Experience the sonic landscape of voice and viola da gamba: the rich bass of the cello, the colorful harmonies of the lute, and the warmth of the mezzo-soprano voice. The tradition of accompanying the voice with viola da gamba began in 16th century Italy and spread to England by the 17th century. Our program will feature some of the “Greatest Hits” of Italian and English songs of love, despair, and wit.

Lyracle is a new ensemble featuring current SMTD student James Perretta and alumna Ashley Mulcahy (voice).

Michigan songwriter Mike Vial writes songs about love and life's transitions, and his vocal style shows the influence of James Taylor and Ari Hest. But his accomplished guitar playing has a voice of its own, mixing elements of jazz, folk, and rock. Out on the road once more, Mike is taking Mike Gentry along for the ride. Mike started out playing guitar at Dexter High School, worked for years at A&M in Los Angeles, and came home to Michigan. He's appeared at Plymouth Coffee Bean, Black Fire Winery, Crazy Wisdom Bookstore and Tea Room, Dearborn Brewing, and many other venues. "I pitched to him the idea to tour together this summer like old folk artists did in the 60s!" Vial says. The Mikes will complete a tour of one-night stands with suitcases and guitars in hand, performing as solo artists and ending shows as a duo. Their musical partnership feels fated, since Gentry produced Vial’s latest record, the ambitious "A World That’s Bigger."

Brink began his carillon studies at Yale University with Ellen Dickinson in 2007; graduated with greatest distinction from the Royal Carillon School in Mechelen, Belgium in 2012; and studied further with Geert D’hollander at Bok Tower Gardens in 2015. He received first prize at the International Queen Fabiola Carillon Competition in Mechelen in 2014, and has toured North America and Europe extensively as a performer. Brink is regularly a recitalist at congresses of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America and the World Carillon Federation, most recently as a soloist with the Barcelona Municipal Symphonic Band in June 2017. He performed the inaugural recital at Salisbury University in September 2017. He released his first album, “Letters from the Sky”, alongside his performance at Chicago’s Ear Taxi Festival, in October 2016.

Brink is an award-winning composer for carillon, and works with graduate composition students in the University of Chicago’s Department of Music, under the direction of Augusta Read Thomas, introducing them to the art of composing for the bells. He is additionally interested in the design of practice carillons, and has published and presented on his work to improve the functionality and affordability of practice instruments. He and his wife, Vera Wünsche Brink, perform duet carillon recitals, and are avid outdoor enthusiasts, spending much of their free time camping, hiking, and canyoneering.

Roof is the bandleader for The Invasion, as well as an in-demand sideman on bass, guitar, or whatever instrument may be needed. For this show, he will be playing music of the British Invasion on guitar along with Ron Bozzi on bass and Donn Deniston on drums. Home and the people who make it have captivated Lori McKenna for years. Over the last three decades, as she became a wife and mother of five, she has also emerged as one of the most respected, prolific singer-songwriters in popular music. Her 2016 release The Bird and the Rifle netted three Grammy nominations, along with Americana Music Association nods––all firsts for McKenna as an artist. Then, she made history: In 2016, she became the first woman ever to win the Country Music Association’s Song of the Year two years in a row thanks to co-writing Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush” and penning Tim McGraw’s no. 1 “Humble and Kind” solo. Both songs also clinched back-to-back Grammy wins for Best Country Song. In 2017, she became the Academy of Country Music’s first female Songwriter of the Year. McKenna’s much-anticipated eleventh studio album, produced by Dave Cobb, takes one of McKenna’s signature themes––family––and builds a tapestry of experiences she has lived and overheard, been told and dreamed up, to create a stunning ode to life’s defining relationships.

The Tartan Terrors are not a band but, in the words of the organizers, "North America’s premiere Celtic Event, featuring the best in music, comedy and dance." Amazed by the blistering chops of a two-time world champion bagpiper, the driving tones of drums from around the world, and a guitar played unlike any you’ve ever heard, standing-room-only audiences come to understand why Dig This magazine declares the Terrors "one act to keep an eye on!" Combine all the music with championship-caliber Highland Dancers and internationally recognized comedic performers, and this Celtic group goes beyond the ordinary. Members of The Tartan Terrors have performed on four different continents; in some of the most prestigious festivals, Highland Games, and theaters in North America, for a U.S. president and Britain's Queen, and on Good Morning America. Experience the phenomenon of the Tartan Terrors and see why Celtic Beat hails them as "the heirs apparent to the mayhem"!

