The Automotive Research Center is a U.S. Army Center of Excellence for the modeling and simulation of ground vehicles, led by the University of Michigan. We focus on basic scientific problems associated with management of power and energy within vehicles, mobility and survivability of the complete vehicle system, including the human operator.

Each year, we bring together members of the automotive research community from across academia, government and industry to share our latest research developments. It is an opportunity to discuss Army-relevant efforts, and to leverage and transfer our efforts to industry.

The event is open to all and is free of charge. We cordially invite you to join our community of dedicated researchers at this event.

International Perspectives on Privacy and Free Expression: Concepts, Conflicts, Consequences (September 22, 2017 8:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/43217 43217-9739767@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 22, 2017 8:30am
Location: South Hall
Organized By: University of Michigan Law School

This conference will consider the varying, and to some extent conflicting, international perspectives on privacy and its points of tension with freedom of expression. We will begin with foundational concerns of legal theory: How is privacy conceived of and defined in various legal systems? To what extent does (and should) privacy serve as a limiting principle on freedom of expression? We will then move to more pragmatic questions about how these issue play out on the ground. Do heads of state have privacy rights that limit what can be said about them by the media and citizens? How do individuals with privacy concerns navigate the varying protections offered by different legal regimes? What challenges are posed to media and online entities that must determine how to comply with differing standards?

Mediating the Modern: Sound/Image/Text
2017 Graduate Student Conference
Germanic Languages & Literatures at the University of Michigan
September 29-30
Keynote Speaker: Sean Franzel (University of Missouri)
Presented in Conjunction with the Annual Grilk Lecture: Celia Applegate (Vanderbilt)

During the 1980s German media theorist Friedrich Kittler published a series of highly influential books and essays outlining a materialist approach to literary and cultural history, one freed from hermeneutic fantasies of immediacy and focused instead on the medial conditions that made thought possible in the first place, the hardware that enabled it to be recorded, processed, and transmitted. Over the last few decades, scholars in German, Film, Music, and Literary Studies, and beyond, have continued to expand on Kittler’s initial insights into the material nature of sound, image, and text, and the medial operations they entail. Both borrowing from and looking beyond Kittler, this conference seeks to explore productive points of contact between contemporary media theory, on the one hand, and the literary and cultural histories of mediation, remediation, and intermediation, on the other.

From Herder’s origins of language and Kant’s public sphere to Nazi propaganda and Siegert’s Kulturtechniken , media and mediation have remained central concepts for understanding German modernities. Social and political transformations, in conjunction with technological innovations around 1800/1900/2000 exerted pressure on existing notions of sound, image, and text and vice versa: this feedback loop serves as the springboard for our conference, “Mediating the Modern: Sound/Image/Text.”

Sean Franzel of the University of Missouri will give the conference keynote address on Friday afternoon, September 29. Preceding the conference, participants will also have the opportunity to attend the annual Werner Grilk Lecture in German Studies, given by Celia Applegate, on Thursday evening, September 28. Location: Angell Hall
Organized By: Interdepartmental Program in Ancient Mediterranean Art and Archaeology

This interdisciplinary conference focuses on the second king of Rome, Numa Pompilius – the foundational figure of Roman religion who also enjoyed a long and rich nachleben in Western thought, literature, and art. For centuries, Numa has personified the good monarch and emblemized how religion should (or, in some cases, should not) function in society. An international group of speakers will consider Numa from every angle, beginning with archaeological evidence through to his presentation in ancient literature, to his role in Renaissance thought and early modern literature. The event is free and open to the public.

FinTech Risks and Opportunities: An Interdisciplinary Approach (November 16, 2017 8:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/46646 46646-10569822@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 16, 2017 8:30am
Location: Hutchins Hall
Organized By: University of Michigan Law School

This two-day event will bring together a wide range of researchers, policymakers, students, and
practitioners from various disciplines.

Financial technology, or FinTech, can be traced back to the introduction of the telegraph in the 1860s. Between then and the 1980s, most FinTech advancements were record-keeping and data systems found in the back offices of financial institutions, out of sight of the public. As internet technology became more available, however, FinTech evolved rapidly. Financial firms digitized their processes, and companies began introducing consumer-facing products such as online banking and PayPal.

Today, FinTech continues to disrupt and to evolve, not only in how financial products and services are delivered, but who delivers them. Regulators and market participants face challenges in
understanding and balancing the benefits of FinTech against potential risks. Innovation helps catalyze growth and new opportunities while generating new risks. Regulatory structures in place could fail to accommodate changes in the financial marketplace. Regulators may overreact to new technologies, stifling innovation and locking in old forms of doing business. At the same time, regulatory complacency can have disastrous results, permitting the buildup of systemic risk or widespread consumer harms.

This conference will explore methodologies that the private sector, researchers, and policymakers
can use harness the upside potential of financial innovation while reducing the downside risks.

