The Arts Ambassador Program is designed to increase student awareness of the arts on campus and connect students who share an interest in the arts.

Arts at Michigan is looking for enthusiastic and friendly students who have an interest in the arts that they want to share! Arts Ambassadors are unpaid volunteers who serve as the bridge between the arts and the U-M student body. As an Arts Ambassador you'll learn about the arts both on campus and in the community, meet local artists, and help promote arts events and activities.

Being a part of the Arts Ambassadors program is an extremely rewarding and fun experience! As an Arts Ambassador, you will be responsible for attending weekly (virtual) meetings, taking leadership roles in organizing arts events, collaborating with other Arts Ambassadors to engage students in the arts, and most importantly, spreading the word about the vast arts community at U-M!

Want to learn more about Arts Ambassadors? Join us for a virtual Mass Meeting on Tuesday, September 15 at 6pm.

The application deadline for Fall 2020 is September 20.

Connecting Student Creatives is an initiative to share the creative work of University of Michigan students. On Arts at Michigan's website and social media channels, we'll be highlighting some of the many students who make up our campus artistic community: visual artists, filmmakers, dancers, musicians, architects, designers, actors, poets, set designers, cartoonists and more! Check out some of the students we've featured, and follow them on their social media. Then share your own creative work with us!

CGIS Virtual Study Abroad Fair (October 8, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/77893 77893-19943564@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 8, 2020 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Global and Intercultural Study

Study abroad is not just for juniors. It's not just for language and international studies majors. It's not just for students from certain communities or socioeconomic backgrounds. No matter who you are, where you come from, or what you’re studying, a study abroad experience is available to you during your time at Michigan.

Whether you want to develop the skills you’ll need to compete in a global economy, cultivate your language competencies, or build meaningful connections with people from around the world, this is the best time in your life for a global experience.

Studying abroad often proves to be a pivotal experience, but deciding which program is the best fit can be daunting as you consider questions such as: How will this enhance my course of study? When should I go? For how long? Where? Can I afford it? How do I prepare? Will my credits transfer? The CGIS Study Abroad Virtual Fair is the best time to get all of your questions answered!

During the day of the virtual fair, you'll have instant access to academic advisors, education abroad advisors, Office of Financial Aid & LSA Scholarship Office representatives, and program representatives as well as scheduled events throughout the fair!

Kate was awarded the prestigious MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 2017, the first given in the field of landscape architecture. Raoul Wallenberg Lecture: Michael Kimmelman, The New York Times (November 16, 2020 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/78968 78968-20162602@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, November 16, 2020 6:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning

Save the date for the Fall 2020 Raoul Wallenberg Lecture featuring Michael Kimmelman of the New York Times. Kimmelman's remarks, in conversation with Dean Jonathan Massey, will be followed by a public interview with Taubman College's Agora and Dimensions publications, exploring the role of journalists in issues of racial justice, social equity, health, and climate change in the context of the built environment.

Since he returned to New York from Europe in the fall of 2011, Michael Kimmelman has been the architecture critic of The New York Times. He has reported from more than 40 countries and twice been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. His work focuses on urban affairs, public space, housing for the poor, infrastructure, social equality and the environment, as well as on design. A best-selling author, he has won numerous awards over the years. The magazine New York titled an article about him “The People’s Critic.” In March 2014, Mr. Kimmelman was given the Brendan Gill Prize for “insightful candor and continuous scrutiny of New York’s architectural environment,” “that is journalism at its finest."

From 2007 to 2011, Mr. Kimmelman was based in Berlin, covering Europe and the Middle East, having devised the “Abroad” column. While there, he reported on life under Hamas in Gaza, the crackdown on culture in Putin’s Russia, negritude in France and bullfighting in Spain, among other subjects. He was previously The Times’s longtime chief art critic — “the most acute American art critic of his generation,” according to the late Australian writer Robert Hughes.

A graduate of Yale and Harvard, adjunct professor at Columbia University and former Franke fellow at the Whitney Center for the Humanities at Yale, he has contributed regularly to The New York Review of Books.

