A goal of the course is to practice "close looking," in order to understand the multiples meanings of the art. “Flourish” by Martin E.P. Seligman - A must read for those wanting to understand how we thrive.

"The book is full of nuggets about why positive approaches work."
"An interesting and hope-inducing read with real-world application."

Seligman's approach is to take psychology from its traditional role in alleviating misery and broaden it into a solid research-based guidebook to wellbeing -- teaching us how to be wiser, stronger, more generous to others, more self-disciplined, and more capable of dealing with difficulty and rejection. Seligman asks, what is it that enables you to cultivate your talents, to build deep, lasting relationships with others, to feel pleasure, and to contribute meaningfully to the world? In a word, what is it that allows you to flourish?

There are few issues as consequential in the lives of Americans as healthcare—and few issues more politically vexing. Every single American will interact with the healthcare system at some point in their lives, and most people will find that interaction less than satisfactory. And yet for every dollar spent in our economy, 18 cents go to healthcare. What are we paying for, exactly?

Healthcare policy is notoriously complex, but what Americans want is simple: good healthcare that's easy to use and doesn't break the bank.

Medicare for All is the leading proposal to achieve universal health coverage in America. But what is it exactly? How would it work? More importantly, is it practical or practicable?

“Medicare for All: A Citizen's Guide” goes beyond partisan talking points to offer a serious examination of how Medicare for All would transform the way we give, receive, and pay for healthcare in America.

Dr. Abdul El-Sayed is a physician, epidemiologist, educator, author, speaker, and podcast host. His newsletter, “The Incision”, cuts to the heart of the trends shaping our moment. He is a commentator at CNN. In addition to “Medicare for All” he has written “Healing Politics”, calling for a politics of empathy to cure our epidemic of insecurity. He is the host of “America Dissected,” a podcast by Crooked Media, which goes beyond the headlines to explore what really matters for our health. He is a Senior Fellow at the FXB Center for Health & Human Rights at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, and a Scholar-in-Residence at Wayne State University and American University, teaching at the intersection of public health, public policy, and politics. Have you ever received a medical diagnosis that redefined your life? Perhaps you were staring intently at scans or maybe only listening to the sound of your doctor’s voice, but in that split second, your reality changed.

Some of us became patients and others, caregivers, as the diagnosis took its place in our lives. We carry these stories in our hearts. This workshop, led by Instructor Diane Nash, provides an opportunity to construct a narrative from a collection of memories. It is not a support group. It is a writing workshop designed to help you reflect on and write about your experience. Through extemporaneous writings you will craft the story of the time illness entered your life.

Instructor Anne Lawrence’s slide presentation will show why she (and so many others) love their clotheslines, will explain the lure of the line, and the lore that grew up around it.

There will be washday history, along with sociological issues, the role of feminism, industrialization, culture, and ecology involved. You may consider the clothesline in ways never before appreciated! The sharing of stories and memories will be encouraged. Let's hang out together -- Anne won't leave you hanging.

Anne has been a Clothesline Historian and Hobbyist for the past 40 years, collecting anything she can find that relates to laundry blowing in the wind on clotheslines, and since retiring, sharing her passion with those who remember.

Although romance novels have long been derided as “bodice-rippers” and “chick lit,” the genre is having a big cultural moment right now, thanks in part to the smash success of Netflix’s “Bridgerton”, adapted from Julia Quinn’s book series. What’s more, some critics have even begun to argue that romance novels are an actually important feminist genre.

How did we reach this point? How did romance novels develop into the genre we recognize today? At each meeting, we’ll discuss a notable romance novel and explore its contribution to the genre as a whole. No prior experience with the subject is necessary.

Molly Keran is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Michigan, where she studies genre and popular literature.

