CREES/WCED Panel. Russia’s Complex Relationship with the North Caucasus: Past and Present (January 23, 2018 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/47883 47883-11035907@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, January 23, 2018 6:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies

In 2004, a group of Islamic militants occupied a school in Beslan, in the North Caucasus region of the Russian Federation, demanding recognition for an independent Chechnya. Over three hundred hostages, including children, were killed in the siege. The dramatic event and its aftermath is the topic of the UMS performance Us/Them on January 24-28. For this panel, a group of experts will provide much-needed context and analysis of the broader situation of the North Caucasus and its complex relationship with Russia.

Pauline Jones, professor of political science, U-M
Alexander Knysh, professor of Islamic studies, U-M
Tanya Lokshina, Russia program director, Human Rights Watch
Moderator: Geneviève Zubrzycki, professor of sociology; Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia and Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies director

Pauline Jones' scholarly work contributes broadly to the study of institutional origin, change, and impact in a wide variety of settings: newly emergent states with multiple competing subnational identities, states transitioning from planned to market economies, states rich in natural resources, and states with predominantly Muslim populations. The empirical basis for her work has been primarily the former Soviet Union (FSU) -- particularly the five Central Asian republics that gained independence in 1991 (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan). However, she has also engaged in broad cross-national comparisons across regions, including Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), utilizing a combination of controlled case comparisons and statistical analysis. Future research will explore the institutionalization of secularism and the politics of extremism, focusing on countries with predominantly Muslim populations.

Alexander Knysh is professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Michigan and principal investigator of a research project on political Islam/Islamism sponsored by the Rectorate of the St. Petersburg State University, Russia. His academic interests include Islamic mysticism (Sufism); Qur’anic studies; the history of Muslim theological, philosophical, and juridical thought; and modern Islamic/Islamist movements in comparative perspective. He has numerous academic and instructional publications on these subjects, including twelve books. Since 2006, he has served as section editor for “Sufism” on the editorial board of the "Encyclopedia of Islam, Third Edition" (E.J. Brill, Leiden and Boston). He is also executive editor of the "Encyclopedia of Islamic Mysticism" and the "Handbooks of Islamic Mysticism" series associated with it (E.J. Brill, Leiden).

Tanya Lokshina is the Russia program director and a senior researcher at Human Rights Watch and is based in Moscow. Having joined Human Rights Watch in January 2008, Lokshina authored several reports on egregious abuses in Russia’s turbulent North Caucasus region and co-authored a report on violations of international humanitarian law during the 2008 armed conflict in Georgia. Her recent publications include a range of materials on Russia’s vicious crackdown on critics of the government and on violations of international humanitarian law during the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine. Lokshina is a recipient of the 2006 Andrei Sakharov Award, “Journalism as an Act of Conscience.” Her articles on human rights issues have been featured in prominent Russian and foreign media outlets, including CNN, the Guardian, Le Monde, the Moscow Times, Novaya Gazeta, and the Washington Post. Lokshina’s books include "Chechnya Inside Out" and "Imposition of a Fake Political Settlement in the Northern Caucasus." In 2014, her article on the abusive virtue campaign against women in Chechnya was published in "Chechnya at War and Beyond" (Routledge Contemporary Russia and Eastern Europe Series).

Out of the Silence celebrates the musical life of African Americans living during the late-19th and early-20th centuries. Mixing spoken narrative and live musical performances, this evening will explore the meaning of classical music to African American individuals and communities, provide insights into the social uplift music fostered in those communities, and create an awareness of the challenges faced and successes enjoyed by African American musicians.

Out of the Silence will be told through seldom-heard works by the black American composers William Grant Still, Florence Price, Harry Freeman, Harry T. Burleigh, and Margaret Bonds, among others, accompanied by images that capture these musicians and others at work. Many of these items are drawn from the rich collections held at the University of Michigan Music Library and the E. Azalia Hackley Collection of African Americans in the Performing Arts at the Detroit Public Library. Special guests will include professor emeritus and renowned bass Willis Patterson and the 2017 Kresge Eminent Artist, harpist Patricia Terry-Ross, and Elizabeth James, Program Manager and Outreach Coordinator in the U-M Department of Afroamerican and African Studies.. Presented on the occasion of the University of Michigan’s 2018 Martin Luther King, Jr. Symposium, this performance is a collaboration with the U-M Museum of Art, School of Music, Theatre & Dance, U-M’s Gershwin Initiative and the School of Music, Theatre & Dance / University Musical Society’s concert production of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess.

This performance, co-curated by Leah Claiborne and Austin Stewart, is presented as part of the SMTD@UMMA Performance Series which presents 6-8 unique performances each year that connect with the exhibitions, collections, and spaces of UMMA and showcases the talent of SMTD faculty, students and staff.

How can the body be a laboratory for examining dialogue, choice-making, roles and habits? In this interactive workshop, choreographer and King-Chavez-Parks Visiting Artist Eryn Rosenthal will share some of her research on the connections between a dance form called Contact Improvisation and the political writings of Steve Biko, Ada Colau, Paolo Freire, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, Judith Butler, and others. What can the body bring to larger discussions of dialogue-building, inclusion, resilience and empowerment?

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that you can bend, move and stretch in. No experience necessary, and all bodies, abilities and backgrounds are actively welcome. This workshop includes talking, moving and listening.

Refreshments will be provided.

Choreographer and CEW Scholar Alum Eryn Rosenthal examines the democratic underpinnings of Contact Improvisation and the role of the body in transgressing previously legislated boundaries. She has worked with choreographers Sello Pesa, poet Elizabeth Alexander, and documentary theatre pioneer Anna Deavere Smith, among others. Eryn’s ongoing series The Doors Project investigates transitions–political, social, intimate–through site-based performance in different doorways around the world. Eryn holds a BA from Yale University and an MFA in Dance from U-M, where she also studied in the Ford School for Public Policy. She has performed and taught throughout the US, South Africa and Europe, and is currently teaching an interdisciplinary performance course at U-M's Residential College. She is delighted to be back at U-M as a King-Chávez-Parks Visiting Professor and Artist in Residence for Dialogue-Building, Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives. www.erynrosenthal.com
