Arts at Michigan is looking for enthusiastic and friendly students who have an interest in the arts that they want to share! Arts Ambassadors are unpaid volunteers who serve as the bridge between the arts and the U-M student body. As an Arts Ambassador you'll learn about the arts both on campus and in the community, meet local artists, and help promote arts events and activities.

Being a part of the Arts Ambassadors program is an extremely rewarding and fun experience! As an Arts Ambassador, you will be responsible for attending weekly (virtual) meetings, taking leadership roles in organizing arts events, collaborating with other Arts Ambassadors to engage students in the arts, and most importantly, spreading the word about the vast arts community at U-M!

Want to learn more about Arts Ambassadors? Join us for a virtual Mass Meeting on Tuesday, September 15 at 6pm.

The application deadline for Fall 2020 is September 20.

In this workshop, participants will explore the relationship between their passions and their life choices. Using writing and movement, participants are invited to develop their own strategies for responding to the New Now.

Omi Osun Joni L. Jones’ work is committed to exploring strategies for promoting healthy communities through personal Joy. In this new virtual series, performers and scholars reflect on how performance is being used to respond to the political, social, health and environmental crises that we face in this moment. Each guest will give a 30 minute presentation, and then engage in 30 minutes of Q&A.

If you require an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact the Center for World Performance Studies, at 734-936-2777. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

When Ken Fischer retired after 30 years as president of the University Musical Society in 2017, many of his friends and colleagues repeatedly told him, “Ken, you should write a book! You have so many great stories.”

Ken took that advice, and we’re delighted to announce that Everybody In, Nobody Out: Inspiring Community at Michigan’s University Musical Society is now available from University of Michigan Press, with a wonderful foreword by Wynton Marsalis.

During this virtual book launch, John U. Bacon, Ann Arbor author, speaker, tv and radio commentator, and longtime friend of Ken’s, will interview Ken about his book, highlighting some of the wonderful stories Ken shares from his three decades at UMS and a lifetime in the arts.

This book launch is co-presented by Literati Bookstore and University of Michigan Press Great Lakes.

Giving Voice to a Foxtrot from Auschwitz- Birkenau (September 25, 2020 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/75513 75513-19515157@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 25, 2020 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

In November 2018, the Contemporary Directions Ensemble, directed by Oriol Sans, performed a foxtrot called “The Most Beautiful Time of Life” (Die schönste Zeit des Lebens) to a sold- out audience at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance. Audience-goers were treated to a rare glimpse of this piece as it had last been performed – more than 75 years ago in a far different setting. Based on a manuscript Patricia Hall researched at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, this piece was arranged and copied by concentration camp prisoners and had not been performed since 1942 or 1943.

The School of Music, Theatre & Dance created a video highlighting the project and its significance, garnering U-M a Michigan Emmy in 2019. Patricia gave interviews on National Public Radio, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and the BBC, and an Associated Press story highlighting this project appeared in Detroit Free Press, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and more than 1100 other news outlets in 22 countries.

During her talk, Instructor Patricia Hall will be describing the process of preparing this concert—from manuscript to performance. She will also talk about her most recent work in the Collections Department of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum.

This study group will he held on September 25.

Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Zoom Webinar: "Cold War Counterpublics and the Ghosts of Pan-Asianism: The Japanese Matsuyama Ballet’s 1958 White-Haired Girl Tour in China" (September 29, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/76122 76122-19663558@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, September 29, 2020 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies

The Fall 2020 lecture series will be only available on-line as a Zoom webinar.

In 1958, the Matsuyama Ballet of Japan toured the first ever ballet adaptation of the classic Chinese land reform opera "The White-Haired Girl" in China. Examining Chinese-language sources such as newspaper and magazine reviews and rare original programs held in the University of Michigan Asia Library's Chinese Dance Collection, Professor Wilcox reconstructs the circulation and reception of this work in China, arguing that the production represented an attempt to create a leftist Sino-Japanese counter-public at a time of Cold War tensions between the two countries. She suggests that the Japanese ballet dancers' cross-ethnic performances of Chinese characters critically reconfigured pre-1945 Japanese imperialist discourses of pan-Asianism, leading them to be interpreted as acts of inter-ethnic solidarity in the context of 1950s Asian internationalism.

