The goal of the Mentoring Plan Workshop is to enhance the mentoring relationship between the student and research faculty mentor/advisor. During this workshop, students and faculty will have the opportunity to develop a mentoring plan. A mentoring plan is a two-way agreement about goals, needs, and expectations; it is co-written by the student and research faculty mentor/advisor. It is an excellent way to establish and support mentor-mentee relationships.

Because this program is aimed to enhance the mentoring relationship, mentors and students are expected to attend the workshop together. (Please note: If a faculty mentor has previously attended, he/she may opt to only attend the mentor-student team meeting time to develop the mentoring plan.)

Pre-registration is required of both the student and faculty mentor at https://goo.gl/forms/Tl3wUziXy7IexAy82).

This workshop will provide an overview of several different types of interviews and how to best prepare for each, including behavioral, technical, case, and phone/Skype interviews. We will review strategies for answering interview questions, such as the STAR format, and discuss what to emphasize when answering interview questions. Preparing for common interview questions is only one part of the process - learn what to wear and bring to an interview and how to follow up with an employer after the interview. Come learn how to ace the interview!

The goal of CSAAW is to support graduate students interested in complex systems research. Through our regular meetings, students discuss their own work and receive feedback from other students, faculty, and researchers. For some meetings, students present "tutorials" on various complex systems related topics or methodology. Other meetings consist of talks by and discussions with invited speakers who are active in complex systems research.

Professor Patrick Grim has taught for Complex Systems for several years, and organizes many research groups with students - a great mentor to our Complex Systems flock. Professor Grim is a retired Emeritus Philosophy Professor from SUNY at Stoneybrook.

We will read and write with the objective of bringing places to life. This course for those 50 and over is open to novel writing, short stories, memoir and life writing, as well as
poetry.

Whether writing of home or places of exile -- we will move through time with characters and through ideas -- by the examination of setting. Whether you bring material or an idea, or neither-- we will get ‘there’. We may generate new work or prioritize workshop activity (and we’ll be reading a variety of excerpts for inspiration). Be open. Be willing. Be kind.

Instructor Clarisse Baleja Saidi, a novelist and recent graduate of the Helen Zell MFA Program at the University of Michigan, will conduct these 90 minute sessions on Tuesdays from January 23 through March 27.

This is a College of Engineering event.

Are you a graduate student with a virtually impossible reading load? You are not alone. While it is possible to read and understand text more quickly, real reading efficiency comes from reading text more strategically. In this workshop, we will learn about strategies for prioritizing attention, understanding and remembering what we read, and aligning reading strategy with our purpose for reading (e.g. preparing for seminar discussion, developing a literature review, refining our research methods, or writing a response paper). Bring a paper or electronic copy example of the kind of text you’re trying to read more efficiently.

He has authored 15 books, mainly concerned with agroecosystems and more than 200 publications in theoretical ecology, tropical ecology and agroecology. He is a founding member of the New World Agriculture and Ecology Group. He is currently a professor of ecology at the University of Michigan.

*************

This event kicks off Science for the People's weekend-long convention. During the convention, we will be making collective decisions about our organizational structure, ratifying our foundational principles and bylaws, and developing national projects, we plan to include time to get to know one another, to learn from each other, and to further our political self-education. The original Science for the People arose in 1969 out of the anti-war movement and lasted until 1989. With radical analysis and non-hierarchical governing structure, Science for the People tackled the militarization of scientific research, the corporate control of research agendas, the political implications of sociobiology and other scientific theories, the environmental consequences of energy policy, inequalities in health care, and many other issues.

Its members opposed racism, sexism, and classism in science and above all sought to mobilize people working in scientific fields to become active in agitating for science, technology, and medicine that would serve social needs rather than military and corporate interests. They organized in universities and communities, published a magazine offering sharp political analysis, and sought meaningful scientific exchange internationally in Vietnam, China, Cuba, Nicaragua, and other countries.

Some of the issues we face today have changed in important ways, but fundamental questions of power, ideology, and democracy in science remain.

