Positive Links:
The Positive Links Speaker Series, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations, offers inspiring and practical research-based strategies for building organizations that are high performing and bring out the best in its people. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

Positive Links sessions take place at Michigan Ross, and are free and open to the public.

About the talk:
We have little control over our environment and the challenges that come our way. But there is something we can do about our internal environment: the state of our mind, our ability to handle challenges, and bounce back. In this session, Seppälä will explore different empirically validated techniques to improve our emotional intelligence, our social connection, and our ability to endure and thrive no matter what comes our way.

About Seppälä:
Emma Seppälä, PhD is Science Director of Stanford University’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education and the author of The Happiness Track (HarperOne, 2016). She is Co-Director of the Yale College Emotional Intelligence Project at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, and Faculty Director of the Yale School of Management’s Women’s Leadership Program.

She consults with Fortune 500 leaders and employees on building a positive organization. She has spoken at TedX Sacramento, TEDx Hayward, and companies like Google, Apple, Facebook, Bain & Co, Ernst & Young, and a United States Congressional Hearing. Her articles have been featured in Harvard Business Review, The Washington Post, Business Insider, Psychology Today, Fast Company, Forbes, The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, and NPR. She has also been a repeat guest on Good Morning America.

Host:
Kim Cameron, co-founder of the Center for Positive Organizations; William Russell Kelly Professor Emeritus of Business Administration; Professor Emeritus of Higher Education

Sponsors:
The Center for Positive Organizations thanks University of Michigan Organizational Learning, Sanger Leadership Center, Tauber Institute for Global Operations, Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, Lisa and David (MBA ‘87) Drews, and Diane (BA ‘73) and Paul (MBA ‘75) Jones for their support of the 2019-20 Positive Links Speaker Series.

What if your ability to succeed in your classes was determined in part before you even stepped into the classroom? What is the one quality you need to overcome adversity academically and in life? This workshop will detail the research of Dr. Carol Dweck and her groundbreaking work on the concept of mindset. Students will learn how to abandon a debilitating fixed mindset in favor of a growth mindset, leading to success in areas they once considered too difficult. The workshop will also introduce students to the research of Dr. Angela Duckworth, and how a growth mindset can lead to the development of grit, an essential characteristic to overcoming our fear of failure.

The study and learning strategies students often bring to college are often insufficient to help them succeed at the university level. Particularly in challenging STEM courses, students can't simply memorize or cram their way to a good grade. This workshop will focus on the popular learning strategies to avoid, as well as the top three strategies you don't know but are shown by research to be the most effective for long-term learning.

Creativity is responsible for all human progress. Unfortunately, powerful forces in most classroom, workplace, and home environments can kill the motivation for creativity. In this interactive session, Harvard Professor Teresa Amabile will describe the science underlying these discoveries, as well as the science behind keeping creativity alive. The audience will leave with tips and tools for nurturing their own creativity and facilitating creative growth in their children, students, and work colleagues.

About Amabile:
Teresa Amabile has researched and written about creativity for over 40 years. Beginning with a series of papers in the 1970s and 1980s, she was instrumental in establishing the social psychology of creativity – the study of how the social environment can influence creative behavior, primarily by influencing motivational state.

Amabile’s research has examined individual creativity and productivity, team creativity, and organizational innovation. This program of research has yielded a comprehensive theory of creativity and innovation; methods for assessing creativity, motivation, and the work environment; and a set of prescriptions for maintaining and stimulating both individual creativity and organizational innovation.

Her more recent research investigated how everyday life inside organizations can influence people and their performance by affecting inner work life, the confluence of motivation, emotion, and perceptions. She is currently studying retirement and post-employment life, including the impact of creative activities on attitudes toward aging and experiences in later life.

Amabile’s scholarly work has appeared in a variety of psychology and organizational behavior journals, as well as her 2011 book (with Steven Kramer), The Progress Principle: Using Small Wins to Ignite Joy, Engagement, and Creativity at Work. She has presented her work to audiences in a variety of settings, including Pixar, Genentech, TEDx Atlanta, Apple, and The World Economic Forum in Davos.

In 2018, Amabile received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management, the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Israel Organizational Behavior Conference, and the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. In 2011 and 2013, she was named to the global Thinkers50 list.

Amabile holds a BS in Chemistry from Canisius College and a PhD in psychology from Stanford University.

Host:
Julia Lee, Assistant Professor of Management and Organizations

Lisa Smith, Health Coach, founder of Black Health Academy

After graduating from Michigan with a bachelors in psychology Lisa went on to work as a social worker for The State of Michigan for over four years, however after getting her MBA and discovering a passion for health and wellness she set her sights on entrepreneurship. Once Lisa aggressively conquered her physical health and regained her confidence she set herself on a purpose driven course which led her to launch Professionally Fit in July of 2015 and The Black Health Academy in October of 2017. Lisa also serves as the new Executive Director of the Plant Based Nutrition Support Group, a 6500 member nonprofit organization. Serial entrepreneur, health and wellness subject matter expert, plant based nutritionist, author, and professional speaker are all but a few titles to describe Lisa A. Smith. She now finds she is constantly applying her degree in psychology to her work in coaching, speaking and teaching life long behavior change in the health and wellness field. She has helped many to bridge the gap between their health and career, fight chronic disease and become Professionally Fit!

