it is also the day the first production was performed). One of the most “modern” of Shakespeare’s plays, the comedy’s themes about the fickleness of love, the arbitrary nature of relationships, and the re-thinking of sexuality all conspire with brilliant verse to push boundaries and look at the world upside down. Twelfth Night explores not only the nature of desire, but how perception is clouded by desire, and in turn, explores the very nature of perception itself. What is the disguise and what is the truth, is never absolutely certain, and often in the eye of the beholder (hence the play’s subtitle, What You Will). As Feste, the play’s clown says, “that which is so is not so.” The production puts a twentieth-century twist on the story, framing the action in a world inflected by the delightful sites and sounds of the 1930s.

*Twelfth Night runs approximately three hours including one intermission.

By the dictates of an obscure local law, Ludwig, the troupe’s principal comedian, is able to achieve this end simply by drawing a higher card in a ‘duel’ with his royal rival. However, Ludwig is then required to assume not only the trappings of royalty, but also all of its various obligations, including contracted engagements to marry three different women – much to the chagrin of his fiancé, Lisa. Hilarity ensues, until at the last moment a startling discovery is made, sending everything topsy-turvy all over again.

Uncle Vanya, drama in four acts by Anton Chekhov, published in 1897 as Dyadya Vanya and was first produced in 1899 in Moscow. Considered one of Chekhov’s theatrical masterpieces, the play is a study of aimlessness and hopelessness.

Ivan Voynitsky, called Uncle Vanya, is bitterly disappointed when he realizes that he has sacrificed and wasted his life managing the country estate and business affairs of his former brother-in-law, Serebryakov, who, Vanya discovers, will never be anything more than a pedantic second-rate academic. Sonya, Serebryakov’s daughter and Vanya’s assistant, silently endures her unrequited love for a local physician. Vanya attempts to shoot Serebryakov but misses, and little changes. Neither of them can give up the work, however meaningless, to which they have devoted their lives. (From Britannica)

Unraveling Oedipus

Sophocles' play, the Oedipus Tyrannus, tells the story of Oedipus' discovery of his identity as the killer of his father and the husband of his mother. As a dramatization of this process of self-discovery, the play shows how an individual goes through a process of unravelling as he realizes that his assumptions about others are unfounded and becomes aware of who he really is as well as the harm that he has caused others.

This event will feature a dramatic reading of excerpts from the play performed by the Black and Brown Community Theater of Detroit. There will also be ample opportunity for discussion of the relation of the play to the theme of this year's MLK Day, namely unravelling our biases and identities in ways that allow us to create a more just and inclusive community. A reception will follow. All members of the university community and the general public are warmly invited to attend.

Anne Basting, founder and CEO of the award-winning TimeSlips Creative Storytelling program will give a talk on her work to create meaning and connection with those living with memory loss. Basting is recognized as an international expert in community-engaged arts practices and the author of several books, including Forget Memory: Creating Better Lives for People with Dementia.  She is an advocate for the arts as an integral element in our care systems.  Basting is a Professor of Theater at University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee and a MacArthur Fellow.

TimeSlips is evidence-based, award-winning and person centered, bringing meaning and purpose into the lives of elders through creative engagement. TimeSlips strives to inspire others to see beyond memory loss and recognize the strength of people with dementia. Says Basting: “We transform aging care by building Creative Communities of Care that engage elders, volunteers, staff and families.”

Research suggests that TIMESLIPS can:
Increase the quality and quantity of interactions between staff and residents in care settings Improve caregiver attitudes toward aging and people with dementia Reduce psychotropic medications by decreasing contributing factors of anxiety and depression Improve affect and communication among people with dementia Decrease distressed behaviors among people with dementia Increase social engagement among people with dementia

Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

The University of Michigan School of Social Work is pleased to present NYC-based artist, DJ and poet Juliana Huxtable on the occasion of the 2018 Martin Luther King, Jr. Symposium. Huxtable's work probes the perception and presentation of identity, history and online communities.  Huxtable will present a new iteration of her performance work highlighting her compelling use of language, and collaborations in music, projection, and lighting design.  Featuring instrumental performances by her frequent collaborators, the pianist, percussionist, and composer Joe Heffernan, Detroit-based harpist Ahya Simone with lighting design by Michael Potvin. Huxtable’s explorations invite us to contemplate the power and powerlessness of the body as well as its dispossession in relation to technology, violence, and blackness. Her performance marks Michigan Social Work’s first commissioned artist in over 20 years, as a part of the Social Justice Art Collection.

Huxtable’s work is included in Art in the Age of the Internet, 1989 to Today on view at the University of Michigan Museum of Art from December 15, 2018 to April 7, 2019. Organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, the exhibition examines the radical impact of internet culture on visual art since the invention of the web in 1989. This exhibition presents more than forty works across a variety of media—painting, performance, photography, sculpture, video, and web-based projects. It features work by some of the most important artists working today, including Judith Barry, Juliana Huxtable, Pierre Huyghe, Josh Kline, Laura Owens, Trevor Paglen, Seth Price, Cindy Sherman, Frances Stark, and Martine Syms.

Huxtable will also give a Penny W. Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series Lecture at 5:10 p.m. on February 7, 2018 at the Michigan Theater.

