Location: Lane Hall
Organized By: CEW+

The Hummingbird Global Writers’ Circle is an international reading series started by Dr. Debotri Dhar, CEW Visiting Scholar (2015-17) and Lecturer in Women’s Studies at the University of Michigan. The aim of this literary initiative is to bring writers and communities together in different parts of the world to foster a love of books, to discuss the craft of writing, and to promote creative dialogue and global understanding in small ways. The name was inspired by the tiny hummingbird which builds its home with just a few drops of nectar, a root here, a leaf there, and a little bit of sky.

The Circle's themed readings by established and emerging writers are free and open to the community. The theme for the first event of the Circle is feminism/ gender, to be held on Monday August 21 (3-5 pm) at the Institute for Research on Women and Gender, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

The writer-speakers for this session are Linda Gregerson, Laura Hulthen Thomas, Mike Ferro and Debotri Dhar (writer bios below), who will read from their poetry and fiction, followed by conversation /Q&A.

Light refreshments will be served. All members of the community are welcome to attend, however, RSVP is required. If you wish to hear our speakers read from their work, share tips, and engage in conversation, please RSVP to debotri@umich.edu.

The Complete Poetry of Aimé Césaire gathers all of Cesaire’s celebrated verse into one bilingual edition. The French portion is comprised of newly established first editions of Césaire’s poetic œuvre made available in French in 2014 under the title Poésie, Théâtre, Essais et Discours, edited by A. J. Arnold and an international team of specialists. To prepare the English translations, the translators started afresh from this French edition. Included here are translations of first editions of the poet’s early work, prior to political interventions in the texts after 1955, revealing a new understanding of Cesaire’s aesthetic and political trajectory. A truly comprehensive picture of Cesaire’s poetry and poetics is made possible thanks to a thorough set of notes covering variants, historical and cultural references, and recurring figures and structures, a scholarly introduction and a glossary. This book provides a new cornerstone for readers and scholars in 20th century poetry, African diasporic literature, and postcolonial studies.

Clayton Eshleman is the author of over one hundred books, and the major American translator of Césaire

Keith Taylor teaches at the University of Michigan. He has published many books over the years: collections of poetry, a collection of very short stories, co-edited volumes of essays and fiction, and a volume of poetry translated from Modern Greek.

This group meets weekly from September to June. There are no specific assignments. Each writer finds his/her own subject and voice. We read our work aloud and discuss it, making constructive suggestions for improvement. The important thing is to write well enough to interest others and convey our ideas clearly. Some people work on extended manuscripts, while others write shorter pieces. Participants may plan to publish their work, just share it with family and friends, or keep it strictly private.

Instructor Eleanor Linn, a published author, will lead this study group for those 50 and above for two hours on Thursdays from September 14, 2017 through June 14, 2018 (except Thanksgiving and December 28, 2017).

In 1922, philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein declared that “the limits of my language mean the limits of my world." With the globally-connected community at the University of Michigan in mind, we invite you to an exploration of the cross-cultural academic expressive production that accompanies thinking and writing from a non-English background. Taking the University of Michigan as a case study, we hope to engage questions of scholarship and public expression incubated in the globalized environment that is the contemporary American university. Rather than focusing on the mechanics of English as a Second Language or as a lingua franca, we seek a discussion around scholarly expression in a multicultural, globalized academia. How does an American academic culture of expression interact with the increasingly international body of authors on campus? And, can non-normative writing paradigms find footing in American academia? Please join us for a scholarly conversation on multilingualism and the pleasures and difficulties of translation.

