EVERYONE’S INVITED.

Culture. Music. Festivities. Tea. Food. Dance.

Grab your cultural clothes, grab your friends, and join cultural Bangladeshi, Egyptian, Iraqi, Jordanian, Lebanese, Palestinian, Pakistani, Persian, Syrian, and Yemeni student organizations for a night of cultural celebration and empowerment. A chance for our diverse cultures - Desi, Non-Desi, Middle-Eastern, Non-Middle Eastern - to unite over a common struggle.

What all ten of these countries share are serious sanitation issues. Many have suffered as a result of these unsafe conditions, and unfortunately, media has portrayed them as victims from political warfare rather than human beings with rich, deep cultural ties and appreciation for their country. As a way to honor and showcase this love for the countries, Paani is bringing together everyone together to rediscover their cultural roots!

Malaysian Cultural Night 2020 (February 2, 2020 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/71700 71700-17868607@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, February 2, 2020 6:00pm
Location: Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre
Organized By: Michigan Malaysian Students' Association (MiMSA)

For the past 10 years, the Michigan Malaysian Students' Association (MiMSA) has come together to prepare for one special night every year: the Malaysian Cultural Night.
Free for all, people of all ages are welcome to spend their evening with a musical that delves into Malaysian art, culture and racial dynamics. Guests are also invited for a free dinner with some good Malaysian company after the show. This year, we present Kita.

Kita (Us)

Malaysian Cultural Night 2020 will follow the story of 4 Malaysian students who transferred to the University of Michigan, each with their unique background stories. The light hearted play will showcase unity among ethnically diverse people, and most importantly, the significance of true friendship. The characters will embody individuals that struggle with family expectations, finding their identities away from home, making friends all whilst adapting to a new culture in a new country. This play is highly relatable to students who are studying abroad, and it aims to realize the experience as well as to educate the non-Malaysian audience on our identity. MCN 2020 will also showcase a variety of traditional dances from different ethnic groups in Malaysia.

As one of America’s most performed composers, David Lang has “solidified his standing as an American master,” as The New Yorker puts it. His catalog of work is extensive, and his opera, orchestra, chamber, and solo works are by turns ominous, ethereal, urgent, hypnotic, unsettling, and emotionally direct. In 2008, the New York-based composer was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for the little match girl passion, a score for four voices and a few percussion instruments, played by the singers, based on the children’s story by Hans Christian Andersen. Additionally, Lang’s score for Paolo Sorrentino’s film Youth received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations, among others. Other recent work includes man made, a concerto co-commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the BBC Symphony; the loser, an opera based on the novel by Thomas Bernhard, which opened the 2016 Next Wave Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music; and prisoner of the state, an opera co-commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, De Doelen concert hall in the Netherlands, the Barbican Centre in London, l’Auditori concert hall in Barcelona, the Bochum Symphony Orchestra in Germany, the Concertgebouw in Belgium, and Malmö Opera in Sweden. Lang is co-founder and co-artistic director of Bang on a Can, a New York-based organization dedicated to the support of experimental music.

David Lang’s appearance is courtesy of the William Bolcom Guest Residency at the U-M School of Music, Theater, and Dance, with additional support from the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA).

Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Writing in her own genre, Karissa Bone introduces music with the bop-factor of Pop, the soul of R&B, and the unexpected element of pinpointed introspective lyrics. Hailing from Saginaw, MI, her style is influenced by Motown, Classic Rock, and everything in life that goes sideways. Her airy, yet powerful voice melts together with her soul-twisting lyrics to make every song a memorable journey. Whether she’s with a full band, string section, at a grand piano, or playing solo with her electric guitar, Bone’s live shows are full of energy and belonging. With short comedic breaks, she seamlessly covers topics from heartbreak to nostalgia, to the modern age of technology. Her artistry truly shows through– when she sings, you stop and listen.

In 2019, while studying at the University of Michigan's School of Music, Theatre & Dance, Bone paid her dues in Ann Arbor, where she's performed at the famed Blind Pig, the Ann Arbor Summer Festival, and the Canterbury House. She currently studies songwriting at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

You can find her on Instagram @itskarissabone

The Ann Arbor Film Festival returns for its 58th year March 24 - 29, 2020.  Thousands of influential filmmakers and artists have showcased work at the AAFF, including Andy Warhol, Yoko Ono, Gus Van Sant, Barbara Hammer, Lawrence Kasdan, Devo, and George Lucas. The longest-running avant-garde and experimental film festival in North America, it presents films of all lengths and genres, including experimental, animation, documentary, fiction, and performance-based works. The festival serves as one of a handful of Academy Award®-qualifying festivals in the United States.    This year, the AAFF is featuring a Music Videos in Competition program. These contemporary music videos include beard-based lifeforms, an unexpected visitor, a journey forward, a setar player, a future so remote it looks like the past, an exorcism attempt, power dynamics and sexual abuse, a Jungian alternate universe wormhole, another dimension, mesmerizing voices, disturbing arte-facts brought to light, a blackhole, and a haunted car ride with Kim Gordon.

