Positive Links:
The Positive Links Speaker Series, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations, offers inspiring and practical research-based strategies for building organizations that are high performing and bring out the best in its people. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

Positive Links sessions take place at Michigan Ross, and are free and open to the public.

About the talk:
What aspect of corporate culture is so deep that it affects our hearts, minds, and the organizational bottom line? In this session, O’Neill introduces the undiscovered domain she calls “emotional culture” and demonstrates how cultures comprised of positive emotions such as love, joviality, and awe have benefits not only for employees’ own individual well-being, but also for teams, clients, and the corporate bottom line. Building on her Harvard Business Review article, “Manage Your Emotional Culture,” O’Neill will highlight real-world case studies from across different industries and share practical tips for how managers, HR business partners, and individual change agents can diagnose, manage, and change their emotional cultures.

About O’Neill:
Olivia (Mandy) O'Neill, PhD, is a Visiting Scholar at the Haas School of Business, University of California (2018-2019). The University of Michigan and the City of Ann Arbor must work together in the pursuit of a clean energy future. This is where we start. Come join the conversation about the future of University of Michigan climate action!

This event is intended to yield specific and direct climate actions items that individuals, groups, and the whole community can take together. This event is taking the place of back-room event planning and allows the entire community to have a voice in dictating the future of climate action on campus and in the city!

The first half an hour of the consists of an expert panel consisting of 3 panelists talking about Ann Arbor Climate Policy, UM Climate Policy, and Environmental Justice. These speakers will talk about their opinions on the direction of climate action and climate policy on the UM campus and in the city of Ann Arbor.

Next, there will be a small group breakout session to allow for individual and small group brainstorming on the direction for AA/UM climate action.

Finally, there will be a whole group/community-wide brain storming session to map everyone's suggestions on the direction of future climate action. This should culminate in specific action items we would all like to get behind and take together as the next step in building the campus climate movement!

**Fall 2019 KICK-OFF WORKSHOP SEPTEMBER 23RD**

Sandwiches and Science: Training (for) Better Presentations marks the third run of the professional development event hosted by Tau Beta Pi aimed at providing Michigan Engineering graduate students the opportunity to enhance their scientific communication skills. The series will be co-hosted/sponsored by TBP and the graduate societies of MSE, ECE, ChE, and MACRO and also sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs! As "learning-by-practice" event, it aims to help students learn how to effectively convey the "big picture" value of their research to a diverse audience, while also engaging a dialog of science and engineering research among graduate students across the entire College of Engineering. The event is aimed primarily at graduate students planning to take their candidacy exam, but anyone is welcome to participate! We will host 7-10 events each term, and event dates/times will be announced on a rolling basis.

Each session is structured to have student speakers (2-3 per session) make a timed (15-20 min) presentation on their graduate research to a broad engineering audience and a communications expert panel (3-4 panelists). Our expert panelists will provide constructive feedback to the speakers (and the audience), highlighting the positive aspects of each presentation and also indicating opportunities for improvement. This structure will allow for the speakers to receive specific feedback on their communication skills, while also providing the audience with generalized guidelines for good scientific communication.

If you would like to participate as a speaker/audience, please fill out the links below. We will follow-up with you with scheduling details. NOTE: The event is open to ALL CoE students, regardless of TBP membership status.

Organized By: Information Assurance

Each new genetic test or medical app generates or collects more and more detailed health data, but may also raise serious issues for medicine, public health. Under what circumstances should a test be used, and how should it be implemented? Should people be allowed to choose or refuse a test, or should it be mandatory, as newborn screening is in some states? How should the data from these tests be used, and should individuals control access to the results of their tests? If test results are released to third parties, such as employers or insurers, what protections should be in place to protect individuals from unfair treatment based on test results, data collected, or genotype?

This Dissonance series event will take a multi-disciplinary look at these issues from a variety of theoretical and applied perspectives.