Keynote Speaker:
Jacob Morgan

Keynote:
The Future of Work is all About Employee Experience

We invest a great deal of time and money to improve employee engagement, yet our efforts often seem to miss the mark. How can that be? Jacob Morgan, one of the world’s foremost authorities on the future of work and employee engagement, uses his ongoing research of 252 organizations to show how short term “adrenaline shot” programs such as job sharing or working from home, aren’t necessarily the answer. He will demonstrate how the world’s top organizations are redesigning work around their people by focusing on three environments: culture, technology, and the physical workspace. He will share why employee experience is the next big area of investment, what the top organizations are doing, and how you can go about creating an Experiential Organization.

On behalf of the MUSE Organizing Committee*, you are cordially invited to participate in the 2018 Michigan University-wide Sustainability and Environment (MUSE) Conference.

- The annual flagship event of the MUSE Initiative, the MUSE Conference provides a unique venue for sharing research, building new connections, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among all members of the University of Michigan community engaged in the broad range of sustainability and environment-related research. We welcome the involvement of U-M graduate students, as well as University leadership, faculty, and research fellows from all disciplines, including those in arts, humanities, engineering, and natural and social sciences. The 2018 MUSE Conference will consist of interdisciplinary lectures by speakers including Susan Scotti Parrish, author of The Flood Year 1927: A Cultural History, and Claire Vaye Watkins, author of Gold Fame Citrus, as well as panel discussions, a poster session, network-and skill-building workshops, and a public keynote address and reception at Zingerman’s Greyline event space.

- Participants will have opportunities to present both preliminary and final research findings. Thematic facilitated workshops will engage participants at all career stages in structured collaboration and discussion about emerging developments and debates in cross-cutting research topics.

- Please consider participating in the 2018 MUSE Conference by submitting a short abstract. Abstracts on topics related to sustainability and environment may include (but are not limited to) human behavior, environmental history, policymaking and governance, corporate social and environmental responsibility, public health, built environment and infrastructure, land use, energy, water, climate, and ecosystems. Themed interdisciplinary sessions will be designed once abstracts have been reviewed by a selection committee. We encourage submissions to present either specific research outcomes or broader themes related to your research interests.

- Both oral and poster presentation opportunities are available. Short-form oral presentations may be used to share preliminary results or brief research summaries, while longer presentations allow for more depth. When submitting an abstract, you may also opt-in to facilitate a workshop discussion and/or be considered for a brief Up-goer 5-style presentation at the public reception (explaining your research using the “ten hundred” most-used English words).

- The deadline for abstract submission is Thursday, November 9. Please see link for abstract registration. For more information, please go to our conference website:
http://muse-initiative.umich.edu/conference/.

Michigan University-Wide Sustainability & Environment Conference 2018 (February 15, 2018 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/45858 45858-10321738@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, February 15, 2018 9:00am
Location: Michigan League
Organized By: School for Environment and Sustainability

In this study, we investigate the role of network structure for voluntary cooperation on networks. Numerous public goods experiments have shown that many people contribute more to the public good than pure self-interest can easily explain. Correspondingly, there exists a large body of experimental evidence and behavioral explanations. As a natural extension, we deploy the standard linear public goods game in a network setting, where only connected neighbors on the network can contribute to and benefit from the same collection of public goods. In the proposed experiment, we utilize a series of locally tree-like regular graphs to examine if the network structure will affect learning and other-regarding preferences (social preferences). Building upon the various network structures in the experiment, we would like to employ structural models that characterize the patterns of local interactions and calibrate the empirical population distribution of such characteristics. Lastly, the experimental evidence will support the construction of ”Empirical agent-based models,” which we plan to use for ”out of sample prediction.” Based on our understanding of local interactions, we are now ready to explore the provision of public goods in networks with other typologies — be it of larger size or different characteristics.