Major funding was provided by The Faculty Alliance for Diversity at the University of Michigan School of Social Work.

Anishinaabe Theatre Exchange artists will be in residence at the University of Michigan campus from February 16-23, 2019, culminating in two performances of the new play by Carolyn Dunn, Three Sisters. The Anishinaabe Theatre Exchange uses theatre to activate networks with Native communities in the Great Lakes region. The group is a consortium of people from various backgrounds working to promote dialogue about Indigenous culture and issues.

In this brand new tragicomedy by Carolyn Dunn, three sisters, long estranged from family, community, and one another, return home to the Tunica-Biloxi Reservation lands in Louisiana at the behest of their dying aunt as she makes preparations for her final journey home. A dramatic comedy by Caryl Churchill
Department of Theatre & Drama
Directed by Gillian Eaton

Love and Information features 57 short, hilarious, and poignant vignettes with over 100 unnamed characters trying to communicate with each other in today’s world of shortened attention spans and vast societal sharing. Spouses, friends, siblings, and colleagues are dramatized in the middle of conversations as they deal with endless streams of data that can possibly alter relationships. They interrupt. They finish each other’s thoughts. They think they have finished each other’s thoughts. With so much sharing, when does TMI really become TMI? How do we love in a world with so much information? This is a play about individuals trying to connect with and understand one another.

Written in 2012, Love and Information distills the societal forces shaping our lives. Considered one of Great Britain’s greatest living playwrights, Caryl Churchill is well known for her provocative and relevant plays that are remarkably varied in both structure and topic. Her best-known works, Cloud Nine, Top Girls, Serious Money, Far Away, and A Number, combine a darkly funny imagination with a strong political viewpoint. “Leave it to Ms. Churchill to come up with a work that so ingeniously and exhaustively mirrors our age of the splintered attention span. (The New York Times.)

Distinct from a policy body or counseling effort, FASAN works collaboratively with the SMTD community to deepen our collective understanding of issues surrounding sexual misconduct, especially the power dynamics that can lead to abuse and a culture of silence. It strives to create a climate of open communication, awareness, and responsiveness through community education events. FASAN volunteers commit to attending additional training, particularly about U-M policies and support resources, so that they can serve as informed consultants to their faculty and staff peers. Network members seek to create an ever more positive learning atmosphere at SMTD and to improve the professional climate of the performing arts field as a whole.

Public Talk: Phil Tinari, Director and CEO, UCCA Center for Contemporary Art (February 28, 2019 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/60956 60956-14993222@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, February 28, 2019 6:00pm
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Phil Tinari is the Director and CEO of Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA), a leading Chinese independent institution of contemporary art in Beijing. At this talk, Tinari will discuss Chinese art and its global context, with reference to his work at UCCA, as well as curatorial projects at the Guggenheim and SFMOMA. Since 2011, Tinari has led UCCA's transformation from a founder-driven, private museum into China’s leading independent, international institution of contemporary art, culminating in 2017 with a restructuring that has brought the institution, originally known as the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, into the patronage of a new group of mainly Chinese trustees. During Tinari’s tenure, UCCA has become known for both its artistic program and its operational model. It has mounted more than seventy exhibitions and a wide range of public programs, bringing artistic voices both established and emerging, Chinese and international, to a growing audience of nearly a million visitors each year.

Prior to joining UCCA, Tinari launched LEAP, an internationally distributed, bilingual magazine of contemporary art published by the Modern Media Group, in 2009. A widely published writer and critic, he is a contributing editor of Artforum, and was founding editor of that magazine’s Chinese edition in 2007. He was co-curator, with Alexandra Munroe and Hou Hanru, of the 2017 exhibition Art and China after 1989: Theater of the World at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, now on view at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and opening in November at SFMOMA. In 2016 he was named a fellow of the Public Intellectuals Program of the National Committee on U.S.- China Relations. Fluent in Mandarin and based in Beijing since 2001, Tinari holds degrees from Duke and Harvard, and is currently completing a doctorate in art history at Oxford.

This talk is co-presented by the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, the Confucius Institute, and UMMA, and coincides with the UMMA exhibition Wang Qingsong/Detroit/Beijing (February 2 - May 26, 2019).

Lead support for Wang Qingsong/Detroit/Beijing is provided by the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation, the Confucius Institute at the University of Michigan, the University of Michigan Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies, and the Herbert W. and  Susan L. Johe Endowment.

Organized By: Runyonland Productions

The iconic 1981 musical by legendary composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim is being boldly brought to life through a staged concert production in the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre. Merrily We Roll Along moves backwards in time, exploring the life of three friends from their disenchanted adulthood to the bright-eyed optimism of their youth, exploring all the choices they made along the way. The production will feature a full 15-piece orchestra sharing the stage with the actors.

Director Megumi Nakamura, a Senior in the renowned University of Michigan Musical Theatre Department, is thrilled to be taking on the challenging musical, saying,

“For any student or enthusiast of musical theater, getting to work on a musical written by Stephen Sondheim is both a daunting and exhilarating experience. The music and story of this play are beautiful and widely relatable, but because of what some label as a challenging script, the show is seldom produced. Consequently, getting the opportunity to direct this show with some of the best young musical theater actors and designers in the country is an enormously thrilling and unique opportunity.”
