In The Globally Familiar Ethiraj Gabriel Dattatreyan traces how the rapid development of information and communication technologies in India has created opportunities for young people to creatively explore their gendered, classed, and racialized subjectivities in and through transnational media worlds. His ethnography focuses on a group of diverse young, working-class men in Delhi as they take up the African diasporic aesthetics and creative practices of hip hop. Dattatreyan shows how these aspiring b-boys, MCs, and graffiti writers fashion themselves and their city through their online and offline experimentations with hip hop, thereby accessing new social, economic, and political opportunities while acting as consumers, producers, and influencers in global circuits of capitalism. In so doing, Dattatreyan outlines how the hopeful, creative, and vitally embodied practices of hip hop offer an alternative narrative of urban place-making in "digital" India.

Join us for a lecture and discussion with distinguished acoustic bassist, Marion Hayden on Thursday, March 11th at 6 pm EST!

The city of Detroit's rich musical history has forever shaped popular music in the United States. The migration of jazz musicians to Detroit in the 1920s and 1930s caused the area to develop its own thriving music scene. By the 1960s, the area became known for the first black owned record label, Motown. Today, the name "Motown" is synonymous with funk and soul music.

Detroit was home to some of the most important events of the 1960s and 1970s Civil Rights Movement. Consequently, jazz musicians in Detroit have witnessed music's role in shaping race relations within the city and across the United States.

Join us for this lecture and discussion, where Marion Hayden will tell of her experiences as a bassist in Detroit. With her deep knowledge of the city's musical history, learn how Motown and jazz were musical vanguards in altering to the social landscape of Detroit, Michigan, and the United States.

>> About Marion

Born in Detroit, MI, a crucible of jazz, Marion Hayden is one of the nation’s finest proponents of the acoustic bass. Mentored by master trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, Hayden began performing jazz at the age of 15. She has performed with such diverse luminaries as Bobby McFerrin, Nancy Wilson, Geri Allen, Regina Carter, Steve Turre, Lester Bowie, David Allen Grier, James Carter, Dorothy Donegan, Joe Williams, Lionel Hampton, Frank Morgan, Jon Hendricks, Hank Jones, Bobby Hutcherson, Larry Willis, Vanessa Rubin, Sheila Jordan, Mulgrew Miller, Annie Ross and many others. She is a co-founder of the touring jazz ensemble Straight Ahead- the first all woman jazz ensemble signed to Atlantic Records. She is a member of the Detroit International Jazz Festival All-Star Ambassadors touring ensemble.

Widely recognized as a standard bearer of culture and artistic history, Hayden received a 2019 Art X Grant and a Creators of Culture Grant for original musical works. She was Artistic Director for a 2018 Knight Arts Foundation Grant encouraging young women in jazz. In 2016 Hayden was honored for her work as a performer and educator with the prestigious Kresge Artist Fellowship- a 1 year fellowship and grant award given an elite group of creative artists. She was the recipient of a 2016 Jazz Hero Award.- a national award given by the Jazz Journalists Association- recognizing people who have made a significant contribution through their artistry and community engagement.

As an arts advocate, Hayden has served as Grant Panelist for the Detroit Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, Art-Ops and the Highland Park Cultural Commission. She also serves as panelist or consultant for South Arts, Detroit Sound Conservancy, Charles Wright Museum of African American History, the Kresge Foundation, Jazz Education Network and Society of the Culturally Concerned.

A passionate advocate for youth music education, Hayden teaches for Michigan State Univ. Community Music School Detroit and is an educator in residence for the Detroit Jazz Festival. As well, she conducts the Next Gen Ensemble- a performing group of some of the areas best young musicians. Hayden holds faculty positions in the Jazz Studies Departments at University of Michigan and Oakland University. Hayden is the Bass instructor for the Geri Allen Jazz Camp, Newark, NJ. , and in 2021 will join the faculty at Centrum Jazz, Port Townsend, WA.

“It has been a privilege and a gift to learn and experience music in Detroit. The informal music education here is both thorough and rigorous and includes arranging, composing and production. The mentoring I received from the men and women in this music community was critical to my development as a creative artist. It instilled in me a sense of deep reverence and respect for music traditions, but also a fearlessness and openness about bringing those traditions forward in an original and authentic way. I express this creative openness through the projects and collaborations I engage in.”