Location: Michigan League
Organized By: Rackham Graduate School

This symposium will be centered around strategies to transform political activism in our role as students, with the goal of protecting, engaging, and further advancing the interests and ideas of communities of color. As aspiring scholars, administrators, political leaders, and professionals, what can we do to prepare for, survive, and thrive under unfavorable political climates? More specifically, how can we continue to build community and coalitions that promotes diversity, inclusion, and equity for all marginalized communities?

The symposium will serve as a positive professional and scholarly space where students will be able to gain knowledge on the ways in which scholars have historically engaged social justice and the fight for diversity, inclusion, and equity. The event will feature multiple workshops and panels exploring strategies to navigate institutional barriers to ignite social change. Moreover, this symposium will also provide students with an opportunity to share their research ideas and agenda, and explore pathways for successfully achieving their career aspirations through scholar-activism.

ABSTRACT.

We show that a parsimonious spatial model with two dimensions can explain the bulk of mutual fund voting. We estimate the model using a comprehensive dataset of the 5,332,353 votes cast on 33,262 proposals from 3,844 portfolio companies from 2010 to 2015 by 3,617 mutual funds that in total hold almost 80% of mutual fund industry assets. The two dimensions of funds’ corporate governance preferences reflect the role of the two leading proxy advisors. Mutual funds are clustered into three ‘parties’—the Managerialist Party, the Shareholder Intervention Party, and the Shareholder Veto Party—that follow distinctive philosophies of corporate governance and shareholders’ role. We use our methodology in turn to construct measures of the individual distributions of preferences of public companies’ shareholder bases. Our preference measures for mutual funds and for public companies’ shareholder bases generate a range of insights about the broader system of corporate governance.

Modern finance theory and investment practice have shifted toward “passive investing.” The current consensus is that most savers should invest in mutual funds or ETFs that are (i) welldiversified, (ii) low-cost, and (iii) expose one’s portfolio to age-appropriate stock-market risk. The law governing trustees, broker-dealers, 401(k) plan managers and other investment fiduciaries has evolved to push them gently toward this consensus. But these laws still provide broad scope for fiduciaries to recommend that clients invest instead in specific assets which they believe will produce “alpha” by outperforming the market. Seeking alpha comes at a cost, however, in giving up some of the benefits of the well-diversified, low-cost, appropriate risk baseline. Too little attention has been given in fiduciary law to this tradeoff and thus to when seeking alpha is prudent and beneficial for savers, and when it is not.

This Article begins to fill that gap by making two contributions. First, we provide the first benchmark estimates of how much alpha is required before ordinary investors would be better off departing from the consensus. For example, we estimate that a person of average risk aversion would annually need to beat the market by (i.e., obtain alpha of) between 5% and 15% before being willing to entirely forego the benefits of diversification and hold an individual stock (and that during a financial crisis a person would need an annual alpha between 9% and 18%). Second, we consider the implications of our results for the various branches of law governing investment fiduciaries. We propose generally that fiduciaries should be informed about these alpha tradeoffs and explain them to their clients before recommending (or executing) investments that deviate from the low-cost, well-diversified, age-appropriate exposure standard. We argue that through new technology this kind of information can be given to retirement savers and others at quite low cost. Our results also have a variety of more specific applications. For example, our work shows that the value of diversification increases during periods of market upheaval, and therefore duty to diversify of trustees of personal trusts and of employee retirement plans should likewise strengthen during such periods.

You're invited to participate in the Ann Arbor Art + Feminism (AAAF) Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, a nodal event of the international Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon campaign. Join us for a communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to art and feminism. We'll provide tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian, in-person assistance, reference materials, and refreshments. Bring your laptop, power cord and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. People of all gender identities and expressions are invited to participate. Please register to participate (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/ann-arbor-artfeminism-wikipedia-edit-a-thon-2018-tickets-42885467588) or stop by to show your support.

Why We Edit: Wikimedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not. Content is skewed by the lack of female, queer, and PoC participation. This represents an alarming absence in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge. Let’s change that.