This program is free and open to the public and co-sponsored by the University of Michigan Museum of Art.

Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

New York based artist Abigail DeVille creates immersive works and installations designed to bring attention to these forgotten stories, such as with the sculpture she built on the site of a former African American burial ground in Harlem. With family roots spanning back at least two generations, DeVille’s work about New York City is both personal and political. Acting as an archaeologist, DeVille collects and reallocates found materials to give physical presence to unspoken stories and forgotten pasts. Her work often focuses around themes of displacement, migration, marginalization, and cultural invisibility. As an extension of her installation practice, DeVille also designs sets for theatrical productions, including the Stratford Festival and Harlem Stage. Her work is part of some of the most prestigious collections in the world and has been exhibited internationally, including the Institute of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles); The Studio Museum in Harlem (New York); the Pinchuk Art Centre (Kiev); New Museum (New York); and the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam).  An honors fellow at The Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard, a Creative Capital grantee, and an OBIE Award for Design recipient, DeVille is currently in residence at the American Academy in Rome.

Co-presented with the Institute for Humanities, presenting No Space Hidden (Under Heaven), an exhibition of work by Abigail DeVille, on view at the IH Gallery April 1-May 7, 2020. There will be an exhibition reception at the IH Gallery following this event.

Penny Stamps Speaker Series: New Red Order, Never Settle (September 18, 2020 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/77114 77114-19798482@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 18, 2020 8:00pm

The New Red Order (NRO) is a mutable collective, a “public secret society,” facilitated by three core contributors — brothers Zack and Adam Khalil, who are Ojibway and grew up in northern Michigan, and Jackson Polys, who is Tlingit from Alaska. The collective creates video and performance works that question the desire for indigeneity in dominant culture. Working with an interdisciplinary network of informants, the NRO co-produces video, performance, and installation works that confront settler colonial tendencies and obstacles to Indigenous growth and agency. Their individual and collaborative work has been presented at the Alaska State Museum, Anchorage Museum, Berlinale, LACMA, Museum of Modern Art, Sundance Film Festival, Tate Modern, Toronto Biennial of Art, Walker Art Center, and Whitney Biennial 2019.

This speaker series event includes the screening of two films presented by the artists.

Never Settle: Calling In is a short recruitment video for New Red Order, a public-secret society that simultaneously satirizes and sincerely engages with efforts for solidarity and the desire for Indigenous epistemologies. Delving into the stakes of accompliceship, the video examines dynamic conditions in which the concerns of Indigenous people can be treated as a topic du jour, then co-opted. This video is part of an ambitious, multi-part project that includes a public recruitment campaign and participatory installations that invite prospective recruits to undergo an initiation. Playing with the notion of headhunting, NRO seeks to enlist candidates in their public secret-society, thereby investigating shame and the desire for indigeneity. Never Settle poses the question of how to channel what might be seen as inappropriate urges to merge with indigeneity into paths for the expansion of Indigenous growth and agency.

Adam and Zack Khalil’s debut film INAATE/SE/ [it shines a certain way. to a certain place/it flies. falls./] re-imagines an Anishinaabe story, the Seven Fires Prophecy, which both predates and predicts first contact with Europeans. A kaleidoscopic experience blending documentary, narrative, and experimental forms, INAATE/SE/ explores how the prophecy resonates through the generations in their indigenous community on the Michigan/Canadian border. With acute geographic specificity, and grand historical scope, the film fixes its lens between the sacred and the profane to pry open the construction of contemporary indigenous identity.

Philippa P.B. Hughes is a social sculptor and creative strategist who produces art-fueled projects that spark humanizing and authentic conversations across political, social, and cultural divides. She is an evangelist for dismantling the polarization industrial complex, one conversation at a time. Hughes has designed and produced hundreds of creative activations since 2007 for curious folks to engage with art and one another in unconventional and meaningful ways. She leads CuriosityConnects.us, a partner in Looking For America, a national series inviting politically diverse guests to break bread and talk to each other face-to-face using art as a starting point for relationship-building conversations. Hughes has engineered numerous public-private collaborations that have been funded by the Kresge Foundation, New American Economy, Center for Inclusion & Belonging, and the DC Office of Planning. She has served as a commissioner on the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities among numerous other boards throughout Washington, D.C., where she is based. Hughes has spoken at TEDxAmericanUniversity, Creative Placemaking Week 2018 in Amsterdam, Creative Placemaking Leadership Summit, TomTom Festival, Smart Growth America’s Intersections. Her work has been featured by CNN, PBS Newshour, CityLab, and The Washington Post, among numerous other media outlets. Her formal training took place at the University of Virginia, which launched her into a six-year legal career that ended with the Washington City Paper declaring 2007 “The Year of Philippa.” Deep curiosity about the world and the people in it provided the education that mattered most.