Tradition always seems to be dying, or so say “the experts.” Scholars at academic conferences, diplomats at UNESCO, and government policy makers have belabored tradition’s downfall for decades as evidence of the necessity of intervention. Frequently, however, these interventions hide ulterior motives—for scholars, codifying traditions advance their careers; for diplomats, supporting the documentation of art bolsters tradition for consumption; for policy makers, selectively supporting certain practices over others serves nation-building strategies. These experts also tend to ignore the voices of practitioners themselves. Had these experts listened, they would have understood that tradition remains firmly tied to everyday life and even activism.

In this presentation, I examine how “tradition” lives a vibrant life in contemporary Vietnam and suggest that we retire the trite adage that tradition is dying. Tradition is tested, certainly, and frequently is reframed and revised; indeed, one genre of southern Vietnamese opera, cải lương, includes renovation (cải) in the genre name. Television shows, films, and popular music present many examples of how tradition does not simply inspire but is actively practiced and carried forward. In the television show Tài tử miệt vườn (Countryside Amateur), singers of southern Vietnamese traditional music from all walks of life receive praise from a panel of established singers and teach traditional music to viewers within a flashy gameshow format. In the film Song Lang (2018), director Leon Le tells a love story of two men in the 1980s and uses sounds of cải lương to give voice to LGBT voices on screen. In the music video for “BET ON ME” by the rapper Suboi, sounds of the đàn tranh zither mix with a Beyoncé-like delivery of lyrics to advocate for particular kinds of listening in an increasingly modernized Vietnam. All of these examples advance activism through tradition for forms of living to which we need to listen more closely.

Dr. Alexander M. Cannon is Lecturer in Music at the University of Birmingham (UK), where he teaches classes in ethnomusicology, critical musicology, and the traditional musics of Asia. He further serves as Co-editor of Ethnomusicology Forum, the journal of the British Forum for Ethnomusicology (BFE), and sits on the BFE Committee. He formerly served as Book Reviews Editor for the Yearbook of Traditional Music and as Secretary of the Board for the Society for Asian Music. An alumnus of the University of Michigan, he holds an MA and PhD in ethnomusicology from the School of Music, Theatre and Dance, where he wrote a dissertation on the southern Vietnamese traditional music genre đờn ca tài tử (music of talented amateurs). He recently completed a book manuscript titled “A Music Without a Name”: Creativity from Seed to Ruin in Southern Vietnam, and also has an article forthcoming in the journal Ethnomusicology. He has previously published in Ethnomusicology, Ethnomusicology Forum, Asian Music, and the Journal of Vietnamese Studies.

In March 2001, the University of Michigan Center for World Performance Studies celebrated its grand opening, inviting the community to participate in an evening of lectures, performances and food at the International Institute. This month, the Center begins the celebration of the 20th anniversary with a virtual panel discussion featuring three alumni of our graduate programs, who represent the diverse disciplinary fields, research interests and life work of our community. Each panelist will speak briefly about their current work, including fresh insights into the field of Performance Studies and ethnography, and then there will be a Q&A.

Mike Rahfaldt (PhD, Ethnomusicology ‘07) is the Executive Director of Children’s Radio Foundation, where he oversees the international operations from Cape Town, South Africa. Before joining the Children’s Radio Foundation in 2006, Michal taught media and anthropology at the University of Cape Town. As a journalist, he has contributed to Public Radio International, BBC World Service, NPR, and the New York Times.

Lani Teves (PhD, American Culture ‘12) is an Associate Professor in Women’s Studies at University of Hawaiʻi. She has written about Hawaiian hip-hop, film, and sexuality in the Pacific. She specializes in theorizing alternate forms of Kanaka Maoli gender performance and recognition politics. Her approach is informed by Indigenous feminist methodologies and ʻŌiwi epistemologies. Teves is the author of *Defiant Indigeneity: The Politics of Hawaiian Performance *(UNC Press 2018).

Masimba Hwati (MFA, Art, ‘19) is a multidisciplinary artist working in the intersections of sculpture video performance and sound. Hwati explores the transformation and evolution of knowledge systems that are indigenous to his own background whilst experimenting with the symbolism and perceptions attached to cultural objects, expressed as an art movement known as "The Energy of Objects". His work has been shown in Germany, France, Canada, London, the US, Australia, and Southern Africa. In 2015, he represented Zimbabwe at the 56th edition of the Venice Biennale in Italy.

In March 2001, the University of Michigan Center for World Performance Studies (CWPS) celebrated its grand opening, inviting the community to participate in an evening of lectures, performances and food at the International Institute. As part of the ongoing virtual celebration of this milestone, CWPS invites four esteemed U-M faculty members to reflect on the Center’s founding, its contributions to increasing the diversity of arts and research at University of Michigan, and to imagine the possibilities for the next twenty years.