Please come, and consider sharing invitations to participate with your networks.

Hosted by the University of Michigan Library in partnership with the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA), the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, and the Ann Arbor District Library.

We make assumptions all the time; it's a natural part of life. At the same time, we must also work to critically understand these assumptions, and leave space for people who do not fit the narratives we have been socialized to "know." Law and Economics Workshop: Noncompetes in the US Labor Force (March 29, 2018 4:10pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/50961 50961-11930596@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 29, 2018 4:10pm
Location: Hutchins Hall
Organized By: Law & Economics

Abstract
Using nationally representative survey data on 11,505 labor force participants, we examine the use, implementation, and effects of noncompete agreements. Nearly 1 in 5 labor force participants were bound by noncompetes in 2014, and nearly 40% had signed at least one in the past. Noncompetes are more likely to be found in high-skill, high-paying jobs, but they are also surprisingly common in low-skill, low-paying jobs. We document that less than 10% of employees negotiate over noncompetes, that roughly one-third of noncompetes are signed after accepting the job offer, and that nearly two-thirds of job applicants had no alternative job opportunities when they were asked to agree to a noncompete. Differences in the competitive circumstances under which noncompetes are signed are associated with starkly different outcomes for employees: those presented with a noncompete before they accept a job offer and those who have alternative employment options earn 19% higher wages, receive 14% more training, and are 13% more satisfied in their job than those not bound by noncompetes. However, those asked to sign after accepting an offer and/or without other employment options are 15% less satisfied in their job and experience no wage and training benefits. In contrast to the existing literature, we find little role for the enforceability of noncompetes in explaining their use and their association with wages and training.

------------------------------
Improv is a form of stage acting that is unscripted. The actors create spontaneous scenes without previous preparation. Using improvisational games, you can learn how to start thinking on your feet and have fun instead of worrying about what you will say next.
As graduate students, we use improvisational skills all the time in our daily lives. From coming up with creative solutions after an experiment doesn't go as planned to answering questions at conferences!
Come polish those skills and learn new ones in the funnest way possible!
In this event, our coaches will teach you improv games in small groups of ~10 students, and then you'll get the option to practice your skills in front of a slightly larger audience!
No experience necessary. Our coaches are fun and supportive!

Refreshments will be provided.

Law and Economics Workshop: A Fundamental Error in the Law of Torts: The Restriction of Strict Liability to Uncommon Activities (April 5, 2018 4:10pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/50963 50963-11930597@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, April 5, 2018 4:10pm
Location: Hutchins Hall
Organized By: Law & Economics

Abstract

Courts generally insist that two criteria be met before imposing strict liability. The first––that the injurer’s activity must be dangerous––is sensible because strict liability possesses general advantages in controlling risk. But the second––that the activity must be uncommon––is ill-advised because it exempts all common activities from strict liability, no matter how dangerous. Thus, the harm generated by the large swath of common dangerous activities––from hunting, to construction, to the operation of railroads––tends to be socially excessive. After developing this theme, the Article addresses the question of how the uncommon activity requirement could have arisen and finds that its legal pedigree is problematic: it was invented by the authors of the first Restatement of Torts. The conclusion is that the uncommon activity requirement for the imposition of strict liability should be eliminated.

Water, Weirs, and Itchy Welts: commemorating Shushtar in transregional contexts, 1678-1830 (April 9, 2018 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/51564 51564-12167540@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 9, 2018 5:00pm
Location: 202 S. Thayer
Organized By: Iranian Studies

The Persianate Studies Workshop is pleased to welcome Derek Mancini-Lander (SOAS, University of London), who will be presenting a paper titled “Water, Weirs, and Itchy Welts: commemorating Shushtar in transregional contexts, 1678-1830” on Monday, April 9, 5:00-7:00 PM in room 2022 South Thayer Building.

