We all have triggers that set us off. Maybe it’s too much traffic or that certain someone who gets under your skin. To be human means sometimes getting caught by life’s irritations and disappointments.

But when that occasional reaction becomes a routine inner state of irritability, anger, anxiety, stress or sadness, you’re in trouble.

You either manage your triggers or your triggers manage you. Unfortunately, just understanding this doesn’t tell you how to change it. This workshop will delve into the reasons we get triggered and how to change our thinking and responses so that we can take back our power.

Through presentation, discussion, and exercises, we will work together to help you find strategies and solutions to help make the shift from your triggered self to your bigger self for a more effective and enjoyable life.

Latinx in STEAM Wikipedia Edit-a-thon (September 18, 2018 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/53959 53959-13504391@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, September 18, 2018 4:00pm
Location: Hatcher Graduate Library
Organized By: University Library

Join us for a communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to Latinx communities and to recognize the accomplishments of Latinx folx in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. We'll provide tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian, in-person assistance, reference materials, and refreshments. Bring your laptop, power cord and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. People of all backgrounds are invited to participate.

Wikimedia’s trouble in representing topics related to gender, race, and nationality are well-documented. While the reasons for the gaps are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not. Content is skewed by the lack of female, queer, and PoC participation. This represents an alarming absence in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge. In an attempt to help address these issues and to broaden the community base of Wikipedians, and as part of the Latinx Heritage Month Celebrations at the University of Michigan, the Library is hosting this Latinx Wikipedia Edit-a-thon.

This event is made possible through collaborations between the University of Michigan Library, La Casa, and the Latinx Heritage Month Planning Committee.

We will review strategies for answering interview questions, such as the STAR format, and discuss what to emphasize when answering interview questions. Preparing for common interview questions is only one part of the process - learn what to wear and bring to an interview and how to follow up with an employer after the interview. Come learn how to ace the interview!

Interested in recruiting for a consulting position but unfamiliar with the case interview format? This workshop, brought to you by Accenture, will be an opportunity for you to learn more about the case interviews that consulting firms use today. The presentation will cover a range of topics including the different formats of cases, common questions and frameworks, and tips on how to prepare. There is no "right" answer to the case. Firms are interested in how clearly you define the problem, how logically you structure your analysis, and how well you communicate your thoughts.

For most of the workshop, two Engineering seniors who have recruited and/or interned in consulting will demonstrate an actual case interview. There will be ample time for questions.

Food will be provided. Space is limited, please register through the Events section of Engineering Careers, by Symplicity, if planning to attend.

Whether you are writing a research article, proposal, conference abstract or dissertation, it is important to pay attention to style. Academic style is not so much a matter of following rules, but more a matter of making choices. Even if you are aware of the stylistic conventions of your field and of academic writing in general, you may also seek ways to more strongly position yourself and create your scholarly identity. In this workshop we will discuss some common features of academic style and how to make effective choices. Bring a text you are currently working on for analysis.

In partnership with MSRW (Media Studies Research Workshop) and GMSI (Global Media Studies Initiative), this session invites participants to define their approach to global media studies. Invited guests will give flash talks that provide working definitions and case studies that exemplify their research. The session will then open up to everyone for a group workshop. The goals of the event are to bring attention to long-established scholarship in global media studies, build a critical media studies toolkit with methodological specificity and ‘working definitions’ of what Global Media Studies might mean, and continue the conversation about how
to properly locate the U.S. and other privileged geographies within global media studies. Attendees are encouraged (but not required) to bring methods, case studies, or examples from their work to discuss.

The all day celebration aims to put students in the driver’s seat of decision making. We will explore the topic of VOTING and how voting and not voting impacts students and their peers (students will be able to register to vote too!). Students will learn what they can do in their communities to create change (regardless if they can vote or not). Live performances, exhibition posters on voting, workshops, food, and entertainment will make this event one that must not be missed.

When: Tuesday, October 9, 2018
Where: The Grove and Duderstadt Center
Time: 11:30am-1:00pm
Special Guest: Ruby Sales–Building a Vibrant Youth Culture at 6:30pm in the new Taubman College Commons.
Light refreshments will be served.

