Continuing Korematsu: Our Fight in the Trump Era (January 30, 2020 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/72117 72117-17939981@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 30, 2020 6:00pm
Location: Hutchins Hall
Organized By: Asian Pacific American Law Students Association

January 30th is the Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution. On February 19th, 1942, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, one of the most blatant forms of racial profiling in US history, which led to the forced removal and incarceration of over 120,000 American citizens and residents on the basis of being ethnically Japanese. Fred T. Korematsu was one of many who refused to be incarcerated, and was arrested. A national civil rights hero, Fred Korematsu appealed his case to the Supreme Court. Although the Supreme Court ruled against him in 1944, in 1983 his conviction was overturned in a coram nobis proceeding where Fred Korematsu addressed the court, saying, “I would like to see the government admit they were wrong, and do something about it so this will never happen again to any American citizen of any race, creed, or color.”

In 2014 and again in 2019, the US government attempted to reopen the Fort Sill camp to incarcerate migrant children from Latin America; Fort Sill was previously used as a concentration camp where Native Americans and Japanese Americans were detained. In June 2017, ICE agents raided and arrested Iraqi families in the Detroit area, leading to the ACLU’s lawsuit, Hamama v. Adducci. Raids on Iraqi families have continued into 2019.

On January 30th, APALSA's Political Action Committee, in partnership with the Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission and Stop Repeating History would like to invite you to attend a screening of the documentary Alternative Facts: The Lies of Executive Order 9066 by Jon Osaki, followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A led by University of Michigan Law student Kevin Luong.

This event features incredible guest speakers: Dr. Karen Korematsu, Don Tamaki, Aamina Ahmed, Mary Kamidoi, and Michael Steinberg. Free and open to the public. Food from Curry On will be provided with RSVP: bit.ly/2tfDsnu

Sarah Goddard Power Award and Rhetaugh G. Dumas Progress in Diversifying Award Ceremony (February 12, 2020 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/71014 71014-17768629@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, February 12, 2020 4:00pm
Location: Michigan League
Organized By: CEW+

February 12, 2020 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Koessler Room, Michigan League

Please join us for the annual Sarah Goddard Power & Rhetaugh G. Dumas Progress in Diversifying Awards Ceremony.

The Sarah Goddard Power & Rhetaugh G. Dumas Progress in Diversifying Awards are presented by the Academic Women’s Caucus, which was founded in its current form in 1975. Its initial charge was ” …to develop an inclusive organization of all women faculty members of the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint campuses of the University of Michigan which will serve as a forum for the exchange of information about the status of faculty women at the University and as a focus for action necessary to the investigation and resolution of their special concerns.” To this end, the Caucus has met regularly during the academic year since 1976. It has responded to the concerns of its members by sponsoring informational and problem-solving sessions of various kinds and has provided support and a mechanism for exchange of ideas and action proposals.

2020 SARAH GODDARD POWER AWARD
Sarah Goddard Power was widely acclaimed as a major contributor to the advancement of higher education, an advocate for affirmative action and human rights, and a champion of freedom for the international press. As a Regent of the University of Michigan for more than 12 years, Sarah Goddard Power worked tirelessly to advance the position of women and minorities in faculty and administrative roles.

Regent Sarah Goddard Power originally suggested that the Academic Women’s Caucus present awards to such individuals. In 1984, an Awards Committee was established to select the first recipients of the Academic Women’s Caucus Awards. Thus, it seemed appropriate that the Academic Women’s Caucus Award be renamed to honor Regent Power. In 1988, Regent Philip H. Power graciously consented to allow the Caucus to rename its awards the Academic Women’s Caucus Sarah Goddard Power Award. In 1998, President Lee Bollinger enabled the Award to be offered with an accompanying stipend. Each year, nominations are selected for the Sarah Goddard Power Awards.