Meet the artist and the makers from the film: “PLASTIC MAN: the artful life of Jerry Ross Barrish”. A fifth generation San Franciscan, Barrish was the product of an environment with little appreciation for the arts. His parents were boxing enthusiasts vaguely connected to the mob. It was this situation that got him started in the bail bonds business. Then he broke the mold, stepping-up to become the bailout guy for 1960’s protestors. Inspired by the times, he changed course in mid-life launching himself as a sculptor and filmmaker. Participants will be given a link to the film a week ahead of the class to view. Film director, William Farley and producer Janis Plotkin will join Barrish in his art studio for a post-screening conversation. Janis Plotkin leads this course on Tuesday October 19 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. We all are transfixed whenever we hear beautiful music emanating from either of the University’s two carillons on campus. And the simple sight of the towers housing the Baird and Lurie Carillons leave us awestruck. Have you ever wondered how our University was fortunate enough to acquire two carillons? Have you wondered how they were played? How were the bells made? Or who was the person (carillonneur) creating the music, and how do they make the huge bells ring out? How and when were the Baird and Lurie Carillons built on the UofM campus, and who were some of their notable carillonneurs? How do you play a carillon? I’ll bet you can’t guess!
We’ll learn about the origins of carillons in the 16th century to the future of carillon composing and performance in modern times.

Eva Albalghiti is a carillonneur at the University of Michigan. Eva began playing the carillon at Yale University, and was a member of the Yale Guild of Carillonneurs. She was also recognized for her talent through membership in the Guild of Carillonneurs of North America. After pursuing a two-year research opportunity in Beijing, China, she began her PhD in Environmental Engineering at the U of M. Eva plays a weekly carillon recital at Lurie Tower on UM’s North Campus. I’ll bet the view from the top is spectacular!

The first play to appear in Shakespeare's Folio, but thought to be one of his final plays written. "The Tempest" has become a touchstone in Shakespeare Studies for discussions about genre, authorship, feminism, and postcolonial theory. Yet, not long after its first performances, Shakespeare's play vanished from the stage, appearing only in adapted forms for the next 170 years.

Each meeting, we'll discuss an iteration of "The Tempest," beginning with Shakespeare's play up through Margaret Atwood's 2016 novel "Hag-Seed" in order to consider how approaches to the play have shifted over time.

This course will provide a deep dive into William Shakespeare’s King Lear. Structurally, we will split a reading of the play over the five weeks we meet: each week we will begin by reading one act of the play and then spend the rest of our session in discussion (no outside reading is therefore required).

Active participation will be encouraged, but if you are more of a listener, then you can still join in on the discussion at the end without taking on an “acting” role. As we will discuss, there are significant textual variations in editions of the play; please purchase the Norton Critical Edition (edited by Grace Ioppolo, 2008).

Our study group instructor, Margo Kolenda-Mason, is a PhD Candidate in the English Language and Literature Department at UM, where she studies medieval and renaissance literature.

This study group will meet on Fridays for five weeks beginning on October 22. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed prior to the first session.

Join us for a lively discussion of the book “Cassandra Speaks: When Women Tell the Stories, the Human Story Changes”, by Elizabeth Lesser. Part One explores the myths and stories that are in the DNA of our culture. Part Two looks at women and power and redefines what it means to be courageous, daring, and strong. And Part Three offers “A Toolbox for Inner Strength.”
Written in a fun and delightful way, Lesser points out many truths about how out of balance the United States is, and also believes in humanity's potential to rise to the challenges of our times. Women must be a big part of this. Instructors Bernadette Beach and Sigrid Herman will lead this Study Group.
This study group will meet on Mondays for six weeks beginning on October 25. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed prior to the first session.

We will read and discuss “Think Again” by Adam Grant. He examines ways we could and should question our opinions and attempt to open other people's minds. Many of us favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt. We see disagreement as a threat to our egos, rather than an opportunity to learn.

As the book says, “our beliefs get brittle before our bones.”

You will learn how an international debate champion wins arguments and how the author has coaxed Yankee fans to root for the Red Sox. Adam Grant shows how to get people to begin questioning their ideas, but he freely admits it is often impossible to change minds.

Instructor Gerry Lapidus has conducted OLLI book discussions since 2005. The classes are informal and conversational. He leads the first week's discussion and requests volunteers to lead the remaining sessions while he serves as moderator. Please read the Prologue and Section 1 (p.1-32) for the first session.

This study group will meet on Mondays for six weeks beginning on November 1. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed prior to the first session.

Whither Capitalism? (November 4, 2021 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/88248 88248-21651843@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 4, 2021 10:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

This event is part of the Thursday Morning Lecture Series on Our Changing Economic Landscape.

