Organized By: Electrical and Computer Engineering

As a new Michigan engineer you have several areas to choose from and sometimes, those options can be confusing and overwhelming. ECE is hosting an open house to share more about electrical and computer engineering and what opportunities are available to our students.

So what exactly do electrical and computer engineers do? We do everything! We are there in all electronic devices (cell phones, computers, cars, appliances, etc). We are in electronic communication, networking, power, energy, sensors, and much more. We make things smart - we make them move. We send and decode information - we connect people and things. And we light up the world - efficiently of course!

Attendees will hear remarks from EECS Prof. Pei-Cheng Ku and a few current students, and see some virtual lab tours and learn more about the incredible research happening in our building.

RSVP on the ECE website to receive Zoom event information. Questions can be directed to Ann Stals (amriggs). We hope to see you there!

Raoul Wallenberg Lecture: Michael Kimmelman, The New York Times (November 16, 2020 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/78968 78968-20162602@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, November 16, 2020 6:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning

Save the date for the Fall 2020 Raoul Wallenberg Lecture featuring Michael Kimmelman of the New York Times. Kimmelman's remarks, in conversation with Dean Jonathan Massey, will be followed by a public interview with Taubman College's Agora and Dimensions publications, exploring the role of journalists in issues of racial justice, social equity, health, and climate change in the context of the built environment.

Since he returned to New York from Europe in the fall of 2011, Michael Kimmelman has been the architecture critic of The New York Times. He has reported from more than 40 countries and twice been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. His work focuses on urban affairs, public space, housing for the poor, infrastructure, social equality and the environment, as well as on design. A best-selling author, he has won numerous awards over the years. The magazine New York titled an article about him “The People’s Critic.” In March 2014, Mr. Kimmelman was given the Brendan Gill Prize for “insightful candor and continuous scrutiny of New York’s architectural environment,” “that is journalism at its finest."

From 2007 to 2011, Mr. Kimmelman was based in Berlin, covering Europe and the Middle East, having devised the “Abroad” column. While there, he reported on life under Hamas in Gaza, the crackdown on culture in Putin’s Russia, negritude in France and bullfighting in Spain, among other subjects. He was previously The Times’s longtime chief art critic — “the most acute American art critic of his generation,” according to the late Australian writer Robert Hughes.

A graduate of Yale and Harvard, adjunct professor at Columbia University and former Franke fellow at the Whitney Center for the Humanities at Yale, he has contributed regularly to The New York Review of Books.

The Raoul Wallenberg Lecture was initiated in 1971 by Sol King, a former classmate of Wallenberg's. An endowment was established in 1976 for an annual lecture to be offered in Raoul's honor on the theme of architecture as a humane social art.

Control Allocation of Flexible Aircraft for Load Alleviation (December 8, 2020 2:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/79628 79628-20486026@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, December 8, 2020 2:30pm
Location:
Organized By: Aerospace Engineering

As wing designs aim for higher aerodynamic efficiency, the underlying aircraft structure becomes more flexible, requiring additional features to alleviate the loads encountered from gusts and maneuvers. While alleviating loads, it is desirable to minimize the deviations from the original flight trajectory.

In this work, a dynamic control allocation method which exploits redundant control effectors for maneuver and gust load alleviation is proposed for flexible aircraft. The control architecture decouples the two objectives of load alleviation and rigid body trajectory tracking by exploiting the null space between the input and the rigid body output. A reduced-dimensional null space input is established, which affects the flexible output (but not the rigid body output) when passed through a null space filter to generate incremental control signals. This null space input is determined to maintain the flexible output of the aircraft within specified values, thereby achieving load alleviation.

A receding horizon approach to generate the trajectory of the null space input is developed based on linear aircraft models. This receding horizon approach then informs a model predictive control-based control allocator function which can be used as an add-on scheme to a nominal controller. Numerical simulations are used to show that the proposed load alleviation system can successfully avoid the violation of load bounds in the presence of both gust disturbances and maneuvers and with minimal effect on the trajectory tracking performance.

