As a global community, we are facing an undeniable climate crisis that “unequivocally” has been caused by human activity. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change states that “every corner of the planet is already being affected and it could get far worse.” Armenia is no exception. This conference seeks to begin an interdisciplinary discussion inviting environmental scientists, geographers, policy experts, and activists to examine challenges posed by climate change and recurrent conflict, as well as present possible solutions through policy advocacy and local activism.

This three-day conference begins with a discussion of the environmental impact of war and violence, past and present, in the region of Nagorno-Karabakh moving to a broader discussion of the effects of the global climate crisis on Armenia’s land, water, and other natural resources. The participants will discuss the issues, challenges, and current policies that seek to mitigate the problems.

postcommodities... architecture after stuff (October 8, 2021 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/86945 86945-21637612@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 8, 2021 6:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning

We have made too much stuff. The current production model of more, faster, cheaper - which makes what is culture today, product tomorrow, trash the next - has created a counterproductive muchness of simultaneous material excess and environmental precarity. This persistent materialism is contributing to social inequity and climate crisis alike and from material extraction to Pinterest boards to distribution centers, architecture is implicated at all scales of this material saturation.

Beginning from this moment of material reckoning, postcommodities… architecture after stuff argues that our resources should no longer come from the ground, but from the muchness we have already produced. The symposium foregrounds designers and thinkers who are proposing other-again-new modes of operating within this moment, those that present tactics, material ingenuities, and tools needed for a more future-minded and non-extractive material culture.

postcommodities… architecture after stuff explores the possibilities of architecture’s participation in a new socio-material ecology by focusing on reversible design, circular materials, commodity exchange networks, protocols of maintenance and commercial antagonisms, to set the questions:

Is there material after materialism?

What can architecture do with all this stuff?

his mixed-modality 2-day symposium will presented both in-person in Ann Arbor, MI and streamed virtually.

In October of this year, the United Nations Human Rights Council recognized for the first time the human right to a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment. Why did the Council finally adopt this right? What effect will recognition have? How might the right contribute to the ongoing application of human rights to environmental issues such as climate change and the conservation of biodiversity?

Sea level rise and climate change are a major threat for low-lying delta areas. This contribution will focus on the effects of various sea-level rise scenarios for the Dutch flood protection and water management system, and the options for adaptation. The role of infrastructural and nature-based solutions will be discussed as well as their scalability and limits in the context of future conditions. Moreover, the costs and feasibility of future adaptation will be highlighted. The final part of the presentation will focus on the possibilities and limitations of flood risk reduction for US and international deltas.

Bas Jonkman is a professor of Hydraulic Engineering at Delft University, the Netherlands. He holds the chair of Integral Hydraulic Engineering, which focuses on research and education in the fields of hydraulic structures and flood risk. He holds a PhD degree from TU Delft and has worked for the Dutch government, Royal Haskoning DHV and UC Berkeley. While weather-related disasters happen regularly, protective infrastructure and building codes usually prevent population loss. Hurricane Katrina’s devastating effects on New Orleans’ levee system and the built environment in other coastline communities in the Gulf of Mexico in 2005 is the exception that proves this rule. Or is it? Empirical studies of hurricane exposure and county-level population change show heterogeneous patterns of post-hurricane population trends. This presentation reviews research on this topic using the weather and population data currently available, and then considers the data and methods that would allow us to answer key questions about disaster-related migration in the US. Specifically, which disasters produce out-migration responses? Where have residents who migrated from disaster-affected places resettle? How do migration systems help us predict post-disaster residential mobility? Which types of residents are most likely to move from disaster-affected places? A transdisciplinary and community-engaged research team is necessary to effectively pursue this research agenda and use that knowledge to prepare for and protect against disaster impacts.

This lecture will examine public opinion on climate change. It follows up work published by Professor Andrew Hoffman 10 years ago. Current data show some encouraging new trends. Also, the same variables influence people’s attitudes and opinions toward climate and the threats it represents: Liberalism-Conservatism, political party affiliation, overall values, and worldview. Drawing on insights from sociology, psychology, and political science, Professor Hoffman will go on to discuss strategies that may increase public consensus concerning climate change and its mitigation.

Dr. Andrew (Andy) Hoffman is the Holcim U.S. Professor Enterprise of Sustainable Enterprises at the University of Michigan, a position that holds joint appointments in the Stephen. M. Ross School of Business and the School for Environment & Sustainability. Professor Hoffman’s research uses organizational behavior models and theories to understand the cultural and institutional aspects of environmental issues for organizations. He has published over 100 articles/book chapters, as well
as 16 books which have been translated into six languages.

This is the third of five lectures to be presented once each month from February through June of 2022. A new series will start in September 2022.The next lecture in the current series will take place May 10, 2022.The title is: Immigration, Redistribution, and Right-Wing Populi in Europe. Learn from well-known experts about an array of interesting subjects, with an interactive Q&A period following each lecture.

Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the lecture.

Carbon pricing is one measure that many experts believe can be implemented quickly and can dramatically lower carbon emissions. Mary Garton, of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby and the Climate Reality Project will discuss the role of national carbon pricing in addressing the climate crisis. This presentation is aimed to be understandable by those with no previous knowledge, yet educational for those already interested and active in working toward climate solutions.

Mary Garton is a nurse and educator. Ms. Garton has participated in 28 lobby meetings with 15 different members of Congress or their legislative aides. She has been active with Citizens Climate Lobby for 5 years, and believes, like they do, that the best way to fight one’s own climate anxiety is to actively work towards a viable solution.

This event is in partnership with the Ann Arbor District Library and will take place at the Westgate Branch of the Ann Arbor District Library, 2503 Jackson Ave.

The study of water ethics and justice is inherently without boundaries; it moves among various connected disciplines, such as philosophy, law, history, engineering, and geography. This event brings together academic professionals, policy experts, other practitioners, and the general public to discuss this most pressing issue. The transdisciplinary nature of water justice requires study that intersects ethical, scientific, cultural, and justice-related themes and concerns which are reflected in the
presentations and discussions of this conference. Our opportune location at the US-Canada border lends itself to vibrant study of water ethics, justice, governance, and management in each respective country, as well as between them. Further, this event brings together professionals to discuss these water issues in the face of climate change and the implications for cross-border/ transboundary water governance; hence, the speakers are from Canada and the US (with the majority from the US-Canada border region in Michigan and southwestern Ontario).