Kwasi Ampene, Associate Professor in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies, is a scholar and practitioner of ethnomusicology. He specializes in the rich musical traditions of the Akan people of West Africa. His research interests include the performing arts as individually and collectively created and experienced, the performance of historical and social memory, politics, ideologies, values, and religious philosophy in Akan court music. Professor Ampene’s latest book, *Asante Court Music and Verbal Arts in Ghana: The Porcupine and the Gold Stool*, was published on June 30th, 2020 by Routledge. Dr. Ampene was Director of the Center for World Performance Studies from 2011-2016.

Lester Monts is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Music (ethnomusicology). From 1993 until 2014, he served as senior vice provost for academic affairs and senior counselor to the president for the arts, diversity, and undergraduate affairs. He is currently director of the Michigan Musical Heritage Project that seeks to capture on film the state’s folk, ethnic, and immigrant music traditions. Monts received a bachelor’s degree in music education from Arkansas Polytechnic College, a master’s degree in trumpet performance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and a doctorate in ethnomusicology from the University of Minnesota.

Mbala Nkanga is an Associate Professor of Theatre and head of the minor in Global Theatre & Ethnic Studies. A native of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, he taught directing, scenography and dramaturgical analysis at the Institut National des Arts in Kinshasa (DRC) beginning in 1979. He has directed plays in various professional companies there, such as Bernard Dadié’s Béatrice du Congo, Wole Soyinka’s A Dance of the Forests, and Réné Kalisky’s Aïda Vaincue. Dr. Nkanga received his PhD in Performance Studies from Northwestern University, and has led the Center for World Performance Studies graduate seminar since 1999.

Robin Wilson is an Associate Professor of Dance at the University of Michigan, on the faculty since 1995, and is best known as a founding member of New York’s Urban Bush Women. In 1995, she was awarded a New York Performance Award for the collective work of the Urban Bush Women from 1984-1994. Her studio teaching is informed by years of study in various mid-twentieth century modern dance and Afro-Caribbean folkloric dance techniques. She performed in New York for more than a decade with such choreographers as Dianne McIntyre, Kevin Wynn, and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar. Professor Wilson served on the Center for World Performance Studies faculty advisory committee for over a decade.

Going for Baroque (April 6, 2021 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/79953 79953-20517560@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, April 6, 2021 1:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

The pun is old and often used but it makes for a good title: “GOING FOR BAROQUE”. The great triumvirate of composers during this musical period all born in the year 1685, is Bach, Handel, and Scarlatti and we hear their music often. However, this time was particularly rich in composers.

Instructor Louis Nagel will spend some time looking at other giants of the Baroque as well as the works of these three titans. Such composers as Frescobaldi, Dowland, Couperin, and Telemann deserve attention as they wrote some remarkably beautiful and forward looking music. He plans to illustrate at the piano as well as show on line (or if we are back to real live performances by late spring, on a “boom box”) samples of these composers. They are worthy of our attention and in many cases wrote astonishingly beautiful music.

The study group will meet Tuesdays from April 6 through April 27. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

In this virtual series, Center for World Performance Studies invites performers and scholars from diverse disciplines to reflect on how performance is being used to respond to the political, social, health and environmental crises that we face at this moment. For this session, Dr. Ramón H. Rivera-Servera will discuss his recent research in Puerto Rico, including an innovative outreach initiative to assist Puerto Rican artists in the aftermath of hurricanes Maria and Irma. Participants can learn about this research ahead of the session by visiting the Mellon Foundation blog: https://mellon.org/shared-experiences-blog/after-storm/

Ramón H. Rivera-Servera is chair of the Department of Performance Studies and the Department of Theatre in the School of Communication at Northwestern University, and was recently appointed as the next dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on 20th and 21st Century performance in North America and the Caribbean with special emphasis on the ways categories of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality are negotiated across national borders through migratory circuits of circulation and exchange. His work documents a wide array of performance practices ranging from theatre and concert dance to social dance, popular music, fashion, and speech.

He is author of *Performing Queer Latinidad: Dance, Sexuality, Politics* (University of Michigan Press, 2012), a study of the role performance played in the development of Latina/o queer publics in the United States from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s.

He is currently completing a book manuscript, *Reggaetón’s Queer Turn: Sexuality, Abstraction, and Contemporary Art in the Circum-Caribbean*, which pursues feminist and queer uptakes of the popular music and dance cultures of reggaetón in circum-Caribbean contemporary art to theorize the role of black aesthetics in the sexual cultural politics of the Spanish speaking Caribbean and its diaspora. He is also conducting fieldwork and archival research towards two other projects: *Exhibiting Performance: Race, Museum Cultures, and the Live Event*, which looks at the ways race has been collected and exhibited in North America and the Caribbean since the mid-1990s and *Choreographing the Latina/o Post-Modern: Puerto Rican Moves in the New York Dance Avant-Garde*, a cultural history of Puerto Rican participation in the New York City experimental dance scene since the 1980s.