2020 Sarah Goddard Power Award Recipients:

Cathleen Connell, Professor, Department of Health Behavior and Health Education, is being honored for her significant achievement in addressing current challenges faced by women through distinguished leadership at the University of Michigan. Dr. Connell began her academic career as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education in the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan in 1989, and rose through the ranks to become Professor in 2003. She has served in many leadership roles in her tenure at the University, including associate and senior associate dean of academic affairs, department and associate chair, and directorships. “Cathleen brings true kindness, empathy and graciousness to her leadership roles. With her attitudes and actions, she has helped make the Department and School a place where female scholars feel comfortable and can thrive personally and professionally,” said Mary Janevic, Ph.D., MPH, in a nominating letter. “Cathleen embodies the characteristics of an inspired leader. A patient listener, she has an innate ability to motivate teams to institute changes, meet goals, and achieve success,” Angela Beck, Assistant Dean for Student Engagement and Practice, School of Public Health, wrote.

Allison Steiner, Professor, Department of Climate and Space Science and Engineering, has provided breakthrough contributions towards developing a diverse and inclusive workforce both at the University of Michigan and in her own scientific field at a national and international level. She receives the Sarah Goddard Power Award for her tireless advocacy towards the advancement of women in Earth Sciences worldwide, and her leadership role in promoting equality for female faculty in the College of Engineering. Allison co-founded the Earth Science Women’s Network (ESWN), an international peer-mentoring network of women in the Earth Sciences, whose mission is to promote career development, build community, provide opportunities for informal mentoring and support, and facilitate professional collaborations. At the University and within the College of Engineering Steiner plays active leadership roles in a variety of programs and efforts to develop and implement strategies and plans to support diversity, equity and inclusion. She chaired the Dean’s Advisory Committee on Female Faculty, is a member of the CoE ADVANCE Advisory Committee and Co-Chaired last year’s NextProf Committee. “Looking through the list of the last few years Sarah Goddard Power Award winners is inspirational… Prof. Allison Steiner’s significant achievements in contributing to the betterment of current challenges faced by women through her leadership and community building roles clearly place her in the same company,” wrote Mark Moldwin, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and Professor of Space Sciences and Engineering, in a nominating letter.

2020 RHETAUGH G. DUMAS PROGRESS IN DIVERSIFYING AWARD
The Rhetaugh G. Dumas Progress in Diversifying Award supports a long-standing vision of increasing the number of diverse women in the academy. Named after late Vice Provost Rhetaugh Dumas, it recognizes outstanding institutional initiative in demonstrating notable progress by academic units in achieving ethnic, racial and gender diversity among those pursuing and achieving tenure as professors, clinical professors, research professors, and research scientists.

Rhetaugh Dumas was an esteemed leader with vision, insight, and wise counsel who had a major impact in the advancement of nursing, healthcare, and academic programs at U-M. Vice Provost Dumas was only the second African-American to hold the position of a Dean at the University of Michigan when she was appointed in 1981, and the first African-American to be named a Dean. She was reappointed Dean of Nursing in 1986 and 1991 to second and third terms. Prior to that appointment, she was the first woman and first nurse to serve as a deputy director of the National Institute of Mental Health. Dumas was Deputy Director, Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration (1979-1981) and before that Chief, Psychiatric Nursing Education Branch of the Division of Manpower and Training Programs (1972-1976). She was also a founding member, a Charter Fellow, and a former president of the American Academy of Nursing. Dumas served the University of Michigan for over 20 years with vision and a commitment to excellence.

2020 Rhetaugh G. Dumas Progress in Diversifying Award Recipient:
The U-M Women’s Studies Department has been selected for the Rhetaugh Dumas Award for its continued commitment to hiring and promoting a diverse faculty. In the fall of 2019, 50% of Women’s Studies faculty were black and/or people of color. Over the past five years, leadership in Women’s Studies has embodied and practiced an “institutional commitment to change.” Two recent department chairs - Elizabeth Cole and Rosie Ceballo, African American and Latinx, respectively – during those five years have moved on to Assistant, Associate, and interim dean positions at the College of LSA. Beyond their own leadership positions, they also made the effort to hire black women and/or women of color.

