ABSTRACT: What sparks environmental policy leadership? Traditional explanations emphasize the importance of domestic interest groups and institutions but often overlook transnational actors that advocate for the adoption and spread of environmental policies. In this paper, I provide a new dataset on the adoption of environmental policies and develop a new definition of environmental policy leadership. I then show how transnational environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs) use their advocacy to stimulate countries' policy innovation and amplify their influence. I find that countries adopt new environmental policies at a 46% higher rate when more transnational ENGOs are present and countries that share more transnational ENGOs are 24% more likely to form leader-follower policymaking relationships. Transnational ENGOs appear to play an important role in catalyzing increases in national environmental policy leadership.

The primary function of this workshop is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for students and faculty to present their current projects and to receive feedback on either the methodological component of their project or a methodology under development. Presenters can also present new research questions and ideas and receive ideas about which methodologies would work best to tackle such questions. We define methodology broadly as the approaches to which data is collected and/or organized to give empirical content to social science research. It includes both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.

ABSTRACT
This paper examines how colonial and post-colonial expropriation of Maasai lands for conservation represent a form of primitive accumulation. Unlike current theorizations of primitive accumulation that prioritize explicit expropriation for capitalist production, my account
centers on the role of temporality in the Maasai political struggle to illustrate how the material and symbolic dimensions of primitive accumulation interlock. I show how states and conservationist groups justify and naturalize colonial and capitalist organizations of space by
drawing temporal distinctions between nature and civilization and between non-capitalist and capitalist systems. This study locates temporality as a key dimension of analysis and political struggle. It analyzes how efforts to mitigate the harms of capitalism often reproduce its temporality to the detriment of colonized peoples, and it provokes engagement with Indigenous conceptions of time that generate critical approaches to human and environmental relations.

The Political Theory Workshop provides a venue for political theory-oriented scholarship broadly construed. Participants include theoretically-inclined members of social science and humanities departments across the University of Michigan, as well as institutions throughout southwest Michigan.

Join us for a casual conversation with Naomi Klein that will touch upon the pivotal moment we are in as we work to address the climate crisis, fight for climate justice, and examine the detrimental impacts that colonialism and capitalism have had on our planet and society. What needs to happen to bring about transformative, systemic change at this critical time? Klein is an award-winning journalist, syndicated columnist, and best-selling author of On Fire: The (Burning) Case for a Green New Deal and This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs the Climate, as well as the inaugural Gloria Steinem Endowed Chair in Media, Culture, and Feminist Studies at Rutgers University.

Animal Rights: A WeListen Staff Discussion (April 6, 2021 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/82956 82956-21227225@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, April 6, 2021 2:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Ginsberg Center

This WeListen session is open to all UM staff members across the political spectrum.

All voices and views are welcome and the Zoom link for this event will be shared once you've RSVP'd.

RSVP here: http://bit.ly/WLApril21

We will discuss the history of animal rights in the U.S., and animals as food sources and the impact on climate change. Participants will receive a content presentation to review in advance of the virtual session, and the majority of our time will be spent in small group discussion.

Our aim is to bring liberals, conservatives, libertarians- everyone across the political spectrum- together for constructive conversation. The goal of WeListen discussions is not to debate or argue, but to understand the views and values of others and to learn from their perspectives. The session will begin with a brief content presentation to provide a basic understanding of the topic. No specific level of knowledge is required to participate in WeListen discussions.

By participating in WeListen sessions, staff members will:
- Expand understanding of a prominent political topic
- Practice discussing difficult topics with others,
- Gain openness to new ideas and perspectives,
- Learn to productively challenge an idea, and
- Form a sense of community among fellow staff members.

Questions? Email us at welistenstaff@umich.edu.

This event is co-sponsored by the WeListen Staff Series planning committee with members from the Ginsberg Center, the International Institute, LSA Psychology and Michigan Medicine, and the LSA DEI Office.