For two weeks every February, Trinity Laban’s usual creative atmosphere gets supercharged. There are no lectures, no classes, no assignments. That’s because it’s time for CoLab, their eccentric two‑week festival of creativity and innovation. For the 2021 CoLab, 10 SMTD students spent a week at Trinity Laban working alongside students to devise and perform interdisciplinary works through the city of London. Join SMTD faculty supervisor Jonathan Kuuskoski and a member of the Trinity Laban team to learn more about the CoLab experience, understand how SMTD students are selected for this opportunity, and share our hopes for what SMTD participation might look like in the February 2022.

Ken Fischer and Wynton Marsalis: Everybody In, Nobody Out (April 9, 2021 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83246 83246-21322431@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 9, 2021 8:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Exploring community connection through the performing arts, UMS President Emeritus Ken Fischer and jazz musician Wynton Marsalis come together in a conversation moderated by Lisa Richards Toney, president and CEO of the Association of Performing Arts Professionals.

Marsalis wrote the introduction to Fischer's book, Everybody in, Nobody Out (Michigan Publishing, 2020), which offers a reflection on the power of the performing arts to engage and enrich communities — not by handing down cultural enrichment from on high, but by meeting communities where they live and helping them preserve cultural heritage, incubate talent, and find ways to make community voices heard. In this talk, Fischer and Marsalis will also discuss the important relationship between presenter and artist in moving the artist's work forward.

Ken Fischer is President Emeritus of the University Musical Society (UMS) of the University of Michigan (U-M), a position he held from June 1, 1987 to June 30, 2017. UMS, an independent multidisciplinary performing arts presenter with a long and deep affiliation with U-M, is in the center of the Ann Arbor campus and offers 60-90 concerts each season, performed in up to nine University and community venues. On September 10, 2015, Fischer accepted the 2014 National Medal of Arts on behalf of UMS from President Obama at the White House. UMS is the first university presenter to receive the National Medal of Arts, which is the highest award given to artists and arts patrons by the United States government. Under Fischer’s leadership UMS greatly expanded and diversified its programming and its audiences; deepened its engagement with the University and southeast Michigan communities; created exemplary partnerships with leading corporations, arts organizations, educational institutions, and community organizations; and received significant endowment grants awarded by the leading foundations in the arts. In December 2019, Fischer received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan.

Wynton Marsalis is a world-renowned trumpeter, bandleader and composer, and a leading advocate of American culture. He presently serves as Managing and Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center and Director of Jazz Studies at The Juilliard School. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1961, Marsalis began his classical training on trumpet at age 12, entered The Juilliard School at age 17, and soon thereafter joined Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. He recorded more than 103 jazz and classical recordings, which have won nine GRAMMY® awards. In 1983, he became the first and only artist to win both classical and jazz GRAMMYs® in the same year, repeating the distinction the following year. Today, Wynton is the only artist ever to win Grammy Awards® in five consecutive years (1983-1987). In 1997, Wynton became the first jazz artist to be awarded the prestigious Pulitzer in Music for his oratorio Blood on the Fields. Marsalis has received honorary doctorates from over 25 of America’s top academic institutions including Columbia, Harvard, Howard, Princeton and Yale. In 2001, he was appointed Messenger of Peace by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan. In 2005 Wynton received The National Medal of Arts, the highest award given to artists by the United States government.

Lisa Richards Toney is the President & CEO of the Association of Performing Arts Professionals. Richards Toney brings more than 20 years of experience leading a range of small and large arts and humanities organizations, managing change and building stability. Most recently she served as the Executive Director of the Abramson Scholarship Foundation, and prior to that, as the Interim Executive Director and Deputy Director of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. She was also the first Executive Director of the Debbie Allen Dance Academy and Director of Literature to Life for The American Place Theatre. She currently serves on the boards of Performing Arts Alliance and Mosaic Theatre Company of DC, co-chair of the Jack and Jill DC Chapter Jumoke Black History Festival, and on the Advisory Board of the American University Graduate Program in Arts Administration. She holds an M.A. in educational theater from NYU with coursework in arts administration and a B.A. as a presidential scholar from Spelman College.

This event is co-presented by PBS Books and Detroit Public Television, with support from UMS and the Association of Performing Arts Professionals.

