John Megahan is the senior scientific illustrator at the Museum of Zoology at the University of Michigan since 1996. He holds a Master in Biology and eventually discovered the profession of biological illustration. He committed to freelance biological illustration for several years before joining the Museum of Zoology. While John enjoys the challenge of doing illustrations for others, he finds that as he matures, expressing his own artistic vision is becoming important to him. He is now looking forward to creating art that reflects his own interpretations of nature, life and the environment.

This exhibit gives a peek at the kinds of topics he hopes to pursue. He painted species that are threatened, endangered or have disappeared from Michigan and also of the flying squirrel, species that is being carefully watched by biologists as its distribution is changing and they are not sure why. He invites the viewer to see the show and find out about some interesting theories.

Going, Going, Gone runs from November through January.

“If you think our country is on the wrong course environmentally, then this talk and book are for you.”

Our society should be able to rally to face urgent challenges like global warming, but we are not. In his new book Sustainable Nation: Urban Design Patterns for the Future (Wiley 2018) Doug Farr argues persuasively that we have been going about it all wrong, proposes a reset, and a clear path forward. This inspirational and sobering talk will forever change your understanding of the challenges we face, the urgency with which we need to face them, and your leading role in our generation’s call to act.

Art museums generally give primacy to the sense of sight. Religious and ritual objects, on the other hand, stimulate an array of multisensory experiences. Focusing on works from UMMA’s collection associated with different types of Japanese Buddhism, we engage all of the six senses in this exhibition. These six are integral to Buddhist devotion: sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste, and mind (or the activity of thinking, including what is perceived via the other senses). The “Six Senses” gallery experience extends beyond vision to include: the sound of chanting and ritual implements; the fragrance of incense; the feel of bronze, ceramic, and silk; and the creation of mental images. Gain a deeper understanding of the nature and histories of objects used in Buddhist practice with a docent tour of this fascinating exhibition.

Lead support for The Six Senses of Buddhism is provided by the Japan Business Society of Detroit Foundation and the University of Michigan Center for Japanese Studies.

Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Art museums generally give primacy to the sense of sight. Religious and ritual objects, on the other hand, stimulate an array of multi-sensory experiences. Focusing on works from UMMA’s collection associated with different types of Japanese Buddhism, we engage all of the six senses in this exhibition.

Six senses are integral to Buddhist devotion: sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste, and mind (or the activity of thinking, including what is perceived via the other senses). The “Six Senses” gallery experience extends beyond vision to include: the sound of chanting and ritual implements; the fragrance of incense; the feel of bronze, ceramic, and silk; and the creation of mental images. Our goal for visitors is to gain a deeper understanding of the nature and histories of objects used in Buddhist practice.

Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

The Ann Arbor Guitar Trio was founded on the idea that more guitar is better. Alex Anest formed the group with Evan Veasey and Adam Kahana in April 2016. All three musicians are talented, creative players who have been performing and recording in the Ann Arbor area for years. With three guitars there are endless possibilities and the A2G3 looks to explore as many of them as they can. For their performance at the UMMA, the group has chosen compositions by Abby Clemens, Alex Anest, Janelle Reichman, The Beach Boys, and JS Bach. The repertoire was specifically selected to work with the reverberant nature of the museum's space. For more information and recent recordings, visit https://annarborguitartrio.com/

Lead support for The Six Senses of Buddhism is provided by the Japan Business Society of Detroit Foundation and the University of Michigan Center for Japanese Studies.

It’s Labor Day, which means Tubing @ 2 (ON 9/2!) + Pizza 🍕 Float! Looks like it’ll be 80 and sunny 😎. We provide the pizza floats; meet us there at Argo Park or we can give you a ride. Bring a friend and dress to swim, as we’ll take the floats down the cascades!

What’s a pizza float you ask? It’s a float in the shape of a pizza slice ... connected together to form a pizza pie ... topped off with a tub of ice cream 🍦 in the middle and your choice of soda 🥤 to make your own ice cream float ... all while floating in the river!

UMMA Pop Up: The Ann Arbor Guitar Trio (September 14, 2019 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/65025 65025-16503316@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, September 14, 2019 1:00pm
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

The Ann Arbor Guitar Trio was founded on the idea that more guitar is better. Alex Anest formed the group with Evan Veasey and Adam Kahana in April 2016. All three musicians are talented, creative players who have been performing and recording in the Ann Arbor area for years. With three guitars there are endless possibilities and the A2G3 looks to explore as many of them as they can. For their performance at UMMA, the group has chosen compositions by Abby Clemens, Alex Anest, Janelle Reichman, The Beach Boys, and JS Bach. The repertoire was specifically selected to work with the reverberant nature of the museum's space. For more information and recent recordings, visit https://annarborguitartrio.com/

The goal is to make it out with at least one life flag and be a “survivor.” Survivors are rewarded by being entered into raffles to win gift cards and items from local sponsors. Runners 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent or designated guardian 18 and over. All runners 17 and under must have a parent or guardian sign the waiver. Visit mbgna.umich.edu/event/zombie-run-run-for-the-arb-run-for-your-life/ for more information and to register.
