Location: Chemistry Dow Lab
Organized By: LSA Honors Program

When the native language becomes unstable, and writers are forced to abandon it, or when experience simply destroys the transaction of meaning or truth between a writer and her language, the notion of the “place of writing” itself becomes destabilized and abstracted. This lecture probes the poet's relationship with an adopted language, acknowledging losses and gains, and offers a glimpse into the experience of writing in-between languages, hovering at the borders between them.

Writing is an emotional process and it works when it makes us feel, both as writers and readers. Yet a certain emotional distance is necessary when one writes poetry with the language of oppression, especially when one has been the victim, and offers a historical testimony. What kind of liberties can one take with the material? What constitutes appropriate artistic utterance when one navigate the territories of poetry about the hard truths? Rescuing words from screams of pain and anger into poetic expression, which shows the effect of oppression on the inner landscape of feeling, is what poetry offers as an art.

Location: Art and Architecture Building
Organized By: Graduate Rackham International

Have you ever wondered how architecture sounds in Chinese? Or questioned if the language of architecture would sound any more esoteric if it were in Chinese? Does linguistic difference matter? What is lost and what is gained when designspeak traverses the Chinese-English divide? How does the medium of design discourse affect its content? Is graphic communication the great equalizer? Is architecture sinicizable? Do you doubt that these are answerable questions? Find out on October 3rd, 5–7pm, at the Taubman College Commons.

In 1922, philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein declared that “the limits of my language mean the limits of my world." With the globally-connected community at the University of Michigan in mind, we invite you to an exploration of the cross-cultural academic expressive production that accompanies thinking and writing from a non-English background. Taking the University of Michigan as a case study, we hope to engage questions of scholarship and public expression incubated in the globalized environment that is the contemporary American university. Rather than focusing on the mechanics of English as a Second Language or as a lingua franca, we seek a discussion around scholarly expression in a multicultural, globalized academia.

Panelists:
FU Liangyu, Communications & Media Studies
WANG Jieqiong, Architecture & Urban Studies
William THOMSON, Anthropology & Architecture
ZHANG Fang, Fine Arts, Design, & Economics

Hors d'oeuvres to be served.
All are welcome!
No registration is required but please RSVP so we can provide enough food for everyone.

Brian Holton will speak about his own odyssey in translation, from the Latin and Greek proses of his schooldays, to the near-impossibility of earning a living through literary translation. He will propose the following questions: When we read a poem in translation, whose voice do we hear? Do translators think other people’s thoughts? Is translation useful for an apprentice writer? He will stress the importance of praxis in generating theory, and briefly discuss his own practice as a Chinese-Scots translator. Lastly, he will explore the tools which make a poem sing in its new habitat.

Brian Holton was born in Scotland and educated at Edinburgh and Durham. Holton taught classical and modern Chinese language and literature in the UK, and Chinese-English translation in Hong Kong. He has translated a dozen books of poetry by Yang Lian and has appeared at major literary festivals in the UK, Europe and the Far East. He has published a wide range of Chinese poetry and fiction in Scots and English.

Organized By: Residential College

Doin’ Time: Through the Visiting Glass examines the impact of incarceration on families. Ashley Lucas, the child of an incarcerated father, conducted interviews in California, Texas, and New York with prisoners’ family members, former prisoners, and people who do work connected to prisons. She also corresponded with over 400 prisoners from across the U.S. Weaving together these interviews and letters with her personal experience as a prisoner’s child and creative writing, Lucas wrote a one-person play which she performs herself. Doin’ Time uses monologues to take the audience through a variety of perspectives on the families of the incarcerated. Since 2004, Lucas has performed Doin’ Time both inside and outside prisons throughout the U.S. and in Ireland, Canada, and Brazil. The play runs one hour and fifteen minutes and is always followed by an audience discussion.

RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. THE EVENT IS SOLD OUT, but if you did not get a reservation, you may come to the event and get on the waiting list in case a spot opens up.

The 2018 CMENAS Colloquium Series theme, “The Process of Discovery: How Scholars Write Books Today” will discuss how in popular media, writing is fantastically presented as a process whereby inspiration—a muse— comes to the writer (or fails to). In this fantasy, writers type fiendishly or crumple up one sheet after another. The reality is at once more complicated and humble than this. Come discover how scholars discover. The colloquium series will feature presentations from CMENAS faculty on their recent book projects and will explore the research process from start to finish.