Emily Wilcox is Associate Professor of Modern Chinese Studies in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Michigan. She is the author of "Revolutionary Bodies: Chinese Dance and the Socialist Legacy" (University of California Press, 2019, winner of the de la Torre Bueno Prize from the Dance Studies Association) and co-editor of "Corporeal Politics: Dancing East Asia" (University of Michigan Press, 2020). Her articles, in English and Chinese, have appeared in "China Perspectives," "Inter-Asia Cultural Studies," "The Journal of Asian Studies," positions: asia critique, "TDR: The Drama Review," "Asian Theatre Journal," "The Journal of the Beijing Dance Academy," "Dance Review," and other venues.

"In times of turmoil and transformation—a locked-down present and an uncertain future—how do artists share wisdom and experience? How do they foster growth? As a vocalist singing in multiples languages, as a composer straddling genres and styles, as a musician playing instruments whose histories span continents and centuries, and as a dancer and writer of compelling grace and power, Jen Shyu transforms wisdom from masters and stories gathered from communities around the world into fresh and original expressions. Her work off the bandstand focuses on fighting inequity and helping create new mentorship networks" (Larry Blumenfeld). During this session, Shyu will also perform new works composed during the lockdown period that are centered around quarantine as well as the Black Lives Matter movement.

Jen Shyu ("Shyu" pronounced "Shoe" in English, Chinese name: 徐秋雁, Pinyin: Xúqiūyàn) is a groundbreaking, multilingual vocalist, composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, dancer, 2019 Guggenheim Fellow, 2019 United States Artists Fellow, 2016 Doris Duke Artist, and was voted 2017 Downbeat Critics Poll Rising Star Female Vocalist. Born in Peoria, Illinois, to Taiwanese and East Timorese immigrant parents, Shyu is widely regarded for her virtuosic singing and riveting stage presence, carving out her own beyond-category space in the art world. She has performed with or sung the music of such musical innovators as Nicole Mitchell, Anthony Braxton, Wadada Leo Smith, Steve Coleman, Vijay Iyer, Bobby Previte, Chris Potter, Michael Formanek and David Binney. Shyu has performed her own music on prestigious world stages such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Rubin Museum of Art, Ojai Festival, Ringling International Arts Festival, Asia Society, Roulette, Blue Note, Bimhuis, Salihara Theater, National Gugak Center, National Theater of Korea and at festivals worldwide.

A Stanford University graduate in opera with classical violin and ballet training, Shyu had already won many piano competitions and performed the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto (3rd mvmt.) with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra by the age of 13. She speaks 10 languages and has studied traditional music and dance in Cuba, Taiwan, Brazil, China, South Korea, East Timor and Indonesia, conducting extensive research which culminated in her 2014 stage production Solo Rites: Seven Breaths, directed by renowned Indonesian filmmaker Garin Nugroho.

Shyu has won commissions and support from NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, MAP Fund, US-Japan Creative Artists Fellowship from Japan-US Friendship Commission and National Endowment for the Arts, Jerome Foundation, Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works, Exploring the Metropolis, New Music USA, Jazz Gallery, and Roulette, as well as fellowships from the Fulbright Scholar Program, Civitella Ranieri Foundation, Asian Cultural Council, Hermitage Artist Retreat, Yaddo, MacDowell Colony, Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Korean Ministry of Sports, Culture, and Tourism.

Shyu has produced seven albums as a leader, including the first female-led and vocalist-led album Pi Recordings has released, Synastry (Pi 2011), with co-bandleader and bassist Mark Dresser. Her critically acclaimed Sounds and Cries of the World (Pi 2015) landed on many best-of-2015 lists, including those of The New York Times, The Nation, and NPR. Her latest album Song of Silver Geese (Pi 2017) is receiving rave reviews and was also included on The New York Times’ Best Albums of 2017.

In the new virtual series, PERFORMING THE MOVEMENT, PERFORMING THE MOMENT, Center for World Performance Studies invites performers and scholars from diverse disciplines to reflect on how performance is being used to respond to the political, social, health and environmental crises that we face at this moment. Each guest will give a 30 minute presentation, and then engage in 30 minutes of Q&A. Sessions will take place over Zoom and require advance registration. You can read about the panelists, register for these events, find recommended reading and resources and/or request recordings of past events at https://lsa.umich.edu/world-performance.