One of the three most popular Italian comic operas, DON PASQUALE tells the tale of an old, wealthy bachelor, his nephew, a fake wife, and the scheme to get him to support his nephew’s marriage to young widow Norina. Stage director Abbigail Cote and music director Kirk Severtson have set their production in the 1940s and filmed it live in the Power Center over two successive nights. In grand opera tradition, each performance features a different cast, and both casts’ performances will be available to view simultaneously.

The Little Bands Music School is an innovative music program in which students learn music from a constructivist perspective. The program serves all ages including children as young as four and adults.

The foundation of the program is the multi-instrumental band program. Students join a 5-piece band. The instrumentation of the band is piano, guitar, bass, drums and voice. Students follow a detailed curriculum of songs and compose their own songs. Every student learns every song on every instrument. This method is designed to facilitate an environment in which students understand music from different perspectives, learn to collaborate, and experience what goes into a piece of music and how to compose their own music.

Teachers in Little Bands School work with private students and students in public and private schools in Southeast Michigan. We particularly love helping people who have always wanted to play an instrument and never had the chance.

Presenter Joshua Grekin is a musician and educator with experience teaching all ages and genres. Trained as a jazz trumpet player, he is also proficient on piano, guitar, bass, drums, and other orchestral instruments. Joshua has a BA in music from the Berklee College of Music, a Masters from the Manhattan School of Music and is currently finishing his PhD at Oakland University.

He is the creator and director of the Little Bands School, a tech-enabled music education program which offers a unique and innovative K-12 instrumental curriculum. A songwriter as well, Joshua writes music for musicals, film, commercials, bands, and the Little Bands School curriculum.

Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the presentation will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the event.

*I am America too.* With these powerful words, Afro-American poet Langston Hughes expressed the right of coloured people to be an equal part of American culture and society. As a member of the »Harlem Renaissance«, a dynamic movement initiated by Afro-American artists in the 1920s, Hughes became a true classic. With his deeply humanistic attitude, his intellect, sense of humour and incorruptible integrity, he produced works that remain timeless and touching to this day. The concert programme *Langston Hughes: Singing Harlem in Europe* features musical settings of his texts by composers like Wilhelm Grosz, Florence Price and Leonard Bernstein, showing that humanity and truthfulness know no bounds – neither then, nor now.

»I know why the caged bird sings« – it sings of freedom in order not to lose hope. It sings in order to feel the life beyond the bars of its cage. To encourage itself and others. And this is how American composers and authors with African roots sing and write to this day: their subject matter is discrimination and injustice, pride and dignity – but love and separation as well, mourning and joy, belief and hope.

In the second part of the Celebration of Black Music, several generations of these artists have their say: from Florence Price and William Grant Still to Tyshawn Sorey and B. E. Boykin. The concert presents a many-voiced panorama of black music in its countless and fascinating facets.

This is a milestone in a journey that brings together music and neurobiology. Through a collaboration among musicians, neurobiologists, sound engineers, composers, scientists, humans, and nematodes, we explore questions inspired by neurobiology experiments with the invertebrate model organism Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). How does memory sound? What constitutes the musical background of a memory? How is a maze represented musically? What is the relationship between stochasticity in spatial navigation and improvisation in musical navigation? How can a human performer converse with a tiny invertebrate animal lost in space? How can we learn to create music guided by an experimental animal? How can an invertebrate creature learn to navigate guided by music? And, ultimately, how do the founding definitions of our certainties shape up when we shift our frame of thought into a new paradigm?

Directed by MiMi Scardulla
Music Direction by Jason DeBord

The setting is the roaring 1920s. Lovers Queenie and Burrs decide to throw the party-to-end-all-parties in their Manhattan apartment. After the arrival of a slew of colorful guests living life on the edge, Queenie's wandering eye lands on a striking man named Mr. Black. As the decadence is reaching a climax, so is Burrs' jealousy, which erupts and sends him into a violent rage. Gun in hand and inhibitions abandoned, Burrs turns on Queenie and Black. The gun gets fired, but who's been shot?

A steamy prohibition tale, steamrolling and roaring its way across the stage, The Wild Party was an Off-Broadway gem that garnered an array of industry accolades, including Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Obie awards. Based on Joseph Moncure March's 1928 narrative poem of the same name, this darkly brilliant show features one of the most exciting, pulse-racing scores ever written, courtesy of SMTD alumnus Andrew Lippa (The Addams Family, Big Fish).

