Cybersecurity: Threats, policy, and responses (September 30, 2020 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/76130 76130-19663684@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, September 30, 2020 4:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy

Over the last decade cybersecurity issues have risen in prominence in both the public and private spheres—there have been near daily reports regarding cyber operations launched by nation states, hacking groups and criminal organizations. Cybersecurity was a key issue in the 2016 Presidential election, and as we head toward the 2020 election during the upheaval of the coronavirus pandemic it remains at the forefront. In this conversation, Paul Abbate, Associate Deputy Director of the FBI, and Teresa Carlson, Vice President of Amazon Web Services Worldwide Public Sector, will discuss some of the challenges in addressing current cybersecurity threats, formulating policy, and calibrating responses. Javed Ali, Towsley Policymaker in Residence at the Ford School, will moderate the discussion.

For more information visit http://fordschool.umich.edu/events/2020/cybersecurity-threats-policy-and-responses

From the speakers' bios:

Paul M. Abbate is the associate deputy director of the FBI. In this position, he is responsible for the management of all FBI personnel, budget, administration, and infrastructure. Prior to his appointment in 2018, Abbate was the executive assistant director for the Criminal, Cyber, Response, and Services Branch. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing all FBI criminal and cyber investigations worldwide, international operations, critical incident response, and victim assistance.

Abbate began his FBI career in March 1996 as a special agent assigned to the New York Field Office, where he worked in the Criminal Division and served as a member of the SWAT Team. He has since worked in many positions within the FBI, including deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, serving as a supervisory special agent within the Newark Division’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, and special agent in charge of the Detroit Division, covering the state of Michigan. He also served as assistant section chief in the Counterterrorism Division, providing national-level oversight and guidance of all United States-based international terrorism investigations, among other positions.

Teresa Carlson leads the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Worldwide Public Sector business, which includes state, local, central and regional governments; educational institutions and Ed Techs; non-profits and non-governmental organizations (NGO); and she advises Amazon Public Policy on global policy issues.

Since starting AWS’s public sector business in 2010, Carlson has driven the business’ growth, which today accounts for 2,300 government, 7,000 education, and 22,000 nonprofit customers, and a vast partner ecosystem across all geographies. Carlson has received many honors over the years, including being named as one of Business Insider’s Most Important People in Cloud Computing, Washington Life’s Power 100 list, Washingtonian Tech Titan, and is a recipient of the 2016 Ellis Island Medal of Honor, which recognizes individuals who have made it their mission to share with those less fortunate their wealth of knowledge, indomitable courage, boundless compassion. Prior to joining AWS, Carlson served as Vice President of Microsoft Federal Government, where she led the company’s US Federal Government business. Before moving into technology, Carlson worked in health care, as a practitioner and consultant initially, then as a business manager and area vice president, responsible for national accounts, marketing, and business development.

For so many people, there is a fear of using the devices that we’ve all come to depend on. We often feel helpless about our technology, or we only scratch the surface--sticking to the functions we know. Or worse, we give up. Instructor Jim Keen will host two fun and productive sessions to help you remove that fear and start enjoying your technology. In the first session, “Keeping in Touch with Your Family and Friends Using Video Chat,” we’ll explore the various apps available, demonstrate how to use them, and examine which are best suited for you. In the second session, “Getting the Most Out of Your iPhone and iPad,” we’ll examine how to use some of the more useful functions of smartphones and tablets: camera & photo features, navigation, news & info services, and social media.

Jim earned his A.B. in Communication and M.A. in Educational Studies from the University of Michigan. He has been heavily involved in educational technology and studying the different ways in which people learn. He is the owner of Keen Focus Technology Tutoring.

The study group will be held on Monday's on November 9 and 16. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

The University of Michigan's Center on Finance, Law & Policy and the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco are co-hosting the second “Central Bank of the Future” Conference on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, November 16 – 18, 2020. This event will be virtual, open to the public, and free to attend.