Samer Ali (Near Eastern Studies)
Miranda Brown (Asian Languages & Cultures)
Ana Morcillo Pallares (Architecture)
Acrisio Pires (Linguistics)

Known for her explorations of racial identity, modernist poetics, and feminist legacies, poet VIEVEE FRANCIS received the 2017 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award for her collection Forest Primeval (Triquarterly Books/Northwestern University Press). She is also the author of Blue-Tail Fly (Wayne State University Press, 2006), and Horse in the Dark (Northwestern University Press, 2012). She is an associate professor at Dartmouth College and an associate editor for Callaloo. Of her own work, Vievee has said: “I want to know how poetry serves us collectively and as individuals in ways that meet this era, this moment; however, in order to gain that understanding contexts cannot be ignored, nor can history be set aside. It is the intent of my instruction and an inherent objective of my own poetry to upturn how we think about poetry, its lineage, and the cultural impact of received aesthetics.”

SEBASTIAN MATTHEWS is the author of the memoir In My Father’s Footsteps (W.W. Norton & Co.) as well as two collections of poetry, We Generous and Miracle Day, both published by Red Hen Press. A third collection, Beginner’s Guide to a Head-on Collision, is forthcoming from Red Hen in 2017. His poetry and prose have appeared in or on, among others, American Poetry Review, The Atlantic, The Sun, Tin House, and Virginia Quarterly Review. Matthews received his MFA in fiction at the University of Michigan. He taught for over a decade at Warren Wilson College in their undergraduate writing program, and currently serves on the board of the Vermont Studio Center and on the advisory board for Callaloo: A Journal of African Diaspora Arts & Letters. He lives with his wife and son in Asheville, North Carolina, where he is working on a novel and a collection of personal essays.

Peter Ho Davies is on the faculty of the graduate program in creative writing at the University of Michigan. His debut collection, The Ugliest House in the World, won the John Llewellyn Rhys and PEN/Macmillan awards in Britain. His second collection, Equal Love, was hailed by the New York Times Book Review for its "stories as deep and clear as myth." It was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and a New York Times Notable Book. In 2003 Davies was named among the "Best of Young British Novelists" by Granta. The Welsh Girl was his first novel and his second, The Fortunes, was published in September 2016. The son of a Welsh father and Chinese mother, Davies was raised in England and spent his summers in Wales.

Derek Palacio received his MFA in creative writing from The Ohio State University. His short story “Sugarcane” appeared in The O. Henry Prize Stories 2013, and his novella, How to Shake the Other Man, was published by Nouvella Books. He lives and teaches in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is the codirector, with Claire Vaye Watkins, of the Mojave School, and serves as a faculty member of the Institute of American Indian Arts MFA program.

About The Fortunes:
Sly, funny, intelligent, and artfully structured, The Fortunes recasts American history through the lives of Chinese Americans and reimagines the multigenerational novel through the fractures of immigrant family experience.
Inhabiting four lives—a railroad baron’s valet who unwittingly ignites an explosion in Chinese labor; Hollywood’s first Chinese movie star; a hate-crime victim whose death mobilizes the Asian American community; and a biracial writer visiting China for an adoption—this novel captures and capsizes over a century of our history, showing that even as family bonds are denied and broken, a community can survive—as much through love as blood.

About The Mortifications:
In 1980, a rural Cuban family is torn apart during the Mariel boatlift. Uxbal Encarnación—father, husband, political insurgent—refuses to leave behind the revolutionary ideals and lush tomato farms of his sun-soaked homeland. His wife, Soledad, takes young Isabel and Ulises hostage and flees with them to America, leaving behind Uxbal for the promise of a better life. But instead of settling with fellow Cuban immigrants in Miami’s familiar heat, Soledad pushes farther north into the stark, wintry landscape of Hartford, Connecticut. There, in the long shadow of their estranged patriarch, now just a distant memory, the Encarnacións begin a process of growth and transformation.

In their own way, each one both struggles and flourishes. Isabel, spiritually hungry and desperate for higher purpose, finds herself connected to the dying in uncanny ways. Ulises is bookish and awkwardly tall, like his father, whose memory haunts and shapes his thoughts. Presiding over them both is Soledad. Once consumed by her love for her husband, she begins a tempestuous new relationship with a Dutch tobacco farmer. But just as the Encarnacións begin to cultivate their strange new ways of life, Cuba calls them back. Uxbal is alive, and waiting.