The University of Michigan Carillons (October 20, 2021 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/85031 85031-21625473@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 20, 2021 3:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

We all are transfixed whenever we hear beautiful music emanating from either of the University’s two carillons on campus. And the simple sight of the towers housing the Baird and Lurie Carillons leave us awestruck. Have you ever wondered how our University was fortunate enough to acquire two carillons? Have you wondered how they were played? How were the bells made? Or who was the person (carillonneur) creating the music, and how do they make the huge bells ring out? How and when were the Baird and Lurie Carillons built on the UofM campus, and who were some of their notable carillonneurs? How do you play a carillon? I’ll bet you can’t guess!
We’ll learn about the origins of carillons in the 16th century to the future of carillon composing and performance in modern times.

Eva Albalghiti is a carillonneur at the University of Michigan. Eva began playing the carillon at Yale University, and was a member of the Yale Guild of Carillonneurs. She was also recognized for her talent through membership in the Guild of Carillonneurs of North America. After pursuing a two-year research opportunity in Beijing, China, she began her PhD in Environmental Engineering at the U of M. Eva plays a weekly carillon recital at Lurie Tower on UM’s North Campus. I’ll bet the view from the top is spectacular!

Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed prior to the event.

Musicology Lecture: “Naming and Counting Whiteness:   Fred Astaire, Stephen Sondheim, and Race in the American Musical” - Dr. Todd Decker (October 22, 2021 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/87752 87752-21645625@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 22, 2021 5:00pm

Todd Decker (Ph.D., University of Michigan, 2007) is the Paul Tietjens Professor of Music, American Culture Studies, and Film and Media Studies at Washington University in St. Louis.

Racial segregation pervades the American stage and screen musical from its origins to the present. And while the black-cast musical is usually named as such, the necessary complement on the other side of the color line—the white-cast musical—is typically granted the unmodified moniker “the musical.” (Eliding race in this way is, of course, a classic expression of whiteness.) This talk names the white-cast musical as such by identifying aesthetic, structural, and industrial forms of whiteness in the output of two major figures: Fred Astaire and Stephen Sondheim. Drawing on forthcoming work on both men, I use a variety of methods to identify and describe Astaire’s and Sondheim’s distinct and particular types of whiteness. Adding precision to this inquiry, I draw on digital humanities methods that quantify the extent to which whiteness dominates the history of the American musical.

Organized By: Center for World Performance Studies

Center for World Performance Studies presents the first in a series of virtual roundtable discussion curated by Scholar-in-Residency Ajay Heble, exploring the theme of Improvisation & Encounter. Drawing its inspiration in part from The Fierce Urgency of Now: Improvisation, Rights, and the Ethics of Cocreation, a collaboratively-authored book by Daniel Fischlin, George Lipsitz, and Ajay Heble, this series of online roundtable conversations will explore Improvisation in the arts as a scene of encounter. What happens when artists come together to improvise, and what might this scene of encounter tell us about the staging and negotiation of difference: between artists, between artists and audiences, between the present moment and the varied histories and contexts that gave rise to it?

Moderated by Ajay Heble, and presented in association with Edgefest, the focus of the first panel is FESTIVALS, and brings together three leaders in the curatorial field. Vocalist Deanna Relyea was the founder of Kerrytown Concert House and is the current Artistic Director of Edgefest, Michigan’s long running avant-jazz festival. Dancer, poet and organizer of movement, music and causes Patricia Nicholson Parker has developed her work within the aesthetic of free jazz. Nicholson founded Arts For Art and the Vision Festival to promote and advocate for free jazz. Rainbow Robert is a relentless proponent of strange, beautiful, heavy music. She has been deeply involved with the jazz community in Canada for the past two decades through her work with Coastal Jazz, and as producer of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, where she currently serves in the role of Managing Artistic Director.

Scholar-in-Residence Ajay Heble is Director of the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation and Professor of English in the School of English and Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph. He is the author or editor of several books, and a founding co-editor of the journal Critical Studies in Improvisation/Études critiques en improvisation (www.criticalimprov.com ). He was the Project Director for Improvisation, Community, and Social Practice, a large-scale Major Collaborative Research Initiative, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. As the Founder and Artistic Director of the Guelph Jazz Festival, Heble has jolted the citizens of Guelph into an appreciation of improvised and avant-garde music and delighted aficionados from around the world with his innovative and daring programming.

Steve Swell is one of the finest composers/improvisers on the New York downtown scene and is internationally acclaimed for his trombone playing. He has performed regularly in Europe, often in Poland, where he has established important connections with local musicians. On one of his many trips to Kraków he decided to visit Auschwitz, and wrote, “The first time I tried to visit Auschwitz in 2007, there was no train. They had changed the track of the train that regularly departed for there. They announced the track change in Polish but not in English. There were about two very angry people yelling and screaming at the ticket sellers and railroad staff as to this oversight. Can you imagine, people yelling that they missed the train to Auschwitz and that it had ruined their day?”