Ruby Nell Sales looks at her work as a calling rather than a career. She answered the call to social justice as a teenager at Tuskegee Institute where she joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and worked on voter registration in Lowndes County, Alabama. Sales has made the struggle for racial justice one of the centerpieces of her work through the SpiritHouse Project. Recognizing a need to nurture the hope that still resides in young people as well as to revive an intergenerational community and human compassion, in 2016 the SpiritHouse Project introduced Hope Zones.™ They are alternative learning spaces designed to strengthen the hope, courage, reason, and will of young people to individually and collectively stand up for themselves with dignity, clarity and nonviolent persistence. According to the Harvard Gazette, Ruby spoke about the fight for racial equality in the U.S. and shared, “Even in the face of challenges, there are reasons for hope. Freedom must be seen as a constant struggle. We don’t have to give in to despair.”

Healing Justice Workshop Series (October 16, 2018 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/55873 55873-13789158@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, October 16, 2018 7:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Semester in Detroit

Announcing a special edition workshop series for Fall 2018: Healing Justice as Building Cultural Resilience
These workshops, coordinated by SID faculty member Diana Copeland, will be held Tuesdays at the Cass Corridor Commons from 7pm-9pm beginning on October 16. All workshops are free and open to the public and will include a light dinner.

Cultural organizing places culture at the center of an organizing strategy. It can be done to unite people through the humanity of culture and the democracy of participation. This fall we will explore the ways in which healing justice; creativity and arts enhance cultural organizing through a series of unique workshops led by Detroiters that are at the forefront of this movement. This type of creative organizing empowers communities to come together in celebration of culture while developing valuable skills that challenge power and oppression.

Healing Justice is woven through each of the workshops. Dr. Page of the Kindred Healing Justice Collective (often attributed with coining the phrase) describes Healing Justice as identifying how we can holistically respond to and intervene on generational trauma and violence, and to bring collective practices that can impact and transform the consequences of oppression on our bodies, hearts and minds.”

RSVP is encouraged, but not required.

Transportation from Ann Arbor will be provided. If you need transportation, please let us know by emailing us at semesterindetroit@umich.edu.

Workshop Schedule:
October 16th: Use of folk magic as defense against colonial structures and community oppression - Introduction to magic mediums for turning inwards and better understanding our own intuition.

Comics allow us to explain feelings and events in ways that bridge time and space and identity in unexpected ways. Comics can give us a way to tell stories we might not tell in other ways, or which might not be heard if we did. In this two part workshop, we’ll first hear from people about why and how comics worked for their stories, followed by a workshop activity for artists and storytellers to collaborate on telling stories about life with disabilities.

The Council for Disability Concerns produces an annual series of events designed to raise awareness of disability topics on campus and in our community. The events are presented by the University of Michigan Council for Disability Concerns in collaboration with University Human Resources, Michigan Medicine, and University Health Service. All events are free and everyone is welcome. If accommodations are needed, contact disability@umich.edu at least one week in advance.

All events are free and open to the public

Professor Sol Peláez will present a talk on sexual difference and Latin American literature, concentrating in the works of Luce Irigaray, Helène Cixous, Jacques Derrida, and Joan Copjec. Her research explores how the notion of infrapolitics articulates with sexual difference through a reading of Selva Almada’s work Chicas Muertas (2014). Almada, an Argentine writer, writes a hybrid text investigating 3 femicides in Argentina during the 80’s, the first years of the democratic transition. The writing of Almada traces the hierarchical powers of gender violence and opens a space to think woman beyond the patriarchal binaries and its violence. What does it mean to be a woman if one is not what the killers want, that is, a mere biological body? How not to be reduced to that minimal body that the murderers aim to appropriate totally? How not to be reduced to a mere body without rest, to escape that biological murdering determinism?

Peláez addresses those questions from a unique perspective which engages closely with feminism and Latin-American studies. She approaches an under researched area of philosophy, i.e. sexual difference, and articulates it with contemporary works of Latin American fiction and critical thought. Her scholar work on gender and sexuality is addressing historical gaps in both scholarships and responds to a particular urgency to discuss women’s work and intellectual contributions in our times.

In the workshop, Peláez will be present for an informal discussion of texts on sexual difference with faculty and graduate students.

Please e-mail rparrine@umich.com to RSVP to the workshop and receive the texts we will be discussing.

Everyone thinks they know what digital means. So pervasive are digital technologies in the 21st century that it is difficult to find critical distance from this immersive new world of ubiquitous connectivity, social media feeds, smartphones, mobile apps, responsive design, algorithmic recommendation systems, and voice-controlled home shopping assistants. While the question “what is the digital?” is compelling, the more pressing question might be instead: what does it mean to be alive in the digital age?