What is capitalism? What forms does it take in the world today? What forms did it take in the past? What forms will it take in the future? As economic systems go, has it performed well or poorly?

In this lecture, Professor Jim Adams will discuss the meaning of capitalism, the criteria we might use to evaluate capitalism, and the varieties of capitalism that have existed over time and across the globe. One lesson to emerge from this exercise will be a recognition that governments and markets are not opposites: The varieties of capitalism consist of diverse ways of combining government and market mechanisms to achieve socially desirable outcomes. Important measures of "outcome" include not only GDP per capita but also the distribution of health, happiness, income, and wealth.

Born in New York City and raised in East Lansing, Michigan, Professor Adams received three degrees in economics (AB summa cum laude, AM, and PhD) from Harvard University. In 1973, he joined the faculty of the University of Michigan, where his current title is Shorey Peterson Professor of Industrial Organization, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, and Professor of Economics. Adams has held numerous administrative positions, including chair of his department, associate dean of his college, director of the Program in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, and director of the Center for West European Studies. He has held visiting professorships at six European universities, including the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne and the University of Paris Dauphine.

He has advised the Federal Trade Commission, the U.S. Ambassador to France, and several foreign policy departments of the U.S. government. The father of two grown sons, he is married to a professor emerita of pediatric rheumatology.

Pre-registration for this event is required. A link to access the lecture will be provided shortly before the date of the event.

Peter Ho Davies novel “The Fortunes” has been aptly described as “sly, funny, intelligent, and artfully structured.” “The Fortunes” expands the notion of a multigenerational novel by moving beyond the saga of a single family to the story of Chinese Americans beginning in the 1860’s - - - Ah Ling, a laundryman and railway worker in the1860’s; Anna May Wong a film star in 1920’s and 30’s; Vincent Chin, a young man beaten to death by two auto workers in Detroit in 1982; and finally, a Chinese American and his wife who travel to China to adopt a baby girl.

Joyce Carol Oates describes it as “A prophetic work, with passages of surpassing beauty…”

The Times Literary Supplement said The Fortunes “Should take its place as a seminal, defining text on the Chinese-American experience.”

“The Fortunes” was a New York Times Notable Book, won the Anisfield-Wolf Award and the Chautauqua Prize, and was a finalist for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize.

Peter Ho Davies is a contemporary writer of Welsh and Chinese descent. He was born and raised in Coventry, England. He studied physics at Manchester University and then English at Cambridge University. In 1992, he moved to the United States to study in the graduate creative writing program at Boston University.

He has taught at the University of Oregon and at Emory University and is currently the Charles Baxter Collegiate Professor of English Language and Literature in the Helen Zell MFA Program in Creative Writing at the University of Michigan. Peter Ho Davies is the author of the novels “A Lie Someone Told You About Yourself” (2021), “The Fortunes” (2016) and “The Welsh Girl” (2007), as well as the story collections “The Ugliest House in the World” (1997) and “Equal Love” (2000).

He has won numerous prizes for his short stories as well as his novels. Professor Davies lives in Ann Arbor with his wife and son.

Over an hour or so, we'll do 4 or 5 exercises such as the Sherwin Williams Color Preference, the short-form Enneagram and even an old Meyers-Briggs initial quiz. I’ll come up with a couple of others ... just for fun! We’ll poll the class to see the range of personas indicated. Who knows?

This event is part of the Thursday Morning Lecture Series on Our Changing Economic Landscape.

Artificial Intelligence technologies are expected to have a meaningful impact on the U.S. economy. After a brief introduction of AI from a technology perspective, we will learn about anticipated effects of AI on productivity and economic growth in the U.S.
Further, how should the U.S. be thinking about policy (e.g., regulation) to address AI?

We will also review the potential global effects on economies and societies, including competition among countries, and impacts on the wealth gaps between developed and developing countries.

Our speaker, Robert Seamans (Ph.D., UC Berkeley) is an Associate Professor at New York University’s Stern School of Business and Director of the Center for the Future of Management. Professor Seamans’ research focuses on how firms use technology in their strategic interactions with each other, and also focuses on the economic consequences of AI, robotics and other advanced technologies.