In this session, Cardona Otero will depart from his most recent performance art piece, Taxonomía of a Spicy Espécimen, to engage in a conversation about his work in the arts and in education. In Cardona’s words: “I’m a work in progress. As well, more and more I am understanding my performative art and pedagogy as works in progress. I am affected by this pandemic racism, this antiblackness, this sexism, and this state of white supremacy; and this infection affects what and how I craft and enact.”

Javier Cardona Otero is a performing artist, critical educator, and facilitator of art experiences as education. His artistic scholarship, which has been presented throughout the Caribbean, Latin America and the United States, seeks to critically investigate sociocultural capitals particularly regarded to issues of race, gender, and the environment. His work is interdisciplinary and intersectional, focusing on art-making as research and embodied artwork as pedagogy. Currently, Javier is a Curriculum and Instruction PhD student in the Arts Education Program at Indiana University-Bloomington.

In this new virtual series, Center for World Performance Studies invites performers and scholars from diverse disciplines to reflect on how performance is being used to respond to the political, social, health and environmental crises that we face at this moment.

If you require an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact the Center for World Performance Studies, at 734-936-2777. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

T. Ayo Alston teaches and practices a signature theatrical style of West African drum and dance culture that captures the strength and power of women and community. Ayo is the founder, executive director, composer, and choreographer of Ayodele Drum and Dance, a performance training organization created for women to affirm their self-confidence and strength. Through Ayodele, she has performed, educated, fostered interpersonal healing, and created artistic work from a foundation of traditional African cultures fused with contemporary dance styles.

Throughout her career Ayo has taught, choreographed, and performed at schools and universities locally and nationally, as well as in African and Brazilian countries, as an independent artist and as a member of other companies and organizations, such as Dance Africa, Drum Cafe West, Le Bagatae Company of Guinea, Les Ballets Africans, and Muntu Dance Theatre.

In the last two years Ayo has been focused on fine-tuning and sharing her ability to compose music on African instruments, such as the kalimba. This resulted in her accepting a role as a lead actress in and musical composer for Mies Julie at Victory Gardens Theater and as a composer and musician for The Lion King Jr. at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM).

Ayo serves as an adjunct professor at Columbia College Chicago and on the Dance faculty at Chicago High School of the Arts. She also has developed drum and dance programs that are thriving in prestigious schools, such as Jones College Prep and Walter Payton College Prep, where Ayodele has trained dancers to teach and gain professional artistic skills and experience.

Peggy Choy’s lifetime of dance has become a means to frame and navigate the dangerous times in which we live. While life and our environment can inform dance, Choy also examines the converse, that dance can inform our life and environment. Join Professor Choy for a live discussion of her own dance stories—both spoken and performed.

Peggy Myo-Young Choy’s dance alchemy of focused mind and moving body is fueled by Asian dance, martial arts, as well as urban vernacular dance forms. Choy’s seminal solos include, “Comfort Woman” and “Wild Rice.” She has also created solos around the themes—“Sea Series” and “Blood Series.” Her women-centered stories created since the mid-1990s, integrate her foundations in Korean dance, Javanese dance, and martial arts.

Choy is an associate professor of Dance and Asian-American Studies at University of Wisconsin-Madison and is director of PEGGY CHOY DANCE company. Her company has performed around the world—at New York’s Dance Theater Workshop, La Mama E.T.C., and Alvin Ailey Studio, DC’s Kennedy Center, Dance Place and the Smithsonian Institution, Kennedy Theater in Honolulu, Utan Kayu in Jakarta, Seoul Art Center in Korea, Danza Teatro Retazos in Havana, and Baráčnická Rychta in Prague, and the Korean Cultural Center in Berlin.

Choy's national and international awards include an NEA/Atlantic Center for the Arts fellowship, Danspace Project's Commissioning Initiative, Princeton and Cornell University commissions, and commissions from the Kintari Foundation, Seoul Selection, and Cafe Intarsia.

This work was supported by the Core University Program for Korean Studies through the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea and Korean Studies Promotion Service of the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS-2016-OLU-2240001).

Visual Aids Day With(out) Art 2020: TRANSMISSIONS, Live Screening (November 30, 2020 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/79625 79625-20432423@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, November 30, 2020 6:00pm
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

.

