T. Ayo Alston teaches and practices a signature theatrical style of West African drum and dance culture that captures the strength and power of women and community. Ayo is the founder, executive director, composer, and choreographer of Ayodele Drum and Dance, a performance training organization created for women to affirm their self-confidence and strength. Through Ayodele, she has performed, educated, fostered interpersonal healing, and created artistic work from a foundation of traditional African cultures fused with contemporary dance styles.

Throughout her career Ayo has taught, choreographed, and performed at schools and universities locally and nationally, as well as in African and Brazilian countries, as an independent artist and as a member of other companies and organizations, such as Dance Africa, Drum Cafe West, Le Bagatae Company of Guinea, Les Ballets Africans, and Muntu Dance Theatre.

In the last two years Ayo has been focused on fine-tuning and sharing her ability to compose music on African instruments, such as the kalimba. This resulted in her accepting a role as a lead actress in and musical composer for Mies Julie at Victory Gardens Theater and as a composer and musician for The Lion King Jr. at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM).

Ayo serves as an adjunct professor at Columbia College Chicago and on the Dance faculty at Chicago High School of the Arts. She also has developed drum and dance programs that are thriving in prestigious schools, such as Jones College Prep and Walter Payton College Prep, where Ayodele has trained dancers to teach and gain professional artistic skills and experience.

In the new virtual series, PERFORMING THE MOVEMENT, PERFORMING THE MOMENT, Center for World Performance Studies invites performers and scholars from diverse disciplines to reflect on how performance is being used to respond to the political, social, health and environmental crises that we face at this moment. Each guest will give a 30 minute presentation, and then engage in 30 minutes of Q&A. Sessions will take place over Zoom and require advance registration. You can read about the panelists, register for these events, find recommended reading and resources and/or request recordings of past events at https://lsa.umich.edu/world-performance.

If you require an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact the Center for World Performance Studies, at 734-936-2777. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

Chat with other grad students about classes they're taking or recommend, the MEMS certificate, funding opportunities, the best recent book in their field, etc. We'll mix up breakout rooms frequently, and you're welcome to pop in briefly or stay the hour.

Auditing for Bias in Resume Search Engines (November 2, 2020 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/78328 78328-20010766@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, November 2, 2020 4:00pm

There is growing awareness and concern about the role of automation in hiring, and the potential for these tools to reinforce historic inequalities in the labor market. I will present the results of an algorithm audit of the resume search engines offered by several of the largest online hiring platforms, to understand the relationship between a candidate’s gender and their rank in search results. We audited these platform with respect to individual and group fairness, as well as indirect and direct discrimination. I conclude with a brief discussion of the social and policy implications of our study.

Reported case-counts for coronavirus are wrinkled with data errors, namely misclassification of the tests and selection bias associated with who got tested. The number of covert or unascertained infections is large across the world. How can one determine optimal testing strategies with such imperfect data? In this talk, we propose an optimization algorithm for allocating diagnostic/surveillance tests when your objective is estimating the true population prevalence or detecting an outbreak. Infectious disease models and survey sampling techniques are used jointly to come up with these strategies

Students’ mobility patterns on campus and the implications for the recovery of campus activities post-pandemic (November 10, 2020 10:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/79204 79204-20231445@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, November 10, 2020 10:30am

This research project uses location data gathered from WiFi access points on campus to model the mobility patterns of students in order to inform the planning of educational activities that can minimize the transmission risk.
The first aim is to understand the general mobility patterns of students on campus to identify physical spaces associating with a high-risk of transmission. For example, we can extract insights from WiFi data about which locations are the busiest during which time of the day, how much time was typically spent at each location, and how do these mobility patterns change over time. The second aim is to understand how students share the same physical spaces on campus (e.g. attending a lecture, meeting in the same room, sharing the same dorm). Students are presumably in a close proximity when they are connected to the same WiFi access point. We model a student-to-student network from their co-location activities and use its network centrality measures as proxies of transmission risk (i.e. students in the center of a network would have a higher chance of getting exposed to COVID-19 than those in the periphery). We then correlate network centrality measures with academic information (e.g. class schedule, course enrollment, study major, year of study, gender, ethnicity) to determine whether certain features of the academic record are related to transmission risk. For example, we can identify which groups of students are more vulnerable to potential infections by associating with a high network centrality. Insights from this research project will inform the University of Michigan’s strategies for the recovery of educational activities post-pandemic with empirical evidence of students’ mobility pattern on campus as well as factors that associate with a high-risk of transmission.

Modeling the Perceived Truthfulness of Public Statements on COVID-19: A New Model for Pairwise Comparisons of Objects with Multidimensional Latent Attributes (November 10, 2020 10:50am) https://events.umich.edu/event/79205 79205-20231446@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, November 10, 2020 10:50am

What is more important for how individuals perceive the truthfulness of statements about COVID-19: a) the objective truthfulness of the statements, or b) the partisanship of the individual and the partisanship of the people making the statements? To answer this question, we develop a novel model for pairwise comparisons data that allows for a richer structure of both the latent attributes of the objects being compared and rater-specific perceptual differences than standard models. We use the model to analyze survey data that we collected in the summer of 2020. This survey asked respondents to compare the truthfulness of pairs of statements about COVID-19. These statements were taken from the fact-checked statements on https://www.politifact.com. We thus have an independent measure of the truthfulness of each statement. We find that the actual truthfulness of a statement explains very little of the variability in individuals’ perceptions of truthfulness. Instead, we find that the partisanship of the speaker and the partisanship of the rater account for the majority of the variation in perceived truthfulness, with statements made by co-partisans being viewed as more truthful.

