How does one make performance during a pandemic? In this talk Dr. Arthur looks at the unique ways that artists have addressed HIV/AIDS to answer this question. Considering theatrical interventions by Karen Finley and Demian DinéYazhi´, Dr. Arthur argues that performance created in response to HIV/AIDS can teach us to challenge dominant narratives about a virus and strategies for living through an ongoing pandemic.

Marc Arthur is an artist and scholar who holds a PhD in Performance Studies from New York University (2019). He is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in Arts-based Social Justice Research and Practice at the University of Michigan where he is studying the role of directing, devised theatre, dramatic writing, and acting in achieving diversity, equity, and inclusion. His research and teaching interests encompass contemporary performance and theatre practice, dramatic literature and history, performance studies, queer theory, and critical ethnic studies. He is currently working on his first book project entitled, An Imagined Virus: Theatre, Memory, and the Politics of AIDS, which argues that artists use performance to restage the AIDS crisis by enacting dramaturgies of transformation and new forms of biomedical embodiment.

His academic writing and criticism has appeared in edited volumes and journals including Bomb Magazine, Yale’s Theater, the book Viral Dramaturgies: HIV and AIDS in Performance in the Twenty-First Century, as well as numerous art catalogues. He has also written extensively for Performa Magazine, where he is a Contributing Editor. From 2011 – 2017 he was the Head of Research and Archives at Performa where he organized touring exhibitions, curated programs, led interdisciplinary research projects with a wide range of artists, and spearheaded the acquisition of the Performa collection by NYU’s Fales Library.

As an artist and director, he has developed a new form of performance that incorporates methods from devised theatre, dance, painting, and socially engaged art. His work has been presented at theatres and galleries internationally, including the Martha Graham Dance Theater, La MaMa E.T.C., Dixon Place, The Living Theater, Movement Research at Judson Church, the Bronx Academy of Arts & Dance, the Wild Project, University Settlement, and Chashama in New York City; New Langton Arts and David Cunningham Projects, San Francisco; Moyse Theatre at McGill University, Montreal; Xavier Hufkens Gallery, Brussels; the Emily Harvey Foundation, Venice; Universität der Künste, Berlin; and FRISE, Hamburg.

In this new virtual series, Center for World Performance Studies invites performers and scholars from diverse disciplines to reflect on how performance is being used to respond to the political, social, health and environmental crises that we face at this moment. Each guest will give a 30 minute presentation, and then engage in 30 minutes of Q&A. Sessions will take place over Zoom and require advance registration. You can read about the panelists, register for these events, find recommended reading and resources and/or request recordings of past events at https://lsa.umich.edu/world-performance.

When Ken Fischer retired after 30 years as president of the University Musical Society in 2017, many of his friends and colleagues repeatedly told him, “Ken, you should write a book! You have so many great stories.”

Ken took that advice, and we’re delighted to announce that Everybody In, Nobody Out: Inspiring Community at Michigan’s University Musical Society is now available from University of Michigan Press, with a wonderful foreword by Wynton Marsalis.

During this virtual book launch, John U. Bacon, Ann Arbor author, speaker, tv and radio commentator, and longtime friend of Ken’s, will interview Ken about his book, highlighting some of the wonderful stories Ken shares from his three decades at UMS and a lifetime in the arts.

This book launch is co-presented by Literati Bookstore and University of Michigan Press Great Lakes.

Required text: Robert Fagles, Sophocles: The Three Theban Plays

Instructor Marilyn Scott will lead this study group on Wednesdays from
September 23 through October 28 from 1-3 p.m. “Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

In this session, Cardona Otero will depart from his most recent performance art piece, Taxonomía of a Spicy Espécimen, to engage in a conversation about his work in the arts and in education. In Cardona’s words: “I’m a work in progress. As well, more and more I am understanding my performative art and pedagogy as works in progress. I am affected by this pandemic racism, this antiblackness, this sexism, and this state of white supremacy; and this infection affects what and how I craft and enact.”

