The Politics of Carbon (February 14, 2020 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/70740 70740-17627839@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 14, 2020 10:00am

Carbon pricing in the form of carbon taxes or cap-and-trade has been broadly embraced by economists for decades as the best policy option for mitigating the threat of climate change. But carbon pricing has struggled politically in the United States and abroad. It remains among the least likely climate policies to be adopted and among the most likely to be reversed if approved.

This lecture by Professor Barry Rabe will examine political challenges across each stage of the policy life-cycle, considering not only the impediments to carbon pricing, but also key design elements of the more successful and durable policies to date.

Professor Barry Rabe, J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Professor of Public Policy at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan, is a political scientist trained at the University of Chicago. He is a non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and an elected fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. He is also the author of five books, including “Can We Price Carbon?” (MIT Press, 2018) and is the recipient of four research awards from the American Political Science Association.

This is lecture #2 in five-part series "Facing the Future: The Challenge of Climate Change" which explores how climate change is impacting every corner of our earth, and every aspect of our lives.

Organized By: Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering

As part of the U-M's Earth Day at 50 celebration, CLASP Prof. Mark Moldwin will lead a Teach-In titled "The Climate Consequences of Nuclear War."
Please join us in room CSRB 2238 of the Climate and Space Research Building.

With the end of the Cold War, fear of nuclear war has receded from the consciousness of much of society. With the Trump administration’s foreign policy (withdrawal from the Iran Nuclear deal, saber-rattling and then negotiations with North Korea, the attack of post-WWII international organizations and alliances, and the recent withdrawal from the Intermediate Nuclear Force agreement with Russia) the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists has moved the Doomsday Clock ahead to 100 seconds to midnight (the closest to catastrophe the clock has been since 1953 when the USSR first detonated a hydrogen bomb). This discussion-based seminar describes the climate and space weather consequences of nuclear war to remind us of the apocalyptic fate of civilization that nuclear weapons can unleash and examines what we can do to reduce this threat.

Natural disasters losses have accumulated to over four trillion U.S. dollars and nearly three million fatalities in the past four decades. The number of disasters continues to increase, partly due to increases in frequency, size, or extent of the hazards themselves, but also from increasing vulnerability and/or decreasing resiliency of society. This course will explore vulnerability and resiliency to natural hazards, past and future outlooks, and the role of urbanization and corruption, highlighted by several recent earthquakes and hurricanes.
Mr. Hetland is an associate professor in the UM Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences, specializing in natural hazards, effects of climate change, and vulnerability. The Study Group for those 50 and over is held Thursdays March 12 through March 26.

Speaker: Clark McCall, Citizens' Climate Lobby

Part 1- Understanding what we need to do to address the problem of climate change:

We know climate change is here. We can see serious effects throughout the world already. We know we have a narrow window of time to make changes to avoid the very worst results by limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5-2.0℃. But what exactly will it take to stay within this limit? What changes have the greatest impact? Electric vehicles? Eating a vegetarian diet? Subsidies for solar? A fee on carbon? With the help of a trained facilitator using a policy simulator tool, session attendees will have a chance to discuss different options and explore what impact they will have. Come to this session with your ideas for making an impact and leave knowing what different changes have the most impact.

Part 2- How does a fee on carbon and dividend support environmental justice?

Experts agree that a fee on carbon and a dividend is one of the best policies for addressing climate change. But how does an added fee affect our budgets? How can people with low income manage a carbon fee? This session will examine the economic and personal impacts of a carbon fee and dividend on both the climate and on people.

Solutions to the climate change challenge must come from the market (as comprised of corporations, the government, non-governmental organizations, and others), the most powerful institution on earth, and from business, which is the most powerful entity within it. Though government is an important arbiter of the market, it is business that transcends national boundaries, possessing resources that exceed those of many nations.

Professor Andrew Hoffman will discuss the ways in which climate change is altering and will alter markets, and the kinds of resulting responses from the business sector.

Professor Hoffman, Holcim (U.S.) Professor of Sustainable Enterprise, University of Michigan Ross School of Business and University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability, performs research using organizational behavior models and theories to understand the cultural and institutional aspects of environmental issues for organizations. He has published over 100 articles/book chapters, as well as 16 books, which have been translated into six languages.

This is lecture #4 in the five-part series "Facing the Future: The Challenge of Climate Change" which explores how climate change is impacting every corner of our earth, and every aspect of our lives.

In 2017, the American Psychological Association, Climate for Health, and ecoAmerica published, “Mental Health and our Changing Climate: Impacts, Implications, and Guidance.” In October 2018, the U.N. released a report warning that without “unprecedented” political actions, we will likely see catastrophic conditions by 2040. Globally, most communities are already experiencing effects of climate change, and the poorest members of society remain most vulnerable. In this uncertain context, climate grief is real, particularly as the crisis is largely beyond any individual’s ability to control. As a scholar studying climate change, Sampson has sought emerging evidence-based strategies in hopes of coping and building resiliency. In this workshop, together we will: 1) confront our sometimes silent, biggest fears related to climate change, 2) identify ways our community or current professional work may be climate-affected, and 3) create a personal climate resiliency plan that may include household or community action or policy advocacy strategies.