OUR STORY
FOKUS increases the awareness of and access to art disciplines by providing unique ways for people of all ages to access the arts. Our primary goal is not to create the next famous artists but simply to allow individuals to understand what their creative talents are and apply this knowledge to their educational, professional and personal life. We create and expose communities to the arts through arts education, community art events, and an online magazine. This helps people understand their innate creativity and develop their talents so that they can maximize their potential for future success. The arts teach you how to create something from nothing and this innovative trait is what leads to success.

The Film
From Executive Producer Russell Simmons and Director Jason Zeldes, comes an award-winning documentary following Donté Clark, a young poet transcending the violence in his hometown by writing about his experiences. Growing up in Richmond, CA, a city haunted by a fatal turf war, Donté and the like-minded youth of the city mount an urban adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, with the hope of starting a dialogue about violence in the city. Will Richmond crush Donté’s idealism? Or will Donté end Richmond’s cycle of trauma?

Celeste Ng grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Shaker Heights, Ohio, in a family of scientists. She attended Harvard University and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan (now the Helen Zell Writers’ Program at the University of Michigan), where she won the Hopwood Award. Her fiction and essays have appeared in One Story, TriQuarterly, Bellevue Literary Review, the Kenyon Review Online, and elsewhere, and she is the recipient of the Pushcart Prize. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with her husband and son.

Celeste will be in conversation with Douglas Trevor, Director of the Helen Zell Writers' Program at the University of Michigan

About Little Fires Everywhere:
In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is meticulously planned—from the layout of the winding roads, to the colors of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principal is playing by the rules.

Enter Mia Warren- an enigmatic artist and single mother- who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenaged daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than tenants: all four Richardson children are drawn to the alluring mother-daughter pair. But Mia carries with her a mysterious past, and a disregard for the rules that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community.

When the Richardsons’ friends attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the town and puts Mia and Mrs. Richardson on opposing sides. Suspicious of Mia and her motives, Mrs. Richardson becomes determined to uncover the secrets in Mia’s past. But her obsession will come at unexpected and devastating costs to her own family—and Mia’s.

Little Fires Everywhere explores the weight of long-held secrets and the ferocious pull of motherhood—and the danger of believing that planning and following the rules can avert disaster, or heartbreak.

Advances in prenatal screening and genetic manipulation have the potential to all but eliminate birth defects and genetic disorders. For example, prenatal genetic testing in Iceland has almost completely erased incidents of down’s syndrome in newborns. This has led to growing concerns over creating designer babies, hyperbole about the potential for a new era of eugenics, and broader questions about whether science is outstripping societal or ethical norms in regards to human genetic diversity.

Join Joselin Linder, author of “The Family Gene”, and Jodyn Platt, assistant professor in the U-M Medical School in a panel discussion about the ethical, legal, and social implications of genetics and newborn screening. The conversation will be moderated by Kayte Spector-Bagdady, assistant professor in the U-M Medical School and chief of the research ethics service in the Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine.

Increasingly, hiring committees are interested in how prospective faculty job candidates will contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion. As a result, many academic employers have begun to request a "diversity statement" as part of the faculty job application process. In this interactive session, we will discuss best practices for writing diversity statements, examine sample statements, and work through activities designed to help participants start writing their own statement.

Jeffrey Eugenides w/Claire Vaye Watkins (October 8, 2017 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/43578 43578-9821446@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, October 8, 2017 7:00pm

Organized By: University of Michigan Helen Zell Writers' Program

Literati is thrilled to welcome Jeffrey Eugenides to Ann Arbor in support of the Pulitzer Prize winning author's first short story collection, Fresh Complaint. Following the reading, Jeffrey will be joined by Guggenheim award winning author and Helen Zell Writers' Program faculty member Claire Vaye Watkins. A Q&A and signing will follow.

