Leaders facilitate a weekly group that is scheduled around their availability, attend weekly leader training meetings from 6:00-7:15 PM ET on Mondays, attend community-building events, and help with marketing efforts on campus. The overall time commitment is ~3 hours/week, and it is super rewarding. All students interested are encouraged to apply regardless of whether or not they have attended a WSN group. Applications are open to both undergraduate students and graduate students who will be enrolled at U-M in the winter.

The application can be found at bit.ly/W22-Leader-Application or on our website at umichwsn.org/leader-application. If you have any questions regarding the application process or the position itself, please contact the Director of Leader Development, Courtney Jones (courtj@umich.edu).

SEMINAR: "Industrial & Systems Engineering at the University of Florida and Recent Automation and Situation Awareness Modeling Research" - David Kaber (November 4, 2021 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/86873 86873-21637055@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 4, 2021 3:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: U-M Industrial & Operations Engineering

The Departmental Seminar Series is open to all. U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering graduate students and faculty are especially encouraged to attend.

Title: Industrial & Systems Engineering at the University of Florida and Recent Automation and Situation Awareness Modeling Research

Abstract:
In this talk, I will provide information on the current state of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) at the University of Florida (UF), including faculty, research thrusts and laboratories, as well as funding and some current projects. The second part of the talk will focus on methods of modeling degrees of automation in human-in-the-loop systems as well as the impact on operator situation awareness (SA) responses. We contend that methods of some prior research do not represent engineering models, per se. Furthermore, discrete and ordinal characteristics of other models limit reliable prediction of operator performance with automation. This research defines an “automation rate” (AR) function involving classification of all system functions according to stages of information processing, calculation of the AR for each stage, setting weighting factors for these rates, and finally obtaining an overall AR for the system. The practicality and feasibility of this model are verified through a case study analysis. In addition, we formulate a new model of operator SA responses to AR, based on existing empirical research findings. Through the case analysis and mathematical proof, the rationality of the form of these new models is demonstrated. This work lays the foundation for subsequent optimization of automated system design for operator SA. This study provides an example of current human-systems engineering research through the UF ISE Department.

Bio:
David Kaber is currently the Dean’s Leadership Professor and Chair of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Florida (UF). Prior to joining UF, Kaber was a distinguished professor of industrial engineering at North Carolina State University where he also served as the Director of Research for the Ergonomics Center of North Carolina. Kaber’s primary area of research interest is human-systems engineering with a focus on human-automaton interaction, including design and analysis for situation awareness in complex human in-the-loop systems. Domains of study for his research have included physical work systems, industrial safety systems, robotic systems, transportation systems and healthcare. Kaber is a senior member of IEEE and junior-past Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Human-Machine Systems. He is a fellow of Institute of Industrial Engineers and the Human Factors & Ergonomics Society. Kaber is also a Certified Human Factors Professional (BCPE) and a Certified Safety Professional (BCSP).

Bio:
Currently living near Paris, France, and raised in Michigan, Christine has pursued an international career. Working between Europe and the US over the past 30 years, she has transitioned from being a managing director in large corporations to becoming a business entrepreneur. After receiving her engineering degree with honors from the University of Michigan IOE department in 1989 and a diploma from the Sorbonne University in France, Christine has specialized in a diverse number of fields: automotive, environment, renewable energies, real estate investment and preventative health. Geographically, she has worked in Europe, the US and Mexico.

At the beginning of her career, she held management positions with automotive companies such as Faurecia and over the last 18 years has specialized in environmental issues, directing large-scale projects at the Veolia headquarters (a French international public-utilities services firm). She developed a solid knowledge of environmental systems including water, energy and waste/recycling, as well as a focus on renewable energies later, when she ran a business unit for developing solar and wind energy projects in Europe, including building the largest solar rooftop project in the world at the time with General Motors.

In 2012, she co-founded a renewable-energy biomass company, called Energy Biomass Sourcing, which supplies recycled and non-usable wood to utility companies, producing energy in Europe. She is currently running the company, with revenues of over 12m$/yr.

Being an entrepreneur and owning several companies has enabled Christine to explore different types of businesses and their potential growth. She is also an elected public official in the Parisian region and performs many civic duties (such as giving talks in schools to help children become more aware of the environmental challenges of our times).

She is married, has two children, and regularly practices running, water sports, reading and meditation.

Title: A DDDAMS-based Surveillance and Crowd Control via UAVs and UGVs

Abstract:
In this talk, we first introduce a dynamic data driven adaptive multi-scale simulation (DDDAMS) based planning and control framework that we have developed for effective and efficient surveillance and crowd control via unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs). The framework is composed of integrated planner, integrated controller, and decision module for DDDAMS. The integrated planner, which is designed in an agent-based simulation (ABS) and Unity-based game engine, devises best control strategies for each function of 1) crowd detection, 2) crowd tracking, and 3) UAV/UGV motion planning. The integrated controller then controls real UAVs/UGVs for surveillance tasks via 1) sensory data collection and processing, 2) control command generation based on strategies provided by the decision planner, and 3) control command transmission via radio to the real system. The decision module for DDDAMS enhances computational efficiency of the framework via dynamic switching of fidelity of simulation and information gathering. Finally, we will share the results of our field demo, which successfully integrated a fast running simulator, a real-time simulator, and the real system (viz. UAVs, UGVs, and crowd).

