(VIRTUAL): CEW+Inspire Midweek Mindfulness-Guided Sits (July 15, 2020 12:15pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/64874 64874-18992305@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, July 15, 2020 12:15pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: CEW+

As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.

Being present in the moment is a skill that can be learned when practiced on a regular basis and is especially important during these trying times. Psychological stress can damper your overall health, affecting your ability to remain resilient in the face of challenges. Evidence-based meditation has been shown to also reduce implicit age and race bias, reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and pain, improve cognitive functioning, and assist in ending ruminating thought patterns.

Free and open to all levels of practice.

After registering, please check your email confirmation for the Zoom link!

Location:
Organized By: Futures in Research, Science, Teaching - FIRST

BioTalk seminars provide speakers with experience presenting their research to a broader audience, including researchers and students from other departments. Each seminar is a 20 minute talk followed by 10 minutes of Q&A. Speakers will share a general statement of their research project and a background paper before their talk and will receive feedback on their presentation though an online form.

Please contact biotalk.contact@umich.edu if you would like to give a talk.

The BioTalk workshop is available to undergraduates interested in learning more about bioscience research at the graduate level. Students who participate in four workshops will receive a certificate of completion. These workshops include submitting questions prior to the talk, providing feedback to the presenter through an online form, and writing a short reflection on the content of the talk, including a researched description of one of the experimental techniques used by the speaker in their research project (or their shared publication).

Please see web link section for BioTalk schedule and workshop sign-up.

Location: Off Campus Location

Location: Off Campus Location

Students will learn how to abandon a debilitating fixed mindset in favor of a growth mindset, leading to success in areas they once considered too difficult. The workshop will also introduce students to the research of Dr. Angela Duckworth, and how a growth mindset can lead to the development of grit, an essential characteristic to overcoming our fear of failure.

The study and learning strategies students often bring to college are often insufficient to help them succeed at the university level. Particularly in challenging STEM courses, students can't simply memorize or cram their way to a good grade. This workshop will focus on the popular learning strategies to avoid, as well as the top three strategies you don't know but are shown by research to be the most effective for long-term learning.

Just as being a graduate student is very different from being an undergraduate so are the ways in which you figure out which programs are the best fit for you, and successfully apply for them. This session will be especially relevant to juniors and seniors in the process of researching and applying to graduate school: How to find the right programs, how to structure your personal statement and get strong recommendation letters, do you have to take the GRE – and what if you don’t score as well as you’d like? However, we’ll also talk about what you should be doing to prepare as early as your sophomore or even freshman year. We’ll have both a short presentation and a panel of graduate students, including those who have recently served on admissions committees.
