The purpose of the 100 acre farm will enhance LTBB food sovereignty by providing a reliable food source for the community independent of the larger food system, encouraging a healthy lifestyle for our people and enhancing people’s knowledge and ability to do farming/gardening and subsistence activities for themselves. Ziibimijwang is located in the “Tip of the Mitt” only 10 miles south of Mackinaw City, Michigan. Proud to grow high quality, nutritionally dense, seasonal vegetables using sustainable farming practices that will follow Organic standards that care for the soil, groundwater, and adjacent natural areas. No synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides on the farm.

Come watch "Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret" and listen to Professor Bryan Goldsmith talk with us about sustainability! And Professor Goldsmith is performing cutting-edge research to promote sustainability through advanced materials and computational modeling. This event is put on by the sustainability committee of the Engineering Student Government and we believe that with education, we can learn to become more sustainable together.

Season of Giving: Food Drive for Food Gatherers (December 14, 2020 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/79856 79856-20509614@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, December 14, 2020 8:00am
Location: North Campus Research Complex Building 18
Organized By: Michigan Medicine

The season of giving has once again arrived in Michigan. But this one comes amid a surging pandemic, an economic downturn, and a looming deadline for continuation of federal financial relief.

All of these have created intense need in communities surrounding Michigan Medicine. In response, the University of Michigan’s academic medical center will launch a third effort to encourage its own team, and the local community, to give food and funds to support Food Gatherers.

Starting December 14, and continuing through the 22nd, this will include a convenient drive-up drop-off location for food and toiletries, open to U-M faculty, staff and students, and members of the community in a position to give. It's located at Dock 90 of the North Campus Research Complex, just off Huron Parkway.

Donors may give online via credit card, or get information about giving by mail or phone, at http://www.foodgatherers.org/UM.

Already this year, donors to Michigan Medicine’s previous two drives have contributed the equivalent of 128,000 meals for Food Gatherers to distribute to more than 170 agencies that serve people throughout Washtenaw County and beyond. Generous individuals have also given thousands of pounds of personal care items, from diapers to toothbrushes.

The donation drive started in March, as part of Michigan Medicine’s effort to gather much-needed personal protective equipment during the early days of the pandemic when normal supply chains were disrupted.

Since that time, Food Gatherers’ partners have experienced a consistent surge in demand from people affected by the economic effects of the pandemic. Uncertainty over the future of federal and state relief efforts is making planning difficult.

Season of Giving: Food Drive for Food Gatherers (December 21, 2020 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/79856 79856-20509621@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, December 21, 2020 8:00am

The Clements Bookworm: Art, Food, and the Politics of Race in the Age of American Expansion (January 15, 2021 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/80391 80391-20713708@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, January 15, 2021 10:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: William L. Clements Library

Still-life paintings of food look innocent at first sight, but were depictions of food merely delicious and pretty pictures to admire? Shana Klein's new book, "The Fruits of Empire," argues otherwise. This book talk will address Klein's research on representations of food to understand how they reflected and shaped conversations about race and national expansion in the United States. She will discuss the paintings, photographs, and silverware objects in the book and ask: Who do images of food serve? And at whose expense? The results are not always delicious.

Dr. Klein, Assistant Professor of Art History at Kent State University, is trained in the history of American art, with sub-specialties in African-American and Native-American art.

This episode was generously sponsored by Duane and Marilyn Kirking.

*The Clements Bookworm is a webinar series in which panelists discuss history topics. Recommended books, articles, and other resources are provided in each session. Inspired by the traditional Clements Library researcher tea time, we invite you to pull up a chair at our [virtual] table. Live attendees are encouraged to post comments and questions, respond to polls, and add to our conversation and camaraderie.*

Michael and Bridget have created a unique, family friendly and wine friendly space engaging the community with special food and wine dinners, tastings, Italian language classes, summer outdoor Italian movies and participating in many charity events.

Paesano is a great friend of OLLI, hosting many of our after-lecture lunches and treating our speakers to their luncheon meal.

Sous Chef Wade Grysban, who has 15 years of experience, has worked in the Paesano kitchen since 2016. He colleagues think of him “as a force to be reckoned with” – he has worked his way up to sous chef after working every station in the kitchen. Chef Wade takes great pride in working in a “scratch kitchen” and has been responsible for the addition of a number of vegan items to the menu.

Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the event will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the event. Once you register, you will receive details about purchasing and pick up before the event.

The Farm Stand is weekly pop-up market and education project that sells produce grown by students for students. The project is a collaboration between the UM Sustainable Food Program (UMSFP) and the Campus Farm. Hopefully, the Farm Stand will safely re-open in the summer of 2021. UM Sustainable Food Program working groups serve as a creative, free-thinking space where the needs and wishes directly from students can be realized, by students. There are three “themed” working groups: Campus Farm Stand, DEI, and Campus Collaboration. These themes serve as spaces where students are able to meet and collaborate with other people from different majors, interests, and backgrounds to brainstorm about what sustainable food justice and practices should look like at the university and surrounding communities. Working Group meeting times vary by semester. The Farm Stand Working Group meets bi-weekly on Thursdays from 3-4pm. Questions? Email bfrom@umich.edu.

