Through a partnership with SMTD, Michigan Opera Theatre presents a new opera by American composer Ricky Ian Gordon with a libretto by Royce Vavrek. Travel back in time to the inspired gatherings at 27 rue de Fleurus in Paris, where American expatriates Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas hosted luminaries of art and literature such as Pablo Picasso, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Henri Matisse, and Ernest Hemingway. The opera explores themes of love, loss, change and art set throughout two world wars.

Encores are traditionally the “dessert” of a concert, called upon after a meaty program of sonatas and more savory repertoire. Sometimes they are whimsical little things, charming and sweet, other times full of fire, flash and virtuosity.

Mark your calendars for ‪Wednesday, March 7th‬ when violinists from the studio of Danielle Belen join with the collaborative pianists from the studio of Martin Katz in a fun evening filled with encore pieces.

Pianist and vocalist Mr. B., a.k.a. Mark Lincoln Braun, is a rare link to the first generation of blues and boogie-woogie pianists. Mr. B learned directly from Little Brother Montgomery, Boogie Woogie Red and Blind John Davis. He has performed coast to coast and throughout Europe, Canada, Mexico and South America. Percussionist Pete Siers has an international reputation for his intensely physical yet dynamically sensitive drumming, attention to detail, and mastery of many different styles. He has played Carnegie Hall, has toured Europe several times, and is a long-time favorite at many jazz festivals across the US.

In the early 1960s in New York City, the electronic composer James Tenney held a series of seminars on the offices of the Something Else Press. Working by day in the sound department of Bell Labs in New Jersey, Tenney was tuned in to the emerging capabilities of FORTRAN, a programming language, for artists. Artists programmed early computer music, graphics and poetry using Bell Labs mainframes with Tenney's inspired guidance. One of these projects, by Fluxus artist Alison Knowles, is called the House of Dust, and resulted in a 2000 long sequence of iterative quatrains. The program for the house continues to inspire experiments in architecture, poetry, performance and sound. This lecture introduces the seminar and its many outcomes and the House of Dust and its many materials.

This program is free and open to the public. Seating is first come, first served.

Augusta Read Thomas, one of today’s most acclaimed composers, joins U-M composer Roshanne Etezady for conversation about music, art, and the creative process. “Thomas' music… fairly explodes with an extroverted boldness of utterance audiences and musicians alike find challenging yet immediate” (Chicago Tribune).

SMTD students perform some of Thomas’ most intimate chamber works. This program is offered in conjunction with the UMMA exhibition 'Exercising the Eye: The Gertrude Kasle Collection,' which celebrates the pioneering gallerist, Gertrude Kasle (1917–2016), who was a key figure in the formation of Detroit’s contemporary art community in the 1960s and 70s. Kasle awakened local communities to the kind of avant-garde art she experienced in New York City and advocated for regional artists that she felt likewise broke with tradition.

The SMTD@UMMA performance series is generously supported by the Katherine Tuck Enrichment Fund and the Greg Hodes and Heidi Hertel Hodes—Partners in the Arts Endowment Fund.

Lead support for 'Exercising the Eye: The Gertrude Kasle Collection' is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Michigan Medicine, and the University of Michigan CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.

This talk examines the problem of iconic blues women who’ve been “lost” to history, Geeshie Wiley and Elvie Thomas, as well as the critics who’ve loved and chased after them. By placing the politics of queer archival studies and black performance theory in conversation with canonical blues historiographies, the talk will explore the aesthetics and cultural resonances of Wiley and Thomas’s rare recordings. It aims as well to trace a black feminist counter-history of record collecting and listening publics in order to tell a different story of blues lives that mattered.

Virtuoso harpists were at the center of early modern musical life in the Hispanic dominions on both sides of the Atlantic. They played for dances and accompanied singers, whether in churches or theaters. Harps were the principal basso continuo instruments into the eighteenth century. Early instruction books for harp printed in Spain are filled with notation for the popular dances of the day, dances whose patterns circulated widely. What can we learn from these dance forms for the working harp player, beyond the dances themselves? Largely unadorned in rhythm and melody, compared to dance settings for guitar and keyboard, they serve as the basis for other instrumental settings and as accompaniments for songs. They also inform us about both the social role of the harp and its effectiveness within the basso continuo ensemble.