Javier Cardona Otero is a performing artist, critical educator, and facilitator of art experiences as education. His artistic scholarship, which has been presented throughout the Caribbean, Latin America and the United States, seeks to critically investigate sociocultural capitals particularly regarded to issues of race, gender, and the environment. His work is interdisciplinary and intersectional, focusing on art-making as research and embodied artwork as pedagogy. Currently, Javier is a Curriculum and Instruction PhD student in the Arts Education Program at Indiana University-Bloomington.

If you require an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact the Center for World Performance Studies, at 734-936-2777. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

"The fire raced along the fuse line and incensed;
We rose to burn it all down."

"Across the nation and the globe, we all-knowing and all-conquering human beings find ourselves - for lack of a better way to phrase it - in a corner. In the corner, on a universally ordered timeout like misbehaving children. We were sent from schools, workplaces, nightclubs, bars, and places to eat to our homes to wait, like Didi and Gogo in Becketts' Waiting for Godot— awaiting the arrival of Godot, who never arrives. We were sent home to wait for a safer moment in time for our collective existence, which has yet to come. Sent home to sit in timeout to reflect, reevaluate, and heal as a people and a nation. Dumbfoundedly, we watched the drafted news reports of lives lost to COVID-19 awe-struck by our leaders' indifference to the severity of the moment. Yet, with all those pots boiling over, we heard of a woman who lost her life when startled from slumber in Louisville, we watched one human-being gunned down while jogging in Georgia, and yet another human-being deliberately robbed of breath for 8m46sec in Minnesota. As if the death of all those individual lives lost to COVID-19 thus far were not enough, we return to extinguishing Black lives.

As an Afro-Dominican American, it is interesting to exist in a world designed to erase your existence. As a brown-skinned actor, it is devastating to come to terms with my role in that process of self-erasure. I have navigated between theatrical parts that reinforce negative stereotypes and those that made me question if my performance training would be enough to overcome the cultural discrepancy between myself and the character. It is a question that most often comes up when assuming non-white character roles, which underscores my complicity in my self-erasure. When the color of one's skin and the racially discriminatory experiences lived is drowned by the loud narratives that support– despite evidence— that racism does not exist. What does one do? When one's cultural background is not enough to garner a role or bring authenticity and truth to a character of perhaps African American descent, what does the actor do? When does Black equate to one's culture, and when does it not? Why am I at first glance considered black and then by some not black enough? This presentation aims to address performing one's culture within the context of racial consciousness. Performing an Afro-Dominican-American in New York City."

Antonio Disla, aka Antonio Garcia, is an Afro-Caribbean Dominican-American theatre practitioner, born and raised in New York City. He holds an M.F.A. in Performance from The Ohio State University. Since 2012, Antonio has taught at State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz, in both the Department of Theatre Arts and the Department of Communication. As a Solo Artist, he has written and devised both site-specific and staged works dealing with identity and race. Of his works, the notables to date are Nobody, a solo piece about race, and Travel, which deals with identity and destiny. As a performing company member of The Shakespeare Forum, he has led workshops in the New York City Public Schools and co-taught Shakespeare for their Youth Forum program. Antonio has proudly worked with The Black Lady Theater, an African American community theatre company based in Brooklyn, in such productions as From the Brought of Brooklyn and Bone Soup.

Our focus will be on plays dealing with the Trojan War. We may do some reading aloud and will also watch one or two productions of plays. Select any translation you find enjoyable of the following plays: Aeschylus: ORESTEIA Trilogy (we will read the first two), Sophocles: ELECTRA, Euripides: IPHIGENIA IN AULIS; THE TROJAN WOMEN; HECUBA; ELECTRA; HELEN.

Instructor Marilyn Scott has led a number of OLLI study groups and has also studied many of these plays in Greek.

This study group will meet on Wednesdays from November 11 through December 16.

Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

Salakastar will be performing selections from ALL BLUE: PART ONE (MAJORELLE!) , her debut experimental R+B album and performance series. It consists of poetic healing rituals in the form of vibrant sounds, visuals, and mantras. AB: P1(M!) is a response to the urgent needs of people of color for recording and sharing untold narratives of self, land, and belonging.

Salakastar channels her ancestral spirit Majorelle to expand the African-American tradition of rhythm+blues and its lineage in relation to the generational depression experienced by descendants of the survivors of the Middle Passage and the souls that still exist in the deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean. She extends the healing quality of the color blue as it relates to the 5th chakra at the throat associated with Truth, voice, communication, and purification.

Salakastar is a Detroit born and based actor, singer-songwriter, poet, and teaching artist working in theatre, television, film, and music. She earned her BFA and completed her classical acting training at the State University of New York at Purchase College. She is an artist-in-residence at Poetic Societies, a member of the touring company of I, Too, Sing America at the Michigan Opera Theatre and a founding member of iii Sisters, a Detroit-based feminist writing ensemble. She is a 2018 Gilda Award Winner and a 2020 Kresge Artist Fellow in Live Arts awarded by the Kresge foundation.

In the new virtual series, PERFORMING THE MOVEMENT, PERFORMING THE MOMENT, Center for World Performance Studies invites performers and scholars from diverse disciplines to reflect on how performance is being used to respond to the political, social, health and environmental crises that we face at this moment.

If you require an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact the Center for World Performance Studies, at 734-936-2777. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

with additional monologues written by
Alexandra Lee and Amanda Kuo

Using dance, drag, drama, and documentary elements, A Beautiful Country chronicles 150 years of Asian-American immigration history. Miss Visa Denied, a transgender drag queen and performer, is the narrator who guides the audience through the turbulent history of Chinese, Filipino, and Japanese people coming to America. Heartfelt testimonials and the dramatization of some highly vibrant and egregious pieces of propaganda showcase the provocative events that have shaped this history. Addressing issues of race, gender, and appropriation, this play examines the fundamental questions surrounding the immigrant experience, including what it
means to be an American.

This production was filmed over two weeks in the Arthur Miller Theatre and various remote locations according to the School of Music, Theatre & Dance’s approved safety plan. All safety protocols for the performing arts to prevent the spread of Covid 19 were observed. The production will receive its premiere on Facebook and be available for one week on YouTube beginning on Wednesday, December 2nd.

Department of Musical Theatre

3 unique performances on three nights.

In theatre tradition, a ghostlight—usually a single bulb—remains on an empty stage when a theatre goes dark, to appease the spirits. Faced with the near impossibility of putting on a fully-staged production during a pandemic, the Department of Musical Theatre has chosen to provide a new kind of ghostlight: an online-only revue of the best that the department has to offer.

This faculty-led, student-driven production will feature songs, skits, and dances directed, choreographed, performed, and in some cases written by students from across the Department Musical Theatre. From classics of musical theatre to pop, folk, and jazz, this revue has it all.

University Opera Theatre & University Symphony Orchestra

Based on the short story by Karen Russell, Proving Up is an intimate and haunting look at the perils of the American Dream. Set in Nebraska in the 1870s at the height of the push west, a family of homesteaders struggles to meet the daunting requirements of the Homestead Act as they try “proving up” on their land claim. This atmospheric new chamber opera from composer Missy Mazzoli features a sparse cast and orchestra, and was selected as one of The New York Times’ Best Classical Music of 2018 selections.

Wendell Pierce Stars in Some Old Black Man (January 15, 2021 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/80493 80493-20730267@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, January 15, 2021 7:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Engineering

Written only a few years before the history-making events of 2020, Some Old Black Man frames racial prejudice with bold probity rarely confronted and dramatized. It challenges people of all ages to learn about the unique perspective of elders whose lived struggles created opportunities for future generations and to confront the experiential divides that can grow larger due to generational differences.