For many, the Covid-19 pandemic has meant getting deeply reacquainted with our kitchens and  pushing the limits of home cooking creativity. David Tamarkin, Digital Director of Epicurious and author of Cook90: The 30-Day Plan for Faster, Healthier, Happier Meals, is an outspoken champion of home cooking and launched "Cooking Through It" on Epi as a response to the pandemic. Tamarkin will reflect on how food media has responded to the pandemic, share tips on how to keep home cooking fun and fresh as we soldier on, explore the intersection of home cooking and sustainability, and dish on all the hot (and not-so-hot) pandemic food trends. Hosted by Jim Leija, UMMA Deputy Director for Public Experience and Learning.

Tamarkin joined Epicurious as its chief editor in 2015. His words and recipes have appeared in publications such as Bon Appetit, Healthyish, Gourmet, Cooking Light, Every Day with Rachael Ray, Food Network Magazine, The Guardian, Wine & Spirits, Time Out New York, and Time Out Chicago, where for many years he was the food editor. David is the creator of COOK90 and the author of COOK90: The 30-Day Plan for Faster, Healthier, Happier Meals, which the New York Times called "excellent." He's also the co-author of More Mexican Every Day and the publisher of the short-lived, experimental cooking magazine Middlewest. Find him on twitter @DavidTamarkin.

Jacob Gorski from the Ann Arbor District Library and Sean Kramer from UMMA chat about their discoveries while digging into Ann Arbor’s queer history for their respective projects, the AADL podcast, The Gayest Generation, and the UMMA exhibition, Oh, honey… A queer reading of the collection. Jacob, a transplant from Saginaw, Michigan, and Sean, a native of middle-of-nowhere Kansas, have both lived in Ann Arbor for several years now and both had expectations about what they heard was a hip, artsy college town where coffee shops, bookstores, bars, and restaurants abound. They’ll discuss their earliest encounters with Ann Arbor—from walking to the food co-op to Google searching “gay bar near me”—and how their perceptions have changed over the years just as the city has. Audience members are invited to share their own hot takes on Ann Arbor’s past and present.

Lisa McDonald, tea sommelier and owner of TeaHaus, will demonstrate how to make a variety of teas with the opportunity to taste. We will also have the opportunity to purchase a tea sample and brew along during the demonstration.

After a “short backpacking trip” through Europe that turned into a 14-year residency and career in Germany and Sweden, Lisa McDonald returned to the US with her husband, Marc Hewko (an Ann Arborite she met in Germany), to start a family. After a few months, she began to miss the high- quality loose tea available in Europe so she, a European-trained tea sommelier, decided to open a tea store of her own in Kerrytown. After several years, TeaHaus expanded, opening the ever-popular Tea Room/Café, and then in 2017, sister business Eat More Tea debuted, offering tea-infused gelato, tea-based spice blends, and much more. Lisa remains one a handful of European trained tea sommeliers in the US.

Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the event will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the event. Once you register, you will receive details about purchasing and pick up before the event.

Class content will focus on linguistic as well as cultural proficiency, with the goal of enabling students to develop the vocabulary necessary not only for cooking, but also describing regional cuisines and conducting themselves in business, family, and social settings -- in Chinese. Topics will range from the structure of the Chinese meal; the history of various staples (wheat, millet, rice); regional differences in cuisine; religious diversity within China; the role of food connoisseurship in Chinese culture.

During the colloquium, Amy and Miranda will introduce the design and aims of the course, and open a dialogue with faculty about the challenges. They also hope to solicit feedback and suggestions from the faculty.

Steve Mangigian is the Managing Partner at Zingerman’s Coffee Company and Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory. After growing up in Philadelphia, Steve has spent most of his adult life in Ann Arbor.

He has held a number of positions in a variety of industries before coming to ZIngerman’s. Steve found his way to the Zingerman’s Coffee Company in 2006 where his passion, knowledge and love for coffee grew. Steve is involved in every aspect of the coffee business from sourcing to roasting to building the wholesale base of customers.

Food is more than what we eat. It is a lens through which we can address the biggest challenges that face us in the 21st century. Our food systems are not broken, they were designed to support the few while depriving the many. Now we have an opportunity to design them differently,  to help cultivate sustainable resilient systems that nourish all people and the planet.

These public talks, by the fifth graduating class of Stamps Master of Design in Integrative Design program, will examine topics like climate change, value driven economic change, community, and education, through the lens of food.

Eric Kinsler-Holloway of EK Cheesecakes will wow us with his cheesecakes. He will demonstrate how to make a scrumptious cheesecake and participants can purchase a sampler of sweet treats.

Eric started making cheesecakes in 2014 with his mom. He enjoyed it so much he decided to make them on his own. Before long, friends and family were requesting his cheesecakes. In 2017 he started EK’s Cheesecakes while working full time as a certified maintenance technician. He made an Instagram page in mid-October and gave a few cheesecakes to some friends for free. He snapped a few pictures before he delivered them and put them on Instagram. He had almost 15 cheesecakes to make for Thanksgiving the following month!