Christa Patton, historical harpist and early wind specialist, has performed throughout the Americas, Europe, and Japan with many of today’s top early music ensembles, including Piffaro the Renaissance Band, Boston Camerata, The King’s Noyse, Folger Consort, Newberry Consort, Apollo’s Fire, Parthenia and ARTEK. As a baroque harpist specializing in 17th-century opera, Christa has performed with New York City Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, and Tafelmusik. She teaches on the faculty of Rutgers University and the Graduate Center at CUNY, and is musical director of the Baroque Opera Workshop at Queens College. Her artistry can be heard on the Lyrachord, Dorian, Navona and ATMA labels. Sponsored by the Stearns Collection of Musical Instruments and the Department of Musicology.

Aram and Virginia, an Armenian couple from the diaspora, transmit an ancestral tradition of chant which is in danger of disappearing to a troupe of European actors. During the process of creating a new play, the couple takes the company on a trip to Anatolia (also known as Asia Minor, bounded by the Black Sea to the north, South Caucasus and Iran to the east, the Mediterranean Sea to the south and the Aegean Sea and Sea of Marmara to the west) where the Armenian civilization has been destroyed. Along the way, the questioning of the actors brings to the forefront the wealth of this culture: the chant becomes a language of creation and sharing, the breath of life. It is a journey where the sounds, the music, the words, the bodies and the cries impart a memory and a future.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Armenian Studies

The evening will begin in the church sanctuary with the traditional Evening Service of the Armenian Apostolic Church, the Yeregoyan Jamerkutyun, which serves as a preparation for both the night ahead and for the following liturgical day. It includes the variable Hampartsi Sharagan, a cycle of hymns associated with Psalm 120 (121), which begins with the incipit: “I lift up mine eyes to the mountains. From there my help will come.”

By offering an Evening Service, the participants in the workshop will be able to experience in action the liturgical music that many of the papers and presentations address the day before. The Evening Service will be offered by the priests and deacons of the St. John Armenian Church, with the pastor Fr. Aren Jebejian presiding, and participation by the choir director Dn. Rubik Mailian and guest vocalist Dr. Aram Kerovpyan.

After the Evening Service there will be a short concert and musical description by the renowned Armenian musician, clarinetist Hachig Kazarian. Mr. Kazarian is a Julliard-trained musician with a Masters Degree in Ethnomusicology. He led the popular band the “Hye Tones” for many years, and has played with John Berberian and Richard Hagopian, among others. Mr. Kazarian will perform several Armenian songs, including a demonstration of a “folk” song with musical patterns similar to the Hamparsi Sharagan.

The evening will conclude with a round-table discussion on the state of Armenian music and the challenges of teaching various genres of Armenian music in the Diaspora. Participants will include Dr. Aram Kerovpyan, Dn. Rubik Mailian, and Hachig Kazarian.

Organized By: Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center (SAPAC)

The Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center's Survivor Empowerment & Ally Support (SEAS) Volunteer Program is now accepting submissions for the 13th annual rEVOLUTION: Making Art for Change art show!

We welcome all UM affiliated artists to submit their artworks to be displayed in our art show in rEVOLUTION: Making Art for Change. Art of any medium is welcome, including, but not limited to: painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, spoken word, and poetry. The themes of our show are gender, sexism, sexual violence, empowerment, and healing. The topic of sexual violence can include sexual assault, intimate partner violence, sexual and gender-based harassment, and stalking.

Healing is a process that works in different ways for different people. Creating and displaying art can prove very helpful as a way to promote healing. Artistic expression provides a medium to bring up and process emotions and experiences in a way that can be difficult to discuss otherwise.

Our goal with this event is to create and engage in a supportive community space for survivors where UM student allies and survivors will build empathy and an understanding of sexual violence and healing through the unique creative expression of survivor experiences and perspectives.

Please e-mail submissions to artrevolution@umich.edu and fill out this form (https://goo.gl/forms/CeVUxF7iRs9fQbPy1) by Monday March 19th! If your work is accepted, it will be displayed at the opening night of the art show the evening of April 6th. Opening night will be held from 6-9 PM in the East and West Conference Rooms on the fourth floor of Rackham Graduate School.