Panelists will include:
- Lori Andrews, Professor of Law and Director of the Institute for Science, Law and, Technology at Chicago Kent Law School

- Jodyn Platt, Assistant Professor, U-M Medical School

- Kayte Spector-Bagdady, Assistant Professor, U-M Medical School, Chief of the Research Ethics Service in the Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine (CBSSM)

Allies for Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit (February 27, 2019 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/61069 61069-15027198@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, February 27, 2019 9:00am
Location: Institute For Social Research
Organized By: Institute for Social Research

Allies for Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit is a traveling exhibit designed to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities through respect for others, comfort during interactions, and awareness of disability issues. Using a multi-media approach to demonstrate respect, comfort and awareness, the
exhibit offers suggestions for becoming disability allies and educators.

It has been twenty years since the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and almost forty years since the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Both of these laws protect against discrimination of people with disabilities by requiring equal access to employment, education, goods and services.

Americans have progressed in their attitudes and behaviors toward people with disabilities; however, there remain questions and concerns about appropriate communication, comfort level, and inclusive practices.

When it comes to interacting with individuals with disabilities, people ask:
"What should I do?", "How should I respond?", "Is it okay to say that?", "How can I become an ally?"; Allies for Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit will attempt to answer some of these questions.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to experience The Ability Exhibit when it visits the Institute for Social Research (426 Thompson St.)

HIGH STAKES CULTURE The Politics of Blackface Then and Now: What’s in Your Yearbook? (March 11, 2019 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/61528 61528-15126006@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 11, 2019 5:30pm

We are in a moment in which a ‘culture war’ – in large part about race -- has been ignited and is being stoked daily by activists across the political spectrum and by the President of the United States himself. This high stakes culture war is playing out across our cultural landscape in ways that we need to better understand and the practice of blackface as a political tool has become a particularly potent flash point.

Please join us for a conversation about ‘blackface – then and now.’ What is it? Why does it still matter? Why was it a thing in 1880 and 1980? Why is it all over the news now? And, how can we better understand the violent uses to which cultural appropriation more broadly gets put?

Peace Ethology:
A Paradigm Shift in Peace Research

Wednesday, March 13, 2019 | 4 PM
2435 North Quad
105 South State Street, Ann Arbor

Free and open to the public

The popular belief persists that, by nature, humans are not predisposed to peace. However, archeological and paleontological evidence reveals that the vast majority of our time as a species has been spent in small hunter-gatherer bands that are basically peaceful and egalitarian in nature. We welcome Darcia Narvaez and Peter Verbeek to talk about humans' developmental niche for peace and findings from and future directions for peace ethology, the interdisciplinary science of peace.

Darcia Narvaez is Professor of Psychology at the University of Notre Dame and integrates evolutionary, anthropological, neurobiological, clinical, developmental and education sciences in her work. She is author of the award-winning Neurobiology and the Development of Human Morality: Evolution, Culture, and Wisdom (W.W. Norton, 2014) and contributor to Peace Ethology: Behavioral Processes and Systems of Peace (Wiley, 2018).

Peter Verbeek is Associate Professor and Director of the Graduate Program in the Anthropology of Peace and Human Rights at the University of Alabama, Birmingham and studies behavioral processes and systems of peace at the levels of species, individuals, groups, communities, and cultures. His work has been published in Science, Behaviour, and other scientific journals, and he is co-editor with Benjamin Peters of Peace Ethology: Behavioral Processes and Systems of Peace (Wiley, 2018).

Co-sponsored by the LSA Department of Psychology and the LSA Department of Anthropology

The Program in International and Comparative Studies (PICS) will host the third annual International Studies Alumni Career Panel on March 18, 2019 in 1010 Weiser Hall (10th Floor). This alumni panel will showcase and celebrate the university’s rich history of contributions made by International Studies alumni, while providing valuable insight for current students as they start to develop their own career paths. The panel will include a student Q&A portion; a networking reception with light appetizers will follow.

PICS is home to the International Studies major and minor. Established in 2009, International Studies is one of the largest majors in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, with over 1,500 accomplished alumni worldwide. International Studies graduates pursue numerous career paths, many going on to work with corporations, non-profits, or government agencies, as well as progressing directly on to graduate school.

Learn where an International Studies major can take you!

This event is co-sponsored by: Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies, Department of Political Science, LSA Opportunity Hub, Residential College, and Sigma Iota Rho – Honor Society for International Studies.