Jeffrey Eugenides's bestselling novels have shown him to be an astute observer of the crises of adolescence, self-discovery, family love, and what it means to be American in our times. The stories in Fresh Complaint explore equally rich--and intriguing--territory. Ranging from the bitingly reproductive antics of "Baster" to the dreamy, moving account of a young travelers search for enlightenment in "Air Mail" (selected by Annie Proulx for Best American Short Stories), this collection presents characters in the midst of personal and national emergencies. We meet a failed poet who, envious of other peoples wealth during the real-estate bubble, becomes an embezzler; a clavichordist whose dreams of art founder under the obligations of marriage and fatherhood; and, in "Fresh Complaint," a high school student whose wish to escape the strictures of her immigrant family lead her to a drastic decision that upends the life of a middle-aged British physicist. Narratively compelling, beautifully written, and packed with a density of ideas despite their fluid grace, these stories chart the development and maturation of a major American writer.

About Unlikely Designs
A collection intent on worrying the boundaries between natural and unnatural, human and not, Unlikely Designs draws far-ranging source material from the back channels of knowledge-making: the talk pages of Wikipedia, the personal writings of Charles Darwin, the love advice doled out by chatbots, and the eclectic inclusions on the Golden Record time capsule. It is here we discover the allure of the index, what pleasure there is in bending it to our own devices. At the same time, these poems also remind us that logic is often reckless, held together by nothing more than syntactical short circuits—well, I mean, sorry, yes—prone to cracking under closer scrutiny. Returning us again and again to these gaps, Katie Willingham reveals how any act of preservation is inevitably an act of curation, an outcry against the arbitrary, by attempting to make what is precious also what survives.

Praise for “The Book of Wonders”

“The stories in this masterly collection are peopled with characters who are made to confront their frustrated ambitions, their existential misgivings, and their physical and moral shortcomings in deftly controlled narratives which are, by turns, darkly humorous, teasingly satirical and wickedly erudite. Extraordinary in their range of subject matter, from riffs on Greek mythology to bang up to the minute dystopias, these stories leave the reader with much to ponder and admire.”

Colm Tóibín, author of House of Names

“The Book of Wonders is aptly titled. These are richly inventive and deftly executed stories that brim with life—unpredictable, lyric, energetic, ‘storytelling’ at its finest. Doug Trevor is intrigued by the vicissitudes of ‘character’ and his stories touch upon moral, intellectual, spiritual issues that engage us all.”

Joyce Carol Oates

This study group uses essays, poems and memoir excerpts about aging written by women as prompts for reflective writing.

Following a discussion, members write during class and voluntarily share their writing with the group. Sample prompts might include: write about a fear you have about growing older; describe a strength or positive attribute that has emerged in you as you’ve grown older. This is not a creative writing class, but an opportunity to reflect more deeply about what aging means to us as women.

Instructor Beth Spencer is a geriatric social worker, avid reader and writer with decades of teaching experience and will lead this study group for those 50 and above for two hours on Thursdays from October 19 through November 16.

How should the press adapt when those in power use the epithet “fake news” to attack real reporting? Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, David Fahrenthold of The Washington Post, offers suggestions for both reporters and news consumers on navigating this new era. He will discuss how journalists can open up their own reporting process through social media, show the public the work that underlies their stories and invite readers in as collaborators.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Fahrenthold used social media to follow-up on Donald Trump’s pledge to donate money to veterans groups. Posting his reporter’s notes on Twitter to solicit leads, Fahrenthold uncovered Trump’s questionable charitable practices and found no evidence that Trump donated money to veterans groups as he’d claimed. Fahrenthold was also the first reporter to reveal the existence of the “Access Hollywood” 2005 video in which Trump bragged about groping women. For his series of stories, Fahrenthold won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for national reporting.

A graduate of Harvard, Fahrenthold has been at The Washington Post since 2000. There he reports on President Trump’s businesses and conflicts of interest. He previously covered the Washington, D.C., police, the environment, New England, Congress and the federal bureaucracy for the paper.