His research has been published in leading academic journals and been cited in numerous outlets including The Atlantic, Forbes, Harvard Business Review, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and others. In 2015, Professor Seamans was appointed as the Senior Economist for technology and innovation on President Obama's Council of Economic Advisers.

For the first half of the 20th century, Cuba was known as an exotic get-a-way for wealthy Americans, mobsters, and Ernest Hemingway. This ended with the American embargo imposed by President Kennedy in 1962, eased a bit with President Obama’s “Cuban thaw” in December, 2015, only to be re-imposed by the Trump administration in 2019.

During the thaw, our presenter spent a month in Cuba studying Spanish, volunteering in an after-school program, and exploring the island on a motorcycle. What did he learn about our “forbidden neighbor”, and how can Americans again sample the spice of Cuba? Find out during this photo presentation and discussion.

John Deikis caught the travel bug working on an ocean-going ship in the 1960’s. He later spent a year wandering to the southern tip of South America, Prudhoe Bay in Alaska, the North Cape of arctic Europe, and the Cape of Good Hope in Africa. Interrupted by an unexpected adulthood, he returned to traveling when he retired from a career as a clinical psychologist 10 years ago. His preferred mode of travel is now by motorcycle.

This event is part of the Thursday Morning Lecture Series on Our Changing Economic Landscape.

What is the relationship between tax policy and the economy; in particular, what policies tend to stimulate economic growth and employment? We will learn about U.S. trends in both income and corporate tax policies in recent years, reasons for these trends, and how they have contributed to our increasing wealth inequality.

We will further explore a design for a more equitable income and corporate tax system for the US that could substantially reduce wealth inequality.

Our speaker, Professor Reuven S. Avi-Yonah specializes in corporate and international taxation. He has served as a consultant to the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) on tax competition, and is a member of the steering group for OECD's International Network for Tax Research.

He also is a member of the American Law Institute, a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and the American College of Tax Counsel, and an international research fellow at Oxford University's Centre for Business Taxation. In addition to prior teaching appointments at Harvard University (law) and Boston College (history), he practiced law with Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy in New York; with Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz in New York; and with Ropes & Gray in Boston.

He has published more than 250 books and articles, including Advanced Introduction to International Tax Law (Elgar, 2019), Global Perspectives on Income Taxation Law (Oxford University Press, 2011), and International Tax as International Law (Cambridge University Press, 2007).

For this class instructor, Mary Engelhardt, will facilitate a discussion of John Steinbeck’s novel and John Ford’s 1940 film adaptation, with ample time to process both what we read and what we see. Considered to be Steinbeck’s masterpiece, The “Grapes of Wrath” is a story of human unity and love, confirming the need for cooperation rather than individualism during hard times.

Please secure and read the entire 455-page novel. First published in 1939, the novel takes place during America’s Great Depression, which lasted from the Stock Market Crash of October 1929 until the beginning of World War II. During this time, a long period of drought and high winds impacted large parts of the American Midwest, creating what was called the Dust Bowl. Many people in the lower Midwest moved elsewhere, hoping to find fertile land on which to make a living.

The novel was #12 on the list of the 100 most-loved books in PBS’s The Great American Read.

Under Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro both countries formed a formidable alliance that was economic, political, and military. It particularly involved Cuba sending around 35,000 doctors to work in Venezuela in exchange for Venezuela sending around 90,000 barrels of oil a day. Both countries are now in a deep-seated state of crisis. This lecture explores the sources of the crises in both countries and their ongoing alliance. Silvia Pedraza leads this course on Wednesday December 1 from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. We will consider how migration is transforming societies around the globe. Are receiving countries better or worse off when they welcome new immigrants? How can migrant-receiving societies do a better job welcoming immigrants? How do sending countries fare when their citizens leave? How can sending countries best harness international migration opportunities for development back home? Overall, is a world with international migration better off than a world without it?

Our speaker, Dean Yang is Professor of Economics and Public Policy at the University of Michigan. His research agenda spans international migration, microfinance, health, disasters, and political economy. His fieldwork locations include El Salvador, Guatemala, Indonesia, Malawi, Mozambique, and the Philippines, as well as migrant populations worldwide.

