Humans are remarkable vocal learners. The language we learn to speak as children is entirely based on the speech we hear around us, and as adults, we even match our pronunciations to those of others in our social groups. What are the evolutionary origins of this vocal flexibility? Our closest living relatives, the nonhuman primates, are born with the ability to produce all of their vocalizations. However, they may adjust their vocalizations in more subtle ways to match those of others in their social groups, just as humans do. Using acoustic analysis methods, I assessed whether the calls of gelada monkeys, a highly vocal primate species, differed across social groups. In this talk, I will share my findings and discuss a possible spatial cohesion function for vocal matching in this species.

Abstract:

The nucleus accumbens shell (NAc) and the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) are robust generators of intense reward-related motivation. Both structures contain two distinct populations of neurons that respectively have either D1-type receptors for dopamine or D2-type of receptors. I sought to examine the reward roles of D1 versus D2 neuron populations in NAc shell and in CeA, by comparing optogenetic self-stimulation as laser excitation of either D1 neuron or D2 neurons in each structure (using D1-Cre and A2A/D2-Cre rats developed by Ferrario/Berke labs). My results suggest a strong role of D1 neurons in reward motivation in both NAc and CeA. My results also suggest at least moderate reward roles for D2 neurons, especially in CeA but also to some extent in NAc shell (at least under certain conditions).

About the Presentation:
During the 2011 popular uprisings in the Arab world, battles unfolded through oppositional image-worlds, in which the incumbent icons of state were mocked via visual forms of humor falling all along the comedic spectrum. In Libya, pictorial forms of ridicule had as their main target the country’s “Brother Leader” Muammar al-Gaddafi. After failing to win support from Arab governments, Gaddafi fashioned himself as a traditional sub-Saharan chief and the “King of Kings of Africa.” His bombastic title, Afro-like hairdo, and eye-catching robes made him an easy target for visual satire, which turned visibly more racist when he began using mercenaries drawn from sub-Saharan Africa to suppress street demonstrations. Throughout the uprisings, members of the opposition—including cartoonists and muralists—sought to degrade Gaddafi through the use of visual stereotypes, revealing that within the particular case of Libya, satirical contentions during the so-called “Arab Spring” were not just transgressive and factional but instrumentally racist as well.

About the Speaker:
Christiane Gruber’s primary field of research is Islamic book arts, paintings of the Prophet Muhammad, and Islamic ascension texts and images, about which she has written two books and edited a volume of articles. She also pursues research in Islamic book arts and codicology, having authored the online catalogue of Islamic calligraphies in the Library of Congress as well as edited the volume of articles, The Islamic Manuscript Tradition. Her third field of specialization is modern Islamic visual culture and post-revolutionary Iranian visual and material culture, about which she has written several articles. She also has co-edited two volumes on Islamic and cross-cultural visual cultures. She recently completed her third book, titled The Praiseworthy One: The Prophet Muhammad in Islamic Texts and Images.

About the Presentation:
The 2011 revolution unleashed passionate public concern about how to create a “New Egypt.” Islamic channels were important sites of these debates as rival television preachers gave media form to their competing visions of what a virtuous life entails and what an ethical polity looks like. Based on fieldwork in Cairo with the “New Preachers” – so named because of their novel styles of Islamic media – this talk explores what these on and off-screen struggles reveal about Islam’s competing theologies and the distinctive media forms they take. It also considers what methodological attunements such contested religious mediations demand of their ethnographers.


About the Speaker:
Yasmin Moll is an assistant professor in the department of anthropology. She is writing a book about new forms of Islamic media and the religious contention they provoke against the backdrop of Egypt’s 2011 revolution. Her fieldwork was supported by numerous national grants, including from the Social Science Research Council, the National Science Foundation and the Fulbright Commission. Her publications include articles in Cultural Anthropology, Public Culture, and Middle East Report, among others. She is also a documentary filmmaker and a former member of the Michigan Society of Fellows.

The Linguistics Department colloquium series begins Friday, September 25, with a virtual talk by Sharese King, Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Chicago. Dr. King will present "Rethinking Race and Place and its Role in Achieving Social Justice in Linguistics."

Dr. King is a sociolinguist interested in the relationship between race, place, and language variation. She explores how African Americans use language to construct multidimensional identities and how these constructions are perceived and evaluated across different listener populations. Drawing on both ethnographic and experimental techniques, her work explores both the linguistic construction of race and the ways in which language is racialized.