BA International Studies – International Security, Norms and Cooperation ’13
Peter Calloway is a lawyer working with the San Francisco Public Defender’s office on a project targeting misconduct by prosecutors, the primary drivers of the American incarceration crisis. Through his project, he hopes to help re-sensitize the public and the actors in the criminal legal system to the harm and suffering the system produces daily. He is developing tools to enable public defender offices across the country to track and respond to the prosecutorial misconduct they routinely encounter. Peter graduated from the University of Michigan in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in International Studies – International Security, Norms, and Cooperation. From there, he attended the University of Michigan Law School, where he developed a pro bono project designed to help people incarcerated in Louisiana prisons access the legal research they needed to litigate their appeals. Upon graduating in 2016, he spent a year serving as a law clerk to a judge on the Superior Court of Washington, D.C. Peter wants to help end mass human caging, racism, sexism, capitalism, many of the other “isms”, poverty, inequality, and injustice, and he hopes to align with people who want the same things. HET Brown Bag | Pulsar Timing as a Probe of Primordial Black Holes and Subhalos (March 20, 2019 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/62229 62229-15335273@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 20, 2019 12:00pm

Pulsars act as accurate clocks, sensitive to gravitational redshift and acceleration induced by transiting clumps of matter. In this talk, I study the sensitivity of pulsar timing arrays (PTA) to transiting compact dark matter objects, focusing on primordial black holes and subhalos. Such dark matter clumps can result in different classes of signals observable in pulsar timing experiments depending on the mass of the object. I will classify the types of signals, where they are most important, and the different search strategies resulting in possible constraints over a huge mass range, 10^−12 to 100 solar masses. Crucially, PTAs offer the opportunity to probe much less dense objects than lensing experiments due to the large effective radius over which such objects can be observed with a single pulsar. We project the reach possible with current and future pulsar timing experiments, with sensitivity to a dark matter sub-component reaching the sub-percent level over significant parts of this range with future detectors.

Location: Angell Hall
Organized By: Germanic Languages & Literatures

We will have a mass meeting for all students, who will take language courses at a Goethe Institut this spring or summer.

We will have Goethe Institut alums from various sites present at this gathering.

I will speak for the first 15 minutes about the transfer of credits, which is important for all of you, and about MCompass, which is important for you and the university. I will also introduce a Google site to which you will have access and where you can fill in information and post photos for future students.

We will then break up into separate groups and separate rooms where Goethe Institut alums will talk about their experience and answer questions about course content, accommodation, early arrival, free time, other participants, transportation, travel, homework, class hours, costs, etc.

Above all, this meeting also gives you the opportunity to meet fellow participants in person. As you will have noticed, I already established a separate MBox site (Goethe Students 2019) for all Goethe students with the names of participants and with the regulations how the credits get transferred. Get in contact with fellow students: some of you may have already gotten to know each other via email or GroupMe. It would be ideal if you were to fly out to the Goethe Institut with fellow students--you may want to share your flight information with them.

Please bring a list of your own specific questions for the alums to this meeting.

Open-Book Translation Contest (March 28, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/62241 62241-15335294@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 28, 2019 4:00pm
Location: Modern Languages Building
Organized By: Germanic Languages & Literatures

Students are invited to put their translation skills to the test by participating in the Seventh Annual University of Michigan German Department Open-Book Translation Contest! This contest will be judged by a panel of faculty members. The entries will be identified only by the student’s university ID number, making the judging anonymous. There will be monetary prizes of $150 for first place, $125 for second place, and $100 for third place!

Participants: All undergraduate University of Michigan students currently enrolled in a German course or who are registered as a German major or minor are welcome to participate.

Registration: All contest participants are required to register for the contest by 5 p.m. on Monday, March 25! To register contact Andrew Mills: ajmills@umich.edu.

Alternative times: If students can demonstrate that they cannot make the contest time due to their class schedule or work schedule constraints, an alternative time and location can be arranged. This alternative time must be arranged and confirmed before 5 p.m. on Monday, March 25, and must take place at some point during the day of Thursday, March 28.

Contest Rules: The contest will be held under the same conditions used by the American Translators Association (ATA) for its certification exam. Students will have approximately 70 minutes to translate a text by hand that will be provided for them. The translation will be from German to English. The contest will be held in “open book” format. Students will not have access to the internet, but may bring and use as many hardback or paperback dictionaries as they wish. All students receive the same text, which will be approximately 225-275 words in length. The contest must be written in (dark) pencil capable of being photo-copied for our judges. Students must bring their own pencils. Paper will be provided.