December 1 marks World AIDS Day, as well as Day With(out) Art 2020, a yearly event presented by Visual AIDS marking the global impact of HIV/AIDS. Visual AIDS is a New York-based non-profit that utilizes art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue, supporting HIV+ artists, and preserving a legacy, because AIDS is not over. This year, Visual AIDS is presenting a series of short films titled TRANSMISSIONS, which will premiere on November 30 at 6pm EST as part of a special online screening event hosted by Visual AIDS. A live Q&A with the commissioned artists will follow the screening. Beginning December 1, the video program will be available to view online at visualaids.org/transmissions.

RSVP here to receive updates about the live event    Then, consider submitting your own art to the SEC blog! You can relate your work to the topic of HIV/AIDS awareness in any way you see fit, but some prompts that you can use:
How does HIV/AIDS awareness and other public health issues affect various groups differently? How does the HIV/AIDS crisis continue internationally today or relate to other current public health issues? How has viewing the films in the TRANSMISSIONS series changed my personal view of HIV/AIDS? How do people reconcile with the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS diagnoses?
Your work can be in any artistic medium — painting, poetry, dance, collage, music, film, creative writing, sculpture, photography and more are all welcome. HOW TO SUBMIT:
Put your work together in an accessible digital file format — .pdf, .jpg, .png, .mov, .mp4, a website or Google Drive link. Send your submissions to ummastudentcouncil@umich.edu with your name and the title of the piece. (Optional) Include a short description of your piece as it relates to HIV/AIDS awareness or the films of TRANSMISSIONS series.
You can submit at any time beforehand, but please have all submissions in by Thursday, December 10th, at 5 pm EST. Any questions? Ask ummastudentcouncil@umich.edu!

Student programming at UMMA is generously supported by the University of Michigan Credit Union Arts Adventures Program, UMMA's Lead Sponsor for Student and Family Engagement.

This year, Visual AIDS is presenting a series of short films titled TRANSMISSIONS, which, beginning on December 1, is available to view online at visualaids.org/transmissions.

After you watch the films, consider submitting your own art to the SEC blog!
Please have all submissions in by Thursday, December 10th, at 5 pm EST. Any questions? Ask ummastudentcouncil@umich.edu!

Student programming at UMMA is generously supported by the University of Michigan Credit Union Arts Adventures Program, UMMA's Lead Sponsor for Student and Family Engagement.

Presented by Dunham’s Data: Katherine Dunham and Digital Methods for Dance Historical Inquiry (Harmony Bench, Kate Elswit, Antonio Jimenez-Mavillard, Tia-Monique Uzor)

How do you begin to understand the extent of a particular individual’s global influence on her field? Especially if that influence travels through performance from body to body and place to place in the middle of the twentieth century? You look for data in any and all documents you can get your hands on! That’s what Dunham’s Data did -- they use performance programs, notes written on the backs of envelopes, provisional travel plans, and more to create structured data with which they can better understand the impact of African-American choreographer, teacher, and activist Katherine Dunham. The team behind Dunham’s Data will walk through key datasets and other outcomes from the project, to discuss how this fits into their ongoing research on the questions and problems that make the analysis and visualization of data meaningful for dance historical inquiry. This session will be of interest to those studying the performing arts, but, more broadly, to anyone interesting in thinking about data in new and creative ways!

This webinar is free and open to the public. The recording and slides will be sent to all registrants following the live webinar.

This webinar is part of Love Data Week 2021. Please feel free to share this webinar widely. More information about Love Data Week is available at https://myumi.ch/ICPSRLDW21.

Say Her Name…Too

This will be a discussion moderated by Dr. Antonio C. Cuyler and Professor Lawrence M. Jackson about the spaces that lie between Dance and Social Activism. This event will feature a screen dance viewing of Dance artist Lawrence M. Jackson’s work, “Say Her Name…Too." A short screen dance, this work will combine cinematic elements with choreography and explores the lives of 5 Black women who died at the hands of law enforcement. The goal of this work is to bring awareness to the often-invisible names and stories of Black women and girls who have been victimized by racist police violence. Black women have been killed by the police at alarming rates, though we rarely hear their names. Knowing their names is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for lifting up their stories which in turn provides a much clearer view of the wide-ranging circumstances that make Black women’s bodies disproportionately subject to police violence. To lift up their stories, and illuminate police violence against Black women, we need to know who they are, how they lived, and why they suffered at the hands of police…this film aims to do just that…

Both the exhibition and the performances are designed to be viewed from the Thayer St. windows of the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.