Lecture Abstract:
After defining the five major components of religion (discourses/teachings, practices, communities institutions, and leaders), Professor Knysh will examine the applicability and suitability of this analytic rubrication for the academic study of Islam. He will then address various past and present conceptualizations of Islam and the principal methodological frameworks used by Western scholars and scholars of Muslim background trained in the West to represent Islam and Muslims to various audiences. Professor Knysh emphasizes the critical importance of who, when and where interprets and articulates the malleable and multi-faceted abstract/construct called “Islam.” He also addresses the impact of new information technologies and cyberspace on the meta-discourses about Islam, while revisiting the abiding relevance of Marxian and Weberian theories of religion generally and Islam in particular.

Speaker Bio:
Alexander Knysh is Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Michigan and Principal Investigator of a research project on political Islam/Islamism sponsored by the Rectorate of the St. Petersburg State University, Russia. His academic interests include Islamic mysticism (Sufism), Qur’anic studies, the history of Muslim theological, philosophical and juridical thought, and modern Islamic/Islamist movements in comparative perspective. He has numerous academic and instructional publications on these subjects, including twelve books. Since 2006, he has served as section editor for “Sufism” on the Editorial Board of the Encyclopedia of Islam, Third Edition (E.J. Brill, Leiden and Boston). He is also Executive Editor of the Encyclopedia of Islamic Mysticism and the Handbooks of Islamic Mysticism book series associated with it (E.J. Brill, Leiden and Boston). Professor Knysh serves on the editorial boards of the following academic journals: Al-Abhath (Beirut), Vestnik Sankt Peterburgskogo Universiteta (Saint Petersburg), Al-Farabi (Almaty), Islamovedenie (Makhachkala, Russian Federation), Islam v sovremennom mire (Moscow), and Journal of Sufi Studies (Leiden and Boston).

Essayist and fiction writer Dubravka Ugrešić will take a light tone while talking about the "invisible people" of Europe: the migrations that nobody takes into account when talking about the contemporary “migration crisis” and the people with proper papers migrating within the European Union. In another words, Ugrešić will try to explain what Bulgarians, for instance, are doing in the Netherlands and what the Dutch are doing in Bulgaria.

Dubravka Ugrešić is one of Europe’s most distinctive novelists and essayists. From her early postmodernist excursions, to her elegiac reckonings in fiction and essay with the disintegration of her Yugoslav homeland and the fall of the Berlin Wall, to her more recent writings on popular and literary culture, Ugrešić’s work is marked by a combination of irony, polemic, and compassion. Following degrees in Comparative and Russian Literature, Ugrešić worked for many years at the University of Zagreb’s Institute for Theory of Literature. When war broke out in Yugoslavia in 1991, Ugrešić took a firm anti-war stance, critically dissecting retrograde Croatian and Serbian nationalism. Subjected to prolonged media harassment, she left Croatia in 1993. Her books have been translated into over twenty languages. She is the winner of several major literary prizes, including the Austrian State Prize for European Literature 1998; the Jean Améry Essay Prize for her essayistic work as a whole, 2012; and the Vilenica Prize and Neustadt International Prize for Literature, 2016.

Appropriation can feel like the "third rail" of our current cultural discourse. In this talk I'll try to offer some reflections on the topic drawn from my own experiences as a fiction writer and teacher of creative writing in the hope of furthering and complicating our conversations about this important issue.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

This October, the Institute for the Humanities is shutting down Liberty Street near U-M campus. We’re going to reuse thousands of discarded books, turning them into an illuminated pathway for “Literature vs. Traffic,” a large-scale art installation by Spanish undercover art collective Luzinterruptus.

Ann Arbor joins Toronto, New York, and Melbourne, as we feature--for one night only--the brilliance of 10,000 books and thousands of LED lights. What was just a street will become a beautiful installation, as we bring the power of art, education, the written word, and free thought to the entire Ann Arbor community by essentially “paving” Liberty St. with thousands of glowing books.

This is a grass-roots project and your participation is essential!

Want to play a part in this amazing campus and community-wide project? We need:

Volunteers: Community and campus groups and individuals to volunteer to work with the artists to prep & attach lights to books (Oct 15-23). Sign up to volunteer here: http://myumi.ch/6jW5V

Visitors: Come view the extraordinary installation, and help us extend the life of a book by taking some books home (Oct. 23 5-11pm, books can be taken home after 8pm).

