Presentation 1
The Learning Health (Record) System

Speaker:
Philip R.O. Payne, PhD, FACMI, FAMIA, FAIMBE, FIAHSI
Janet and Bernard Becker Professor and Director, Institute for Informatics (I2), Associate Dean for Health information and Data Science, Chief Data Scientist, at Washington University in St. Louis

This presentation will explore the ways in Biomedical Data Science and Informatics research are helping to realize the potential of EHR technologies in the context of creating an LHS, from the optimization of workflow and human factors, to the generation of reproducible and systematic clinical phenotypes, to the delivery of emergent knowledge to both providers and patients via advance clinical decision support systems.

Presentation 2
Techniques and Challenges for EHR Phenotyping

Speaker:
Lisa Bastarache, MS
Research Associate Professor Department of Biomedical Informatics,
Vanderbilt University

Electronic health records (EHR) contain a wealth of real world data that can be used for research purposes. However, extracting phenotype information from EHRs can be challenging. EHR phenotyping can be divided into two types: (1) Fast phenotyping which seeks to capture a broad swath of the medical phenome, and is often accomplished using coded EHR data (e.g. billing codes) and (2) slow phenotyping that seeks to achieve high precision and recall for a single phenotype, and often uses multiple EHR data types (e.g. medications, text, lab results). This talk will describe specific use-cases for both fast and slow phenotyping, and review challenges that are commonly encountered in creating research-grade EHR phenotypes.

Organized By: Center for Global and Intercultural Study

Students who are seeking international experiences as a way to explore their own roots are considered heritage seekers. Their experiences with a certain culture give them a unique perspective and can serve as an advantage in their immersion experience, and while most heritage seekers are invested emotionally and intellectually in their host country/homeland, some may neglect to consider the negative impacts of their perceived familiarity with the culture. Join us for this special brief where we discuss this somewhat invisible identity and the benefits and barriers a heritage seeker can encounter while navigating abroad. RSVP @ https://myumi.ch/88rvK

Germine Awad's scholarship is characterized by three interrelated areas of inquiry: prejudice and discrimination, identity and acculturation, and more recently, body image among women of color. She has also written in the area of multicultural research methodology. The majority of her research is guided by the questions “What factors lead to discrimination against ethnic minorities?” and “What impacts perceptions of experienced discrimination?” The two populations that she has primarily focused on are Arab/Middle Eastern Americans and African Americans. Although overt discrimination towards ethnic minorities has decreased over the years, the practice of more covert, subtle forms of prejudice remains. The events of September 11, 2001, however, reintroduced more explicit forms of prejudice towards Arab/Middle Eastern Americans, and those perceived to be Muslim, complicating the dialogue on discrimination in the United States. Awad is concerned with how prejudicial attitudes and ideology impact attitudes towards ethnic minorities generally and within specific domains such as the workplace and higher education. In addition, she examines how racial/ethnic identity and acculturation impact ethnic minorities’ perception of discrimination. Most recently, she has expanded her identity and acculturation research to the study of body image concerns among women of color.

Detroit Hustles Harder: The(Re) Production of Systemic Racism through Organizational Practice (October 8, 2021 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/86994 86994-21638107@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 8, 2021 1:00pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Interdisciplinary Committee on Organizational Studies - ICOS

Our relational ethnography of a resource-constrained entrepreneurial ecosystem with changing racial demographics expands the study of systemic racism that emerges in and through organizations. Drawing on Critical Race Theory and Intersectionality (CRT/I) frameworks, we critically interrogate the relational configuration between entrepreneurial support organizations (ESOs) and Black women entrepreneurs in Detroit, MI to understand how practices, or everyday activities that constitute organizational life, reinforce racial, gender, and class hierarchies. We implemented a site-based, relational ontology to analyze our qualitative interviews (n = 65) and field observations, which deepened the meaning and enactment of systemic racism in this particular ‘site’. Our data revealed ESOs use of discursive, embodied, and material practices to inform the types and extent of support offered to entrepreneurs in Detroit. Assemblages of these practices maintained or disrupted systemic racism through three key mechanisms: control over resources, relational patterns between residents, and the entrenched power dynamics in the city. Accordingly, we build theoretical knowledge of practices that may inadvertently reproduce racial inequality through adopting critical perspectives of organizations. We provide recommendations for organizations and other social institutions seeking to dismantle systemic racism based on the insights that emerged in our data. Keywords: Black women; entrepreneurs; Critical Race Theory; Intersectionality; Practice Theory