The proliferation of digital information in all human experiences presents difficult challenges and offers unique opportunities of managing, modeling, analyzing, interpreting, and visualizing heterogeneous data. There is a substantial need to develop, validate, productize, and support novel mathematical techniques, advanced statistical computing algorithms, transdisciplinary tools, and effective artificial intelligence apps.

Spacekime analytics is a new technique for modeling high-dimensional longitudinal data, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). This approach relies on extending the notions of time, events, particles, and wave functions to complex-time (kime), complex-events (kevents), data and inference-functions, respectively. This talk will illustrate how the kime-magnitude (longitudinal time order) and kime-direction (phase) affect the subsequent predictive analytics and the induced scientific inference. The mathematical foundation of spacekime calculus reveals various statistical implications including inferential uncertainty and a Bayesian formulation of spacekime analytics. Complexifying time allows the lifting of all commonly observed processes from the classical 4D Minkowski spacetime to a 5D spacetime manifold, where a number of interesting mathematical problems arise.

Spacekime analytics transforms time-varying data, such as time-series observations, into higher-dimensional manifolds representing complex-valued and kime-indexed surfaces (kime-surfaces). This process uncovers some of the intricate structure in high-dimensional data that may be intractable in the classical space-time representation of the data. In addition, the spacekime representation facilitates the development of innovative data science analytical methods for model-based and model-free scientific inference, derived computed phenotyping, and statistical forecasting. Direct neuroscience science applications of spacekime analytics will be demonstrated using simulated data and clinical observations (e.g., UK Biobank).

Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) is a powerful tool in extracting spatio-temporal patterns from multi-dimensional time series. DMD takes in time series data and computes eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a finite-dimensional linear model that approximates the infinite-dimensional Koopman operator which encodes the dynamics. DMD is used successfully in many fields: fluid mechanics, robotics, neuroscience, and more. Two of the main challenges remaining in DMD research are noise sensitivity and issues related to Krylov space closure when modeling nonlinear systems. In our work, we encountered great difficulty in reconstructing time series from multilegged robot data. These are oscillatory systems with slow transients, which decay only slightly faster than a period.
Here we present an investigation of possible sources of difficulty by studying a class of systems with linear latent dynamics which are observed via multinomial observables. We explore the influences of dataset metrics, the spectrum of the latent dynamics, the normality of the system matrix, and the geometry of the dynamics. Our numerical models include system and measurement noise. Our results show that even for these very mildly nonlinear conditions, DMD methods often fail to recover the spectrum and can have poor predictive ability. We show that for a system with a well-posed system matrix, having a dataset with more initial conditions and shorter trajectories can significantly improve the prediction. With a slightly ill-conditioned system matrix, a moderate trajectory length improves the spectrum recovery. Our work provides a self-contained framework on analyzing noise and nonlinearity, and gives generalizable insights dataset properties for DMD analysis.
Work was funded by ARO MURI W911NF-17-1-0306 and the Kahn Foundation.

Natural language processing (NLP) and Data Science methods, including recently popular deep learning-based approaches, can unlock information from narrative text and have received great attention in the medical domain. Many NLP methods have been developed and showed promising results in various information extraction tasks, especially for rare classes of named entities. These methods have also been successfully applied to facilitate clinical research. In this workshop, we will highlight some methods and technologies to identify rare concepts and entities in text in the medical domain as well as other “open” domains.

Video is being acquired at an alarming rate across domains, including social research, healthcare, entertainment, sporting and more. The ability to code this video—attribute certain properties, labels, and other annotations—in support of analytical domain-relevant questions is critical; otherwise, human coding is required. Human coding, however, is laborious, expensive, not repeatable, and, worse, often error prone. Video coding, an area within artificial intelligence and computer vision, seeks automated and semi-automated methods to support more effective and robust video coding. This workshop will review the state of the art in video coding from a capabilities, limitations and tooling perspective and present real-world use-cases.

"The fire raced along the fuse line and incensed;
We rose to burn it all down."

Across the nation and the globe, we all-knowing and all-conquering human beings find ourselves - for lack of a better way to phrase it - in a corner. In the corner, on a universally ordered timeout like misbehaving children. We were sent from schools, workplaces, nightclubs, bars, and places to eat to our homes to wait, like Didi and Gogo in Becketts' Waiting for Godot— awaiting the arrival of Godot, who never arrives. We were sent home to wait for a safer moment in time for our collective existence, which has yet to come. Sent home to sit in timeout to reflect, reevaluate, and heal as a people and a nation. Dumbfoundedly, we watched the drafted news reports of lives lost to COVID-19 awe-struck by our leaders' indifference to the severity of the moment. Yet, with all those pots boiling over, we heard of a woman who lost her life when startled from slumber in Louisville, we watched one human-being gunned down while jogging in Georgia, and yet another human-being deliberately robbed of breath for 8m46sec in Minnesota. As if the death of all those individual lives lost to COVID-19 thus far were not enough, we return to extinguishing Black lives.

"As an Afro-Dominican American, it is interesting to exist in a world designed to erase your existence. As a brown-skinned actor, it is devastating to come to terms with my role in that process of self-erasure. I have navigated between theatrical parts that reinforce negative stereotypes and those that made me question if my performance training would be enough to overcome the cultural discrepancy between myself and the character. It is a question that most often comes up when assuming non-white character roles, which underscores my complicity in my self-erasure. When the color of one's skin and the racially discriminatory experiences lived is drowned by the loud narratives that support– despite evidence— that racism does not exist. What does one do? When one's cultural background is not enough to garner a role or bring authenticity and truth to a character of perhaps African American descent, what does the actor do? When does Black equate to one's culture, and when does it not? Why am I at first glance considered black and then by some not black enough? This presentation aims to address performing one's culture within the context of racial consciousness. Performing an Afro-Dominican-American in New York City."

