Ancient graffiti provide a unique glimpse into the lives of individuals in antiquity. Religious devotion in ancient Kush (a region located in modern-day northern Sudan), involved pilgrimage and leaving informal marks on temples, pyramids, and other monumental structures. These graffiti are found in temples throughout the later (“Meroitic”) period of Kush, when it bordered Roman Egypt. They represent one of the few direct traces of the devotional practices of private people in Kush and hint at individuals’ thoughts, values, and daily lives.

On this tour, led by the curators of the exhibition, explore the times and places in which Kushite graffiti were inscribed through photos, text, and interactive media presentations. At the heart of the show are the hundreds of Meroitic graffiti recently discovered by the Kelsey expedition to El-Kurru in northern Sudan.

Curator tours are free and open to all visitors. Curatorial Tour of Border Control: Traversing Horizons in Media Practice (September 21, 2019 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/66988 66988-16792091@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, September 21, 2019 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Join us for an exhibition tour of Border Control: Traversing Horizons in Media Practice with curator Allison Collins, Media Arts Curator, Western Front.

Human migration is a defining issue of the 21st century, often calling into question the relevance, role, and responsibilities of national borders across the globe. As individuals seek refuge from geopolitical and environmental forces, we become an increasingly globalized community. Demarcations of all types are simultaneously porous and closed, defensive and receptive, and seen in almost every facet of our existence. Border Control: Traversing Horizons in Media Practice responds to these conditions with an open-ended question, asking: “How has humanity made sense of the world in relation to borders and boundaries, both physically and psychologically?” While positioned within (or outside of) defined spaces and identities, human refusal of such literal definitions is paramount. Even while lines drawn have important consequences for lived reality, the winds, currents, and natural energies of the Earth deny enclosures and definitions that politics and maps might suggest.

Drawn from practices that are touched or driven by new media, Border Control: Traversing Horizons in Media Practice assembles works by artists who consider geographical contexts, patterns of migration, displacement, and statelessness. Collectively, they offer projects with subterfuge, refusal, and reconsideration of imposed state-sanctioned boundaries.

Artists: Annabel Castro, Mahwish Chishty, Lyn Goeringer, Ryan Griffis & Sarah Ross, Kate Hollenbach, Carrie Hott, X.A. Li, Rebekah Modrak, Abhishek Narula, Joel Ong, Jon Packles, Aislinn E. Pentecost-Farren, Susan Rochester, José Carlos Teixeira, Alex Turner, and Sabato Visconti.

Short films by: Nadav Assor, Anxious to Make (Liat Berdugo + Emily Martinez), Yaminay Chaudhri, Andrew Demirjian, José Guadalupe Garza & Miriam Ruíz, and Rick Silva.

Border Control: Traversing Horizons in Media Practiceis curated by Allison Collins in collaboration with Carrie Edinger and Srimoyee Mitra and presented in partnership with the New Media Caucus.

A first hand account of how the isolated Inuit community of Kinngait became the internationally celebrated art capital of the North.

A portrait of the Kinngait Studios celebrating its 50th year of continuous successful operation; the film introduces the remarkable artists who overcame cultural barriers and the hardships of a harsh environment to give birth to a vivid new expression of Inuit life. It tells of how the tiny, isolated community of Kinngait (Cape Dorset), against all odds, turned the making of art into a multimillion dollar co-operative business run by the Inuit townsfolk. Richly illustrated with the work of successive generations of Kinngait artists expressing the immense changes experienced by Inuit to their way of life and environment over the past half-century.

On this tour, explore the times and places in which Kushite graffiti were inscribed through photos, text, and interactive media presentations. At the heart of the show are the hundreds of Meroitic graffiti recently discovered in a rock-cut temple by the Kelsey expedition to El-Kurru in northern Sudan.

Saturday Sampler tours are free and open to all visitors. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this tour, please call the Kelsey at 734-764-9304 at least two weeks in advance. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

The tour for those 50 and over will delve into the history and influence of Daniel Defoe’s "The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe", first published in 1719. In the 300 years since its publication, Defoe’s narrative of shipwreck and survival has captured readers’ imaginations, inspiring a multitude of adaptations and spin-offs, and becoming a cultural touchstone. Featuring material from the University of Michigan Library Special Collections Research Center’s Hubbard Imaginary Voyages Collection, the exhibit explores questions about self-sufficiency, otherness, and the role of gendered and racialized ideas in constructing the self.

U-M Museum Studies Department Presents: "The Unvarnished Truth": Reframing the National Narrative at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (October 22, 2019 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/68060 68060-16988234@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, October 22, 2019 7:00pm

Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

The U-M Museum Studies Department is pleased to present William S. Pretzer, Senior Curator of History, Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture

The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture opened on the National Mall in Washington, DC, in September 2016.  More than six million individuals have visited the museum in its first three years of operation.

The Presidential Commission created in 2001 directed the museum to “give voice to the centrality of the African American experience and make it possible for all people to understand the depth, complexity, and promise of the American experience.”

From the beginning, Founding Director Lonnie G. Bunch III and his staff heeded the exhortation of historian John Hope Franklin, chair of the museum’s Scholarly Advisory Committee, “to tell the unvarnished truth.” That principle energized an exhibition plan informed by public conversations, a collecting program relying on individual and family legacies, a narrative format balancing the personal with the social, and a funding strategy emphasizing the “African American experience as the lens through which we understand what it is to be American.”