AT HOME WITH LITERATI: LEE VAN DER VOO & REBECCA HARDIN (October 12, 2020 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/77250 77250-19828102@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, October 12, 2020 7:00pm
Location:
Organized By: School for Environment and Sustainability

When 21 youth activists filed Juliana v. United States, they asserted that the government’s continued negligence of the environment constituted a violation of their rights to life, liberty, and property. In As the World Burns, Lee van der Voo follows the still-evolving legal case as she tells the plaintiffs’ stories, all against the backdrop of the current climate-related crises and the mass protests happening and around the world. Granted unparalleled access to the plaintiffs and their legal team, van der Voo reveals the human side of the climate crisis, the dire effects of decades of inaction, and the reasons why tackling our environmental issues in the courts is possibly our last real hope for meaningful intervention. This book is a call to arms for all of us, young and old alike.

Author Bio:

Lee van der Voo is an award-winning investigative and environmental journalist whose work has appeared in the New York Times, The Atlantic, and The Guardian, among others. Her 2016 book The Fish Market, which chronicles the gentrification of the sea in the name of sustainable seafood, won an Oregon Book Award for General Nonfiction.

Natural Disasters: Vulnerability, Resilience, and a Changing World (November 5, 2020 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/75522 75522-19515166@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 5, 2020 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

Naturally occurring hazards, such as earthquakes and hurricanes, occur every year and affect nearly every part of the Earth. Their cumulative cost can be extreme in terms of both dollars and lives lost. While less frequent, pandemics have also resulted in staggering losses. The loss depends not only on the severity of the effects, but also on the vulnerability and resiliency of the affected society. The number and cost of disasters have been increasing over the last few decades, a pattern which is likely to continue. This increase may be due both to hazards increasing in frequency, size, or extent, and to an increasing vulnerability and/or decreasing resiliency of populations at risk.

This course will start with an examination of the trends and patterns of past disasters, discussing socioeconomic factors that increase vulnerability. We will then discuss the role of corruption and government effectiveness in exacerbating vulnerability, the differences between vulnerability and resiliency on a local scale, and why resiliency is so difficult to quantify. Finally, we will discuss the role of global demographics trends and changing climate with regard to future hazards and our increasing vulnerability to them. We will use the Sichuan, China (2008), L’Aquila, Italy (2009), and Haiti (2010) earthquakes, hurricanes Katrina (2005), Sandy (2012), Harvey (2017), and Maria (2017), and the current COVID-19 pandemic as case studies.

Eric Hetland is an associate professor in the UM Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences, specializing in earthquakes and volcanoes. Eric also develops statistical tools to tackle problems ranging from climate change to vulnerability.

This study group will be held on Thursdays from November 5 through 19.

Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

Worried about climate change? Wondering how you can make a real difference? Come to the monthly meeting of the Ann Arbor chapter of Citizens' Climate Lobby (CCL). CCL is a national, grassroots organization working to enact federal legislation to put a price on CO2. It is the most focused and influential organization working on national climate policy. We are working to build support for the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (energyinnovationact.org). This comprehensive, bipartisan legislation is projected to reduce our carbon emissions by at least 40% in 12 years. Our meetings consist of dialing in to a national conference call (featuring different guest speakers each month), followed by local discussion of actions. Newcomers are welcome to come at 12:30 for a brief overview.

Near Term to Net Zero: A New Approach to Setting Carbon Prices (December 2, 2020 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/78892 78892-20139089@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, December 2, 2020 8:00pm

Join Citizens' Climate Lobby for a presentation on a new method for determining the carbon price needed to achieve net zero CO2 emissions.

Economists widely agree that putting a price on fossil fuels is the most effective tool for reducing carbon emissions. But what level of carbon price is needed to reduce carbon emissions fast enough to prevent catastrophic climate change?

Prof. Alexander R. Barron will present a new method he and colleagues have developed to calculate the necessary carbon price. Their work was recently published in the paper "A near-term to net zero alternative to the social cost of carbon for setting carbon prices," N. Kaufman, A. Barron, W. Krawczyk, P. Marsters and H. McJeon, Nature Climate Change. As the authors have written,

"This approach enables policymakers to use both climate science and economics to chart an effective, efficient pathway to net-zero emissions."

Dr. Barron is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Policy at Smith College. Before joining Smith, he worked in Congress to design comprehensive climate legislation (including the American Clean Energy and Security Act), and covered international climate negotiations. He also worked in the Office of Policy at the EPA, where he advised senior EPA leadership and worked on standards to reduce carbon pollution (e.g., the Clean Power Plan), cross-state air pollution, and mercury and other toxics. He also helped guide EPA’s work on environmental economics and climate adaptation.

The presentation will be followed by time for discussion.

Please register using the Eventbrite Registration link. Zoom connection instructions will be sent via email prior to the event.

Sponsored by the Ann Arbor and University of Michigan chapters of Citizens' Climate Lobby.
