Promoting accountability for human rights violations is often a central element of peacebuilding in conflict-torn states. When domestic rule-of-law institutions have foundered, some governments have taken the remarkable step of inviting international actors to step into the breach. The United Nations in particular has sometimes shared core sovereign authorities to enforce laws, probe crimes, and prosecute and adjudicate them. These joint ventures aim to combine local and international knowledge and resources to advance accountability. In practice, however, sharing sovereign authority is very difficult to carry out effectively.

This Donia Human Rights Center event will feature a discussion of “Sovereignty Sharing in Fragile States” a new book by University of Michigan Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy professor John Ciorciari in conversation with Prof. Susanna Campbell of American University, an expert on peacebuilding and international interventions. Ciorciari will share findings from the book, outlining conditions under which shared sovereignty tends to fail or succeed in advancing accountability for human rights violations. He will pay special attention to the contrasting experiences of “hybrid” criminal tribunals for Sierra Leone, Cambodia and Lebanon and a unique international anti-impunity commission in Guatemala. Campbell will offer comments and insights based on her extensive research on global-local interactions in international peacebuilding initiatives in Africa, Asia, and beyond.

This event is co-sponsored by: Center for Southeast Asian Studies, and the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy International Policy Center and Weiser Diplomacy Center.

John D. Ciorciari is an associate professor of public policy at the University of Michigan’s Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, where he directs the Weiser Diplomacy Center and International Policy Center. He is also a faculty affiliate of the Donia Human Rights Center. His research focuses on international law and politics in the Global South, with a particular focus on Asia. He is the author of "Sovereignty Sharing in Fragile States" (Stanford University Press, 2021) and co-author of "Hybrid Justice: The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia" (University of Michigan Press 2014), among other articles and books. He has been an Andrew Carnegie Fellow, an Asia Society Fellow, a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford, a policy official in the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of International Affairs, and an associate at the international law firm of Davis Polk & Wardwell. He holds a BA and JD from Harvard and an MPhil and DPhil from Oxford, where he was a Fulbright Scholar.

Susanna Campbell is assistant professor at the School of International Service at American University and director of the Research on International Policy Implementation Lab. Her research focuses on statebuilding, peacebuilding, peacekeeping, international development and humanitarian aid, international institutions and NGOs, and issues of civil war and peace. She is the author of "Global Governance and Local Peace" (Cambridge University Press, 2018) and co-author of book manuscript entitled "Aid in Conflict." She has conducted extensive fieldwork in conflict-affected countries, received several large grants for her research, and published widely in prominent peer-reviewed journals. She also engages regularly in policy practice. She directs the Research on International Policy Implementation Lab (RIPIL), an affiliate of Bridging the Gap, and recently completed her term as a senior advisor for the congressionally-mandated Task Force on Extremism in Fragile States. She has led evaluations of the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund, United Nations Development Program, the World Bank, the UK Department for International Development (DFID), and Care International. She has also worked for the Council on Foreign Relations and UNICEF Burundi. She received her PhD in 2012 from Tufts University and was a Post-Doctoral Researcher at The Graduate Institute in Geneva and Columbia University’s Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies.

As studying abroad becomes more of a possibility for U-M students, particularly for Winter 2022, CGIS will be offering a 2-day Winter Advising event where students can learn more about major-specific programs such as programs in the environment, pre-health, and public health and interest-specific program sessions such as studying abroad in the UK and English-Taught programs in Asia to name few. The LSA Scholarship Office and the Office of Financial Aid will join us on May 20th to help answer questions you may have on funding your semester program abroad as well as walking you through the application process! First Step sessions will be offered each day of the event as well. Each info session will be interactive. Each session will offer an opportunity to interact with advisors and address questions or concerns you may have regarding study abroad. To get a general idea of participation, please RSVP below and select info sessions that you'd be interested in. We'll send you a Zoom link as we get closer to the event!

DISCLAIMER: With each passing term, a small yet increasing number of our programs seem to offer the possibility of receiving students, so CGIS proceeded with very cautious optimism that students will be able to study abroad in the coming academic year. CGIS and the University of Michigan continue to closely monitor the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) situation as it develops worldwide. Parents and other concerned parties who would like to receive this information should ask their students to share the updates with them. Students planning to participate in CGIS programs worldwide are advised to continue to closely monitor the latest developments and to adhere to any national and international public health directives issued by their host country or institution. CGIS will contact students who have opened or submitted an application to a CGIS program if and when updates are available.

The Global Theories of Critique (GTC) workshop this year revolves around the practice of un-disciplining knowledge. Each speaker will open up the session with the body of theory and/or practice they strive to un-discipline and challenge in their work. Followed by a round-table discussion of the speakers’ work that the participants will read beforehand. All meetings are on Zoom, and open to the public.