This presentation demonstrates the impact of these foundational principles and strategies through an illustrated tour of the inaugural exhibitions.

This program is co-sponsored by the University of Michigan Museum of Art.

When you visit the Kelsey Museum, do you find yourself wondering how the artifacts on display were excavated? What techniques were used in the 1920s versus today? What can an artifact really tell us about the life of someone who lived thousands of years ago and very far away? On this tour, we’ll answer these questions by looking closely at artifacts from the ancient Near East, Greece, Egypt, and Rome.

Saturday Sampler tours are free and open to all visitors. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this tour, please call the Kelsey at 734-764-9304 at least two weeks in advance. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

Circus without Borders is a documentary about Guillaume Saladin and Yamoussa Bangoura, best friends and world-class acrobats from remote corners of the globe who share the same dream: To bring hope and change to their struggling communities through circus. Their dream unfolds in the Canadian Arctic and Guinea, West Africa, where they help Inuit and Guinean youth achieve unimaginable success while confronting suicide, poverty and despair. Seven years in the making, this tale of two circuses–Artcirq and Kalabante–is a culture-crossing performance piece that offers a portal into two remote communities, and an inspiring story of resilience and joy.

Seal hunting, a critical part of Inuit life, has been controversial for a long time. Now, a new generation of Inuit, armed with social media and their own sense of humor and justice, are challenging the anti-sealing groups and bringing their own voices into the conversation. Director Alethea Arnaquq-Baril joins her fellow Inuit activists as they challenge outdated perceptions of Inuit and present themselves to the world as a modern people in dire need of a sustainable economy.

Saturday Sampler Tour | Newberry Hall and the Tiffany Window (November 2, 2019 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/67050 67050-16796482@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, November 2, 2019 2:00pm
Location: Kelsey Museum of Archaeology
Organized By: Kelsey Museum of Archaeology

"I've always wondered what was in this building" is a common refrain from visitors to the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. Completed in 1891, Newberry Hall is one of the oldest buildings on the University of Michigan campus. Join us on a guided walk through this Richardsonian Romanesque building and learn about its architecture and fascinating history.

The highlight of the tour is an up-close view of the glorious Tiffany stained-glass window in the Kelsey Museum library. Julia Truettner, U-M preservationist and building historian, describes the window as follows:

"The Fox memorial window utilizes many kinds of glass, including roundels and chunks or nuggets, as well as plated layers, to produce a range of colors from rich claret and deep sapphire to greens, golds, and lighter shades of pinks, yellows, and blues. The abstract design incorporates not only geometric forms but also floral and vegetable motifs, such as the green pods around the perimeter and the petal-like forms at the bottom, which embrace the panels naming the honorees. These forms, plus the medallion at the top with its floral images surrounded by roundels, hint at Tiffany's coming mastery of landscape, figural, and ecclesiastical designs."

Space on the tour is limited to 30 participants. Please register by emailing cperson@umich.edu.

Saturday Sampler tours are free and open to all visitors. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this tour, please call the Kelsey at 734-764-9304 at least two weeks in advance. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

Meet Me at UMMA: A Museum Arts Experience for Persons with Mild Memory Loss and Their Care Partners (November 3, 2019 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/65665 65665-16629874@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, November 3, 2019 3:00pm
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Meet Me at UMMA invites people with mild memory loss to enjoy a guided gallery experience along with family members or care partners. This program is designed for people who live at home and their companions.

If you or someone you care about is experiencing mild memory loss, research has shown that the visual and expressive arts can be good for your mind. In addition, great enjoyment is to be found in seeking out the sights, sounds, textures, and good feelings that come with looking at, learning, and sharing feelings about paintings, music, and other creative arts.

UMMA's trained docents will accompany small groups for a guided tour and provide the opportunity for everyone to experience different kinds of art and share their responses.

Meet Me at UMMA is generously supported by the Monroe-Brown Foundation Discretionary Fund for Outreach to the State of Michigan and individual donors.

Have you ever wondered how traffic lights respond in real-time and coordinate to relieve congestion? Have you ever seen highway information boards with travel time estimates and wanted to know where they came from? Or maybe you’ve wondered how emergency responders coordinate to respond to traffic accidents on the highway?

This Friday, 11/22, the Michigan Transportation Student Organization (MiTSO) will be offering a tour of the Oakland County Traffic Operations Center (TOC). The TOC is responsible for monitoring all county intersections in real-time, adjusting traffic lights and coordinating them as necessary to reduce congestion. Additionally, they coordinate with emergency response and law enforcement in order to respond to and clear accidents that block the roads.

The tour will be at 1pm and transportation will be provided. We will be leaving GG Brown at 11:30am and will return by 5pm. More details will be provided closer to the event.

If you are interested in attending, please fill out the google form (https://forms.gle/qakMZ8u2DBotAnj56) by noon on Wednesday (11/20) if you are interested so that we can organize transportation!

Help build our collection of “ordinary” American 20th-century photographs by joining Assistant Curator of Photography, Jennifer M. Friess, for an interactive tour in the new ArtGym gallery.  We will discuss the significance of “everyday” photographs, the sometimes unknowable stories of these historic images, and what the photographs might contribute to UMMA’s permanent collection for future audiences. Visit the gallery, reflect on our long history of photographing ourselves and our experiences, and then cast your vote for your favorites!

Support for this exhibition is provided by Cecilia and Mark Vonderheide and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Department of Film, Television, and Media, and Department of American Culture.