Multidisciplinary Study of Soft Shape Morphing Systems (December 18, 2020 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/80090 80090-20556868@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, December 18, 2020 10:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Aerospace Engineering

Nature abounds with examples of shape morphing systems where an entity either gradually grows into a complex 3-D shape pattern or rapidly morphs into a new configuration. Inspired by the shape shifting capabilities of biological systems, we study the response of natural and synthetic morphing systems through a few examples. These include the in vitro adaptive contraction of a cardiac muscle cell inside a constraining hydrogel, inflation of architectured rubber membranes, and a shape morphing soft robot.

Cardiac muscle cells (cardiomyocytes) have an intrinsic mechano-chemo-transduction (MCT) mechanism that enable them to automatically convert mechanical loads into biochemical signals to actively regulate their amplitude and speed of contraction. At the molecular level, this is attributed to the morphing of regulatory and motor proteins (actin and myosin filaments) to facilitate muscle contraction. The underlying MCT mechanisms, however, are unclear and currently under investigation. To help decipher these mechanisms, we develop a mathematical model, as a companion tool for the experimental in vitro Cell-in-Gel system of our collaborators, to analyze the time-dependent, 3-D strains and stresses within a cardiomyocyte contracting in a viscoelastic medium. The model utilizes the exact analytical solution of the viscoelastic Eshelby inclusion boundary value problem as an efficient computational tool to simulate the mechanical fields inside and outside the cardiomyocyte.

In a second study, we investigate the inflation of shape morphing synthetic soft composites with architectured geometry and material properties. Such shape morphing systems could have desirable applications in space deployable systems where there is a growing demand for energy-efficient lightweight and low-cost structures. These structures possess an exceptionally high mechanical packaging efficiency and very small stowage volume, which makes them attractive candidates for space applications including antenna reflectors, solar arrays, inflatable rovers, re-entry equipment, and human habitats. In particular, we explore several feasible 3-D shapes that can be achieved through the inflation of an initially flat rubber membrane with nonuniform geometrical and material properties. Our rubber-based prototypes provide a convenient basis for conceptual scientific and design explorations in shape morphing inflatable structures.

In a third study, we explore the idea of shape shifting in the design and fabrication of synthetic soft robots with active components. Motivated by the swimming mechanisms of jellyfish, we develop a novel concept for a soft biomimetic underwater robot that imitates the shape and kinematics of the typical animal. The robot swims by harnessing the buckling instability of its soft body to quickly morph from an initially flat into a deformed dome-shaped configuration, which generates the required thrust for underwater locomotion. Joule heating of an embedded pre-stretched shape memory alloy spring serves as an artificial muscle for the robot to make this shape morphing possible. The proposed synthetic shape morphing system introduces a new idea in design of simple, compact, and biomimetic robots with smart artificial muscles.

Black History Month's Closing Speaker - JANAYA KHAN (March 1, 2021 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/82365 82365-21070618@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 1, 2021 6:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Multi Ethnic Student Affairs - MESA

MESA is proud to present Black History Month's Closing Speaker - JANAYA KHAN. Join us for a thrilling event where Janaya Khan will discuss “The Future within the Black Lives Matter Movement and The Intersections of being a Black, Queer, and Gender-Nonconforming Activist" This event is sponsored by The Spectrum Center and Central Student Government, and will be co-moderated by students Adrian King (they/them), PhD candidate in American Culture, and Jolyna Chiangong, who will be joined by Vice President Of Student Life Dr. Martino Harmon.

With a timely message about the transformational power of protest, Janaya Khan is a leading activist who engages their community in a profound discussion about social justice and equality. Known as ‘Future’ within the Black Lives Matter movement, Janaya is a black, queer, gender-nonconforming activist (pronouns: they, them, theirs), staunch Afrofuturist and social-justice educator who presents an enlightening point of view on police brutality and systemic racism.

“Throughout the political tumult of 2020, one of the most prominent voices to become a source of healing and hope was Janaya Future Khan, whose rapidly-growing audience across social media now numbers in the hundreds of thousands. But while the activist’s weekly Sunday Sermons on Instagram provided a necessary forum for those looking to reflect and regroup during the pandemic and the instances of police brutality that sparked a renewal of energy behind the Black Lives Matter movement, Khan’s activism extends much further back—all the way to their childhood, spent between Toronto and Florida, and their subsequent years as a competitive boxer.