While globalization is understood as a contemporary moment marked by an unprecedented volume of travel – goods, capital, labor, images, ideas, knowledge – what is perhaps unprecedented is not so much the travel itself, but that “world travelers” were historically white and male. With an increase in postcolonial migrations – whether forced, voluntary, or in between – of individuals and communities from the Global South to the Global North, has colonialism’s unidirectional plunder under the guise of a “civilizing mission” now given way to immigrants of color being framed as invaders, pollutants, and burdens on the state in order to maintain discursive hierarchies of race, social class, and nation? In this post/colonial era, what, then, is the relationship between immigrant vulnerability and gender violence?

In the United States, a plethora of individuals and institutions have advocated for the rights of vulnerable immigrants, resulting in Acts such as VAWA and related remedial measures for low income victims of gender-based violence (including domestic violence and sexual assault.) What are some of the strengths and challenges of these legal mechanisms? With many citizen female victims of violence already ending up as defendants in the criminal justice system, where does it leave vulnerable immigrant women, especially in cases where the perpetrators are not “their” men but members of an elite white citizenry? What about the immigrant men of color, who are already framed as violent in the nation’s political imagination? And transgender and queer immigrants - even more marginalized, seldom talked about? In other words, can the gender, race, social class, and immigration status of victims and perpetrators of gender-based violence have an impact on legal outcomes? As the nation debates its immigration policies, what services can local and national organizations for survivors of gender violence offer, in more practical terms, to immigrants and vulnerable others?

The 3 panelists of this small 2-hour symposium will address the above interdisciplinary themes in their presentations. The discussion will be followed by audience Q+&A and an Indian dinner. The event will be free and open to the public.

Location: Tisch Hall
Organized By: Department of History

Please join us for a lunchtime discussion of the pre-circulated paper:

“Suing for an Enslaved Woman’s Child in the Nineteenth-Century Río de la Plata”

This article traces the history of Petrona, an enslaved woman sold in Santa Fe (Argentina), sent to Buenos Aires and later possibly to Montevideo (Uruguay). Her case demonstrates how the legal status of enslaved persons was affected by the redefinitions of jurisdictions and by the forced or voluntary crossings between political units. It sheds light on the circulation and uses of the Free Womb law (1813) in Argentina and Uruguay and traces legal experts’ debates over its meaning. And it reveals the knowledge enslaved people had of those abolitionist norms and how they used them to resist forced relocations, attempt favorable migrations, or achieve full freedom. The article reflects on the impact of independence on enslaved persons’ lives, the gendered bias of the abolitionist process, and the
central yet untold uses of antislavery rhetoric in the national narratives.

The article will be circulated in advance of the event; please contact Elizabeth Collins (elizabac@umich.edu) to obtain a copy.

Magdalena Candioti is Associate Researcher of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICET) at the Instituto de Historia Argentina y Americana “Dr Emilio Ravignani” and Associate Professor in the Department of Humanities and Sciences, Universidad Nacional del Litoral, Argentina. Candioti’s doctoral research focused on the political history of justice in the nineteenth-century Río de la Plata, resulting in the book Un maldito derecho: leyes, jueces y derecho en la Buenos Aires republicana, 1810–1830 (Buenos Aires, Didot). She is currently working on a book on gradual abolition in the Río de la Plata (1810-1860) called El tiempo de los libertos. Esclavitud y abolición en el Río de la Plata. Candioti was a visiting fellow in ILAS-Columbia University, NYC (2010-2011), and Postdoctoral Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History (MPIeR), Frankfurt, Germany (2014). In 2014, she was awarded a scholarship by the Slicher van Bath DeJong Foundation, CEDLA (Holland) to conduct comparative research on slavery in Santa Fe and Buenos Aires. Currently, she is a Fulbright fellow at the Afro-Latin American Research Institute at Harvard University.

Ángela Pérez-Villa is an Assistant Professor of History and Gender and Women’s Studies at Western Michigan University. Her research and teaching focus on the social, legal, and gender history of Latin America, particularly Colombia. Currently, she is working on a book manuscript that examines how during Colombia’s war of independence, political power and legal practice were disputed and reconfigured locally on the terrains of family, sexuality, and gender.

Sponsored by the U-M Department of History, the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and the Law in Slavery and Freedom Project.