The 2019 Michigan Meetings will be a year-long event that critically engages with the big issues, urgent consequences, and radical possibilities for grappling with the meaning of life in this era of digital ubiquity. Whether defined as “animated corporeal existence,” “vitality,” or “to continue, to remain,” we see a profound opportunity to approach the digital world through a spectrum of the meaning of life-ness - alive, liveness, animated, lifelike, life-adjacent, consciousness, awareness, attention, awoke.

Digital culture reconfigures the way we know our bodies, our selves, our work, our objects and living spaces, our politics, and our sense of community. Like prior technologies, the digital gives rise to distinct new modes of experiencing time and space. Life is lived through constant network connectivity, GPS positioning, software databases, biotechnologies and wearable activity trackers, ‘smart’ buildings, cities, and homes, migrant digital labor, computational modeling, and the management of unfathomable streams of big data, and artificial intelligence. Subsequently, life is also lived through anxieties about identity theft, hacking, online harassment, piracy, surveillance and drone warfare.

Across campus, these questions will emerge in courses, colloquia, lectures, and informal conversations among students, faculty, staff, and peers. We aim to support meaningful and rewarding work in the technology industries or in academic research by giving students and faculty the history, critical perspective, and rigorous deep-dive into humanistic questions of “new” media life with this 2019 theme.

Healing Justice Workshop Series | #3 (October 30, 2018 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/55875 55875-13789160@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, October 30, 2018 7:00pm

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: CEW+

Explore the rapid transformation in gender consciousness and gender relations during this workshop with Dr. Pamela Aronson. Attendees will discuss changes stemming from three primary sources: the rise of women running for political office in 2018, the emergence of new social movement activism, and the creation of the “#MeToo” movement, which has sparked a new public discourse on sexual assault and harassment. While exploring the ways that this new consciousness has also faced backlash and opposition, this workshop will shed light on the emerging gender revolution by examining how rapid transformations are influencing everyday relationships between men and women. A hands-on wellness activity will be presented by the CEW+ Inspire team to complement this workshop. The discussion will be followed by a networking reception.

Free and open to the public. Please register by November 8th.

About the Presenter: Pamela Aronson is Professor of Sociology at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Her research examines how inequalities impact identities and the life course. Past research has considered young women’s transition to adulthood, perception of role models, work and family orientations, and attitudes toward feminism. She also studies class and gender differences in the experience of postsecondary education and career development. Gender and feminist consciousness, as well as the impact of internalized misogyny in electoral politics, are the focus of her new research project.

Drawn to History: Dementia, Temporality and Graphic Life Narrative (November 30, 2018 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/57929 57929-14375313@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 30, 2018 2:00pm
Location: Haven Hall
Organized By: Department of English Language and Literature

Please join the Disability Studies and Transnational Comics Studies RIWs for our upcoming discussion of English PhD candidate Crystal Yin Lie's chapter: "Drawn to History: Dementia, Temporality and Graphic Life Narrative."

Abstract: How do the formal qualities of graphic memoirs about dementia contribute to disability studies critiques of able-bodied temporalities; grapple with broader questions about representing trauma, history, and identity; and innovate as well as challenge what we think of as “comics”? Because comics stage time as space, examining graphic temporalities help expand our view of how dementia affects one’s orientation to normative constructions of time.

Both Dana Walrath’s Aliceheimer’s: Alzheimer’s Through the Looking Glass (2016) and Stuart Campbell’s webcomic These Memories Won’t Last (2015) exploit the affordances of graphic narrative’s multimodal ability to visually layer stories and disrupt time, enabling the examination and reframing of cultural fears and stigmas surrounding aging and memory impairment. They each explore a family member’s experience with dementia as one that requires the recognition of alternate realities and a more flexible approach to expectations placed on their sense of past, present, and future. The stakes of visualizing dementia’s reorientations to time and history take on particular significance in these works as Aliceheimer’s and These Memories also navigate the telling of stories regarding the Armenian Genocide and World War II, respectively. For Walrath and Campbell, putting dementia into graphic form is a heuristic for processing and making accessible histories of trauma, furthering possibilities of artistic expression, and crafting spaces for healing.

To RSVP and request a copy of Crystal's paper please email Elise Nagy (ecnagy@umich.edu)