Detroit students and homelessness (October 12, 2021 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/87583 87583-21644198@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, October 12, 2021 4:00pm

What are some programs that are working well? What do parents and students affected by housing insecurity want districts to know?

About this event:
As students settle into their Detroit classrooms this autumn, many are carrying with them anxiety, trauma, and grief from the past year of pandemic living. And anywhere between 7,000 and 14,000 students are also facing housing insecurity, according to U-M researchers. That count is vastly higher than what Detroit schools have previously estimated, an issue exacerbated by the pandemic.

The stakes are now higher than ever to identify and better serve students experiencing homelessness, and Detroit isn’t alone in its struggles. During the pandemic, school districts across the country have reported drops in the number of homeless students — a result, many advocates say, of how hard it’s been to reach students who don’t have a stable place to live when school is remote.

What can be done to quickly find and serve these students in Detroit this fall? What are some programs that are working well? What do parents and students affected by housing insecurity want districts to know? Join Chalkbeat Detroit and the University of Michigan Poverty Solutions from 4-5 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Oct. 12 to dig into these important issues.

Panelists include:
- Jennifer Erb-Downward, senior research associate at Poverty Solutions at U-M
- Courtney Smith, founder and CEO of the Detroit Phoenix Center
- Azaria Terrell, a 17-year-old high school senior
- Iranetta Wright, deputy superintendent of schools at Detroit Public Schools Community District
- Terrence George, superintendent at Covenant House Academies
- Lori Higgins, Chalkbeat Detroit bureau chief and moderator

KEYWORDS: translational regulation, gene expression, fluorescence microscopy, intrabodies, single-molecule imaging

ABSTRACT: My lab is creating technology to image mRNA translation in real time and with single-molecule precision in living cells. In this talk, I will introduce our technology and describe how it can be used to amplify fluorescence from newly synthesized proteins as they are being translated from single mRNAs. I will show how we quantify these signals to determine the size, shape, subcellular localization, and mobilities of mRNA translation sites, as well as their protein synthesis dynamics. I will then highlight a few recent applications of our technology, focusing mainly on a new biosensor we have developed to quantify how individual regulatory factors impact single mRNA translation dynamics. Using this biosensor, we provide evidence that human Argonaute2 (Ago2) shuts down translation by down regulating translation initiation on the minutes timescale and helping usher translationally silent mRNAs into P-bodies on the hours timescale. I will conclude by discussing new fluorescent intrabodies my lab is engineering to light up nascent and mature proteins in multiple colors. As these intrabodies can be encoded on plasmids, they can easily be adapted by other labs to image gene activity in diverse living systems.
Timothy J. Stasevich is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Colorado State University (CSU). His lab uses a combination of advanced fluorescence microscopy, genetic engineering, and computational modeling to study the dynamics of gene regulation in living mammalian cells. His lab helped pioneer the imaging of real-time single-mRNA translation dynamics in living cells1. Dr. Stasevich received his B.S. in Physics and Mathematics from the University of Michigan, Dearborn, and his Ph. D. in Physics from the University of Maryland, College Park. He transitioned into experimental biophysics as a post-doctoral research fellow in the laboratory of Dr. James G. McNally at the National Cancer Institute. During this time, he developed technology based on fluorescence microscopy to help establish gold-standard measurements of live-cell protein dynamics. Dr. Stasevich next moved to Osaka University, where he worked with Dr. Hiroshi Kimura as a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Foreign Postdoctoral Research Fellow. While there, he helped create technology to image endogenous proteins and their post-translation modifications in vivo. This allowed him to image the live-cell dynamics of epigenetic histone modifications during gene activation for the first time2. Before joining the faculty at CSU, Dr. Stasevich spent a year as a Visiting Fellow at the HHMI Janelia Research Campus, where he applied superresolution fluorescence microscopy to improve the spatiotemporal resolution of endogenous protein imaging in live cells.