POSTPONED: Of Victims and Villains: The Targeting of Muslim Women | Vivian R. Shaw Lecture (March 19, 2020 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/70530 70530-17602870@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 19, 2020 5:00pm
Location: Palmer Commons
Organized By: Women's and Gender Studies Department

The 2020 Shaw Lecture has been postponed until further notice. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Exploring her identity as an immigrant Muslim woman on the front lines of civil rights and liberties in Michigan, Rana Elmir will examine the well-organized Islamophobia industry and the relentless attacks on Muslim women who face unique challenges borne of both a presumption of guilt, as well as the additional presumption of victimhood. Muslim women’s status as both villains and victims not only drives discrimination, harassment and hate crimes, but promotes cynical policy proposals designed to “save” Muslim women that are actually rooted in anti-Muslim bias.

Rana Elmir is the deputy director of the ACLU of Michigan and has devoted her career to storytelling, action and activism. As part of the senior management team, she works in conjunction with the ACLU’s legal, legislative and development departments to increase understanding and appreciation of the Bill of Rights. Rana lectures often on anti-Muslim bias, the importance of storytelling, free speech and the intersection of race, faith, and gender. The Washington Post has published two op-eds written by Rana: “Stop asking me to condemn terrorists just because I’m Muslim” and “How Muslim women bear the brunt of Islamophobia.” Prior to her role as deputy director, Rana held the position of communications director for the ACLU of Michigan. Rana is a graduate of Wayne State University’s Journalism School and the Journalism Institute for Minorities.

The Vivian R. Shaw Lecture is presented biennially by the Women's Studies Department and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Established in 1997 by Ellen S. Agress (UM 1968), to honor the memory of her mother, this lecture addresses "real-world issues" related to women and gender.

This study group will read one memoir/month written by women. Several will focus on aging and old age, some on grief and loss, some on childhood or the middle years. Each month there will be group discussion of the selected memoir followed by a short reflective writing experience related to the issues raised by the memoir. This is not a memoir-writing class.
It’s an opportunity to use other women’s reflections on their lives to examine our own. Beth Spencer, instructor, a mostly-retired geriatric social worker, developed and facilitated Women & Aging through Literature & Reflective Writing for several years. This Study Group for those 50 and over meets Wednesdays, 10:00 am–12:00 pm on March 25, April 22, May 20, and June 24

Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Center for Japanese Studies

Unfortunately and due to unforeseen circumstances, this Noon Lecture has been cancelled. We hope to reschedule this event for the 2020-21 academic year.

My paper begins by reflecting upon work by Li Kotomi (1989-), a Taiwanese author writing in Japanese about love between women and referencing both Japanese lesbian fiction and the iconic Taiwanese lesbian writer Qiu Miaojin (1969-1995). From Japanese and Taiwanese queer fiction, I then pivot to queer Asian American writing such as that by Vietnamese American writer Ocean Vuong (1988-), who uses Qiu’s lines to open his book On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous (2019). Through these texts, I address how “queer” figures into discourses of ekkyō bungaku (border-crossing literature), tongzhi literary tradition, and Asian American writing.

Grace En-Yi Ting specializes in queer feminist approaches to Japanese literary and cultural studies. She is working on a book manuscript titled *Minor Intimacies: Queerness, the Normative, and the Everyday in Contemporary Japan*. From 2018-2020, she is a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Postdoctoral Fellow at Waseda University.

If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

This event is free and open to the public. A Q&A and book signing will follow the reading.

About the book:

In Believe Me, contributors ask and answer the crucial question: What would happen if we didn’t just believe women, but acted as though they matter? If we take women’s experiences of online harassment seriously, it will transform the internet. If we listen to and center survivors, we could revolutionize our systems of justice. If we believe Black women when they talk about pain, we will save countless lives. With contributions from many of the most important voices in feminism today, Believe Me is an essential roadmap for the #MeToo era and beyond.

Jaclyn Friedman is a writer, educator and activist, and creator of four books Yes Means Yes: Visions of Female Sexual Power and a World Without Rape (one of Publishers’ Weekly’s Top 100 Books of 2009), What You Really Want: The Smart Girl’s Shame-Free Guide to Sex & Safety, Unscrewed: Women, Sex, Power and How to Stop Letting the System Screw Us All, and her latest, Believe Me: How Trusting Women Can Change the World. Her podcast, also called, Unscrewed, is paving new paths to sexual liberation, and was named one of the Best Sex Podcasts by both Marie Claire and Esquire.