Our first event will be reading the recent work of Prof. Chandan Reddy on the topic of "Enactments of Queer of Color Critique." Prof. Reddy is Associate Professor in the Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality and the Department of Comparative History of Ideas, at the University of Washington. Students who are seeking international experiences as a way to explore their own roots are considered heritage seekers. Their experiences with a certain culture give them a unique perspective and can serve as an advantage in their immersion experience, and while most heritage seekers are invested emotionally and intellectually in their host country/homeland, some may neglect to consider the negative impacts of their perceived familiarity with the culture. Join us for this special brief where we discuss this somewhat invisible identity and the benefits and barriers a heritage seeker can encounter while navigating abroad. RSVP @ https://myumi.ch/88rvK

Translation and Migration: A Virtual Conversation with Karla Cornejo Villavicencio (October 1, 2021 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/87136 87136-21639082@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 1, 2021 3:00pm

Organized By: Comparative Literature

Join us from 3-4:30 pm via zoom on October 1, 2021 for a virtual conversation with Karla Cornejo Villavicencio about translation and migration in her debut book of creative non-fiction, The Undocumented Americans.

To kick off the tenth annual Translate-a-thon at the University of Michigan, Professor William Stroebel will sit down and talk with Villavicencio about the roles, methods, and uses of translation lurking behind and inside the pages of her book: translation between languages, translation between dialects and registers, translation between spoken and written media, translation between genres of translation like interpretation in legal or journalistic settings and literary translation, along with her current attempts to translate the book into Spanish.

Her book breaks many things. It breaks boundaries between genres, mixing the rhythms of rock and the cadences of hip hop and the political anger of punk and the slow contemplation of lyric poetry into the burning advocacy of its prose reportage (along with a little dose of magical realism to boot). The book also breaks the mold of representation traditionally deployed by advocates and allies, who elevate the gifted DREAMers of DACA into poster children above a faceless, nameless mass of day-laborers, cleaners, construction workers, factory hands, deliverymen, dish washers and dog walkers.

These are the ones who take center stage in her book, and tell their stories as beautifully imperfect, hardworking, weird, and “just people,” sorting through the trauma of an oppressive system built and sustained by their exploitation and terrorization and invisibility. Villavicencio breaks through this invisibility and the taboos of representation and in doing so she calls upon its readers to break the system: “it’s time to fuck some shit up.” But amidst the great praise that this finalist for the National Book Award has won, very little has been said about another thing that her avant-gardism breaks: conventions of translation.

This event is co-sponsored by the Department of Comparative Literature and the Language Resource Center at the University of Michigan, with support from the 2021-22 Mellon Sawyer Seminar Series on Sites of Translation in the Multilingual Midwest.

We invite community members of all ages and languages to participate in the annual Translate-a-Thon at the University of Michigan on October 1-2, 2021.

A Translate-a-Thon is a short, intense, community-driven translation marathon, where volunteers interested in translation come together to translate materials for the benefit of our local, national, and international community.

Coordinated by the Language Resource Center and co-sponsored by the Department of Comparative Literature, our Translate-a-thon also promotes a sense of community among translators. We welcome current students and alums, faculty and staff, teachers and students from local high schools, prospective transfer students, professional translators and other interested parties.

This year we are celebrating ten years of the Translate-a-Thon, with a special theme on translation and migration. We kick off the weekend at 3pm on October 1 with a Virtual Conversation with Karla Cornejo Villavicencio, author of The Undocumented Americans. We will highlight translation projects for Freedom House Detroit, to support their mission of outreach to asylum seekers.

A range of other community translation projects will also be available to work on over the weekend, remotely or in person. Check out our Translation Gallery with more information for volunteers to translate work on projects in many languages!

We also welcome colleagues from other colleges and universities who would like to observe our activities in order to learn about organizing similar events at their own institutions. To follow up, we will host a workshop on “How to Run a Translate-a-Thon” (for further details contact complit.info@umich.edu).

Latina/o Studies welcomes you for a conversation with Virginia Grise where she will discuss the developmental process of adapting Helena María Viramontes' novel Their Dogs Came with Them for the stage, a story about the destruction and displacement of a Mexican American community when six intersecting freeways are built right through the heart of the neighborhood. In 2018, Grise adapted and staged Their Dogs Came with Them at a medium security women’s prison in Goodyear, Arizona with a team of collaborators from both inside and outside the prison. Six months later, the play was staged site-specifically under the I-19 Freeway in Tucson, Arizona with a community cast of scholars, organizers and actors.