The Raoul Wallenberg Lecture was initiated in 1971 by Sol King, a former classmate of Wallenberg's. An endowment was established in 1976 for an annual lecture to be offered in Raoul's honor on the theme of architecture as a humane social art.

feminist architecture collaborative (f-architecture) is a three-woman* architectural research enterprise aimed at disentangling the contemporary spatial politics of bodies, intimately and globally. Their projects traverse theoretical and material registers to locate new forms of architectural work through critical relationships with collaborators across continents and an expanding definition of Designer. They think, write, and design about blood, teenage dreaming, sovereignty, fakeness, and protest—among other supposedly extra-disciplinary fixations.

f-architecture is a winner of the 2019 Architectural League Prize. Como-Clinical Interiors of Beirut, their exhibition on the architectural reproduction of virginity in the Lebanese capital, opened at VI PER Gallery in Prague in 2018 and has been re-staged by the Architectural League of New York, and at the NTU Institute of Science and Technology for Humanity in Singapore, where they were shortlisted for the 2019 Global Digital Art Prize. In January 2020, they were Artists-in-Residence at The Lab at Darat al Funun in Amman, Jordan, during which time they produced the exhibition Paper Machine (آلات ورقية). Their writing and work have appeared in Harvard Design Magazine, e-flux architecture, The Funambulist, Real Review and Log, among other publications, and at institutions including Morgan Library and Museum, Studio-X Amman, Universität der Künste Berlin, FRAC Centre-Val de Loire, and UN-Habitat. f-architecture is a former member of the GSAPP Incubator @ NEW INC, the incubator initiative of the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York.

*Virginia Black, Rosana Elkhatib, and Gabrielle Printz co-founded f-architecture in 2016. They maintain their wily practice and their deep friendship in Brooklyn, New York.

The Raoul Wallenberg Lecture was initiated in 1971 by Sol King, a former classmate of Wallenberg's. An endowment was established in 1976 for an annual lecture to be offered in Raoul's honor on the theme of architecture as a humane social art.

The University of Virginia—designed by Thomas Jefferson and now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site—was built and maintained by 4,000 or more enslaved men, women, and children. UVA’s powerful new Memorial to Enslaved Laborers honors the lives, labors, and resistance of the enslaved people who lived and worked at UVA at some point between 1817 and 1865.

This interview with members of the memorial’s design team will explore the history, form, and process behind the creation of the memorial. Panelists: Mabel Wilson, Meejin Yoon, Eric Höweler, and Eto Otitigbe, with U-M's Kristin Hass as interviewer.

~   Eric Höweler, AIA, LEED AP,  is an associate professor in architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, where he teaches lecture courses and design studios with a focus on building technologies/integration. He is a co-founding principal of  Höweler + Yoon Architecture LLP, a research-driven, multidisciplinary design studio working between architecture, art, and media. HYA has a reputation for work that is technologically and formally innovative, and deeply informed by human experience, and a sensitivity to tectonics.

Eto Otitigbe is a polymedia artist whose interdisciplinary practice investigates the intersections of race, power, and technology. With history as the foundation for exploration, Otitigbe sets alternative narratives into motion; creating spaces for people to experience a unique mixture of concepts. Otitigbe lives and works in Brooklyn, NY where is an Assistant Professor and Head of Sculpture in the Art Department of Brooklyn College.

Mabel O. Wilson is the Nancy and George Rupp Professor of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, a professor in African American and African diasporic studies, director of the Institute for Research in African American Studies, and co-director of the Global Africa Lab at Columbia University. She is trained in architecture and American studies, two fields that inform her work. Through her transdisciplinary practice Studio &, Wilson makes visible and legible the ways that anti-black racism shapes the built environment along with the ways that blackness creates spaces of imagination, refusal, and desire.

J. Meejin Yoon, AIA FAAR, is an architect, designer, and educator, whose projects and research investigate the intersections between architecture, technology, and the public realm. Prior to joining the faculty at AAP, Yoon was at MIT for 17 years and served as the head of the Department of Architecture from 2014–18. Yoon is cofounding principal of Höweler and Yoon Architecture.

Kristin Hass is associate professor of American culture and faculty coordinator for the Humanities Collaboratory at the University of Michigan. She is the author of Carried to the Wall: American Memory and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (1998) and Sacrificing Soldiers on the National Mall (2013). Her fields of study include visual culture, material culture, museum studies, memory, and 20th-century cultural history.

This is the first in a series of annual Art and Activism lectures as part of High Stakes Art, a project designed to enhance exhibitions and programming at the Institute for the Humanities Gallery. High Stakes Art and this lecture are made possible by a generous grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Presented by the Institute for the Humanities and the U-M Arts Initiative.

The Future of Art Series is hosted by the U-M Arts Initiative as part of a two-year startup phase.

Arts institutions, such as museums, were founded on colonialist ideas – white Europeans collected the rest of the world during their conquests and travels, establishing places to promote one set of cultural ideals at the expense of others. Though they have reexamined their origins, shifting their missions toward education and visitor experience, museums and other arts institutions carry the baggage of their historic trajectory. For our arts institutions to be truly useful to future audiences, our panelists ask, can we rethink and repair these institutions to make them more relevant? Or, should we knock them all down and rebuild new institutions?

