Asian American History: Past and Present with Dr. Manan Desai (August 3, 2021 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/84778 84778-21624935@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, August 3, 2021 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Engineering Diversity and Outreach (CEDO)

This lecture and discussion examines key moments in American history that illustrate the ways Asian Americans have been racialized in the U.S, how they have been subject to legal and extralegal exclusion and discrimination, as well as the ways communities have organized in resistance. Using key case studies spanning the late 19th century to the present moment, we will consider: What lessons from the past can we use to understand our present? What role can Asian Americans continue to play in the ongoing struggle against white supremacy and social inequalities?

This lecture is sponsored by the Center for Engineering Diversity & Outreach (CEDO), the APID/A Staff Association and Graduate Rackham International (GRIN).

This lecture is part one of a three part series on combating anti-Asian hate, harassment and racism throughout the 2021/2022 academic year.

Abstract (by Mohsen Taheri)

Complex applications in modern technology urgently call for advanced structural materials that are high-strength and lightweight, and yet tolerant to damage from extreme temperature, particle radiation, or environmental exposure. To swiftly fulfill these emerging demanding material requirements, we must develop a multi-scale understanding of the relationship between processing, microstructure, and properties of metallic materials. Toward these goals, I present two examples of my recent findings on (i) how functional behavior of shape memory alloys made by additive manufacturing correlates with the manufacturing history and (ii) how the macroscopic strength of magnesium alloys is governed by local microstructure (grain boundary parameters). I will conclude my talk by discussing how such understandings can be captured in multi-scale modeling tools to predict the deformation of the material and accelerate the development of next-generation structural materials.

Prospective students are encouraged to attend and learn more about Michigan ECE! This event will include remarks from Professor Pei-Cheng Ku and a few current ECE students, along with some virtual tours of labs and research projects taking place across the department.
Why come?

Because information is power. ECE is challenging, and therefore will put you in the driver’s seat when it comes to your career. It brings job security, flexibility, many career options, and great pay.
But what do electrical and computer engineers do anyway?

We do everything! We are there in all electronic devices (cell phones, computers, cars, appliances, etc). We are in electronic communication, networking, power, energy, sensors, and much more. We make things smart – we make them move. We send and decode information – we connect people and things. And we light up the world – efficiently of course!

Basically – we make (almost) everything that matters. And we are master innovators! We hope you can come and learn more!

The Feeling of Being Watched: A Film Screening Feat. Director, Assia Boundaoui (October 14, 2021 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/87990 87990-21648233@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 14, 2021 5:00pm
Location: Haven Hall
Organized By: Arab and Muslim American Studies (AMAS)

Join Arab and Muslim American Studies as we welcome Assia Boundaoui for a screening of her film, The Feeling of Being Watched on October 14th, 2021 @ 5:00pm in 3512 Haven Hall.

In the Arab-American neighborhood outside of Chicago where director Assia Boundaoui grew up, most of her neighbors think they have been under surveillance for over a decade. While investigating their experiences, Assia uncovers tens of thousands of pages of FBI documents that prove her hometown was the subject of one of the largest counterterrorism investigations ever conducted in the U.S. before 9/11, code-named “Operation Vulgar Betrayal.” With unprecedented access, The Feeling of Being Watched weaves the personal and the political as it follows the filmmaker’s examination of why her community fell under blanket government surveillance. Assia struggles to disrupt the government secrecy shrouding what happened and takes the FBI to federal court to compel them to make the records they collected about her community public. In the process, she confronts long-hidden truths about the FBI’s relationship to her community. The Feeling of Being Watched follows Assia as she pieces together this secret FBI operation, while grappling with the effects of a lifetime of surveillance on herself and her family.

Fall Retreats

Friday, November 5, 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM ET

Held in-person at the Ross School of Business

Applications due Oct. 17, 2021

Story Lab develops executive-level presence and communication skills through storytelling workshops and events. To be an effective leader — at work, in the community, or in your personal life — you must be able to communicate with impact. Often this means telling stories that are meaningful to you and others, and doing so in the rich language and expressive style of a seasoned storyteller. If you can craft and deliver an effective story, you will be better able to convey your value to recruiters, inspire and motivate classmates and colleagues, and influence your audience. At Story Lab, you’ll find an immersive experience and an opportunity to hone your skills in a safe and supportive environment.

This half-day retreat will be led by expert storytellers who will lead you through exercises to build your confidence and realize your unique communication style while celebrating extraordinary displays of leadership on stages large and small. A meal will be provided.