“If you want to lift society up - invest in women!” (Melinda Gates). In her book which we will be discussing, "The Moment of Lift", the author traces the link between women’s empowerment and the health of societies. She shows some of the tremendous opportunities that exist right now to “turbo charge” change and provides simple and effective ways each of us can make a difference. The Study Group for those 50 and over led by Bernie Beach and Sigrid Hermon is held Mondays April 6 through April 20.

Location: 202 S. Thayer
Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

The little-known Syrian American peddling economy (1870-1955) is an unexpected site for parsing how American perceptions of Arabs have long been rooted in ideas of their sexual and gender difference. After leaving Ottoman Greater Syria, Syrians sold goods across the U.S. while navigating systems of racism that intertwined with gender and sexual norms. Peddling enabled their survival and transformed their family structure. Syrian women participated robustly in the peddling economy and their diverse forms of labor attracted scrutiny, particularly from social welfare reformers. I read the social welfare archive for the associations between transience, transgressions of women’s roles, sexual non-normativity, and Orientalist tropes of difference in order to consider how Syrian women were racialized through their participation in peddling economies. This analysis shows how Syrian women’s peddling practices were directly at odds with notions of white, middle class femininity and thus a threat to some Syrians’ claims of whiteness. This talk also illuminates internal Syrian dynamics of class and its intersections with gender, examining Syrian women both as “clients” of social welfare and as social reformers themselves.

CANCELLED: EIHS-Women's Studies Lecture: Ukuphazama iNatali: Bringing Queer and Indigenous Studies Approaches to South African History and Beyond (April 16, 2020 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/63596 63596-15808577@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, April 16, 2020 4:00pm
Location: Tisch Hall
Organized By: Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies

How can critical indigenous and queer theoretical approaches transform the way we think about colonial history in South Africa (and beyond)? If settler colonialism itself is presented as a form of orientation, of making a recognizable and inhabitable home space for European arrivals on indigenous land, then native peoples and their continued resistance can serve to ‘queer’ these attempted forms of order. In such circumstances, the customs, practices, and potentially the very bodies of indigenous peoples can become queer despite remaining ostensibly heterosexual in orientation and practice, as their existence constantly undermines the desired order of an emergent settler state.

T.J. Tallie is an assistant professor of African history at the University of San Diego. He specializes in the comparative settler colonial and imperial history, with a focus on South Africa. His interests include colonialism, gender and racial identity, indigeneity, sexuality, and religious expression. He is the recent author of Queering Colonial Natal: Indigeneity and the Violence of Belonging in Southern Africa.

Free and open to the public.

This event presented by the Department of Women's Studies and the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

Since the nation’s founding, Americans have used images to define political power and gender roles. Popular pictures praised male political leaders, while cartoons mocked women who sought rights. In the mid-nineteenth century, women’s rights activists like Sojourner Truth and Susan B. Anthony challenged these powerful norms by distributing engraved and photographic portraits that represented women as political leaders. Over time, suffragists developed a national visual campaign to win voting rights. Their photographs captured their public protests and demonstrated their dedication to their cause for mass audiences.

Allison K. Lange, PhD is an assistant professor of history at the Wentworth Institute of Technology, published essayist and public historian. In preparation for the 2020 centennial of the Nineteenth Amendment, she is curating exhibitions at the Massachusetts Historical Society and Harvard’s Schlesinger Library. Lange’s talk is based on her forthcoming book, "Picturing Political Power: Images in the Women’s Suffrage Movement."

This lecture is a part of the Clements Library's Randolph G. Adams Lecture Series and is co-sponsored by the Michigan Photographic Historical Society.

The Nineteenth Amendment is popularly celebrated for enfranchising half of all Americans overnight. But who actually gained the ability to vote after the woman suffrage amendment was ratified? In “Suffrage at 100,” Liette Gidlow, Ph.D., explores the “long history” of the Nineteenth Amendment, connecting it to the voting rights struggles of the 1960s and today.