Warren & Flick explore the nuanced textures of a two-person band. Using both original material and standards from many genres that they have arranged in a personal style, the group finds new depth in the simplicity of the duo. Jacob Warren plays double bass, while Grant Flick plays violin, tenor guitar and mandolin. Currently based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan, the two met at the 2015 Acoustic Music Seminar (AMS), a program accepting only sixteen young string players from around the world to participate in a week of intense improvisation, composition, and performance training. A part of the Savannah Music Festival in Georgia, AMS is led by multi-instrumentalist Mike Marshall with the help of guitarist Julian Lage.

After discovering their shared musical interests, Jacob and Grant began collaborating as a duo as well as in larger projects including “The Leafless” and “Westbound Situation,” both comprised of former AMS participants. Jacob and Grant attend University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, & Dance, where they spend much of their time arranging, composing and performing together. With Jacob’s classical foundation and Grant’s experience in bluegrass and jazz, their contrasting backgrounds give them a unique and compelling musical narrative.

"It’s all rock & roll—no golf!" is how acclaimed singer/songwriter/violinist Amanda Shires describes her electrifying fifth album, To The Sunset. She’s borrowed a lyric from the effervescent track “Break Out the Champagne,” one of ten deftly crafted songs that comprise her powerful new recording. The Texas-born road warrior, new mom, and recently minted MFA in creative writing has mined a range of musical influences to reveal an Amanda Shires many didn’t know existed. “Isn’t it refreshing?” Amanda asks. Indeed. Distorted electric guitars, effects pedals, swirling keys and synths, and rockin’ rhythms certainly suit Shires’ visceral songcraft and lilting soprano. Amanda is renowned for her carefully crafted, evocative songs. Her influences include Leonard Cohen and John Prine, the latter a mentor. Amanda says she also uses songwriting as a way to "get through my own emotional stuff, which is cheaper than a therapist." Kentucky-born songwriter Leah Blevins is special guest.

This one-hour concert celebrates America’s diversity, both ethnic and religious. Performers include SMTD faculty Caroline Helton, Carmen Pelton, Scott Piper, George Shirley, and Louise Toppin, and SMTD alumni Rikki Morrow-Spitzer, Benjamin Sieverding, Kira Slovacek, and Kimberly Haynes Stephens. SMTD Professor Timothy Cheek will serve as pianist.

Reading the source material that inspired each piece, religious leaders on the concert will be Rabbi Sara O'Donnell Adler, Chaplain, U-M Michigan Medicine, Imam Kamau Ayubbi, Chaplain, U-M Michigan Medicine, Rev. Fr. James P. Conlon, Pastor, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Ann Arbor, and Rev. Susan Schilperoort, retired Minister, Presbyterian Church USA.

While in New York in 1894, Czech composer Antonín Dvořák composed his cycle of 10 Biblical Songs for voice and piano, set to various verses from the Book of Psalms in the Old Testament. Each song on this celebratory concert will be sung in the original Czech but preceded by an oral English translation of the particular psalm–recited, in turns, by a Catholic priest, a Jewish rabbi, a Muslim Imam, and a Protestant minister, as well as SMTD Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer Freyja Harris.

The concert also celebrates ties between Czech composer Antonín Dvořák and the USA, as he taught for several years at the National Conservatory in New York City, and was the first to advocate for basing a national musical style on Negro Spirituals and Native American music at a time when American composers were looking to Europe for their model. Lastly, the concert also celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Czechoslovakia in 1918.

Prisoner's Song, a critically acclaimed multimedia performance about the experience of the incarcerated in America, will be presented at four different Detroit venues this September, free of charge and open to the general public. University of Michigan's Center for World Performance Studies presents a Performance Talk with Gelsey Bell and Erik Ruin, on Tuesday, Sept. 18th at 6pm. Prisoner's Song is the recipient of a Knight Arts Challenge Grant.