Performance Times: March 13: 4:30-5pm, 6-6:30pm, 7:30-8pm.

Working with The G—ray Area, prepares us for removing and releasing public pains accumulated through insensitive norms of togetherness. The heterotopic transmedia space is an open journal of personal and familial celebrations of the sensual body by Ava Ansari. It chooses Yasmine Diaz’s For Your Eyes Only as a safe space for revisiting Ava’s somatic, sonic, and scenic celebratory memories from the Iran-Iraq war (1980-88) airstrikes, bedroom shadow dances, underground rules of thumb, a party arrest in Tehran, her planet IranUS, and a recent visit to Saturn. In March 2001, the University of Michigan Center for World Performance Studies (CWPS) celebrated its grand opening, inviting the community to participate in an evening of lectures, performances and food at the International Institute. As part of the ongoing virtual celebration of this milestone, CWPS invites four esteemed U-M faculty members to reflect on the Center’s founding, its contributions to increasing the diversity of arts and research at University of Michigan, and to imagine the possibilities for the next twenty years.

Kwasi Ampene, Associate Professor in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies, is a scholar and practitioner of ethnomusicology. He specializes in the rich musical traditions of the Akan people of West Africa. His research interests include the performing arts as individually and collectively created and experienced, the performance of historical and social memory, politics, ideologies, values, and religious philosophy in Akan court music. Professor Ampene’s latest book, *Asante Court Music and Verbal Arts in Ghana: The Porcupine and the Gold Stool*, was published on June 30th, 2020 by Routledge. Dr. Ampene was Director of the Center for World Performance Studies from 2011-2016.

In this virtual series, Center for World Performance Studies invites performers and scholars from diverse disciplines to reflect on how performance is being used to respond to the political, social, health and environmental crises that we face at this moment. For this session, Dr. Ramón H. Rivera-Servera will discuss his recent research in Puerto Rico, including an innovative outreach initiative to assist Puerto Rican artists in the aftermath of hurricanes Maria and Irma. Participants can learn about this research ahead of the session by visiting the Mellon Foundation blog: https://mellon.org/shared-experiences-blog/after-storm/

Ramón H. Rivera-Servera is chair of the Department of Performance Studies and the Department of Theatre in the School of Communication at Northwestern University, and was recently appointed as the next dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on 20th and 21st Century performance in North America and the Caribbean with special emphasis on the ways categories of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality are negotiated across national borders through migratory circuits of circulation and exchange. His work documents a wide array of performance practices ranging from theatre and concert dance to social dance, popular music, fashion, and speech.

He is author of *Performing Queer Latinidad: Dance, Sexuality, Politics* (University of Michigan Press, 2012), a study of the role performance played in the development of Latina/o queer publics in the United States from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s.

He is currently completing a book manuscript, *Reggaetón’s Queer Turn: Sexuality, Abstraction, and Contemporary Art in the Circum-Caribbean*, which pursues feminist and queer uptakes of the popular music and dance cultures of reggaetón in circum-Caribbean contemporary art to theorize the role of black aesthetics in the sexual cultural politics of the Spanish speaking Caribbean and its diaspora. He is also conducting fieldwork and archival research towards two other projects: *Exhibiting Performance: Race, Museum Cultures, and the Live Event*, which looks at the ways race has been collected and exhibited in North America and the Caribbean since the mid-1990s and *Choreographing the Latina/o Post-Modern: Puerto Rican Moves in the New York Dance Avant-Garde*, a cultural history of Puerto Rican participation in the New York City experimental dance scene since the 1980s.

For two weeks every February, Trinity Laban’s usual creative atmosphere gets supercharged. There are no lectures, no classes, no assignments. That’s because it’s time for CoLab, their eccentric two‑week festival of creativity and innovation. For the 2021 CoLab, 10 SMTD students spent a week at Trinity Laban working alongside students to devise and perform interdisciplinary works through the city of London. Join SMTD faculty supervisor Jonathan Kuuskoski and a member of the Trinity Laban team to learn more about the CoLab experience, understand how SMTD students are selected for this opportunity, and share our hopes for what SMTD participation might look like in the February 2022.