Monica Youn & Joyce Carol Oates (October 26, 2017 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/42901 42901-9675078@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 26, 2017 5:30pm

Monica Youn is the author of three books of poetry: Blackacre (Graywolf Press, 2016); Barter(Graywolf Press, 2003); and Ignatz (Four Way Books, 2010), which was a finalist for the National Book Award. Her poems have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, including the New Yorker, the Paris Review, and the New York Times Magazine, and she has been awarded fellowships from the Library of Congress and Stanford University, among other awards. A former attorney, she now teaches poetry at Princeton University and at the Warren Wilson College MFA Program for Writers. She previously taught at Bennington College, Columbia University, and at the Sarah Lawrence College MFA Program. Youn’s poetry has been described as “interested in the intersection between the beauty we want in life, and the darkness that often serves as an invisible barrier for it,” with her background in law allowing her to “probe and navigate these gray areas gently, using an economy of language that both cuts to the heart of the matter and reveals nuanced layers of caution, lust, and desperation.”

One of the most prolific American writers of the 20th century, Joyce Carol Oates counts historical biographies, depictions of working class families, and magical realist Gothic fiction among her oeuvre. She often depicts hardships and violence in American towns, and has received both critical and popular acclaim in her 50-year career. Oates is the author of over 70 books, including the novels them (1969), winner of the National Book Award; Bellefleur (1980); You Must Remember This (1987); Because It Is Bitter, and Because It Is My Heart (1990); We Were the Mulvaneys (1996); Blonde (2000), winner of the National Book Award; The Gravedigger’s Daughter (2007); and The Accursed (2013). Her short stories and essays have appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, The Atlantic, and Harper’s, and have been widely anthologized. In an interview for the Paris Review, she says: “I try to write books that can be read in one way by a literal-minded reader, and in quite another way by a reader alert to symbolic abbreviation and parodistic elements. And yet, it's the same book—or nearly. A trompe l'oeil, a work of ‘as if.’”

This week's reading features Michelle Cheever and Colin Walker.

Michelle Cheever is a writer from Boston, Massachusetts. Her writing has appeared in The Huffington Post, The Advocate, PANK, The Austin Review, and Armchair/Shotgun, among others. She has a collection of stories with Wilde Press out of Emerson College.

Colin Walker is not a renaissance man; he's a renaissance, man. He is originally from the Pacific Northwest, and, coincidentally, a poet.

Since the publication of his first volume of verse, Turtle, Swan, in 1987, MARK DOTY has been recognized as one of the most accomplished poets in America. Hailed for his elegant, intelligent verse, Doty has often been compared to James Merrill, Walt Whitman and C.P. Cavafy. His syntactically complex and aesthetically profound free verse poems, odes to urban gay life, and quietly brutal elegies to his lover, Wally Roberts, have been hailed as some of the most original and arresting poetry written today. The recipient of numerous grants and fellowships, Doty has also won a number of prestigious literary awards, including the Whiting Writer’s Award, the T. S. Eliot Prize, the National Poetry Series, the Los Angeles Times Book Award, the National Book Critics’ Circle Award, the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for first nonfiction, and the National Book Award for Fire to Fire: New and Selected Poems (2008). A long-time resident of Provincetown, Massachusetts, Doty teaches at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Described by John Updike as an “ambitious, resourceful novelist,” FERNANDA EBERSTADT is the author of Low Tide, Isaac and His devils, When the Sons of Heaven Meet the Daughters of the Earth, The Furies, and Rat. The New York Times Book Review praised Rat as “shrewd and sensuous,” hailing “Eberstadt's preoccupation with "the footloose life of the wilfully dispossessed" and writes that "in her novels, idealists and fast trackers wrestle with thorny problems of love and social identity." In 1998, Eberstadt went to live on a vineyard in the French Pyrenees, outside the city of Perpignan. She became friends with a family of French gypsy musicians. Her first work of non-fiction, Little Money Street—In Search of Gypsies and Their Music in the South of France, which portrays that friendship, was released by Knopf in March 2006. Eberstadt also writes extensively for The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Vogue, and Vanity Fair.