Later he wrote, "*If Trains Could Speak* is inspired by that ninety-minute train ride from Kraków to Auschwitz concentration camp. The ride itself is through some very beautiful, peaceful countryside and farmland in southeast Poland. The incongruity of my ride and the ride of those whose trip seventy years before was one of uncertainty and hopelessness prompted a multitude of thoughts and feelings as the train progressed to its destination. The journey and visit to the camp itself sparked a deeper understanding of the horrors that humans are capable of and its juxtaposition to our ability to be brilliant, creative, and tolerant. Delving into the choice we have in either surrendering to our baser instincts or transcending them, feeds my own lifelong curiosity of what it means to be alive, and to know that life is fragile, dangerous, and magnificent all at the same time."

In addition to the composer on trombone, the performance will feature Deanna Relyea, mezzo-soprano; Jason Kao Hwang, violin and viola; Piotr Michalowski, bass clarinet and soprano saxophone; Steve Rush, piano; Ken Filiano, bass; and Michael TA Thompson, percussion.

All attendees must be fully vaccinated and wear a mask.

Edgefest: Steve Swell’s If Trains Could Speak (October 30, 2021 7:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/88741 88741-21657249@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, October 30, 2021 7:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Judaic Studies

This is currently scheduled as the final set of the Grand Finale Evening of Edgefest at the Bethlehem United Church of Christ on 4th Ave. on Saturday evening (Oct. 30). The full program begins at 7 pm. All attendees must be fully vaccinated and wear a mask. Steve Swell is one of the finest composers/improvisers on the New York downtown scene and is internationally acclaimed for his trombone playing. He has performed regularly in Europe, often in Poland, where he has established important connections with local musicians. On one of his many trips to Kraków he decided to visit Auschwitz:

“The first time I tried to visit Auschwitz in 2007, there was no train.

Later he wrote: If “Trains Could Speak” is inspired by that ninety-minute train ride from Krakow to Auschwitz concentration camp. The ride itself is through some very beautiful, peaceful countryside and farmland in southeast Poland. The incongruity of my ride and the ride of those whose trip seventy years before was one of uncertainty and hopelessness prompted a multitude of thoughts and feelings as the train progressed to its destination. The journey and visit to the camp itself sparked a deeper understanding of the horrors that humans are capable of and
its juxtaposition to our ability to be brilliant, creative, and tolerant. Delving into the choice we have in either surrendering to our baser instincts or to transcend them, feeds my own lifelong curiosity of what it means to be alive, and to know that life is fragile, dangerous, and magnificent all at the same time.

In addition to the composer on trombone, the performance will feature Deanna Relyea, mezzo soprano, Jason Kao Hwang, violin, viola, Piotr Michalowski, bass clarinet, soprano saxophone, Steve Rush, piano, Ken Filiano, bass, and Michael TA Thompson, percussion.

All attendees must be fully vaccinated and wear a mask.

This historical moment presents us with the urgent challenge to reflect on who we are, how we got to where we are, and what we can do to create collaborative solutions to move onwards in a restorative way. Indigenous Peoples have for millennia developed a sense of awareness of the keen consciousness of the Earth to enhance embodied knowledge and a relational capacity that reverences life based on collaboration and compassion. The cosmologies that come from such insight incite acknowledgment and gratitude to all our relations. Interdependence does not stay as a mere ideal, it manifests as a perceived, shared truth engaged in action. Come together to explore our exceptional capacity of reconnection to the nourishing, relationship, empowering and transformative force of the Earth.

Yuria Celidwin Bio
I am of Indigenous Nahua and Maya descent from the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico. My interests are the interdisciplinary approaches to the experience of self-transcendence, its embodiment in contemplative practice, and how it enhances prosocial behavior (ethics, compassion, kindness, reverence, and a sense of awe and sacredness) across Indigenous contemplative traditions. As a scholar, I work on the intersection of Indigenous studies, cultural psychology, and contemplative studies. My thesis on the “Ethics of Belonging” is an earth-based ecological relational experience that engenders an ethos of conscious social responsibility for self, community, and environment. Within this work, I examine how self-identity relates to cultural narratives and how reconstructing them can transform our times’ social and racial injustices. I teach Indigenous epistemologies, spirituality and pioneered the Indigenous contemplative experience within contemplative studies. As an activist, I strive for Indigenous representation and the revitalization of Indigenous wisdom as sophisticated systems of contemplative insight. I emphasize the reclamation, regeneration, and transmission of Indigenous ways of knowing and the advancement of Indigenous rights and the rights of the Earth for social and environmental justice.