ABSTRACT

Recent explorations of regional variation across African American speech communities have brought to the forefront the linguistic heterogeneity across African American Language (AAL). Having problematized the presentation of AAL as a uniform variety (Wolfram 2007; 2015), intra-group analyses highlight the diverse social and linguistic constructions among African American speakers. In this talk, I zoom in on three personae local to the African American community in Rochester, New York, contextualizing each style against the backdrop of a post-industrial city in the Rustbelt region. I investigate how the three personae, The Mobile Professional, The Hood Kid, and The Biker recruit or reject vocalic patterns of the Northern Cities Shift, as well as to construct identities relevant to their social landscape. The findings challenge how we define the dialect, while also complicating our understanding of the relationship between race, identity, and language. Further, this work imagines more ways to enact social justice in the study of variationism by expanding our representation of African Americans' multidimensional identities.

In an exploratory project funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Ithaka S+R developed a novel approach to measuring a liberal arts and sciences educational experience, and examining its relationship with student outcomes. They will present their framework for defining and capturing the core features of a liberal arts and sciences educational experience, their index for measuring the degree to which a subset of higher education institutions in the US have offered those features to their students, and their institution-level analyses examining the relationship between index scores and students’ short-term academic and long-term labor market outcomes.

This workshop is open to students at all points in their graduate careers, and there will be time allotted for both hands on work and questions.

Dr. Elling is the University Career Center's Coordinator for Graduate Student Career Advancement, and is embedded in Rackham to ensure easy access for graduate students to both UCC and Rackham resources. She provides individual career counseling to Ph.D. students, programming for Rackham Master's and Ph.D. students, and consults and collaborates with U-M faculty in support of graduate student career development. Prior to joining UCC/Rackham, Dr. Elling served as the Associate Director at U-M's CEW+, Interim Assistant Dean & Director for Counseling Services at Albion College, and Training Director at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's Counseling Services. A U-M alumna (Bachelor’s degree in Psychology), she received her Master’s degree and PhD in Clinical Psychology from Loyola University, Chicago. Dr. Elling has a longstanding interest in women's and diversity, equity and inclusion issues, and enjoys working with people at all stages of their careers and educational journeys.

Antonella Sorace, Professor of Developmental Linguistics, University of Edinburgh, will give a virtual colloquium: “The ecology of L2 learning and L1 change in adult bilingualism.”

ABSTRACT
Recent research on adult bilingualism shows that selective aspects of grammar become variable in speakers experiencing native language (L1) attrition from learning a second language. I will first show that the structures affected involve “complex contingencies” (Phillips & Ehrenhofer 2015) that require efficient integration of information across (syntactic, pragmatic and contextual) domains. These are the same structures that remain variable even in highly proficient non-native (L2) speakers of the same language (Sorace 2011, 2016). I will then consider various factors that may play a role in these phenomena, including cross-linguistic effects, the cognitive costs of handling two languages, and the role of over-expliciteness. I will finally point to the possibility that L1 change and L2 acquisition may be functionally related in active proficient bilinguals. I will conclude that L1 attrition is a natural consequence of language contact, first in the bilingual brain and then in bilingual communities, which may eventually lead to language change. Understanding the big picture requires interdisciplinary research on different facets of bilingualism that combines the strengths of both linguistic and cognitive models.

The major challenge in treating drug addiction is that recovering addicts remain vulnerable to drug craving and relapse even after long periods of abstinence. The goal of the Wolf lab is to understand synaptic mechanisms that maintain this persistent vulnerability to relapse.

Most of our studies use the incubation of craving model. Incubation refers to the progressive increase in cue-induced craving that develops after discontinuing drug self-administration. Craving remains at high (incubated) levels for months. Incubation of craving also occurs in humans.

Our work has focused on excitatory synapses in the nucleus accumbens, a key brain region for motivated behavior. My talk will describe published and unpublished work showing profound alterations in all of the major glutamate receptors in the NAc (AMPA, NMDA and metabotropic glutamate receptors) after incubation of cocaine craving and the role of protein translation in mediating this plasticity.

Linguist Matt Wagers of the University of California, Santa Cruz, will give a talk on Friday, October 23, titled "Accessibility and timing."

ABSTRACT
Subject relative clauses are generally easier to comprehend than non-subject relative clauses. This subject gap advantage (SGA) is a fact that grounded, conjecturally, Keenan & Comrie (1977)’s Accessibility Hierarchy and one which has been extensively investigated (e.g., Kwon, Lee, Gordon, Kluender & Polinsky, 2010). In recent years a new generation of studies has challenged or re-characterized the SGA by incorporating data from language users whose grammars provide better resources for disentangling competing theories, and who are not typically included in psycholinguistic experiments. This has certainly resulted in a more nuanced understanding of the SGA and relative clause processing. But more than that, it has also mapped out new topics, such as the processing of verb-initial clauses or ergative-absolutive case systems. In the first part of the talk, I will tour this new state-of-the-art to highlight some of these emerging findings and research agendas. In the second part of the talk, I will draw on work from my own group on Chamorro and Zapotec to support the idea that the SGA is driven fundamentally by timing, that is, the order in which syntactic hypotheses are projected from partial evidence.

About the Presentation:
Rising anti-immigration sentiments in the United States and elsewhere are built on nativist conceptions entirely innocent of any knowledge of why immigrants are here in the first place. Nativists fail to recognize global connections and how immigrants struggle to make both host and original countries better places. This talk highlights how both national and transnational processes are connected and how these processes shape immigrants’ and trans-local actors’ fight for and debates over equal citizenship rights, inclusion, and belonging. Reflecting on my own work on Sudanese refugees, diaspora, and the current revolution in the Sudan, I explore how the quest for recognition and equal citizenship rights has influenced Sudanese activists’ representation and imagination of both national and transnational citizenship.

About the Speaker:
Amal Hassan Fadlalla is a Professor of Anthropology, Women’s and Gender Studies, and Afroamerican and African studies at the University of Michigan Her research interests and teaching focus on global issues and perspectives related to gender, health, reproduction, diaspora, transnationalism, population, development, and human rights and humanitarianism. She holds B.sc and Masters degrees from the University of Khartoum, Sudan (1986, 1992) and a Ph. D from Northwestern University (2000).

Gina Shereda is the Program Lead for STEM Professional Development at Rackham. She works with the Professional and Academic Development team to develop innovative programming including workshops, seminars, networking events, panels, job simulations, and career treks for U-M graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. She received her Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2013. Prior to joining Rackham, she held roles at U-M as an instructional consultant at the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching and as the Associate Director of the Science Learning Center.

Abstract
Due to the branching character of neutron transport in multiplying media (particle production by fission), neutron reactions and numbers are correlated in space and time. Hence the statistics of the neutron distribution become non-trivial (non-Poisson), and each statistical moment (mean, variance etc) carries independent information. This wealth of information was originally used only to determine subcritical reactivity during start-up (Feynman-alpha method) from the first two moments of the detector counts. However, the number of applications and corresponding new methods has exploded in the last two decades with new areas such as neutron fluctuations in accelerator driven systems (ADS) and multiplicity counting of neutrons and photons for nuclear safeguards, including developments in the detection statistics.
The talk will give an overview of both the principles of the methods, including an essay on the forward and adjoint forms of the master equations and their moments, as well as of the latest developments and applications, such as using fluctuations in the detector current to replace pulse counting techniques. This latter means that the statistical information of discrete underlying events can be unfolded from the continuous random processes which they induce. One advantage of such a method is that it is free from the dead time problem, present in pulse counting techniques. Thus the application area can be extended to high count rate processes, such as multiplicity measurements of high activity spent fuel or reactivity measurements by the Feynman- or Rossi-alpha methods in power reactors.

Bio
Imre Pázsit is full professor at the Department of Physics, Division of Subatomic, High Energy and Plasma Physics, Nuclear Engineering Group, at Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg, Sweden. His research interests are transport theory of neutral and charged particles; fluctuations in neutron transport and atomic collision cascades; theory of multiplicity in nuclear safeguards; reactor diagnostics based on noise analysis including diagnostics of two-phase flow; elaboration of inverse methods in neutron noise diagnostics; intelligent computing methods such as artificial neural networks and wavelet analysis, and, recently, fractional kinetics and fractional diffusion processes.
Prof. Pázsit has published over 210 articles in international journals. Together with L. Pál, he authored the book “Neutron Fluctuations – a Treatise on the Theory of Branching Processes”, Elsevier (2008). He is a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society, a Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, and the fourth recipient of the Leo Szilard Medal of the Hungarian Nuclear Society (2016). He is also Honorary Editor of the Elsevier journal “Annals of Nuclear Energy."

Linguists Betsy Sneller and Suzanne Wagner of Michigan State University will present their project "MI Diaries: Tracking language change during a pandemic."

ABSTRACT
Face-to-face interaction has long been hypothesized to be a central component of both sociolinguistic development for individuals as well as of language change across an entire community. The social distancing conditions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic introduced a deep and long term disruption to typical face-to-face interaction for Michiganders, which in turn enables researchers to test precisely how these widescale disruptions to face-to-face interactions impact sociolinguistic development for children and participation in lifespan change for adults. In this talk, we introduce the MI-Diaries project, which has been tracking audio diaries from participants since the beginning of the pandemic. We highlight some of the major theoretical goals of the project, as well as discuss some of the methodological innovations necessary for conducting sociolinguistic fieldwork during a pandemic.

Abstract
The liquid fueled MSR is among the advanced reactor concepts being considered for development by the U.S. Department of Energy. Key attributes of this reactor concept include: (i) high degree of passive safety, (ii) atmospheric pressure operation, (iii) high thermal efficiency due to high volumetric heat capacity and thermal conductivity of liquid salts, (iv) lower spent fuel per unit of energy, (v) high solubility of most fission products in liquid salts and (vi) absence of fuel assemblies. Materials selection for liquid fueled MSRs is based on ASME Sec III Div 5 and thus present unique challenges because of the high Cr content of current qualified alloys. Consequently, and considering the short-term deployment of MSRs, it is necessary to independently improve corrosion resistance of current code codified alloys by surface treatments. On the other hand, if one considers long-term deployment of MSRs, novel code certified alloys would need to be developed. Indeed, although Hastelloy-N, a low Cr, high Mo alloy developed during the MSRE program, has shown remarkable corrosion resistance in molten fluoride salts, this alloy has limited creep-rupture strength, irradiation damage resistance and has shown corrosion induced embrittlement. Consequently, this study focuses on the down-selection of a series of cladded 316H stainless steels (SS) and novel alloys based on corrosion resistance in molten FLiNaK at 700°C for up to 1000 hours. Finally, specific separate effects experiments are conducted to assess the influence of the experimental conditions on corrosion and mass transport.

Bio
Dr. Adrien Couet is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he manages the MAterials Degradation under COrrosion and Radiation (MADCOR) laboratory. Previously, he worked as a nuclear materials research engineer at EDF (Electricité de France) in France, focusing on high-temperature aqueous corrosion and modeling corrosion of nuclear materials. He got hired at EDF after graduating in 2014 with a PhD in Nuclear and Mechnical Engineering from Penn State University. Over the last five years, Dr. Couet has worked on developing his research group around fundamental understanding of materials degradation and alloy design for extreme environments. MADCOR research programs evolves around fuel cladding corrosion in LWRs, developing structural materials and cladding for molten salt reactors and designing novel radiation resistant compositionally complex alloys. Dr. Couet also co-manages the UW Ion Beam Laboratory and is a co-organizer of the Nuclear Innovation Bootcamp, which aims at training future entrepreneurs in the nuclear field.

Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) is frequently utilized during surgical procedures that place the brain, spine, or other neural elements at risk. The goals of neuromonitoring are first, to provide neuroprotection to the patient by warning the surgical team of impending injury so that permanent damage can be prevented, and second, to assist with neuronavigation. The ability to ascertain the functional integrity of the nervous system during complex procedures permits surgical approaches that can facilitate safer and more complete treatment of patients. This presentation will give an overview of some fundamental concepts found universally in IONM and then describe more specialized methods utilized in less-frequently encountered procedures. Finally, we will focus our discussion on the use of IONM methods to explore hypotheses concerning the mechanisms of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) therapy for movement disorders.

Life history trade-offs represent constrains in the life of organisms. However, they can also contribute to balancing reproductive success. Here, I analyze how chronic and acute ecological burdens affect the demography of Cayo Santiago rhesus macaques and propose life history trade-offs as a potential mechanism for maintaining fitness when experiencing ecological adversity. Specifically, I decompose the effects of population density and hurricanes on population growth rate into survival and reproduction and quantify the life cycle transitions contributing the most to population fitness. My analysis shows that females exhibit a reduced reproductive output when experiencing these ecological adversities as a result of an overall decrease in mean age-specific fertility and a delay in sexual maturity. Yet, these females exhibit the survival and lifetime reproductive success expected from other females that did not experience the same level of adversity in life. My analysis supports trade-offs between survival and reproduction as a mechanism that allows females to suppress fertility during particular years and allocate more energy to growth or survival, in order to ensure future reproductive potential.

The Pragmatics of Multifunctional Items in Kwéyòl Donmnik, French, and English

As a Creole emerges and evolves, its creators alter and shift the functions of the words and structures contributed by its various source languages, yielding an abundance of multifunctional items whose meanings are challenging to determine. In the field of pragmatics, whole research areas are dedicated to the complexities of multifunctional items, particularly elements like deictics and pragmatic markers that help speakers navigate discourse. The discourse-level contributions of multifunctional items are rarely the focus of work on Creoles and other contact varieties, and pragmatic research tends to focus on better-documented languages of prestige. As a result, there is much room for fruitful work at the intersections between creolistics and pragmatics, and such scholarship both expands our knowledge of multifunctional items cross-linguistically and deepens our understanding of language contact by addressing it at the pragmatic level. The goal of my research is to explore these intersections. Using corpus-based and experimental methods, I examine the pragmatics of multifunctional elements such as locative deictics and pragmatic markers in Kwéyòl Donmnik (an understudied Creole language declining in use) and its superstrates, French and English. In this talk, I will describe the fruits of my research journey thus far as well as the dissertation work I am now conducting.

A sociophonetic study of tones on Jeju Island

In this talk I will discuss the results of a sociophonetic study on the emergence of a tonal distinction in Jejueo, an endangered Koreanic language indigenous to Jeju Island, South Korea. The three-way stop contrast in Korean, between fortis, lenis and aspirated voiceless stops is well documented. In recent years the length of the VOT which comprised the phonetic distinction in the three-way contrast has been converging for lenis and aspirated stops across many varieties of Korean. At the same time, vowels following the converging lenis and aspirated stops have developed low and high pitch, respectively. The shifting of cues from VOT to tone for Korean stop consonants can be described as tonogenesis, first discovered in Seoul Korean. With the degree of influence that the highly prestigious Seoul variety of Korean has on media and education, tonogenesis has spread outward from the Seoul/ Gyeonggi province area.
In this talk I will present updated results of an apparent-time sociophonetic study of the development of a tonal distinction in Jejueo. The study shows that tonogenesis has spread outward from mainland Korea and has entered Jejueo for all speakers, but to varying degrees, based on extralinguistic factors of age, language dominance in Korean and Jejueo, and language attitudes toward Jejueo. More broadly, this study adds to the discussion of language loss and sound change, as language dominance and attitudes are shown to contribute to phonological attrition of heritage language in a disglossic environment.

Abstract:
Animal behavior is a key component of biological adaptations, where fitness relies on the ability to find mates, acquire food, and avoid predation. Variation in the availability of key ecological resources can drive the diversification of animal behaviors, although the neural mechanisms responsible have remained elusive. I will discuss how ecological resources have driven the evolution of parent-offspring interactions. Parental care is a key evolutionary innovation that facilitates the exploitation of novel habitats, influences fitness and survival of parents and offspring, and serves as an evolutionary precursor to the emergence of complex social behaviors. To study the link between ecology and behavioral adaptations, my lab uses poison frogs as a model system, as they show remarkable variation in parental care strategies. I will discuss how a key ecological resource drove the evolution of egg-feeding behavior in poison frogs. Mothers provide trophic, unfertilized eggs to their developing tadpoles. In turn, tadpoles beg their mothers for meals by performing a conspicuous dance display, which they are more likely to perform when they are hungry. In both cases, a general theme emerges in the brain, where the modification of neuronal circuits regulating feeding behavior also tune social interactions. Overall this body of work is providing insight into how ecological factors, like nutrient availability and predation, shape behavioral evolution through the modification of feeding-related circuitry in the brain.

The hippocampus and posterior parietal cortex are each known to be key contributors to spatial cognition. Anatomically between these structures lie the subiculum and the retrosplenial cortex, brain structures whose roles in a distributed system for cognitive mapping are only now being revealed. Our recent projects examining the dynamics of neurons in these regions during performance of navigational tasks reveal conjunctions of multiple spatial relationships consistent with a transformation of spatial cognition to action. However, we also observe unique forms of tuning to orientation and route locations that signal a larger role in encoding the structural layout of paths within an environment. We therefore speculate that these brain regions together map path network topologies.

Dr. Wassink is Director of the Sociolinguistics Laboratory and an associate professor of Linguistics at the University of Washington. She will give a talk titled "Uneven success: racial bias in automatic speech recognition."

ABSTRACT
Racial bias in automatic speech recognition is an emerging area of concern in fields associated with human-computer interaction. Research to date suggests that sociolinguistic variation, namely systematic sources of sociophonetic variation, has yet to be extensively exploited in Acoustic Model architectures. This talk reports a study that evaluates the performance of one ASR system for a multi-ethnic sample of speakers from the American Pacific Northwest (including Native American, African American, European American and ChicanX speakers). Using a sociophonetic approach to characterizing vocalic and consonantal variation, I ask which dialect features appear to be most challenging for our ASR system. We also ask which error types are particular to the four ethnic dialects sampled. Recordings of both conversational and read speech were coded for a common set of 18 sociophonetic variables with distinct phonetic profiles. Automatic transcription was achieved using CLOx, a custom-built ASR system created in the University of Washington Sociolinguistics Laboratory. Normalized error frequency rates (Nf) are compared across ethnic group samples to evaluate CLOx performance. Nf error rates demonstrate clear differential performance in the ASR system, pointing to racial bias in system output. Specific predictions are made regarding approaches that might be taken to leverage sociophonetic knowledge to improve sociolect-recognition accuracy in ASR systems.

Two major challenges facing the genetics of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are: 1) the large and growing number of candidate risk genes with poorly characterized biological functions and 2) determining whether phenotypic disruptions in these new risk genes are reversible after development. Here, we developed a pipeline to discover functions of ASD-associated genes by inactivating each gene in the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans and observing the phenotypic consequences using machine vision. We quantified 26 phenotypes spanning morphology, locomotion, tactile sensitivity, and learning in >27,000 animals representing 135 genotypes, allowing us to identify disruptions in habituation (a neural circuits plastic ability to decrease responding to repeated sensory stimuli) as a shared impairment. Next, we used CRISPR-Cas9 auxin inducible degradation to determine that habituation impairments caused by developmental loss of the sole C. elegans ortholog of vertebrate neuroligins can be reversed by adult-specific re-expression. We are now using this phenotypic database to rapidly test whether phenotypic disruptions in several other ASD-associated genes are reversible in adulthood. This work charts the phenotypic landscape of ASD-associated genes and will prioritize reversible candidates for further study and therapeutic development.

Successful spatial navigation and orientation are critical for survival. Lesions to a brain region called the retrosplenial cortex (RSC) dramatically impair spatial orientation abilities, but little is known about how the RSC is able to carry out these GPS-like functions. Here, we build towards a comprehensive cellular and circuit understanding of the RSC. We identify a uniquely small and excitable pyramidal neuron and show that it is the primary recipient of spatially-relevant inputs to the RSC, allowing this cell to simultaneously encode both head speed and direction. We also discover a uniquely fast brain rhythm in the RSC and show that this rhythm is controlled precisely by the speed of movement. Finally, we demonstrate how some of the critical building blocks of RSC function are impaired in a preclinical model of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), laying the foundation for understanding why the majority of persons with AD suffer from pronounced spatial disorientation.

Humans exhibit a suite of changes in cognition across the lifespan, both in early development and during aging. Comparative patterns are crucial to infer the biological basis and evolutionary significance of human traits, but little is known about whether other primates show similar cognitive changes over development. I will present research examining the emergence of social cognition, spatial memory, and decision-making capacities across different primates that vary in socioecology and life history characteristics. I will use this comparative data to test when different developmental trajectories emerge, and how the pace and pattern of development shapes the expression of mature cognitive traits across species.

Dr. Ivanova, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Texas at El Paso, will present "Bilingual language control, or how bilinguals manage to stick to one language error-free."

ABSTRACT
Bilinguals are mental jugglers, and skilled ones, too: They easily switch languages when they want to but accurately keep to the same language when their other language may not be understood. To avoid saying something in the wrong language by mistake, bilinguals need to engage language control mechanisms (in the most widely accepted view, inhibition of the non-target language: Green, 1998). Understanding language control is necessary to understand the potential sources of the widely-discussed bilingual mental and neural adaptations (aka “the bilingual advantage”), but currently there are a lot of open questions. In this talk, I will examine whether language control mechanisms are specific to bilinguals or are wider-application mechanisms for interference resolution; whether language control is applied only once after a language switch or all the time; and whether it is limited to lexico-semantic information or also functions over structural representations. Finally, I will present work showing for the first time how language control manifests in spontaneous connected speech, and will discuss how such work can help constrain theories of bilingual “mental juggling”.

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is the collection of cognitive impairments experienced by patients shortly following surgery. These symptoms can range from mild to severe and can last from just a few days to months. The persistent form of POCD is most often experienced by older adults and is a known risk factor for developing Alzheimer's disease. In her talk, Dr. Barrientos will introduce her rodent model of POCD. She will discuss how microglial sensitization in the aged brain makes it more vulnerable to inflammatory challenges leading to precipitous cognitive impairments. She will discuss how opioids, administered for postsurgical pain, can evoke a neuroinflammatory response through a TLR4-mediated mechanism thus prolonging and exacerbating POCD symptoms in aged rats.

*Chuanqi* is a dramatic genre comprising dialogue and arias that was prevalent in late Ming and early Qing China. Sheng's work investigates the interface between page and performance to explore the relations among literary texts, musical sound, and staging practices embedded in the genre, thereby decentering the hegemony of text in the study of *chuanqi.*

For this talk, Sheng will focus on *Kunshan qiang,* a specific singing style, and analyze how it became the refined, orthodox voice of *chuanqi* in early modern China. The discussion will center on a series of material practices paramount to the reform of Kunshan qiang, including the introduction of melodic instruments, the construction of a new stylized language for singing through typographical inventions, and the promotion of bodily techniques of rhythm. Such analyses of material practices cast light on a late Ming ecology of music in which the human body was deployed together with instruments and writing/printing technology as an essential tool for the practice, reproduction, and circulation of music.