BECOMING DIGITAL CONFERENCE (February 2, 2018 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/49077 49077-11375458@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 2, 2018 9:00am
Location: Art and Architecture Building
Organized By: A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning

Architecture is always becoming digital. To become digital is to exist in a digital world. It is an ontological state that tacitly recognizes pervasive technology, computational logic, and digital aesthetics as the background condition to everyday life. To become digital is to be situated in a context where everything from screen to stone exists as data and matter, where habits of mind forged within the digital environment are constantly transferred to the analog world. For architecture, this has signaled a profound paradigm shift that is largely complete and yet conspicuously unaccounted. Digital technology entered architectural discourse in a wave of futurist prognostication, heady formalist trajectories, and overt avant-garde agendas. Positivist rationales and a fervent belief in the intrinsic merits of technological progress reigned among the varied proponents of early digital architecture, alongside an embrace of the capacities of computation to address cultural and organizational complexity. In these early years, the digital was foregrounded as both topic and technique. In contrast, contemporary architectural practice engages the digital as ubiquitous and foundational. Today the digital is ambient, environmental. It is a dull hum that emanates from every corner of our increasingly constructed world, constituting the material, conceptual, and experiential context of any architectural project.

Reflecting on the status of the digital in contemporary architecture demands renewed critical attention towards the ways architects work and the products of our labor. Today, our discipline’s waning fascination with digitally-enabled complexity and progress is being replaced with a sometimes blasé embrace of expedient digital tools from the Google image search to Rhino’s “Make 2D” command. Screenshot aesthetics and deadpan digital representations abound, delivering a glancing wink to those in the know, and constituting a new internal discourse for contemporary designers based on the expedient circulation of digital images. But as tendencies within our discipline assume the temporality of the meme, the facile nature with which they are adopted often belies the significance of their appearance. Today, digital technology doesn’t simply enable architects to represent the “real,” it is intricately intertwined with the real itself. Our methods of design are evermore connected on a computational level to our methods of dissemination, communication, and social networking, and indeed to those of our culture at large. This nascent condition presents new possibilities for architectural speculation, representation, and for our discipline’s potential impact in an increasingly digital world.

Becoming Digital is a yearlong project that seeks to unpack our contemporary digital moment. Over the course of the year, Taubman College faculty and students, along with invited guests, will design, debate, and reflect upon the current state of the digital in architecture. In the Fall semester, three architecture offices, all critically engaging digital technology through their practice, will lead workshops with students and engage in public conversations around the project’s theme. The Winter semester will include an exhibition of student work, a conference, and a series of presentations by Taubman College faculty. All events will attempt to grapple with computation as the pervasive context in which we live and work, and through that deeper understanding to reveal a capacity to influence ubiquitous digitality through design.

All events will attempt to grapple with computation as the pervasive context in which we live and work, and through that deeper understanding to reveal a capacity to influence ubiquitous digitality through design.

The 2018 U-M Management Conference provides a forum for the university’s managers, at all levels, to learn best practices, hone managerial skills and increase self-knowledge. It includes a keynote, breakouts and a panel session.

Keynote Speaker:
Jacob Morgan

Keynote:
The Future of Work is all About Employee Experience

We invest a great deal of time and money to improve employee engagement, yet our efforts often seem to miss the mark. How can that be? Jacob Morgan, one of the world’s foremost authorities on the future of work and employee engagement, uses his ongoing research of 252 organizations to show how short term “adrenaline shot” programs such as job sharing or working from home, aren’t necessarily the answer. He will demonstrate how the world’s top organizations are redesigning work around their people by focusing on three environments: culture, technology, and the physical workspace. He will share why employee experience is the next big area of investment, what the top organizations are doing, and how you can go about creating an Experiential Organization.

Location: Michigan League
Organized By: School for Environment and Sustainability

On behalf of the MUSE Organizing Committee*, you are cordially invited to participate in the 2018 Michigan University-wide Sustainability and Environment (MUSE) Conference.

- The annual flagship event of the MUSE Initiative, the MUSE Conference provides a unique venue for sharing research, building new connections, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among all members of the University of Michigan community engaged in the broad range of sustainability and environment-related research. We welcome the involvement of U-M graduate students, as well as University leadership, faculty, and research fellows from all disciplines, including those in arts, humanities, engineering, and natural and social sciences. The 2018 MUSE Conference will consist of interdisciplinary lectures by speakers including Susan Scotti Parrish, author of The Flood Year 1927: A Cultural History, and Claire Vaye Watkins, author of Gold Fame Citrus, as well as panel discussions, a poster session, network-and skill-building workshops, and a public keynote address and reception at Zingerman’s Greyline event space.

- Participants will have opportunities to present both preliminary and final research findings. Thematic facilitated workshops will engage participants at all career stages in structured collaboration and discussion about emerging developments and debates in cross-cutting research topics.

- Please consider participating in the 2018 MUSE Conference by submitting a short abstract. Abstracts on topics related to sustainability and environment may include (but are not limited to) human behavior, environmental history, policymaking and governance, corporate social and environmental responsibility, public health, built environment and infrastructure, land use, energy, water, climate, and ecosystems. Themed interdisciplinary sessions will be designed once abstracts have been reviewed by a selection committee. We encourage submissions to present either specific research outcomes or broader themes related to your research interests.