In the play, Calvin Jones (Wendell Pierce), a hip, coolly intellectual African-American college professor moves his 82-year-old ailing, but doggedly independent, father, Donald Jones (Charlie Robinson), from Greenwald, MS into his Harlem penthouse. The play begins with an argument over what to eat for breakfast, then turns into a generational clash over race, opportunity, and a decision that Calvin made years ago. Donald’s grumpiness is peppered with disturbing outbursts, revealing bits of his past, informed by growing up Black and poor in the South.

Themes of social justice themes and intergenerational conflict make Some Old Black Man a fitting title for our times, when the reality of more togetherness unveils some of the tensions underlying even the closest of relationships.

The play was filmed in Detroit after the creative team quarantined together during rehearsals in Ann Arbor under strict safety protocols.

After the digital premiere, join the creative team for a live talkback. Production will be available on demand through Monday, January 18.

After the digital premiere, join the creative team for a live talkback. Production will be available on demand through Monday, January 18.

This open-ended discussion forum will center around various “keywords” of your choosing. We invite you all to contribute a keyword or theme that you are currently thinking about in relation to your own research. Our goal with this virtual event is to think collectively, form connections, and inspire creative directions.

You do not need to come prepared with a presentation, but merely an idea, thought, or question centered around your chosen word. Equally, there is no requirement that you come prepared to discuss a specific keyword if you would prefer to attend as a listener/respondent.

For inspiration, you might turn to the Victorian Literature and Culture 'Keywords' double-issue containing hundreds of mini-essays on keywords.

Say Her Name…Too

This will be a discussion moderated by Dr. Antonio C. Cuyler and Professor Lawrence M. Jackson about the spaces that lie between Dance and Social Activism. This event will feature a screen dance viewing of Dance artist Lawrence M. Jackson’s work, “Say Her Name…Too." A short screen dance, this work will combine cinematic elements with choreography and explores the lives of 5 Black women who died at the hands of law enforcement. The goal of this work is to bring awareness to the often-invisible names and stories of Black women and girls who have been victimized by racist police violence. Black women have been killed by the police at alarming rates, though we rarely hear their names. Knowing their names is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for lifting up their stories which in turn provides a much clearer view of the wide-ranging circumstances that make Black women’s bodies disproportionately subject to police violence. To lift up their stories, and illuminate police violence against Black women, we need to know who they are, how they lived, and why they suffered at the hands of police…this film aims to do just that…

In March 2001, the University of Michigan Center for World Performance Studies (CWPS) celebrated its grand opening, inviting the community to participate in an evening of lectures, performances and food at the International Institute. As part of the ongoing virtual celebration of this milestone, CWPS invites four esteemed U-M faculty members to reflect on the Center’s founding, its contributions to increasing the diversity of arts and research at University of Michigan, and to imagine the possibilities for the next twenty years.

Kwasi Ampene, Associate Professor in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies, is a scholar and practitioner of ethnomusicology. He specializes in the rich musical traditions of the Akan people of West Africa. His research interests include the performing arts as individually and collectively created and experienced, the performance of historical and social memory, politics, ideologies, values, and religious philosophy in Akan court music. Professor Ampene’s latest book, *Asante Court Music and Verbal Arts in Ghana: The Porcupine and the Gold Stool*, was published on June 30th, 2020 by Routledge. Dr. Ampene was Director of the Center for World Performance Studies from 2011-2016.

Lester Monts is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Music (ethnomusicology). From 1993 until 2014, he served as senior vice provost for academic affairs and senior counselor to the president for the arts, diversity, and undergraduate affairs. He is currently director of the Michigan Musical Heritage Project that seeks to capture on film the state’s folk, ethnic, and immigrant music traditions. Monts received a bachelor’s degree in music education from Arkansas Polytechnic College, a master’s degree in trumpet performance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and a doctorate in ethnomusicology from the University of Minnesota.