Stephanie (Colbert) Gaumer, Clinical Therapist at Counseling Centers of Michigan

Stephanie’s career path started at Michigan’s Psychology Department where she took a variety of classes surrounding the brain and child development. These interests led her to volunteering at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital where she learned that many employees had backgrounds in social work. She went on to pursue a Master in Social Work at Loyola University Chicago with a focus in health and a specialty in working with older adults. After graduate school, she worked at a neurofeedback provider for 3 years where she expanded her knowledge on the connection between the brain and mental health. In her desire to broaden her social work career, she moved to the more clinical approach at her current position as a Clinical Therapist at Counseling Centers of Michigan in Clarkston, MI. She has received training in a variety of therapeutic techniques and she works with clients of all ages surrounding mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, OCD, anger management and emotional regulation, as well as peak performance in sport and life. This position has been very rewarding to her as she develops relationships with clients and walks alongside them as they achieve their goals. While in Ann Arbor, she also competed for the Women’s Gymnastics team. Her experience within the athletic department showed her that athletes are a unique population that also experience a lot of the same mental health concerns as the general population with the added pressures of balancing sport and athletics. The sport and social work connection has become another passion of hers as she looks to help stress the importance of social workers being present within high schools, colleges and professional sports. She does this with the members of the Alliance of Social Workers in Sport where social workers around the country and Canada come together to discuss the latest advances in the field and how they can all work to expand the possibilities of social workers in a variety of settings.

Project Management Certification (October 6, 2019 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/61540 61540-15126018@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, October 6, 2019 1:00pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Tauber Institute for Global Operations

Once again, the Tauber Institute, in conjunction with the International Project Management Association (IPMA), is sponsoring a Project Management certification class and exam for graduate business and engineering students and staff.

In order to participate, you will need to reflect upon a project management experience (for example: a work project, an engineering design experience/senior capstone, Ross' MAP project, Tauber team project, etc). If you cannot make it to the classes (due to project travel, MAP, or other another class), the sessions will be recorded. Homework (mastery verification) will be required after each session.

The cost to an individual to take the exam is normally $595, however, Tauber is offering the exam at a substantial discount to non-Tauber students: $500 and to Tauber students: $150. Certification is valid for 5 years. Three certification classes will be taught by Professor Eric Svaan on the following dates:

Sunday, March 24 (1:00 - 4:30 pm, Ross 0240)
Sunday, April 7 (1:00 - 4:30 pm, Ross 0240)
Sunday, October 6 (1:00 - 4:30 pm, Ross 0240)

The certification exam, administered by IPMA-USA is scheduled for November 17, 2019 (11:00 - 3:00 pm) at the Ross School of Business. Successfully passing the exam will yield IPMA's Level D certification (Certified Project Management Associate).

Over the last two years, all students who have taken the exam have passed!

Project Management is a powerful skill set to have in your toolbox as you look for full-time employment!

REGISTRATION: Please register through iMpact by clicking here:
https://tauber.umich.edu/events-training/project-management-certification/2019-03-24/project-management-certification-2019

NOTE: The $500 (for non-Tauber students) or $150 fee (for Tauber students) is non-refundable.

HOSTED BY: Tauber Institute for Global Operations. For questions about this event, please contact tauberinstitute@umich.edu or visit tauber.umich.edu.

What is IPMA Level D® (Certified Project Management Associate)? The IPMA Level D is an internationally recognized entry-level qualification in the area of project management. This designation, which demonstrates the individual's ability to understand the basics of project management, is similar to the exam-oriented, knowledge-based certifications of other major Project Management associations. For many, Level D® is the first step towards a professional project or program manager role. It is the first step in a sequence (C, B and A) to be earned by demonstration of success in larger PM responsibility sets.

Project Management Certification (November 17, 2019 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/61540 61540-15126019@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, November 17, 2019 11:00am

Diversity initiatives are prevalent, but not necessarily effective. These initiatives at times not only fail to result in the intended consequence of increased diversity and inclusion, but also produce unintended consequences that undermine their effectiveness. In this presentation, Leslie will describe the unintended consequences diversity initiatives can produce and provide examples of how even well-intentioned efforts to foster diversity and inclusion can go astray. She will also discuss strategies for making diversity initiatives more effective and thus better leveraging the positive consequences of diversity for individuals, organizations, and societies.

About Leslie:
Lisa M. Leslie is an Associate Professor of Management and Organizations at the Stern School of Business, New York University. She received her AB in Social Psychology from Princeton University and her MA and PhD in Organizational Psychology from the University of Maryland. Prior to joining Stern in 2013, she spent six years as an Assistant Professor at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota.

Leslie’s research focuses on diversity in organizations, and specifically understanding why organizational diversity initiatives often produce unintended consequences and what can be done to make them more effective. She also has secondary research interests in cross-cultural organizational behavior and conflict management. Leslie has received many awards for her research, which has appeared in journals spanning a number of different disciplines, and has served as an Associate Editor for the Academy of Management Journal.

Host:
Lindred Greer, Associate Professor of Management and Organizations

Sponsors:
