This talk brings together the creative team behind Triptych (Eyes of One on Another), a University Musical Society (UMS) co-commission exploring the work of Robert Mapplethorpe. The production will enjoy its world premiere on Friday, March 15, and Saturday, March 16 at the Power Center Composer Bryce Dessner and librettist Korde Arrington Tuttle will discuss the range of artistic influences that informed Mapplethorpe’s work — and how the production translates the visual medium into an interdisciplinary experience. Thirty years after the death of Mapplethorpe, we still cannot turn away from what his photos reveal. Mapplethorpe’s work both unites and divides viewers, provoking a consideration of perceived opposites: black/white, male/female, gay/straight, art/porn, classical/contemporary. His pictures seduce, shock, offend, excite, intrigue, and scare us all at once. Triptych seeks to make theatrical the ways Mapplethorpe’s works compel an audience’s complicity and characterize them in the act of attention.

Co-presented with the University Musical Society (UMS).

Omar Offendum’s residency culminates with a work-in-progress performance. Set amidst the backdrop of the fabled Little Syria neighborhood in NYC (1880-1940), this unique performance project bridges hip-hop & live Arabic instrumentation with the time-honored “Hakawati” storytelling traditions of the Levant. Offendum (Syria via LA) is joined by oud virtuoso Ronnie Malley (Palestine via Chicago) and DJ/beatmaker Thanks Joey (Syria via Brooklyn), to uncover what life in the heart of Arab-America was like over a century ago, while informing much of what is happening today in terms of immigration, xenophobia, Syria, and the ever-evolving notion of an “American dream.”

This event is free but registration is required, please register on the UMS website here: https://ums.org/performance/omar-offendum-residency-work-in-progress-little-syria/

The purpose of this town hall will be to discuss the findings and recommendations from the consensus report, The Integration of the Humanities and Arts with Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in Higher Education: Branches from the Same Tree, released Spring 2018 by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM). The even will also facilitate discussions about strategies for the creation, evaluation, and sustainability of courses and programs that integrate across disciplines. The report represents a culmination of a two-year study conducted by a committee of National Academies members including scientists, engineers, health professionals, humanists, artists, and industry leaders. The report argues that integrating the humanities and arts with science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine results in positive learning outcomes that will help students successfully enter the workforce, enrich their lives, and help them become active and informed citizens. Importantly, a range of positive educational outcomes resulted from these methods, including improved written and oral communication skills, teamwork skills, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and the ability to apply knowledge in real-world settings.