Bio:
Dr. Young-Jun Son is a Professor and the Head of Systems and Industrial Engineering Department at The University of Arizona. He is a Department Editor of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) Transactions, and serve on the editorial board for six other international journals. New England Literature Program (NELP) Mass Meeting (November 16, 2021 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/89049 89049-21660331@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, November 16, 2021 7:00pm
Location: Angell Hall
Organized By: Department of English Language and Literature

After having to cancel NELP in 2020, it was so good to be back in the woods with our students last spring—and they were just thrilled to have the experience of living and learning (and climbing mountains!) together in such an intimate setting after a year of online classes. We're not yet sure what NELP 2022 will look like exactly, but we learned in 2021 how to do the program with modifications allowing us to accommodate a variety of circumstances, and so our planning for this spring is running at full steam—though we anticipate minimal changes to the program in 2022.

If you’d like to learn more about NELP, please join us for the Mass Meeting, where the previous year’s NELP participants come out to describe the program to those who might be interested in applying; they do a much better job than a flyer or the website can of painting a picture of what life at NELP is like, and it’s by far the most helpful way for prospective students to figure out whether the program is right for them. And if you can’t make it for the November Mass Meeting, we’ll have a smaller Informational Meeting in December.

Aric Knuth, Director, NELP

Have you ever wondered why it is that people who desperately want to adopt physically active lifestyles don’t stick with them once their initial burst of motivation fades? This provocative presentation will showcase the science for a new paradigm to better foster sustainable behavior change. Dr. Michelle Segar will explain why logic-based reasons for behavior change (e.g., better health, disease prevention, etc.) keep people stuck in cycles of starting and stopping but not behavioral sustainability. Using a science-based story, she will describe a novel approach to promoting physical activity and other self-care behaviors that can be used across contexts (organizational, health care, fitness, coaching, etc.). Attendees will leave this session with a more strategic way to think about and promote the sustainable behavior necessary for achieving improved health and well-being.

Title: Optimization Models to Increase Supplier Autonomy and Resource Utilization

Abstract:
Underutilized resources exist all around us. When at a stoplight, notice the empty seats and cargo spaces in the vehicles around you. Think about the monolithic distribution centers that are a mismatch for most businesses’ seasonal and fluctuating space and throughput requirements. To harness these and other underutilized resources, organizations need to think differently about how resources are acquired, managed, and allocated to fulfill requests. This talk will focus on one such solution: on-demand systems that match requests to independent, decentralized suppliers who are not employed nor controlled by the platform. In these situations, the platform cannot be certain a supplier will accept an offered request. To mitigate this selection uncertainty, a platform can offer each supplier a menu of requests to choose from. However, such menus need to be created carefully because of the trade-off between increasing selection probability and reduced systematic control. In addition to a complex decision space, supplier selection decisions are vast and have systematic implications, impacting the platform’s revenue, other suppliers’ experiences (in the form of duplicate selections) and the request waiting times. Thus, we present a multiple scenario approach, repeatedly sampling potential supplier selections, solving the corresponding two-stage decision problems, and combining the multiple different solutions through a consensus algorithm. Our specialized dynamic methods to create and push personalized recommendations to a set of freelance suppliers have broad applications to crowdsourced delivery, ride sharing, and volunteer management where providing choices can help interleaving of tasks with other activities and has the potential to increase resource utilization of decentralized assets. Extensive computational results using the Chicago Region as a case study illustrate that our method outperforms a set of benchmark policies, and is tractable for real-time deployment. We quantify the value of anticipating supplier selection, offering menus to suppliers, offering requests to multiple suppliers at once, and holistically generating menus with the entire system in mind. Our method leads to more balanced assignments by sacrificing some easy wins towards better system performance over time and for all stakeholders involved, including increased revenue for the platform, and decreased match waiting times for suppliers and requests.

SEMINAR: "Finding low-dimensional structure in messy data" – Laura Balzano (December 2, 2021 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/86875 86875-21637058@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, December 2, 2021 3:00pm

The Departmental Seminar Series is open to all. U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering graduate students and faculty are especially encouraged to attend.

Title: Finding low-dimensional structure in messy data

Abstract:
In order to draw inferences from large, high-dimensional datasets, we often seek simple structure that models the phenomena represented in those data. Low-rank linear structure is one of the most flexible and efficient such models, allowing efficient prediction, inference, and anomaly detection. However, classical techniques for learning low-rank models assume your data have only minor corruptions that are uniform over samples. Modern research in optimization has begun to develop new techniques to handle realistic messy data — where data are missing, have wide variations in quality, and/or are observed through nonlinear measurement systems.