Modern analytic theory  partitions metric perturbations into displacements and grouping dissonances, whose respective prototypes are the Renaissance pre-cadential suspension and the Baroque pre-cadential hemiola. But the two categories frequently conjoin to form more complex hybrids: many pre-cadential hemiolas are inserted inside displacements, and the Brahmsian hemiolic cycle inserts a displacement inside of a hemiola. These hybrid formations are related to the formal category of parenthesis usually traced back to Koch (1792), but they have a more historically distant origin, in a 14th-‐century conception of syncopation: as a dialectic  not of displacement (Verschiebung) and restoration , but rather of fragmentation (Zerteilung) and reassembly. This paper suggests that this older conception of syncopation provides a framework for theorizing a variety of complex metric formations. Examples are provided from music of Beethoven, Brahms, Dvorak, and West African drum ensembles.

Wouldn’t it be nice if “getting the notes right” was all it took to deliver communicative, personal, spontaneous-seeming performances? Drawn, in part, from the thinking and writings of noted drama pedagogue and practitioner Konstantin Stanislavsky, and with applications to piano literature, we consider other roles a performer plays and how to develop them through thoughtful teaching.

How can the body be a laboratory for examining dialogue, choice-making, roles and habits? In this interactive workshop, choreographer and King-Chavez-Parks Visiting Artist Eryn Rosenthal will share some of her research on the connections between a dance form called Contact Improvisation and the political writings of Steve Biko, Ada Colau, Paolo Freire, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, Judith Butler, and others. What can the body bring to larger discussions of dialogue-building, inclusion, resilience and empowerment?

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that you can bend, move and stretch in. No experience necessary, and all bodies, abilities and backgrounds are actively welcome. This workshop includes talking, moving and listening.

Refreshments will be provided.

Choreographer and CEW Scholar Alum Eryn Rosenthal examines the democratic underpinnings of Contact Improvisation and the role of the body in transgressing previously legislated boundaries. She has worked with choreographers Sello Pesa, poet Elizabeth Alexander, and documentary theatre pioneer Anna Deavere Smith, among others. Eryn’s ongoing series The Doors Project investigates transitions–political, social, intimate–through site-based performance in different doorways around the world. Eryn holds a BA from Yale University and an MFA in Dance from U-M, where she also studied in the Ford School for Public Policy. She has performed and taught throughout the US, South Africa and Europe, and is currently teaching an interdisciplinary performance course at U-M's Residential College. She is delighted to be back at U-M as a King-Chávez-Parks Visiting Professor and Artist in Residence for Dialogue-Building, Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives. www.erynrosenthal.com

Craftsmanship is formed through a habitual interaction between practice and thinking. With constant experiment and refinement, one can build craftsmanship in electronic music composition and performance. In this lecture, Joo Won Park will share his experience in improving electroacoustic skills through strategic and conscious composition and practice routine.

Joo Won Park wants to make everyday sound beautiful and strange so that every day becomes beautiful and strange. He performs live with toys, consumer electronics, kitchenware, vegetables, and other non-musical objects by digitally processing their sounds. He also makes pieces with field recordings, sine waves, and any other sources that he can record or synthesize. Joo Won draws inspirations from swamps, skyscrapers, his two sons, and other soundscapes surrounding him. He has studied at Berklee College of Music and the University of Florida, and currently teaches Music Technology at the Wayne State University. Joo Won’s music and writings are available on ICMC DVD, Spectrum Press, MIT Press, PARMA, Visceral Media, MCSD, SEAMUS, and No Remixes labels.

Musicologist Annegret Fauser of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has won two major awards for her book, Sounds of War: Music in the United States during World War II. Fauser is the Cary C. Boshamer Distinguished Professor of Music and an adjunct professor of women’s and gender studies in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on music of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, in particular that of France and the United States. Tim Carter, the David G. Frey Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, has written prolifically about music in early modern Italy; Mozart’s Italian operas; and American musical theatre. He is particularly interested in honing historical, analytical, and critical tools to elucidate problematic works that forge new musical languages; the careful gathering and analysis of sources and documentary evidence; the elucidation of text–music relationships, with particular reference to the influence of poetic structures on musical form and process; and the embedding of contemporary performances (and performers) within surviving scores and the intertextual and performative issues that arise.

As The Los Angeles Times put it, “Krieger owns a world of technique-take that for granted. He always knows exactly where he is going and what he is doing. He never for instant miscalculates. He communicates urgently but with strict control. He is alert to every manner of nuance and at every dynamic level his tone flatters the ear.”