Antonio Disla, aka Antonio Garcia, is an Afro-Caribbean Dominican-American theatre practitioner, born and raised in New York City. He holds an M.F.A. in Performance from The Ohio State University. Since 2012, Antonio has taught at State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz, in both the Department of Theatre Arts and the Department of Communication. As a Solo Artist, he has written and devised both site-specific and staged works dealing with identity and race. Of his works, the notables to date are Nobody, a solo piece about race, and Travel, which deals with identity and destiny. As a performing company member of The Shakespeare Forum, he has lead workshops in the New York City Public Schools and co-taught Shakespeare for their Youth Forum program. Antonio has proudly worked with The Black Lady Theater, an African American community theatre company based in Brooklyn, in such productions as From the Brought of Brooklyn and Bone Soup.

Novel Tools to Increase the Reliability and Reproducibility of Population Genetics Research (November 11, 2020 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/79208 79208-20231449@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 11, 2020 9:00am
Location: Off Campus Location

Advances in population genetic research have the potential to create numerous important advances in the science of population dynamics. The interplay of micro-level biology and macro-level social sciences documents gene–environment–phenotype interactions and allows us to examine how genetics relates to child health and wellbeing. However, traditional genetics research is based on nonrepresentative samples that deviate from the target population, such as convenience and volunteer samples. This lack of representativeness may distort association studies. Recent findings have provoked concern about misinterpretation, irreproducibility and lack of generalizability, exemplifying the need to leverage survey research with genetics for population-based research. This project is motivated by the research team’s collaborative work on the Fragile Family and Child Wellbeing Study and the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study, which present these common problems in population genetics studies, to advance the integration of genetic science into population dynamics research. The project will evaluate sample selection effects, identify population heterogeneity in polygenic score analysis, and develop strategies to adjust for selection bias in the association studies of educational attainment, cognition status and substance use for child health and wellbeing. This interdisciplinary project will strengthen the validity and generalizability of population genetics research, deepen new understandings of human behavior and facilitate advances in population science.

An end-to-end deep learning system for rapid analysis of the breath metabolome with applications in critical care illness and beyond (November 11, 2020 9:20am) https://events.umich.edu/event/79211 79211-20231452@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 11, 2020 9:20am

The metabolome is the set of low-molecular-weight metabolites and its quantification represents a summary of the physiological state of an organism. Metabolite concentration levels in biospecimens are important for many critical care health illnesses like sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Sepsis is responsible for 35% of patients who die in the hospital and ARDS has a mortality rate of 40%. Missing data is a common challenge in metabolomics datasets. Many metabolomics investigators impute fixed values for missing metabolite concentrations and this imputation approach leads to lower statistical power, biased parameter estimates, and reduced prediction accuracy. Certain applications of metabolomics data, like breath analysis by gas chromatography, used for the prediction or detection of ARDS, can be done without the quantification of individual metabolites. This would circumvent the quantification step of individual metabolites, eliminating the missing data problem. Our team has developed a rapid gas chromatography breath analyzer, which has been challenged by missing data, a time-consuming process of breath signature alignment, and the following quantification of metabolites across patients. Analyzing the breath signal directly could eliminate these challenges. End-to-end deep learning systems are neural networks that operate directly on a raw data source and make a prediction directly for the target application. These systems have been successful in diverse fields from speech recognition to medicine. We envision an end-to-end deep learning that leverages transfer learning, from the collection of many healthy samples, that could rapidly multiply the applications of our breath analyzer. The end-to-end deep learning system will enhance our breath analyzer so it could be used more efficiently in areas of the intensive care unit to the battlefield to identity patients or soldiers with critical illnesses like sepsis and ARDS and monitor longitudinal changes in breath metabolites.

Machine learning-guided equations for the on-demand prediction of natural gas storage capacities of materials for vehicular applications (November 11, 2020 9:40am) https://events.umich.edu/event/79212 79212-20231453@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 11, 2020 9:40am

Transportation is responsible for nearly one-third of the world’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emission because of burning fossil fuel. While we dream for zero-carbon vehicles, future projections suggest little decline in fossil fuel consumption by the transportation sector until 2050. Therefore, ‘bending the curve’ of CO2 emission prompts the adoption of low-cost and reduced-emission alternative fuels. Natural gas (NG), the most abundant fossil fuel on earth, is such an alternative with nearly 25% lower carbon footprint and lower price compared to its gasoline counterpart. However, the widespread adoption of natural gas as a vehicular fuel is hindered by the scarcity of high-capacity, light-weight, low-cost, and safe storage systems. Recently, materials-based natural gas storage for vehicular applications have become one of the most viable options. Especially, nanoporous materials (NPMs) are in the spotlight of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) because of their exceptional energy storage capacities. However, the number of such NPMs is nearly infinite. It is unknown, a priori, which materials would have the expected natural gas storage capacity. Therefore, searching a high-performing material is like ‘finding a needle in a haystack’ that slows down the speed of materials discovery against growing technological demand. Here we present a novel approach of developing machine learning-guided equations for the on-demand prediction of energy storage capacities of NPMs using a few physically meaningful structural properties. These equations provide users the ability to calculate energy storage capacity of an arbitrary NPM rapidly using only paper and pencil. We show the utility of these equations by predicting NG storage of over 500,000 covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), a class of NPMs. We discovered a COF with record-setting NG storage capacity, surpassing the unmet target set by DOE. In principle, the data-driven approach presented here might be relevant to other disciplines including science, engineering, and health care.