In this talk I will give a high-level overview of recent research in this area. Then I will focus on the problem of learning linear subspace structure from multiple data sources of varying quality. This is common in problems like sensor networks or medical imaging, where different measurements of the same phenomenon are taken with different quality sensing (eg high or low radiation). In this context, learning the low-rank structure via PCA suffers from treating all data samples as if they are equally informative. I will discuss our theoretical results on weighted PCA. I will then present new algorithms for the non-convex probabilistic PCA formulation of this problem and a novel SDP relaxation.

Bio:
Laura Balzano is an associate professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and of Statistics by courtesy, at the University of Michigan. She is recipient of the NSF Career Award, ARO Young Investigator Award, AFOSR Young Investigator Award, and faculty fellowships from Intel and 3M. She received the Vulcans Education Excellence Award at the University of Michigan. Her main research focus is on modeling with big, messy data — highly incomplete or corrupted data, uncalibrated data, and heterogeneous data — and its applications in a wide range of scientific problems. Her expertise is in statistical signal processing, matrix factorization, and optimization. Laura received a BS from Rice University, MS from the UCLA, and PhD from the University of Wisconsin in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

About the Thriving Accelerator Workshops:
A Thriving Accelerator is an immersive workshop from the Center for Positive Organizations about a topic in the science of thriving. After completing a workshop, students will be able to immediately implement their learnings to create lasting personal and organizational impact.

In each of these actionable workshops, students will:
- Develop knowledge related to a particular research topic: Accelerators introduce the science for knowing.
- Develop skills to create actionable know-how: Accelerators apply the science for doing.
- Develop relational and embodied capacity to model and live the topic: Accelerators model the science for lived experience of being.

About the Generosity Accelerator:
How do you unleash generosity and get the resources you need in any team or organization? In this workshop, Wayne Baker will provide proven tools that will help you and your teams accelerate the flow of resources and build a culture of generosity.

Drawing on his book, All You Have To Do Is Ask, Baker will show you how to find what you need, and ask for it in ways that work. The workshop will give you access to real-time tools that support a culture of generosity, including a digital assessment, learning map, and access to a generosity community knowledge and resource sharing platform called Givitas. You will leave with a new appreciation of the power of how to ask for what you need in ways that transform what’s available for your success.

Instructor:
Wayne Baker, Faculty Co-Director, Center for Positive Organizations; Robert P. Thome Professor of Business; Professor of Management and Organizations; Professor of Sociology

On Monday, December 06, 2021 @ 6:00PM-7:00PM ET, come virtually listen to Jennifer Nehil (UM MS Chemistry; former R&D Technician and Chemist at BASF; current Brewing Material and Flavor Chemist at Molson Coors) discuss the brewing process, innovation and new product selection, and flavor chemistry, and Ralph Mertz (UM BS Mechanical Engineering; former Chrysler Engineer and Anheuser-Busch IT, Operations & Engineering Manager, and Financial Planning Leader; current Anheuser-Busch Global Vertical Operations Finance and Strategy Senior Director) discuss standard company performance metrics, corporate investments and collaborations, asset management, and a global strategy case study. The event will conclude with an open Q&A.

Anheuser-Busch InBev, or AB InBev, is a publicly-traded multinational drinks conglomerate headquartered in Belgium. It’s the world’s largest beer brewer by both volume and revenue, operating more than 600 beer brands in 150 countries. AB InBev was formed in 2008 through the acquisition of Budweiser brewer Anheuser-Busch by Belgian conglomerate InBev—which is itself a merger of Stella Artois-maker Interbrew and Brazil’s AmBev. In 2015, AB InBev acquired its biggest rival in North America, SABMiller, for $107 billion. The deal required the sale of a number of SABMiller brands, including Miller and Coors, to satisfy antitrust regulators. In recent years, acknowledging the consumer trend away from mass-produced lagers, AB InBev has rapidly acquired U.S. and international craft brewers including Goose Island, Blue Point, and Camden Town Brewery. Some of its popular brands include Budweiser, Michelo, Corona, Bush, and Natural Light. Learn more at https://www.anheuser-busch.com/about.html .

Molson Coors is a publicly-traded multinational drinks conglomerate with twin headquarters in Golden, Colorado, and Montreal, Canada, though officially considered a U.S. firm. In sales, it holds the number one position in Canada, the number two rank in the United Kingdom, and the number three slot in the U.S. Coors Light, the firm's biggest-seller, is the fourth best-selling beer in the United States; Molson Canadian is the best seller in English-speaking Canada; and Carling ranks as the best-selling lager in the United Kingdom. Other key brands include Blue Moon, Dos Equiz, and La Colombe. In 2005, it was formed through a merger of two companies with deep roots — Molson Inc., established in 1786, the oldest brewery in North America; and Adolph Coors, established in 1873 — both of which were still under control of their respective founding families. Following the merger, the Coors and Molson families jointly controlled Molson Coors, each holding one-third of the voting power. Learn more at https://www.molsoncoors.com/about .