Please join the Modernist Studies Workshop for a dissertation chapter workshop with Amanda Greene (English Language and Literature) on "Sousveillant Storytelling: The Situated Sense-Making of Mass Observation’s 'Subjective Cameras.'"

Chapter abstract: Through readings of the British Mass-Observation Movement's publications, practices, and films between 1937-9, this chapter redefines sousveillance as a habit of socially situated storytelling that is rooted in visual media imaginaries as opposed to a particular apparatus. Originally coined by Steve Mann to describe his pioneering experiments with wearable computing in the 1990s, sousveillance refers to a “gaze from below” that can balance hierarchies between the population and the surveilling state. While sousveillance is usually considered dependent on particular networked digital technologies (like cell phone cameras that can capture instances of police brutality and share them on social media), Mass-Observation’s strange hybrid artistic/anthropologic media experiment decades earlier exemplifies how this practice functions in a broader range of contexts and, above all, in less technologically dependent ways. The movement's work affirms everyday visual practices as vehicles of empowered storytelling by which individuals can enter into larger political communities of dissensus, and draws on contemporary interwar visual media forms as resources to enhance this vision. However, the movement's initiatives aimed to teach the population to actively, interpretively participate in their environment not by distributing devices, but by embracing the affective and socially situated distortions of their own “subjective cameras.” While this idealization of distorted narratives may seem dangerous in our current political landscape of "fake news," sousveillance brings individuals’ distortions into view not to create alternate realities but to recognize what Donna Haraway calls “situated knowledge” as the ethical center of individuals’ political agency within larger collectives.

Please email Aaron Stone (stoneaa@umich.edu) to RSVP and receive a copy of Amanda's chapter draft.

Bayan Founas is an educator and youth mentor in Detroit. She graduated from the university of Michigan in 2014 with a Women's Studies degree and will receive her Master's Degree in Educational Leadership and Policy from the University of Michigan in 2019. Passionate about making educational reforms in predominately poor communities of color, she created an art & poetry club for Detroit youth to creatively heal. Founas enjoys writing, reading, and performing spoken-word poetry.

In her first book, Founas outlines her life experiences and views through poetry. As the daughter of Algerian immigrants, she depicts the realities of growing up in America in the diaspora – leaving her between two foreign lands. She also provides a unique glimpse into the glories and traumas of educating black and brown youth in Detroit. This body of work is HER story as a first-generation Arab and Muslim woman growing up in America – a narrative that is rarely told from one’s own perspective.

"Jane Miller’s eleventh book, Who Is Trixie the Trasher? and Other Questions, is a hyper-political and brassy collection of poems that questions authority, sexism, ageism, and romance in the face of mortality. Differing from her earlier poems in their range and urgency, this collection retains Miller’s signature lyric voice, personal yet thrilling in its associative leaps. Her intimate language illuminates and soothes our current trauma―especially as experienced by women―where nightmarish reality must answer to human dignity."

Jane Miller will read from her newest book, speak about contemporary poetry, and answer questions.

Coffee and tea will be served.

Location: East Quadrangle
Organized By: Residential College

In Black Opera: History, Power, Engagement (published May 4, 2018), Naomi André draws on the experiences of performers and audiences to explore this music's resonance with today's listeners. Interacting with creators and performers, as well as with the works themselves, André reveals how black opera unearths suppressed truths. These truths provoke complex, if uncomfortable, reconsideration of racial, gender, sexual, and other oppressive ideologies. Opera, in turn, operates as a cultural and political force that employs an immense, transformative power to represent or even liberate.

In Dance Me a Song: Astaire, Balanchine, Kelly, and the American Film Musical (published June 27, 2018), Beth Genné traces Astaire's, Balanchine's, and Kelly's collaborations with composers and film-makers, crossing stylistic and class boundaries to develop a truly modern dance style and genres for the film musical. She contextualizes their work within the history of dance, music, and film and its roots in the diverse dance and music cultures of jazz age America's nation of immigrants. She demonstrates how concepts and visual-musical devices derived from dance-making would give entire films, both musical and non-musical, the rhythmic flow and feeling of dance.

Naomi André is Associate Professor in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies, Women’s Studies, and the Associate Director for Faculty at the Residential College at the University of Michigan. Her earlier books, Voicing Gender: Castrati, Travesti, and the Second Woman in Early Nineteenth-Century Italian Opera (2006) and Blackness in Opera (2012, co-edited collection) focus on opera from the nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries and explore constructions of gender, race and identity.