Virginia Grise is a recipient of the Yale Drama Award, Whiting Writers' Award, the Princess Grace Award in Theatre Directing, and the Playwrights’ Center’s Jerome Fellowship. Her published work includes Your Healing is Killing Me (Plays Inverse Press), blu (Yale University Press), The Panza Monologues co-written with Irma Mayorga (University of Texas Press) and an edited volume of Zapatista communiqués titled Conversations with Don Durito (Autonomedia Press).

In addition to plays, she has created a body of work that is interdisciplinary and includes multimedia performance, dance theater, performance installations, guerilla theater, site specific interventions, and community gatherings. Virginia has taught writing for performance at the university level, as a public school teacher, in community centers, women’s prisons, and in the juvenile correction system. She holds an MFA in Writing for Performance from the California Institute of the Arts and is the Mellon Foundation Playwright in Residence at Cara Mía Theatre in Dallas, Texas and a Matakyev Research Fellow at the Center for Imagination in the Borderlands at Arizona State University.

Navigating business relationships, particularly cross-cultural ones, can feel like moving through a minefield, sidestepping explosives that could instantly derail any progress. But it doesn’t need to be that way.

John Branch, professor of marketing and international business at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business and faculty for the school’s Cross-Cultural Business course, along with Amy Gillett, vice president of education at the William Davidson Institute at the University of Michigan and co-creator of the Business & Culture virtual exchange, advise both professionals and business students on increasing their cultural competency. On Nov. 16, they will host a candid and interactive session around maneuvering these cross-cultural relationships.

Join Branch and Gillett’s virtual discussion on cultural competency to share your stories of cultural gaffes and/or successes, discover what it takes to prepare for better cross-cultural interactions, and learn from the breadth of cultural exchanges that have gone wrong — and right — across the business world.

Organized By: Comparative Literature

Join us for this in-person conversation with philosopher/ activist Idris Robinson on social movements, resistance, and the George Floyd Uprising on Friday, December 3, 2021 @ 3:30pm in Mason Hall, Room 1449.

In the aftermath of the CHAZ occupation in downtown Seattle, Idris Robinson presented “How It Might Should Be Done”: a public talk intended to survey the horizon of revolutionary potential uncovered by the George Floyd Rebellion during the hot summer of 2020. The revised essay of the same title, published in Ill Will that August, is seen in radical circles as one of the definitive texts of the uprising. In ten putative theses, ranging from identity politics, the current pandemic, to the legacy of black revolt, “How It Might Should” sought to facilitate a more direct and focused discussion regarding the stakes of emancipatory transformation at the very heart of empire. Since the uprising, the crisis has only deepened, presenting new possibilities and dashing others: In this upcoming talk at the University of Michigan, Idris will both reassess and expand upon previous themes, such as a theorization of civil war as stasis, an examination of the abolitionist race-traitor through the lens of a political theology of martyrdom, and the libidinal death-drive suffusing American racial dynamics.

Idris Robinson is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Philosophy at the University of New Mexico. For over a decade, he has written extensively on revolt and crisis in both European and American contexts. In his properly academic research, he works towards cultivating an open and comparative approach that encompasses both contemporary Continental and Anglo-American philosophy, while remaining informed by insights from various pre-modern traditions. He is currently working on a dissertation on ontological realism, logical morphology, and the role of paradigms in the progression of Wittgenstein’s thought.

CGIS is kicking off the new year with a 2-day Fall & Academic Year Advising event where students can learn more about major-specific programs such as Ecology/Wildlife: Kenya & Panama Abroad to STEM: Ireland, UK, Hungary, & Scandinavia Abroad. We'll also have country-specific program sessions such as studying abroad in the UK and Australia. The LSA Scholarship Office will also be joining us both days to discuss the LSA Study Abroad Scholarship and to address any questions or concerns you may have regarding funding your study abroad experience! Choosing to study abroad during the fall or for the entire academic year provides a unique opportunity that allows you to not only enhance your language skills but to truly immerse yourself in a new culture. Take classes with local faculty and learn alongside other degree-seeking students, some of whom are also studying abroad! Establish a new way of life in another country and gain fresh perspective on how different parts of the world operate all while staying on track for graduation.

All credits are in-residence for LSA students and can count towards graduation requirements. Non-LSA students should speak with their advisors

On top of the multiple sessions we'll be offering, we'll also have open advising hours where you can speak with CGIS advisors, LSA Scholarship Office advisors, and various partners who will be happy to discuss various program options. First Step sessions will also take place both days. Keep in mind that attending a First Step session is a required step to the application process.

How do you translate, “they,” into French? For a group of men, “Ills,” and for a group of women, “Elles.” How do you refer to a group of people with a variety of genders in French? It’s still, “Ills.” But what about singular they? In French and many other gendered languages, there may not be official pronouns for those who don’t identify within the male/female binary. This brief explores gendered languages and provides tips on how to navigate language in an inclusive way.