Understanding the Productive Beginnings of Engineering Judgement (October 20, 2021 10:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/87988 87988-21648635@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 20, 2021 10:30am

In 200- and 300-level engineering science courses, students are traditionally asked to use mathematical models to solve well-defined textbook homework problems. While these problems are important for practicing mathematical problem-solving, they lack the complexity of ill-defined, sociotechnical engineering projects in the real world. In my current research I seek to bridge this gap between the engineering classroom and engineering workplace by understanding how students engage in the productive beginnings of professional practices and how instructors can support these productive beginnings.   This seminar will focus on one particular practice, engineering judgment, which is the use of mathematical models in design and analysis. I will begin by discussing my background and own personal motivation for this interpretivist research. I will then present my work in progress on the development of a new theoretical framework of the productive beginnings of engineering judgment. This research has been conducted symbiotically with a new innovative type of assignment in which students model a real-world system by making and justifying their own assumptions. I will conclude by outlining my future work on students’ development of macroethical reasoning and formative assessment strategies instructors can use to engage students in the productive beginnings of professional practices.

ABOUT THE EVENT

Please join us for an engaging presentation and interactive discussion with Detroit native and Illinois State University Professor Charles Bell. Drawing on his personal life experience and over 150 interviews, Dr. Bell illuminates how carceral-inspired, punitive school-based disciplinary practices harm Black students, disrupt their parents' employment, and violate state and federal laws, demanding that we reimagine our approaches to school safety and discipline.

Charles will have copies of his brand new book, Suspended: Punishment, Violence, and the Failure of School Safety, available at the event, is free and open to the public.

The event is hosted by the Residential College and co-sponsored by the Sociology Department, Educational Studies, the Prison Creative Arts Project, and the Semester in the Detroit program.

The safety issues of cycling have become an increasing concern. This presentation, led by Drs. Shan Bao and Fred Feng, describes two unique studies related to cycling safety, from crash data analysis to a recent naturalistic cycling study in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Crash Report Sampling System data was used in this study to identify significant factors that impact cyclists’ crash injury levels. In the naturalistic cycling study, a fleet of four electric bikes was instrumented with cameras and GPS and was given to study participants as a substitute for their own bicycle. A total of over 5,000 miles of riding data from 77 subjects were collected over two years. The dataset could be used for studying the interactions between motorists and cyclists on real-world roadways.

Chanda Prescod-Weinstein's research focuses on theoretical work at the intersection of particle physics, cosmology, and astrophysics. She is interested in scalar dark matter candidates such as axions and axion-like particles, as well as neutron stars and inflationary cosmology. She is a member of the LSST Dark Matter Group and the STROBE-X Science Working Group, where she leads Team STROBE-Ax. Before coming to the University of New Hampshire, she held a NASA Postdoctoral Program Fellowship at Goddard Space Flight Center, a Martin Luther King Postdoctoral Fellowship in Physics at MIT, and was a research associate at the University of Washington.

In her book, "The Disordered Cosmos", Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein shares her love for physics, from the Standard Model of Particle Physics and what lies beyond it, to the physics of melanin in skin, to the latest theories of dark matter — all with a new spin informed by history, politics, and the wisdom of Star Trek.

One of the leading physicists of her generation, Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein is also one of fewer than one hundred Black American women to earn a Ph.D. from a department of physics. Her vision of the cosmos is vibrant, buoyantly non-traditional, and grounded in Black feminist traditions.

Prescod-Weinstein urges us to recognize how science, like most fields, is rife with racism, sexism, and other dehumanizing systems. She lays out a bold new approach to science and society that begins with the belief that we all have a fundamental right to know and love the night sky. The Disordered Cosmos dreams into existence a world that allows everyone to experience and understand the wonders of the universe.