Prisoner’s Song is an hour-long performance comprised of ten chapters based on various primary sources, approached in an array of performance styles. The performance, by New York-based composer Gelsey Bell and Philadelphia-based (and Detroit-raised) visual artist Erik Ruin, uses shadow puppets, projections, and a variety of musical idioms to portray the prison experience. For instance, the 19th-century British folk ballad “Adieu To All Judges and Juries” tells the tale of a woman yearning for her lover who has been forcibly exiled, set to an original arrangement by Bell and illustrated by an intricate paper-cut scroll 10.5 feet in length. In contrast, an inventory of prisoners’ personal possessions from the Eastern State Penitentiary in the 1930s is performed as an abrupt sequence of voices and percussion, with the silhouettes of found objects starkly flickering across the screen.

By drawing on historic ballads, poetry, audio interviews with people who have spent time in prison, and other primary sources, Prisoner's Song allows audiences to encounter the states of mind and heart that prison engenders. The New York Times calls Prisoner’s Song“uncomfortably powerful … evoking the restrictive and impoverished reality of incarceration even as it pays tribute to the resilience, ingenuity and poetry that can transcend it.”

Prisoner's Song is presented free through the contributions of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Carrie Morris Arts Production, the U-M Center for World Performance Studies, the U-M Prison Creative Arts Project, Power House Productions, and through the generosity of many individual donors.

Have you ever wondered what makes different styles of music unique? We will explore distinctive musical genres to understand the essence of their style and appeal.

The first meeting will describe what makes music “western”, describing the sonic power of chords. They create anticipation and prediction in any type of western music and you will hear examples drawn from classic folk and popular music. The second session will explore Indonesian golden gong sounds, in which time cycles guide the audience through many layers of sound. The third class will cover Japanese noh drama music, which is characterized by the horizontal drive of drum patterns that equal vertical western chords.

Instructor William Malm is a Professor Emeritus of Music from the University of Michigan. He is the founder of the World Music Program and Director of the Stearns Collection of Musical Instruments. This study group for those 50 and above will meet on Fridays, 10-11:30, from September 21 through October 5.

Zhou Family Band attracted international attention through their first Europe tour in 2017, which brought them to five countries and prestigious festivals such as World of Music, Arts and Dance festival (WOMAD). Hailed for its “tremendous energy” by BBC, regarded as “China’s avant-garde” by The Guardian, and selected by SOAS Radio as one of its five favorite acts from the 2017 WOMAD, Zhou Family Band presents an authentic Chinese tradition.

Zhou Family Band (周家班) plays traditional wind and percussion music that have accompanied birth and death celebrations of people in Central-Eastern China for more than 600 years. Coming from Lingbi, Anhui Province, part of the Central Plain area which formed the cradle of Chinese civilization, the Zhou family has been musicians for seven generations, and are bearers of a tradition that represents the cream of Chinese folk music – Bolin Laba, a national intangible cultural heritage of China as declared by UNESCO.

Pre-concert conversation with Judy Bozone, Danielle Gonzalez, and Michael Haithcock at 7:15 PM in the lower lobby.

Four movements of Mozart’s “magnificent and sublime” Gran Partita recall the work’s premiere in 1784. This timeless classic is contrasted with the premiere of a composition by Judy Bozone, a recent U-M alumna, based on her recollections of living in Thailand. Higdon’s Percussion Concerto exploits the traditions of the classical concerto form infused with her award-winning compositional language. Premiered in Hill Auditorium in 1967, Nelson’s Rocky Point Holiday was an instant classic and has been an audience favorite for more than half a century!

PROGRAM: Mozart- Serenade No.10 “Gran Partita”, Mvt. 1, 3, 4, and 7; Judy Bozone- Spilled Orange (premiere performance); Jennifer Higdon- Percussion Concerto, Danielle Gonzalez, soloist; Ron Nelson- Rocky Point Holiday

Events of recent history have clearly demonstrated to us how little we have progressed in the areas of social justice - justice for women, justice For sexual orientation, justice for race and creed are to name but a few of these areas which seem to populate newspaper headlines, television news feeds and social media. The church triumphant cannot remain mute in the face of these societal ills and issues, but must stand strong and with a clear voice proclaim justice for all - justice for all creation. This hymn festival will present a variety of hymns which address these issues with texts written by women poets and authors as well as settings by women composers. It will be our hope to present the best of what these voices have to offer for the edification of all who hear their words and music.