Space weather has impacts on Earth ranging from rare, immensely disruptive events (e.g., electrical blackouts caused by solar flares and coronal mass ejections) to more frequent impacts (e.g., satellite GPS interference from fluctuations in the Earth’s ionosphere caused by rapid variations in the solar extreme UV emission). Earth-impacting events are driven by changes in the Sun’s magnetic field; we now have myriad instruments capturing petabytes worth of images of the Sun at a variety of wavelengths, resolutions, and vantage points. These data present opportunities for learning-based computer vision since the massive, well-calibrated image archive is often accompanied by physical models. This talk will describe some of the work that we have been doing to start integrating computer vision and space physics by learning mappings from one image or representation of the Sun to another. I will center the talk on a new system we have developed that emulates parts of the data processing pipeline of the Solar Dynamics Observatory’s Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (SDO/HMI). This pipeline produces data products that help study and serve as boundary conditions for solar models of the energetic events alluded to above. Our deep-learning-based system emulates a key component hundreds of times faster than the current method, potentially opening doors to new applications in near-real-time space weather modeling. In keeping with the goals of the symposium, however, I will focus on some of the benefits close collaboration has enabled in terms of understanding how to frame the problem, measure success of the model, and even set up the deep network.

How do curatorial works and memorial sites simultaneously serve as tools for constructing national identities and as materials in a state’s claim for transnational reputation? How can we frame these questions in the context of post-dictatorial nations and their contested heritage? Looking at the two different cases of Ukraine and Spain, this presentation will unravel the multiplicity of ways in which cultural artifacts and narratives become the very sites for these discussions and crystalize the impact of these often violent legacies.
Co-presentation by Grace Mahoney (PhD candidate, Slavic Languages & Literatures) and Felix Zamora-Gomez (PhD candidate, Romance Languages & Literatures)

Globalization isn’t dead, but it increasingly has to do more with trading ideas and services than with moving metal containers stuffed with manufactured goods. This talk will discuss how globalization is changing and why.
Marc Levinson is an independent historian, economist, and journalist whose career has centered on making complex economic issues understandable to the general public. Marc spent many years as an economic journalist, including a turn as finance and economics editor of The Economist in London. Returning to New York, he worked as an economist for J.P. Morgan Chase, developing a unique industry economics function and then initiating the bank’s environmental research for stock and bond investors. He later served as a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. His books include the business classic The Box: How the Shipping Container Made the World Smaller and the World Economy Bigger; The Great A&P and the Struggle for Small Business in America, which won wide praise from across the political spectrum for exploring the tension between capitalism and competition in the U.S. economy; and An Extraordinary Time, showing how the sudden end of the postwar boom in the early 1970s led voters in many countries to turn away from activist government in favor of free-market ideas. He will be speaking about his latest book, Outside the Box, a lively history of globalization and its consequences.

This half-day workshop is geared toward data analysts with unstructured text data (e.g. open-ended survey responses or web-curated text), and will provide a tutorial on cleaning, processing, and analyzing data from text-based sources using state-of-the-art text analytics techniques primarily using Python, with some examples also provided in R (experience with either of these languages is recommended but not required).

Topics include:

* Preprocessing and cleaning messy text data
* Feature extraction using TF-IDF vectorization
* Text analytics techniques including topic modelling and unsupervised clustering methods
* Software demonstration featuring the scikitlearn library for Python.

TRACKING THE ‘MOOD’ OF U.S. MEDIA COVERAGE, 1990-2020 (November 23, 2020 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/79451 79451-20327786@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, November 23, 2020 4:00pm

Abstract: Survey research has for many years tracking the ‘mood’ of the country. That measure has been useful for understanding trends in economic and political behavior. But where does ‘mood’ come from? And are there other ways to capture the mood of the country? This presentation explores the potential for a media-based measure of mood, explored both as a driver and reflection of pubic attitudes. Media mood is estimating using automated content analytic techniques on a very large corpus of full-text news content. Time series analysis is used to explore differences across news outlets, and the relationship between media content and public opinion from 1990 to the present.

Impact of COVID-19 on Service Workers: Work Experiences & Concerns of food retail, food services, and hospitality workers (November 24, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/79384 79384-20288598@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, November 24, 2020 12:00pm

Marie-Anne Rosemberg is an assistant professor in UM's School of Nursing.
ABSTRACT
Objectives: COVID-19 presents a unique burden specifically for workers in service industries not only because they are disproportionately at risk for contracting the virus but also because of their work-related burdens. We aimed to understand the impact of COVID-19 on these workers.
Methods: This was a mixed-method study with a congruent triangulation design. Participants were recruited through social media. Each interview lasted up to 20 minutes. The survey data included demographic questions along with items from the CAGE and PC-PTSD questionnaires.
Results: Twenty-seven individuals completed audio-recorded phone interviews and 28 completed the survey. Participants were mostly women with an age range between 19 and 65. Participants worked in food retail (n=23), restaurant (n=25), and hospitality (n=7) industries. Length of time on the job ranged from two months to 25 years and 60% of the participants worked full time. Participants reported experiencing symptoms of depression and maladaptive coping. Job insecurity, change of job tasks, and work hours were the most common ways that COVID-19 affected the workers. Themes that emerged about participant’s concerns included being infected and/or unknowingly infecting others, the unknown, isolation, and work and customer demands. Constant changes relating to communication and protection measures were a major source of stress. There was discordance in the perceived level of threat of COVID-19. Most participants reported that their workplace complied with their state’s mandates for protection measures. While others reported lacking basic supplies such as soap, hand sanitizer, and masks.
Conclusions: In addition to their work experiences, COVID-19 has affected service workers at the financial, physical and mental levels. This study has implications of employers, occupational health and safety professionals and policy stakeholders.