Social behavior in rats is a phenomenon that is often studied in rats. Previous studies have found that social housing has an attenuating effect on the motivation to self-administer methamphetamine (METH) in female rats. Interestingly, females tend to benefit from having a cage mate while male rats do not. In order to understand how social behavior could be attenuating METH-taking behavior, the quality of the relationships between cage mates is being investigated to look at potential causes of this sex difference. Additionally, we are looking at dopamine (DA) release changes in the nucleus accumbens during baseline and after METH injections using fast scan cyclic voltammetry to understand the underlying neurochemical mechanisms that are occurring with different social housing conditions.

Abstract:
As anyone who has gone through adolescence, pregnancy, or aging can attest: hormones can exert powerful effects on brain and behavior. My laboratory has focused primarily on three main areas of research: how sex, sex and stress hormones affect neuroplasticity, cognition and emotional behaviors. Why do I study sex differences in cognition? I’ll give you a hint: it’s not so Google employees can write manifestos. Men and women differ in their vulnerability to develop neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases, many of which are also associated with sex differences in the severity of cognitive disruptions and neural manifestations of the disease. For example, women have a greater lifetime risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and major depressive disorder and also greater cognitive disruption with both these diseases compared to men. However, men are more likely to present with greater cognitive disturbances with schizophrenia. Hence, to gain a better understanding of how to effectively treat cognitive symptoms in both men and women, it is important to acknowledge and study differences that might arise between both sexes in response to environmental perturbations. The hippocampus produces new neurons throughout the lifespan in rodents and humans and adult neurogenesis plays a crucial role for pattern separation and for spatial long-term memory. I will show different examples of sex differences in hippocampal neurogenesis under basal conditions but also in response to sex hormones and to spatial training. It is important to establish how neurogenesis in the hippocampus may be involved in hippocampus-dependent cognition in both males and females given the sex differences in cognitive disruptions following diseases that impact the hippocampus. Work in my laboratory has shown that there are sex differences in performance favoring males or females depending on the task and strategy use in spatial navigation and pattern separation. Furthermore, sex and strategy use affected the survival and activity of new neurons in response to memory. We also see multiple examples of sex differences in neurogenesis in the hippocampus that imply differential functional perturbances of neuroplasticity. Finally, I will speak briefly, on preliminary evidence on sex differences in hippocampal neurogenesis using a rodent model of Alzheimer’s disease and how, a uniquely female event, motherhood, can have long lasting effects on the hippocampus and cognition. These findings emphasize the importance of studying biological sex on hippocampal function and neuroplasticity and have implications for neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders that target the hippocampus and affect cognition differentially in women versus men.

"A Taste of Frontier Medicine” considers Sergei Aksakov’s extensive, mid-nineteenth-century memoirs through the lens of a “frontier family narrative,” a genre perhaps more familiar in the American literary setting. While Aksakov’s work has received critical attention for its memoiristic content and attention to nature, the geohistorical specificity of the trilogy’s setting has been overlooked. This is surprising given the recent interest in understanding Russian colonial and imperial experience. A Family Chronicle (1856) and Childhood Years (1856) are not books in which the action could take place anywhere or in some generic pastoral or provincial space. Rather, they are about a specific place – Orenburgskii krai (Bashkiria) – that was a borderland, frontier, and contact zone from the time of its inclusion within Russian imperial space in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries into Aksakov’s lifetime. In “A Taste of Frontier Medicine,” I explore some of the ways in which the eastern Russian border with “Asia” broadly understood frames Aksakov’s work, as well as how these texts make claims about Russian identity as something defined by and in the “hybrid,” Eurasian sphere of the border zone. Discussion will center on two episodes that articulate a critical aspect of Aksakov’s frontier imaginary: the narrator’s mother’s taking of a “kumys cure.” The “kumys cure” serves as a revitalizing moment that establishes “nomadic,” “Asiatic” elements of the frontier as a crucial antidote to both a perceived excess of civilization and, counter-intuitively, to the potential dangers of the frontier zone itself.

Abstract:
The transition from wakefulness to sleep requires a striking alteration in brain activity and behavior. Animals shift from actively responding to and interacting with the environment to a quiescent state in which they are less responsive to the environment and their brain activity shows different oscillatory patterns. How do animals achieve this remarkable wake-to-sleep transition? Prior to sleep onset, animals ranging from bees to humans display a stereotypic repertoire of behaviors. These include finding a safe location, performing hygiene-related behaviors, preparing a space in which to sleep, and adopting a sleeping posture. It has been suggested that the pre-sleep phase is a transitional phase in which engaging in a specific behavioral repertoire de-arouses the brain and facilitates the transition from wakefulness to sleep, yet causal evidence for this premise is lacking. In this talk, I will describe our lab’s recent work to fill this knowledge gap.