Liette Gidlow is an associate professor of history at Wayne State University and the Mellon-Schlesinger Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Harvard University, where she is participating in the Long Nineteenth Amendment Project at the Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America.

Organized By: Institute for Research on Women and Gender

Speakers:
- LaVelle Ridley, PhD Candidate, English & Women's Studies; Multidisciplinary Transgender Health Project, Institute for Research on Women and Gender, University of Michigan (she/her)
- Susan Burgess, Distinguished Professor, Center for Law, Justice & Culture, Political Science, Ohio University

- Anna Kirkland, Director, Institute for Research on Women and Gender; Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, Women's and Gender Studies, University of Michigan (she/her)

This conversation brings together experts in LGBTQ law, politics, health, and transgender rights to reflect on Bostock v. Clayton County, GA, the recent ruling from the Supreme Court affirming that Title VII employment discrimination law covers sexual orientation and gender identity under sex discrimination. That decision came down just three days after the Trump administration issued a final rule rescinding transgender inclusion in the non-discrimination protections of Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act.

Experts will discuss what these cases and regulations mean for LGBT rights in this political moment. This event is designed to be conversational and informative and to fit within your lunch hour.

This remote event will be presented via Zoom. Please register in advance, here: http://myumi.ch/4pz2j

The killing of George Floyd, in the wake of the horrific and obscene history of the killings of unarmed black people by the police, has focused attention like never before on the systemic anti-black racism of the criminal-legal system in the United States. To be sure, the massive expansion and militarization of policing and incarceration are in some ways of comparatively recent origin. Yet they also have a much deeper origin in, and are inextricably connected to, a longer history of the judicial and extra-judicial violence against black people in the continent. The racist inequities of the criminal-legal system, indeed, are not a bug, but a feature.

Our panel of experts, scholars of the United States at the University of Michigan, will help us explore, beyond the headlines, the reach of the long arm of the carceral state in society as well as the challenges and opportunities that have been thrown up by the contemporary protests against the systemic violence of the state. The stakes for understanding the working of the carceral state are documented by the Documenting Criminalization and Confinement project of the University of Michigan’s Carceral State Project. However, the momentous protests against anti-Black racism as well as the broad public support they have received both within the United States and across the world—the clamor heard round the world—have also created a novel opportunity for implementing and imagining futures beyond a blatantly rigged carceral framework.

Panelists:
• Melissa Burch, Anthropology, University of Michigan
• Matthew Countryman, Afroamerican and African History, American Culture, History, University of Michigan
• Matthew Lassiter, History, Urban and Regional Planning, University of Michigan
• William D. Lopez, Health Behavior and Health Education, University of Michigan

Moderator:
• Mrinalini Sinha, History, University of Michigan

Join us for a free, virtual, author event for the new book "Conquering Heroines: How Women Fought Sex Bias at Michigan and Paved the Way for Title IX", by Sara Fitzgerald, published in July by the University of Michigan Press!

In 1970, a courageous group of women in Ann Arbor worked together on an objective that seemed beyond reach at the time—force the University of Michigan to treat women the same as men. Drawing on oral histories from archives as well as new interviews with living participants, "Conquering Heroines" chronicles that pivotal period of history for the University of Michigan and women in higher education.

Author Sara Fitzgerald is a former editor and new-media developer for the Washington Post and was the first woman to serve as editor-in-chief of the Michigan Daily.

Instructor Beth Spencer, a mostly-retired geriatric social worker, developed and facilitated Women & Aging through Literature & Reflective Writing for several years. The Study Group will be held on Fridays, September 18, October 16, November 20, and December 18 from 3-5 p.m.

Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

A look back to the period 1880-1930 is quite instructive to understand the present moment. Then as now, there was a pandemic, more than one serious economic downturn, sanctioned segregation and assorted other issues.
This study group will introduce you to some real heroines such as Jane Addams, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Sarah Winnemucca and Ida Tarbell, who did amazing feats with literacy, attempting to address these matters in the Modern period, using their literacy abilities as exemplars and sponsors of literacy to address social justice issues. Important lessons for contemporary problems arise from the work of these women. Instructor Alice Horning, professor emerita Oakland University has been studying and teaching about literacy >30 years.
The Study Group meets on Wednesdays Sept. 23 to Oct. 14 from 10:00-11:30 a.m. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access this Study Group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

Children's living arrangements are diverse and complex, and a robust body of research has documented links between living arrangements, economic wellbeing, and child outcomes. Despite increasing recognition of the diversity in children's living arrangements most research continues to focus on the nuclear family. This talk draws on a number of published and papers in progress that focus on shared living arrangements of children in the U.S. - examining the people children live with beyond their nuclear family. I will describe trends in household extension over time and across the child's life course showing differences by key demographic groups and patterns of coresidence. I find that although shared living arrangements among children have become more common over the last 20 years, this increase is nearly entirely driven by an increase in multigenerational/three-generation family households (grandparent, parent and child). In 1980, 5% of children lived in a multigenerational household and today nearly 10% do likewise. I'll present results of decomposition analyses that examine the factors that have led to this large increase. By understanding the diverse nature of children's living arrangements and how these arrangements are changing over time, we can better consider how public policies and programs might better support children's development.

BIO:
Natasha Pilkauskas is an assistant professor of public policy at the Ford School. Pilkauskas' research considers how social policy might improve the developmental and life trajectories of low-income children. Much of her research focuses on the living arrangements of low-income children, especially those who live with grandparents. Past and current projects also investigate the role of family/kin transfers in helping families make ends meet; links between maternal employment and school outcomes; the effectiveness of the Earned Income Tax Credit; and the effects of the Great Recession on low-income households. Pilkauskas received a Master of Public Policy from Harvard University and a PhD in social welfare policy from Columbia University.

Many institutional histories of rare book and manuscript libraries center on tales of prominent (and typically male) figures - the original collectors, directors, and major donors. But what happens to our understanding of the archive if we shift our perspective to allow for women’s contributions to the library to come to the forefront? Listen to a discussion between Clements Library curators and staff to learn more about how we can achieve this and what it enables.

Study abroad is not just for juniors. It's not just for language and international studies majors. It's not just for students from certain communities or socioeconomic backgrounds. No matter who you are, where you come from, or what you’re studying, a study abroad experience is available to you during your time at Michigan.

Whether you want to develop the skills you’ll need to compete in a global economy, cultivate your language competencies, or build meaningful connections with people from around the world, this is the best time in your life for a global experience.

Studying abroad often proves to be a pivotal experience, but deciding which program is the best fit can be daunting as you consider questions such as: How will this enhance my course of study? When should I go? For how long? Where? Can I afford it? How do I prepare? Will my credits transfer? The CGIS Study Abroad Virtual Fair is the best time to get all of your questions answered!

During the day of the virtual fair, you'll have instant access to academic advisors, education abroad advisors, Office of Financial Aid & LSA Scholarship Office representatives, and program representatives as well as scheduled events throughout the fair!

A panel discussion presented in partnership with the American Academy of Arts & Sciences

What does it mean to be a citizen of the United States? The Constitution does not define who gets to be a citizen, or what citizenship means. Rather, citizenship has been defined over time, often through struggle and activism by people who were denied the full rights of citizenship. The Clements Library at the University of Michigan in partnership with the American Academy of Arts & Sciences will host a virtual panel discussion featuring Derrick Spires of Cornell University (author of *The Practice of Citizenship: Black Politics and Print Culture in the Early United States*) and Martha Jones of Johns Hopkins University (author of *Birthright Citizens: A History of Race and Rights in Antebellum America* and *Vanguard: How Black Women Broke Barriers, Won the Vote, and Insisted on Equality for All*). The conversation will be moderated by Ben Vinson III, Provost of Case Western Reserve University.