CREES Noon Lecture. Curating Covid: Material and Visual Cultures of the Pandemic (December 2, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/79257 79257-20241311@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, December 2, 2020 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies

While there is so far no known cure for Covid and the disease continues to kill thousands daily around the globe, humanity has spent the better part of this year attempting to make do – some by doing their best to protect themselves and their loved ones as they continue to perform the work essential to their survival or deemed essential by society; others, by sheltering in place, reducing the radius of our daily activities, developing new routines. How will we know and remember all this? Who is the chronicler of Covid, who are its curators? What will be the sources, not of the political histories and for future medical research, but for narrating the pandemic as experience, for explaining its everyday reality to future generations?

This panel of brief presentations aims to prompt our collective thinking about a Covid archive, and how it will be constructed. Presenters from different disciplines and national backgrounds will be asked to share images or objects that bring our pandemic present into focus and allow us to explore together questions for the future: who is collecting what? What are the objects in which our daily experience materializes, and which might speak to the future? Where and how does the pandemic leave its traces in our visual cultures, and (how) do these differ depending on national contexts? The virus itself knows no borders, but can we discern transnational and global patterns in our responses in an increasingly fractured world?

SPEAKERS

Alexandra Arkhipova is senior research fellow and head of the Contemporary Folklore Monitoring Research Group at the School of Advanced Studies in the Humanities, Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration in Moscow, Russia. She is also a professor at the Russian State University for the Humanities and the Russian School of Economics. She is a leading expert on political jokes, rumors, and legends, on the concept of money in traditional society, and on the folklore of protest. Her research group is currently engaged in a multi-year study of “infodemia,” the World Health Organization’s term for the spate of false and potentially dangerous misinformation that flows through and infects the public discourse much like a viral pandemic. Dr. Arkhipova’s book *Dangerous Soviet Things: Urban Legends and Fear in the USSR,* written with Anna Kirzyuk, won the Liberal Mission Foundation’s 2020 Prize for the best analysis of current events.

Sara Blair is Patricia S. Yaeger Collegiate Professor of English at the University of Michigan. Her publications include *How the Other Half Looks: The Lower East Side and the Afterlives of Images*; *Harlem Crossroads: Black Writers and the Photograph in the Twentieth Century*; *Remaking Reality: U.S. Documentary Culture after 1945*, co-edited with Joseph Entin and Franny Nudelman; and *Trauma and Documentary Photography of the FSA*, co-authored with Eric Rosenberg. She has collaborated with curators at the DIA, the International Center of Photography, and the Addison Gallery of American Art, served as consultant to a range of photographic projects and exhibitions, and curated exhibitions at U-M’s Institute for the Humanities and the Middlebury Art Museum. Her current work focuses on the lives of the image as material object and aesthetic form from the advent of photography through the digital era.

Sarah Gensburger is a research professor in social sciences at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). Working at the intersection of memory studies, public policies analysis and micro-history of the Holocaust, she is the author of eight books. The most recent ones are *Memory on my doorstep. Chronicles of the Bataclan Beighborhood (Paris, 2015-2016)*; and *Beyond Memory. Can we really learn from the past?* (co-written with S. Lefranc). For some time now, she has also been developing public history and sociology projects such as the podcast collection "It Happened Here." Starting in April 2020, Gensburger developed the collaborative project "#Windows in Lockdown" in collaboration with Marta Severo, professor of media studies, University Paris Nanterre.

Alexandra M. Lord is chair of the Medicine and Science Division at the National Museum of American History and a curator of the history of medicine. She received her A.B. from Vassar College and her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She is the recipient of various fellowships, including most recently a Fulbright Fellowship, as well as awards for her book, *Condom Nation: The US Government’s Sex Education Campaign from World War I to the Internet*. She has spoken on the history of medicine in venues ranging from the History Channel to academic conferences, Planned Parenthood, and The PBS Newshour. Between 2016 and 2018, she was president of the National Council on Public History, the nation’s largest public history organization. Currently, she serves on the executive committee of the American Council of Learned Societies and the Landmarks Committee of the National Park Service.

Given the urgency of our times to promote social justice, Jay Crisostomo (MES, UM), Kristina Richardson (History, CUNY), and Bryan Roby (Judaic Studies, UM) will reflect on their experience of systemic racism, sexism, and homophobia in Middle East Studies. Much critique has been voiced by Ethnic Studies and Gender & Women’s Studies programs about structural inequalities in the academy, yet we have remained silent about the peculiar forms of discrimination that inhabit ME Studies. How can we raise awareness and practice social justice in our teaching, research, and professional activities? Join us for a conversation on intolerance in the field of Middle East Studies.

Like our students, no two STP major plans are alike.