Striatal-level structures such as the nucleus accumbens (NAc) and central amygdala (CeA) are capable of generating intense incentive and aversive motivated behaviors (Baumgartner et al. 2020; Warlow et al. 2020). NAc may have two modes for motivation, as inhibition and excitation of NAc can both produce motivated behaviors. For example, NAc medial shell inhibition through AMPA receptor antagonist (DNQX) microinjections can produce both intense eating and defensive behaviors (Baumgartner et al., 2020). Chapter 2 of this dissertation investigates the inhibition hypothesis of accumbens motivation generation by testing whether local pairing of optogenetic excitation can disrupt ‘desire’ and ‘dread’ behaviors generated by DNQX microinjections.

Incentive and aversive motivation generated by NAc and other limbic structures are flexible and able to respond to external stressors. Chapter 3 therefore investigates a previously untested neuronal population in NAc that expresses corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF), a stress-related peptide heavily implicated in aversive motivation and distressing drug-withdrawal states in CeA and bed nucleus of stria terminalis (BNST). Like NAc, the CeA is also capable of producing intense positive and negative motivated behaviors and we investigate the flexibility of incentive or aversive motivation in CRF neurons using new Crh-Cre+ rats to optogenetically stimulate NAc, CeA, or BNST CRF-containing neurons. This work finds that excitation of CRF-expressing neurons is capable of biasing and amplifying motivation for sucrose rewards in both NAc shell and lateral CeA (Baumgartner et al. 2021). Conversely, it also demonstrates that optogenetic excitation of pallidal-like bed nucleus of stria terminalis (BNST) CRF-containing neurons produces only negative affect and aversive motivation, filling the traditional role that CRF has been hypothesized to play in aversive withdrawal and affect (Koob 2013).

Following the demonstrated positive role of NAc and CeA CRF-containing neurons for sucrose rewards, Chapter 4 of this dissertation examines whether this influence on incentive motivation also applies to drug rewards. CRF in CeA and BNST is posited to underlie aversive withdrawal states, causing negative distress that leads to addictive relapse through attempts at hedonic self-medication to relieve this state (Koob 2013). Chapter 4 therefore tests whether optogenetic excitation of CRF neurons in NAc, CeA, and BNST are capable of biasing and amplifying motivation for self-administered intravenous cocaine infusions. Understanding whether CRF-mediated incentive motivation also can drive drug motivation is therefore integral. We find that NAc and CeA CRF-expressing neurons are indeed capable of biasing motivation for cocaine infusions, while rats given the option between BNST CRF-containing neuron-paired cocaine and cocaine alone show no drug escalation or preferences between cocaine options.

Altogether this dissertation demonstrates the limbic generation of intense motivation in structures such as NAc and CeA, and how both incentive and aversive motivation can be modulated by stress and brain CRF systems. The neural mechanisms underlying these different motivational valences provide important insight into cases where motivation can become pathological, such as in addiction, schizophrenia, and other psychological disorders.

The University of Michigan M-LEEaD Center is co-sponsoring an event to mark the 5-year anniversary of the bipartisan legislation called the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act. This reform law was designed to modernize U.S. industrial chemical policy to promote health, but has it lived up to its promise?

Public understanding is limited regarding how exposures to toxic chemicals affect health and how they might be regulated. Unlike pharmaceuticals, industrial and commercial chemicals are rarely tested for safety before they reach the U.S. market. The 1976 TSCA has been widely acknowledged to be a weak and ineffective law, and widespread exposures and harms continue. In the U.S., everyone is exposed to industrial and toxic chemicals, dozens and probably hundreds – well before birth. The amount of chemicals manufactured and imported continues to grow – it is trillions of pounds – and these chemicals remain largely unregulated. At the same time, we have seen an increase in chronic diseases, such as diabetes, autism, and infertility. Not everyone is equally at risk, and a higher burden of disease falls on low wealth communities and communities of color. These health disparities in exposures and health effects are illustrated and exacerbated by COVID.

The amended TSCA gave the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency new requirements and authorities. The public health impact points to the need for the U.S. EPA to fully use its new powers to evaluate all risks from hazardous chemicals and set policies which protect health and are accountable to high-risk communities. Preventive actions are urgently needed.

Abstract:
Individuals use cues in their environment to make decisions about optimal life history strategies in changing environments. Recent work has identified hormones as key regulatory molecules to transduce external environmental cues into adaptive behavioral responses. However, most work has focused on the role of a single environmental cue and its relevant hormonal pathways, despite the fact that individuals likely must integrate cues from multiple sources to make adaptive decisions in the wild. Here, I investigate how two important environmental cues, social density and food availability are integrated to influence life-history plasticity in red squirrels. We used long term data to identify sources of variation in reproductive traits. I then explore a potential hormonal mechanism underlying this variation. I will discuss my preliminary findings and explore future directions for understanding how multiple hormone pathways interact to elicit behavioral responses in the wild.