He teaches courses in development economics at the Ph.D., master, and undergraduate levels. A native of the Philippines, he received his undergraduate and Ph.D. degrees in economics from Harvard University.

Two film adaptations of Patricia Highsmith are planned: “Strangers on a Train”, and “Purple Noon” (Plein soleil) (in French with English subtitles). A 3rd film will be announced. Scheduled films are subject to change, as streaming service availability may change. Each film will have two online meeting sessions: a presentation meeting on a Friday, and a discussion meeting the following Tuesday. Watch the film at home in between the two meetings. • Access to a streaming service subscription (such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, MHz, and BritBox) is required. Some films may be available to rent.

Instructor George Ferrell has led several detective mystery film study groups.

This study group will meet twice monthly on Tuesdays and Fridays (see above) for six weeks beginning on October 8. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed prior to the first session.

America's art tells America's story - the optimism, struggles, humor and pain. We'll explore how people from early inhabitants to today pictured the history and landscape of the country reflecting its ideas and ideals.

Images will range from realistic paintings of John Singleton Copley to modern abstractions by Jackson Pollock, from the innocent America captured by Norman Rockwell in his early work to the struggles of black Americans seen in his late paintings and those of black artists like Jacob Lawrence, and from inspiring views of unspoiled country by Thomas Cole to the lonely cities of Edward Hopper. These artists, and others whose work we'll see, help build our picture of America.

Wendy Evans was raised among the museums of London, England. She has advanced degrees from Oxford University in England and Wayne State University in Detroit, taught Art History at Wayne State University and CCS, and is a long-time volunteer at the Detroit Institute of Arts. She gives Zoom presentations on a wide variety of art subjects. More information about Wendy is on her website www.art-talks.org

This event is part of the Thursday Morning Lecture Series on Our Changing Economic Landscape.

Cryptocurrency is often in the news lately, yet its effects on the U.S. economy are complicated. After a brief introduction of cryptocurrency from a technology perspective, we will explore its role as an investment and/or a currency, and its potential effects on productivity and economic growth in the U.S. and globally.

Further, we will understand why it has been used to pay ransom related to cyber-hacking, and its environmental impacts due to its use of high levels of processing power. How should financial regulation policy address cryptocurrency in the U.S. going forward?

Our speaker, Robert (Bob) Dittmar is a Professor of Finance at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, the Faculty co-Director of the Ross Fintech Initiative, and the Faculty Director of the Tozzi Finance Center.

His research focuses on empirical determinants of financial security prices, including equities, fixed income securities, and derivatives. His work has been published in the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, and Journal of Econometrics.

Professor Dittmar received his Ph.D. in Finance from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2000, and previously taught at the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University. He has taught courses at Ross in Fintech, Asset Management, Fixed Income Securities, and Options and Derivatives at the BBA, MBA, and Ph.D. level.

This event is the last of the Thursday Morning Lecture Series on Our Changing Economic Landscape.

How did the American health care system develop its fragmented, irrational form? The answer is found in an unlikely place—the construction of the modern insurance system through collective bargaining in industry in the postwar years. The organized economic power of industrial workers had a transformative effect on the health care market and reshaped health care policy, as workers’ efforts to preserve their own health and well-being interacted with emerging deindustrialization and rising social inequality.

Our speaker, Gabriel Winant, is a historian at the University of Chicago. His first book, The Next Shift: The Fall of Industry and the Rise of Health Care in Rust Belt America, was published this year by Harvard University Press.

The first in a sequence of three introductory art history courses, this study group will focus on works of art that demonstrate the ways in which artists documented their world.

Beginning in the pre-historic era artists painted cave paintings and carved images on stone and bison horn. In the subsequent Neolithic time period, technology and art joined to support the burgeoning agricultural society in the ancient Near East. The Sumerians, Akkadians, and Assyrians depicted their gods and religious rituals of their cultures, as well as the wars and empires that rose and fell. Contemporary with the Ancient Near Eastern civilizations were the Egyptians. We will focus on early Egyptian art and one of their pyramids as well as later sculptures of the human form, which became canonized and perfected in all media.