THE CHANGING LANDSCAPE OF BIOMEDICAL DATA COLLECTIONS (December 21, 2020 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/79454 79454-20327789@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, December 21, 2020 4:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Data Science

Abstract:

The landscape of biomedical data is incredibly complex, rich, and rapidly changing, especially as we navigate the influx of data from the COVID-19 pandemic. More and more data is moving to the cloud, both existing and newly generated, with multiple cloud providers adding to the complexity. The data includes Electronic Health Records (EHRs), genomic data, and imaging/sensed data (e.g., pictures of tumors, lungs, cells, gas chromatographs), and all this data is enabling us to delve much deeper into complex biological concepts, for example, the relationship between phenotypes and genotypes. The NHLBI BioData Catalyst project is one example of a coordinated effort to move vast amounts of data into the cloud, navigating the complexities of data ingestion, diverse and widespread teams, and multiple cloud providers/environments.

On top of the massive shift to being able to apply huge amounts of data to better understand individuals, populations and, ultimately, life itself, we need a way to organize all this information. The activities in the NCATS Biomedical Data Translator project can be viewed as a constantly evolving analysis of the relationships of disparate data sets. In a sense, Translator is like Google for searching biomedical data.

My talk will introduce both projects and their respective impacts on biomedical research.

We will discuss Chapter 3: "Clare's Commonable Plants." Kindly RSVP to Sarah Van Cleve (srvc@umich.edu) to receive the pre-circulated reading materials.

Theresa Kelley's Clandestine Marriage delves into Romantic representations of botanizing culture, exploring in particular the role botany played in larger Romantic-era debates about life and the ability to know, categorize, and depict its various forms. The chapter we will read focuses on the unsettling perspective brought by John Clare's plant poetry; often considered a poet of place and of enclosure, Clare's refusal to use Linnaean plant names is characterized by Kelley as a small act of poetic and quasi-scientific rebellion. Kelley thus links what she calls "Clare's Commonable Plants" and his resistance toward what he saw as the authoritarian Linnaean system to a retroactive resistance to the similarly authoritarian system of enclosure and the damage it wrought on rural communities.

Still-life paintings of food look innocent at first sight, but were depictions of food merely delicious and pretty pictures to admire? Shana Klein's new book, "The Fruits of Empire," argues otherwise. This book talk will address Klein's research on representations of food to understand how they reflected and shaped conversations about race and national expansion in the United States. She will discuss the paintings, photographs, and silverware objects in the book and ask: Who do images of food serve? And at whose expense? The results are not always delicious.

Dr. Klein, Assistant Professor of Art History at Kent State University, is trained in the history of American art, with sub-specialties in African-American and Native-American art.

This episode was generously sponsored by Duane and Marilyn Kirking.

*The Clements Bookworm is a webinar series in which panelists discuss history topics. Recommended books, articles, and other resources are provided in each session. Inspired by the traditional Clements Library researcher tea time, we invite you to pull up a chair at our [virtual] table. Live attendees are encouraged to post comments and questions, respond to polls, and add to our conversation and camaraderie.*

Bodies represent the sites of socially constructed differences and power relations. As such, the personal is political, and bodies are subject to political interpretations. Body politics based on racial (and/or ethnic) ascriptions (along with other intersecting elements such as sex, gender, sexuality, age, social class, ability, etc.) have adversely affected the overall health and wellness of bodies of Color in general, and Black bodies in particular - impacting their abilities, opportunities, access (inclusion/exclusion), care/treatment, and the overall nature of their lived experiences. Consequently, racialed body politics have contributed to an array of health disparities being more pronounced in communities of Color. However, movement offers a variety of health benefits and is therefore, a source of empowerment for racially politicized bodies.

This event will feature a keynote presentation by Dr. Monique Butler, U-M Kinesiology alumna and Chief Medical Officer for HCA Healthcare North Florida Division. She will address the theme "Where Do We Go From Here: Body Politics and Movement Towards Racial Empowerment."

This event is sponsored by the U-M Health Sciences units and hosted by the School of Kinesiology.

To combat COVID-19, clinicians and scientists all need to digest the vast amount of relevant biomedical knowledge in literature to understand the disease mechanism and the related biological functions. The first challenge is quantity. For example, nearly 2.7K new papers are published at PubMed per day. This knowledge bottleneck causes significant delay in the development of vaccines and drugs for COVID-19. The second challenge is quality due to the rise and rapid, extensive publications of preprint manuscripts without pre-publication peer review. Many research results about coronavirus from different research labs and sources are redundant, complementary or event conflicting with each other.

Let’s consider drug repurposing as a case study. Besides the long process of clinical trial and biomedical experiments, another major cause for the long process is the complexity of the problem involved and the difficulty in drug discovery in general. The current clinical trials for drug re-purposing mainly rely on symptoms by considering drugs that can treat diseases with similar symptoms. However, there are too many drug candidates and too much misinformation published from multiple sources. In addition to a ranked list of drugs, clinicians and scientists also aim to gain new insights into the underlying molecular cellular mechanisms on Covid-19, and which pre-existing conditions may affect the mortality and severity of this disease.

To tackle these two challenges, we have developed a novel and comprehensive knowledge discovery framework, COVID-KG, to accelerate scientific discovery and build a bridge between clinicians and biology scientists. COVID-KG starts by reading existing papers to build multimedia knowledge graphs (KGs), in which nodes are entities/concepts and edges represent relations involving these entities, extracted from both text and images. Given the KGs enriched with path ranking and evidence mining, COVID-KG answers natural language questions effectively. Using drug repurposing as a case study, for 11 typical questions that human experts aim to explore, we integrate our techniques to generate a comprehensive report for each candidate drug. Preliminary assessment by expert clinicians and medical school students show our generated reports are informative and sound. I will also talk about our ongoing work to extend this framework to other domains including molecular synthesis and agriculture.

Facebook page.