Making cheesecake has become his passion. He now works at Zingerman’s Bakehouse baking bread.

Tommy was involved in the purchase of the former Big Ten Party Store in 2001 and has been fine tuning the business ever since. Chen, Kim Q. Hall, Jennifer A. Hamilton, Anita Mannur, Elspeth Probyn, Parama Roy, Banu Subramaniam, Angela Willey, and Psyche Williams-Forson.

Ziibimijwang Farm is helping restore food sovereignty for the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians and other communities throughout the northern Great Lakes region.

What opportunities and benefits are there for Native American Tribes and Communities in operating a sustainable, community-based farm? What are the challenges associated with this approach and how can they be successfully managed? How can collaboration with tribal and non-tribal institutions, such as the University of Michigan's Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum, help promote Ziibimijwang’s mission?

Please join us as Joe Van Alstine will discuss ways in which Ziibimijwang is working to provide a reliable food source for tribal community members independent of the larger food system, encourage healthy eating, and enhance people’s knowledge of how to raise their own food.

Farm Stand Student Engagement Working Group (April 15, 2021 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/81634 81634-20935519@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, April 15, 2021 3:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: University of Michigan Sustainable Food Program (UMSFP)

The Farm Stand is weekly pop-up market and education project that sells produce grown by students for students. The project is a collaboration between the UM Sustainable Food Program (UMSFP) and the Campus Farm. Hopefully, the Farm Stand will safely re-open in the summer of 2021. Join us as we plan educational partnerships for the Farm Stand's future.

102 Years of Local Food: the past, present, and future of the Ann Arbor Farmer’s Market (April 21, 2021 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/79827 79827-20507634@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, April 21, 2021 3:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

As much of Ann Arbor has become unrecognizable to long-time residents, the Ann Arbor Farmers Market is a mainstay, both as a provider of local produce and products and a gathering space. Learn about the history of the Ann Arbor Farmer’s Market, how the global pandemic has impacted operations, and how we plan on bringing this vibrant market and community space into the future.

Presenter Stefanie T. Stauffer, PhD has been the Ann Arbor Farmer’s Market Manager since May 2020, bringing 12 years of local food expertise to the role. She is the former Program Manager of Tilian Farm Development Center, a now defunct incubator for beginning farmers in Ann Arbor Township. She has also taught the Sociology of Race and Ethnic Relations at Washtenaw Community College since 2015, with an emphasis on food sovereignty and environmental justice movements. As a veteran Ypsilanti Farmer’s Markets vendor who sells her products at Argus Farm Stop and to local restaurants as well, she has been feeding our community since 2010 as Nightshade Farm. She is also a board member of Growing Hope, a former Greenbelt Advisory Commissioner, and a former board member of the Ypsilanti Food Cooperative. As a farmer, farmer’s market vendor, educator, activist, and beginning farmer mentor, she has been deeply rooted in our local food system since her dissertation project on sustainable agriculture brought her back to Michigan in 2008.

In 2014, she traveled to Slow Food International’s Salone del Gusto e Terra Madre in Torino, Italy as a US delegate representing Southeast Michigan family farmers, food artisans, and Slow Food Ark of Taste producers.

Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the presentation will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the event.

Gallery Talk: Detroit Culinary Champions (June 17, 2021 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/84185 84185-21620709@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, June 17, 2021 7:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

This webinar/virtual gallery talk will feature three highly celebrated chefs in Detroit, each of whom brings a new aesthetic, new culinary ideas, and a new way of presenting halal food to new audiences. Chefs Omar Anani, Warda Bouguettaya, and Mamba Hamissi will sit down with Halal Metropolis curator Sally Howell for a conversation on their respective projects, the role of food in their communities, and the way their work participates in redefining the future of Detroit.

The Halal Metropolis exhibition, by artist Osman Khan, photographer Razi Jafri, and historian Sally Howell, explores the facts, fictions, and imaginaries of the Muslim population(s) in Detroit and Southeast Michigan as viewed through historical research, documentation of current conditions, and explorations of future desires. The Halal Metropolis is one where Muslims practice their faith freely and contribute to society with all of their talents and commitments. It is created dialogically and requires Muslims to be visible to one another and to non-Muslims. It encourages Muslims to organize and speak as believers, citizens, and artists.

Stamps events are free and open to the public, and we are committed to making them accessible to all attendees. This event will be online using the Zoom platform with an auto-generated Live Transcript available. Questions may be asked using the Q&A feature on Zoom. If you anticipate needing any additional accommodations to participate, please email asbaban@umich.edu at least one week in advance of the scheduled event so we can arrange for your accommodation or an effective alternative. After receiving your request, our team will follow up with you directly. This event can also be live streamed on Halal Metropolis and Stamps Gallery’s Facebook pages, @halalmetropolis and @umstamps.

This exhibition is presented in partnership with the University of Michigan-Dearborn’s Center for Arab American Studies (CAAS), with support from the Knight Foundation, the Doris Duke Foundation, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the El-Hibri Foundation, the Community Foundation of SE Michigan, and the Michigan Humanities Council.