- Both oral and poster presentation opportunities are available. Short-form oral presentations may be used to share preliminary results or brief research summaries, while longer presentations allow for more depth. When submitting an abstract, you may also opt-in to facilitate a workshop discussion and/or be considered for a brief Up-goer 5-style presentation at the public reception (explaining your research using the “ten hundred” most-used English words).

- The deadline for abstract submission is Thursday, November 9. Please see link for abstract registration. For more information, please go to our conference website:

A More Human Dwelling Place: Reimagining the Racialized Architecture of America (February 16, 2018 9:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/48424 48424-11233230@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 16, 2018 9:30am
Location: Hutchins Hall
Organized By: University of Michigan Law School

Presented by the Michigan Journal of Race & Law, "A More Human Dwelling Place: Reimagining the Racialized Architecture of America" is a symposium happening on February 16 and 17 at the University of Michigan Law School.

Over two days, we will examine five archetypal spaces in America: homes and neighborhoods, schools, courthouses, prisons, and borders. The symposium endeavors to consider the ways in which these spaces have become increasingly racialized, diagnose how that racialization impedes their basic functioning, and reimagine these spaces at their best, and our world as a more human dwelling place. James Baldwin gave us this name, embedded in his imperative “to illuminate that darkness, blaze roads through vast forests, so that we will not, in all our doing, lose sight of its purpose, which is, after all, to make the world a more human dwelling place.”

The symposium will bring together individuals working to better these spaces, hailing from many disciplines, including law, history, sociology, journalism, literature, architecture, urban planning, and visual art. Together, we hope to conceptualize forgotten or not yet dreamed of alternatives. Through discussions of projects already realized and ideas not yet concrete, we will collectively inch toward the world we wish to inhabit.

The symposium is free and open to the public. All are welcome.

She is the author of the award-winning book, The Presidency in Black & White, and her latest book, At Mama’s Knee: Race in Black & White (December 2016). Ryan is a graduate of Morgan State University and was awarded an honorary doctorate from her alma mater in 2017.

U-M History of Art Conference: Process in Modern and Contemporary Islamic Art (April 14, 2018 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/50859 50859-11885023@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, April 14, 2018 9:00am
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

This program is free and open to the public. Seating is first come, first served.
Islamic art history is an object-centered discipline. Its subject matter generally fits into a frame, vitrine, or photograph. Recent scholarship has departed from these rigid image boundaries, investigating the affective and performative qualities of Islamic artworks. This conference takes the next step and explores the significance of process itself in art-making, in time-based art forms such as performance art and moving images, as well as in conceptualizations of art as Islamic. The papers address Islamic art and related practices of the twentieth and twenty-first century from China, South Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North America. The angle on the aesthetic value of process thereby opens new perspectives on how artists have shaped, claimed, and reclaimed Islamic art histories and futures.

The conference includes presentations from scholars, curators, and artists: Ali Nobil Ahmad (Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient), Charlotte Bank (independent scholar, Berlin), Özde Çeliktemel-Thomen (University College London), Timur Hammond (Syracuse University), Nadia Kurd (Thunder Bay Gallery), Emily Neumeier (Ohio State University), and Elizabeth Rauh (University of Michigan). Martina Becker (University of Michigan) will introduce the conference theme and co-moderate the concluding roundtable together with Iftikhar Dadi (Cornell University).

For the full conference program, please visit the U-M History of Art website.

Human Trafficking Symposium (April 25, 2018 11:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/51892 51892-12283033@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, April 25, 2018 11:30am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Division of Public Safety and Security DPSS

Attendees will gain an overview of what human trafficking is and how they can help victims that they may encounter in their field of practice, with a particular emphasis on healthcare settings. We will explore the root causes of human trafficking and our role in perpetuating and combating the underlying causes. We will take a critical perspective on what it means to help a victim of trafficking and well-meaning interventions, which may unwittingly cause the individual’s arrest or deportation. Further, we will examine guiding principles for successful engagement with this population, including trauma-informed care, cultural awareness, and harm reduction. Finally, we will hear about local resources that providers can use if they suspect a client is a victim of human trafficking.

Speakers and panelist include:
- Elizabeth Campbell, JD; University of Michigan Law School, Human Trafficking Clinic
- Nicole McGee, PhD; Victim Assistance Program, FBI
- Wendi-Jo Wendt, MD; Michigan Medicine, Pediatrics-Emergency Medicine
- Carmen Uresti, LMSW; Michigan Medicine, Care Management, Social Work
- Kaitlin Deslatte, University of Michigan Police Department, Special Victims Unit

Please register in advance. We ask participants to arrive at 11:30 for sign-in.

Social Work and Nursing continuing education credits will be offered. Please contact emattila@umich.edu if you have any questions.

We hope to see you there!
