Are you a health researcher looking for genetic and clinical data, or do you need assistance in data analysis?

Precision Health’s new Analytics Platform is a suite of tools, services, and datasets available to researchers across campus--resources previously available only to Michigan Medicine faculty and other level-two password holders. The platform provides campus-wide access to research tools such as DataDirect and services such as consultation with scientific facilitators.

Attend a roadshow to learn how to access the platform and what you can do with it:

• Perform cohort discovery on a database of 4M+ patients
• Query a de-identified, structured dataset of ~60K patients
• Submit queries through the self-serve tool DataDirect
• Access output via a secure, HIPAA-compliant environment
• Request access to linked genetic data (with IRB approval)

Location: Michigan League
Organized By: Information and Technology Services (ITS)

Join us on Tuesday, November 19, at 6 p.m., for an exciting Dissonance event: Protecting Patient Privacy in Big Data. This panel discussion will take place in the Vandenberg Room, on the second floor of the Michigan League on the UM-Ann Arbor campus. There is no charge for this event and no need to register.

Electronic health records, connected medical devices, health tracking applications, and more have led to a tidal wave of medical data. How this data is being used to transform patient care, improve care quality and decrease healthcare costs, however, is not always evident. Michigan Medicine physicians and legal scholars will explore how medical care will change as digital health platforms evolve, the legal ramifications we might have to navigate, and the privacy and ethical issues that are unfolding today.

- Dr. Brahmajee Nallamothu, Professor, Michigan Medicine (moderator)
- Dr. Jessica Golbus, House Officer, Michigan Medicine
- Prof. Nicholson Price, Professor, U-M Law School

Profound and often confusing transformations have taken place in the last 20 years in the way the healthcare delivery system is structured. While not all of the changes are readily apparent to patients, an understanding of them can help consumers make sense of what has happened and understand what is likely to come. A key to making sense of these changes is to understand the shifts in financial risk that have occurred between insurers, providers, and patients. Instructor Azzolini will lead the class.

Making Prevention the Nation’s Top Health Policy Priority (February 24, 2020 11:15am) https://events.umich.edu/event/72657 72657-18035605@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, February 24, 2020 11:15am

In his new book, Prevention First – Policymaking for a Healthier America, Anand K. Parekh, MD, MPH, argues that disease prevention must be our nation's top health policy priority. Building a personal culture of prevention, he writes, is not enough; elected officials and policymakers must play a greater role in reducing preventable deaths. Drawing on his experiences as a clinician, public servant, and policy advisor, Dr. Parekh provides examples of prevention in action from across the country, giving readers a view into why prevention-first policies are important and how they can be accomplished. Throughout the book, he demonstrates that, in order to optimize health in America, we must leverage health insurance programs to promote disease prevention, expand primary care, attend to the social determinants of health, support making the healthier choice the easy choice for individuals, and increase public health investments. Prevention First not only sounds the alarm about the terrible consequences of preventable disease but serves as a rallying cry that we can and must do better in this country to reduce preventable deaths.

Anand Parekh is the Bipartisan Policy Center’s (BPC) chief medical advisor providing clinical and public health expertise across the organization, particularly in the areas of aging, prevention, and global health. Prior to joining BPC, he completed a decade of service at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. As deputy assistant secretary for health from 2008 to 2015, he developed and implemented national initiatives focused on prevention, wellness, and care management. Parekh is a board-certified internal medicine physician, a fellow of the American College of Physicians, an adjunct assistant professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University, and an adjunct professor of health management and policy at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. He has spoken widely and written extensively on a variety of health topics such as chronic care management, population health, value in health care, and the need for health and human services integration. A native of Michigan, Parekh received a B.A. in political science, an M.D., and an M.P.H. in health management and policy from the University of Michigan.

People living with cancer, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, chronic pain, and other health issues rely on it to ease their symptoms. The talk will focus on helping to better understand the science and use of cannabis as medicine as well as its relevance in the management of symptomatic COVID infection.

Our speaker, Dr. Connie McLaughlin-Miley is a pharmacist, clinician, educator and patient advocate. She completed her Pharmacy education at UM and a postdoctoral Fellowship in Health Economics and Outcomes Research with the University of South Carolina, Columbia and Glaxo-Smith Kline.