Instructor Molly Lindner brings eleven years of teaching art history at Kent State University to this subject. The diverse knowledge of the participants will lend to a lively discussion of these fabulous works of art.

This class meets on Tuesdays, from January 18 – February 22. No classes on holidays.

In the food service world, a well trained staff, tried and true recipes and inventory management are essential and non-negotiable. In the Food Gatherers Community Kitchen, our speaker, Scott Roubeck and his small team put out high quality, fresh, nutritious meals 364 days of the year without recipes, all prepared by volunteers and using rescued food that is delivered just two hours before the volunteers arrive to prepare each meal.

Scott will talk about what it takes to feed our neighbors in need, how it gets accomplished and all of the many initiatives that go into making the Community Kitchen shine.

Scott Roubeck is the Food Gatherers Community Kitchen Manager. Scott began volunteering at Food Gatherers in December of 2006 and joined the staff in January of 2008. Scott oversees the day-to-day operations of the Community Kitchen and also runs the Food Conversion Program and the Community Kitchen Job Training Program. Scott has been in the food and hospitality industry for 43 years.

Misidentifications in the Pohrt Collection of Native American Photography (January 20, 2022 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/90213 90213-21668724@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 20, 2022 1:00pm

The Richard Pohrt Jr. Collection of Native American Photography contains approximately 1,470 photographs related to Native Americans and Native American history taken mainly between 1860 and 1920 by more than 150 photographers. The majority of photographs are individual and group portraits of people from tribes west of the Mississippi, with the Apache, Cheyenne, Crow, and Lakota/Dakota being particularly well represented.

The collection contains both studio and outdoor photographs and reflects the dramatic upheavals in Native American life that occurred as a result of the expansion of the United States of America. Our speaker, Jakob Dopp, will discuss some of the challenges encountered while cataloging this collection (such as discovering misidentifications and other errors in certain photographs) as well as additional aspects of the project, including collaboration with Native American Tribal authorities and other consultants about how to appropriately deal with culturally sensitive materials and cultural dissemination.

With small picturesque ports, lively tavernas, and blue-domed churches clustered alongside white sandy beaches, the Cyclades are many people’s idyllic vision of Greece. In “Art and Religion in the Cyclades,” we will join Dr. Chris Adamson, a classical archaeologist and educator, as he explores the islands long and rich history through the religious art produced there over the last five millennia.

The lecture will examine the iconic minimalist figures of prehistoric “Cycladic Culture,” known to have influenced modern artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henry Moore; we will look more closely at some familiar (and less familiar) masterpieces of Classical Greece produced in the islands, including Venus de Milo; and we will navigate the development of Greek Christian art in the islands through to the modern period.

“The Ground Breaking: An American City and Its Search for Justice” by Dr. Scott Ellsworth (January 28, 2022 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/90088 90088-21667721@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, January 28, 2022 10:00am

The story of the Tulsa Massacre (1821) has become a symbol of what has been erased in the telling of American history. Scott Ellsworth, a native of Tulsa, stumbled upon an article about the “race riot” as a 12-year old when a librarian was demonstrating a new technology—microfilm. He turned to that subject for his undergraduate history thesis at Reed College in Oregon and then the book “Death in a Promised Land” (1992). His book was considered the first-ever comprehensive history of the horrific 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre.

With “The Ground Breaking: An American City and Its Search for Justice”, Professor Ellsworth returns to the subject of Tulsa. Described as “riveting and essential,” The Ground Breaking not only recounts the long-suppressed story of the notorious Tulsa race massacre, it also unearths the lost history of how the massacre was covered up and the courageous individuals who fought to keep the story alive. Most importantly, it recounts the ongoing archaeological search for the unmarked graves of the victims of the massacre and of the fight to win restitution for the survivors and their families.

Both a forgotten chronicle from the nation’s past and a story ripped from today’s headlines, The Ground Breaking is a page-turning reflection on how we, as Americans, must wrestle with the parts of our history that have been buried for far too long. The New York Times described The Ground Breaking as “A skillful narrative of excavating the truth about the Tulsa race massacre. . .Candid and self-aware. . . Part of what makes this book so riveting is Ellsworth’s skillful narration, his impeccable sense for when to reveal a piece of information and when to hold something back.” The book was long-listed for the National Book Award, the Carnegie Medal from the American Library Association and recently was named as one of the Best Books of 2021 by Publishers Weekly.