The text to be translated will be “general” in nature. This text expresses a view, sets forth an argument, or presents an idea or situation. Examples include: a newspaper article, an essay, or a passage from a non-fiction book. The contest passage is chosen in such a way as to avoid highly specialized terminology requiring research. There are, however, terminology challenges in the text, and knowledge of German culture, society, and history often is necessary for contestants to excel.

Challenge yourself! The worst that could happen is you discover how things stand with your translation skills. The best thing that could happen: you win some money!

Location: Angell Hall
Organized By: Department of English Language and Literature

In this talk, Stephane Robolin (Rutgers) will explore the role of libraries as institutions central to the circulation of banned literature in apartheid South Africa, as part of a larger inquiry into the clandestine lives of public organizations. The primary focus will be the U.S. Information Service Library in Johannesburg, one of a global network of libraries funded by the United States to wage the Cold War through film, literature, and journalism. This talk will consider how a library designed to disseminate propaganda by the U.S. government in a white minority-governed country could simultaneously serve and transgress the missions of both states. What was the function of African American literature in its stacks? What role could, say, The Autobiography of Malcolm X play in downtown Johannesburg? And what does it tell us about how the careful curation of culture works (and doesn’t) in contexts of political resistance? And what, if anything, does it reveal about the nature of cultural institutions?

Epsilon Eta is Umich's only Pre-Profesional Environmental Co-Ed Fraternity. We seek to develop a more robust network of students, researchers, employers, and agencies to more effectively deal with the realities of our world’s changing climate and loss of biodiversity. By fostering a conscious awareness of the intrinsic relationship between people and their environment through academics, the community, and service, we seek to bridge the gap from the undergraduate atmosphere to professional environmental fields for students at Michigan.
Although we are inclusive of all majors, we require an interest in the environmental field. By pledging Epsilon Eta, you will become a member of an eclectic group of driven, intelligent, and innovative peers, as well as gain access to professional, social, and volunteering resources.
This meeting will give you a chance to get a better sense of our organization and a chance to ask questions. We will also explain what our Fall Rush process consists of.

UM RC Deutsches Theater presents Blaubart - Hoffnung der Frauen (April 6, 2019 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/62646 62646-15416709@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, April 6, 2019 8:00pm
Location: East Quadrangle
Organized By: Residential College

In this sometimes dark, sometimes hilarious play by contemporary German playwright Dea Loher, you’ll meet Heinrich Blaubart (Blaubart means Blue Beard), who bears some resemblance to Blue Beard from the French fairy tale by the same name, who kills his wives when they disobey him and enter the forbidden chamber of his castle. Like the original Blue Beard, Heinrich Blaubart brings death to women he meets. Unlike the original Blue Beard, though, he doesn’t seek to do so; in fact, his fear of relationships makes him try to avoid women. This, of course, makes him all the more attractive to the women he encounters. On a deeper level, the play suggests that everyone is searching for something different and for some acceptance. Perhaps one should take heed, though, of Maeterlinck’s warning that: “There is a Blue Beard room in everyone’s soul that should never be opened.”

Presented in German by students enrolled in RCHums334: From the Page to the Stage. Surtitles will make it possible for even non-German speakers to follow the action on stage. Directed by Janet Hegman Shier.

Saturday, April 6 at 8 PM and Sunday matinée, April 7 at 2 PM in the Keene Theater (lower level of East Quad).

We recommend a donation of $5 or non-perishable food items though no one will be turned away at the door. Proceeds go to SAFE HOUSE and Food Gatherers.

About RC Deutsches Theater: Since 1985, the focus of this RC course offering is on acting and on reading plays by contemporary German-speaking authors. We supertitle our plays. Audiences will note the resemblance to the way theater is performed in much of Europe with minimal (or sometimes no) set.

Scattering amplitudes in planar N=4 super Yang-Mills can be described in terms a geometrical object, the Amplituhedron. Special properties of loop integrands seem to indicate that this picture persists beyond the planar limit. My talk will describe a first step, and several challenges, in finding similar structures in gravity amplitudes.
I will explain how their ultraviolet behaviour, usually considered problematic, might hold the key to this problem.