Galvanized by the 2014 killings of Michael Brown in Ferguson and Jermaine Carby in Toronto at the hands of police officers, Khan has had a longstanding involvement in Black Lives Matter—even launching its first international chapter in Canada—and became a necessary and informed voice for those seeking direction last summer. And like many around the world, Khan found themselves dismayed and angered by the scenes that unfolded on Wednesday at the U.S. Capitol building, where riots led by Trump supporters sieged the building to disrupt the final counting of the Electoral College ballots in favor of Joe Biden’s Presidential win, resulting in five deaths.” BY LIAM HESS January 10, 2021

MESA and the Spectrum Center is dedicated to working towards offering equitable access to all of the events we organize. If you have an accessibility need you feel may not be automatically met at this event, fill out our Event Accessibility Form, found at http://bit.ly/SCaccess. You do not need to have a registered disability with the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) or identify as disabled to submit. Advance notice is necessary for some accommodations to be fully implemented, and we will always attempt to dismantle barriers as they are brought up to us. The recipient of the Experiments in Translation Grant, “Microbial Masterpieces” is a continuously evolving project aiming to communicate the importance of microorganisms to humanity and the planet. Our featured attraction is a giant Winogradsky Panel in the Duderstadt Center Gallery, which houses a brightly colored, continuously changing biofilm. In this presentation, we will share beautiful images and time lapses of the Winogradsky Panel; discuss the science underlying the Panel; and reflect on the importance of art in science communication. Additionally, we will share our progress in trying to make our project accessible to the blind and visually-impaired community through tactile and audio experiences.

The MM team includes: Erica Gardner (School for Environment and Sustainability; College of Engineering); Anna Urso (School for Environment and Sustainability); Bruna lunes Sanches (Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning)

Under the open sky, four performers will enter a space of intimacy - where the desire to be close to one another after a year of distance propels their bodies into wild action and joyous abandon. Created against the backdrop of nature, audiences will experience a 25-minute immersive, outdoor performance with
four dancers and an original symphonic score by Scott Li, that catapults gorgeous melodic lines of longing into the intimacy of your earbuds. Linking topography, human form in movement, and the audience’s individual perspectives, TOGETHER IS CLOSE ENOUGH will lead each participant to a cathartic experience of closeness within our pandemic-induced seclusion. With daredevil physicality, VIM VIGOR communicates the complexity of human relationships through their signature dance-theater aesthetic, bodies will flare, emotions will flood, and the sharp urgency of our deepest feelings will rocket through space.

The Tabletop Gaming Club provides a network for people interested in tabletop gaming. We tend to focus on TTRPGs like D&D, Pathfinder, etc., but we also play board games. We are open to players of all experience levels and strive to create a welcoming environment in which everyone can play games, learn new systems, meet friends - and most importantly, have fun!

Our mass meetings will give new players a chance to learn how the club is organized, try a tabletop game, and talk to club members and officers.

In the meantime, feel free to join our Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/MTabletopGaming/) or our Discord server (https://discord.gg/Kyu3Q8U) to connect with other members! You can also email tabletopofficers@umich.edu or DM anyone from the "Club Officers" Discord tab if you have questions.

This is a milestone in a journey that brings together music and neurobiology. Through a collaboration among musicians, neurobiologists, sound engineers, composers, scientists, humans, and nematodes, we explore questions inspired by neurobiology experiments with the invertebrate model organism Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). How does memory sound? What constitutes the musical background of a memory? How is a maze represented musically? What is the relationship between stochasticity in spatial navigation and improvisation in musical navigation? How can a human performer converse with a tiny invertebrate animal lost in space? How can we learn to create music guided by an experimental animal? How can an invertebrate creature learn to navigate guided by music? And, ultimately, how do the founding definitions of our certainties shape up when we shift our frame of thought into a new paradigm?

Sunday, September 26 | 2-3pm & 3-4pm (each show is a 30-minute installation followed by a 30-minute performance)
Admission is free but RSVP is required at https://forms.gle/AXorZMAZartHizHF8