Dr. Scott Ellsworth is a faculty member in the University of Michigan’s Department of Afro-American and African Studies. He teaches courses on African American history, Southern literature, race and sports, and crime and justice in contemporary U.S. society. Trained as a historian, he received his BA from Reed College and his MA and PhD from Duke University.

Formerly a historian with the Smithsonian Institution, he has written about American history for the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times, and has appeared on National Public Radio, the TODAY Show, PBS’s The American Experience, the History Channel, the BBC, and in both film and broadcast documentaries. His book, “The Secret Game”, won a 2016 PEN Book Award, and was named by the Chicago Tribune as one of the Top Ten Books of the Year.

When it comes to backing up the data on our computers, phones, and tablets, many of us have thought, "Is that something I should be doing?" While the answer is definitely YES, setting it up can be confusing and feel daunting.
Hard drives vs. "The Cloud." Apple Time Machine, Windows File History, Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive, Apple iCloud (where is that cloud located anyway?). In this study group, Jim Keen will explore the reasons for and common methods of backing up your data, so you'll be able to decide what is best for your own situation.

No outside reading is required: we will split a reading of the play over the five weeks we meet: each week we will begin by reading one act of the play and then spend the rest of the session in discussion.
Active participation will be encouraged, but if you are more of a listener, you can still join in the discussion without taking on an "acting" role. Any edition of the text is fine.

Bar bets, Scrabble fights, or the Dictionary Game: The dictionary has long been the answer, but the so-called “answer-for-everything” book has a long and surprising history we can explore through interactive exercises and discussion. The dictionary has also been a source of conflict over racial slurs, proper usage, spelling and related matters. Various dictionaries disagree on all these issues. To understand why, we will visit with dictionary creators Samuel Johnson and Daniel Webster, review the development of the ultimate dictionary (the OED), and see what happens when the dictionary goes online in contemporary times.

Before she passed away in 1974, Felicia B. Lubliner wrote about her interment in Polish ghettos and two Nazi concentration camps, Auschwitz and GrossRosen. Her powerful stories have recently been published by her son, Irv Lubliner, emeritus Southern Oregon University professor and OLLI instructor.

He will share excerpts from the book, shedding light on his mother’s experiences and indomitable spirit as well as his experiences as a child of Holocaust survivors and his process of bringing his book to fruition. This is followed by a Q and A session.

Irv Lubliner has presented this program to numerous OLLIs across the country

This study group is suitable for those who typically do not read short stories - but may be ardent readers of novels, mysteries and creative non-fiction - and are eager to be pulled into the somewhat dubious and mysterious world of the New Yorker Short Fiction.
The vaunted New Yorker has, for nearly a century, published some of the most iconic short fiction of all time, and nourished the masters (and queens) of the form. Each week we will read and discuss one short story. Contextually relevant special topics on literary fiction will also be presented. All reading materials will be distributed in advance.
The Study Group will be instructor-led by Deb Mukherjee, but with enough room for discussions. This study group will meet Tuesdays beginning March 1.
Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

The modern corporation as a legal and economic entity finds its origins, in American history, in the generation following the American Revolution. Its advocates understood the corporation as an expression of the revolution’s radically republican ideology, embodying its principles of consent, natural property rights, and community welfare.

A counter narrative, viewing the corporation as an anti-republican concentration of oligarchic power, developed as corporations’ economic roles became manifest. This seminar will look at a region in northern Virginia from which a wave of corporations were launched, c. 1790- 1820.

Instructor Jason Barrett is Professor of History and Humanities Department Chair at Lawrence Technological University. This seminar derives from his ongoing research into the political economy of the founding era. Reading and visual materials will be distributed in the seminar.

We consider new buildings and developments that are revolutionizing Detroit and its neighborhoods, from Bedrock’s ultra-contemporary City Modern residential complex north of Comerica Park to a rash of new projects in Corktown in anticipation of Ford’s arrival at the train station, to The Belt, an uber-hip, revitalized alleyway crowded with art, restaurants, and bars – a nice example of innovative urbanism.