This event will build on the conference hosted last year by continuing to explore how central banks are evolving and their potential to foster greater financial and economic inclusion in the United States and worldwide. This year’s conference will examine how the three functions of a modern central bank could evolve to create a more inclusive financial system. Areas of exploration may include:

• How the functions of the modern central bank could shift to more
actively promote inclusion and address poverty, rather than
responding to exclusion,
• The potential for central banks to operate as new kinds of utilities
or direct service providers,
• The value and challenge of extending the regulatory perimeter to
supervise new products, services, and networks, and
• The role of technology and innovation within central banks to help
support both traditional and expanded functions.

What’s in a number? In the case of the U.S. Social Security number, the now-familiar nine digits hold a fascinating story about modern citizenship, governance and data. Starting in 1936, the SSN was affixed to more and more American lives, spurring new uses of punch cards and filing systems as well as novel dilemmas about personal data. This talk gives a brief history of the SSN and what it reveals about the changing state of “our” information.

Speaker: Sarah Igo, acclaimed author and historian

Join us for a discussion between Lisa D. Cook and Betsey Stevenson on economics, development, diversity, and innovation. Professor Cook's research on innovation and diversity has shown that while both women and underrepresented minorities have earned an increasing share of bachelor’s degrees and advanced degrees in fields most associated with invention, patent activity for these groups has not increased. What does this disparity reveal about our economy and how can we close the gap? What policies might be put in place to help encourage innovation among underrepresented groups?

Alum Connection: Nancy Xiao, President at Mason

There are many misconceptions about the tech industry, one being that you need a specialized education in order to find a meaningful career in tech. Join the LSA Opportunity Hub on Friday, March 12th for a special Alum Connections session with Nancy Xiao (English ‘14). Nancy will unravel myths and misconceptions about the industry, share her journey from LSA to President of hardware and software company Mason, and talk about her experiences working at Duo Security and Facebook. In addition, Nancy will share the myriad of roles that exist in the tech industry and tips on how to set yourself apart during interviews.

About Nancy:
Nancy is currently the President at Mason, a YCombinator graduate with $25M in Series A funding. She was previously at Facebook for 5+ years working in product management and product marketing within the Oculus and Parse teams. She received a dual degree from LSA and Ross studying English with a minor in Chinese and Business. Her experience spans virtual reality, gaming, advertising, mobile technology, and hardware. She loves a good read from Literati paired with a Zingerman's brownie!

STS Speaker. A Conversation on Prototype Nation (March 22, 2021 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/81191 81191-20871997@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 22, 2021 4:00pm

How did China’s mass manufacturing and “copycat” production transform, in the global tech imagination, from something holding the nation back to a key asset? Prototype Nation offers a rich transnational analysis of how the promise of democratized innovation and entrepreneurial life has shaped China’s governance and global image. With historical precision and ethnographic detail, Silvia Lindtner reveals how a growing distrust in Western models of progress and development, including Silicon Valley and the tech industry after the financial crisis of 2007–08, shaped the rise of the global maker movement and the vision of China as a “new frontier” of innovation. Lindtner’s investigations draw on more than a decade of research in experimental work spaces—makerspaces, coworking spaces, innovation hubs, hackathons, and startup weekends—in China, the United States, Africa, Europe, Taiwan, and Singapore, as well as in key sites of technology investment and industrial production—tech incubators, corporate offices, and factories. She examines how the ideals of the maker movement, to intervene in social and economic structures, served the technopolitical project of prototyping a “new” optimistic, assertive, and global China. In doing so, Lindtner demonstrates that entrepreneurial living influences governance, education, policy, investment, and urban redesign in ways that normalize the endurance of sexism, racism, colonialism, and labor exploitation. Prototype Nation shows that by attending to the bodies and sites that nurture entrepreneurial life, technology can be extricated from the seemingly endless cycle of promise and violence.