Beth Genné is Professor of Dance History and Art History in the Dance Department and the Arts and Ideas concentration of the Residential College. She has written numerous book chapters on British ballet and dance in film (including Gene Kelly and Vincente Minnelli) and articles in such journals as Dance Research, Dance Chronicle, and Art Journal. Her first book, The Making of a Choreographer, was on the early training and choreographic development of Ninette de Valois, founder of the Royal Ballet.

Reading of “canned meat” (“dosenfleisch”) (November 27, 2018 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/57534 57534-14209038@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, November 27, 2018 5:00pm
Location: Modern Languages Building
Organized By: Germanic Languages & Literatures

Reading by playwright in German
English translation by Neil Blackadder
Performed by students and faculty of the School of Music, Theatre, & Dance: Kris Danford, Liam Loomer, Sarah Prendergast, Malcolm Tulip

"And so now here we are lying on this rest area like a whale, a stranded whale. The flesh starts to rot when we can’t keep driving. As long as you’re moving, you don’t decay."

A truck driver has to stop at a motorway service area due to a disastrous accident. Frustrated by the forced standstill, he watches the nightly events. An insurance inspector, obsessed with any traffic accidents, investigates the so-called death curve at the service area. But there is as well Beate, the operator of the rest stop, who shares a dark secret with Jayne, an auto-aggressive television actress addicted to high-speed.

Ferdinand Schmalz’s ‘canned meat’ is a metaphor for the paradox of mobility in times of neoliberalism. One can get everywhere, but never to one self – thus, the only possibility left to achieve authenticity is the life-threatening collision.

Ferdinand Schmalz is an Austrian author and playwright. His works include “am beispiel der butter,” “dosenfleisch,” “herzerlfresser,” and “jedermann (stirbt).” His plays are staged at the leading theatres in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, e.g. Deutsches Theater, Burgtheater Wien, Schauspiel Leipzig, Schauspielhaus Zürich. He won several awards for his writing, beyond others the Retzhofer Dramapreis (2013), the Ingeborg Bachmann Preis (2017), and the Ludwig-Mülheims-Theaterpreis (2018). For “dosenfleisch” he was nominated for the most prestigious drama award in the German-speaking countries, the Mülheimer Dramatikerpreis. Furthermore, “dosenfleisch” was invited to the Autorentheatertage in Berlin.

The reading is sponsored by the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures. These events are free and open to the public. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to participate, please contact 734-764-8018 or germandept@umich.edu at least one week in advance.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Sweetland Center for Writing

Sweetland Center for Writing's Writer to Writer series lets you hear directly from University of Michigan professors about their challenges, processes, and expectations as writers and also as readers of student writing. Each semester, Writer to Writer pairs one esteemed University professor with a Sweetland faculty member for a conversation about writing.

This month Writer to Writer welcomes Heather Ann Thompson. Dr. Heather Ann Thompson is a historian at the University of Michigan in the Department of Afro-American and African Studies, the Department of History, and the Residential College. She is the Pulitzer Prize and Bancroft Prize-winning author of Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and its Legacy (2016). Blood in the Water received six additional book awards and landed on over 20 best of 2016 book lists including that of the New York Times.

Thompson is also a public intellectual who writes regularly on the history of policing, mass incarceration and the current criminal justice system for The New York Times, Newsweek, Time, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, and many other national publications.

This year, Thompson was awarded a Bearing Witness Writing Fellowship from the Art for Justice fund of the Ford Foundation. Her next book is on the MOVE bombing of 1985.

Writer to Writer takes place at the Literati bookstore (124 E. Washington) on Tuesday, November 27th from 7-8pm and is also broadcast live on WCBN radio (88.3FM). These conversations offer students a rare glimpse into the writing that professors do outside the classroom. You can hear instructors from various disciplines describe how they handle the same challenges student writers face, from finding a thesis to managing deadlines. Professors will also discuss what they want from student writers in their courses, and will take questions put forth by students and by other members of the University community. If there's anything you've ever wanted to ask a professor about writing, Writer to Writer gives you the chance.