This presentation is co-sponsored by the Poverty Solutions of the U-M and the U-M Department of Physics.

In recent years, many organizations have adopted the notion that employees should “bring their whole selves to work,” or be authentic in the workplace. Research supports the benefits of authenticity at work (Cha et al., 2019). The conversation often assumes that everyone has equal opportunity to express themselves authentically. Yet, given the discrimination experienced by some employees, such Black women, authentic behavior may not be attainable, even for those in leadership positions. Drawing from research on power and intersectionality, we examined the factors that influence authenticity for Black women leaders in organizations. Findings from qualitative interviews reveal factors that inhibit and facilitate the willingness to be authentic at work, as well as the different manifestations and consequences of authentic behavior for Black women leaders at work. I discuss the theoretical and practical insights that emerge from this work.

Black families act as STEM incubators. Despite stereotypical representations that are often rooted in deficit framing, Black families provide their children access to STEM opportunities, resources, capital, ways of thinking, behaving, and sense-making Scholars have identified that Black parents influence the college-going and completion process through practices such as sharing information, developing expectations around school completion, positioning students as examples to younger siblings/family members, and by sharing advice on how to persist when faced with challenging situations.  Building on this work, I will present some of my research on Black family life and the lineage Black contributions to STEM in order to provide evidence of the ways that Black families incubate STEM learning and aspirations. I have found that families – with emphasis on parents – leverage capital and establish family cultures values and practices that support STEM exploration and confidence. This talk will highlight some of my recent contributions along with implications for research on informal/family learning spaces

Corrective Care: Institutionalizing Children in the Territory of Hawaiʻi (November 10, 2021 4:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/88677 88677-21656597@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 10, 2021 4:30pm

This talk analyzes how social scientific knowledge structured practices of the institutionalization of Native Hawaiian children and other children of color in Territorial-era Hawaiʻi (1900-1959). Specifically, I look at the history of three connected institutions operated by the Territory of Hawaiʻi: the Waialeʻe Industrial School for Boys (opened in 1902), the Kawailoa Training School for Girls (opened in 1929), and the Waimano Home for the Feeble-Minded (opened in 1921). Social science provided the Territorial government language and “evidence” with which to argue that their practices of institutionalization were modern, progressive and humane, even when the official reports of those institutions suggested otherwise. I also look at how Native Hawaiians consistently attempted to continue their own forms of care despite the many ways that the Territorial government pathologized Native Hawaiian culture and families.

Organizations are continuing to direct efforts to recruit women and underrepresented minority members (URM; Black/African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander, or Hispanic/Latinx) to increase workforce diversity. Yet, the underrepresentation of women and URM members persists across many industries and organizations, rendering the need to strengthen the body of research that looks to find ways organizations can increase recruitment and selection of minority employees. My colleagues and I address this need by focusing on diversity recruitment within an academic setting, a context where hiring and promoting women and URM members continues to be a challenge. In the first two studies, we utilized and extend homophily theory to explain how and why the demographic composition of the recruitment team can contribute to attracting more women and URM candidates. In the third study, we examined how and why diversity recruitment strategies can have negative effects for URM applicants

The Clements Bookworm: Native American Boarding Schools as a Tool of U.S. Empire (November 19, 2021 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/87868 87868-21647195@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 19, 2021 10:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: William L. Clements Library

Dr. Veronica Pasfield discusses her continuing research to understand the full purpose and force of federal Indian boarding schools. She asserts that the creation story of Carlisle Indian School must be rooted in missionary schools founded to prepare Kanaka Maoli for wage labor on their own Hawaiian homelands as well as in the captivity of Native children in the Southwest by a U.S. Army desperate to bring about the submission of Western tribes by any means necessary. While administrators touted assimilation as a benevolent enterprise, the archives show that Indian children were used as hostages to secure the extraction of tribal resources, and “schools” were used as an instrument for transforming indigenous peoples into a permanent underclass in their own homeland.