The Dance Legacy Project—Doris Humphrey at Michigan—is a new faculty initiative directed by SMTD faculty Jillian Hopper and Christian Matijas-Mecca. This year’s program will feature three dances created by one of the pioneers of American Modern Dance, Doris Humphrey.

Air, Brandenburg Concerto #4, and Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor, will be performed at Hill Auditorium in collaboration with Professor James Kibbie, the U-M Organ Department, and the Baroque Chamber Ensemble under the direction of Professors Joseph Gascho and Aaron Berofsky. This concert will be the first presentation of all three dances on the same program, accompanied by live music in Bach’s original scoring.

A cast of 31 dancers from U-M and Eastern Michigan University will perform the works on the final concert of the 58th Annual U-M Organ Conference in a first-of-its-kind collaboration between the Organ and Dance Departments.

Sandor and Laszlo Slomovits are Ann Arbor’s nationally known folk music duo, Gemini. However, when they are joined by San’s daughter Emily, they are called Gemily! The trio has a wide ranging repertoire, from classic songs of the 60s to traditional folk songs and dance tunes, as well as their own sparkling originals. Sung with unique three-part family harmonies, and accompanied by nearly a dozen instruments, their music is at once soothing and invigorating. Look for live stream video on Gifts of Art Facebook.

Organized By: Nam Center for Korean Studies

In early 1982, a group of writers, labor activists, and musicians gathered at a remote house in the southwestern city of Kwangju. Under the watchful eye of Chun Doo Hwan’s military dictatorship, the group clandestinely performed and recorded “March for the Beloved” (Im ŭl wihan haengjingok), a song to honor the “soul marriage” of late activists Pak Kisun and Yun Sangwǒn. Born in a city that had yet to recover from a brutal massacre of civilians staged by the military state in May of 1980, the song moved vastly beyond its original intent of commemorating those massacred and consoling the bereaved. Over the decades to follow, the song would emerge as the most powerful and widely sung anthem for counter-state movements, often finding itself at the center of much controversy over how to remember the tumultuous 1980s. This paper examines the bizarre twists and turns the song has undergone since its original inception, as occasions for thinking about the culture of protest and the politics of memory that shape the legacies of democratization in South Korea.

Susan Hwang is Assistant Professor of Contemporary Korean Literature and Cultural Studies in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Indiana University. Her current research focuses on the changing relationship between literature and politics from the 1960s to the present in South Korea.

Professor Stein's abstract:

“The pervasive influence of popular dance-songs in early modern Hispanic literature and colonial cultures has long been recognized by literary and musical scholars. Hundreds of plays, stories, and text booklets for vernacular sacred villancicos call for them. Musicologists have focused primarily on analyzing form and genre, finding and listing musical sources, categorizing poetic texts, and generally describing their broad cultural context.

In this paper, I focus on dance-songs that were incorporated into sacred music performed across the Hispanic dominions, despite their repeated condemnation and prohibition. Their tunes, rhythms, and harmonic patterns (made especially clear to us in solo instrumental settings) were distinct and recognizable to all kinds of listeners. They communicated meaning through their very musical materials, not merely in their sung texts.

My recent research has uncovered what might be the key to understanding the paradoxical value of these dance-songs to seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century ecclesiastical authorities. Many describe, execute, facilitate or narrate the violation of feminine spaces, womanly precincts, female privacy, and even the female body. My presentation moves from a sacred play by Miguel de Cervantes about a conversion in the Americas to provocative excerpts from sacred villancicos composed in Spain, colonial New Spain (Mexico), and colonial Latin America. The paper will be illustrated with both audio examples and visual evidence presented via slides.”

The talk is part of the Rackham Interdisciplinary Workshop on "Religion in the Atlantic World."