For the Record (December 6, 2018 7:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/54263 54263-13563504@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, December 6, 2018 7:30pm
Location: Duderstadt Center
Organized By: Runyonland Productions

For the Record is an original work written by Broadway performer and University of Michigan faculty member Geoff Packard. Runyonland Productions has been workshopping the show with the playwright, and this production will be the piece’s world premiere. Taking place in the Duderstadt Video Studio, For the Record explores the world of a young man trying to escape the history of his family, haunted by the genetic disposition of Huntington’s disease. He learns no matter how hard you try, you can’t escape what’s written in your DNA.

Geoff is delighted to be debuting the production in Ann Arbor with Runyonland, stating,

“I believe that Thomas Laub and his Runyonland Productions, are an exciting blend of positive energy, tenacity, and grit--all things necessary when bringing new works into the world. In the theatre, we ought to have a nurturing environment for the often-painful process of creating new works. I am optimistic that both the immense talent of its artists, and the intelligence of its audiences, will make Ann Arbor a nurturing environment for artistic achievement and a great incubator for new work.”

When writers publish their diaries years after writing them, they often append a preface or afterword, a layer of retrospective reflection that complicates the already unique temporality of the diary’s ever-shifting present. The focus of this talk is on the self-encounters that take place in diaristic paratexts from non-Jewish Germans who wrote diaries during the Second World War. The diary’s paratexts highlight the discontinuous nature of the self, the various ways individuals position themselves as Zeitzeugen, and the diary’s function as a space for writerly self-construction in the context of German Aufarbeitung der Vergangenheit.

In this hands-on writing workshop, the instructions are simple: keep your hand moving, dig deep, give yourself permission to write badly, tell the truth. You’ll get vivid prompts to get hands moving, and we’ll write in quick bursts. When we’ve finished, we’ll share what we wrote.

For experienced writers and novices alike, this practice is a powerful tool for cutting through the noise and discovering or re-discovering your authentic voice.

This study group for those 50 and over will meet for two hours on Tuesdays from January 22 and February 5, 12 and 26.

Instructor Tanya Shaffer is an award-winning playwright and author of the travel memoir Somebody’s Heart is Burning: A Woman Wanderer in Africa. Her stories and essays have appeared on Salon.com and in numerous anthologies.

Penny Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series: Juliana Huxtable: POST (February 7, 2019 5:10pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/58544 58544-14510866@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, February 7, 2019 5:10pm
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

The iconic Juliana Huxtable is an American artist, writer, performer, and musician. Exploring the intersections of race, gender, queerness, technology and identity, Huxtable uses a diverse set of means to engage these issues, including self-portraiture, text-based prints, performance, nightlife, music, writing, and social media. Huxtable does not privilege any method over another, and the lines between different forms of her work are often fluid. This approach aids Huxtable in her ongoing critiques of existing social norms and categorical distinctions while indicating alternate, more hopeful possibilities. Huxtable references her own body and history as a transgender African American woman as she challenges the socio-political and cultural forces that inform normative conceptions of gender and sexuality. Huxtable’s Art and Performance work has been featured at Roskilde Festival, Denmark (2018), ReWire Festival, Netherlands (2018), Park Avenue Armory, New York (2018), Reena Spauldings, Solo show, New York (2017), Project Native Informant, London UK, (2017) MoMA PS1, New York (2014); “Take Ecstasy with Me,” Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2014); Frieze Projects, London (2014); and 2015 Triennial: Surround Audience, New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York (2015); among other venues. She lives and works in New York, where she is the founder and DJ for Shock Value. And part of House of Ladosha a nightlife collective run by artists, DJs, writers, and fashion icons.

Huxtable’s work is included in Art in the Age of the Internet, 1989 to Today on view at the University of Michigan Museum of Art from December 15, 2018 to April 7, 2019. Organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, the exhibition examines the radical impact of internet culture on visual art since the invention of the web in 1989. This exhibition presents more than forty works across a variety of media—painting, performance, photography, sculpture, video, and web-based projects. It features work by some of the most important artists working today, including Judith Barry, Juliana Huxtable, Pierre Huyghe, Josh Kline, Laura Owens, Trevor Paglen, Seth Price, Cindy Sherman, Frances Stark, and Martine Syms.

Major funding for Ms. Huxtable's residency was provided by The Faculty Alliance for Diversity at the University of Michigan School of Social Work.

Michigan Social Work gratefully acknowledges for their support, the Penny Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series, the University of Michigan Museum of Art, The Institute for Research on Woman and Gender, and The Spectrum Center.