Who should participate in the retreat:
Students with a strong interest in building storytelling abilities and leadership development. Any level student at any school is welcome.

How to participate in the retreat:
Fill out the application form (linked at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdn0VTMOQlPesnKVVkGHZhUVTIetagLNRl4ye9LcqKhp0mt2Q/viewform) by October 17. We have a limited number of spots available.

This event is powered by the Sanger Leadership Center, Ross Design + Business, and is in partnership with Student Life and M-LEAD.

Dr. Scott Hanson is the 2020 ECE Rising Star Alumni Award Recipient.

Abstract:

Ambiq spun out of the University of Michigan in 2010 with one goal: to put intelligence everywhere. A decade later, Ambiq has added intelligence to more than 100 million wearables, hearables, smart cards, industrial sensors, and medical devices. In this talk, I’ll give some insight on the journey of building Ambiq from University-backed research project to 150+ person company building chips for the world’s biggest brands. I’ll walk through some of our latest low power circuit innovations and where we’re going next. I’ll also talk about what new innovations we need from you at the University of Michigan to enable 100 BILLION smart things.

Bio:

Scott Hanson is the Chief Technology Officer and founder of Ambiq. Scott invented SPOT, Ambiq’s core sub-threshold technology platform, to enable the world’s most energy-efficient chips during his PhD studies at the University of Michigan. He founded Ambiq in 2010 and led the development of the world record-setting Apollo, Ambiq’s first flagship processor. Under Scott’s leadership, Ambiq has shipped more than 100 million chips to the world’s top brands and has grown into the global leader in ultra-low power solutions.

In addition to his role as CTO, he has variously played roles leading product definition and development, managing production test, and, most importantly, spending a great deal of time with customers to understand their needs and their vision. As a widely recognized innovator in low power circuits, Scott today leads the development of Ambiq’s technology roadmap.

Scott’s pioneering work in sub-threshold design and picowatt processors has been widely published, with more than 30 leading publications, more than 20 patents on related technology, and a wide variety of speaking engagements. Scott’s work was honored by the University of Michigan with the 2014 Arbor Networks PhD Research Impact Award and the 2020 ECE Alumni Rising Star Award and was honored by Ernst & Young as an Entrepreneur of the Year 2020 finalist.

Title: Towards robust, interpretable, and fair social and public health interventions

Abstract: In the last decades, significant advances have been made in AI, ML, and optimization. Recently, systems relying on these technologies are being transitioned to the field with the potential of having tremendous influences on people and society. With increase in the scale and diversity of deployment of algorithm-driven decisions in the open world come several challenges including the need for robustness, interpretability, and fairness which are confounded by issues of data scarcity and bias, tractability, ethical considerations, and problems of shared responsibility between humans and algorithms. In this talk, we focus on the problems of homelessness and public health in low resource and vulnerable communities and present research advances in AI, ML, and optimization to address one key cross-cutting question: how to allocate scarce intervention resources in these domains while accounting for the challenges of open world deployment? We will show concrete improvements over the state of the art in these domains based on real world data. We are convinced that, by pushing this line of research, AI, ML, and optimization can play a crucial role to help fight injustice and solve complex problems facing our society.

The advancement of science requires decommissioning old experiments and pursuing new experiments. But which new experiments? How should we decide? Professor Wells will show answering these questions necessarily goes well beyond scientific considerations and lays bare philosophical, economic, and political viewpoints. This peer-led teach-in will engage analytical frameworks for examining systemic cultural, social, economic, and political forces in the community along with individual reflection. WSN Leader Application (November 11, 2021 12:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/89125 89125-21660540@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 11, 2021 12:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Wolverine Support Network

Wolverine Support Network is currently accepting applications to become a peer support group leader for the Winter 2022 semester! Leading a WSN group is a great way to hone skills in communication, group management, and accountability while creating a space on campus for honest conversations about mental health.

Leaders facilitate a weekly group that is scheduled around their availability, attend weekly leader training meetings from 6:00-7:15 PM ET on Mondays, attend community-building events, and help with marketing efforts on campus. The overall time commitment is ~3 hours/week, and it is super rewarding. All students interested are encouraged to apply regardless of whether or not they have attended a WSN group. Applications are open to both undergraduate students and graduate students who will be enrolled at U-M in the winter.

The application can be found at bit.ly/W22-Leader-Application or on our website at umichwsn.org/leader-application. If you have any questions regarding the application process or the position itself, please contact the Director of Leader Development, Courtney Jones (courtj@umich.edu).