In anticipation of the discussion, Clements Library Director Paul Erickson highlights recent work by Spires, Jones and AAA&S in this blog post: myumi.ch/2DlAZ

T. Ayo Alston teaches and practices a signature theatrical style of West African drum and dance culture that captures the strength and power of women and community. Ayo is the founder, executive director, composer, and choreographer of Ayodele Drum and Dance, a performance training organization created for women to affirm their self-confidence and strength. Through Ayodele, she has performed, educated, fostered interpersonal healing, and created artistic work from a foundation of traditional African cultures fused with contemporary dance styles.

Throughout her career Ayo has taught, choreographed, and performed at schools and universities locally and nationally, as well as in African and Brazilian countries, as an independent artist and as a member of other companies and organizations, such as Dance Africa, Drum Cafe West, Le Bagatae Company of Guinea, Les Ballets Africans, and Muntu Dance Theatre.

In the last two years Ayo has been focused on fine-tuning and sharing her ability to compose music on African instruments, such as the kalimba. This resulted in her accepting a role as a lead actress in and musical composer for Mies Julie at Victory Gardens Theater and as a composer and musician for The Lion King Jr. at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM).

Ayo serves as an adjunct professor at Columbia College Chicago and on the Dance faculty at Chicago High School of the Arts. She also has developed drum and dance programs that are thriving in prestigious schools, such as Jones College Prep and Walter Payton College Prep, where Ayodele has trained dancers to teach and gain professional artistic skills and experience.

In the new virtual series, PERFORMING THE MOVEMENT, PERFORMING THE MOMENT, Center for World Performance Studies invites performers and scholars from diverse disciplines to reflect on how performance is being used to respond to the political, social, health and environmental crises that we face at this moment. Each guest will give a 30 minute presentation, and then engage in 30 minutes of Q&A. Sessions will take place over Zoom and require advance registration. You can read about the panelists, register for these events, find recommended reading and resources and/or request recordings of past events at https://lsa.umich.edu/world-performance.

If you require an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact the Center for World Performance Studies, at 734-936-2777. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

Allison Lange’s talk is based on her book, "Picturing Political Power: Images in the Women’s Suffrage Movement," published in May 2020 by the University of Chicago Press. The book focuses on the ways that women’s rights activists and their opponents used images to define gender and power during the suffrage movement.

Presented in partnership with the Michigan Photographic Historical Society.

Allison K. Lange is an assistant professor of history at the Wentworth Institute of Technology. She received her PhD in history from Brandeis University. Various institutions have supported her work, including the National Endowment for the Humanities, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Library of Congress, and American Antiquarian Society. Her writing has appeared in Imprint, The Atlantic, and The Washington Post. Lange also engages in public history. She has worked with the National Women’s History Museum and curated exhibitions for the Boston Public Library’s Leventhal Map Center. In preparation for the 2020 centennial of the Nineteenth Amendment, she is curator of exhibitions at the Massachusetts Historical Society and Harvard’s Schlesinger Library.

Today, data science is a form of power. It has been used to expose injustice, improve health outcomes, and topple governments. But it has also been used to discriminate, police, and surveil. This potential for good, on the one hand, and harm, on the other, makes it essential to ask: Data science by whom? Data science for whom? Data science with whose interests in mind? Authors of Data Feminism, Catherine D’Ignazio and Lauren Klein, address how feminist thinking can be operationalized in order to imagine more ethical and equitable data practices in their keynote speech at the MIDAS Annual Symposium on November 10 at 9:00 AM. Please register to attend this virtual event.

This special lecture honors Dr. Sower’s extraordinary scientific contributions to the field of women’s health and to inspire young scholars to transcend the boundaries between varying fields of research to advance women’s health. Dr. Sower’s unique insights into the breadth and depth of underlying physiological processes common to multiple diseases as well as her efforts to understand the linkages between ovarian and chronological aging has contributed substantially to the advancement of science. As a result of her contributions, women’s health grew from a peripheral field of study to a major discipline and we honor her legacy by inviting a groundbreaking researcher to present a lecture in her name.

A: We'll start on Zoom, on Tuesdays at 3:00 p.m. ET, beginning January 19, 2021. Our plan is for this group to grow and expand to continue into the future and not just the winter term.

Q: Is the group for faculty only?
A: We may expand in the future, but for starters, the group is for faculty, including postdocs and research investigators, on any track and in any discipline(s).