Ayana Evans will talk about her trajectory of her work, including her new work of performance art for video "You Better Be Good to Me” (with performances by students from SMTD, the UM Cheer Team, and Detroit artists, and costumes by Dressing Up and Down students). "You Better Be Good to Me” will premiere as part of the program.

Ayana Evans is a NYC based performance artist who grew up on the south side of Chicago. The sensibilities of both locations heavily influence her work with the body, race relations, and gender bias.  Roberta Fallon, co-founder of Artblog, describes Ms. Evans as, “one part Wonder Woman, one part agent provocateur.” And writer Seph Rodney of Hyperallergic and the New York Times wrote: “I have seen [this] artist actually stop traffic on the Bowery in downtown Manhattan in 2016, where, in a floor-length lace gown, a dollar-store tiara and full makeup, she placed a chair in the street to do chair dips.”

Evans began her career as a painter earning her MFA from Tyler School of Art at Temple University and her BA in Visual Arts from Brown University. During the summer of 2016 Evans completed her installment of the residency, "Back in Five Minutes" at El Museo Del Barrio in NYC. The next year she completed a endurance-based 10-hour, citywide performance and 100-person performative dinner party at the Barnes Foundation in 2017 for "A Person of the Crowd,” a major performance art survey featuring artists such as, Marina Abramovic, Tania Bruguera, and William Pope L. in Philadelphia, PA. Her international work includes participation in: FIAP performance festival in Martinique, The Pineapple Show at Tiwani Contemporary in London, and Ghana's Chale Wote festival, which drew 30,000 people. Evans has received numerous fellowships and awards including: Studio Immersion Fellowship Program at EFA’s Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop (2018); Artists Alliance Inc (2018); Franklin Furnace Fund for performance art (2017-2018); New York Foundation of the Arts Fellow for Interdisciplinary Arts (2018); and an artist in resident for Art on the Vine at Martha's Vineyard (2019). In addition to her numerous guerilla street performances, Evans has performed at the Queens Museum, Crystal Bridges Museum, Newark Museum, and the Bronx Museum. During 2018 and 2019 Evans had three solo exhibitions with Medium Tings Gallery (Brooklyn), Cuchifritos Gallery (NYC) and the EFA Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop with New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) at Governors Island, NY. She has been featured in The New York Times, Bomb Magazine, ArtNet, The Cut, Hyperallergic, and CNN. Evans is currently an adjunct professor at Brown University.

During the Fall 2020 semester, Evans created a new work of performance art for video as part of the Stamps School’s Witt Visiting Artist program. A video of the performance "You Better Be Good to Me,” will premiere as part of the program.

COMPUTER VISION: WHO IS HELPED AND WHO IS HARMED? (January 25, 2021 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/79537 79537-20373074@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, January 25, 2021 4:00pm

Computer vision has ceased to be a purely academic endeavor. From law enforcement, to border control, to employment, healthcare diagnostics, and assigning trust scores, computer vision systems are being rapidly integrated into all aspects of society. In research, there are works that purport to determine a person’s sexuality from their social network profile images, others that claim to classify “violent individuals” from drone footage. These works were published in high impact journals, and some were presented at workshops in top tier computer vision conferences such as CVPR.

A critical public discourse surrounding the use of computer-vision based technologies has also been mounting. For example, the use of facial recognition technologies by policing agencies has been heavily critiqued and, in response, companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, and IBM have pulled or paused their facial recognition software services. Gender Shades showed that commercial gender classification systems have high disparities in error rates by skin-type and gender, and other works discuss the harms caused by the mere existence of automatic gender recognition systems. Recent papers have also exposed shockingly racist and sexist labels in popular computer vision datasets–resulting in the removal of some. In this talk, I will highlight some of these issues and proposed solutions to mitigate bias, as well as how some of the proposed fixes could exacerbate the problem rather than mitigate it.

Join us THURSDAY January 28 at 11:30 am for our first VIRTUAL SEMINAR of 2021.

Abstract:
During the COVID-19 pandemic, authorities must decide which groups to prioritize for vaccination in an evolving landscape where infection dynamics and population mitigating behavior are mutually connected in a feedback loop (i.e., human-environment interactions). Moreover, if we discover that vaccines prevent not only disease but also transmission, authorities must factor vaccine indirect protection (vaccine-generated herd immunity) into their considerations, which sometimes suggest a strategy of targeting groups that cause the most transmission. In this talk we will use a mathematical model to address the question: which age group should be prioritized for COVID-19 vaccination in order to prevent the most deaths? We developed an age-structured human-environment mathematical model for Ontario, Canada, where evolutionary game theory describes how population adherence to non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) responds to case incidence. Schools and workplaces are also closed and re-opened based on reported cases. We compared strategies of vaccinating 60+ year-olds first; <20 year-olds first; uniformly by age; and a novel contact-based strategy. The last three strategies interrupt transmission while the first targets a vulnerable group. The model shows realistic dynamics whereby case notifications, NPI adherence, and lockdown undergo successive waves that interact with timing of the vaccine program to determine the relative effectiveness of the four strategies. We identify a parameter regime where transmission-interrupting strategies are more effective in preventing deaths than prioritizing older age groups. We conclude that using SARS-CoV-2 vaccines to interrupt transmission may prevent more deaths than prioritizing vulnerable age groups, depending on the time course of the pandemic in a given population.

In this lecture, Kaan Üçsu (Istanbul University) deals with Abu Bakr al-Dimashqî’s geography through his translation of Joan Blaeu’s (d. 1673) Atlas Maior. The book was presented to Mehmed IV as a gift by the Dutch ambassador to Istanbul in 1668. Following it, Abu Bakr al-Dimashqî (d. 1691), a university professor and geographer, embarked on its translation, which would take roughly 10 years and result in a ten-volume translation and a summary translation of two volumes.