Mbala Nkanga is an Associate Professor of Theatre and head of the minor in Global Theatre & Ethnic Studies. A native of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, he taught directing, scenography and dramaturgical analysis at the Institut National des Arts in Kinshasa (DRC) beginning in 1979. He has directed plays in various professional companies there, such as Bernard Dadié’s Béatrice du Congo, Wole Soyinka’s A Dance of the Forests, and Réné Kalisky’s Aïda Vaincue. Dr. Nkanga received his PhD in Performance Studies from Northwestern University, and has led the Center for World Performance Studies graduate seminar since 1999.

Robin Wilson is an Associate Professor of Dance at the University of Michigan, on the faculty since 1995, and is best known as a founding member of New York’s Urban Bush Women. In 1995, she was awarded a New York Performance Award for the collective work of the Urban Bush Women from 1984-1994. Her studio teaching is informed by years of study in various mid-twentieth century modern dance and Afro-Caribbean folkloric dance techniques. She performed in New York for more than a decade with such choreographers as Dianne McIntyre, Kevin Wynn, and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar. Professor Wilson served on the Center for World Performance Studies faculty advisory committee for over a decade.

In this virtual series, Center for World Performance Studies invites performers and scholars from diverse disciplines to reflect on how performance is being used to respond to the political, social, health and environmental crises that we face at this moment. For this session, Dr. Ramón H. Rivera-Servera will discuss his recent research in Puerto Rico, including an innovative outreach initiative to assist Puerto Rican artists in the aftermath of hurricanes Maria and Irma. Participants can learn about this research ahead of the session by visiting the Mellon Foundation blog: https://mellon.org/shared-experiences-blog/after-storm/

Ramón H. Rivera-Servera is chair of the Department of Performance Studies and the Department of Theatre in the School of Communication at Northwestern University, and was recently appointed as the next dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on 20th and 21st Century performance in North America and the Caribbean with special emphasis on the ways categories of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality are negotiated across national borders through migratory circuits of circulation and exchange. His work documents a wide array of performance practices ranging from theatre and concert dance to social dance, popular music, fashion, and speech.

He is author of *Performing Queer Latinidad: Dance, Sexuality, Politics* (University of Michigan Press, 2012), a study of the role performance played in the development of Latina/o queer publics in the United States from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s.

He is currently completing a book manuscript, *Reggaetón’s Queer Turn: Sexuality, Abstraction, and Contemporary Art in the Circum-Caribbean*, which pursues feminist and queer uptakes of the popular music and dance cultures of reggaetón in circum-Caribbean contemporary art to theorize the role of black aesthetics in the sexual cultural politics of the Spanish speaking Caribbean and its diaspora. He is also conducting fieldwork and archival research towards two other projects: *Exhibiting Performance: Race, Museum Cultures, and the Live Event*, which looks at the ways race has been collected and exhibited in North America and the Caribbean since the mid-1990s and *Choreographing the Latina/o Post-Modern: Puerto Rican Moves in the New York Dance Avant-Garde*, a cultural history of Puerto Rican participation in the New York City experimental dance scene since the 1980s.

For two weeks every February, Trinity Laban’s usual creative atmosphere gets supercharged. There are no lectures, no classes, no assignments. That’s because it’s time for CoLab, their eccentric two‑week festival of creativity and innovation. For the 2021 CoLab, 10 SMTD students spent a week at Trinity Laban working alongside students to devise and perform interdisciplinary works through the city of London. Join SMTD faculty supervisor Jonathan Kuuskoski and a member of the Trinity Laban team to learn more about the CoLab experience, understand how SMTD students are selected for this opportunity, and share our hopes for what SMTD participation might look like in the February 2022.

Assistant Professor Malcolm Tulip guides the Department of Musical Theatre students in this expressionist approach to one of Shakespeare’s best-known romantic comedies. What might appear at first look to be a romantic game is at its roots a test of binary gender assignations and expectations, made all the more interesting by the challenge of depicting romance when your actors must stay 6 feet apart.