This year's Carrigan Lecture will take place during the Big Ten Academic Alliance Conference for Music Education. The theme of the conference is "Tradition and Innovation in Dialog." Eric Shieh will probe our conception of music education as a singular kind of tradition, and will describe innovative music education communities where several musical or pedagogical traditions are sharing space, often with little precedent.

Eric Shieh is a founding teacher and curriculum leader at the Metropolitan Expeditionary Learning School, “A School for a Sustainable City,” in New York City. As part of his work there, Eric co-led a national two-day site seminar in 2018 for eighty educators and administrators from across the country on the school’s innovative curricular designs. He is also a former policy strategist for the New York City Department of Education and has founded and led music programs in prisons across the U.S.

In addition to his work with schools, Shieh writes and presents regularly on issues related to education policy, social justice, and music curriculum. His recent research can be found in Arts Education Policy Review, Oxford Handbook of Social Justice in Music Education, Action, Criticism, and Theory for Music Education, and Music Educators Journal. His essays and editorials can be found in The Hechinger Report and The Washington Post. NOTE: Please join us for "Blue Moon Over Memphis" at the Power Center on Friday, October 12, 2018 at 7pm.

In preparation for the English-language Noh performance at the University of Michigan of "Blue Moon Over Memphis" (BMOM), a story based on the legendary Elvis Presley, this talk examines how Noh can be created and performed in languages other than Japanese, what aspects BMOM has maintained or adapted from tradition, and how this version deviates from tradition. This talk posits that English-language Noh has become an entry point into Noh for audiences, and that its composers have created English-language Noh text-music conventions. BMOM reveals the flexibility of the Noh form and how it can accommodate innovative musical elements in English.

Mariko Anno is Associate Professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology. She earned a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from Tokyo University of the Arts and a D.M.A. in Flute Performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research examines Japanese Noh drama in a contemporary transnational context through English-language Noh.

Blue Moon Over Memphis is a stark and beautiful meditation on loneliness, with numerous textual and musical allusions to 20th-century popular song.

Judy is a lonely, middle-aged woman, and a devout Elvis fan. She makes a pilgrimage to Graceland on the anniversary of Elvis's death, but she is forced to wait outside due to the overwhelming crowds. Her dream shattered, she is left to reflect on her life. But then, during the candlelight vigil, a mysterious man lets her into the Meditation Garden where Elvis is buried, and there, under the light of a blue moon, she encounters a spirit...

The Dodworth Saxhorn Band, America’s premiere 19th century brass band, will present a lecture demonstration concert as a part of the Virginia Martin Howard Lecture Series. This concert will focus on the instruments and music of America in the mid-19th century, a time of great development for brass instruments.

Modeled after the original Dodworth Band of New York, the premier American brass band from the 1840s to the 1880s, today’s Dodworth Saxhorn Band recreates the direction and passion of the brothers Allen and Harvey Dodworth. In attire authentic to the 19th century, they perform the lost music of America, telling stories and singing songs about issues from the middle 1800s that are not fully resolved today.

Based in Ann Arbor, the Dodworth Saxhorn Band is a nationally recognized group that has performed at the White House at the invitation of President Clinton and whose music can found on Ken Burns’ productions Baseball and The Roosevelts: An Intimate History.

An extended radio interview with Stearns Collection Director, Professor Lester Monts, and members of the Dodsworth Players will air on WAAM'S "Speaking of Arts " program on Oct. 13, 3:00-4:00 pm.    Listener Call-In (734) 822-1600; Website: www.speakingofartonline.com

The 2018-19 Virginia Martin Howard Lecture Series, sponsored by the Stearns Collection of Music Instruments, features presentations by distinguished international scholars and performers focus work in the areas of ethnomusicology, historical musicology, and organology. Lecture topics range from instrument restoration and conservation to African one-string fiddles to vintage music synthesizers.

Tracing the deconstruction of the Adornian dialectic between generic convention and particular expression—between proper and improper, and propriety and impropriety—Waltham-Smith develops a theory of use and over-use to explain the ways in which composers and listeners relate to musical material. Another look at Haydn’s playful (mis)use of cadential formulas and at processes of cadential liquidation in late 18th-century repertoires can shed light, it is argued, on listening’s imbrication in the psychotechnological capture and manipulation of affective labor under neoliberalism today.