Presented by the University of Michigan Program in Creativity and Consciousness Studies in collaboration with the Center for Creative Studies (Detroit)

Music by Jules Massenet

After the fairy tale by Charles Perrault
Stage Direction by Abbigail Coté
Music Direction by Kirk Severtson

The King is throwing a ball in Prince Charming’s honor, and all will be in attendance—except for Lucette, known as “Cinderella” to her stepmother & stepsisters—until Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother steps in. The fairy’s spell lasts only until midnight. That’s long enough for Cinderella and Prince Charming to meet and fall in love.

This witty French opera premiered in Paris at the Opéra-Comique on May 24, 1899. It is based on the classic fairy tale as told by Charles Perrault. This operatic version is closer to Perrault’s story than the version used in Rossini’s La Cenerentola. Its music is full of melodic charm with recognizable arias.

This production will be sung in French with projected English translations.

VENUE CORRECTION - This masterclass will be in the Earl V. Moore Hankinson Rehearsal Hall (2005 Baits Drive)

Praised by the Philadelphia Inquirer as having “a sound as clear and sure as it [is] luxurious,” Carol Jantsch has been principal tuba of The Philadelphia Orchestra since 2006. She won the position during her senior year at the University of Michigan, becoming the first female tuba player in a major symphony orchestra.

In addition to her duties in the Philadelphia Orchestra, Ms. Jantsch is a renowned tuba soloist. She gives solo recitals regularly, and has appeared as a concerto soloist with various ensembles, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Columbus Symphony, the St. Petersburg Symphony in Russia, the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra, and the United States Marine Band. She has performed in Carnegie’s Zankel Hall with the Musical Olympus Festival, and has appeared on the radio on NPR’s series From the Top and Interlochen Public Radio’s Live From Studio A. In 2009 she was honored with a “Best of Philly” award from Philadelphia magazine. She has also won prizes in several international solo tuba competitions, and alumni awards from both Interlochen Arts Academy and the University of Michigan.

Ms. Jantsch is in increasing demand as a teacher worldwide, having given master classes in Europe, Asia, and North America. She enjoys working with young musicians, and has been a featured artist at various brass festivals in Finland, Germany, Canada, and the United States. She is on the faculty at the Yale University School of Music and Temple University’s Boyer College of Music.

Ms. Jantsch is an advocate for music education in her community. In 2018, she founded Tubas For Good, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that provides instruments for students in the Philadelphia School District. Ms. Jantsch coaches music students from the district both through Tubas For Good and through the Philadelphia Orchestra’s All-City program. Since 2017, she has hosted an annual Tuba/Euphonium PlayIN, a free community event where players of all ages and skill levels are invited to perform as a mass tuba ensemble on the Verizon Hall stage.

Ms. Jantsch enjoys interacting with audiences in a very different way than her orchestra role as a member of Tubular, a tuba cover band that performs at bars and events. Comprised of tubas, euphoniums, drums, and vocals, Tubular is committed to presenting pop and rock music in a fun and engaging way, while guilefully stretching people’s notions of the capabilities of low brass instruments. As the chief arranger of Tubular, Ms. Jantsch revels in the challenge of adapting music from ABBA to Zeppelin for this unique setting.

Raised in a musical family, Ms. Jantsch began piano lessons at age six and began studying euphonium at Interlochen Arts Camp at age nine. After switching to tuba, she attended the prestigious arts boarding high school Interlochen Arts Academy, graduating as salutatorian of her class. She continued her studies at the University of Michigan under the tutelage of Fritz Kaenzig. After winning her position with The Philadelphia Orchestra in February of 2006, she returned to Michigan to complete her Bachelor of Music degree, graduating with highest honors.

Ms. Jantsch can be heard on numerous Philadelphia Orchestra recordings, including the 2010 release of Ewald Quintets no. 1 and 3 with fellow Philadelphia Orchestra principal brass. She released her first solo recording, Cascades, in 2009. In 2013 she premiered Reflections on the Mississippi, a tuba concerto written for her and the Temple University Symphony Orchestra by Grammy Award-winning composer Michael Daugherty. She performed the concerto with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2015, and recorded it with the Albany Symphony Orchestra and the University of Michigan Symphony Band.

Ms. Jantsch is a Yamaha Performing Artist. She plays a Yamaha YFB-822 F tuba, a YFB-826 “Yamayork” CC tuba, and a PT-6 CC tuba.