Moderated by Tina Olsen, Director of the University of Michigan Museum of Art.

Panelists:

Maurita Poole is director and curator of the museum at Clark Atlanta University, an HBCU, whose collection focuses on Black artists of the mid-20th century. Her PhD from Emory University is in anthropology; she has worked as a curator at Williams College Museum of Art, The Walters Art Museum, The Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, and Spelman College Museum of Fine Art.

Terence Washington is program director at NXTHVN, a model to advance the careers of artists and curators of color through mentorship and professional development. He worked in the Education Department at the National Gallery of Art after receiving his master’s degree in art history from Williams College.

Anya Sirota is Associate Professor of Architecture Associate Dean of Academic Initiatives at Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Through her design firm, Akoaki, she explores the intersection of design and social enterprise to rethink the urban landscape. She received her Master in Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

She has built a number of projects, such as Songzhuang Art Center and Ordos Art Museum. In the past years she has been engaged extensively in the rural revitalising process in Songyang County, China. Her groundbreaking “architectural acupuncture” is a holistic approach to the social and economic revitalization of rural China and has been selected by UN Habitat as the case study of Inspiring Practice on Urban-Rural Linkages. Xu Tiantian received her masters in architecture and urban design from Harvard Graduate School of Design, and her baccalaureate in architecture from Tsinghua University in Beijing.

DnA_Design and Architecture is an interdisciplinary practice addressing our contemporary living environment, both physical and social, from scales small to large. Our approach to projects starts with research and discussion on context, program, and their interaction, which we believe are the fundamental elements, or the dna, that will define design and architecture, to adapt, engage, and contribute to our society of multiplicity and complexity. Context, program, and their potential relationship, will cultivate architecture into a multidimensional expression and generate new experiment and exploration for users. Architecture will continue to influence and inspire our contemporary life.

Join us for a faculty panel featuring Curriculum/Collection instructors Matias del Campo (Architecture 509 Space, Time, and Artificial Intelligence), Ivo Dinov (Health Sciences 650 Data Science and Predictive Analytics), and Maegan Fairchild (Philosophy 298 Metaphysics: Art and Ontology) as we discuss issues of art, authorship, and creation, as machine learning, or “artificial intelligence,” processes are increasingly applied to the art world. If an algorithm produces a composite portrait based on the work of thousands of artists, who is the “artist”? And how is this challenging our traditional understandings of creation? We’ll talk about these questions and more, with time for Q&A. The panel will be moderated by Kathleen Creel (Stanford, philosopher of machine learning).

This event is in conjunction with the UMMA exhibition Curriculum/Collection, now available to experience online.

Lead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Erica Gervais Pappendick and Ted Pappendick, the Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund, and P.J. and Julie Solit.

The Premodern Colloquium. Gothic Art, Realism and Genre: Thoughts on Eric Auerbach (March 28, 2021 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/81841 81841-20980958@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, March 28, 2021 2:00pm

This Zoom session of the Premodern Colloquium will run at 2:00PM to accommodate time differences.

This paper poses questions about the hierarchies and genres implicit or explicit in present day writing about Gothic art and architecture. A useful starting point is Eric Auerbach's work on mimesis and realism. Auerbach's brilliant literary insights into sermo humilis and the Judeo-Christian rejection of the ancient orders and hierarchies of rhetoric raise important objections. The first is that complex works of literature and art can seldom be pinned down just to one rhetorical mode or level of style. Rhetoric was not a single philosophy or body of knowledge to be adopted or repudiated, but a set of practices that varied ad usum, according to need and occasion.

Here I propose that the medieval Christian dispensation adhered to all the genera dicendi and rhetorical modes, and this opinion is tested with particular regard to epideictic or 'display' rhetoric and its relationship to 'realism'. It was Roland Barthes who noted that the 'reality effect' stemmed in part from epideisis or 'beautiful description'. This seems to offer an alternative route to realism (in so far as we can think causally about this matter) to the frank low speech often identified as sermo humilis. Praise and great speech are also discussed here with a view to understanding the ways that, morally and metaphysically, the canonical monuments of realism in Gothic Europe aimed not to diminish their subjects through naked displays of power, but to involve them in a rhetorical discourse of magnification whose aims were fundamentally political and social.

Finally, how can we recapture the great speech of medieval art without taking recourse to post-medieval notions of the Sublime? And to what extent can such great speech be theorized historically?