In recent years, scholars and pundits have begun talking about a “democratic recession.” For the first time since the early 2000s, the rate of democratic expansion worldwide has slowed and even receded. Some of the reasons suggested for this recession have been a disillusionment with the prevailing democratic models that, for all their benefits, often limit popular participation. The banner of participatory democracy has been hoisted by social movements, by scholars from different disciplines and has also made an appearance in cultural production. This conference proposes to look into what role culture plays in broaching possible crises of the democratic model, how culture participates in the discussion of current democratic models in the cultural and linguistic spheres, and how culture can strengthen and/or expand democracy. The concept of democracy is understood here as a broad umbrella theme that implies different paradigms of belonging and social inclusion and applies to various disciplines.

Keynote speakers will include: Alexandra Lucas Coelho (Portuguese writer), Luiz Ruffato (Brazilian writer), Sidney Chalhoub (Brazilian historian, Harvard University), and Kalaf Epalanga (Angolan-Portuguese writer and musician)

In the early 1930s, jazz artists like Jack Teagarden, Billie Holiday, Django Reinhardt and Lonnie Johnson graced the stages and ballrooms of America. Ballads, melancholy and blue, and hot tunes, laced with exciting improvisation, told stories of tragedy and joy and provided dancers with rhythm. Ray Kamalay and his Red Hot Peppers are reminiscent of this era. They have wowed audiences at some of the finer venues in North America, including Interlochen and the Philadelphia Folk Festival. Ray Kamalay, on guitar and vocals, will be joined by Phil Kelly on piano, and Kurt Krahnke on bass. Look for live stream video on Gifts of Art Facebook.

Old legends, nature, and poetry combine with masterful music in three remarkable orchestral works to be performed by the University Philharmonia Orchestra. The breathtaking image of Scottish landscapes and an eventful visit to Fingal’s oceanic cave inspired young Mendelssohn to write the Hebrides Overture, his most famously haunting orchestral piece often considered a predecessor of a tone poem. Two great examples of that same genre will complete the program: Webern’s Im Sommerwind (In the Summer Wind), a very suggestive and beautiful early work that the composer himself never heard, and The Golden Spinning Wheel, Dvořák’s prominent tone poem and one of his last and most mature orchestral compositions.

Keynote speakers will include: Alexandra Lucas Coelho (Portuguese writer), Luiz Ruffato (Brazilian writer), Sidney Chalhoub (Brazilian historian, Harvard University), and Kalaf Epalanga (Angolan-Portuguese writer and musician)

The full conference schedule and registration information are available on the APSA website:

Join Dr. Michael Ochs, musicologist and retired music librarian from Harvard University, as he reintroduces the genre of Yiddish operetta to the modern public. Di goldene kale (The Golden Bride) incorporates elements of klezmer, Jewish cantorial music, Eastern European folk music, ragtime, and jazz. It was wildly popular among the large Yiddish-speaking population of New York City when it premiered in 1923, and it reached national and international audiences with companies that toured until the 1940's. Ochs's presentation will include recorded excerpts from historic and modern productions of the operetta, as well as live performances of signature numbers by SMTD students. This event is co-sponsored by the Jewish Community Center of Ann Arbor and the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies.

Michael Haithcock, conductor
Annie Jeng, piano

Pre-concert conversation with Annie Jeng, Joel Puckett, and Michael Haithcock at 7:15 PM in the lower lobby.

Each piece to be performed was inspired by a literary or artistic source that motivated the composer. An apocalyptic vision of heaven inspired Messiaen, a devout Catholic. Puckett’s work was inspired by a quotation from Herman Hesse’s Siddhartha. Mussorgsky composed his Russian masterpiece for piano, inspired by a friends’ artistic renderings, as a memorial tribute. Paul Lavender’s transcription for band majestically captures Ravel’s brilliant orchestral setting.

PROGRAM: Messiaen- La Ville d’en Haut (The City on High), Annie Jeng, soloist; Joel Puckett- Adagio Symphony “that secret from the river;” Mussorgsky/Lavender- Pictures at an Exhibition