Improvisation & Encounter: Pedagogy (November 22, 2021 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/89037 89037-21660285@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, November 22, 2021 7:00pm

The second in a series of virtual roundtable discussion curated by Scholar-in-Residency Ajay Heble, exploring the theme of Improvisation & Encounter. Drawing its inspiration in part from *The Fierce Urgency of Now: Improvisation, Rights, and the Ethics of Cocreation*, a collaboratively-authored book by Daniel Fischlin, George Lipsitz, and Ajay Heble, this series of online roundtable conversations will explore Improvisation in the arts as a scene of encounter. Moderated by Heble, the focus of the second panel is PEDAGOGY, and brings together educators from diverse disciplines. This roundtable will explore how the teaching and learning of improvisational artistic practices might be understood as vital and publicly resonant sites of encounter that generate new forms of knowledge, new understandings of identity and community, and new imaginative possibilities. How, we want to ask, might the kinds of cultural and pedagogical institutions and communities that present and promote improvised arts (both within and outside of traditional classrooms) shape our understanding of public culture, of memory, of history?

Douglas R. Ewart, Professor Emeritus at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, immigrated from Jamaica to Chicago in 1963, where he studied music theory at VanderCook College of Music, electronic music at Governors State University, and composition at the School of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. His life and his wide-ranging work have always been inextricably associated with Jamaican culture, history, politics, and the land itself. His extremely varied and highly interdisciplinary work encompasses music composition (including graphic and conceptual scores as well as conventionally notated works), painting and kinetic sound sculpture, and multi-instrumental performance. He has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, and others.

She also weaves movement into her group facilitation and program design for the local non-profit organization, Art Not Shame. Simms is currently an artist-in-residence with Guelph Dance for its 2020-2021 season.

Jesse Stewart is an award-winning composer, improviser, percussionist, visual artist, instrument builder, researcher, writer, educator, and community activist dedicated to reimagining the spaces between artistic disciplines. Organized By: Center for Connected and Automated Transportation

A significant, persisting challenge in transportation is traffic safety which, despite a decrease in vehicle miles traveled (VMT), led to 38,680 deaths and over 2.8 million injuries in the United States last year. Traffic crashes also result in an estimated economic loss of over $230 billion annually. Integrated vehicle passive and active safety systems and connectivity are required to mitigate crashes or avoid collisions.

For the final Distinguished Lecture Series of 2021, the Center for Connected and Automated Transportation (CCAT) is pleased to welcome Dr. Azim Eskandarian to review some timely research areas on vehicle control systems, signal processing, and communication-enabled connectivity to address the pervasive vehicle safety problem. Dr. Eskandarian will also discuss a holistic approach to vehicular safety and its advanced research challenges, including connectivity, ranging from partial to full autonomy and collision avoidance implications. Attendees will see a critical perspective on personal mobility and the future of driving that ensures safety and congestion mitigation while minimizing energy consumption.

The University College London (UCL) Centre for Engineering Education is a joint venture between Faculty of Engineering Sciences and the Institute of Education (IoE). Through research and active engagement, it aims to encourage the study of engineering and allied subjects and drive curriculum innovations to help create the next generation of engineering graduates needed to address complex global challenges. The Centre for Engineering Education is heavily involved in the running and dissemination of UCL Engineering's Integrated Engineering Programme (IEP) – one of the four case studies described in the MIT report “Reimagining and rethinking engineering education” – a pedagogical framework by which undergraduate students study using innovative and interdisciplinary approaches. In this session, I will focus on CEE’s research with IEP students and recent graduates to understand their experiences in the programme. Findings suggest gender differences in the awareness of the societal impact of engineering, and that communication skills are essential to engineering practice. Finally, I will highlight contributions for future longitudinal research on engineering student learning and career pathways in the UK.