This lecture will locate the translation into a larger geographical literature within the Ottoman Empire and beyond.

You are invited to the new DSI’s research group, “The Digital Underground: Theory+Practice” (DIG-undr). "DIG-undr" is a project of the Tangent Lab, an open-ended research collective founded by Imani Cooper Mkandawire (DSI+Comparative Literature) and Irina Aristarkhova (DSI+Stamps School) to imagine and engender inclusive machines. Our group seeks to mine affinities and tensions between digital theory and various forms of practice (industry, art, design, activism), as well as the academy and its “outside” (the publics, the users, digital infrastructure).

The group will meet once a month in January, February, March and April 2021. This is an open research group and our first meeting will be on January 28, 2021, 2-4 pm on Zoom. At this first meeting we will discuss pressing research challenges related to theory+practice configurations, unique intellectual community around theory+practice collaborations at the DSI, and brainstorm a collective project. In Winter 2021, we are particularly interested in digital theory around AI, data science, machine learning, social robots, VR/AR and art, architecture, design and activism (democracy, racial justice, feminism, social change). Please see the poster attached herewith.

Tools for Futurist Thinking in the Social Sector with Deloitte’s Monitor Institute (February 3, 2021 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/81412 81412-20893776@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, February 3, 2021 3:30pm

The COVID-19 pandemic has created an environment of hyper-uncertainty for social sector organizations, as the economic crisis has weakened funders and nonprofits even as the demand for their assistance is skyrocketing. Many funders and non-profits have completed their initial round of emergency response to the crisis, but they are struggling to contemplate what they should do next.
To help social sector leaders confront this challenge, the Monitor Institute by Deloitte is using the tools of scenario planning—the well-tested methodology for thinking about the future pioneered by Deloitte’s Global Business Network group—to help both funders and operating nonprofits get on their front foot in preparing for the landscape on the other side of the COVID-19 crisis. While it isn’t possible to predict the future, this session will provide funders and operating non-profits with an understanding of the tools that can help them think about the critical uncertainties of the moment, reckon with the new “certainties” emerging from the pandemic, and think about how their strategies might (or might not) fit the different possible futures that may emerge in the coming months and years ahead.

ere.

The University of Virginia—designed by Thomas Jefferson and now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site—was built and maintained by 4,000 or more enslaved men, women, and children. UVA’s powerful new Memorial to Enslaved Laborers honors the lives, labors, and resistance of the enslaved people who lived and worked at UVA at some point between 1817 and 1865.

This interview with members of the memorial’s design team will explore the history, form, and process behind the creation of the memorial. Panelists: Mabel Wilson, Meejin Yoon, Eric Höweler, and Eto Otitigbe, with U-M's Kristin Hass as interviewer.

~   Eric Höweler, AIA, LEED AP,  is an associate professor in architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, where he teaches lecture courses and design studios with a focus on building technologies/integration. He is a co-founding principal of  Höweler + Yoon Architecture LLP, a research-driven, multidisciplinary design studio working between architecture, art, and media. HYA has a reputation for work that is technologically and formally innovative, and deeply informed by human experience, and a sensitivity to tectonics.

Eto Otitigbe is a polymedia artist whose interdisciplinary practice investigates the intersections of race, power, and technology. With history as the foundation for exploration, Otitigbe sets alternative narratives into motion; creating spaces for people to experience a unique mixture of concepts. Otitigbe lives and works in Brooklyn, NY where is an Assistant Professor and Head of Sculpture in the Art Department of Brooklyn College.

Mabel O. Wilson is the Nancy and George Rupp Professor of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, a professor in African American and African diasporic studies, director of the Institute for Research in African American Studies, and co-director of the Global Africa Lab at Columbia University. She is trained in architecture and American studies, two fields that inform her work. Through her transdisciplinary practice Studio &, Wilson makes visible and legible the ways that anti-black racism shapes the built environment along with the ways that blackness creates spaces of imagination, refusal, and desire.

J. Meejin Yoon, AIA FAAR, is an architect, designer, and educator, whose projects and research investigate the intersections between architecture, technology, and the public realm. Prior to joining the faculty at AAP, Yoon was at MIT for 17 years and served as the head of the Department of Architecture from 2014–18. Yoon is cofounding principal of Höweler and Yoon Architecture.

Kristin Hass is associate professor of American culture and faculty coordinator for the Humanities Collaboratory at the University of Michigan. She is the author of Carried to the Wall: American Memory and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (1998) and Sacrificing Soldiers on the National Mall (2013). Her fields of study include visual culture, material culture, museum studies, memory, and 20th-century cultural history.

This is the first in a series of annual Art and Activism lectures as part of High Stakes Art, a project designed to enhance exhibitions and programming at the Institute for the Humanities Gallery. High Stakes Art and this lecture are made possible by a generous grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Presented by the Institute for the Humanities and the U-M Arts Initiative.

The Future of Art Series is hosted by the U-M Arts Initiative as part of a two-year startup phase.

Dr. Putnam will present a talk on "Novel use for Scenario Simulation: Real Life Resiliency."

Stressful and realistic simulation scenarios are common, and considered beneficial for learners.

We used an Operating Room case-gone-wrong to examine the impact of stress and the emotional impact of clinical practice. Our project used physicians, clinical psychologist and an educational specialist to deliver a semi-structured debrief to residents. We evaluated their experience.