Messianic Minimalism: Anecdotes of the Coming World (Benjamin, Bloch, Blumenberg) (February 15, 2019 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/60669 60669-14937151@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 15, 2019 2:00pm
Location: Modern Languages Building
Organized By: Germanic Languages & Literatures

Hans Blumenberg's 1988 book The Saint Matthew Passion, while ostensibly concerned with the possible, secular reception of Bach’s masterpiece, pursues a series of 'theological lines of flight' via anecdotes, insights, and apercus generated by often heterodox theological debates and their literary receptions. One such line of flight is the retraction of the passion itself in Gersholm Scholem’s anecdote about the advent of the messiah in which almost nothing changes, as retold by Benjamin, Bloch, and now Blumenberg. Here Blumenberg returns to his earlier concerns with Gnosticism (Legitmacy, 1966) and considers a different answer to what has gone so wrong with creation that it needs to be destroyed.

Paul Fleming is Professor of Comparative Literature and German Studies as well as the Taylor Family Director of the Society for the Humanities. He has published monographs on Exemplarity and Mediocrity: The Art of the Average from Bourgeois Tragedy to Realism (2009) and The Pleasures of Abandonment: Jean Paul and the Life of Humor (2006) along with edited volumes on Hans Blumenberg, Siegfried Kracauer, the scholars around Stefan George, and Ulrich Peltzer. He is currently co-translating Blumenberg’s The Saint Matthew Passion for Cornell Press as well as completing a book-length project that examines the use of the anecdote in and as theory with respect to questions of exemplarity, evidence, history, and rhetoric.

The Sweetland Minor in Writing is designed for undergraduate students who are interested in developing their disciplinary and professional writing abilities while pursuing their majors. It gives you the freedom to write about what matters to you while helping you develop as a writer and thinker.

Students currently in the Minor program come from all over the university bringing a wealth of diverse interests to the classroom. You might find a screenwriter sitting between a scientist and a musician or Kinesiology, Business, and Communications majors giving each other feedback on their writing.

With a Sweetland Minor in Writing you will earn a credential that certifies your writing expertise to prospective employers and graduate programs. You will also pick up new media skills designing and creating content for your electronic writing portfolios.

If you are interested in learning more about the Sweetland Minor in Writing from current students and faculty you can attend our informal Minor in Writing Information Session on Friday, February 15th from 4-5:30pm at Sweetland's Peer Writing Center in Angell Hall G219. Food and refreshments provided.

The deadline to apply for Fall 2019 is Monday, March 18th at noon.

In Conversation: Artist David Opdyke with writer Lawrence Weschler (February 22, 2019 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/59598 59598-14754551@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 22, 2019 1:00pm
Location: 202 S. Thayer
Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

2019 Efroymson Emerging Artist David Opdyke and writer Lawrence Weschler discuss Opdyke's current exhibition, Paved with Good Intentions, and the relationship between culture, politics, the environment and art in a contemporary landscape fraught with disorder and turmoil.

WIN ONE OF DAVID OPDYKE'S MICHIGAN POSTCARDS! Come to the event and you'll automatically be entered to win one of 10 vintage Michigan postcards painted on/modified by David Opdyke. Must be present to win.

About David Opdyke:
David Opdyke is a draughtsman, sculptor, and animator known for his trenchant political send-ups of American culture. Born in Schenectady, NY in 1969, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in painting and sculpture. His work is informed by the massive industrial and corporate restructuring he witnessed growing up, namely the abandonment of the city center by manufacturing giants General Electric and ALCO. As GE shifted resources to neighboring Niskayuna, the disparities became hard for Opdyke to ignore. Massive, decaying factories, an empty interstate loop, and unemployment were downtown; new streets, expensive homes, sushi and shopping malls were in the suburbs.

For twenty years Opdyke worked as a scenic painter and architectural model-maker. Ranging from intricate miniature constructions to room-sized installations, his artwork explores globalization, consumerism, and civilization’s abusive relationship with the environment.