Our speaker, Michael H. Hodges, longtime Detroit News fine-arts writer, just retired after 30 years with the paper. He is the author of two books – “Building the Modern World: Albert Kahn in Detroit” and “Michigan’s Historic Railroad Stations”, both from Wayne State University Press. His work has also appeared in Salon, the New York Times, Village Voice, Spy, and The Nation. Hodges grew up on a dairy farm in Rochester Hills and lives in Ann Arbor.

Since 2007, the Great Michigan Read, Michigan Humanities’ signature program, has bridged communities across the state with Michigan based fiction and non-fiction titles that spark conversation and understanding of diverse perspectives.

“The Women of the Copper Country” by Maria Doria Russell is a fictionalized history of the 1913 copper miners’ strike in Calumet in the Upper Peninsula. Following the story of 25 year old strike leader, Anna “Big Annie” Klobuchar Clemenc, Russell draws attention to the women and the immigrants who risked their lives to fight unregulated capitalist exploitation. Widely praised for meticulous research, fine prose, and the compelling narrative drive of her stories, Mary Doria Russell is the award-winning author of seven bestselling novels, including the science fiction classics “The Sparrow and Children of God”; the World War II thriller, “A Thread of Grace”; and a political romance set in 1921 Cairo called “Dreamers of the Day”.

Mary Doria Russell was born in the Chicago suburbs to a military family. She received her BA in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Illinois- Urbana-Champaign; her MA in Social Anthropology at Northeastern University, Boston; and her PhD in Biological Anthropology at the University of Michigan. Mary lives in Cleveland, Ohio.

The activities surrounding this event will begin with a discussion of Mary Doria Russell’s novel on Friday March 18, 2022 at 10:00am facilitated by the students and faculty of EMU’s Honors College. Following the event will be a panel discussion focusing on the themes raised by the novel - feminism, union organization, immigrant’s rights, and the history of the Peninsula Community in which the novel is set.

Universal Design is a concept dating back to the 1960’s, primarily in the field of architecture. The major concept concerns the design implementation and usage of spaces in which individuals live their day-to-day life.

While addressing major issues affecting persons with handicaps or disabilities, the purpose of Universal Design is to allow all people from infancy to old age and with a range of special abilities to conduct their lives in as normal of a way as possible. In our presentation we shall include approaches involving physical spaces as well as learning environments, hence the title “From Restrooms to Classrooms: Universal Design”. Topics may range from implementing spaces such as restrooms to learning environments including classrooms and workplaces.

Accompanying our speaker, Professor Hagen, will be two undergraduate research assistants, Makiah Tripp & Linda Fan.

This class meets on Thursdays, from April 14 – April 21. No classes on holidays.

Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

Much of the racial turmoil in our country today can be traced directly to elements of our history, even before the founding of the United States. Understanding this history gives us a foundation for action to address the profound inequities that exist in our society today. Topics include the early years, slavery by another name, public policy and the civil rights movement, mass incarceration and the war on drugs, and voter suppression then and now, where do we go from here.

Instructor Suzanne Linderman will lead this study group.

This class meets on Wednesdays, from April 20 – May 25. No classes on holidays.

Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

This is an initial collaboration between the Archaeological Legacy Institute and OLLI Out of Town. Modern Native Storytelling through Performance Poetry explores the fascinating world of a dynamic team of indigenous youth writers from the Santa Fe Indian School (SFIS) in New Mexico. Led by teacher and poet Timothy P. McLaughlin, the SFIS Spoken Word Program empowers its student members to create and perform original poems centered in Native philosophies.

Over an eight-year history, the exquisite artistry of this ever-evolving team has been highly recognized through numerous awards, a bevy of media appearances including in The New York Times and on The PBS News Hour, and performance tours throughout the United States and to the Baltic nations in Eastern Europe. This documentary film journeys with the SFIS Spoken Word Team as the core group (including several graduating twelfth graders) prepares and presents a theater production of their finest poems woven with traditional and contemporary song and dance. The young SFIS poets will enchant your heart and enliven your spirit as they continue the ancient tradition of Native storytelling through the powerful new medium of performance poetry.

Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the presentation will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.