Mancini-Lander’s paper contributes to the study of transregional Persianate communities by examining a corpus of biographical and historical works centered on the town of Shushtar. These works were composed by members of the eminent family of Nuri sayyids of Shushtar, who moved between Khuzistan, the Deccan, Bengal, and the shrine-towns of Iraq, and whose writings spanned four generations and encompassed a variety of genres, including local history, geography, self-narrative, travel-writing, family history, Shiʿi jurisprudence, medicine, and astrology. The texts of this corpus preserve a set of dialogues between generations of family members, who were deliberately engaging with one another’s memories of home, family, travel, and ideas, as each of them moved between Shushtar, Iraq-i Arab, and the kingdoms of Hind, and penned their narratives. Nonetheless, these writers appear to have maintained a sense of family solidarity and homeland even as they were dispersed throughout cities on both sides of the Indian Ocean.

In his presentation, Mancini-Lander will argue that the dialogic and intertextual nature of this corpus, where the boundaries between individual authors is fluid, provides a blueprint for understanding a process by which these authors negotiated two opposing, yet commensurately fluid sensibilities—one cosmopolitan and the other local. Focusing on the authors’ prevalent and intertwined conceits constructed around flows of water, disease, knowledge, and the Prophet’s seed, he contends that the logic of this negotiation becomes comprehensible. More importantly, by observing the historically contingent variations in strategy by which these writers emplot Shushstar’s history, he traces their development as they changed over time.

Mancini-Lander is a Lecturer in the History of Iran as SOAS, London. In 2012, he completed his dissertation in UM’s Near Eastern Studies Department under the supervision of Kathryn Babayan. Entitled “Memory on the Boundary of Empire: Narrating Place in the Early Modern Historiography of Yazd,” it was awarded the Malcolm H. Kerr Dissertation Prize (Humanities) by the Middle East Studies Association in 2013. Mancini-Lander’s research focuses on the cultural history of the late medieval and early modern Persianate world, with a particular interest in urban and local historiography.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Organized By: The Center for the Study of Complex Systems

Abstract:

Smoking and mental illness are leading contributors to mortality and morbidity in the U.S. They are also significantly associated with each other, with substantially higher rates of smoking among people with mental illness compared to the general population. Depression in particular is a commonly occurring mental disorder. Research shows that comorbidity of smoking and depression are subject to feedback effects, as depression is known to predict future smoking, while smoking also predicts future depression. To date, there has been little evidence on the health gains associated with interrupting this dynamic through interventions that target patients with depression. If implemented, cessation treatment for smokers with depression could lead to even greater improvements to population health. However the population benefit of integrating cessation treatment into mental health care has not yet been estimated. I develop the first joint model of smoking and depression co-morbidity in the US, projecting future patterns of smoking and depression through 2050.This model can analyze the independent and synergistic effects of intervention strategies on smoking, depression, and mortality outcomes.

Yellowdig is a social media platform designed solely to support academic activities. It offers all the common features we expect, including posting text, video, audio, and images, and using hashtags, @mentions, and upvoting, but also includes instructor tools for assessing student activity that are integrated into the Canvas Gradebook.

LSA conducted a limited pilot during the Winter 2018 term to assess Yellowdig as a tool for increasing student engagement and connections to course content. Professor Mika LaVaque-Manty used Yellowdig in his course, Introduction to Political Theory, and he will share his experiences. We will also provide a high level overview of the features Yellowdig offers.

Canvas Discussions are an excellent way to build a sense of community, engage in course content, and to assess learning. The key, however, is to make Discussions meaningful and manageable for instructors and students. Discussions should be integrated into the course so students see a meaningful connection to their learning. Clear guidelines and reasonable parameters for participation ensure online discussion is a manageable part of the course.

This session will explore best practices for online discussion including how to ask the right questions, manage time, and bring the discussion back to the class. We will also examine how to design clear, simple Canvas Rubrics to outline expectations.

Participants use mindfulness to develop a new understanding and relationship with emotional and situational experiences, through using curiosity, acceptance, and compassion. This therapy group is supplemented by daily at-home practice by participants.
The exact time will be based on participant availability.