About Lawrence Weschler:
Lawrence Weschler was for over twenty years (1981-2002) a staff writer at "The New Yorker," where his work shuttled between political tragedies and cultural comedies. He is director emeritus of the New York Institute for the Humanities at NYU, where he was director from 2001-2013. His nearly twenty books of political and cultural reportage include "Seeing is Forgetting the Name of the Thing One Sees" (on Robert Irwin); "Mr Wilson's Cabinet of Wonder" (on the Museum of Jurassic Technology); "Vermeer in Bosnia"; "Everything that Rises: A Book of Convergences"; "Domestic Scenes: The Art of Ramiro Gomez"; and forthcoming this summer, "And How Are You, Doctor Sacks," a biographical memoir of his friendship with the late neurologist Oliver Sacks. What kinds of arguments can you use a dissertation to make, and how can you frame or position those arguments? Once you've committed to an argument, how do you arrange your dissertation to best serve it? How can you think about the overall shape of what you're doing and making? The Structuring Content workshop will present graduate students an opportunity to consider these questions, learn about some of the common components of dissertations in the humanities and social sciences, and ask questions about how to scaffold and build out their dissertation topics and projects.

A literature review is a foundational component of the dissertation that provides important context for one's research and writing. It is also a challenging organizational project. In this workshop, we will explore the purpose and conventions of literature reviews in the natural sciences. The workshop will include a discussion of the genre of literature reviews, why they are important, and how they can be organized. Our ultimate goal will be to equip graduate students with both an understanding of different approaches to literature reviews as well as strategies for summarizing the literature and organizing content.

Living Poetry / Braving Joy: Naomi Long Madgett + Gabrielle Civil (March 19, 2019 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/59388 59388-14737056@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2019 1:00pm
Location: Angell Hall
Organized By: Hopwood Awards Program

Naomi Long Madgett and Gabrielle Civil will join us in the Hopwood Room for a public conversation about living a literary life: What does it mean to be a black woman / poet today? How has the role or impact of poetry changed? What’s most vital in a poet’s education? How can we rethink and reclaim publishing? How we can bridge the divides between different schools of poetry? How can we reconcile the ivory tower and the community center? What can poetry do in our communities? What good books are we reading (songs are we singing, art are we seeing)? What do we love? How can we brave joy?

About the presenters:

Mentored by poet Langston Hughes, Naomi Long Madgett moved to Detroit in 1946. In the 1960s, she joined a group of African American writers who met regularly at Boone House, including Margaret Danner, Dudley Randall and Oliver LaGrone. Madgett was named Detroit poet laureate in 2001. In her poetry, influenced by the work of Emily Dickinson, John Keats, and Langston Hughes, Madgett often engages themes of civil rights and African American spirituality. She is the author of numerous collections of poetry, including One and the Many (1956), Exits and Entrances (1978), and Octavia and Other Poems (1988, reissued and expanded in 2002). In 1972, Madgett founded Lotus Press. She edited the anthology Adam of Ifé: Black Women in Praise of Black Men (1992), and her own work was included in the anthologies The Poetry of the Negro, 1746–1949 (1949, edited by Langston Hughes) and Ten: Anthology of Detroit Poets (1968, edited by Oliver LaGrone). A selection of her papers, documenting her poetry career and the history of Lotus Press, is held by the University of Michigan’s Special Collections Library.

Gabrielle Civil is a black feminist performance artist, originally from Detroit, MI. She has premiered fifty original solo and collaborative performance works around the world. Signature themes included race, body, art, politics, grief, and desire. Since 2014, she has been performing “Say My Name” (an action for 270 abducted Nigerian girls)” as an act of embodied remembering. She is the author of Swallow the Fish and Tourist Art (with Vladimir Cybil Charlier). She currently teaches Creative Writing and Critical Studies at the California Institute of the Arts. The aim of her work is to open up space.Experiments in Joy is forthcoming from CCM Press.

Writer to Writer w/ Ellen Muehlberger (March 19, 2019 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/61259 61259-15061102@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2019 7:00pm

This month Writer to Writer welcomes Ellen Muehlberger. Ellen Muehlberger is Associate Professor of Christianity in late antiquity in the departments of Middle East Studies and History at the University of Michigan, where she teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on ancient history, contemporary religious traditions, scholarly methods, and Coptic and Syriac language. Muehlberger has held fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Council of Learned Societies. She edited Practice, a 2017 collection of newly-translated primary sources about early Christian education, asceticism, and reading for the series Cambridge Editions of Early Christian Writings, and her new book, Moment of Reckoning: Imagined Death and Its Consequences in Late Ancient Christianity (Oxford) will be available at Literati for purchase.

Writer to Writer takes place at the Literati bookstore (124 E. Washington) on Tuesday, March 19th from 7-8pm and is also broadcast live on WCBN radio (88.3FM).