The past year has been by marked the convergence of public health, racial justice, economic and democratic crises. To meet the moment, leaders have sought to heighten aspirations toward racial representation, equity and inclusion across industries. Bold proclamations in support of Black lives, and ambitious platforms to invest in Black livelihoods, have been backed by billions of dollars and coalitions of hundreds of leaders across sectors. As institutions begin to implement these diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, what will they establish as standards for success and indicators of progress? How will organizational leaders and their stakeholders assess whether the racial climate has transformed to reflect greater diversity, inclusion, equity, and justice? During this seminar, I will introduce a framework for pursuing Freedom at Work, grounded in the juxtaposition between the democratic ideals of liberty and justice, and the sociohistorical oppression of enslaved, African-descended Americans and other minoritized racial groups. I invite scholars and practitioners to analyze relative access to various freedoms at work (i.e., expression, actualization, deviation, transformation, reformation), consider how inequity undermines these freedoms, and examine how freedom fighters from racially diverse and occupationally diverse backgrounds can help leaders to embody the aspirations and ideals they hold for diversity, inclusion, equity and justice. This discussion will also explore means for placing guardrails on practices that undermine rather than uphold the liberties of communities that were long-denied access to educational opportunity, career mobility and economic advancement. In this vein, I take up the question of how personal leadership commitments and accountability practices might catalyze change, sustain momentum and advance the equal exercise of freedom at work for members of minoritized racial/ethnic identity groups.

Black Women in Sports Leadership: Navigating Workplace Blackness (December 10, 2021 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/89570 89570-21664219@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, December 10, 2021 1:30pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Interdisciplinary Committee on Organizational Studies - ICOS

Identity is a critical attribute of effective leadership. Moreover, interactions in the workplace (be they formal or informal) shape employees’ identities, as they reveal the extent to which identities are accepted or contested (Sanchez-Hucles & Davis, 2010). Sport organizational cultures, aptly characterized as inequality regimes (Acker, 2006) established at the axes of race and gender (and other ascriptions), create habitus (Bourdieu, 1984) of inclusion and exclusion that uniquely impact the identity and the leadership opportunities and experiences of Black women employed therein. The climate of many sport organizational cultures often discourages Black women from ‘bringing’ their authentic Blackness into the workplace, requiring them to engage in a number social-psychological strategies to insulate and protect the essence of their ‘self’ at work. This presentation is an excerpt of a larger project on Black women in sport leadership (Simpkins & Armstrong, In Progress). It will discuss race as aesthetic labor (Williams & Connell, 2010), and it will illustrate the manner in which Black women sport leaders navigate their Blackness in the workplace as: (a) personal agency, and (b) embodied racial identity. It will conclude by discussing the need for inclusive organizational cultures and workplaces free of anti-Black racism where Black women may thrive in the fullness of their Blackness as leaders.

Addressing Discrimination in the Asian Diaspora (December 11, 2021 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/89343 89343-21662063@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, December 11, 2021 10:00am
Location: Off Campus Location

This event is intended for K-14 Educators.

Free to participate via Zoom!

What are the Asian and Asian-American discrimination issues that students, teachers, and individuals are struggling to understand in today’s globalized world? How do teachers interweave the politics of immigration into world history and civics curriculum? What makes a place a home for someone, and how do we build on the storyscapes of the under-written histories of anti-Asian racism and Asian-American identity?

Removing the screen from “over there,” experts in Area and Asian-American studies will explore identity, immigration and nationality and provide a discussion forum for applying these ideas into classroom use. Content covered will include snapshots from mid-19th century-20th century histories of China, Japan and Korea; the push-pull factors for immigration; exclusionary immigration policies; and the nuances of Asian American identity. Insights will be made into Asian-ness as well as “Asian-Americanness,” with one of the takeaways being the “hyphen" in hyphenated ethnicities, the middle ground to individuality and self.

FORMAT:

A virtual learning event through morning mini-talks followed by conversation/Q&A and an afternoon collaborative discussion forum bracketed according to grade level.

Suggestions for pre-workshop reading will be available.

Resources and books available through the U-M Books for Peaceful Purposes Grant.

Looking forward to another amazing interactive day of knowledge, expertise and networking... the outreach team at TVI East Asia Centers, University of Michigan
